Embracing AgTech invites consumers to Invest Inya Farm MANSFIELD resident Nathan MacPhee has recently launched the pilot app for his startup, Invest Inya Farm (IIF), with cattle in Mansfield, oysters in Bateman’s Bay and ginger in the Northern Territory all being trialled preceding the nation-wide roll-out. In order to achieve the National Farmers’ Federation’s bold vision for Australian agriculture to become a $100 billion industry by 2030, new forms of investment need to be identified that don’t compromise national interest. AgriFutures estimates that $8.7 billion per annum in new capital will be required to achieve this goal. Nathan is proposing a fresh form of capital that has never been accessed before to contribute in part to this total. “What if anyone could invest in agriculture without owning a farm?” said Nathan. “What if you could earn a strong return while supporting Australian farmers? “What if anyone could have a farm in their pocket and watch their investments grow?” Deemed more Agriculture Finance Technology or Ag FinTech, Nathan said the technology offers something completely new to Australia - the ability for the individuals to invest directly

into farming or agriculture. Through the platform people can invest in a farm’s production and reap a profit when the farmer eventually sells, building a mutually rewarding bond between farmers and consumers. The app enables farmers to list - and anyone to invest in - real on-farm agricultural assets, whether that is a single cow, a row of grapevines or a dozen oysters. “It’s not about investing in the farm itself and compromising landownership,” said Nathan. “We are conscious of not being a burden on farmers. “Nor do we want to disrupt their business model, or interfere with the process. “It’s more about buying a managed risk and investing in the agricultural production cycle. “For farmers it injects new capital into operations, improves cash flow and liquidity and mitigates risk, as upfront costs are fractionalised. “And for investors it is a risk that offers a lucrative return, but as all the farmers on the app are accredited with proven track records - which will be visible to investors - there is that transparency.” ■ Continued pages 2-3

From page 1 The idea for Invest Inya Farm came after Nathan moved to Mansfield from the dizzy heights of corporate Sydney. Having spent over 20 years in financial services at senior management level, his wife’s desire to exchange the daily grind for a simpler lifestyle, had the couple contemplating a tree change. “My wife grew up on a farm, and she had a yearning to move to the country, ideally near a ski resort,” said Nathan. “Now at this stage I was commuting regularly between Sydney and Melbourne, and it just happened that I looked out of the airplane window one day and saw Mount Buller covered in snow. “And then I saw Lake Eildon, and I didn’t know where this area was, but I knew I wanted to find out. “When we landed, I immediately rang my wife, and said that I might have found the new home that we were looking for. “It’s near a ski resort, and there is a massive lake - which were both prerequisites - and it’s only two hours from Melbourne, I said. “We then decided we needed to visit. “And we loved it immediately, and so we moved. “And we’ve been here for over three and a half years. “However, I only really settled into being a local six months before COVID hit. “Up until then I had commuted to Sydney every week from Albury, and I’d had enough. “I took time off to reassess the situation, and work out what direction to take my career in. “Progressively more enchanted by the prospect of farming, I had, however, come to the blunt realisation that I didn’t have sufficient land or resources to move into agriculture in a meaningful way. “I had deliberated on how I could get into agriculture, and unless I inherited a decent

tract of land, or accrued enough wealth to buy a big property, or considered a niche market I would be unable to make it a viable vocation. “However, from this realisation an idea was spawned. “If I can’t buy the land, what if I could buy the cow? “There are lots of people who are interested in agriculture, and who have accessible capital. “Agriculture is essential to our survival, and yet 90 to 95 per cent of the community can’t participate in the process. “What if they could? “The initial premise for the app was quite rudimentary, viewing a cow as an appreciating asset that starts small and grows in value over time and through functional inputs.” It was on attending Beef Week in Rockhampton that Nathan approached Fiona Simpson, the president of the National Farmers’ Federation, with his idea. With the industry looking to generate significant capital through alternative ownership models, reduce risk management barriers and at the same time promote connectivity between producers and consumers, Nathan’s proposal was a timely one and the feedback he received from Fiona encouraged him to further explore his idea. Nathan was initially concentrating on the livestock industry, however Fiona suggested his platform might be particularly relevant to broadacre farming, and other horticultural endeavours. And as a result, black sesame is one such crop that will soon be added to the platform, with a Northern Territory farmer coming on board before the end of the year, potentially making 30 hectares of the crop available through the IIF app. “The farmers are able to allocate up to 50 per cent of their crop through Invest Inya Farm, at parcels of a tenth of a hectare,” said Nathan. “Buy-in is $100 which covers the farmer for things like input costs, leases and harvesting.
NEW HOLLAND GENUINE PARTS.
“Working on the proviso that one hectare produces one tonne of seed and seed is $1800 per tonne, an investment of $100 in one tenth of the crop will generate $180. “The profit is then split with the farmer and the investor, which means that the investor receives $40 on top of the initial investment, effectively giving a 40 per cent return, over a five to eight month period.” The app also serves the bigger purpose of community engagement and education. Nathan is currently in discussions with a Beechworth farmer, who he’s very keen to work with. This farmer grows apple trees for nurseries and orchards, and Nathan has a vision of a classroom of children bringing in their $8 at the beginning of the year and purchasing an apple tree. They learn about all the costs and margins, and then over the next nine months they receive small updates and photo as to how their tree is growing and their investment is progressing, via the app. “At the end of the period, the tree is then sold for say $11 and the students get back their investment plus a profit of $1.50,” said Nathan. “So they learn how and why apple trees grow. “They learn about money, investment and interest. “And all within a real and engaging lesson. “This is not about major investment, this is about real people putting their dollars into agriculture. “It’s nurturing an emotional connection and supercharging it with a financial connection. “And it allows producers to build a brand directly with consumers, so that the best farmers with the best profiles attract the best investors who are willing to pay more. “Producers do not need to sell at market and below rates for investors to buy in. ■ Continued page 3

