L’Étape awarded best event WHEN riders line up on the start line for this year’s L’Étape Australia cycling event, they will do so knowing it is the “Best Regional Event” and “Best Public Event” in both NSW and Australia. The L’Étape organisers were recently in Adelaide to collect the prestigious Meeting and Events Australia awards, and additionally won the platinum prize for highest accumulated points from all entrants. Now in its third year, the 2018 route will have some changes with the big news that both the Ride and Race events, two separate distances will both start and finish in Jindabyne. The Race will start at 6.30am and the Ride at 8.30am. Banjo Paterson Park will be headquarters for everything this year, registration, social, start and finish line and the awards ceremony. It is expected that the park will have entertainment and really turn up the atmosphere for the event. The change of route will see the Race event extended to 170km distance, and the Ride slightly shorter than previous years at 108km. One absence on the program is the sprint event, with no green jersey on offer this year through the streets of Berridale. Organisers said the decision was based on a survey showing riders preferring the steep climbs and not the sprint section and associated costs. The first food zone will now be staged in Berridale. Racers have loved this event from

Season snowfalls By Steve Cuff WHAT will this seasons snowfall bring…?? That is the big question we all want to know leading into another winter. The snow forecasters have been busy making their predictions and by all accounts it sounds very promising with ‘about’ average snow depths. The BOM is suggesting we will have more than average precipitation, we just need the temperatures to oblige and stay cold. We have already had two decent falls in early May. Spread a week apart, they started the process of ground cooling and Perisher started their snowmaking with a good preseason base cover on Front Valley in May. As we go to print there is another cold front approaching for the final week of May, plus a weak front schedule for first week of June. With cold temperatures looming all resorts will be looking to add with their snowmaking systems. Then we wait for Mother Nature… and when it arrives we all want to know is how deep it is. Snow depth readings have always been a contentious debate, but what people really need to take into consideration is how these depths relate to their favourite resort. The Snowy Hydro snow depth reading is taken at Spencers Creek, an elevation of 1830m between Perisher and Charlotte Pass. You need to look at that elevation and find a

comparison at your resort. Then take this as a GUIDE ONLY and we emphasise that for a reason as there are many variables. If the resorts have been pumping snowmaking for weeks the snow is going to be deeper than this reading, especially in the early season. You also need to factor that the grooming teams are pushing snow to all areas. No need to have a two-metre pile in one spot and only 30cm in another. Plus windblown snow might be one metre deeper on one side of the run compared to another. So yes, it is always a debate. This is just offerings you the simple guide to understanding what measurements mean. Depending on your skill level on the slopes it can mean much more.

Advanced skiers and snowboarders want more snow and multiple powder days continuing all season long. But for the intermediates who only ski on the groomed runs, the base could 40cm or 400cm, they are still going to be skiing on the same top few centimetres. The point is, snow depth can have many different meanings to different people. A good gauge to use is when the official NSW snow depth reaches 100cm, you know that resorts are really starting to open all terrain and you can pick and choose some off piste deeper pockets. Once that magic number hits 125cm you should be thinking to yourself, the skiing is pretty decent now. You will be sliding across the whole resort and then picking your off

piste runs, some still with caution. Anything beyond 125cm and the smile dial starts to ramp up with each approaching storm, as you know that any new snow from now on will just be filling in more pockets and making your powder turns that much sweeter. 2018 Australian Ski and Snowboard Awards AUSTRALIA’S elite ski and snowboard athletes gathered in Melbourne in May to recognise the best achievements from the 2017-2018 season and the PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Olympic silver medallists Matt Graham and Jarryd Hughes were jointly awarded the prestigious Athlete of the Year Award. Paralympic gold and bronze medallist Simon Patmore received the Paralympic Athlete of the Year award. Matt Graham has been a strong performer on the World Cup mogul circuit having previously won and podiumed on several occasions. Graham capped off a great year with a silver medal in his second Winter Olympics and wins this award for the second time. Jarryd Hughes is a dual Olympian, won the silver medal in boardercross in PyeongChang and is a contender in every event he competes. His inspirational medal performance also saw him lead the Australian team out in the closing ceremony as the flag bearer. In his first Paralympic Winter Games, Simon Patmore stole the show to break Australia’s 16-year gold medal drought when he won the snowboard cross at the PyeongChang Winter Paralympic Games. This achievement was instrumental in him winning Paralympic athlete of the year. Making her Olympic Games debut with a stellar 4th place, 19-year-old mogul skier Jakara Anthony won Junior Snowsport athlete of the year. Valentino Guseli confirmed he is a name to watch out for in the future with the 12-year-old snowboarder winning the Rising Star award after another great season in his age category. Steve Desovich won coach of the year for
the eighth time and was instrumental in the strong performance of the mogul team including Matt Graham’s silver medal. Head Coach of the 2018 Paralympic Para-Snowboard team, Lukas Prem won Paralympic coach of the year and contributed immensely to Simon Patmore’s gold and bronze medals as well as Ben Tudhope and Sean Pollard’s PyeongChang Paralympic Games. Peter McNiel was awarded Development coach of the year for the third time for his efforts in overseeing the junior squad and Canberra Grammar School was named as school of the year. Ski and Snowboard Australia CEO Michael Kennedy said the 2017-2018 season was a standout for Australia’s top snow sport athletes, with many worthy nominees and winners. “The athletes along with their coaches and support teams, have done a fantastic job across the domestic and international season, capped off with the amazing performances in PyeongChang. “The multi medal performances at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games combined with the outstanding way our athletes presented themselves in the media is a credit to them and their programs. The Australian public are becoming increasingly aware of how competitive we are as a nation on the international stage. There is an increasing expectation of success which can only be a good thing. “The performances recognised at the Australian Ski and Snowboard awards symbolise both our current success and the fantastic prospects we have into the future,” he said.

