The First Word WINTER is a great season here in the mountains, and we can’t wait for the snow to start falling and the resorts to open so we can be back on snow. In this Snow Holiday edition, we have given you plenty of tips and suggestions to help plan your snow holiday, plus some great Winter Olympic images from PyeongChang in South Korea. We hope you managed to watch some of the Olympic coverage, our athletes represented Australia proudly and as we go to print the Winter Paralympic athletes are only half way through their campaign. In our June and July editions we will have more stories and images from PyeongChang plus a host of other great snow information. It is hard to describe what the addiction to the snow is for people who have not visited. When I ask people what their key attraction is, it comes back to having
a fantastic time with your friends and family. Ask any parents what’s it like to ski with their kids and you will see an immediate smile on their face. And the beauty is you don’t have to be an expert, there is probably more fun at the beginner stage when you first see snow, throw a few snowballs and then start to slide around. That feeling of moving and then each day getting better and progressing to more locations on the mountain. That’s what it’s all about, just a great feeling to be in the snow and having so much fun. We hope you can experience that feeling when you visit this winter.

New Perisher chair for 2019 season PERISHER announced in December they will be replacing Leichhardt T- Bar with a new quad chairlift to be ready for the 2019 winter. The investment also includes a significant snowmaking project bringing the total cost to $4.2 million with the work planned for the 2018-2019 summer. By replacing Leichhardt T-bar and Home Rope Tow, the new quad chairlift will increase lifting capacity in the area by a huge 75%. The Leichhardt Terrain Park will also see quicker turnaround times from the chair, and the chair will offer a fast return from the Mt Perisher area back to Front Valley. “News of the new quad chairlift is very exciting as it services a favourite area for many of Perisher’s loyal guests, said Peter Brulisauer, Chief Operating Officer of Perisher. “The new lift will access fantastic beginner, intermediate and advanced runs as well as the famous Leichhardt Terrain Park providing something for every level of skier and snowboarder. “Replacing the Leichhardt T-Bar with a quad chairlift is a huge improvement. The area provides some of the best tree skiing in the resort and will be a favourite during the winter storms giving access to great powder skiing amongst the shelter of the tree lined terrain on Powder Ridge, said Andrew Kennedy, Mountain Manager of Perisher. The existing Leichhardt T-bar was primarily for advanced skiers and

The new chairlift will have the same conveyor load system as the Freedom Quad Chairlift in Guthega, making the loading process easy for all guests. Peter Brulisauer added: “The new snowmaking linking Happy Valley to the base of the new chairlift will provide Perisher skiers with another lift and run to enjoy under snowmaking only conditions and will ensure we can open terrain in this part of the resort earlier providing great conditions across the entire winter for our guests. This major investment at Perisher follows the installation of the Freedom Quad Chairlift in the Guthega area of the resort in 2014 and over $25 million in snowmaking improvements.

Kids’ snow holiday success By Gina Woodward Feeling a little daunted about taking a family holiday to the snow? With new skills waiting to be learned and mastered, new friends waiting to be made and a whole lot of family fun waiting to be had, now is the perfect time to start thinking about your next family snow holiday. Get started now with some top tips for taking your kids to the snow‌ Make the most of the great outdoors No matter where you go, there is no doubt that getting your family into the great outdoors and away from the PlayStation (or Xbox or
Nintendo or iPad or TV‌) is a good thing, but one of the best places to do just that is in the mountains. The air is fresh and you’ve got the stunning mountain views to top it off, so give your kids a break from their screen of choice and stimulate their minds and bodies with snow and mountain air. Take advantage of ski school Old enough to walk? Old enough to ski – or snowboard for that matter! Kids’ ski school has been designed to guide your kids’ learning in a fun and interactive way so they keep wanting to come back for more. With snowsports instructors full of energy and charisma, your kids will love every minute of these so-called “lessonsâ€? they get to take part in with other kids of the same age and ability. They’ll improve their skills and make some great new friends along the way. Go see the shows Ski resorts all over the world have lots of sources of entertainment for kids outside ski school. Younger kids will love the shows featuring their favourite mountain mascot they might have spotted on the slopes, giving them a chance to get up close and giving their parents a chance to grab a photo perfect for
â—† FUN: Your kids will love you even more for taking them on a snow holiday. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff the fridge door. Older kids will have a blast at the night time shows, featuring the coolest flips and tricks and maybe even fireworks. Dress warm for the snow We all know the weather is colder in the snow, but it is easy to stay warm with the right clothes. A good waterproof warm jacket and pants are ideal outer layers, but you should also invest in some thermal underwear for those chilly days. A fleece top will also keep their body warm, snow boots for walking in the snow and you will need a good beanie and spend a few extra dollars on gloves.
After a few snowball fights or a few falls in the snow in their lessons, kids’ hands spend more time in the snow than yours. Waterproof and warm are the key things with gloves. Goggles on a cold snowy day are also essential and sunglasses for sunny days, it is bright out there. There are many hire shops for skis, snowboards, boots plus jacket and pants, but you will need to supply the rest. No matter which part of your winter holiday your kids love the most, it’s something they’ll want to keep coming back for year after year. Plus when you all ski together you will see why it is the perfect family holiday.

