The First Word AFTER one of our better opening starts the 2021 snow season is shaping up nicely as we progress towards the July school holidays and beyond. We have a quick wrap up on following pages of the great snowfall prior to the June long weekend plus information to help you enjoy your snow holiday as best you can. There is a lot to consider here in the mountains during winter, and if you have not been here before, or are revisiting after several years away, take the time to learn enough to extract every bit of enjoyment from your weekend or week stay. I can tell you it is going to be a busy season. Accommodation bookings have been very strong, so we know there are many of you who like the snow, just like we do. If you have not booked already and plan to visit, you should act on that notion right now. You may have heard that Selwyn Snow Resort is closed until 2022, so if you want to ski and snowboard in the resorts, your options this year are Thredbo, Perisher and Charlotte Pass. In this edition we have something for everyone, from history, celebrations, snow and event information, activities for relaxing or adventuring, new faces and old
faces, plus talk about international travel. Sure, we know you might not travel this coming summer for an international snow holiday, but we know you like to dream of your next sojourn, and we need to support this industry. In late June our new Snow News website will launch, and to celebrate we have a ski giveaway, so head to page 37 and enter. The Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP) draft master plan will be unveiled in late June. This 40 year master plan will define the future of Jindabyne, Thredbo and Perisher. All residents and interested visitors should read the draft plan and make submissions if you want to comment on any aspect of the plan, be it positive or negative. More feedback will be vital to shape the final master plan. Enjoy the skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing and the Snowy Mountains, we know you have made a great location choice for your winter snow holiday.

Fun Time For Kids NOW that you have made the choice of a snow holiday for the July school holidays, what can you expect if you are new to the mountains. Firstly, it may be colder than what you are used to, but that’s just how it is here in winter. And much better for the snow quality to stay cold. But here is how you can adapt plus keep the kids happy. DRESS WARM Look at the weather forecast for your resort or where you are travelling to the next day. And then prepare from there. If it will be snowing and windy, it will be much colder. You will then need a thermal layer under your ski suit, and even a fleece top. The wind chill makes a big difference to how cold it feels, and if you want to stay on the mountain all day, you need to stay warm. Goggles are the best for kids especially if it’s cold. Gloves, beanie, helmet, ski suit (jacket and pants), thermal underwear, fleece top, neck warmer, goggles and socks are all required. EAT BREAKFAST The kids will be using lots of energy, either skiing, snowboarding or running
around in the snow. So be sure they have a good breakfast and drink water. Your body also needs energy and hydration during the day, so pack some snacks and make sure everyone drinks water during the day. Have a good lunch. A good tip, pack some snakes in the kids’ pockets so they can snack. RENTAL GEAR If you don’t have your own gear you can hire skis, snowboards, helmets and clothing for the whole family. Where possible do this the evening or afternoon you arrive, many places stay open late. It is not a 5-minute exercise, allow at least 40 minutes minimum per family. You will need to buy your own goggles, sunglasses and gloves, purely for hygiene reasons. TRAVEL TO THE RESORTS Like you there are lots of other people doing the same thing and lots of people leave at similar times. Big tip, leave earlier and allow plenty of time. It is better to arrive early than late, especially if you have pre booked snow lesson. Look at the maps before you drive and

understand the directions if you are new to the area, plus you might need snow chains. (see page 20) LESSONS AND TICKETS The resorts have been advising from before the season started to pre purchase tickets and lessons. Plus you get the best deals pre booking. If you have not done this, look at the websites before you leave to see if

everything is available. Most likely all lessons in school holidays are already booked out. But if you are planning your trip for later in the season, book now. Now that you have visited, we hope you agree that a snow family holiday is one of the best. To see the smile on kids faces, enjoying skiing or snowboarding or making a snowman, it is all worth it for the memories.

Season’s
Snowy Start
By STEVE CUFF THE Snowy Mountains started the 2021 snow season in grand style. Firstly, Perisher opened a week early on Friday June 4, and the following week the snow gods delivered one of the biggest pre season storms just before the June long weekend, depositing 60cm of snow in the alpine. Thredbo received 25cm of snow in the village, and the surrounding region was

covered in snow. Jindabyne had one of their biggest recent snowfalls with about 10cm covering the town. While it may have looked all winter wonderland, it certainly did play havoc in town and on the roads with many cars requiring towing the following day. What this storm has done is set the season up perfectly for any following snow. In the resorts they have a great base to build from, and with cold nights for snowmaking and smaller snowfalls following in mid June, it has people

excited for the remainder of the season. With 50cm of snow broadcast far and wide via the city newspapers, TV stations and social media, the official June long weekend was packed to the rafters. Both Thredbo and Perisher had great visitation on the slopes, and thousands
visited just to see the snow. Businesses reported a bumper weekend of trade. As was expected, with such huge numbers the car parks at both resorts did reach capacity on Sunday. This may have set the tone for future big weekends, so visitors should factor into their driving

schedule that more traffic means longer drive times and the expectancy of capacity being reached in resort car parks by mid morning. Just a warning. This season will see many new visitors who may not have visited previously, or for many years. With no international travel to appease their snow appetite, bookings for the winter season are at an all time high much earlier than prior winters. For anyone wishing to visit, they should book now to avoid missing out. Here are a selection of images from early June.

The Bin Is The Same, So What’s The Difference? Not all recycling is created equal. IT’S different up here, isn’t it? Australia’s alpine regions only make up 0.5% of the country’s total landmass, making the Snowy Monaro one of the most unique environments on earth. We’re glad to welcome you back. Through fires, floods and the worst pandemic this side of World War I - it’s been a long wait. But we’re ready, the mountains are ready, and we hope you’re ready too.
This time we’re asking for a little help from you while you’re here. Recycling can still be confusing for some. The recycling rates here don’t reflect our incredible natural environment. We are above the average state contamination rate and between the last two bin audits, this rate has increased substantially - and more contamination means more recycling going to landfill. To make it even harder to stay on top of what’s OK and what’s not, what can be recycled changes from place to place. Just because something’s all good to go in the bin back home, doesn’t necessarily mean
that it’s OK here. So, what should you put in our kerbside recycling bins while you’re here? Household bottles and containers including glass bottles and jars, rigid plastic bottles (lids removed) and containers, metal cans, aluminium foil, empty aerosol cans, clean paper and cardboard, newspapers and long-life cartons. There’s plenty we can accept. The tougher part is what shouldn’t go in kerbside recycling bins. Say no to soft plastics, plastics with ‘recycling’ triangle numbers #4, #6, and #7, shredded paper, polystyrene, batteries, food scraps, clothing or textiles, nappies or hygiene products, hoses, netting, wire, building materials and hazardous waste. All these contribute to contamination and your recycling efforts are then wasted. THERE ARE SIX KEY POINTS FOR RECYCLE RIGHT: ̋̽`ĀĀť̽ġŶ̽ ġĿťķĀ ̋̽`ĀĀť̽ŋŽŶ̽ ŋĔŶ̽ ķÕŭŶġòŭ ̋̽`ĀĀť̽ġŶ̽ ÕĔĀ ̋̽`ĀĀť̽ŋŽŶ̽ ĿÕķķ̽OŶĀĿŭ ̋̽`ĀĀť̽ġŶ̽ ķĀÕł ̋̽`ĀĀť̽ġŶ̽bŋŋŭĀ̓̽

Remember to wipe or rinse any excess food and drink from all bottles, containers and tins before placing them in your recycling bin. Explore The Thredbo Backcountry By STEVE CUFF IN recent years our intrigue with exploring the backcountry has increased. Where once many people just admired the scenery and enquired about what was beyond the resort boundary ropes, now they want to experience it themselves. Thredbo Backcountry Tours are adding to their products this season to meet demand plus cater for their clients’ specific requirements. Alex Parsons who runs the tours said the big change is Thredbo are doing private tours this year as there was a quite

demand last season. “It was always just group tours going out, but now I have got privates which we can really tailor the experience, you can have whatever group you want - a bunch of friends that you can them get all on board on private tours,” said Alex. Another exciting option this year is private tours to Mt Kosciuszko on top of the regular group tours. This adventure allows guests to reach the summit of Australia’s highest peak and take in the magnificent 360 degree Main Range panorama. Having done this tour myself with Thredbo, it is highly recommended if you want to reach the top of Australia in winter. All tours have a maximum of five people plus guide and offer a variety of locations and terrain. Skiers, snowboarders and those just wanting the adventure on snowshoes are all catered to. There are great options to choose from, Ramshead Range, Twin Valleys, Mt Kosciuszko, all of which offer something different. Plus, you don’t have to be an expert skier, Thredbo Backcountry Adventures cater to different levels. “We have got twice as many guides this year as last year and have a lot of

experience in that team,” said Alex. “We’ve got people who have guided in Italy and New Zealand, so it is a pretty experienced team this year as well and means we can book many more tours.” “One of the classics is Bogong Creek, so if you are familiar with Dead Horse Gap it is just that little bit further into that valley, that’s a really beautiful place in the trees. You get to see gorgeous snow gums and I’ve seen echidnas walking across the snow in that area before. So, you do

get that little bit of wildlife,” said Alex commenting on one of her favourites. There is an adventure waiting for you this season and an experience that will reveal the magnitude of the stunning Main Range of NSW.

Kids Love New Play Area KIDS will be very excited with the new Kids Zone Play Area at the Jindabyne Bowling Club, but more importantly for parents or mums wanting to catch up for a coffee, it is inside and not weather dependant. Jindabyne Bowling Club General Manager John Riordan said the new venue has been very popular from its opening in early June and it is all part of a makeover
for sections of the club. “The parents have absolutely loved the new play area, and the kids have had so much fun,” said John. “When you think of it, there are not many places to go with kids on bad weather days in Jindabyne. We have found the parents have been meeting up for lunch or just coffee, and it is all safe for the kids.” The Kids Zone is fully enclosed with glass, and the entire area has been designed for the space. The beauty is parents can see what the kids are doing at a glance, and still carry on with conversation. Tabitha King from Berridale said she had seen that the play area was now open and decided to visit more often. “I think it is a fantastic idea, it’s nice and big and keeps them occupied while mum and dad can have a nice meal,” said Tabitha. “They think it is the best, they want to come here every day now.” “It is somewhere to actually take the

kids when the weather is bad, they can still have a good play. We will probably come here more often and do our meals here now when we do go out for meals.” With the club allowing dining in both the bar and the dining room area, the Kids Zone has not reduced capacity at all. The dining room can still cater to a large audience. Guests will notice the club has brand new furniture in the dining room and in
the main bar there are new couches to relax on. Throughout the year there are always themed nights including regular Wednesday and Thursday raffles, poker night, trivia night plus the popular Monday night wings night. The club is open for lunch and dinner, with great views to Lake Jindabyne. Members also receive discounts. See ad on page 6 for more information.