Road and transport SNOW visitors will see a welcomed addition to the Jindabyne road system with the completion of a second outbound lane to the snow resorts. Starting from the Barry Way roundabout, the new dual lane road should alleviate the bulk of traffic jams drivers had to endure on busy weekends in past seasons. The traffic issue was a huge problem with thousands of cars coming from all directions heading to the snowfields who started banking up in Jindabyne from an early hour. Now once through the Barry Way motorists travelling to Thredbo and Skitube will need to eventually merge to the left lane while people driving direct to Perisher will stay in the right lane. With cooperation from all drivers and some merging etiquette it could be a streamlined morning even on the busiest days. The emphasis here is on motorists allowing cars to merge one for one, especially coming down the hill on the Barry Way. Residents who must start work early on the weekends may finally have some reprieve and be allowed to have a normal start to the day without having to leave an hour early for a ten-minute drive.
CHAINS AND 4WD VEHICLES During winter it is compulsory to carry chains for 2-wheel drive cars when entering Kosciuszko National Park and driving to Perisher. It is recommended to carry chains when driving to Thredbo. When it is snowing, or roads are considered icy due to rain freezing or due, you could be directed to put chains on at any given time. If you do not have chains you will be turned around and not allowed entry It is advisable to hire them in Jindabyne or earlier towns on the route. Owners of 4WD vehicles are exempt from carrying chains in NSW, but if you are travelling to Victorian resorts it is compulsory for all vehicles. 4WD VEHICLE RENTAL Visitors who prefer to avoid the hassle of fitting chains can hire 4WD vehicles from Alpen Auto Rentals in Berridale or at Rentme.One opposite the Thredbo turnoff at the Shell service station in Jindabyne. At Berridale you can leave your car in secure lockup and rent a vehicle for your holiday. Alpen Auto Rentals also have cars, vans and trailers for any requirement, see ad below.

SHUTTLES Jindabyne have great choices for guests who want to avoid driving to the snowfields themselves and would prefer to take a shuttle. You can see details on pages 52 and 53 in our Business Listing guide for shuttle buses and private transfers. Depending on the company and what you require there are either schedule times and meeting places or you call for private bookings.

Alpine Historical Conference By Steve Cuff
MEMBERS of alpine historical societies and interested guests attended the Australian Alpine & Snowsports History Association (AASHA) conference at Perisher in May. Attendees were treated to a wealth of local snow history with key note speakers revealing some extraordinary tales and information. Perisher Resort Chief Operating Officer Peter Brulisauer spoke about his early life in Perisher, with both parents working in Perisher Valley, plus an insight into the current Vail Resorts situation (see story page22). Author Peter Southwell-Keely detailed the history of skiing at Perisher, Smiggins and Guthega areas plus how they developed, with Snow Revellers the first lodge built in 1950 and Johnny Abbottsmith living at Smiggins Holes. It is hard to imagine now, but in this 1950-60’s period ski club members were a tough breed, building lodges by carting material to remote locations and negotiating snowfalls without todays modern conveniences. They were instrumental in the development of the resorts. The Hotel Kosciusko which we now know as Sponars (near the Guthega turnoff) has a fascinating history. Author Donald Johnston recited many key points including the big fire of 1951 which destroyed all but the staff quarters of the building which is what we see today. A Sponars conference tour on Sunday revealed some great history and photographs
of its glory days, including a nine-hole golf course across the road. In 1959 Tony Sponar purchased the building and it became known as Sponars Lakeside Inn. It has just recently sold to new owners. Rick Walkom, author of the book “Skiing off the Roof” presented a history of Charlotte Pass including the fire of 1938 when the Chalet burned down and incredible film footage of skiing in the 1930’s. Watching people ski and being taught new skiing techniques in those days was quite humorous. Ron Finneran spoke on behalf of the Disabled Wintersports Australia and Leon Smith recited many interesting tales of life touring the Main Range in the 1950’s, including the Kunama Hutte and Northcotte rope tow. Incumbent AASHA President Alan Fredericks conducted the annual general meeting where Ŷ HISTORY: The group who attended the conference. An official dinner at Corroboree Lodge in Perisher, which had become headquarters for the weekend was a great evening with old tales recited before a Sunday bus tour of Charlotte Pass, Guthega and Sponars completed the conference. BUSINESS owners and guests attended The Station Resort in Jindabyne in May for the inaugural Snowy Monaro Business Awards. From small business, entrepreneurs, innovation and business leaders, the night was a huge success where dedicated business operators were nominated for their excellence, and the winners awarded stylish plaques to mark the occasion. The awards are a partnership between the region’s Chambers of Commerce and Snowy Monaro Regional Council and is a night to celebrate local businesses. Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro John Barilaro along with Mayor John Rooney and hosting Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce President Bruce Easton spoke highly of all the entrants and how the region had a wealth of great businesses that needed recognition. Mr Barilaro said that without small business owners showing courage to invest in their business, NSW would not have the vibrant thriving economy that it has at this stage. “To each and everyone one of, thank you for what you do, because you are important to the economy” said Mr Barilaro. Snowy Mountains Magazine were honoured to receive the Start Up Supertsar award for our magazine that has been in circulation since October 2016. Matt jointly won the Australian Athlete of the Year award in May on top of his Olympic mogul skiing silver medal and has had a stellar rise in the mogul ranks over the past five years. During winter, Matt lives in Jindabyne and trains on snow at Perisher where he has been in the Winter Sports Club and the mogul program since his early days on snow. Matt will continue his training in Perisher this coming winter, with the World Championships earmarked in 2019 in Are Sweden and long term, chasing an Olympic
gold medal at the 2022 winter games in Beijing. 2018 marked redemption for Matt, who as a young 19 year old at the Sochi Olympics in 2014 came agonisingly close to reaching the moguls skiing final, missing out by just 0.01 of a point, to finish 7th. Matt was thoroughly gracious in defeat and through hard work and determination he set his sights on PyeongChang 2018 and it paid off with a great silver medal. WILDBRUMBY has confirmed its popular Baked Apple Schnapps will be back on the shelves this winter, and the distillery will also be toasting its Peach Nectar schnapps following its success at this year’s Australian Distilled Spirits Awards. Peach Nectar Schnapps is one of the distillery’s classic range and boasts a rich succulent flavour that helped to earn it the gold medal in the Schnapps Liqueur category. Although schnapps distilleries are native to the European Alps, where the winters are too cold to make wine, distiller Brad Spalding has developed many varieties of schnapps here in the Snowy Mountains, which have proven extremely popular among visitors. The Australian Distilled Spirits Award is the only national awards program recognising excellence in Australian distilled spirits and liqueurs and is run by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria. “We are honoured that one of our classic schnapps products has received a gold medal in this prestigious category,” says Wildbrumby founder, Brad Spalding. “Schnapps is not a traditionally Australian spirit, but we have developed a unique twist on European schnapps, that is especially tailored to local palates.” Wildbrumby has been in the spirits business
for well over a decade. It was one of the first craft distilleries established in Australia and introduced schnapps – that quintessential tipple from the European Alps – to Australian snow sports enthusiasts. This latest award follows recent successes with its Classic, Rubus Patch and Stallion gin, which have all claimed ‘Gold’ at international spirits competitions in Melbourne and Asia. The distillery was also named as a leading food and drink innovator in 2017 in the book Celebrating Australian Food and Agribusiness Innovations, which showcased