Luxury in the snow WHAT does luxury mean to you? Is it getting away from your everyday and just having the luxury of stopping? Or is it fine dining, luxurious accommodation and heading to the spa? Whatever your preferred style, there are a number of ways to luxuriate in the Snowy Mountains this Winter. Stay in style… the overwater apartments or the chalet style houses at Lake Crackenback Resort offer beautiful views, fireplaces and room service. Drop everything and let someone else do it all for you. The Spa at Crackenback has a range of packages on offer, including Relax, Rejuvenate, Activate or Detox, so you can enjoy a few hours out for yourself and emerge refreshed and ready to relax again. Marritz Hotel or Perisher Valley Hotel. Renowned for its ski-in, ski-out location, the Perisher Valley Hotel is boutique luxury accommodation located in the heart of Perisher Valley only 100 metres from the Village Eight Express chairlift. Perisher has invested over $150,000 in upgrading the Perisher Valley Hotel for guest’s enjoyment including a new spa, updated furnishings and kitchen facility improvements in Snow Gums Restaurant. Over at Marritz you can sit back and watch the action from the cosy lounge areas, relaxing bar or the beautiful glassed pool area with views of the Front Valley slopes. Waking up each morning with views of the mountain as the glow of sunrise hits the slopes is a special treat at Marritz, as is the restaurant and service. For a pampering experience the Man From Snowy River Hotel has revamped the Eirawen day spa and wellness centre comprising five massage treatment rooms, a couples massage room, relaxation hot stone massage and full beauty service. At Thredbo, stay at The Peak apartments or Sequoia in the village, Rockpool at Woodridge or for direct access to the slopes, Ski In Ski Out apartments on the Supertrail. There are also some magnificent homes on offer to rent at Thredbo. With a range of mountain homes offering great views, cooking facilities (ok, somewhere to prep your wine and cheese), and fireplaces, it’s a great option for couples or groups of friends looking for a weekend of convenience, style and fun. The layout of this lovely village encourages people to wander in winter and enjoy the many small bars, galleries and restaurants dotted throughout the village. Looking for a fireside drink? Head to the Thredbo Alpine Hotel
◆ ULITMATE: This view is yours at the Marritz Hotel in Perisher. and enjoy a gluhwein or when events are on, enjoy fun and champagne at the Mumm Poolside Bar. Looking to be pampered head to toe? Then the Edelweiss Day Spa at The Denman Hotel is your home for a four hours of ‘Alpine Bliss’ including massage, facial, manicure and pedicure, or the ‘Mountain Harmony’ Organic Spa facial will see you looking your best for dinner out at one of the fine restaurants in the village. Choose from Black Bear Inn, Sante Churrasco, Terrace at the Denman, Candlelight Lodge or Cascades. If you’re skiing at Thredbo, dine out with a long lunch at Kareela Hutte up on the mountain and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Europe for the day, or take a scenic chairlift ride for a drink at Australia’s highest restaurant, Eagle’s Nest. It’s a wonderful way to appreciate nature’s contribution to your luxury holiday in the stunning Snowy Mountains. Looking for more views, enjoy a scenic
helicopter ride over the region to truly experience the vastness of the Australian Alps. HeliFun offers a Mt Kosciuszko Flight (30 mins) allowing you to take in wilderness areas and Australia’s highest mountain from the air. Speaking of food (again), lunch at Wild Brumby Distillery is also a quintessential element in a weekend away in the mountains. Unique surroundings and fine food, Austrian Style, combined with schnapps tastings and an extensive menu of great cocktails using their own gin, vodka, limoncello and more, mean that a private driver service from Snow Link shuttle would be best way to get home from a long lunch in the winter sun. Headed out to dinner? The cosy dining across the road at Crackenback Farm is also a wonderful way to enjoy the spoils of being on holiday. Book ahead in Winter for lunch and dinner at these venues as we’d hate for you to miss out on the experience.

Family Fun By Gina Woodward THANKFULLY the answer to that ongoing question from kids of ‘What are we doing next?’ is easy to answer when you stay at Lake Crackenback Resort. A playground of fun all year long, Lake Crackenback is a great base for families wanting to experience the snow whilst having the convenience of staying offmountain. Located super close to Skitube (a train through the mountains and the fastest way to get to Perisher resort) and only 20 minutes down the road from Thredbo Alpine Resort, guests have the option to choose which resort they’d like to ski, or both. Making a snow holiday easy is what Lake Crackenback excels at. Not only are there the range of activities and dining on offer, there are also all the services that you need including ski and board rental, clothing rental (snow boots, jackets, waterproof pants), toboggans, skis and boards. Just head for Harro’s Snowsports and everything will be sorted for you. Shuttle services to Perisher’s Skitube
make the transfer to the mountain one of complete ease and convenience. Lessons and lift tickets for the resorts can also be sorted at the hotel reception. The Activate Activities & Tours pass for guests (included in most packages) allows access to a 9 hole par 3 golf course, archery, tennis, fitness centre, heated indoor swimming pool, trampolines and a low ropes course. Rent a mountain bike and check out the pump and flow tracks or hit the 2.4km fitness track with instructions and equipment to use along the way. If there is any energy left after a day of skiing or snowboarding or snowplay and snowball fights, then there are clearly more ways than one to help use that up. Another fun family activity is to head out for a round of disc golf. Life can also be rather relaxing and indulgent at Lake Crackenback, with buffet breakfast included (that means no cooking!) in most packages at Cuisine restaurant overlooking the water. Dinner here is a real treat too with renowned chefs taking to the stage for various events across the Winter season. A family dinner at Alpine Larder is also a great option with

WANT to take a trip to the snow but just can’t get past the perception that it’s too expensive? Don’t throw the idea in the bin just yet – there are many ways you can save money and hit the slopes for less. Take the coach or carpool with mates When you drive yourself to the snow, you have to worry about the cost of petrol and National Park entry, not to mention purchasing or hiring chains if you don’t already own some. Save money and stress less by jumping on a coach and let someone else do the driving and chain fitting. If you want your own space, and enjoy the comfort of your own vehicle, get together with your snow buddies to share a car, the driving and the costs. BUY YOUR LIFT PASSES EARLY Every ski resort in Australia offers a discount for being organised and buying
your lift passes in advance. Do your research into the different ticket options available before the snow starts to fall and make your winter holiday all that more affordable by getting organised early. Some ski resorts offer flexible lift passes that allow you to pick and choose the days you want to ski or ride – so if you want, you can wait for the snow and the weather gods to dictate your plans. BUNDLE YOUR LIFT PASSES WITH GEAR HIRE AND LESSONS If you don’t own your own equipment and want to hone your skills with lessons when you’re on the mountain, your best bet is to hire your gear and pay for your lessons in a bundle with your advance purchase lift passes. Get it all sorted up front, at the same time, and save in the long run. STAY IN A LODGE Staying in a ski-in/ski-out luxury chalet will probably cut into your savings. But what about an on-mountain club lodge? All you need is a warm place to sleep at night and club lodges can actually be the most fun way to enjoy a winter break as you enjoy meal times with other lodgies and chat about the best spots to get fresh tracks. Or stay
off-mountain, head to Jindabyne, Cooma or Berridale, check out travel websites and get onto the local facebook pages too. BRING YOUR OWN FOOD Eating out can be expensive no matter where you are. Save your dollars by bringing some food with you and eat in – Aussie staples go a long way for a day on the slopes: Vegemite on toast and porridge for breakfast sounds pretty good and you’ll find some ski lodges will have your milk and butter sorted for you. Pack your lunch and bring a water bottle – which also saves time for more skiing! PICK YOUR TIMING It’s much cheaper to ski during shoulder season than it is during peak season. Avoid the crowds and queues of July school

