Lauren Parker, Para-triathlete and Australian Commonwealth Games Representative
Lauren Parker was born to be a champion. National swimming title holder at age 14. Champion triathlete and professional ironman by age 24. And then, in an instant, her world was turned upside down. After coming off her bike during a freak training accident, Lauren was given the gut-wrenching news that she may never walk again. But that didn’t stop her from chasing her dreams. Nor did enduring months of gruelling spinal rehab. Or learning how to adjust to life in a wheelchair. In April this year, less than 12 months after her accident, Lauren will be defying the odds once again as she goes for gold as part of the Australian Commonwealth Games Team. At Red Energy, owned by the mighty Snowy Hydro, we know a thing or two about hard work, grit and giving it your all. That’s why we’re proud to get behind Lauren Parker.

The First Word MOUNTAIN adventures never stop here in the Snowies, it’s just the seasons that dictate our mode of transport or our preferred implements of choice. Snow enthusiasts have now packed away their skis and snowboards and summer is taking its grip. Keen mountain bikers already have hundreds of kilometres under their belt, the road cyclists are starting to arrive, and hikers are dusting of their boots and planning their summer escapades. Fisherman are stalking the rivers and lakes, paddleboarders are fine tuning their stroke and while the water is still cool the lakes are seeing plenty of attention from boats and swimmers. The alpine region of Australia has certainly been on the outdoor enthusiasts’ radar in recent years with the warmer months seeing holiday makers keen to see what we already know. There is more to it than you think here in the Snowy Mountains.
Ŷ
In our summer holiday edition we present a plethora of vacation ideas and stories that will have you thinking about where to go and what to do. Plus be sure to view the calendar as your holiday may also coincide with a great event. We could write endless stories on great mountain escapes but in a nutshell the mountains come alive during summer. So, no matter when you visit there is a mountain of fun already happening. The Snowy Mountains is a vast area so don’t be shy to circumnavigate the Kosciuszko National Park or venture to all the neighbouring towns on the Monaro. You will find that each town is different in its own unique way and offer plenty of options for the eager holiday maker. Business owners in the region also deserve a special mention for not only expertise in their chosen work, but for how this all helps showcase the very best of the Snowy Mountains and welcome our visiting guests.

The Wildbrumby Distillery crew were in Melbourne recently where they were one of an invited 12 businesses representing NSW in the Fine Food Australia Expo. Regular visitors already know of their fine fare, but now the rest of Australia and the World will also want to sample their award-winning schnapps, vodka and gin. In the Far South Coast Regional Business Awards, congratulations to local winners TRC Tourism who won two gongs, Regional Business of the Year and Excellence in Export. Eucumbene Trout Farm won the Excellence in Small Business category and Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa winning Excellence in Business. Enjoy summer in the snowies...