The next journey By Steve Cuff` WINTER OLYMPICS come around once every four years, a time where athletes focus all their energy for a few precious weeks. The games can either be a time that can define a career or in the same breath destroy years of dreams. Australia fared very well in PyeongChang, winning three medals and coming agonisingly close on other occasions. Some athletes had personal best games and showed huge potential while for others it will be one big blur as they wonder what happened. We as spectators now wait for Beijing in China 2022, but the long journey starts all again for the athletes. This next season is one to readjust any plans, head back to the gym and then jump back on the “White Circus” that is the World Cup. In our past edition we ran a series of stories and this edition have more photo galleries from the games. You can see all our past Winter Olympic stories and coverage on our website, snowymagazine.com.au and in our July edition we will have one final Winter Olympic section. If you see our athletes on the snow, wish them all the best in their upcoming journeys, as four years is one hell of a long time to start that dream over again.

SPORT can often be cruel, and while some athletes celebrated medal glory at PyeongChang, it was a sore point for others as they left South Korea either busted or bruised. Starting the games under an injury cloud is one thing, but for athletes like Cameron Bolton, Anton Grimus and Tess Coady, the Phoenix Park courses certainly dished out the punishment. Bolton was having one of his best meetings ever and was right in contention progressing strongly through to the semi finals. A crash in that race left him with a broken wrist but rather than pull out, he was strapped and then completed the small final. The pain was obvious as he was attended to by the team doctor but he continued on. Although having no strength to push out of the gate, Bolton showed great commitment to finish his Olympic campaign, would eventually finish tenth but gain huge respect from the world audience. Skier cross athlete Anton Grimus could

possibly feel a bit cursed. Having had his fair share of injuries the past few years, he might have hoped for a clean slate in South Korea. That was not to be, in the seeding run he crashed injuring his shoulder. This put paid to any Olympic prospects and although he made it to the start gate in the top 32, he could not progress to the quarter finals and finished 30th. Grimus was philosophical about the result saying, "There's consequences, especially on the big stage, everyone's going hard, that's how it is." While the skier and border cross course was taking its toll on athletes, the slopestyle jumps produced their own source of pain for young Australian slopestyle snowboarder Tess Coady. Competing in her maiden Winter Olympics and with an infectious smile earlier in the week, she would suffer a crash during the training warm up prior to the start. On a blustery windy day where athletes are also taking large air of the huge jumps, a wind shift would unbalance Coady and her games were gone in an
instance as she crashed heavily when hitting the ground. To rub salt into her wound, the race would be postponed that afternoon due to the wind and unsafe conditions. If only that postponement decision had been made earlier, Coady could have shown what her talent can deliver.

Early choices By Steve Cuff PERISHER guests will have better choices this season after the company advised that key lifts the Terminal Chair and Summit Chair at Blue Cow will open at 8.30am. At Perisher itself, Centre Valley lifts will also open at 8.30am so skiers and boarders can start to make their way from Front Valley anticipating other lift openings. It has always been frustrating that you must wait until 9pm for the longer Blue Cow lifts to open, but now with this early start you will access good fall line from the outset. This may well change peoplesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; morning plans of what resort area they start. From a skierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s point of view, I know I would rather be riding the Summit Chair at 8.30, lap some
nice long runs on Zaliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s steeper pitch and await the Ridge Chair to open. Between these two lifts you have the longest and most consistent pitch, apart from Olympic. On their day they can produce great groomed runs and numerous off piste options. Naturally snow conditions and weather play a part in this schedule and people would understand some days where it may be snowy that deicing the lifts can take time and may alter those times marginally. But even skiing off the Terminal Chair is a better option than cruising Early Starter double. For guests starting at Perisher, the Village 8 is always in demand for ďŹ rst runs. The wide open Front Valley slope is a favourite starting point for most Perisher people. For the savvy adventurous type
though, a few runs here could be enough especially if fresh snow is appealing in Centre Valley. As you work your way across you can pick up fresh lines with tree cover on stormy days and be ready to pounce over to Mt Perisher closer to the 9am opening. These new times should help disperse crowds more efďŹ ciently, as well as open better terrain earlier. More importantly it will help with any frustration of trying to get to the good stuff. Perisher management have also been pro-active in recent years, often loading the Perisher Quad earlier than the schedule where conditions allow. New Chair for 2019 ENJOY riding the Leichhardt T-bar this winter as it will be a swansong season for the lift after the announcement during summer that a new quad chair will be built for the 2019 season. Including additional snowmaking in the same area, the investment will be $4.2 million and the new chair will increase lifting capacity by 75%. The new chairlift will have the same easy conveyor load system as the Freedom Quad Chair at Guthega. This is a key piece of the future puzzle for any other new lifts that will eventuate at some point on Mt Perisher. Leichhardt and Happy Valley are the only exit points from Mt Perisher, so it makes good sense to alleviate some trafďŹ c issues here before anything else can happen. One great aspect of this new quad chair is that beginners and