holidays and August and get your snow fix early in June. There may be limited terrain open but with snowmaking investments across the resorts, it’s only getting more reliable each year. Or, increase your chances of bluebird skies and warmer weather by waiting for some fun spring skiing in September. It’s often the best time to get your snow fix; the sun is shining, the skiing and snowboarding is cheaper and it’s also a lot of fun with less people on the mountain and happy sun-loving crowds in the bar for après beer and schnapps!
10 reasons for a snow holiday 8. Hot tubs and open fires Being in the snow is romantic. Soak your ski-boot feet and soothe your weary muscles in a hot jacuzzi, then cuddle up in front of an open fire with a glass of mulled wine. Perfect. ◆ FRIENDLY: Take a ski lesson at Thredbo, improve your skiing and meet new friends. PHOTO: Courtesy of Thredbo Resort. ◆ SCENERY: Skiing at Perisher with the best views of the Australian Alps. PHOTO: Courtesy of Perisher Resort. By Gina Woodward Thinking about booking a snow holiday, and the magical allure of white fluffy snowflakes alone hasn’t been enough to make you do it? Here are ten reasons why you simply can’t wait another winter without going to the snow. 1. It’s fun
you’ll have a new skill to add to your repertoire; to talk about with friends and dream about as winter approaches each year. Better yet – you’ll be able to make educated comments from your couch about the Winter Olympics. 3. It’s a great way to reconnect with loved ones
Even if you’re still learning how to ski or snowboard and falling over a lot, you’ll be laughing and having fun with other people doing the exact same thing. Once you experience the exhilaration of zipping down a snowy mountain, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t tried this whole snowsports thing a whole lot sooner.
With the quaint atmosphere of a ski village surrounding you, beautiful scenery to wake up to and the thrill of trying something new to look forward to, it’s the perfect opportunity to rekindle and reconnect. Plus – the whole family can do it so put the kids in ski school and revel in the joy on their rosy-cheeked faces.
2. You’ll learn something new
4. You’ll make new friends
Not only will you be able to tell all your friends about the cute snowsports instructor you spent the weekend with,
There’s no better place to strike up a friendly conversation with a stranger than on the chairlift. Nowhere else is it
ok to yell ‘Single’ at the top of your voice and look around to see who answers in the affirmative. You could make a lifelong friend who you’ll meet in fabulous locations around the world for snow holidays. Aspen, anyone? 5. The scenery and fresh mountain air Busy, noise-polluted-traffic-everywhere, city? Or serene, white-capped mountains, with cool, minty-fresh air filling your lungs? The choice is yours. Breathe and take it all in. 6. The coffee/hot chocolate/wine breaks What if the fast-paced, adrenaline junkie snowsports lifestyle is just not your thing? That’s ok. Watch your friends, family and fearless children hurl themselves down a mountain while you take lots and lots of rest stops for coffee and hot chocolate. Call it a day after lunch and settle in with a glass of wine and a good book. 7. Après ski One word. Schnapps.

9. Snow fashion Where else can you get away with wearing faux fur and your favourite daggy Christmas jumper that only comes out from the bottom of the drawer for fancy-dress parties? Not to mention moon boots, beanies, mittens and thermal underwear! 10. Bragging rights If your work colleagues haven’t already seen all of your Insta-worthy posts by the time you get in to work, is there a better response to that Monday morning office kitchen question: “What did you do this weekend?” than: “I spent a few days in the mountains, frolicking in the snow, breathing in the fresh air, doing a bit of skiing, relaxing in a hot tub and drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows. You?”

PERISHER
When bigger is best PERISHER is Australia’s favourite resort and it is easy to see why. Not only is it the biggest resort in Australia, but also the Southern Hemisphere, so you know you have an abundance of variety and never become bored skiing the same runs each day. The four resort areas really do offer so many different options plus are suited to not only the advanced and intermediate
snow enthusiast, but cater to the humble beginner who once they have finished a few inspiring lessons will soon be off on their own Perisher adventures. Everyone has their favourite runs or locations, from the cruising terrain on Eyre T-bar to the runs on Towers where you can show your prowess underneath the chairs. Then make the journey all the way to Guthega and realise you have only seen
a portion of the resort yet spent most of the day skiing. Blue Cow on a sunny day surely has to be the pick, and the scenic views are by far the best in Australia, wouldn’t you agree. The Ridge Chair for a long leg burner, plus First Tracks on Sunday mornings is sensational. When the weather changes and the snow is dumping, remember it is always good here if you know your way around a trail map. The Summit Chair and the steeper Zalis run offers a challenge for those still working their way up the intermediate ladder, or lower advanced, and one day you will want to sneak past the trees onto the black run of Kamikaze. By now you realise there is a lot to choose from, 47 lifts in fact, and a challenge in itself to ski every lift in a single day. Yes, it can be done, and it does not really matter where you start, just plan a route and you will find places you may never have seen before. Plus ride a ski carpet you may have long forgotten even existed, but all part of the fun. The Freedom chair at Guthega is one of the most popular, and a selfie at the top with that view. Well, that is the best present you can share with your friends, especially if they are not at Perisher. Jealousy hurts more on those sunny blue bird days!

Smiggin Holes is perfect for those just finding their legs, and the exploring off the Kaaten Triple Chair is ideal for the lower intermediates. When you say 1245 hectares it may not seem much at the beginning of your week, but once you start to tick off the 100 groomed runs one by one, you will soon see why you should have done a few extra leg lunges in April and May. But don’t despair, if you want to finish early there is ample bars and restaurants that can appease your weary legs. Or you may want to return to your lodge for an early massage, one of the benefits of staying on snow now becomes apparent when you think afternoon spa and massage….. There are a host of other great on-snow activities to enjoy at Perisher including: Night Skiing and fireworks, seven world-class terrain parks, over 100km of marked cross-country trails, magnificent mountain views, cafes, bars, retail stores, fine dining and a great nightlife. Plus with the EPIC Australia Pass one of the best valued passes in the world, including access to the best overseas resorts, you had better start planning your snow holiday now. Historic dinner PERISHER Historical Society will host their annual dinner at the Marritz Hotel in Perisher on Sunday June 10 of the opening long weekend. This year’s speakers will be the son and daughters of Johnny Abbottsmith who was one of the true pioneers of the snow industry. Few people achieve the status of ‘Legend’ in the minds of the community but Johnny Abbottsmith was such a person. Johnny’s extraordinary life provided the skills and hard-won experience needed to ensure that he became a person of significance in the Perisher Range, in Antarctica, and with the army training troops in winter tactics and skiing during World War II. Johnny built the first Perisher-Smiggins ski lift which commenced in August 1952, bred and ran dog sleds for transport and even had a glacier named after him by Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson. This life will be revealed by son Garry Abbottsmith, daughters Faye Pendergast and Diane Hampshire in conversation with highly respected author Peter Southwell-Keely. This ever-popular annual event is now

New book release THE book titled “A History of the Early Development of Perisher - Smiggins” has been re-published by the Perisher Historical Society which looks into the early days of Perisher and Smiggin Holes by author John Davis. Davis who provided the first commercial accommodation in Perisher at “The Tow Hut” offers a ripping read with a fascinating firsthand account of the development, characters and events of this era. The book is a personal account of the growth of skiing in the area by John Davis, who with his wife Pat lived and worked in Perisher and Smiggin Holes from 1957 to 1968. During this time, he saw Perisher grow from a tiny resort with eleven lodges and two lifts to a flourishing ski village with three hotels, several commercial lodges and a large number of club lodges, all served by fifteen ski lifts – T-bars, Pomas and the Chairlift on Mt Perisher. Meanwhile, after years of being just ‘the end of the road’ in winter, Smiggin Holes had become a resort as well. John devotes separate chapters to the
ski schools, the ski lifts and to oversnow transport. He also draws vivid pictures of several fascinating characters who worked in the snowfields and shares some amusing anecdotes. The 168-page book is full of wonderful memories for those that were participants, has 65 photographs and is a firsthand view of the area’s history written with a great turn of phrase by a much loved icon of the area. The $50.00 book is a must have for the libraries of skiers and ski clubs and is available at the Snowy Region Visitors Centre in Jindabyne and Larry Adler Outdoor and Ski.

