ANITA

LESS than a decade ago, former Wangaratta man Barry Woodward seemed to have it all. Married with two young children, and a thriving career as a general manager of a national company, he was also building his dream family home. “It should have been the best time of his life,” said Barry’s sister, Gabby Simmonds, from her Wangaratta home. But unexpectedly and inexplicably, his behavior began to change, and the normally reserved and laidback Barry became obsessive and was behaving out of character. His worried family sought answers, and four years ago this month, received the sobering news he was suffering frontotemporal dementia - a type of Younger Onset Dementia (YOD). “Within three years he deteriorated so rapidly that he is now in permanent care in the dementia ward in an aged care facility, unable to talk,” said Gabby. The 45 year old’s parents Gwenda and Phillip, and siblings Marc, Craig and Gabby, want to see more age-appropriate and family friendly facilities built for those with YOD. And they’ll be rallying for that cause, raising money and awareness of Barry’s condition when they compete, as Team Barry, in The Age Melbourne Run on July 21. continued page |

Good winter immunity

Home grown fruit

A GOOD immune system is not simply an absence of disease but more importantly is a state of lifelong resistance and ability to recover in a timely manner. Approximately 70 per cent of our immune system is located in our gut, indicating that optimal nutritional status and gut function are paramount especially during winter. Tips to stay healthy this winter: ✔ Minimise sugar, white flour and processed snacks. These both suppress the function of the immune system and allow for infections to easily replicate. ✔ Hydration. A dry nose and throat are much more susceptible to infection so keep them lubricated. The extra fluids will also help with the elimination of virus. This means primarily water with the occasional honey / lemon type drink. ✔ Bone stocks. It’s easy to do and will last you for ages. The resulting broth is chock-full of minerals perfect for your winter

soups and stews. Eating easily digestible foods such as soups and stews allows your body to focus on fighting viruses instead of using energy to digest. ✔ Incorporate Ginger, Garlic, Parsley, Turmeric, and Horseradish to boost your antimicrobial, antifungal aspect of your meal. ✔ Vitamin C, Echinacea, and antioxidants are well

known vitamins and herbs that help boost the immune system, reduce the histamine response (responsible for sneezes and inflammatory responses) and aid in fighting infection. Brightly colored Fruits, Vegetables, such as Broccoli, red capsicum, berries, carrots, nuts, seeds, cold water fish and parsley are a small example of these food sources.

ONE of the most rewarding things about gardening is being able to pick fresh fruit straight from the tree and eating it. Nothing is more pleasurable than the sound of an apple crunching as you sink your teeth into it or the juice of a peach running down your face as you bite into it. Besides their luscious edible crops during summer, fruit trees offer year round value in the garden with their glorious spring blossoms and colorful autumn displays. Fruit trees are available in four forms; the traditional standard sized tree growing to around 4m high x 4 m wide. These trees need space to grow and mature, with a ladder often needed for harvesting and pruning. Dwarf fruit trees grow to a smaller size around 2.5m x 2.5m with full size fruit. Miniature fruit trees may only grow to 1.5m x 1.5m but the fruit they produce is full in size and flavor. Apple trees are also available in a columnar form called Ballerina®. They grow 4m high with a spread of only 60cm making them suitable for narrow spaces and pots. Fruit tree varieties include apples,

apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, pears, quinces, Chinese gooseberries, fig, medlar, mulberry, persimmon, pomegranate and prunes. Nut varieties available include almonds, chestnuts and hazelnuts. It is important to do your research and read the labels to know the trees’ growth habits and pollination requirements. Some varieties of fruit trees are self-pollinators so only one plant is required. Others require another tree of a different variety nearby to enable cross pollination and fruit production. Multi-grafted trees are available with two or three different varieties grafted on to the one trunk or try planting two or three different trees in the same hole providing cross pollination and increasing the amount and variety of fruit; ideal where planting space is short. Deciduous fruit and nut trees can be planted now and throughout winter and with the ever increasing varieties available, there is a suitable fruit tree for every garden. In a couple of years you will be enjoying the fruits of your labor. Happy gardening.