intermediates will have a great loop from the top of the chair, down and around Snowy Trails back to the chair. This was not as feasible before as at this level they could not always negotiate the steeper T-bar ride. The freeriders will also like the
quicker lap time on the Leichhardt Terrain Park plus on stormy days the Powder Ridge haven is renowned for deeper snow. Work is set to commence on the new structure immediately at the end of winter 2018.

GUESTS Attending the Perisher Historical Society’s annual dinner this June long weekend are in for a treat with Johnny Abbottsmith’s son Garry Abbottsmith and daughters Faye Pendergast and Diane Hampshire guest speakers. Johnny was instrumental in the early days of the snow industry where he initially started work at the Hotel Kosciusko before living in Smiggins with his young family. He started the first rope tow and at one stage had a sled dog team and offered transport services. Few people achieve the status of ‘Legend’ in the minds of the community but Johnny Abbottsmith was such a person in the Perisher Range and in Antarctica where he has a glacier named after him. “I was born in Sydney, the last of four, then
brought to Smiggins in a blizzard when I was one month old,” said Garry Abbottsmith “When we lived at Smiggins we used to play in foundations of the old Smiggins Hotel, because they partly built that before the war and then after the war they didn’t finish it off. “In Smiggins our heating was mainly kerosene, so we really smelt like kerosene. We also went to Island Bend a lot, as that was the nearest town (during Snowy Scheme construction).” Garry and his sisters will recite many more great memories of their father and growing up in the snow at the Perisher dinner on Sunday June 10. PEOPLE looking for something different this winter can learn how to cross country ski at Perisher no matter what level you are. The Faster Masters cross country programmes are designed to improve your technique in the classic and/or skating disciplines and are suited to all levels. The courses are run by instructor Jane Scheer over four separate weeks (dates below), with each session comprising of two hours of instruction in groups of 6-7 people maximum. The aim of the programmes is to progress participants skills each week and see a vast improvement on your technique and skills at the end of the programme. Skiers and snowboarders would be familiar with similar programs conducted by the resorts, such as the alpine masters, or kids programmes, where each week you attend clinics through the course of the season. “There was no such programme available for cross country skiers a couple of years ago,” said Jane. “Not only do the participants love the social aspect of the programmes but they continue to give me feedback on how much they love learning to improve their technique and are often pleasantly surprised how technique-oriented this skiing discipline is.” The programmes are run under the auspices of K7 Cross Country Ski School, a division of K7 Adventures. K7 Cross Country Ski School employs seven APSI (Australian Professional Ski Instructors)

Perisher Peak Party PERISHER is set for a huge opening weekend with snowfalls in May kickstarting the snow and the Peak Music Festival ready to amp up the entertainment. To add an extra layer of excitement, Peak Music Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2018 and everyone is invited to what is bound to be one big Perisher Peak Party. Four days of music set across 10 venues with 35+ artists will have tunes rocking the slopes and playing the “Coolest Music in the Mountains”. Starting on Friday night from 6pm, the Smiggs Hotel have six acts including Felicity Lawless, Allensworth and up and coming girl group Haiku Hands. The Sundeck has Taster Concerts with a plethora of artists and the Man from Snowy River Hotel start their weekend with four acts including Nomika and Electrik Lemonade. Once the weekend hits the music is in full swing including big headline act Dan Sultan playing Saturday night at the Smiggs Hotel. Such is the demand that Saturday night only passes are sold out, however the best way to guarantee you don’t miss Dan Sultan is to buy the 4 Day Pass.
With over 70 separate gigs alone on the weekend, the festival is jam packed including The Con Artists, Balkan Elvis, Hussy Hicks, Sahara Beck, Cigany Weaver, The Water Runners, Hot Potato Band, Cool Out Sun, JUKes, Matt Glass and the Loose Cannons and CJ Shaw to name just a few. The community stage in the Perisher Centre will have 30-minute sets from 11am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday plus there will be pop up buskers supported by the Cooma School of Music. There is constant music playing and you just stroll to a new venue in Perisher Valley or take the free shuttle bus to Smiggins. Plus, for any travel to The Sundeck on the mountain, just call the number on your wristband. To make it super easy to navigate your way to your favourite venue or artists, the Peak Festival will debut a brand new Peak App that will have the full program, venue information, artist details and when they play. The App will be released just before the event. Access is easy from Jindabyne, with free buses from Jindabyne to Perisher and return with Snowy Mountains Shuttles or take the bus direct from Canberra. Will lease eventuate?
By Steve Cuff PERISHER Chief Operating Officer Peter Brulisauer spoke about various topics at the Australian Alpine & Snowsports History Association conference in May. During question time most people asked questions about the future, the village, summer and where Perisher stand in regard to any new Perisher Range head lease situation. Mr Brulisauer said they were not opposed to summer, but that if anything they would prefer to look at doing something unique. When asked are they still going to invest in the future if they don’t have the head lease, he replied. “There has been representation made by S.L.O.P.E.S, the chamber and Perisher together to the government saying that we would like to
see some change in governance arrangement and the preferred model would be the head lease.” “Now I am not sure where that will go or whether a head lease would eventuate or not. Where we invest will depend on what lease rights we have. If we only have lease rights over ski lifting and we don’t have lease rights over anything else, we can’t make those investments. “If our commercial structure is such that an investment in winter is where we think we are going to best provide our guest with an improvement in their experience and a return on our capital, then that’s where we will provide investment. “So that leasing structure has to allow for those types of investment.”