From page 2 “If the farmer is providing exceptional outcomes for their investors, they can charge premium rates and bring that future cash flow forward.” Nathan uses oyster farmer Ewan McAsh as an example of the benefits of accessing that future cash flow. With the festive season fast approaching, the demand for oysters is set to significantly increase and command higher prices. Ewan placed 4000 dozen oysters with investors at $6.90 per dozen. These small grade Sydney rock oysters will be fattened out over three months to a medium size where Ewan will then get a premium price of $8.20 per dozen. Ewan will sell the product into the hospitality industry. The benefit of having investors is that Ewan is able to hold onto oysters and grow them out and get a premium price, when normally he would have considered selling some of his harvest as smaller grade molluscs to finance the next crop. “And at the same time he has built his brand and created a connection with his market,” said Nathan. “We anticipate investors will want to go to the restaurants that stock ‘their’ oysters. “There will be that sense of ownership. “And with the app it not only provides information about each specific crop and the farm on which it is grown, it gives regular updates on weather events in real time, and publishes news that is relevant to the featured industries. “It’s about generating confidence in the farmer, yet at the same time building a compelling story.” And with each compelling story, more investors are attracted to a crop. “While farmers are bound by fence lines, investors are able to buy into small parcels of different crops with varying cycles,” said Nathan. “They could effectively own wheat in Western Australia, barley in Victoria, sugar cane in Queensland and black rice in Northern Territory. “Investors get to diversify their portfolio across farms and regions, transforming the risk and reducing the chance of a failure. “And if there is a failure, that just shows that the product is working. “Agriculture can be risky, and we’re aiming to mitigate that risk, and at the same time generate engagement and investment. “There’s nowhere in the world where people can invest in the farm production cycle without investing in the farm. “We’re aiming to change that.”

Meyer unable to defend Timbersports title DESPITE the Prime Minister’s announcement that international travel would be resuming as early as November, it was too little too late for Australia to maintain its dominance of the Stihl Timbersports® World Championships. For the first time in the series’ 36 year history, no Australian athlete was able to compete in the pinnacle event of the original extreme sport, with Victoria’s Brayden Meyer unable to defend his title as a World Stihl Timbersports Champion. The competition went ahead with the best athletes from Europe, the USA and Canada at the Motorworld Munich in Germany on Saturday, October 2, which was Sunday, October 3 Australian time, with USA’s Jason Lentz crowned the new World Champion. Stihl Timbersports is an international extreme sports competition series with the roots of the sport dating back to Australia and New Zealand over 100 years ago. Today the world’s best athletes compete in national and international events featuring three axe disciplines and three sawing disciplines. Springboard, Underhand Chop and Standing Block Chop are the classic axe disciplines; Single Buck (single-man cross-

2018 World Champion. Despite receiving a travel exemption to compete, Meyer was unable to defend his title due to restriction of flights meaning there was no guarantee he could return from Munich this year. As a result he was left to watch USA’s Jason Lentz take out the competition via the live stream from his home in Broadford, Victoria. After the championship finished, Brayden was quick to congratulate Lentz, however, he did warn him to not get too complacent, recording a video message for the newly crowned champion. “I was gutted having been unable to travel to Europe this year for the Stihl Timbersports World Championship,” said Brayden Meyer “Congratulations to Jason Lentz on a big win today. “I’m sure we’ll be back next year to reclaim the title, so don’t get too comfortable with it because we’re coming for you.” With the 2021 Individual World Championship now over, Stihl Timbersports® is delighted to confirm that the 2022 World Championship - which will see the return of the Team Event after a two-year absence due to COVID - will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden on October 28-29, 2022.