Your new winter job ASK anyone you know who has worked a snow season what it is like, and you are sure to receive the same common theme answer, only in different forms. Brilliant, unreal, so much fun, can’t wait to do it again, wow do you remember that powder day, and the list goes on. Perisher Range Lease still not settled DURING the summer Charlotte Pass Village Pty Ltd negotiated a new 40 year head lease with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). Under the head lease Charlotte Pass Village Pty Ltd has committed to a capital investment and summer activation program at Charlotte Pass. The new lease all stems from a review in 2016 by NPWS of the management arrangements for the Perisher Range and Charlotte Pass Resorts (the resorts). The Perisher Range Resorts include the areas of Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes, Guthega and Blue Cow. The expression of interest responses was evaluated for Perisher Range in 2017 and on the advice of the tender panel, the NSW Government has not offered a head lease to any proponent for Perisher Range. At this stage there has been no comment from either Perisher or NPWS on any further news of the head lease for the Perisher Range. The review for Perisher was no change, but it’s understood NPWS continue to discuss with key stakeholders. Currently, NPWS is responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the Perisher Range Resorts. This includes lease
management of the club and commercial lodges, as well as providing utility services such as collection and disposal of waste, and infrastructure such as sewerage. NPWS said they had a vision to create a world class tourism destination. It is well known that the Perisher Range is in drastic need of more beds in Perisher Valley region to suit the demand of snow enthusiasts. This would require more infrastructure in terms of retail and services. Perisher are only responsible for lifts at this given time, but it is understood that they did tender for the head lease and are interested. In simple terms NPWS have stated they were not interested in the ongoing management of Perisher Range and Perisher Resort, owned by Vail Resorts would be the best people to operate the head lease. Perisher have the support of the Chamber of Commerce who deal with commercial lodges and S.L.O.P.E.S who look after the 88 club lodges. The head lease model is what Thredbo currently have, where the lift company also run all aspects of the village and are landlord for all lodges.
Hosted on snow accommodation and well known ski-in restaurant. Ski to the Blue Calf t-bar which links Guthega to the entire Perisher network.
We have ten smart, light, comfortable rooms for couples, families and groups, some with dynamic main range views. All have en-suites and are serviced daily. Overnight parking available.

◆ DESTINATION: All roads eventually lead you to the snowfields of Thredbo and Perisher. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff
A well-travelled route to the mountain EACH winter thousands of enthusiastic snow revellers make the journey to the snowfields. From downtown Sydney it is usually a five plus hour drive and even for the experienced driver it is still a fair distance. Weekend visitors spend most of Friday night on the road and the same return trip later on Sunday afternoon. Weekly arrivals are usually on a Sunday, so most of travel there is during daylight hours. But how has this trip changed over the years? Where did you stop ten years ago compared to where you stop now? The roads have changed in this time and you will notice more changes this year, but not until you leave Cooma. The Kosciuszko
Road has been undergoing works throughout the summer. Overtaking lanes between Cooma and Berridale, and finally a widening to two lanes leaving Jindabyne to the Alpine Way turnoff. It is hoped this is finished prior to winter, but they did have an extended time period forecast. The new road through Canberra has slightly changed where it is convenient to stop. Do Sydneysiders take the choices at Goulburn and then go straight through to the mountains or do you exit before Fyshwick at the new Ikea exit. The Swedish meatballs after all are an Ikea specialty. These important dilemmas change even more the closer you get to the snow.
Bredbo have a great café, Snowy Mountains Gourmet Café that people might pass but shouldn’t and the Bredbo Pizza is a nightly haunt for many. Then you reach Cooma. More people should stop in Cooma, as they have a great selection of cafes and eateries from Subway, PD Murphys, The Lott or Kumas Pies to name a few, so don’t always take the big yellow M option. Once you hit Berridale you are in store for an expansion of Whisk and Cocoa café or the bakery, all adjacent to the petrol station. Whisk and Cocoa has been a hit during the summer and the coffee is top rate. By now you have reached Jindabyne and you are either at your accommodation or a
short drive to the snowfields. So how was your journey, hopefully enjoyable but you made it, and really did it matter if you were five or ten minutes later, or half an hour later. On the busy days and weekends there is no real rush, as the snow will still be there, and your accommodation will not move. So take the time to stop and enjoy the journey with some great food options along the way. If you need a change of scenery, for an alternative you can always fly with Regional Express who have daily flights to Snowy Mountains Airport in Cooma. Then your five hours plus road trip could be a one hour flight plus some transfer time.