Guided Segway tours are very popular or a paddle in the lake is a great way to unwind and spend quality family time with the kids. Several free activities are included with accommodation packages. For the more adventurous, book an E-bike tour or guided alpine hike where knowledgeable guides venture with you into the alpine for stunning views of the Snowy Mountains and glacial lakes. The sunset E-bike tour to Mt Kosciuszko is one of the best adventures and with the aid of the E-bike, it is hardly strenuous. The downhill return journey from the top of Australia to Charlotte Pass lookout under headlamp is also a thrill. E-bike tours are also available for the longer Cascade Hut tour and new this year is a three hut tour that comprises visits to Horsecamp, White Rivers and Schlink Huts. To kickstart their warmer months, the resort will have the fabulous Beccy Cole performing on November 4 with Lake Crackenback as a perfect backdrop for the occasion. Alpine Wildflower Season
Ŷ
IMPRESSIVE: A large one kilometre by half a kilometre field of Billy Button wildflowers under Mt Kosciuszko. All photos Mike Edmondson.
Once the snow starts to melt in the Snowy Mountains alpine region, a sea of colour emerges as the alpine wildflowers bloom By Mike Edmondson SUMMER in the Snowy Mountains is wonderful in many forms, but nothing compares to the sea of colour that the Alpine Wildflowers exhibit once they decide it is their time to bloom. Dormant under a blanket of snow during winter, once they sense the warmth and sunlight starting to filter through their snow layer they cannot wait to breathe new life into their environment. From late September to November small wildflowers start growing transforming the alpine into an adventurer’s paradise. Fields of fragile, brightly coloured wildflowers bloom from spring right through until February. At the peak of the wildflower season from mid-December to mid-January there are often big fields of wildflowers flowering all at once above 1850 metres. For bushwalkers, photographers and holiday makers the fresh alpine air, clean streams, cool glacial lakes and unique alpine wildflower bloom offer a fresh exciting environment to explore during late spring and summer. Alpine Wildflowers are unique to the Snowy Mountains with various species growing in the high treeless areas inside Kosciuszko National Park. These unique plant types have adapted to the many different microclimates within the region, each spectacular in their own right. Twenty one alpine plant species are exclusively found in Kosciuszko National Park, with a further four species listed as threatened. Here are some of my favourite
wildflowers and locations where you can easily view them. SILVER SNOW DAISIES The popular walk from Thredbo to Mt Kosciuszko will afford many sightings adjacent to the walking path. Likewise hiking from Charlotte Pass to Kosciuszko and past Seaman’s Hutt will offer fields of wildflowers. The side of Mt Guthrie and the boardwalk adjacent to Charlotte Pass lookout are also popular viewing locations. Silver snow daisies are visible from early December to late January. BILLY-BUTTONS Many people’s favourites, the billybuttons can be found in smaller fields amongst other species such as the silver snow daisies in early to mid-January. They are visible on many of the walks including the walk to Blue Lake and Carruthers Peak or the longer Main Range walk both from Charlotte Pass. The Mt Kosciuszko walking track from Thredbo is also a viewing area and they are easy to spot with their vibrant yellow button. ANEMONE BUTTERCUP This is a rarer special large flowering wildflower which was listed threatened in 2001. The best sightings are from mid to late November in environments with late melting snow; on south to east facing, steep grassy slopes, or rocky crevices, or short alpine herb fields. On the Main Range walk above Lake Albina, above Blue Lake beside rocky cliffs and in more remote areas towards the summit of Mt Tate and on the slopes of Abbott Peak and Mt Townsend. ALPINE SUNRAY FLOWERS From late December to mid-January
these flowers are best sighted along the rocky ridge tops on the great divide. The Thredbo walking track to Mt Kosciuszko, the walk to Carruthers Peak or the longer Main Range hike will afford good viewings. The Main Range track offers great wildflower viewings plus superb views across the Australian Alps but is a long 22km loop from Charlotte Pass via Blue Lake and takes approximately eight hours for experienced bushwalkers.

Cycling laps JINDABYNE Cycling Club (JCC) launched a brand-new initiative in October with the introduction of a 100-lap event at the Sport and Recreation 400m bitumen oval cycling track. On their first evening 30 enthusiastic cyclists attended and were guided by club coach Karen Forman on how the event would operate. The theory is the mid-week event will be an ideal training venue to gain strength for other rides and all in a safe controlled location. The afternoon also involves a junior development program which will initially be skills and fun for all kids in a safe environment, but also leading to the formation of a JCC junior team to train for racing junior tours. Club members are keen road cyclists with regular Sunday rides and it is hoped the event may also interest other visiting cyclists who are in town. Sport and Recreation have come on board as a sponsor and are offering free use of the track and can also provide special accommodation deals for visiting riders who would like to train with the group on Wednesdays, or on JCC’s regular Sunday road ride.

Join as a volunteer ONE of the biggest events on Jindabyne’s calendar, the L’Étape Australia cycling race will attract more than 4000 riders. With such a big event comes a plethora of logistics where organisers require people to assist. L’Étape Australia have put out the call for volunteers who can assist on either Friday November 30, Saturday December 1 or both days. In total they require 243 volunteers to fill a variety of roles including registration pack collection, food zones, bag drops, medal distribution at the finish line and road marshals. With the start and finish in Jindabyne this year the majority will be required around the Jindabyne area. Those who have volunteered in previous years have loved their involvement in the event, which helps the overall event success and the community. Volunteers also feel a part of the event and the competitors have acknowledged they really do appreciate all the effort this group contribute to the event. Team leaders are also required which is ideal for residents as they are much more familiar with the surroundings.
VOLUNTEER & CHEER!
Should you be interested to volunteer you first need to register via the L’Étape Australia website (see ad below). Once you have registered, volunteer co-ordinator Jennifer will contact you closer to the event for final appointments and more information on your role. Volunteers are supplied with t-shirt and hat uniform, lunch, a certificate of appreciation, exclusive BBQ with the race ambassadors and access to the volunteers lounge in the event village.