Life membership for retiring Irrewillipe farmer in supporting young breeders,” Mr MacKenzie said. “The leadership Alan has shown in that way has been enormous. “What happens in an organisation often comes down to a few people, and Alan’s passion for cows and ensuring they are awarded justly through the classification system has always shone through. “His success in recent years must seem like a dream come true with the achievements of their cows.” Mr Carson said the life membership was a “tremendous honour”. “I’ve had a great time classifying cows and enjoyed every bit of it,” he said. Mr Carson is continuing as a classifier at this stage, although he’s uncertain for how long. “I don’t know how much longer I will do it,” he said. “I’ve always been a firm believer that when you’re not milking cows you shouldn’t still be classifying but I’m still going at this stage.” Classifiers evaluate and compare cow body parts for their structure according to breed conformation scorecard and ideals. “I have put a lot of time into it,” Mr Carson said. “I’ve travelled all around Australia for the classifications. “I would have been on every Jersey farm in Australia several times, from Western Australia to Tasmania to the Atherton Tablelands.” He paid tribute to Janine. “I’ve spent many days classifying cows but I’ve had someone at home milking the cows for me; without Janine I couldn’t have done it,” he said. The farm has been sold to a sheep farmer, ending a family
ONE of Australia’s leading dairy cow classifiers has been awarded a Jersey Australia life membership as he retires from the industry. Alan Carson has been a classifier since 1983 and has also served three terms on the Jersey Australia board. Mr Carson and his wife Janine have sold their Irrewillipe dairy farm and award-winning Cairnbrae Jerseys and will move to Torquay at the end of November. The Jersey Australia life membership was presented at the start of their on-farm second stage dispersal sale on October 13. Mr Carson has been a classifier for Jersey Australia for 38 years, including two periods as head classifier between 1999 and 2012, and 2016 to 2021. He has also been a director on the Jersey Australia board since 2015. The award was presented by former Jersey Australia president Chris MacKenzie who was the most recent life membership recipient. Mr MacKenzie said Mr Carson was an astute and respected classifier and a forward-thinking board member. He said the name Cairnbrae Jerseys, established in 1947, resonated around the world. Success in the show ring included an International Dairy Week grand champion cow in 2019, number one BPI cows, and multiple cows classified to 94 points. They have also been prominent breeders of bulls for artificial insemination, with 24 entering the system highlighted by Elton, who sold more than 150,000 straws. “Alan is also a very encouraging person who takes strong interest
dairy farming history dating back to 1897. Alan and Janine took over the farm in 1976. The October 13 dispersal sale averaged $5740 with a top price of $28,000 for Lot 176 Cairnbrae Casino Estelle 4, with a total clearance of 192 lots. The earlier dispersal sale averaged $4560. Mr Carson said he was proud of the cows, which included more high-profile lots in the second sale. “We’ve had lots of good reports from our previous sale and will watch them with great interest at their new homes,” he said. “They don’t happen in five minutes; it has taken us a lifetime to put them together.” Alan and Janine will raise 71 calves before moving to their new beef property at Torquay. There will be a lot of sentiment as they see the cows loaded on trucks. “On Monday morning when they’re all gone it’s really going to hit,” Mr Carson said. He leaves confident that the Jersey cow is the cow of the future due to its efficiency. “The Jersey cow is definitely better today than when we started,” he said. Current Jersey Australia president Lisa Broad said Mr Carson’s commitment in continually improving and evolving the classification system had been second to none. “He’s given it all over his time in classification but that’s just one part of his commitment,” she said. “Alan has also been a valued board member and a major contributor to dairy farming and the Jersey breed.”

THE people have spoken. A grower-funded campaign that aims to get more Australians buying avocados has taken multiple accolades in what may be one of the industry’s most impactful initiatives yet. Funded by Australian avocado grower levies and delivered through Hort Innovation, the ‘Our Green Gold’ campaign aired in television breaks during the Olympics and Paralympics, social media and radio, and on billboards throughout major cities including a mural painting in the iconic Kings Cross, as well as on the busy corner of Bridge and Punt Road in Melbourne’s Richmond. Starring comedian and actor Nazeem Hussain, the campaign has reached over 17.6 million Australian consumers to date with more activity scheduled over the coming months to support the WA Hass crop and the Shepard variety season. So far, the initiative has taken the prestigious Seven Network Best Ad of Tokyo 2021 competition, the Outdoor Media Association (OMA) Creative Collection Award and was an Inside FMCG top marketing pick of the year. Queensland-based avocado grower Daryl Boardman said the campaign reflected what grow-