The athletes start INTERSCHOOLS may be a busy few weeks in July for schools trying to qualify for state and Australian championships, but it is also where the journey started for many of Australia’s best snow athletes. The Interschools Snowsports events are suitable for all levels of skiers and snowboarders and thousands of students have been introduced to the snow and competitive ski and snowboard competitions through the Interschools Championships. While many students compete for the first time as a bit of fun with their school friends, for other students it is a starting point for further competition and the initial pathway for aspiring professional athletes. In the past 30 years over 35 Winter Olympian and Paralympian athletes in NSW and ACT have started their career at Interschools Snowsports competitions. In the future there will no doubt be many more. We asked some of our recent PyeongChang Australian athletes who represented at the recent games in South Korea about when they competed in Interschools, and what was their favourite memory. Thredbo season opener THREDBO will be the place to be this winter and they kick off their season opening weekend with one mighty big party on June 9-11. Into its second decade the Snow Series has seen some of Australia’s best athletes launch
their career with many Olympians and industry big names getting their first taste of competition over the years at this event. With each different discipline utilising different aspects of the resort, the new setups and Thredbo’s challenging terrain will dictate what manoeuvres go down with the bar being raised each year. While the big named seasoned pros will surely enter to chase the glory and prizes, each set-up allows competitors of all levels to compete and the skill level pushes all competitors to their best. There are 12 categories in each event open to skiers, boarders, juniors, opens, girls, boys and anyone willing to test their own skill. You can either enter single events or compete in the whole series to be crowned the 2018 Thredbo Snow Series champion. Whether you slide the rail like a champion or bust the big air like a chump, rip up the Bluff like a king but flap about the Ridercross course; the overall riding strengths and participation are the key to win the overall glory and be crowned champion. Spectators are welcome to stop by and view all the action from the side lines as there will be a DJ providing the tunes, fun giveaways and refreshments thanks to Coca Cola at every event.

SNOW enthusiasts are forever seeking new adventures, and this season Thredbo have teamed up with North Face to launch a great selection of guided backcountry escapes. Not content with just ripping up the inbounds terrain, you can now travel with experienced guides chasing fresh lines on easy terrain or the best hidden steeps beyond the boundary ropes. Venturing into Thredboâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backyard will open your snow world to the Australian Main Range, a vast and spectacular snow playground full of unlimited exploration. The tours will also combine vital safety and backcountry skills to make you more aware of the backcountry environment. Thredbo has rallied together a team of some of the best backcountry guides in the Southern Hemisphere, with all guides having appropriate certiďŹ cation, experience and an undeniable passion for the outdoors. Former SAS soldier Jake Iskov is the lead guide and has a high level of experience previously training Australian Army groups in the Main Range. Jennie Milton, a backcountry ski enthusiast boasts over 20 years of experience guiding beyond Thredbo and can unveil some of her secret spots. Finally, Doug Chatten is an ex pro ski patroller and very experienced guide who has spent countless weeks and months skiing gnarly lines and guiding groups to the freshest snow stashes. No matter whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your ďŹ rst time in the backcountry, or you are an avid adventurer, there is a tour to suit all levels. MENTION of a new lift raises everyone spirits to start a new season, but there is potential for a new Gondola to replace the aging Merritts Chair at Thredbo in coming years. At this stage only a development application (DA) has been submitted, but that news alone will get the Thredbo faithful rising to fever pitch. Thredbo management have opted not to make any comment at this stage, but the plan would be for a detachable gondola to be built not this coming summer as previously thought but commencing in the 2019-20 summer. This could make the lift functional for winter 2020. The gondola would have a mid-station located further on the uphill side than the current Merritts mid station. The Merritts Chair is the oldest in the Thredbo fleet, built in 1967, and a new gondola would
be ideal for use in winter plus summer with access to the mountain bike trials from the Merritts Mountain House restaurant down. Plus, the new lift could be used for sightseeing in both seasons. The lift has a potential hefty price tag of over $12 million if it is to be approved by the Thredbo board but would be welcomed with open arms by skiers and snowboarders. It would increase lift capacity from 520 people per hour on current chair to 2000 people per hour on new gondola. Not only would it be vastly better for first timers and intermediates riding within a cabin to the Cruiser area, it is another great option out of the Valley Terminal (village side) on busy days to alleviate traffic. Solar Power for Leisure Centre THREDBO have continued their commitment to the environment installing a large scale solar system on the curved roof of the Thredbo Leisure Centre. Comprising around 290 panels, the system is 20 times the size of your average house system and is set to
supply close to 20% of the centre’s electricity. The Leisure Centre is very popular during winter where kids and families enjoy the water slide after a morning on the slopes and the pool and gym perfect for those wanting to stay in shape.

DURING summer there is never a dull moment for the snowmaking and mountain crews as they dig and refine, plus add new infrastructure to make more snow and our travels easier on the slopes. The Central Spur area has seen work to improve traffic flow between the Cruiser and High Noon side of the resort across to the Supertrail. The Traverse has received slope works and new snowmaking around the Sponars area and improved access to the Catwalk. The Cruiser Terrain Park will now have greater reliability of snow with new snowmaking added to help maintain the features and quality of the park. With favourable weather, this could allow greater opportunities to open the park earlier and prolong its season to stay open later. RENTAL OPTIONS Skiers looking for introductory solutions to the backcountry can visit Thredbo Sports who have a brand-new fleet of equipment options for 2018. Skiers can hire the incredibly low weight and super impressive Volkl VTA 80’s plus mohair skins to access the backcountry. Plus, for alpine skiers and snowboarders, their vast fleet can accommodate all levels for rental. For those preferring to snow shoe, the Tubbs Flex snow shoes are lighter, more flexible and