First visit to the snow By Gina Woodward AS a seasoned skier, it’s all too easy to forget what the first time on snow is really all about. It’s a distant memory that only comes up when we introduce a friend to our favourite sport, be it skiing or snowboarding. So how best to prepare your friends or yourself (welcome first-time snow visitor!) for that introduction to snow, an addiction that’s certain to become lifelong and memory making. Years ago a friend was visiting me for her first trip to the snow. In the morning, she came out in her underwear to the loungeroom and said, ‘OK, where do I start?’. At that moment, I realised how second nature it was to even be getting dressed in the right layers to ski for the day. So here are some well-learned tips: Layers. It’s all about layers. Wool or a bamboo/wool mix is awesome. Thermals are a handy thing to own so invest in a nice pair to ensure you are warm and comfortable all-day long. Layers allow you to add and remove easily to keep your temperature at the right level. Smart move snowgoer. Socks. One pair please. Don’t wear two – it
won’t keep you warmer and you’ll increase your chance of blisters as the layers of fabric rub and wrinkle. Wear long socks, not short ones and definitely not cotton. That’s the fast ticket to cold feet – cold sweaty feet that won’t dry out. Waterproof gear. Snow can be wet and kids love to sit and play in it. So make sure everyone is wearing waterproof pants, jacket and boots. You can hire all these things from most ski shops too. Gloves. Kids love to play in snow, so they definitely need these, whether you are skiing or not. Try making your first snowball without gloves and you’ll lose the magic and the fun of it very fast. Mittens keep your hands warmer so if you’re a cold frog these are a great idea. Eyes. The light is bright and the sun reflection off the snow can burn your eyes. Make sure everyone in the family is wearing some form of eye protection. At a minimum wear sunglasses and, if you can, do wear goggles as they not only protect your eyes from the sun but they stop your eyes from drying out. Sore eyes are not a good souvenir from a ski holiday. Lunch. Eating on the hill can be expensive so if you are on a tight budget, bring your
own snacks. Bring lunch too and have a snow picnic for something different. Otherwise choose a great on-mountain restaurant and make the dining a key part of your visit to the snow. So many beautiful things to eat with local produce on show at many restaurants‌ and what’s a snow trip without Schnapps! Water. You will get dehydrated in this environment, so drinking through the day is paramount. Bring a water bottle that fits into your pocket, hunt down water fountains or head to the cafÊ to ensure you stay hydrated. Driving. Talk to the experts and ensure your car is ready for the snow. Have you rented chains? Do you have anti-freeze in the radiator? Are you using alpine diesel or an additive? Got gloves and a tarp in the car in case you must put chains on? Parking up in the snow – got a shovel in case you need to dig the car out? Sure, there are loads of things to think about, however, a snow holiday is a truly memorable one – be it your first snowball fight, your first snow angel or building your first snowman. It will be full of firsts and most certainly full of fun. Just ask the experts or talk to your snow loving friends, they’ll help you make sure you’re ready to go, to the snow.
◆ HAPYY: Being prepared for the snow will bring a smile to everyone’s face.

DA for new Thredbo Gondola WHILE there has been no official statement from Thredbo Resort, they have submitted a Development Application (DA) and a Statement of Environmental Effects (SEE) by Jindabyne’s Dabyne Planning Pty Ltd to construct a new $10 million gondola in place of the old Merritts Chair. The chair is the oldest lift in Thredbo and runs from the Valley Terminal area over the Schuss run up to the Merritts area. It links with the Cruiser Chair and intermediate
terrain in this area. Should the application be successful, this would be a huge boost to Thredbo guests. The slow Merritts Chair would change from a slow 20 minute trip for 520 people per hour, to a six minute ride for 2000 people per hour, an increase of 384%. Noted in the Statement of Environmental Effects, “The DA is for the replacement of the current Merritts double chairlift with a new detachable gondola lift plus associated works. “The Merritts double chairlift was

Australian Medal Trifecta By Steve Cuff AUSTRALIA continued to add to their overall Winter Olympic medal tally with a trifecta of medals at the PyeongChang 2018 games in South Korea. Starting with Matt Graham winning a silver medal in the men’s moguls, Australia celebrated a whirlwind three days at the Phoenix Park venue with snowboarders Scotty James and Jarryd Hughes adding to the medal count. Matt Graham started his second Olympic campaign strongly but lacked some of the finesse if he was to grace the podium. The steep difficult course was challenging for most of the skiers in training, except for the Canadian gold medal winner, Mikael Kingsbury, who skied brilliantly from the outset. Graham qualified in 9th position with a score of 77.28, but with gradual improvement each day there was every hope he could deliver when required. He upped the ante in his skiing to reach the super final, where the top six best skiers would ski for podium glory. When he crossed
◆ Scotty James would capture a bronze medal in snowboard halfpipe.
the line fist pumping he knew he had just skied the run of his life posting a score of 82.57. He would have to wait for three more skiers before he realised his dream of winning a Winter Olympic silver medal. Kingsbury easily won gold with 86.63 and Japan’s Daichi Hara won bronze with 82.19. “I’m over the moon, it still hasn’t sunk in but I can’t wait to celebrate. It was amazing putting down that final run which was my best run of the night. I knew when I saw the score I was going to be on the podium,” said Graham. “I came out today and, actually the first training session before the qualification session didn’t exactly go as I would’ve liked, maybe I just felt a little bit stiff and then went inside, took a breather and came out firing. I was just having fun and when I’m having fun I’m skiing the best.” Australian flag bearer and triple Olympian Scotty James was always expected to podium in the men’s halfpipe, it was more what colour medal and how tough the battle would be with arch rivals Shaun White and Japan’s Ayumu Hirano. The three riders have dominated the sport setting up what people were describing as the greatest snowboard event in history. James set a high qualifying score of 96.75 only to be edged out by White with 98.50 and Hirano in third position with 95.25. Australian Kent Callister also squeezed into the final in 12th position and would eventually finish 10th. The scene was set for the highly anticipated final and Hirano set the early pace with a 95.25 in his second run. Riders have three runs to better their score and James had already set a 92.00 and would need to stomp it all in his final run to win. James was looking good until he went down on a frontside 1080 leaving him a guaranteed bronze. In an exciting finish White would nail his last run scoring 97.75, earn his third gold medal in four Olympics and add to his

I’ve had a crazy couple of seasons standing on a lot of podiums but this one is very sentimental, and I get to fly the Australian flag as high as I can.” Australia had four competitors in the snowboard cross event and all had legitimate claims for podium success, but when the snow spray settled from a drama and actionpacked day, dual Olympian Jarryd Hughes would stand proud on the podium to receive his silver medal.
All Aussie riders looked good in qualification, but it would be tough to progress through each heat and the pressure was on. Adam Lambert was eliminated early, but Cam Bolton, Alex Pullin and Hughes all looked fast and kept progressing through the rounds. It was exciting times for Australia as all three riders eventually made the same semi finals. Bolton would end up crashing and injuring his shoulder, but he returned for the small final and finished 10th. In the final Pullin would crash from a big air onto a flat landing and finish 6th. Hughes would battle it out with Olympic defending champion, Frenchman Pierre Vaultier and capture his silver medal and was ecstatic as he crossed the line. Hughes who has had five knee operations thanked his family and support crew and added, “I’ve been very fortunate to work with a lot of great people around the Olympics and the last few days I’ve been sitting there chatting with Alyce Burnett who’s a kayaking Olympian and we’ve been able to chat about stuff and just kind of get my mind off it and not be too focussed so it’s been really cool.” Hughes capped off a great games by attending most events to support other athletes and was chosen to carry the flag in the closing ceremony.