portant part of our dining culture.” Hort Innovation avocado champion Matt Dwyer said the award-winning campaign was an excellent example of levy funding in action. “From the outset, our avocado grower advisory group helped shape the campaign, and working together with Hort Innovation and partner agencies TBWA Sydney and Atomic 212, we have

seen some great results,” Mr Dwyer said. “Australian avocados have never been more popular with our research showing two in three consumers are more likely to purchase avocados after seeing the campaign.” According to the 2019/20 Horticulture Statistics Handbook, there are currently over 750 avocado growers in Australia producing 87,546 tonnes per year valued at $450 million across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. Peak body Avocados Australia chief executive John Tyas said there has been a significant increase in avocado production and supply in 2021. “This year we’re seeing a massive increase in production with a lot of young plantings coming online,” he said. “We’re expecting about 120,000 tonnes over the next 12 months. “It’s going to be a massive crop around the country.” Currently, Hort Innovation is investing $15.7 million in research, development and marketing projects on behalf of the avocado industry, targeting everything from biosecurity measures to fruit quality initiatives and efforts to maximise yield.

Farmers working together for the YV By EMMA OLIVER FIFTEEN years ago a group of Yarra Valley berry growers were sick and tired of the produce market and the fluctuating prices and
demand for their premium quality product. Coming together, the growers invested their money in starting a business with the 12 producers becoming shareholders in what would
become YV Fresh. Aggregating produce, YV Fresh approached both Coles and Woolworths keen to supply the major supermarkets and their proposal was accepted.

“We also now supply Costco and Aldi, and the business has expanded to 14 shareholders and represents 25 growers overall, who are happy with the service we offer and the way we do business,” said Jeff Matthews, sales manager for YV fresh. “The majority of the original growers have remained with the business, however, the product portfolio has expanded significantly from the first raspberries and blackberries
that graced the shelves of retailers under the YV Fresh branding. “We now supply blueberries and red currants, and strawberries. “And in recent years have approached cherry farmers and chestnut growers to add their produce to our portfolio, which has been a great fit, and has extended our supply window from late October to June. “We have also welcomed a couple of new fruit under the YV Fresh umbrella, with
a couple of growers concentrating on kiwiberries and bayberries for the domestic market.” Kiwiberries are a smaller version of kiwifruit, with a smooth texture and sweet aromatic taste. There is only one grower nationwide who is attempting to grow the crop commercially, and with the challenges of generating consumer awareness of the fruit also comes the difficulty of producing a viable volume. ■ Continued page 11

from page 10 “Unfortunately at this stage we just don’t have a lot of either the kiwiberries or the bayberries,” Jeff said. “It takes three to four years after planting a bayberry before you see any fruit. “So at this stage we are busy propagating more plants for that necessary volume.” When volume is small, Jeff admits that product placement becomes critical to success. “We work in collaboration with the retailer in regards to what fruit we have, the timing and the availability and where the grower is located,” he said. “We have ideas as to where some of the more boutique fruit might do well, and of course we will make the suggestion as to where we think it should be launched and sold. “However, the buyers’ knowledge and understanding of the demographic in each location might mean they have different ideas. “We have nurtured really open and flexible relationships with all our retailers based on co-operation and mutual respect, and along with the retailers have realistic expectations of the market. “We listen to each other.” Jeff has spent 10 years at YV Fresh fostering this relationship, and he relishes the role of middle man negotiating between growers and customers the best possible outcome for all involved.
“I’ve taken on board the mantra that produce is not just a job, it’s a way of life,” he said. “It’s not an easy job because of the volatility of the product, which is exacerbated when you are dealing with perishables like berries. “If all things work like clockwork our product is picked today, and on supermarket shelves tomorrow afternoon. “It requires the ability to pivot quickly and have all those lines of communication open, especially when you contend with multiple changes throughout the day. “A grower may tell me to expect 1000 trays of raspberries the next day for market, and then he arrives with 1500 trays that are ready to go. “I do thrive a little bit on the volatile nature of the job and the satisfaction of managing to pull it altogether logistically, while also selling a product that is incredibly high quality.” Working like a well-oiled machine, growers based in the Yarra Valley and Kinglake pick and pack on farm, transporting the produce to the YV Fresh distribution centre which is conveniently located in Silvan. “We have growers in Tasmania, some up in Mildura, and others in Stanley just outside of Beechworth, who we send the orders directly through to,” Jeff said. “They then action the order and put it straight into distribution, reducing additional freight time and cost from the equation.
“Part of the YV Fresh guarantee is the best quality produce in premium condition. “This requires best farming practices, so YV Fresh is always working in collaboration with its growers to ensure we stay up to date with new developments and improvements in fruit varieties, plant and farm management, growing techniques and food safety. “And as we distribute fruit nationally to the major supermarkets, as well as independent retailers and wholesale market agents, we also have to be completely on top of our cold chain management so that we are delivering the best possible quality fresh fruit.” With the season beginning to kick off, Jeff is one of only four on the wholesale side of the business who will facilitate the smooth transition of YV Fresh from its winter sojourn into fullscale production and peak demand. “We went through last season under staff shortages, however, the effect was relatively small,” Jeff said. “We are fortunate that a large percentage of our growers are in close proximity to Melbourne, so the location has saved us. “Our workforce is relatively constant, which is a tribute to our growers and the way they do business. “They’re a group of dedicated and passionate Australian farmers who specialise in producing some of Australia’s finest produce - and it shows.”