Torah’s Mini Shred FAMILIES visiting Thredbo for the July school holidays will love to know that Torah Bright’s Mini Shred is on again on July 15. Torah says it is her favourite day of the season, and all the kids attending each year think it’s the best day ever. THREDBO will once again crank up the music and après scene for 2018 with a host of great parties and scheduled entertainment. Just because your daily mountain exploits are finished does not mean you need to slow down. Simply change gear (and ski boots) and start your night session at one of the vibrant bars or restaurants that fill the village. Last year the Heineken Saturday concerts proved a great success creating a huge atmosphere in the village. This season the artists and music will be bigger than ever, starting the opening weekend and again on August 25. Après ski in Aspen and Snowmass Village is treated as more than just something to do after a day of skiing and riding - it’s considered a lifestyle. Sun Peaks in Canada has been a regular fixture on Australian radars and is also perfect for families. With a quaint village and a quieter atmosphere, it has plenty of positives to entice you. There is a great mix of terrain for all levels that can see you blasting top to bottom on perfect corduroy or whisking through the pine trees on a great powder day. Sun Peaks has also announced $60m in resort developments including a new quad chair. This is a great news for one of the best ski in ski out villages. Banff in Canada offers a great all-round experience to skiers particularly the younger market. The town is very vibrant with lots of restaurants, bars, nightlife and some great shopping. You can ski at nearby Norquay, or catch transport to Sunshine Village and Lake Louise, the latter a huge resort and all with some of the best scenery in Canada. Australians have a strong affiliation with Japanese resorts and everyone has heard about the legendary powder snow. Niseko is continuing to grow and still is the most popular with the Australian market for resorts in Japan, but smaller resorts are now on the radar. Skiers are finding these boutique areas very appealing with more Japanese culture and less crowds. The tradition of skiing the European Alps is always popular. Val d’Isere, in the Savoie area of France is a big drawcard where you have huge terrain options that will see you skiing for hours one way before returning to the charming village. There has been lots of interest in Lech and St. Anton in Austria, where you will find tradition is part of the furniture here. Main Range Legend By Paul Pearce “WE turned over the brink, steeply down on to a wide open slope of good, firm, windpacked powder and at a continuously steep angle that made us breathless with surprise and excitement; then swung downwards in two or three long sweeps and on to the faint beginnings of a ridge that fanned out steeply below us. Beyond it, leading the way we wanted to go, a broad gully dropped swiftly. More swings at a pace that was glorious, and then clapped my skis together and schussed with that sense of tremendous exhilaration which never fails to come from racing thus down the high slopes.” These are the words of 28 year-old Elyne Mitchell, who in 1941 was one of the first people, and certainly the first woman, to ski down the 2200 vertical feet of the north face of Twynam West Ridge. She did it on heavy wooden skis and simple Kandahar cable bindings. Even today, these vast slopes of the western faces of the Main Range are skied by the very few but Elyne came to know this remote alpine area with the familiarity of her own backyard. Once bitten by the bug, backcountry skiing and exploration became her lifelong passion. Elyne was the daughter of Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Chauvel, the leader of the Australian Army Light Horse in the First World War. She married an upper Murray Valley local and leading skier, Tom Mitchell, in 1935 and lived on the family property at Towong Hill for the remainder of her very interesting life. She was the author of 22 books on subjects ranging across skiing, history, ecology and fiction, including her quite famous Silver Brumby series of children’s books. Her introduction to skiing began in 1935 when she and Tom rode up to Mt Buller on
horseback and she was left by him and his mates to get into her skis for the first time on her own, with no lesson on what to do next! She was a fast learner. The next winter they rode from their property up the Hannels Spur and toured across to Charlottes Pass. She represented Australia in the Inter-Dominion race with New Zealand and won the Canadian Women’s National Downhill. This woman could ski and she was tough – during her years of skiing she broke her leg twice and suffered numerous other injuries pursuing her passion. The few years before the outbreak of World War II seem to have been her happiest, when she and Tom constantly toured and skied over Main Range terrain from Townsend in the south up to Grey Mare mountain and Mt Jagungal in the north and across to Mt Pinnibar due west of the Tom Groggin station. There were no roads up onto the range then, just cattlemen’s trails, many, doubtless following earlier age-old indigenous tracks. Her most common entry points to the Main Range were by the Hannels Spur, or up along the ridges of the Grey Mare range (near today’s Geehi Dam) and also via Wolsey Gap which was closer to their home. Tom went to war, an officer in the AIF’s 8th Division that surrendered to the Japanese in Singapore in 1941 and he spent the remainder of the war in Changi prison. The war years were very tough ones for Elyne. These were the lonely years when she began her long career as an author. “A long schuss in light powder snow over a firm base, and then two quick turns brought us to the drop into the narrow gully. I swung down into it and found myself almost in a funnel, somewhat icy, in which I could only swing banked turns on one side and then the other. It narrowed swiftly and then suddenly
rushed me out on to a steep, sticky snow slope. Below were some rocks with only a narrow opening to let me through on to a practically invisible slope beyond.” This was Elyne’s first venture onto the western faces and she was describing her descent down Strzelecki Creek off the saddle between Twynam West Ridge and the Sentinel. She climbed out and proceeded to ski down the gully between Carruthers West Ridge and the Sentinel, after some lunch, of course! “The top of our gully… was icy, and I made my first turn with great caution. Below, far below, was what looked like a hanging valley. Then I swung down and down, still further wondering to find myself skiing on the walllike side of the Main Range with the strangely bottomless feeling that these great gullies give.” This was a drop of 1000 vertical feet or 300plus metres, with an exhausting climb out on heavy skis and rudimentary skins – the second big climb on the same day. Tough. Two weeks later she skied the northern face of Twynam West Ridge mentioned above. After the war and Tom’s return, their adventures continued but in 1958 Tom suffered a serious leg injury on the property and never skied again. These two were also responsible for naming iconic places on the Main Range. In 1934, Tom Mitchell and his mate George Day did the first known descent of Mt Townsend and on their way out of Lady Northcote Canyon on the opposite side towards Mt Lee they named the face they climbed ‘Little Austria’ for its Arlberg-like appearance. Elyne named “the sharp, narrow peak that guards the gully below the Twynam/ Carruthers saddle Sentinel Peak.” These days it’s just called the Sentinel. In fact, another famous ski tourer, Bert Schlink, called it the