◆ Britt Cox looks at the scoreboard in the final and would finish fifth. AUSTRALIA let medal chances slip through their grasp in PyeongChang, and while the athletes put up a brave face immediately after their events, they may well look back and think what if…..! Mogul skier Britt Cox had a stellar year in 2016-17 winning a World Championship gold medal and a string of World Cup victories and went into her third Olympic games in PyeongChang as a real medal contender. Skiing second last in the super final, Cox new what she needed to score to claim a
medal and pushed accordingly from the start. A poor landing on the top air and some untidy turns through the middle of the course sealed her fate and she would be relegated into fifth position. “I went for it and pushed it a little too hard in the super final there and was scrappy and the girls that were on the podium and Jakara’s performance, they are very well deserving of their results,” Cox told the Seven network. A surprise in the ladies’ moguls was Jakara Anthony who was not expected to reach the super final. Skiing in her first Winter Olympics and previously with only one podium to her name, Anthony showed good poise to finish fourth. Ladies aerial skier Laura Peel finished fifth in the Olympic final on a tricky night where winds played havoc with the field. Having been juggling her starting mark on previous jumps to allow for the changing wind, Peel had a podium in sight if she could land her final jump, but back slammed on the landing in a cruel blow to the likeable Canberran. “I left it all out there and secured a top five finish which is still pretty cool. I’m definitely happy I made the super final, I would have liked to put down the best jump but unfortunately I couldn’t,” Peel
◆ Sami Kennedy-Sim celebrates on reaching the semi finals, she would finish eighth. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff ◆ Laura Peel gestures to the camera on her fifth placing told the Canberra Times. The snowboard cross and skier cross course certainly took its toll on athletes, with numerous crashes and injuries. It was also harsh on Australian athletes with Alex Pullin reaching the final but crashing and eventually finishing sixth. We won a silver medal with Jarryd Hughes, but Pullin was in good form in every heat leading into the final and would have considered himself a big chance in the start gate of the final. Ladies skier cross athlete Sami Kennedy-
Sim was in career best form at PyeongChang and showed speed in qualifying and early heats. When Kennedy-Sim reached the semifinals there was great hope in the Aussie camp of a final berth, and with her form during the day it could have been anything. But a mishap at the start gate in the semifinals finished her podium chances and she would eventually finish eighth. “I snapped my pole strap in the start and got caught on the gate, it’s not much you can do about it but I gave it a good crack trying to fight back and for about 10 seconds there I thought I was going to get them,” said Kennedy-Sim.

Czech mate upset By Steve Cuff FROM pre-games training to closing ceremony, there was so much going each day at PyeongChang it was hard to keep up. With 2900 athletes all vying for medal glory across 15 disciplines and multiple venues, there was sure to be heartaches and exhilaration on the Olympic journey. Without doubt the upset story of the games was Ester Ledecka from the Czech Republic winning the ladies Super G ski race. This may not sound like a monumental victory, but when you consider Ledecka’s prime event was snowboard parallel slalom, it surely was a complete surprise to even herself. Starting from bib number 26 and with the majority of pundits having already written their finishing scripts, Ledecka caused a huge upset. Defending Olympic champion Anna Veith from Austria was virtually preparing her acceptance speech after the top 25 racers had finished when the crowd roared as Ledecka crossed the line to win by the smallest of margins, one hundredth of a second faster. Ledecka was in disbelief and seemed
stunned for a moment, as her best previous finish in Super G was 19th. The result also bumped Swiss skier Lara Gut off the podium and Tina Weirather to bronze. It was expected USA’s Lyndsey Vonn would contend for the title, but she finished in sixth place with Australia’s Greta Small from bib 35 placing 31st. All eyes now turned to Ledecka’s next outing in the women’s snowboard parallel slalom six days later, where she did not disappoint the fairy-tale ending. She was too fast for Germany’s Selina Joerg and claimed her second gold medal at the Winter Olympics in two different disciplines. Ledekca told the Ney York Times after the snowboarding, “I was dreaming about this moment since I was a little child. A lot of people were telling me that it is not possible to do both sports and to be on a high level in both sports and today I proved it is possible.” Norway won the overall medal count with 39 medals while Germany were one of the big improvers on the medal count jumping up into second on the table with a total of 31 medals. This was a dramatic increase from Sochi 2014 where they

◆ Big Air snowboarder Jess Rich had to endure several physical tests before she could compete. The 27 year old would narrowly miss out on the final finishing 13th.
◆ Competing in his third Olympics even though still young at 23 years of age, Scotty James had the honour of being the Australian flag bearer at the opening ceremony in PyeongChang.

◆ Belle Brockhoff was on the comeback from injury and performed gallantly to reach the semi-finals and eventually finished 11th in Snowboard Cross.

Olympic Greats COMPETING at the highest level at the Winter Olympics brings out the best in champions and creates history. Being a part of this history is something that lives with an athlete forever. Here is a snapshot into some history that was written at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic games. Australia’s Lydia Lassila bowed out of Olympic competition in South Korea, the fifth time she has competed at a Winter Olympic games in aerial skiing. Lassila has had an outstanding career, not only at Olympic level but for all her victories on the World Cup circuit, and of course highlighted by a gold medal at Vancouver 2010 and a bronze medal at Sochi 2014. Lassila finished 14th in her last outing and a rare occasion of not making the final. She will always be remembered for her success over two decades and her determination to come back from injury and reach the pinnacle of her sport time and again. “I really wanted to be in the final tonight and really should have been in the final but that is the nature of the beast,” said the inspirational mother-of-two. For me my story is over and that’s ok, I’m alright with that.” Shaun White is a legend in snowboarding and capped of his fourth Winter Olympics with his third gold medal, not a bad achievement for a guy who was once labelled the flying tomato for his shaggy red hair. The multi-millionaire performed to his full capacity when it was required and as always put on a great show for the cameras. He has taken the sport of halfpipe snowboarding to another level as far as exposure goes, and along the way won a
truck load of medals and accolades. He will go down as one of the great snow sportsman of all time. Lindsey Vonn has been a shining light for the sport of skiing and competed in her last Winter Olympics. She may not have won her preferred colour of medal, but you can’t deny the fact she will always be one of the greatest skiers of all time. Vonn has won an amazing 80 World Cup races and in her five Winter Olympic games, won the ladies’ downhill in Vancouver 2010, a third place in Super G in 2010 and won a bronze medal in the PyeongChang downhill event. Norwegian cross country skier Marit Bjoergen made history on the final day of the games when she won her 13th Winter Olympic medal, equalling fellow countrymen Ole Einar Bjoerndalen. Bjoergen who competed in five Winter Olympics from the 2002 Salt Lake City games, where she captured her first silver medal, won a staggering five medals alone in PyeongChang, including two gold. In Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 she showed her class winning three gold medals at each games.