Polaris increases contributions to SxS safety POLARIS has long been a leader in promoting off-road safety through their product innovations, key technology and consumer-focused initiatives. The Polaris line-up includes over 30 SxS vehicles, which offer inherent safety benefits like ROPS (roll-over protection structures), seat belts and safety nets. To further encourage positive safety practices, Polaris announced in June 2020 that they would provide two free helmets with the purchase of every Ranger SxS for the indefinite future. Today, Polaris is proud to further enable safe riding practices through industryleading technology with the launch of the all-new Speed-Control and Geofencing Kit accessory. This kit, which incorporates a new dash system, allows users to set a maximum speed limit and geofenced areas on Ranger 1000 and Ranger Crew 1000 models*, keeping operators and workplaces safer. “At Polaris, we believe we have a duty to promote and enable safe riding practices among our owners,” says Alan Collins, managing director for Polaris Australia and New Zealand. “Starting with youth riders, we offer vehicles with industry-leading safety technology to help them build confidence while giving parents and guardians ultimate control and peace-of-mind. “Now, with the Speed Control and Geofencing Kit, we can provide the same tools and control to farmers and commercial owners looking for ways to improve safety with their operators.” Farmers and commercial operators alike will find the benefits of speed control and geofencing extremely useful as it enables them to take control of the safety of their workers. Whether controlling ride boundaries due to unsafe conditions or high traffic areas, limiting speed due to challenging terrain or ensuring operators are riding at the appropriate speed for their experience level, users can do it all with this new kit. The maximum speed limit can be controlled simply via the dashboard with passcode access or remotely through the Polaris Ride Command app. The Ride Command app is required for users to set geofence parameters. To get started, simply download the app to your smartphone through the App Store or Google Play, create your Polaris account and add your vehicle to your virtual garage. Once the vehicle is added and paired, users can set a maximum speed limit and add geofence parameters to be “pushed” to their vehicle. After programming is complete, the smartphone is not required for the system to function. Polaris is preparing a User Guide to help customers navigate the various features of this kit, which will be available on their website. A geofence is a virtual fence that allows you to specify vehicle speeds for inside and outside a defined area. The inside speed and outside speed can be set individually in any values from 9.7 km/h to 88.9 km/h in approximately 3.2 km/h increments. Users can store up to three geofences in the Ride Command app, but only one geofence can be enabled at a time. GPS accuracy can vary by region, so make certain to give adequate distance for geofence boundaries to accommodate this variation. A geofence will not stop the vehicle, it will only slow to the pre-programmed speed limit, much like cruise control in a car but management determined.
*The Speed-Control and Geofencing Accessory Kit fits 2020 and 2021 Ranger 1000, Ranger 1000 Premium, Ranger 1000 EPS, Ranger Crew 1000, Ranger Crew 1000 Premium and Ranger Crew 1000 EPS. Priced at $529 AUD / $575 NZD, these kits are available for purchase through certified Polaris dealers. They can also be purchased and installed at time of purchase.
TECHNOLOGY: Vehicle owners can set geofence parameters using their smart phone via the Polaris Ride Command App.