Thredbo 2021 Environmental Week THREDBO has partnered with POW, Red Energy and Keep it Cool to bring Thredbo Environmental Week back to the mountains. The week is dedicated toward driving awareness to Snowy Mountains visitors, the community and beyond about environmental initiatives and what we can all be doing to protect winter. On Monday July 19, Thredbo will host a mass morning backcountry hike to the peak of Mt Kosciuszko to show support of environmental initiatives. Into the evening, the Enviro Talk event will be held at the Lounge Bar at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel where registered guests can fill up on snacks, drinks and brain food with short talks from industry experts and
discussions on actions for the future. Thredbo announced they were awarded Gold EarthCheck certification in a first for an Australian snow resort this year. Leading up to this award, in July 2019, Thredbo alongside Red Energy and Snowy Hydro, unveiled all major resort operations would be powered with clean and renewable sources of energy. EarthCheck is the world’s leading environmental certification and benchmarking program for the travel and tourism industry. The recognition makes Thredbo a leader of sustainable tourism destinations worldwide certified to the internationally recognised EarthCheck Destination Standard.

Family Outing At Discovery Centre LOOKING for something extra for the kids this winter? Look no further than the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma, the perfect venue for entertainment on a different level. The immersive theatre will not only be enthralling for the young ones. Everybody walks out thinking wow, that was impressive. Plus, you are rewarded with some Snowy Scheme facts and figures you may not be aware off. The Snowy Scheme was an engineering feat of a generation, one that impressed the entire world and to this day staff at the Discovery Centre are still informing guests of all the fascinating wonders of the scheme.
◼
WATCH: The immersive theatre.
Walking through the centre, there are great photographic displays, memorabilia and the kids can even generate electricity by riding the stationary bike as fast as they can. A model tunnel boring machine from the Snowy 2.0 project is an attraction, and the intricacy in which it has been recreated in model form is amazing. When it comes to displays, there is the diorama of the Snowy Scheme showing the mountains, rivers, dams and power stations, and to see what electricity is currently being created from the different power stations across the mountains is fascinating. Sure, it is a day out for the kids, but the big kids (adults) will love it more. Driving through the region you may not be aware but the Snowy Scheme surrounds you. You cross the Jindabyne dam wall to access the snow resorts. Constructed in the later 1960’s the dam flooded to create what is Lake Jindabyne today. Drive to Guthega and you see the impressive Guthega dam, you can drive to Lake Eucumbene dam wall and in Talbingo you can see the impressive Tumut 3 Power Station. At Khancoban you can see the Murray 2 and Murray 1 Power Stations. One of the greatest facts is the snowfall

during winter drives the whole scheme, the rivers and water flows generating power through the strategically placed power stations. The new Snowy 2.0 project is really ramping up now and tunnel boring at Lobs Hole and from Tantangara Dam will be continuing for the coming years as they bore new tunnels and create a new underground powers station. Unlike the Snowy Scheme project where the majority of construction work was visible, the Snowy 2.0 project will mostly be at Lobs Hole and only accessible for
working crew. The Snowy 2.0 has been a huge boost to the local economy, just like the original scheme helped shape the region and towns of what it is today.

Local Company Ecomenities Helping Reduce Single Use Plastics All travellers have experienced single use plastics in hotels, now Jindabyne’s Claire Hanley from Ecomenities has designed a product to help create change. REDUCING single use plastics, especially in sensitive areas such as Kosciuszko National Park, is a challenge for tourism operators and NPWS. A double hotel room can produce up to 1000 mini guest soaps bottles per year or 1kg of waste per week. Jindabyne based hotel soap company Ecomenities is targeting single use hotel guest soaps and has created a zero waste hotel soap system with luxury Australian made soaps. Ecomenities soap dispensers have been installed at Guthega Inn as part of the hotel’s recent luxury refurbishment. The hotel soap system helps accommodation providers to become more sustainable and meet travellers’ demand for luxury and sustainability. Claire Hanley from Ecomenities said they are delighted to be increasing their local customer base with the installation at Guthega Inn. “Our system helps hotels to reduce
waste, cleaning time and costs. We also meet the expectation of today’s travellers who are looking for a more sustainable experience but still want luxury soap in their hotel bathroom,” said Claire. Guthega Inn has opted for the Snowy Mountains soap merchant range of soaps to provide their guests with a truly local luxury experience with locally grown, harvested and distilled oils and a retro design by local graphic artist Simon Blazey. Jenny Kennedy, owner of Guthega Inn says: “Like all our colleagues in the Perisher Ranges Area we are committed to minimising our environmental footprint while delivering the best products to our guests. Ecomenities compliment that commitment perfectly.” Marion Battishall, Environmental Liaison Officer at NPWS, is currently working with KNP tenants to reduce waste in their operations and hopes that many
other accommodation providers will follow the lead of the Guthega Inn. Marion commented, “NPWS are committed to reducing waste at both local and state scales. Local collaborative group, Sustainable Snowies, comprises NPWS, Ski Resorts, local council and Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce. Together we are working to address tourism generated litter, aiming to reduce waste in KNP and the region. Sustainable Snowies encourages businesses, such as Ecomenities, that aim to create zero waste products.” At the recent Snowy Monaro Business Awards, Ecomenities were recognised for their design where they received the Innovation Award. Hotel owners looking to reduce their waste can contact Claire via their www.ecomenities.com.au website.

Your 40 Year Future By STEVE CUFF THE Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct draft master plan will be released in late June. It will be imperative that residents and interested visitors read the plan and offer input and help shape the 40 year future of Jindabyne, Perisher Valley, Charlotte Pass and Thredbo. The Special Activation Precinct (SAP) has been the total culmination of three years’ work, starting out as the Jindabyne master plan and then being upgraded to include the key resort areas. The NSW Government has been the driving force behind the project with initially community input into the Jindabyne master plan, and then the SAP team engaging with community activation groups for specific input and ideas. Numerous consultants have delivered reports, six of which were made public during autumn. Thirteen more reports and the draft master plan will have been revealed at the end of June. The SAP is a 40 year vision to create a more sustainable future by increasing year round tourism, creating year round employment opportunities and investing in infrastructure. The NSW Government is expected to invest in the vicinity of $200 million. Most of this investment will be in the early stages of the master plan with a focus on infrastructure. A key part of the master plan will also be to define areas and zoning and create
opportunities for private investment. There will be streamlined development application systems within the defined SAP region. Jindabyne, being the gateway to the popular resort areas within the Kosciuszko National Park will be a key focus. There has been much discussion and planning on what Jindabyne could like in future years. This will be especially important for the community to study the draft plan and further reports and offer their input, be with opposing thoughts on certain aspects, or positive feedback to say, yes that is on the right track. Residents and visitors alike know how the seasons work, winter is extremely busy, summer and autumn is on a growth trend for visitation and some dips in between. That all bodes well for the future, especially with such large investment from the NSW Government. A key area to consider is the lack of planning and development in particular at Perisher Valley. As the busiest winter resort, Perisher Valley needs urgent attention to decide who has control of the head lease so as it can be improved. (Note: at time of going to print in mid June, the draft plan had not yet been released) The Snowy Mountains Magazine have three more pages of information on pages 68 to 70. You can visit the SAP website via details on the ad below.

The Ascent Short Beaked Echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus
The story behind the picture THIS was my second day following echidna tracks in the snow. I had searched all the previous day, following the funny little footprints up the hill, down the hill, left, right, up, down and repeat. Echidnas never follow a set path, they follow their noses and go where the smells take them. I had skied many kilometres already and ended the day with cute little footprints leading into a hole. Knowing that the echidna would not surface again until the sun had emerged, I skied home in the dark slightly let down. The next day I picked up where I left off confident that I could again pick up the trail. Sure enough, 200 meters higher up the face of the slope, I could see a small
dark creature ascending the steep snow. I was not sure why the echidna was still heading higher above the tree line. They are a creature that loves to wonder, and this was the best example I had ever seen. I wasted no time in skirting wide around the echidna so as not to spook it. Once I was high enough up above it and in line with its current path, I started to slowly slide down the slope on my stomach so as not to crunch the windblown snow underneath me. Once in position, I just had to wait as the echidnas’ short little legs struggled through the deep snow towards me. I clicked off a few shots until it finally reached me, it then stopped and raised its nose high into the air. I had seen echidna do this before, it could not see me or hear me, but it could smell me. It only looked up the hill though as if to say, yes, I can smell you. I am still going up there and you can’t stop me. That is exactly what it did, as soon as I took this image it made its escape higher up the mountain.

Driving In Snow & Snow Chains Driving in snow is different to normal driving, the most common factor for all accidents is driving too fast on slippery roads. The last thing you need is to slide off the road, get bogged in snow and waste valuable time and money being towed out. Most snowfalls and icy road conditions generally occur in the Kosciuszko National Park at higher elevations. Although on cold nights, ice can form ‘anywhere’ where there is moisture and low temperatures. Look ahead and be cautious of suspicious road conditions. Follow local weather advice, snow reports and road conditions every morning. The Snowy Mountains Highway from Adaminaby to Talbingo can experience snow and icy conditions. This highway has added traffic with extra truck haulage for the Snowy 2.0 project. TIPS FOR SNOW DRIVING Always leave extra space between you and the car in front to allow for the unexpected. If directed to fit chains by authorities you must stop and fit chains, otherwise
you cannot proceed. Know how to fit them securely. Smooth driving is key, do not hit the brakes hard. For manual cars stay in low gear to control speed. To slow down, slowly pump the brakes on and off lightly to control your speed. On snowy roads traffic will be slow, so just relax, drive slowly and everyone will arrive safely. When driving downhill leave more space and control speed continuously. When parking, leave car in gear and leave handbrake off. Lift up wipers on windscreen to avoid freezing. When leaving the carpark, while warming up the car, clear all windows and remove snow from roof. Be sure to have petrol, don’t run close to empty in case there is a traffic delays and you need to leave the car running to stay warm. Don’t park on side of snowy roads, too many people get bogged parking in wrong areas. Ensure your car radiator has antifreeze to stop engine from freezing up. Ask your mechanic.