ONE of the true original legends of the snow industry, Warren Miller, passed away earlier this year with glowing tributes flowing from across the world. The 93 year old Miller who was renowned for his ski movies, a passion he began in 1946, was also instrumental for introducing millions of people to skiing via his movies and narration. As much as he recruited some of the best skiers of their time, and later years snowboarders, it was his simple deadpan narration that really embraced his followers. His history is well documented, starting out in 1946 from Sun Valley Idaho with an eight-millimetre movie camera, and for over four decades he would scour the globe for unfound ski locations. Each year his movies would signal the start of the snow season. With a mix of high end action and bloopers of people falling off ski lifts, Warren would have the audience both on the edge of their seat with anticipation, plus uncontrollable laughter. “Looking back on what set my films apart,” he recalled in his autobiography, “Freedom Found” (2016), “it was the emphasis on entertaining people, which means making them laugh.” Miller worked as a ski instructor in the early days of Sun Valley and lived out a car park in the back of his camper trailer. It is perhaps this folklore that led him to be the icon he is, and to also create the true ski bum, a path chosen by many who would have watched his films and follow in his skiing footsteps. Miller was famous for his many quotes, and always encouraged people to ski and head to the mountains. He would also plant the seed for a generation of film makers who followed in the snow industry. “Warren Miller is the man who made the snowball that created the whole industry,” Dirk Collins, a founder of the adventure sports production company Teton Gravity Research, told Outside magazine for a 2004 profile of Miller. He produced over 500 feature films and became loved by the snow world he lived for. Miller continued to head Warren Miller Entertainment until the late 1980s when he sold the company to his son, Kurt Miller. Kurt later sold the company to Time, Inc., which sold it in 2007 to Bonnier Corporation, which was itself acquired by Active Interest Media in 2013. While transitioning out of his executive role, Miller still maintained his creative role as director and narrator for the films into the 1990s, but Miller had distanced

Koreans on fire By Steve Cuff THERE is only one thing better than Korean BBQ when in PyeongChang, and that was a night at the short track skating when the Koreans are winning and who are treated like gods. It was the perfect night to witness their enthusiasm for the sport, several Korean skaters would be racing in heats and the women’s 3000m relay final would cap off the night’s proceedings. Without knowing who was racing, when the crowd roared you knew a Korean had either just started a move or had taken the lead. The action was just as hot as the tasty BBQ meats

of our favourite Phoenix Park restaurant, aptly named Korean BBQ. Short track can be an unforgiving sport and each race is on a knife-edge, just like the razor sharp narrow blades of the skates. The Koreans are renowned for their precise speed while holding the edge in the turn, and here is where you need to be at your best to keep in front. Australia has two racers tonight, Andy Jung in the 500m heats and Deanna Lockett in the ladies 1000m heats. Jung would have a forgettable evening after crashing into the side during warmup and again in his heat when he attempted to take the lead. Lockett skated well and hit the front mid race around the outside and looked to be holding the position before she eased back into third position unable to fight her way forward. As each Korean skater wins the crowd become louder reaching a crescendo in the women’s relay final. The race has many swings and lead changes and the Koreans are behind most of the race. Just when you think they may be out of contention they rally, and the crowd support

Paralympic Medals AUSTRALIA started the first week of Winter Paralympic competition in PyeongChang in sensational form, with Simon Patmore winning gold and Melissa Perrine capturing two bronze medals. Competing in snowboard cross, Patmore showed he is the best in his discipline with a historic display. The 30-year-old won Australia’s first gold medal at a Winter Paralympics since Michael Milton and Bart Bunting won at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. Gliding down the Jeongseon Alpine Centre snowboard cross course Patmore also became the first man in Australian sporting history to win a medal at both the Summer and Winter Games. Patmore claimed bronze in the 200m T46 final at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. “When you guys say first gold for a while and first male athlete for Summer and Winter, I’m really proud, Patmore said. “I really want to show everyone that it can be done and all you have to do is put in the effort and put in the time and trust the process. There waiting for him was his two Australian snowboard teammates Sean Pollard (9th in the same disability class as Patmore) and Ben Tudhope (10th in his lower limb disability
class). They broke through security guards and raced out onto the snow for an impromptu celebration with Patmore. Pollard and Tudhope jumped all over him as he let the tears of joy flow. “In the quarter-finals, semis and through to the final I was just holding back the tears and the emotions, Patmore said. “Man my goggles fogged up as soon as I crossed the line. I had to collapse on the ground or I would have run straight into everyone. Melissa Perrine produced some great skiing in the vision impaired class with her sighted guide Christian Geiger to win two Paralympic bronze in two days. Competing in the alpine combined, the Perrine-Geiger team stormed home in the second slalom leg to win bronze after being placed sixth after the Super G component. “That’s an understatement, Perrine said, when asked to describe her emotions after waiting so long for Paralympic success. “Relief, I guess. Elation. Just so happy right now. I’m stoked that it was enough to get on the podium and I’m so excited for the next two races, she said after the first medal. competing in her third Winter Paralympic games then landed the bronze in the giant slalom the following day. After winning the second medal, Perrine the woman who has won 35 World Cup medals and eight World Championships medals over the past eight years said, “I love this sport, it’s an amazing sport. I wanted to relax and have a lot of fun out there today and I managed to do that. In a sad note for the team, flag bearer and co-captain Joany Badenhorst injured her knee in a crash during official training and was ruled out of the games. Warren Miller – Line of Descent SINCE 1949, ski families have cheered the official kick-off to winter with the annual Warren Miller ski film. Line of Descent will premiere in Sydney on May 16th, 2018, at the Hayden Orpheum. Screenings will then sweep across Australia, from New South Wales to Melbourne’s Jam Factory starting May 23, Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia and South Australia from May to July. Line of Descent celebrates just that, the lineage of legendary athletes through a multi-generational cast of skiing’s icons and fresh faces. Ride along on a stunning cinematic journey as they travel near and far, descending some of North America’s deepest lines in Jackson Hole, Montana, Silverton, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows and Steamboat. Athletes employ nearly all possible means to chase winter destinations along the Beartooth Pass, the French Alps, New Zealand, British Columbia, and Norway. Athletes include Tommy Moe, Jonny Moseley, JT Holmes, Lexi duPont, Seth