Supercharged $14.1m program to support nation’s vegetable growers VEGETABLE growers across Australia are set to benefit from the next generation of a national extension program aimed to boost productivity and deliver the latest research and development on-farm. The new $14.1m VegNET 3.0 program is being delivered through Hort Innovation using vegetable industry levies and funds from the Australian Government, and led by Australia’s peak vegetable industry body AUSVEG. Hort Innovation chief executive Matt Brand said the
initiative represents the single largest research and development investment in the vegetable growing sector’s history, and it’s anchored on best-practice and what the industry has identified as priorities. “This supercharged 5-year extension initiative takes a collaborative, local focus, with development officers based in 10 growing regions across the country,” Mr Brand said. “Each region will receive tailored support that meets local challenges. “This network of expe-
rienced professionals will provide evidence-based tools and information in vital areas such as biosecurity, pest and disease management, soil and water management, the supply chain and protected cropping.” Mr Brand said the VegNET initiative complements Hort Innovation’s dedicated extension arm which was created in 2019. He said it also builds on the foundation and momentum generated through previous VegNET programs. AUSVEG chief executive officer Michael Coote said
that having a nationally-coordinated VegNET program will help ensure that growers all around Australia will have access to a consistent, industry-focused extension program that will put their needs first in their efforts to be productive, profitable and more competitive in an ever-increasing global marketplace. “VegNET is an important program for our industry,” he said. “Australian vegetable growers are world-leaders in the production of high-quality, healthy vegetables and
are constantly looking for new ways to innovate and grow more sustainably and develop their businesses. “AUSVEG is well-placed to work with well-trained regional development officers, who are strongly supported, to deliver a high-performing, consistent and efficient VegNET program that will meet vegetable growers’ needs.” Mr Coote said a strong extension network that connects growers with local, regional and international experts will be an important element to the industry’s fu-
ture success. VegNET regional development officers will be based at Food and Fibre Gippsland as well as at AUSVEG. “While growers are facing significant issues with labour shortages, rising input costs and an increasingly volatile climate, the industry is well-placed to overcome these challenges and take advantage of the research and services on offer in Australia to improve its productivity and increase its value to help the agriculture sector meet its goal of $100 billion by 2030,” he said.
Introducing Fence-Line Solutions’ new Brace-T FENCE-LINE Solutions understands that when you build something, you expect it to last. The Fence-Line Solutions new Brace-T is Australian made and has been designed and engineered to grip your post. Formed from galvanised spring steel, long lasting and fire resistant, the Brace-T has a 4.2 ton breaking strain. The 16 millimetre thread allows for higher torque, due to the larger diameter, than the standard 12mm thread. Having the thread located in the centre of the Brace-T means that no drilling is required, or cutting off the unused thread from your post, saving a lot of time and hassle in installation. The 16 millimetre thread means you can adjust your
end assembly down the track, if required. A quick, clean installation with nothing to trip over coming out of the post. The Brace-T is designed to be used in conjunction with Fence-Line’s StayBlock with StayPlug. Fence-Line’s StayBlock has the largest surface area of fencing blocks on the market. Its underneath surface is flat which means you have 100 per cent full contact with the soil, for a downward force that is unbiased to the front or the back of the StayBlock. The Brace-T has been designed to slot into the StayPlug of the StayBlock to allow a fully balanced load. Not many products are designed to last 50 years, but
you expect your fence to last at least that long. Next time you are a building a fence, think about your fence design. A good fence design allows you to maintain any length of fence in under 30 minutes. With our products all the fence load is relayed to the end assembly and not choked to the uprights down the fence line. Understanding that the true cost of your fence is labor plus materials divided by the years your fence will last. Fence-Line has the products to exceed your fence life expectations. Visit the website at www. fencelinesolutions.com.au to see all their fencing products to make your life easier, or contact their office on (03) 5755 1334 or 1800 443 121.

Australian food prices rise across the board THE price of a number of major foods in Australia has risen during the COVID-19 pandemic influenced by a range of factors, however, it hasn’t phased consumers, according to ANZ’s latest Agri Commodity Report. “Both globally and domestically, the decades long trend to lower food prices appears to be reversing,” director of ANZ’s food, beverage and agribusiness insights, Madeleine Swan, said. “Certain retail grocery prices have jumped strongly in recent months on the back of factors including a shortage of livestock, labour and shipping for imports.” The rise in retail beef prices has outstripped any other food category in Australia, leading some to conclude that beef will soon be considered a luxury item. The impact of the pandemic including the shut down of restaurants and cafes has seen the counter-intuitive result of beef consumption actually rising strongly despite price increases, whereas chicken consumption has fallen despite relatively smaller price increases. The strong price increases of the past few years doesn’t seem to have dampened consumers’ enthusiasm for beef, anecdotally, shoppers are increasingly moving to lower priced cuts such as mince and viewing premium cuts such as steak as a luxury item rather than for everyday consumption. Lamb consumption on the other hand remains relatively stable, with longer term forecasts of slight increases in per capita consumption. With beef prices rising faster than lamb, lamb is also becoming a more attractive alternative for some consumers. Retail prices of cereal and bread products remain surprisingly stable despite strong rises in both global and domestic grain prices. Retail bread and cereal product prices now sit just over two per cent higher than they did over 10 years ago. Dairy prices, particularly cheese retail prices, have fallen slightly on the back of cooling global prices. For fruit and vegetables, prices have increased by over five per cent in the last quarter alone, largely due to two primary factors - the ongoing labour shortages for picking caused by border restrictions, and the lack of international shipping capacity for those fruits and vegetables which are imported into Australia. “While beef prices may be making the greatest headlines, the price of fruit and vegetables is perhaps the more interesting story as it highlights Australia’s reliance on the importation of certain, cheaper fruits and vegetables,” Ms Swan said. “While the increase in the costs of many food staples is likely to impact lower-income earners, particularly at time where petrol prices are also increasing, the upward pressure on retail prices may continue for the foreseeable future if international conditions continue.”