The Best Ambassadors For Thredbo Thredbo have a long association with the best Australian snow athletes and the resort continues that trend with their 2021 ambassadors headlined by Winter Olympic gold medallist Torah Bright. Accompanying Torah at Thredbo this year are fellow Olympians, Jarryd Hughes, Tess Coady, Paralympian Ben Tudhope, snowboarder Josie Baff, skier Abi Harrigan and exciting young 16 year old snowboarder Valentino Guseli. TORAH BRIGHT Torah Bright is a long-time Thredbo ambassador and can regularly be seen around the village. JARRYD HUGHES Competing in PyeongChang 2018 and Sochi 2014, Jarryd Hughes is best known for the historic event where the then 22-year-old claimed a silver medal in a hotly contested men’s snowboard cross. Hughes has ranked as high as number two in the world on the FIS World Cup Rankings and recently won gold in the teams snowboard cross World Championships with Belle Brockhoff. TESS COADY Tess Coady is back with a bang following an injury at PyeongChang 2018. Ready To Push The International Button DURING the recent 16 months a lot has changed in the world and businesses have been highly impacted by the pandemic. None more than the international travel industry, of which there are several international snow travel companies. Felicity Moss from Mogul Ski World has created many a great ski holiday over decades. At the recent Snow Travel Expo in Sydney, Snowy Mountains Magazine enquired as to how her business and snow travel has fared. “We’ve held up well and we have stayed positive, we have kept as many staff on as possible,” said Felicity. “Jobkeeper certainly helped us in a big way and if it wasn’t for jobkeeper I think it would have been a lot more difficult. We were sad when that finished in March, but we are still keeping the staff on and helped them get extra work.” “They are working with us five day fortnights, but they haven’t been idle through the whole time. We have been working on our reservation system and our online system. So, while others have sat around and twiddled their thumbs, ours have been very busy.
“We are all going to be set for as soon as we’re told we can leave we will be ready to start selling again.” When asked were her loyal clients keen to push the button on their next overseas snow holiday, Felicity said, “the loyal clients are very ready to push the button”. “They keep asking when we can travel.” “One of the things that I think has helped us is we kept our marketing person on throughout the entire time. We have done an EDM out to the clients every two weeks. First of all dream destinations and we even went into restaurants into Melbourne and who was doing the best takeaway and things that we could relate. “Then we have got to planning their trips. We are taking a few bookings for January next year for people who are super positive, and we are hoping that the positivity is going to pay off. “With the loyal clients, we keep in touch and they ring, they are just ready to go as soon as we get that green button.” As for a trend on where people may like to travel it seems to be a case of wherever opens first.

Wine and Dine in Thredbo THREDBO Resort has unveiled what’s new for winter in the their food and dining realm and it’s bringing a little international vibe to the Australian alpine town. From on-deck Aperol and fondue afternoons to a late-night supper club with speakeasy vibes, there is a tonne to discover this season. Previously a secret restaurant serving an Italian fare, Segreto has been reimagined into a walk-in-only late-night supper club with speakeasy vibes. The menu has been carefully crafted with twilight grazing in mind. Think delectable deli selections and antipasto platters accompanied by rich reds, delicate whites and hand-crafted cocktails to be enjoyed into the hazy hours of the evening. The European vibes won’t be missed as Cascades has launched a VIP experience dedicated to two euro-alpine favourites, the Italian Aperol Spritz and hearty Swiss fondue. Guests will be able to book exclusive use of the Aperol VIP section on the Cascades deck to soak in sunshine, spritz and cheesy goodness all served with sweeping mountain views. Also new to Cascades, and Thredbo, is Executive Head Chef Paul Starley who

will be overseeing eleven resort venues including Eagle’s Nest, Australia’s highest restaurant. Paul hails from Southampton in the UK and has amassed a world of experience from an Executive Chef role at City Hall London, taking to the skies with British Airways First Class Lounge and to Sydney’s infamous Opera House - not to mention he is no stranger to cooking for the likes of Nicole Kidman and Boris Johnson. Showcasing his gastronomic prowess and passion to the Australian alpine region, he will be developing new culinary offerings around the resort into

the winter season and beyond. Flying over to Schuss Bar guests can expect a bit of a makeover. The longstanding Thredbo venue has been transformed into a sports bar with big North American vibes - think wings and White Claw, JD Fire and Free Popcorn. The relaxed mountain tavern features a ‘deal and day’ and will have guests second guessing which content they are sipping brews in. The village presents many cuisine temptations and strolling among lodges and venues is part of the Thredbo mystique. For those who savour their protein, Sante have a new delicious a la carte menu and this year have changed their booking strategy to be walk in only. The slow cooked southern American style BBQ pork ribs dripping with tasty sauce will be a winter favourite. Other headline dishes include Wagyu beef grain fed steak and sumac duck breast which will surely entice. Downstairs at the Candlelight Lodge, their European inspired venue is a hidden gem and hosts menu favourite’s Swiss cheese fondue, slow cooked pork knuckle

and Jägerschnitzel mit Spätzle. Nestle into a booth and celebrate a day skiing with draught European beer or authentic schnapps as you decide between pan fried swordfish or braised lamb shoulder. At the Denman’s Terrace Restaurant, find a new menu for winter 2021. Freshly shucked oysters or baked camembert are tasty starters or the seared scallop or roasted eggplant for entrée. The Terrace is always famous for its lamb, and the 12 hour braised lamb shoulder with root vegetable dauphinoise and minted peas or the pumpkin risottos could be your next favourite.

Athlete Pathways After Interschools Snow Australia recently held a Pathways presentation webinar for parents and schools that overviewed the Snowsports pathway from Participation to Performance, including the next steps after Interschools. Included were tips on how to develop as an athlete, the Para Snowsports pathway, and how to get involved in the Resort Club and Winter Sports programs. Coordinated by Rebecca Clark - the Snow Australia National Alpine and Pathway Coordinator, speakers also included: ̋̽Tom Hodges - Para Pathway Development Coach and Talent ID Coordinator. ̋̽Adam Hosie - Thredbo Snow Sports School Manager ̋̽Craig Branch - Thredbo Ski Racing Club Head Coach ̋̽Ali Bombardier - Perisher Winter Sports Manager ̋̽Nick Rankin - APSI (Australian Professional Snowsport Instructors Inc) General Manager “It was great to see so many parents and school coordinators engaged in learning about the many development opportunities for young athletes involved in both able and para Snowsports in
Australia, beyond the highly successful Interschools Snowsport Championships series,” said Rebecca. “I think this webinar gave them a chance to appreciate how the foundation level is crucial to our pathway, which focuses on the idea of progressively building the necessary skills for an individual to embark on a journey towards becoming a performance athlete - or even just being a good skier throughout their life.” Clubs’ programs are an important component of the athlete’s progression from grassroots to the high performance level. The club representatives on the panel gave valuable insights on the initiatives and programs offered by pathway clubs to support athlete development and provide them with the best chance of progressing through the sport. “As a pathway club, we really focus on long-term athlete development,” said Craig Branch. “Of course, we target the high levels of competition, and we want to make kids progress through the pathway, all the way to the elite level of the sport. But for the younger age groups these are important years of fundamental

Jindabyne Balloon and Flite Board Rides FOR years Jindabyne has craved those extra exciting activity options, well now they are here with Rethynk Experiences offering both scenic balloon rides and flite boards on Lake Jindabyne. Local identity Jason Gammell has nurtured the idea for years to offer something out of the ordinary, and after balloon tests during the summer you can now soar over Lake Jindabyne and take in all its splendour. The sight of the balloon drifting across the lake is something to behold. Better still is the feeling of guests you have been aloft in early winter. “We absolutely loved the balloon flight,” said Nicky Wilson from Jindabyne. “Daniel surprised me for my birthday because he knew it was something I’d always wanted to do. I’d told our daughter I’d take her when she was older, so it was perfect.” “Doing it over our own backyard was

pretty cool and being able to look at things from a different perspective. We had perfect weather and it was so calm and peaceful up there. At one stage we got up to just over 3000ft. “Daniel was a bit tentative at first but felt totally at ease once we got going. A couple of the others in our group felt the same. Heaps of people asked whether it was cold but it really wasn’t, except for when we went up higher. It was such an amazing experience, I want to go again! If you get the chance and not afraid of heights, it’s a must do experience.” Rethynk owner Jason Gammell said he was driving through town as the balloon was sitting out front of the caravan park. “Watching all the kids walking to school and looking up at the sky and pointing towards the balloon, it made me all warm and fuzzy inside,” said Jason. “It’s such an exciting thing and I’m so stoked. It started (idea) ten years ago and good to see it come to fruition.” “Guests are over the moon,” he said. “I try and convince them that it’s going to be fantastic and really love it, and when they get off the balloon they are awestruck.” “You can’t quite pinpoint what is so special about it, I have talked to a few people. I think it might be it was the first form of human flight. It’s using hot air, fire, there is no engine so there is very little sound unless the burners are on. You can hover on the surface of the glassy lake and then climb up to thousands of feet and be on this magical platform. “It’s always beautiful and calm, whenever
◼ SIGHT: This could be you flying over Lak Jindabyne. PHOTO: Steve Maxwell you are in a hot air balloon the weather is really, really nice.” Residents and visitors looking for another exciting activity can take to the lake on the flite board. Over summer it was cool to see them buzzing around the lake and with a few lessons to get you started, your new mode of transport awaits. “In winter they can expect very calm conditions, that is the major drawcard of flite boarding in winter, unless there is a weather system moving through the weather is really stable,” said Jason. “You can jump on a flite board and just go kilometre after kilometre on glassy water.” Guests are supplied with dry suits, with gaskets on the ankles, wrist and neck, and you simply wear your clothing underneath. The only exposed area is the face which if you fall off will be cold.