The Mitchells not only dared to ski many of the forbidding runs of the Western Faces but also undertook some hair-raising adventures in summer. In 1948 they and two others drove two army jeeps from their home at Towong Hill 120 kilometres to the Chalet at Charlottes Pass. There were no roads, just steep terrain, heavy bush, numerous river-crossings and bogs. Elyne Mitchell died in March 2002 at the age of 88. Once you know her story, it is hard not to ponder her exploits whenever one tours the Main Range. These days, the word ‘legend’ is too easily used, but legend is most fitting when applied to Elyne Mitchell. She embodies the term both in her exploits on the snow and in the way she lived her life. Kosciuszko $27 million summer investment By Steve Cuff KOSCIUSZKO National Park will see a huge $27 million investment over the next five years after an announcement in April from Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro. In what is sensational news for the Snowy Mountains region, $10 million will be allocated to completing the Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) in 2019 from Lake Crackenback Resort to Jindabyne, plus in 2020 an uphill extension of the track from Thredbo to Dead Horse Gap. The main investment of $17 million will be directed to a brand-new Kosciuszko Snowies Iconic Walk from Charlotte Pass, via Guthega and Perisher and finishing at Lake Crackenback Resort. This new 25 kilometre section of track will traverse across the Main Range with works starting at Mt Lee in 2019 and take four years to finish. As each section is finished it will be open to hikers. Mr Barilaro said the project will completely transform summer tourism in the region and the new Iconic Walk will be a signature walk of NSW. The development of these hiking and biking trails will also ensure the region is vibrant and busy all year-round. “The economic benefits let alone the social, environmental and health benefits of a project like this, can’t be overstated,” said Mr Barilaro. “The work on the trails is expected to create a combined 139 full-time jobs in the region over the course of their construction. Once delivered, the upgraded National Park is expected to support an additional 190 fulltime positions.” The new Iconic Walk will be a combination of rock paved paths and elevated platforms and will ideally complement the existing Main Range Track and the highly popular walk from Thredbo to Mt Kosciuszko. When completed it will create a multi-day walk from Thredbo via Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko, to Charlotte Pass, Guthega, Perisher and Lake Crackenback Resort, a world-class 44 kilometre multiday walk. At a launch at Bullocks Hut on the Thredbo
River near Lake Crackenback Resort, a strong gathering of local identities and interested parties welcomed the exciting news. Tourism Snowy Mountains’ Wayne Kirkpatrick introduced the main speakers, Mr Barilaro and Mick Pettitt, Director of the Southern Ranges Branch of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. “The actual works on the Main Range, the “Iconic Walk” will kick off again next year, basically our construction period is fairly short because of snow and moisture so we kick off when snow conditions allow and that will be at Mt Lee,” said Mr Pettitt. “Walking has always been an important component within the National Parks reserve system, so it is trying to look at value adding to walkers. Mountain bike riding has certainly increased in the last few years, so it is a combination of different ideas, different demands and different sort of requests from community about access to parks and use for parks.” At present NPWS have a design which shows the rough corridor of where the walking track will be built, and there will be finer delineation of the actual finished track as more detailed plans are finalised. The big beneficiaries will be tourists to the region who have predominately visited in summer months for either a walking experience or a mountain biking adventure. Both these activities have seen very strong growth in recent years and with this announcement, will only add to the strength of our region’s outdoor activities appeal. Tourism Snowy Mountains’ Wayne Kirkpatrick thanked all the people involved and their support so far for the Thredbo Valley Track in particular, and for NPWS who have embraced the concept of parks are for people. As the new Iconic Walk is developed, its route will include Guthega, a small alpine village with spectacular views of the Main Range and Guthega Dam. This a popular part of Perisher Resort during the snow season. Guthega Alpine Inn owner Nick Kennedy said, “We’ve been very excited about this whole project and the wonderful thing is that Guthega

has reinvigorated in the last decade and it’s a place that’s had an enclave of well run and well managed and highly active clubs (lodges) in the summer, so Guthega will be a really interested place to visit.” While the Iconic Walk is being built, the Thredbo Valley Track when fully completed will also have the strength to be added to the International Mountain Biking Association’s Epic status of trails. There are three levels of Epic status from bronze, silver and gold, each showcasing to the world of mountain biking as being a significance ride. This alone will be a massive boost to our mt bike reputation that is growing by the year.

Brumby heritage bill THE NSW Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro announced that the NSW Government has approved new legislation that will recognise and protect the heritage value and cultural significance of the Snowy Mountains brumby. The announcement was greeted with mixed reactions and the debate will rage on for many years yet. The brumby advocate groups and supporters were relieved that the 2016 Wild Horse Draft Management plan which was to reduce numbers to 600 in 20 years was now off the table. Environmental groups were appalled at the decision that they say will continue to erode areas of park. Mr Barilaro made the announcement at Currango Plains in the Kosciuszko National Park on May 20 and said the new laws will finally end years of speculation around the culling of one of Australia’s national icons. “Wild brumbies have been roaming the Australian alps for almost 200 years and are part of the cultural fabric and folklore of the high country,” Mr Barilaro said. “The Minister for the Environment and I will introduce a Bill into the NSW Parliament that will recognise the heritage value of the brumby in Kosciuszko National Park and set a
framework for protecting it,” he said. Dubbed the ‘Brumbies Bill’, the new laws will require the Minister for the Environment to prepare a heritage management plan for the brumby, which will identify areas within the Kosciuszko National Park where populations will be maintained and set rules around brumby management. “The heritage management plan will specifically prohibit lethal culling of the brumby, aerial or otherwise, and will identify those areas in the park where brumbies can roam without causing significant environmental harm,” Mr Barilaro said. “If brumbies are found in highly-sensitive alpine areas of Kosciuszko National Park, resources will be allocated towards relocation first, followed by re-homing, should population numbers grow too high. “I have always opposed cruel forms of culling and have advocated for non-lethal ways of managing brumby numbers. “Kosciuszko National Park exists to protect the unique environment of the Snowy Mountains, and that unique environment includes wild brumbies,” he said. The legislation will also require all future plans of management for Kosciuszko National Park to recognise the cultural significance of the brumby. Other changes to be made to the