Caring for your chooks

LOVING FAMILY: Barry Woodward (top left) on a Christmas outing last year with wife Tania and children Lachie (left) and Isabella.

Gabby describes the decline of her “caring and protective older brother” as “horrific”, while Barry’s wife Tania said her decision to move him to an aged care facility as “the most heartwrenching decision” she’d ever had to make. “We visit often, but it is so emotional seeing him living in a home and with people twice his age,” Tania said. “It’s just not right. “We need to get respite and residential care facilities for young people with dementia desperately.” Gabby said that although the facility where Barry lives now has a corner to amuse his young visitors, including a basketball ring, “the people there are at least 30 years older than him”. “Dementia is terrible, regardless of your age.” Although the path Barry’s YOD will take in the future – and his life expectancy - is uncertain, Gabby said the family hopes to be a catalyst for change for him and other YOD sufferers.

Those wishing to donate to the family’s fundraising efforts can visit the website at http:// runmelbourne.everydayhero.com.au/Team_ Barry.

Younger Onset Dementia (YOD) referring to dementia diagnoses prior to age 65, has become increasingly prevalent, with approximately 15,000 people across Australia diagnosed with the condition, according to YOD charity The Lovell Foundation. The foundation works to raise awareness of the condition as well as building age appropriate and family friendly facilities for those living with YOD. More information is available on The Lovell Foundation’s website on www.lovellfoundation.com.au.

CHOOKS in the backyard make great pets and they are very useful at providing fresh eggs, here are some tips to keep them healthy. Chooks will just about eat anything, but it is important to feed a balanced pellets or grain mix as the main part of their diet. In addition to this all those food scraps you would normally throw away can be fed to the chickens, just remember that coffee, avocado and chocolate can be toxic so avoid these. During the day it is fine to let chickens scratch around in the back yard but remember wherever you live predators such as foxes, birds of prey and dogs can attack chickens so they need to have a secure shed or pen for their safety. The pen should contain perches, nesting boxes and plenty of clean fresh water. There are many breeds of chickens available, some types are very large and some are small(bantams), there are laying breeds such as Isa Browns and also meat breeds which are heavier birds that are suitable to eat. Although meat breeds do not lay as many eggs as they have a more seasonal laying pattern than the egg laying breeds.

It is important to remember that when you live in town, it is usually fine to have hens but roosters can be very noisy and upset the neighbors when they crow first thing in the morning and sometimes the local council has restrictions on where roosters can be kept and also how many birds you can have in a built up area. Roosters can also be quite aggressive so care should be taken when keeping them. Chickens are quite prone to parasites such as worms, mites, lice and ticks. Your local vet can provide advice on treating these problems but remember if you are consuming the eggs or eating the birds then withholding periods must be observed. Chickens can be prone to lots of other illnesses that can be transmitted by wild birds so if you notice any abnormalities ring your local vet. SNOW PLAY

CATCH OF THE WEEK

CARVE IT UP: Chris Morecroft enjoyed a late afternoon ski on Mt Buller’s Bourke St last week.

Snow in time for holiday fun STEADY snowfall at the alpine resorts has boosted chances for bumper skiing over the school holidays. The resorts are gearing up for an influx of snow goers with school holidays beginning this weekend and plenty of activities planned for visitors. A dumping of 15cm at Mt Buller last week saw the opening of the iconic Bourke Street Carpet run in addition to the Blue Bullet Express. For those who are looking for a unique experience, Buller will again host its Mark

Adams Ski and Golf Day on July 5 to raise funds for local students’ ski programs. Conditions at Falls Creek are perfect for beginners with Mouse Trap lift available for new skiers and boarders. Mt Hotham and Mt Buffalo are also expecting heavier snow fall in the lead up to July. To keep up to date with the latest snow reports and lift statuses, search the web for your favorite mountain or visit your nearest tourist information centre.