Shifty’s Last World Tour “In this life I’ve travelled, I’ve done everything. You come around this world once, and if you do it properly, once is enough.” Grant “Shifty” Turnbull. By STEVE CUFF
◼ Grant ‘Shifty’ Turnbull in his younger instructing days.
One of Perisher’s and the snow industry’s true legends, Grant Turnbull, passed away in February 2021. Grant “Shifty” Turnbull was a great character and during his 91 years he lived life the way many others might have preferred, without too many cares in the world. He will be sorely missed by his many friends in the snow industry and his beloved Bondi Beach where he was a 70+ year member of the North Bondi Surf Club. You could say Shifty had multiple lives. His world travels, ski instructing between Australia and Austria and time in between spent on Bondi Beach. Born in Drummoyne on July 2nd, 1929, Grant said in a previous 2018 interview his

“father had a big milk run and during the depression, my poor old dad went bust, so we packed the old car and said where do we go, and my mum said, ‘they tell me the Eastern Suburbs is a nice place to stay’ so we turned right and went to Bondi.” In the late 1940’s Grant was one of a small group to first surf at Bondi Beach. He joined the North Bondi Surf Club in 1949 to store his board, as “they were heavy back then”. From 1953/54 Grant would start what would become a lifelong travel pilgrimage to all corners of the world working on cruise ships. His workplace would become the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth ships to name a few, mostly in the position of fireman. His first trip to Charlotte Pass in 1959 was perhaps the most defining of his life when enticed by fellow surf club member Brian “Davo” Davidson. Ray Hookam secured the jobs, himself a huge part of surfing history and Midget Farrelly’s uncle. “At the time I wasn’t interested in skiing, I was a mad surfer and bought my first surfboard in 1947,” said Grant in 2018. “I knew a few fellas who were working at the Charlotte Pass Chalet, they were all North Bondi Surf Club guys. My first job was working down in the boiler room shovelling in the coal. It wasn’t a bad job, but I learnt to ski, I picked it up pretty well and at the end of the season, 1959, I was skiing everywhere.

He recalled, “one of the guys in the bar had to leave urgently and the boss Stan McGuinn came down and I am shovelling this coal in, and he said, have you got a white shirt, have you got a black tie, I am putting you in the bar.” “In 1963 I didn’t go to the mountains, I stayed on this Swedish ship. I used to do all the coast up to Portland and into Vancouver, Honolulu. It was great down in the engine room.” During this time, he also met Linda Ronstadt the singer before she made the big time. It would be one of many celebrities who crossed Grant’s path in life. He often taught skiing to the rich and the famous. “I taught James Packer to ski when he was ten years old. And his sister Gretel, she was beautiful,” said Grant. Life in Perisher “I came here (Perisher) in 64 and got a job on ski patrol with a fella called Brian

Shifty Perisher Celebration Saturday July 17 @2pm Top of Shiftys Run Eyre T-bar Friends will gather at the top of Shifty’s run on Eyre T-bar at 2pm for a small celebration followed by a ski down Shiftys followed by a few celebratory ales at the Alpine Eyre Kiosk. On the Saturday night there will be a dinner at the Eiger Chalet. Bookings required by contacting Hayley via stay@eiger.com.au email address.
Davidson and there was only two of us on ski patrol then. You could ski around and you wouldn’t see a sole. When I first came through here in 1959, Perisher wasn’t here. Grant spent many years at Perisher and would eventually have a run named in his honour in 2009 after notching up 50 years since his first visit to the Snowy Mountains. He would be Perisher’s first professional ski patroller eventually running the ski patrol up until 1969 before switching to ski instructing from 1970. Shifty’s Run out wide on Eyre was a popular spot for Grant to take his ski school classes. “I managed a ski lodge up here, Perisher Huette and I was there for about 32 years as manager, so I thought give the ski patrolling away and do a little bit of odd work here and there.” “The ski school director at the time, the 7ft snow goose we called him, he said, ‘Grant I have been watching you ski and I see how you handle people would you like to be an instructor’.” “I did a little course and then I got in and starting teaching. He said, ‘what we’ll do Grant, we’ll start you off here in school holidays and teach

the kids’. After that I did pretty well, and I have taught all the way through from 1970 to 2011.” What many people may not know is Grant was the pioneer for Australian ski instructors traveling for back to back winter seasons. In 1974 he said an Austrian instructor at Perisher said to him they could use someone who could speak English and is a good teacher at their Austrian resort. Grant became a fixture of the Tyrolean Village of Soll. “I started there in 74 and finished in about 2010 I think, every year all those years back to back, said Grant. Good friend and fellow ski instructor Shane Burdett said, “little did people know of the ski scene in Australia and to see an Aussie mix it with best was proof that Australia wasn’t just a sunburnt country.” “Grant blazed a trail for all Aussie ski instructors in the northern hemisphere,” said Shane. He also ran many tours throughout the States and Europe. In 1977 Grant’s USA Ski Scene tour travelled for 24 days throughout Colorado. “Grant was very modest about his achievements over 60 years and over 100 hundred seasons. He gained great respect within the village of Soll and will always be remembered as a pioneer and Grandfather to all the aussie ski instructors who followed in his footsteps,” said Shane. Grant was known as a ladies’ man, and he was a handsome fellow. At his 90th birthday party at the Eiger Chalet in June 2019 his friends gathered and

Brian Smith asked him years prior how he was progressing with the women, Grant leaned over and said, “if I was any busier, I would have to put a boy on”. When asked about how he got the name Shifty, Grant commented, “well that was put on me, a very maligned name I didn’t deserve that from Johnny Gibson. I took one of the guy’s girls out, it was just a friendly thing, a party or something and Gibbo said, “oh your shifty” and from then on it just stuck.” In typical modesty Grant said he wasn’t fussed on a run named after him. “I said who cares. But a few of the guys there said oh no we should name a run after you. I let them do all the work, I didn’t have to do anything. That was my favourite place, I used to go up the top of Eyre and head over, beautiful skiing, and no one around, great skiing.” Good friend Mark Cotter summed it nicely. “Grant Turnbull devoted half of his life to the snow, mostly Perisher, made thousands of visitors happy with his patience as an instructor and made countless friends laugh throughout the years. He was a loved member of the North Bondi Surf Club, and a great friend to all and will be remembered forever,” said Mark.

Other Activities Besides Skiing and Snowboarding Love the snow, but skiing and snowboarding not for you? Here are 5 great on-snow activities that don’t involve the cost of a lift ticket. By Michelle Lindsay There’s plenty of things to do in the Snowies when you need a break from the boards. 1. STRAP ON THE SNOWSHOES If you can walk, you can snowshoe. And snowshoes are a great way to explore the natural beauty of the mountains without a life ticket or excess adrenalin. On a good day, hike up to Porcupine Ridge in Perisher for stunning views back across the range. Dress warm and take a picnic and map - and check the weather before you go. 2. CROSS COUNTRY SKIING Cross country or ‘nordic’ skiing is the soul of snowsports, and has been around for tens of thousands of years. Using thinner skis and focussing on the horizontal rather than the downhill, it’s a great way to move through a snowy landscape. To get kitted out talk to Wilderness Sports in Jindabyne or at the Perisher Valley cross country trails. Cross country lessons also available by K7 Ski School. Best of all, no lift ticket required. 3. SCENIC DRIVES Did you know that Dalgety was nearly our nation’s capital? You wouldn’t know it to see it now, but
it offers great country charm and hospitality, plus great picnic spots by the Snowy River. Do the loop from Jindabyne to Dalgety and back via Berridale, and check out the pub, craft brewery, café and Tuscany restaurant open Friday to Sunday. It’s a great way to see the wild majesty of the iconic Monaro plains. 4. GRAB A TOBOGGAN Yes, it’s OK to toboggan this year after a temporary ban last year due to COVID-19. Perisher Valley has a dedicated toboggan slope - or just find a safe gentle hill by the side of the road but park safely. Rent a toboggan and grab some friends and family for some cheap old-fashioned fun. But note that there is no tobogganing in Thredbo resort. 5. BUILD A SNOWMAN There is something about building a snowman that brings out your inner child. Find a bank of snow, then get to work - and don’t forget to take a photo. Remember, don’t break off branches to use in your artwork if you’re in the national park. Bring a carrot (nose), scarf and extra beanie for your new friend. Pro-tip: Washing up gloves over your warm gloves can help keep you extra dry!
◼ PROUD: Ellie Lyons and her snowman.

New Owner For Adi’s Waxatorium FOR the previous 49 winter seasons Adi Mayer has been the face of ski tuning at Perisher where each day he would tune skis and snowboards for guests, amounting to hundreds of thousands during his time. Adi has now retired and sold the business to Nathan Clough. Nathan is no stranger to the tuning business having worked for Adi for the past 20 winters in what has become a family tradition.
◼ ERA: Adi Mayer with his new machine in 2019.
“My father Mick worked here for about 28 years, I started working with him, and then when he left I took over all the machine work,” said Nathan on the opening day of Perisher’s 2021 season. When asked about the season ahead as the new owner, Nathan said it was very exciting and he is looking forward to the winter. “Everything is going to run just the same as it did when Adi was here,” said Nathan. “Working it with him for twenty years I have learned quite a lot. He is the master. Adi stayed ahead of the game, he had the best machines, the first machines the whole time.” Commenting on the changes over the years he said we have one of the best machines in the world, the structures are so much better, the edging systems, everything has actually changed over the years in tuning. “With the Montana crystal magic machine and its automation, it does the base, the edges and the base bevel. The machine has two stones in it, and two edging systems and it is the bees’ knees at the moment.” Working seven days a week does not faze Nathan, mentioning he did that anyway
◼ NEXT: New owner Nathan Clough on his first day, June 4th. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff with Adi during the peak of the season. A keen skier and snowboarder, he was also resigned to the fact he may not get on the slopes this winter. “No, probably not this year being my first year,” he replied. Like many people with seasonal jobs, Nathan works in the construction industry in the summer months. His wife is pregnant with their first child due in October so he certainly welcomes the snow season early opening in his first year as business owner. “It’s good to get off the building site as it is cold now, its nice to be up here.”
Nathan said Adi retired as his health was not the best, but he leaves a long legacy. Adi grew up in the Austrian region of Villach before moving to Australia. Working for Perisher in the early 70’s, Adi approached the company in 1977 to start a ski tuning business and the rest they say is history. We wish Adi all the best in his retirement, and have a previous story on our website at www.snowymagazine. com.au/perisher-news/adi-ski-tuningmaestro