comprehensive trial and monitoring, which showed horse riding caused minimal impacts where it occurred. Final arrangements should be ready by December 2018 when the formal consultation process and amended plans of management are complete. “I thank the community for its patience during the trial which ran from April 2014 to April 2016, and am pleased the study found the environmental impacts of the horse riding – which has been carried out on set tracks for years – were minimal,” Mr Barilaro said. It is expected that in future planning they will look at all methods to limit brumby population increases including fertility control. In the meantime, there could be a pause on trapping and removal until the next stage of this plan is released. The National Parks and Wildlife are also trying to manage the huge numbers of deer, feral pigs, goats, foxes plus wild dogs and cats that populate the park and do untold damage between them.

The initial plan is to raise funds for plans, raise awareness to council and seek a government grant. It is expected that to expand on the park to a professional standard with significant difference would cost at least $1 million. YOGA seems to be gaining momentum every day, not only here in the Snowy Mountains but across life in general. We ask local yoga teacher Tess from Jindabyne Yoga Shala to offer an insight as to why yoga has become so popular. How does Yoga, something we do alone and mostly in silence, connect us to each other?
Yoga may be something we do on our own, but really the best classes are made because of the connection people share with each other within the room - the coming together of people of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ages and interests in the Jindabyne community to share the same experience. Science tells us that being in a healthy community is good for us. Even just being close to positive-minded people raises our vibrational frequency, and so sharing this mindset elevates our spirits. At any of the Yoga studios in town you will most likely find people catching up before or after class, sharing knowledge and experiences with each other. These small interactions create a community of people who really care for one and other and is one of the reasons why people continue to make that step through the door and practice Yoga regularly. So how does coming into a class help you as an individual? Yoga helps with maintaining optimal joint health, recovering from injuries, reducing stress and boosting your mood as well as increasing mental alertness and

Station music revival MUSIC lovers are in for a treat this winter with some of the biggest music artists in Australia playing at The Station Resort, Jindabyne. The venue had been renowned over the decades for hosting the biggest
with live music every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday nights. The good news does not stop there, with DJ’s playing Monday and Fridays and nightly entertainment. One of Australia’s most loved musicians, Byron Bay singer-songwriter Pete Murray has just released a new remix of his song Heartbeats. Murray will play at The Station on Saturday August 25 as part of his latest tour with a three piece acoustic and supported by exciting newcomer Matthew Armitage. Multi-ARIA Award winning Brisbane two-piece DZ Deathrays have come a long way from the first house party gig that they formed for. They are currently playing a virtual sold out Bloody Lovely tour of Australia and New Zealand and will perform on Saturday July 28 in what is sure to be a packed house at The Station. Sydney rockers The Preatures will kick of August proceedings on Saturday 4 as
music names, but in recent years had taken a different path. But that will change this season with a block buster entertainment list. Pete Murray, DZ Deathrays and The Preatures will headline this season along

part of their massive four-month, 40 gig Australian Magick tour. Snowy Mountains Magazine spoke to Pete Hastings from The Station Resort about the revival and attracting huge names back to the venue. “The Station is back in a big way with live entertainment seven nights a week and keep your eye out for major live concerts throughout July and August. I am super exited to be involved with the 2018 entertainment schedule and cannot wait to return The Station to the Snowies premier entertainment venue…stay tuned!” The Station will launch their entertainment season starting with a weeklong Brewski Festival from June 25 to July 1. The launch night on Monday 25 June is open to everyone and staff working in the region are invited with $6 Craft Beer all night, free live band and DJ’s plus giveaways and merchandise from all the breweries.

Crackenback - Jindabyne JINDABYNE has never had so many great restaurant choices, and this winter have two new venues with Ela Messa opening for Mediterranean cuisine in Gippsland St and a fresh starter for the snow season, Austrian Skihutte in the Kookaburra Lodge in Clyde St. No matter what your preference there is a cuisine or flavour to suit all palates from Mexican, Japanese, Italian, Asian, modern Australian cuisine, to more casual dining at cafes or restaurants and bars. Last month the Banjo Paterson Inn celebrated its first anniversary of the Overflow pizza and burger bar. The makeover prior to winter 2017 has been a huge hit with guests, and their pizzas have been a standout addition. The celebratory night was a great occasion with the ‘pizza slice lady’ proving popular for photos. The Banjo has been one of the busiest year round restaurants, with their downstairs Clancy’s Brasserie & Bar always a melting pot of people on any given night. The Clancy’s menu offers delicious choices of grilled chicken breast, slow cooked lamb shanks, whole baked trout, great tender steak cuts from the grill plus the Banjo is home to Kosciuszko pale ale direct from the downstairs brewery.
Upstairs in the Overflow Bar choose from the burger range of Banjo vego, crispy deep fired buttermilk chicken, cider and chipotle pork or pizzas. The spicy calabrese, margherita, Cajun chicken and their daily pizza specials all come highly recommended and can be take away or dine in the spacious Overflow Bar.