Silver lining for wool in Chinese power move SHORT-term pain from China’s restrictions on electricity usage could produce long-term gains for wool and a greener future, according to Quality Wool managing director Mark Dyson. Earlier this month, the
Chinese government cut electricity usage by 30 per cent, prompting mills to reduce wool purchases while they monitored the initial impact. The result was a 31-cent drop in the benchmark East-
ern Market Indicator (EMI). Speaking to an audience of more than 80 woolgrowers at a Quality Wool 30th anniversary function at Jamestown in South Australia recently, Mr Dyson said he believed there was no im-

mediate cause for concern for the wool industry despite the heavy impact on other Australian export commodities. “Where wool is somewhat insulated from this is that our other commodities (coal, beef, barley, wine) are consumed within China and don’t generate any export income,” he said. “With wool, they are using 80 per cent for their own domestic needs, but then reexporting 20 per cent - and this is during the challenging COVID landscape. “China has also increased its tariff-free quota of Australian wool under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with five per cent annual increases until 2024, which by then will total over 44,000 tonnes per year. “So the short-term outlook is good.’’ Mr Dyson also said the Chinese wool industry was one of the country’s major employers, while the wellestablished nature of the wool supply chain meant it was unlikely to move overseas. With China being one of the world’s leading emitters of greenhouse gas, he said the recent power cuts, triggered by an enormous surge in the price of coal in mid-2020, would be a gamechanger in global efforts to create a more sustainable future.

around the world moving towards casual attire or people working from home because of the pandemic,” he said. “Hence the reason why the knitwear and semi-worsted markets are very good in comparison to the demand for fleece wool, which is traditionally used by the suiting market.’’ Mr Dyson expected the current positive wool market conditions to continue through to the Christmas sales recess, with good demand particularly for 19.5-micron and finer types.

High-risk plant pest specimens headed for collections
SPECIMENS of some of the world’s most high-risk plant pests from around the globe will be added to Australia’s plant reference collections to boost diagnostic material available to combat biosecurity hazards. Head of biosecurity for the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment Andrew Tongue said the collection of plant pests was critical to Australian biosecurity knowledge and operations.
“All the specimens are of pests on Australia’s National Priority Plant Pests list, which currently lists 42 exotic plant pests and pest groups,” Mr Tongue said. “Some of these specimens have come a long way. “The insect that transmits Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum complex which causes zebra chip disease in potatoes was sent from the Czech Republic; and the exotic stem borers,
which can decimate sugarcane and cereal crops, were sent from South Africa. “Specimens of these plant pests boosts the diagnostic material available to scientists and biosecurity officers, which in turn helps to combat the threat to our biosecurity posed by these pests. “If any were introduced into this country, it could have a significant impact on Australian agriculture and trade. “Take the Hessian fly; up to
40 per cent crop losses have been recorded where there have been severe infestations of this pest overseas, such as in the US and Spain. “Australia’s reference collections contain specimens of fungi, insects, nematodes, bacteria and viruses. “They also record if these pests breach our borders and the impacts they had. “This information is the intellectual bread and butter of our biosecurity op-
User friendly pump automatically switches function in fire emergencies DAVEY Water Products’ Remote Start Firefighter Mark II has proven to be a great adder-on to many homes and farms across the country. The Davey Remote Start Firefighter Mark II is a multi-use petrol powered pump for both firefighting and regular farming tasks, making it a highly versatile addition to rural properties. The Mark II was developed in response to buyer feedback on the original Remote Start Firefighter launched in 2017. The RSFFMkII model offers extended capabilities for broader farm use, while retaining the auto emergency start feature of its predecessor. Davey head of training and education Adam Fairess says many firefighting pumps are never used for fighting fires, which is good because it means properties have not come under fire threat. It does though mean many of these pumps are an under-utilised resource, or simply needed for other applications. “The Mark II allows the pump to be used for everyday tasks like filling stock troughs, operating irriga-
erations and expanding the collection of specimens we have on hand will help us better manage the significant risk these pests could pose for Australia.” The specimens were of the following six pests: exotic invasive ants (Brachyponera chinensis), Banana phytoplasma bacteria (Candidatus Phytoplasma novoguineense), Hessian fly (Mayetiola. destructor), exotic bees (Apis spp.), exotic stem borers