Welcome To Perisher Cross Country ONCE you have experienced gliding along the scenic cross country trails of Perisher, you will understand why some prefer their own method of transport rather than alpine downhill skiing. Yes, there is more effort involved, that is one part of the attraction, the other experiencing nature at its core in sometimes total solitude. The Perisher cross country skiing community have worked overtime this summer to prepare the Perisher XC Centre for a what is expected to be another exciting season. The sight of 50cm of snow on the trail in early June have seen enthusiasts already make an early start to their skating season. The Nordic Shelter will be open for the coming winter with a few COVID restrictions where necessary. But there will be access to the public areas of the Shelter. Summer Work Parties have focussed on maintenance and some upgrades. New identifying signage has been installed on the building, courtesy of a grant gratefully received from Boonoona Ski Club. A solar panel system has been installed along with additional roof insulation. The Shelter depends on donations from users and fundraising for its existence. A new method of accepting donations from
people who don’t carry cash anymore, will be in operation - a Quest Tap Donations device. Other exciting XC news is the arrival of the new, fulltime NSWACT XC Head Coach, Alexei Sotskov. He has been employed by Snow Australia to run the NSWACT XC athlete programs and to assist with the National AUS XC programs. He has been training the athletes remotely throughout these COVID times and there is great excitement to have him here in person. The Nordic Centre is a short stroll from the Perisher car park and easily visible behind the fire station. Like other sports, taking cross country lessons will improve your technique and make it more enjoyable. There are no crowds on the cross country trails.

Snowy Valleys Sounds Of Winter Music After a rousing and cool Tumbarumba start to Winter Bites Festival, all eyes now focus on Adelong and Batlow as they host big name musicians in July and August. The Snowy Valleys region are welcoming all music lovers this winter to join the inaugural Winter Bites Festival that headline a swathe of Australia’s biggest musicians. The first event at Tumbarumba’s Courabyra Wines was an incredible way to start the festival, with guests attending the vineyard where Busby Marou, Emily Wurramara, Corey Legge and local singer Rory Phillips wowed the crowd. Combined with restaurant dining and wine tastings it was a stellar weekend of festivities. Designed as a way to give back to the Snowy Valleys region for the tumultuous eighteen months following the catastrophic fires of 2019/2020, the Winter Bites Festival invites everyone to attend not only the music side of the festival, but to the smaller events that will pop up along with each weekend of the festival. Taking place on separate dates throughout June, July and August, the festival will showcase a ‘hero’ element of each individual town and its respective region. Tumbarumba showcased their cool climate wine and now Adelong and Batlow will roll out the welcome matt.
◼
Batlow’s famous apples.
The beef and lamb from Adelong are world class, the hazelnuts, cider and the famous apples from Batlow are always in demand, and you can sample all this fine produce to your hearts content during your visit. Over 30 local businesses, community groups and producers will also play a part in the festivities, taking turns to host fringe events, food and wine tastings, workshops, farm tours and cooking demonstrations. Nestled on the banks of Adelong Creek, this picturesque heritage gateway to the northern Snowy Mountains will be the second stop of the festival trail. Australian country singer-songwriter and ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Kasey Chambers will take to the stage at the Adelong Showgrounds on July 17 along with support from Charlie Collins plus more. Following on from Adelong, Batlow will host the final stop on Saturday August 28. Set amongst the lush green pastures with panoramic views of orchards across the Batlow Valley, Australian rock royalty You Am I will headline the line up from midday to 6pm at the Batlow Showground. More than two decades on from their first album release, they remain a much loved live band with 31 ARIA nominations and a bunch of number 1 records. The Winter Bites Festival is being supported by Destination Riverina Murray and funding through the Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery (RTBR) Grants. Destination Riverina Murray’s General Manager, Yvette Myhill, sees the event as a unique opportunity to fill a gap in the region’s seasonal event calendar. “Winter Bites has the potential to become a significant annual event for

How To Combat Winter Weather You’ve arrived in the mountains ready to ride - but the weather looks less than inviting. Here’s how to be ready for a good time on the snow, no matter what the weather brings. By Michelle Lindsay
◼ SNOWING: Skiing in snowy weather at Perisher. PHOTO: Perisher
THERE’S a saying in the mountains, if you don’t like the weather, wait a while. Weather changes quickly here, and a warm sunny day can quickly turn cold and unsettled - so it’s important to be prepared. When you’re here for a short while, you don’t have the time to wait for perfect conditions. But with a little planning you can be ready for whatever comes. HEAVY SNOW Fresh snow is always welcome, but can be challenging when it arrives on a day you want to ride. You’ll need to rug up using light, warm layers that wick any moisture away from your skin, and an insulated waterproof jacket and pants to keep in the warmth, and quality gloves. A snowy day can mean poor visibility and flat light, that makes it hard to pick out contours in the snow. Goggles with a low-light lens can help maximise visibility and keep your face warm. You’ll have better visibility if you stay low on the mountain. You - and any kids with you - will need regular breaks to warm up. So treat yourself to a hot chocolate and rest whenever you start getting cold or tired. That way you’ll be in the best condition to make the most of the fresh snow. COLD AND SUNNY Known as ‘bluebird’ days, this is the weather in the travel brochures. But don’t be fooled by the sunny skies - these days can start very cold, so you’ll need warm clothing and gloves. The temperature typically rises through the day, before falling in the afternoon, so be prepared to layer down, and back up, throughout the day. A small backpack can be
handy to carry extra layers - but you’ll need to carry any packs on your lap when you ride the lifts. If you’re riding with a family or group, a locker can be a handy idea. If it was warm the day before, the snow may have frozen overnight, leaving an icy layer that makes it hard to hold an edge. If you’re nervous on ice, consider having a coffee to give the snow time to soften before heading out. Or stick to the groomed areas for the best snow, as it’s likely to be firm and rough off-piste. It’s also very important to wear sunscreen, as the UV exposure can be off the chart. WILD AND WINDY Wind is a common feature in the mountains - with strong gusts common year round. Strong winds can mean it’s
unsafe to run some chairlifts, so you may find your resort closes lifts for some or all of the day. Be assured, they will open them as soon as it’s safe. In the meantime, check the lift status on resort apps, and seek out sheltered runs and on-ground lifts, like T-bars, pomas and rope tows. There is an upside to wind though - not only can it herald incoming snow - it can also create stashes of windblown powder in gullies around the mountain. GEAR UP AND GET OUT! While we would all like blue skies with fresh snow - it’s possible to make the most of the mountains in any conditions. So get the right gear, be prepared for any whether and get out there to make the most of your trip!

Friendship Great For Business THE snow industry is amazing in how friendships can evolve and people you meet at one stage of your life can have far greater impacts years down the track. The friendship between Fred Guyer and Cameron Barton started out when Fred, owner of the Stoeckli shop in Jindabyne and a resident of Newport in Sydney during summers was affiliated with the Newport School. Cameron, wife Michelle and their two children moved to Newport about eight years ago, attended the Newport Public School and immediately were involved with skiing and the interschools teams. They all met through this association. Now this past summer Fred has sold his Stoeckli shop and the importing business for Stockli skis to Cameron and Michelle who own Alpine Sports in Nugget’s Crossing. Stockli skis will be available up the escalator in Nugget’s Crossing, and the Stoeckli shop will now sell second hand gear, clothing, skis, boots plus more under the brand Reryde Second Hand Shop banner. “As soon as the kids were in the ski team, which is pretty much as soon as we moved to Newport, because of Fred’s affiliation with the ski team we started going there from the early days,” said Cameron. At this stage, the family were regular mountain visitors but that would change when they moved to Jindabyne three years ago and purchased the Alpine Sports store. Prior to that acquisition, Cameron enquired about the Stockli business. Fred said Cam asked him about 5 years ago was he ever thinking of selling the shop. At the time the answer was no.
After 20 years in the Snowy River Avenue shop Fred has semi retired. He will work at Alpine Sports in a transition period on weekends, assisting people with Stockli enquiries and greeting past clients. In the year 2000 he imported 30 skis before buying and opening the shop in 2002. “They were very good, and they skied well, all the reps told everyone and the instructors came in,” said Fred referring to how he managed sales in the early years selling to instructors. It certainly didn’t harm business that Fred’s son Marty worked at Perisher at the time, himself a great skier and race coach. “My original idea was to actually wholesale the skis and go skiing,” said Fred. He wasn’t sure that idea was a good one when he visited shops and people were not as responsive as he hoped. “It was an attitude that the ski industry was not a place to invest. There is not going to be any snow, there is not going to be any this, it was a dying industry,” is what Fred said peoples opinion were. “Anyway, it is anything else but. But that was what the thought process was and then I remember going around, and they said, ‘What are these?’ and ‘how much are they?’. Then they were $200 dearer on wholesale and they said, ‘why would I want more pieces of timber on my rack’. That is what they said.” “Then I thought, ok, this isn’t going to work. Only works if I start making a demo centre, so I buy the shop and do a demo centre. So that’s how that all evolved over time.” As a proud man from Switzerland, Fred is a lifelong man on the Stockli brand. Now that he has semi retired you will see him

They are a ski at the top of the range, both in performance and price point. Now the brand has a great profile plus a new importer and stockist in Jindabyne. “Fred put the order together for us this year and fair enough too, because he knows 1000% more than we do about Stockli,” said Cameron.
“That’s why Fred is here every weekend through the season to help those Stockli customers, but also his customers, that want to rent gear or see Fred. There are always those customers, and we were those customers, right.” “We would always drop in for a bit of a chin wag with Fred. There is plenty of those customers around, they will just come in here and have the chin wag in here instead of over there.”