Being car ready for cold weather chains at all times. If roads are snowy or icy, Police can refuse entry to those who cannot fit chains. You never want to lie on the dirty road to fit chains, so carrying a plastic ground sheet is perfect to keep you clean. When you look at this main picture you would wonder how this owner could move that car without first digging out snow. So, carrying a compact shovel is a great idea during winter in case you need to use it. Even a small slide to the edge of the road may require some shovel action to extricate you. Should there be an accident or extended traffic jam you would want to stay warm and keep the engine running. Having a full tank of fuel plus have some warm clothes, snacks and water is a good idea.
EACH winter many drivers come unstuck in the snow through lack of preparation. Here are some great tips to prepare your car for winter and to help ensure your trip is safer. Weather When you visit the mountains, the weather can be extremely variable. From sunny days to blizzards, temperatures can fluctuate from between plus 15 degrees down to below minus 15 degrees all within a quick period. Mixed in with these temperatures are snowy days where roads are covered in snow, and clear days where there could possibly be ice on the road even though no snow has fallen. Being aware of the conditions is paramount to avoid any nasty accidents in winter. Listen to radio road reports and read daily weather forecasts to assist you and know in advance what conditions to expect.
Speed and Stupidity
Preparation Just like you put on an extra layer when it is cold, your car needs to be protected as well. You must ensure your engine radiator has anti-freeze down to at least minus 20 degrees. When your car sits in the carpark all day with snow blowing, your engines water system would freeze solid without the anti-freeze and could cause major damage and expense. You should also have window washer additive to help from freezing. Using water on your windscreen on a sub-zero day will only freeze instantly and reduce your vision. Plus ensure your lights are clean and clear from snow when you leave the resorts. Your mechanic can ensure you have the correct anti-freeze with a simple test and

rubber compound and different tread design to give better grip on the snow and ice.”
Tyres
Chains and Equipment
Winter tyres are highly recommended if you are driving on numerous occasions during the season. You never know what you will encounter and what is around the next bend. Ian Arnold from Snowy River Tyrepower in Jindabyne knows all about tyres and said they stock three different winter tyres that have a lower freezing temperature, so they don’t go as hard in colder temperatures. “They also have a totally different
Four wheel drive cars are exempt from fitting chains in NSW, but they are mandatory to carry them and fit them when directed in Victoria. During the NSW winter season two wheel drive cars must carry chains into the Kosciuszko National Park driving to Perisher and are recommended to carry chains when driving to Thredbo. Chains must be carried beyond Thredbo past Dead Horse Gap. Note that NPWS recommend carrying
AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATION IN THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS The Jindy Inn is central to town and located only 200 metres from local shops, restaurants and cafes. We offer an on-site guest only lounge/bar/cafe that serves afternoon tea and après drinks. Guests also have access to free Wi-Fi, guest kitchen, drying room and newly renovated bathrooms. The major cause for all road accidents in the winter is people driving too fast, overtaking when not necessary causing people to brake suddenly and general stupidity. Speed limits are reduced in winter for good reason, as there can be many variables in the road condition including snow and ice. Be patient, as spending your morning in the ditch is not as fun as arriving safely at the resort and skiing and snowboarding. Slow down, take it easy and everyone will arrive safely. Options Perisher have a great alternative instead of driving to the resort. Skitube is a train that starts below the official alpine snow line and delivers you straight to the resort at either Perisher of Blue Cow. The parking is plentiful at Skitube and makes your day easier, especially if you have left a bit later in the morning to travel.

Get snow fit for the season WE all know that feeling of ‘oh dear I should have prepared for this’ when we hit the slopes for the first time each season, or even the second and third times too. Trusting in the old adage of ‘ski to get fit’ when really, we should be focussed on ‘get fit to ski’, many of us find ourselves with day three legs and calves that scream all too often. There are a few things you can do that don’t take up too much of your packing or leisure time that you could probably add on to your trip preparation. When you’re on the phone, do wall sits. Yes, it really hurts when you are on a long phone call, but this old-fashioned ski prep exercise that our Dad always made us do
Squat - Tuck Challenge - the snow fitness way This is our signature exercise. It works all the main leg muscles (quads, hamstrings and glutes) at the same time. On snow, we spend a lot of time in this deep squat position so getting used to it and working through this range of motion is a must to feel strong on snow. - Place feet hip width apart - Take a squat position at a depth that challenges you - Activate your core and look just ahead - Hold it and feel the burn in all the right places.
Squat - with combo lifts - side and butt It is so important to be strong in the legs, around the hips and butt. This is a great squat combo exercise that targets all the right places. It’s a compound
before the annual week away, well it does help. Squats – yes lots of squats. Even those crazy 30 day squat challenges you see on Facebook can help – squats are good (if you do them properly of course) and you’ll be smiling in the pub in the afternoon when you don’t hurt as much as your mates do. Sneak in incidental moments of squats or balancing on one leg – when you’re in the kitchen waiting for the toast to burn or for the kettle to boil. Real squats with bands are even better but tripping up in the kitchen isn’t ideal so save that for a safer location. You could still pull them exercise, using several muscles and joints at the same time. ğ ' ! / #$+ 2$ /# + -/ ğ ,0 / *2) 2$/# 4*0- 0// ' $)" the way ğ . 4*0 '$!/ 2$/# 4*0- # ./ ' $)" the way, lift one leg to the side ğ ' !**/ *2)Ă ,0 / *2) " $) on both feet ğ . 4*0 '$!/Ă '$!/ /# / . off in the lunchroom though – and smile with pride when someone questions what you are doing… ‘oh just preparing for my upcoming ski holiday’. Got a fit ball? Sit on it at the desk or at home, better still kneel on it when you are watching TV (ok this takes a bit of practice but it’s great when you get it). Get some balance activities in just a little distance away from the couch. Use a bosu ball, a balance board, whatever you’ve got – get those little muscles moving and remember, every little bit helps. Go for a walk, not just to the mailbox and back, but in the neighbourhood. Focus on your breathing, think about your snow ğ *(+' / )/$- . / *) *) ' "Ă ! Having a strong core is crucial to having a more enjoyable and productive time on snow. - Lie on your back, feet hip width apart on floor with a 90 degrees bend in the knees - Activating the entire core - Lift the body up as one unit creating a long, straight line from your knees, to hips to front of shoulders - Squeeze at the top for a movement before returning to the ground, then repeating.
Lunge – Static Lunges deliver fast results and use several muscles and joints. holiday ahead, smile and give yourself a little cardio action so you’re not getting your puff on in the first run of the day. Remember, the desk is the killer – for hips, legs and more… so we have to fight the pain that being at a desk causes us and focus on the fact that we are going skiing or snowboarding. That’s not so hard is it? Just don’t run with Jane Fonda’s ‘no pain no gain’ theory as that won’t set you up for a successful first day nor an injury free holiday in the snow. Ps – just get moving… To get you started we have given you some exercises you can do courtesy of our fitness guru Manuela Berchtold from SnowFitness.
TO GET STARTED As there are so many different fitness and strength levels out there, try either of these options and put these exercises to work for you. Remember to always do a warm up, cool down and a stretch. 1 – Sets and Reps Do approximately 20 – 25 repetitions of each exercise 3 – 5 times with a short rest in between. 2 – Make it a fun Circuit Complete 30 – 45 seconds of each exercise continuously, then rest for 1 – 2 minutes then repeat. Repeat entire circuit 3 – 5 times to give you a nice little workout.
Jump on to www.snowfitness.com.au and sign up for your FREE Trial. This gives you access to a typical Snow Fitness session, a core session and a stretch session for FREE. These 3 sessions are yours to keep and use anytime, anywhere as they have no expiry.