The Bardo Story by Salvia Plath OFF-BEAT pop artist Salvia Plath is back with his latest album taking listeners through a journey of mystical, humorous tunes. Following the 2011 release, Dreams, The Bardo Story is ripe with coy mystery offering sunny sing-a-longs beautifully juxtaposed with instrumental vignettes reminiscent of Plath’s earlier, more abstract material.

BOOK

Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns by Lauren Weisberger ANDY Sachs has just turned thirty and is an incredibly successful magazine editor, working closely with her best friend Emily. She’s about to get married - life’s on track and she’s been careful to stay clear of Miranda Priestly, her dreadful first boss. But Andy’s luck is running out. Miranda Priestly’s back ... and more devilish than ever. Published by HarperCollins

Savings plan THEY say “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”. Well, I can’t speak definitively for the mice (although they do seem a bit messy) but I do know that I’m definitely not such a great planner. Oh, I try, really I do, but things just go pearshaped despite my best efforts. Take, for example, this week’s efforts at getting my finances in shape. Having been contributing manifestly to the healthy surplus of one of the Big Banks (via my always-in-the-red credit card and my ‘champagne tastes on beer wage’ attitude to spending), I decided it was time to start putting a bit away for bills. “Capital idea,” I hear you saying. And I agree but, of course, it’s never as easy in the execution. It started out great. Last weekend I set up a couple of new accounts with my ‘online bank’ – specifically designed to cover some regular big bills. I then redirected appropriate amounts of money from my ‘regular’ bank account to be paid on a particular day into the online accounts. When that particular day arrived, I excitedly checked my ‘regular’ bank balance and found that, indeed, the allocated sums of money had exited my account and were presumably speeding across cyberspace into the waiting arms of my ‘online’ banker. I was initially chuffed but, of course, my chuffed-ness was premature. For, while one of the online accounts had received its payment, no such thing happened to the other two – they were both sporting a very unhealthy ‘0’ balance – ouch. Anyway, I checked the bank transfer details and discovered that one of the accounts had the wrong account number (you don’t seem very surprised about that, I note) but that didn’t explain the non-transfer of the other amount. So I rang the bank to ask what might have happened to my missing money.

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK Could it have simply disappeared into the ether? Or might it be accumulating a little interest for my bank out there in cyber-bank-land? Their answer was to check again on Monday as it’s the weekend. Computers, apparently, need a little R and R over the weekend (poor loves) so I guess I’ll just have to wait. Ho hum. But my feeble attempts at saving money this week didn’t stop there. I needed to buy a gift for a friend who’s just had a baby and decided I would frugally get ‘crafty’ and make some Duckie Finger Puppets. Inspired, I whizzed down to the local craft store and grabbed all the items I needed. The whole lot cost me about $16. I was pleased with my thriftiness, especially when I realised I could make a few extra puppets for future gifts with the leftovers. However, just as I finished paying for this little lot, I wondered ‘Are the Duckie Puppets a bit lame? Should I, instead, decorate a photo frame for the new bub?’ So I scoured the shop, found a nice frame and some colorful cardboard lettering and bought a card and some wrapping paper to complete the gift. I also bought a new pair of scissors because my old ones are a bit blunt (no, before you say it, I didn’t think of sharpening them – well, not at the time). This extra lot cost me about $19. Now, I know I’ve never been much of a mathematician but even I soon realised I’d just spent over $35 on the gift where I would normally only have spent about $15 to $20 (including card). So clearly it’s not been great fiscal strides for me this week. I can only guess my missing bank account money is somewhere out there in cyber-space – presumably hanging out with that extra twentyfive bucks I just wasted on plastic googly eyes and glue. Roll on pay day.

WINE TALK

IN MY KITCHEN

Souter’s Vineyard

Preserved lemons

2011 Gewurztraminer Around $30

WITH ANITA McPHERSON Its flavors are equally confident; a medley of lychee, guava and floral nectars, balanced with just enough acidity to help give it a clean, fresh finish. This wine is still a cracker on the lazy susan, its exotic perfume and fruitiness brightening up everything from spring rolls, to Szechuan pepper chicken, right through to your banana fritter. But it would also marry well with anything cheesy, which reminds me of The Sound of Music. You can find out more by visiting www.happyvalley75.com.au. Or take a drive out along the Happy Valley Road to Rosewhite, where you just might spot me spinning in delight on the hill.