New Cycling Events THE Snowy Mountains are becoming a major draw card for cycling events with two new events scheduled for March 2022. THE SNOWY CLASSIC Bicycling Australia have announced The Snowy Classic, the organisation’s fifth Gran Fondo after the Bowral, Noosa, Mudgee and Clare Classics. The race will debut on March 26, 2022. With two options, the 160km or 110km courses, both will be conducted on fully closed roads and with participant safety the number one priority. NSW Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government was proud to support the Snowy Classic from 2022 until 2026, with the event expected to inject $4.16 million into the State’s economy across the five-year period. “We are committed to supporting regional events in a COVID-safe way. We want to see visitors continuing to
enjoy our incredible destinations such as the Snowy Mountains, because we know that more event activity across our State means supporting local economies, creating jobs and boosting community morale,” Mr Ayres said. “We can’t wait for this event to kick off in March - with the region’s stunning scenery, unique wineries and distilleries, it will be an event not to miss for cycling enthusiasts across the country.” DROPS & HOODS A new series of annual cycling events has been announced by Lateral Events, the owners and organisers of L’Étape Australia by Tour de France. The new series of events, called ‘Drops & Hoods’ (referring to the bike handlebars), will uniquely offer riders more than ten events over four days, on multiple surfaces, multi-cycle disciplines and multiple distances. Lateral Events are currently developing

the first edition of Drops & Hoods to be hosted in the Snowy Mountains from Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th March 2022. This inaugural edition is set to feature some of the most famous elements of L’Étape Australia by Tour de France, staged in the Snowy Mountains between 2016 and 2019.

Being developed in consultation with local stakeholders, local businesses, and the local community, each edition of Drops & Hoods will encompass much of its host region, feature the best local roads as well as taking riders on some remote gravel routes in the wilderness.
Further $10 Million Snowies Iconic Walk Investment THE Australian Government will provide $10 million to deliver Stage 4 of the Snowies Iconic Walk, helping showcase an iconic part of the Australian landscape. The walk will link Thredbo, Charlotte Pass, Guthega and Perisher, Porcupine Rocks and Lake Crackenback Resort for a multi-day hiking adventure. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the project will complete the Kosciuszko Snowies Iconic Walk, a world-class walking experience through the internationally recognised tourism destination. “Set in the NSW Snowy Mountains, the Snowies Iconic Walk will showcase the unique alpine ecosystems of the Kosciuszko summit precinct,” the Deputy
Prime Minister said. “The Australian Government is committed to doing what it takes to back our struggling tourism operators and create economic opportunities for Australia’s regions. This announcement is another example of that.” New South Wales Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro said the continued development of region’s hiking and biking trails will ensure the Snowy Mountains remains a must visit destination. “The beauty of the Snowy Mountains is like nowhere else in the world, and this additional investment will ensure that the region cements itself as Australia’s premier adventure destination,” Mr Barilaro said. “The Snowy Mountains is no longer just a
winter destination, it is the destination of choice year round.” y̹ ĸ ĄĈĐ ĐÌĄ¹¹ ĈĐ Å¹Ĉ ģ áÞ Ą¹ currently under construction, delivering 44 kilometres of walking trails and related infrastructure from Guthega to Charlotte Pass, the Main Range loop via Mt Kosciuszko, as well as Charlotte Pass to Perisher. The 11 kilometre trail from Perisher Valley to Bullocks Flat will complete the 55-kilometre multi day walk experience, linking the walk to premium accommodation options and further transport connections. The project will build upon the NSW Government’s $17 million investment in this iconic attraction. This funding is part of the Australian

Thredbo’s Frank Prihoda Turns 100 in July
◼ STYLE: Frank skiing his final race at the Thredbo Masters 2011. By STEVE CUFF Frank Prihoda is the pride of Thredbo Village and will turn 100 on July 8, 2021. He is Australia’s oldest Olympian, having represented Australia in skiing at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Much has been written about his history, how he escaped his homeland of Czechoslovakia to spending most of his life living and working in Thredbo. He has been awarded many honours including having Franks Face run named after him in 2020, in 2014 he was recognised as one of the Faces of Thredbo for his contribution to the development of Thredbo plus awarded the Snow Australia Medal for representing Australia at the Olympics. In June the Snowy Mountain Magazine visited Frank at his home in Thredbo Village. His nephew Michael had just arrived to assist him through the winter, but Frank although requiring the walker for stability, was still in good health. Rather than recite his history again, we instead asked Frank about what he thought of his life. He is in fine spirits for his age, and when asked about the looming 100 year birthday, in true Frank style, he said, “I am looking forward to it, but I am not wildly excited, put it that way.” Suggesting that it was a very special occasion, Frank replied, “It is a good age, I am very happy that I have so far managed it get up to here, and in the opinion of many people, I am healthy, but I am not all that well. I have my troubles. I have my back problems which effect my walking greatly. I have my digestive problems and the list goes on.” When you have reached this age, naturally you have experienced many situations, and we enquired as to what Frank thought and
remembered of his past. “I have seen a lot and I have lived through a lot. My generation, I was born after the first world war in 1921. As a child of course you don’t quite grasp its understanding. In time I realised the years after the first world war in Europe, they were far from settled. There was sporadic fighting and the economic situation went up and down but more or less it was alright.” Frank said his father was doing quite well in manufacturing of artificial flowers, “a precious item in those days”, but his family was hit hard by the depression of 1929. His father had several mishaps in business. “So it was a hard struggle.” Just as things were improving in 1936 and 1937, Franks father passed away at age 49 in March 1937. “It was a great hit for the family. Mother was running the business but she had no idea really. She wasn’t in the

When talking about his Thredbo life, Frank said, “I have seen a lot, experienced a lot in various forms, better and worse. I lived here, I had a lot of friends yes and living in Thredbo was easy but mainly friendly. It was the ease of living, ease of contact with people and openness. Life was enjoyable. Plus, I am a skier, the snow was a bonus.” As we speak Thredbo was receiving 25cm
“I am looking forward to it, but I am not wildly excited, put it that way.” - Frank Prihoda, June 2021 business, she didn’t really know.” These days not too many people who talk about Hitler, but Frank remembers the draconian days and limitations on what you could do. “In 39 Hitler came, so we were occupied country by Germany.” He mentioned the war ending and in 1946 things started improving, and he thought “47 was a very good year” and Europe was going up again. “In February 1948, the Communist Government took over in Czechoslovakia and business has become very difficult and as I say, our little business of real no importance.” This was when Frank decided to escape and flee the country. “There was the escape and preparation and the beginning of the immigration. The arrival in Australia, settling down again and building up a new existence. So been a lot really,” was how Frank described what his life had been like until this point. “I have been very happy and living especially in Thredbo for 46 years. At first I was over 24 years in Melbourne, and I was in various businesses which was hard work. When I came here, things sort of turned for the better and I started prospering with the shop, which was a gift shop with souvenirs and gifts.” Frank said he liked his first shop location best at the bottom of the stairs. “Everybody went by in the morning, it was no buses. Everybody walked there (to the mountain).”
in the village and looking out the window, Frank said, “Look at this now, it is falling down thick.” We spoke about Frank giving up skiing in 2011. “When I turned 90 in 2011 I had on the day of my birthday, we had a race, which sort of a Nastar course race and it was great fun. I enjoyed it very much and afterwards there was a party at Knickbocker. Then later end of July, or very early in August, there was Thredbo Masters Race on a big giant slalom course and I did it and after the second round, I said no more because, I told myself, you are not up to it anymore, so I gave it up.” “Of course, I miss it and miss the moments and I miss the times.” “My main skiing actually was done in Europe because in winter I was busy. I had to work in the shop and sometimes I nicked out for an hour at first in the early days, in the beginning I put a sign Gone Skiing back in an hour. I had a three or four runs or whatever I managed and came back, that was the extent of my skiing. Look it was good, I enjoyed it, l loved to do it.” In 1977 Frank, Heinze Reichinger and Helmet Steinocker built their apartments, with Frank saying he always had a nice view out of my bedroom and saw the ski slopes. Commenting on Thredbo now, “the village itself, it was a shadow of what it is now, you know. It was still a village.” He spoke of his sister Sasha opening a lodge, “about where Black Bear is was Sasha’s lodge, they build it and opened it
◼ AWARD: Being recognised as one of the Faces of Thredbo in 2014 with Stuart Diver. 1959. They were the second commercial lodge. Sasha, she was a champion skier, she was a Czechoslovakian champion several times. She even won a race in Austria beating all the Austrian girls, so skiing was in the blood of the family.” Frank’s memory is still very sharp, he remembers history and people as if it were yesterday. He rattles of names of his friends and key people in Thredbo’s decades of history, of which he is an important part. “I remember those things because they touched me, they were embedded in me. I lived through it.”