The Davey Remote Start Firefighter Mark II provides SMS confirmation of starts and stops, as well as details about battery charge, phone signal strength and even failures, and the emergency response can be turned off by text or by turning a key at the unit. “People are busy these days and this allows them to know that their property is protected in emergencies, but that their pump can be doing day-to-day operations
in the meantime,” Adam said. “It’s a great combination of practicality and peace of mind.” Davey is Australia’s international water products company, designing, building and selling products to protect and enhance people’s lives with water. THE rapid rise in fertiliser prices could put downward pressure on Australia’s record cattle and sheep prices, particularly if the price hike continues well into 2022, according to ANZ’s latest Agri Commodity Report. The rise in fertiliser prices caused by a range of global events could have a number of ripple-on events to Australian farmers, and indirectly, to the local food supply chain. “The causes of the current spike in fertiliser prices could potentially stay active for some time, particularly given past comparisons,” Michael Whitehead, ANZ’s head food, beverage and agribusiness insights, said. “At the moment, global fertiliser prices have been pushed up partly due to the current high price of gas in Europe, which has caused some fertiliser manufacturers to either shut down or pass on the high input costs.” “China’s recent move to stop fertiliser exports until mid-2022 will further reduce the supply of fertiliser in world markets, exacerbating the upward pressure on prices, as farmers, suppliers and governments globally
seek to ensure some supplies for the coming year.” The last time the world saw a fertiliser price spike similar to the current one was around 2007 to 2009, which was caused by a combination of surging demand driven by record global crop prices, as well as by China imposing high tariffs of fertiliser exports. Prices took between one and two years to return to their previous levels. Depending on the flow-on effect of these global rises to Australian fertiliser suppliers, this could see many farmers re-evaluating their plans for the next year, particularly in terms of sheep and cattle stocking rates. “Sheep and cattle producers may need to re-evaluate the impact high fertiliser costs will have on their bottom line, balancing up their forecasts for sheep, cattle and grain prices, versus increased input costs,” Mr Whitehead said. “It may well be that some livestock producers will choose to reduce their stocking rates, given the potential difference in pasture growth from reduced fertiliser application.
“This could see an easing of re-stocker buying activity, which has been responsible for much of the high prices over the past two years, as livestock producers have sought to take advantage of ample grass through the good post-drought seasons, to rebuild their own herds and flocks.” This could ease the price pressure for meat processors, which has seen meat prices rise at export and domestic retail levels, however, it could also slightly slow the gradual rebuild of Australia’s stock numbers, as they continue to recover from the drought. “Looking further ahead, the fact that domestic fertiliser prices will increasingly be subject to heightened global volatility could see further changes in Australia,” Mr Whitehead said. “In addition to some local companies increasing their fertiliser production and storage capacity, it could also accelerate innovation in areas such as micro-application of fertilisers through AgTech, as well as the development of more non-synthetic fertilisers.”

Dealer sentiment positive about state of the farm machinery industry RESULTS from the recent Tractor and Machinery Association of Australia (TMA) quarterly survey has dealers remaining positive about overall turnover, with 82 per cent of respondents considering business to be good or very good. Executive director of the TMA Gary Northover said that this year is shaping up to be another record breaker for the industry. The extension of the instant write-off provisions has contributed significantly to this situation, with a 20 per cent increase in turnover expectations for the quarter.
Despite many dealers positive about current sales, they do not anticipate turnover will increase in the next six months, more holding steady across all sales from balers and hay tools to tractors, sprayers and combine harvesters. “Baler sales, however, are presently 33 per cent behind last year with 429 units sold against 641 for the same time last year,” said Mr Northover. 2020 saw confidence in the industry riding high, with many consumers purchasing last year and they are now benefiting as they
go into their second season of bumper production. The survey has demonstrated that the used equipment market continues to grow, with dealer sentiment overwhelmingly positive with 90 per cent of respondents expecting sales to remain at current levels or grow further. And with the TMA busy engaging with the ACCC and Productivity Commission on the agricultural machinery market review along with the Right to Repair Report, dealers are reporting that demand for parts sales looks set to increase going forward.