WITH BRONWYN INGLETON

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

The Siege of Glenrowan, Day One – 1880 THE first step in a strategy designed to bring down their police pursuers was taken by the Kelly Gang. While Ned Kelly and Steve Hart made their way to Glenrowan, Joe Byrne and Dan Kelly quietly staked out Aaron Sherritt’s hut

in the Woolshed Valley, with Byrne shooting Sherritt. At Glenrowan, Ned Kelly and Steve Hart were forcing gangers to dismantle a section of the track on a bend where the railway turned north towards Wangaratta.

PRESERVED lemons last for years without refrigeration and a slice in stuffings or added to chicken when roasting just adds another dimension to the dish. If you have a lemon tree, you may be getting the flush of new lemons on it now. This recipe is a great way to preserve that lemon flavor all year round. Method In a sterilised 1 litre jar, scatter a spoonful of salt. Tip lemons into a wide plastic tub with remaining salt and mix well. Massage fruit vigorously and pack into jar, curve side out, inserting pieces of bay leaf, cloves and splinters of cinnamon stick at intervals.

> 250g course kitchen salt > 10 thick skinned lemons, scrubbed and quartered > 1 bay leaf, torn into pieces > 2 cloves > 1 stick of cinnamon > Extra lemon juice

INGREDIENTS

WHENEVER I think about Gewurztraminer, it reminds me of The Sound of Music. I can’t explain what it is, but there’s something about the delicious word that conjures images of men in lederhosen, snow on the Alps and spinning nuns who can yodel. Maybe it’s just the umlaut, or maybe it’s because it reminds me of those popular German wines of the seventies like Black Tower and Blue Nun, which were a must-have at the local Chinese on a Saturday night. Whatever the reason, “gewurz” is indeed one of my favorite things, so to find one harking from Rosewhite in the snow-capped Alpine valley region must be a sign from heaven. It’s grown by viticulturalist Allan Souter in the ideal Alpine climate, where the vines are hand-pruned and the grapes are hand-picked. Souter’s Gewurztraminer is a richly viscous drop, with a deliciously fragrant nose redolent of sweet citrus blossom, peach and tropical fruits.

Press down hard on fruit to release as much juice as possible. Spoon salt mixture left in tub over fruit. Cover with extra lemon juice if required. With a clean cloth dipped in boiling water, wipe neck of jar free of salt and cap tightly. Let the lemons mature for at least one month in a cool spot (not refrigerator) before using.

Jobs up, unemployment down in regional Victoria

E

mployment in the North East and other parts of regional Victoria has strengthened over the three months to May according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistic (ABS) figures released last week. Victoria Treasurer Michael O’Brien said regional Victoria’s unemployment rate improved from six per cent to 5.2 per cent over the three months to May 2013 making it the lowest across Australia. “The figures compare favorably with the Australian regional average of six per cent and are significantly stronger than the rate of 6.3 per cent when the former Labor Government left office in November 2010, he said. In the three months to May, employment in regional Victoria grew by 1.4 per cent (9900 persons). The increase was driven by a rise in full-time employment of 13,500 (2.9 per cent), partly offset by a decline in part-time employment of 3600 (-1.4 per cent). The rise in industry employment over the May quarter was driven

by solid growth in the education industry, which increased by 12,200 workers (5.4 per cent) and in health care and social assistance, which rose by 9300 workers (2.7 per cent) . “Victoria is the only state where regional unemployment has fallen compared with the same time last year, Mr O’Brien said. All regional areas within Victoria experienced growth in employment, with the exception of Barwon-Western District, which decreased marginally compared with the three months to

February 2013. “The Victorian Coalition Government is focused on creating jobs and boosting productivity in the regions, he said. “These figures, combined with recent statewide results show that the fundamentals of the Victorian economy remain strong. “We have injected more than $300 million for strategic infrastructure projects in regional Victoria, strengthening regional industries; supporting and growing local economies; and providing opportunities through investment.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