Nestled in the awe-inspiring Japanese Alps, Nagano and Niigata are home to some of the best ski resorts in Japan Hakuba, Shiga Kogen, Myoko Kogen and Nozawa Onsen. with abundant geothermal activity, and have some of the country’s best natural hot spring baths. NAGANO AND NIIGATA SNOW RESORTS OVERVIEW HAKUBA - One of Japan’s premier alpine destinations, Hakuba Village is the gateway to ten amazing resorts, all accessible with a single lift pass. With access to over 200 runs, Hakuba Valley offers world-class skiing and snowboarding for all levels with amazing powder runs and exceptional groomed runs. The southern end of the valley starts with three ski areas, most notably Kashimayari, to the linked resorts of Hakuba 47, Hakuba Goryu and Happo One situated in the heart of Hakuba. The northern end of the valley is made up of Iwatake, Tsugaike, Hakuba Norikura and Cortina. If you want to take time away from the slopes, there are some excellent day tours available from Hakuba including relaxing hot spring onsens and a visit with the famous “Snow Monkeys”. SHIGA KOGEN Shiga Kogen is situated in the heart of Johshin’etsu Kogen National Park and is by far the largest ski resort in Japan, with 18 interlinked resorts accessible with the one lift ticket. Famous for its grand scale, amazing panoramic views, diverse terrain and large snow falls, Shiga Kogen is the ultimate

The accommodation at Shiga Kogen is spread out around many distinct villages and most of the options are ski-in/ski-out or located very close to the slopes. MYOKO KOGEN Myoko Kogen is set in the heart of Japan and made up of several resorts with the major ones being linked by a shuttle service. The main ski area - Myoko Akakura is made up of two ski areas, Akakura Kanko and Akakura Onsen. The region is known for its deep soft powder, of which it receives an abundance. The main village of Akakura has a wide range of accommodation, many of which are locally owned and have a rich history, traditional culture and onsens. NOZAWA ONSEN Nozawa Onsen is one of Japan’s original ski resorts. The traditional town has more than 30 natural hot spring sources located throughout it, and the narrow, cobbled streets are kept naturally clear of

Nozawa is known to have some of the heaviest snowfalls in the Nagano Prefecture, and the varied terrain gives everyone the chance to explore the powder like conditions. Nozawa Onsen will give you a truly authentic Japanese experience and is the place to explore small traditional izakayas and ramen restaurants, featuring the very best of local produce.

each day of your holiday plus Australians who have the Epic Australia Pass also have 5 consecutive days at Hakuba Valley with no blackout dates. Powering through deep powder and tree runs or cruising the “courses” as they call the groomed runs, your stay here will all be accompanied by the magical scenery of the Japanese Alps and Japan’s legendary culture and cuisines. Combine a plethora of extra activities including visiting the snow monkey, soothing in onsens and great cuisine, you have the complete holiday package. The Japanese are also quite possibly the most

polite people on earth. Their willingness to ensure you have everything you require, even clearing snow from the chairs adding to that extra service. Over the decades as the Hakuba Valley has grown, so too have local businesses emerged including the More Resort accommodation business. Founded 45 years ago by a traditional Japanese family, patriarch Kensho Kanazawa, 72, who is still in charge of the business, doesn’t just stay in the office, he insists on helping when he can in the hotel kitchen. Such is his nature, he believes in welcoming guests, good conversation, simple things and a smile on his face that he believes is the result of so many years in this business. Their Hakuba accommodation offerings include the Hotel Keyaki no Ki, Backpacker Nire no Ki, Condominium Excel Hakuba and the Condominium Hakuba Goryu situated slope side with ski in ski out location. Here you can awake each morning and step onto the snow with the greatest of ease.
Hotel Keyaki no Ki, 10 minutes from Happo Ski Resort has 80 rooms with ensuite including restaurants, bar and nightclub. Backpacker Nire no Ki is in front of Hotel Keyaki no Ki, very convenient plus all rooms have ensuite and access to the hotel Keyaki no Ki facilities such as onsen, restaurant, bar and pool table. Located downtown in Hakuba Village is Condominium Excel Hakuba, and with a bus stop (free shuttle) at the front door, you will be on the nearest slopes of Hakuba 47 Resort in 10 minutes. Over the years, More Resort has expanded into building houses and now also helps not only the Japanese, but also foreigners in the purchase and search of land, construction and documentation. With such a huge area to explore, visitors may well want to make use of local guides for not only finding the best of in resort cruising, but backcountry adventures seeking deeper powder. One thing is assured though, with so much terrain, your snow and adventure options are limitless.

JAPANESE snow holidays are top of the list for Australian snow enthusiasts, and the scenic mountains of Hakuba combined with a plethora of powder snow certainly make it a bucket list destination. Just three hours from Tokyo, Hakuba hosted marquee events of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and who can forget the most spectacular crash in Winter Olympic history with Hermann Maier airborne and bouncing through the netting? With all ten resorts accessible via the one pass, snow lovers will find a multitude of terrain to their liking in Hakuba. The beauty being you can try a different resort

Light Up Your Canadian Ski Holiday With Yellowknife Aurora Viewing CANADA’S winter Aurora season shines brightly from December through to early April, aligning perfectly with the Northern Hemisphere’s ski season. The best place to see the Aurora is in the Northwest Territories of Canada in Yellowknife, just a 2-hour direct flight north of Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton. Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories and also renowned to be ‘the Aurora capital of the world’. This statement is backed by science with the location of Yellowknife being directly situated underneath the Aurora oval, ensuring the highest percentage chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Aurora viewing in Yellowknife ranges from fly-in, fly-out wilderness lodges to unique Yellowknife based viewing cabins, stations or Indigenous experiences such as heated teepees. Popular downtown hotels and apartments including the Explorer Hotel, Chateau Nova, Days Inn & Suites and Capital Suites, situated only five minutes from Yellowknife airport, are the assembly points for Aurora operators to collect guests and take them to a spectacular viewing location. Popular aurora viewing operators in the Yellowknife region include Aurora Village, Northstar Adventures Indigenous Aurora Teepee Tour, My Bucketlist Tours, and Aurora Island Lodge. All operators provide essential winter clothing for the sub zero temperatures, as your ski gear won’t cut it. For travellers seeking an off the grid Aurora viewing experience, they may

Accessed by bush planes only, popular lodges operational in winter include Blachford Lake Lodge, famous for having hosted their Royal Highnesses, Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, as part of their Royal Tour of Canada, and Yellow Dog Lodge, a rustic fishing lodge that caters to aurora guests in winter. Both lodges have an in-house chef providing all meals and a variety of lodge rooms, or cabin stays. During the day, Yellowknife has an array of winter activities to keep guests entertained. Here not only can you experience ice road tours, but also ice fishing, dogsledding, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, Bristol Pit snowboard park, ice skating, snowshoeing and much more. Yellowknife also boasts a thriving culinary scene, the city has a wide variety of restaurants, pubs, and bars serving international and indigenous cuisine. Yellowknife city tours are offered by local operators, along with Indigenous cultural tours, where visitors can learn the wisdom of storytelling handed down through generations with an Indigenous guide. Kids Catch Fish
◼
BIG: Murray Ogilvie with a big trout in Lake Jindabyne.
The Craft of Fly Fishing Talk with any keen fly fishers and you can see it in their eyes, they love the thrill of tempting the trout onto the fly. It is an art and one many are always trying to perfect. Winter time is ideal to perfect your craft with easy access to the lakes (rivers are closed in winter). Then as your technique improves you can walk the river’s edge in summer and stalk your prey with the confidence that you can land the fly right in the exact spot required so as not to spook the fish.
This may sound easy, but in reality there is much to learn and people spend years improving. Murray Ogilvie at High Country Outfitters has guided the local rivers and internationally, and if you need to improve your casting, Murray can conduct lessons at any time of the year. Stop in at the High Country Outfitters shop and talk to the staff about what flies are performing the best during your stay, plus any other information required.
Just like your first day on skis, you will remember forever, and so too the first fish you catch. The beauty of winter school holidays is the kids can have the best of both worlds. Ski in the morning, catch fish in the afternoon. The snow season is not just for fun on the mountains, there are trout in the lake awaiting you to throw in a line. And for more good news, during winter the trout are high on the surface and closer to the edges which makes for great fishing. Just like a day on snow, you may need to dress warm, wear your beanie and your jacket, but the days are mostly warmer in Jindabyne that the alpine resorts. Talk to Brian and Lakeside Lures and Tackle opposite the Thredbo turnoff in Jindabyne and he can kit you out with all the gear. The shop rents rods and reel, and can you supply you with the bait plus all the best tips of where to find and more importantly how to catch the fish. The rivers are closed during winter, so it is lake fishing only and Lake Jindabyne and Lake Eucumbene are
◼ HAPPY: Leon from Cammeray catching his first fish. perfect locations to fish. “The water temperatures are down, so there is more surface activity with the trout,” said Brian.

Yarrangobilly Precinct Adventure THE Yarrangobilly Caves is a bucket list adventure in the Kosciuszko National Park and a place everyone should visit. Naturally the spectacular caves are the centre attraction, but don’t think for one moment that is all you will see. Nature abounds at every turn here in the valley and there is much exploring indulgence to encounter. As with anything these days it is preferred to book in advance to secure a cave adventure. Tickets can be booked online and additional tours will be made available each day, depending on the walk in demand. Guided tours available are the Jersey Cave at 2.30pm and Jillabenan Cave at 10am. Plus of course there is the self-guided South Glory Cave where you can proceed at your own pace in this spectacular high ceiling cave. Inside the caves it truly is another world, and when you consider it has taken millions of years for caves to be formed there is history in the making as you watch each droplet of water drip from the ceiling. You will soon be up to speed on your stalagmite and stalactite terminology. The stalagmite rises from the floor and the stalactite hangs from the ceiling and when they meet, they form pillars. The Yarrangobilly Caves House is a grand
heritage listed building that has been meticulously restored and demands centre stage attention as you proceed into the caves precinct. For those with hiking interests, the Yarrangobilly River walk follows the meandering flowing waters for a peaceful hike. At its southern end you will be surprised to find a fantastic thermal pool where the temperature resides at a constant 27 degrees. Fed by a natural spring, bring the swimmers even in winter time and take the plunge. The pool has a BBQ area or pack your own lunch, as no matter what the season, you would be hard pressed to find a more idyllic outdoor dining venue. Overall, the caves require a full day of your attention to see it all so factor in driving times and road conditions when you are travelling. Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct At the end of June the Snowy Mountains Special Activation (SAP) precinct Draft Master Plan will have been released for public exhibition. The draft SAP will be on public exhibition for 45 days. By STEVE CUFF At the end of June the Snowy Mountains Special Activation (SAP) precinct Draft Master Plan will have been released for public exhibition. The draft SAP will be on public exhibition for 45 days. THE future of the SAP area, Jindabyne, Thredbo, Charlotte Pass, Perisher Valley and the associated areas of Kosciuszko National Park will be in the hands of residents and visitors alike. When people look back in 10, 15 or 40 years time, they will realise that this document will have been the most important part of Jindabyne and the resorts’ history and will set its future. When the Snowy Scheme changed Jindabyne in the late 60’s it was a small town. So much has grown since then and if we look at those changes through the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s to the year 2021, most will agree that council and planners were responsible for adding on sections here and sections there, one piece at a time. You would agree it could have been done better, but at the time it was not entirely
their fault. There was lack of planning and foresight. Now is your chance to set the future up for the following generations. Our local member and Deputy Premier has been a driving force behind the project, the NSW Government investing over $2 million just for the draft plan to be created. There is still work to do, and we should all jump on board. There are huge positives to come out of this for the SAP area with an investment of over $200 million. “The Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP) is a once in a lifetime opportunity, that will create jobs, attract businesses and investors, support local industries and fuel economic development across the Snowy Mountains,” said Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro John Barilaro. “I’m excited to be able to share the draft master plan with the community in the coming weeks (end of June) and I encourage everyone to provide their feedback during the planned 45-day exhibition period this winter.” “This is a bold, 40-year vision for the

The Resorts - The SAP Future ONE of the key areas of the SAP will be what changes will eventuate in the Kosciuszko National Park resorts of Thredbo and Perisher. Thredbo Resort operate under a head lease agreement and act as the landlord of the village and mountain area. They still need to have approvals, but their lease structure is much better than what transpires in Perisher Valley. Hence, they have seen more development over the past 30 years. Businesses in Perisher Valley report to the National Park, who are their landlord. In recent years there has been discussions and negotiations with Vail Resorts, owner of Perisher Resort to see if both parties could reach an agreement as to who operates the head lease. These negotiations have now ceased while the SAP is revealed. It is not sure if they will ever continue. There has been no development in Perisher Valley in over 20 years. Perisher Resort have invested in their lift structure, but National Parks have either not attracted investors or made it too hard for them. The growth of the snow industry has accelerated and what is required is more accommodation and parking. What needs to happen is both resorts need more beds, Perisher Valley in particular. Let’s hope the master plan will address all these issues, the main one being who is in charge of Perisher Valley’s future. It is unsure if this SAP will address that particular question on the head lease. THE DEPARTMENT OF REGIONAL NSW ISSUED A STATEMENT TO ACCOMPANY THIS EDITION. “With the natural environment the Snowy Mountains’ most precious asset, all proposed development will aim to leave a minimal footprint on the environment and will prioritise sustainability and preserve a strong connection to country,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Regional NSW. “An Ecologically Sustainable Development report and fact sheet outlining the precinct’s key environmental themes and strategies regarding future development is available now to view on the NSW
The past 18 months has been incredibly tough for the Snowy Mountains but looking around at communities like Jindabyne and Berridale right now, the future looks exciting. I’m hearing on the ground that visitor numbers and accommodation bookings are well up on last year and shops, restaurants and cafes are bustling. Locals are telling me that this is going to be the best ski season we’ve ever had. The Snowy Mountains is positioned to become the Southern Hemisphere’s own version of Aspen, thanks to the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct.

Planning website.” “The plan also explores improved tourist experiences for Kosciuszko National Park, including increased accommodation and recreation facilities in Thredbo, Perisher and Charlotte Pass and improved hiking, riding and skiing facilities, without disturbing the natural environment. “National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has prepared an amendment to the Kosciuszko National Park Plan of Management, which will be on exhibition during the same time as the draft master plan. “The Plan of Management provides a framework to guide the long-term management of the National Park.” “The draft master plan also includes plans for additional housing and accommodation for residents, seasonal workers and tourists, along with plans for services and community infrastructure for Jindabyne and the region, to cater for a growing population over the next 40 years.” “A Social Infrastructure report and a Housing and Accommodation report have helped to guide the planning decisions behind the draft master plan. “Additional social needs reports and fact sheets focusing on tourism, sport infrastructure and economic development are also available to view now and we encourage the community to read the available information to help inform submissions during the exhibition period. “ These reports are available to view on the NSW planning website.
It is a bold 40-year vision for the Snowy Mountains and will shape future investment in the region. I’m excited to be able to share the draft master plan with the community in the coming weeks and I strongly encourage locals to have their say. While we are looking ahead at the future of the Snowy Mountains, it is exciting to see investment already taking place. I welcome the Federal Government’s announcement of $10 million to deliver Stage 4 of the Snowies Iconic Walk.
◼ BUSY: Thredbo have had ongoing year year round increased visitation. PHOTO Thredbo Resort Within the master plan will be projected growth for population and projected declines in snowfalls in the next 40 years. These factors are all relevant and the future is important. But the master plan needs to address the carrying capacity of Perisher Valley and Thredbo as a priority now. Any weekend in July and August will tell you we have a problem. If more people were staying on the mountain, part of this problem would be addressed. In late July and August the NSW Government will be trialing a mass transit bus option. This trial will provide consultants with more information to help alleviate the traffic issues on busy weekends. People will be able to catch the bus to the resorts. More details to follow. Your say is important to not only look at Jindabyne, but the resort areas and what is planned for Kosciuszko National Park. The 11 kilometre trail from Perisher Valley to Bullocks Flat will complete the 55-kilometre multi day walk experience, linking the walk to premium accommodation options and further transport connections. Over the last ten years, the NSW Government has invested more than $38.8 million to deliver improvements, extensions and create new walking and mountain biking trails across the Snowy Mountains. This additional funding will further help in showcasing our iconic landscape and ensure that the region cements itself as Australia’s premier adventure destination. The Snowy Mountains is no longer just a winter destination, it is the destination of choice year round. The 2019/20 bushfires and last year’s COVID-19 restrictions saw our tourism industry take a huge hit but investments like this will ensure our region bounces back stronger and better than ever. We are creating quality international standard tracks for people to enjoy for years to come. The investment in our tourism sector cements Jindabyne and the broader Snowy Mountains as a one-of-a-kind attraction. There is no other place in the world like our beautiful Snowy Mountains. As our region continues to grow, we will continue to reap the benefits and I am confident we will continue to see new projects emerge and record investment continue. monaro@parliament.nsw.gov.au www.johnbarilaro.com.au 213 Crawford St, (PO Box 998) Queanbeyan NSW 2620 Ph: 02 6299 4899 - Fax: 02 6297 9998 JohnBarilaroMP

^ġłøÕïƘłĀ̧̽̽¤ĝĀ̽ ̽AŽŶŽũĀ THE draft master plan will offer guidelines, recommendations and the vision of what the future could look like. Much of this information is just that, information. It recommends possible scenarios of what the consultants, with input from the community over the past three years think is required for the future of the town. They have outlined projected growth rates, and for the master plan to reach its objective certain criteria needs to be achieved along the journey. Note though, this is a 40 year master plan. The initial investment we see via the NSW Government will mainly be in infrastructure to set better foundations for growth. This would then be followed by private investment. No funding has been committed to any project or development yet. The money will be allocated to set projects via Business Cases which will run parallel to the draft master plan. Once a Business Case is presented, it needs to be viable and passed by treasury as worthy of investment before they commit any funds. Therefore, it is imperatively important to offer feedback. If you think a project is fantastic, submit that feedback. If you think a project would be a waste of time, submit that feedback as well. The NSW Government will be accumulating your feedback, along with other information to make their final master plan decisions in later 2021. You can only provide feedback via a written submission.
HERE are some key topics for Jindabyne that will be visible and also important. SOUTHERN CONNECTOR There is a proposed new road that will deviate approximately from the tip road entrance near the Jindabyne Dam Wall, around behind Highview Estate, link with the Barry Way and then continue on behind Essential Energy and back onto Kosciusko Road at Widows Creek. This road will be called the Sothern Connector and its main aim will be: 1. It will divert “unwanted” traffic from Kosciuszko Road in Jindabyne. 2. Diverting traffic will allow the CBD area of the town to grow and be better connected to the lake in future years. 3. Kosciuszko Road through Jindabyne is proposed to revert to single lane either way allowing for wider footpaths, bike path, and be more pedestrian friendly. One of the key targets for the SAP is to make Jindabyne a year round destination in its own right. Not just winter. To achieve this goal, the town needs to be devoid of excess heavy traffic.
◼
Concept illustration of Kosciuszko Rd - opportunities exist for more onstreet parking, cycling infrastructure and landscaping while retaining existing kerbs and alignment.
◼ Concept illustration of proposed Town Square upgrade - the proposal not only provides public spaces for passive use and small events but connects the town centre past Memorial Hall and across Kosciuszko Road to Lake Jindabyne To qualify in tourists’ eyes as a must visit destination, Jindabyne would need to improve in many areas. Currently it has potential but is still on the lower rungs of the ladder. The town still relies heavily on the Kosciuszko National Park in summer months. WHAT WILL LIKELY CHANGE ̋̽bÕĴĀ̽AŋũĀŭĝŋũĀ̧̽̽ŶĝĀ̽ĀƗŶĀłøĀø̽ĔŋũĀŭĝŋũĀ̽ line from Curiosity Rocks to East Jindabyne will be improved, revamped, landscaped and be a huge attraction. ̋̽ òŶġƑġŶġĀŭ̽ƒġķķ̽Ėũŋƒ̽ƒġŶĝ̽Õ̽ťŋŶĀłŶġÕķ̽łĀƒ̽ dedicated mountain bike park, and potential water activity park on the lake. Cafes and restaurants would be on the foreshore. ̋̽¤ĝĀ̽ƒÕƘ̽ƒĀ̽ĿŋƑĀ̽ġł̽Ŷŋƒł̽ĔũŋĿ̽nŽĖĖĀŶ̲ŭ̽ Crossing to the Town Centre will be more pedestrian friendly. Select roads could close to accommodate. Businesses like the Mitre 10 trade as an example would be relocated. ̋̽¤ĝĀ̽^ġłøÕïƘłĀ̽ ĀłŶũÕķ̽ òĝŋŋķ̽ƒġķķ̽ĿŋƑĀ̽
to the Jindabyne Education Campus at the Sport and Recreation Centre with a brand new school. ̋̽¤ĝĀ̽ťŋťŽķÕŶġŋł̽ƒŋŽķø̽łĀĀø̽Ŷŋ̽Ėũŋƒ̽ along with the change. This would mean more housing which has already been earmarked. New subdivisions will eventuate. ̋̽ÀĀ̽ŭĝŋŽķø̽ƑŋŶĀ̽łŋ̽Ŷŋ̽ÕłƘ̽ĝġĖģ̂ũġŭĀ̽ style of buildings in and around the existing town and lake foreshore areas. Any new developments in town should have caveats around providing multiple parking spaces. These and many more topics would need to be addressed. Have your say.