MONEY MATTERS

Year end and your super I TRUST you all remember that Friday is the last day that you can make and receive a tax deduction for superannuation for the year ending June 30, 2013. On Monday, July 1, the government package of reforms to superannuation start to kick in. As an employer the Superannuation Guarantee Charge rises to 9.25 per cent and this will continue an upward path until June 2018 when it peaks at 12 per cent. The government is calling the package of reforms ‘Stronger Super’ whereby it aims to transform retirement savings, by maximising returns and efficiency. Several changes could affect you and your business. A simple low cost default superannuation product called ‘My Super’ has been created, improving everyday transacting between employers and super funds – making it easier, cheaper and faster, through ‘SuperStream’ and strengthened the governance, integrity and regulatory settings of the superannuation system, including in relation to self-managed superannuation funds. What is ‘My Super’? Under the legislation, a MySuper product must have common characteristics for comparison across funds, based on a few key differences – cost, investment performance and the level of insurance cover provided. You are probably thinking this will have no effect on my employees – but you better think again, because as of January 1, 2014, your business may be required to make contributions to a MySuper compliant fund. Contributions for any employees who have not made a preferred super fund choice must be made into a compliant MySuper fund. So when selecting your default fund, the greater simplicity and comparability of

MySuper products will make it easier for your business to make this choice. What is SuperStream? This is the name given to the package of measures designed to improve the productivity of the superannuation system and make the system easier to use. So be warned, if you have been a bit tardy with the payment of employee superannuation, big brother will soon have all the detail at its fingertips - as by July 1, 2014, employers with 20 or more employees on the payroll will need to send contributions in the new format, and by July 1, 2015, all employers with less than 20 employees will have to do likewise. SuperStream will introduce a standard electronic process for recording and managing data and making superannuation payments, including rollovers and regular contributions. It will also reduce unnecessary duplication of member accounts across funds by firstly, using members Tax File Numbers to search and identify multiple accounts and secondly, it will move these accounts to the member’s active fund. Benefits will include a standard electronic format, which means you will only need to make one transfer and not to many funds. So, if you have any concerns talk to your accountant or financial advisor, as I know from experience with my community involvement, the present method I use is first class through the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (Department of Human Services, Commonwealth) and the employees have their contributions paid to their funds by the Clearing House. These reforms are certainly warranted as superannuation represents a major portion of the assets of every family and should be protected at any cost. Too often people say their super hasn’t been paid and it is usually too late to recover it.

HELP AT HAND: New online services will be available from the ATO from June 30.

Tax time online

IT is almost time to lodge income tax returns, and the ATO will have new online services available from June 30 to make it easier. “We recognise that more people want to do business with us online including using mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones,” Tax Commissioner Chris Jordan said. “As part of our improved online services, taxpayers who visit the ATO website will be able to access a new personalised homepage that lets people manage their tax and super information online.” Once registered, people can: ✔ update personal details online ✔ check the progress of income tax returns online ✔ arrange to pay a debt online ✔ keep track of your super online This year the ATO will also launch taxtime magazine, a digital magazine providing interactive information to help taxpayers complete their income tax returns. It will be free to download from Apple app and Google play stores and includes video clips, digital instructions and interactive checklists to help people get their tax right.

With newsagencies no longer stocking hardcopy tax return instructions this year, the digital instructions provide an interactive online alternative. For more information on individual tax return instructions visit the ATO website. “The quickest and easiest way for people to lodge their own tax returns is through e-tax, the ATO’s free, fast and secure online lodgment service,” Mr Jordan said. Help with work related expenses With $18 billion in work-related expenses being claimed each year, the ATO will continue to pay close attention to these claims to make sure they are correct. To help get work related expenses correct there are occupation specific guides on the ATO website. Help with small business expenses For small business with a turnover of less than $2 million the depreciation rules for business assets are now simpler. The small business instant asset write-off threshold has increased from $1000 to $6500, allowing small businesses to immediately write-off most new depreciating assets costing less than $6500.