Atmosphere of L’Étape By Steve Cuff CYCLISTS will be excited about the third instalment of the L’Étape Australia on December 1 with this year’s format seeing the event starting and finishing in Jindabyne. The L’Étape is an amateur road cycling event conducted in a professional environment on closed roads and supported by the Tour de France. The event has two different distances, the Race at 170km long and the Ride at 108km and overall is expected to attract more than 4000 riders on the day. Combined with family, friends and entourages the total visitor numbers will swell to nearly 7000 people. This year organisers have the race village situated for picturesque Banjo Paterson Park on the foreshore of Lake Jindabyne. This alone will attract huge interest from enthusiastic residents who have supported this race from its debut year in 2016 decorating streets with yellow colour and bikes. Neighbouring towns of Berridale and Dalgety where the riders pass through have also been great supporters of the event by decorating their streets. People cheer riders and ring bells at
various sections of the route in what past competitors have all described as sensational. The colour, flair and enthusiasm of the supporters has created an atmosphere like the Tour de France. On Friday all riders will register at the race village collecting their bibs. The village will have a festive atmosphere and be perfect for viewers who want to see the start and finish of race and then be entertained while they wait. Jindabyne’s country music star Brad Cox has been announced as a headline act for Saturday and popular local band The Hip Replacements playing on Friday. On Saturday the 170km Race will start at 6.30 am and the 108km Ride will start at 8.30am at Banjo Paterson Park. The start alone is sure to be a massive spectacle as competitors assemble. From a competitor’s viewpoint, staying in Jindabyne and rolling down to the start from your accommodation will be welcomed and a smoother transition to start your day. When riders finish they can venture straight to the village. Competitors in the 170km Race will ride via Eucumbene Road, Rocky Plain, Berridale, Dalgety and to Jindabyne. They will then turn left from the Barry Way before embarking on the Col de Kosciuszko climb

This is a prized jersey but for many they will just want more revenge on the Col de Beloka, a 3.5km climb at 9.9% average gradient and in one section 13.2% gradient. The Col de Kosciuszko is a 23.5km section at average 4.4% gradient, and riders will welcome the return leg from Perisher which is less taxing on the body. L’Étape to sparkle on Lake Jindabyne By Steve Cuff IN three short years L’Étape Australia has stamped its position on the cycling calendar as one of the premier events. Riding on closed roads, having cycling royalty Chris Froome as an ambassador in its ďŹ rst two years and capturing the imagination of the local community has all added to the occasion. This year two new ambassadors, Mathew Hayman and Amanda Spratt have been mentoring riders with updates on the L’Étape website on preparation and the intricacies of racing. Spratt was a recent silver medallist in the UCI World Road Cycling Championships and Hayman a former Pairs Roubaix winner and their knowledge is tremendous for riders. THE RACE AND RIDE Let’s face it, this is no walk in the park and the L’Étape is just like a stage of the Tour de France. The Race at 170km will test even the best and while the Ride is shorter at 108km, it has many challenges. Most competitors have signed up for the Race, so this indicates they love the challenging mountain terrain and truly want to test themselves. And what better environment than
the Snowy Mountains to compete. This year organisers have it all spot on with the village, start and ďŹ nish all in Jindabyne plus SBS commentator Matthew Keenan will be back with his expert views. SBS will again produce a highlight real for later viewing. This year’s event will outdo previous years and be the best by far. SPECTATOR VANTAGE POINTS There are many great positions to watch the race even considering the rolling road closures. Jindabyne’s Town Centre, Banjo Patterson Park and opposite Banjo Paterson Inn are perfect as the mass of riders depart. Tyrolean residents can gather at top of Rainbow Drive, East Jindabyne residents from Snowy Valley service station. Property owners along Eucumbene, Rocky Plain and Middlingbank Roads can watch from their driveways or linking roads. Berridale will be the ďŹ rst main food zone and ideal for viewing along Jindabyne Road, Myack Street and then for people on Dalgety Road, your own driveway or linking roads. At Dalgety the best views will be the right turn onto the Dalgety Bridge and for

properties west of Snowy River all roads leading to Snowy River Way have been great congregations for group BBQ’s. Some people make the trip to the top of Col de Beloka, but you are locked in for the day. Lakewood Estate residents gather at Lakewood Drive and for riders entering Jindabyne, the Barry Way roundabout has great action. One riders start to ďŹ nish the Banjo Paterson Park ďŹ nish line is best to cheer them home. The L’Étape Australia village will be the place to be once riders start to ďŹ nish. Snowy 2.0 awaits key decision
BUSINESS DIRECTORY
Snowy Hydro board members will be required to make some decisive decisions regarding their Snowy 2.0 project in December. DURING a recent information evening in Cooma, Kieran Cusack, Project Director for Snowy 2.0 outlined some of the finer points of the proposed $4.5 billion project. Mr Cusack indicated that in December the board needs to make a key decision about spending $4.5 billion dollars which will essentially come down to the final submissions from the two main contractors, civil and electrical and mechanical. Civil works will take up about 80 percent of the main contract cost which is building the structure and the remaining 20 percent from electrical and mechanical which is predominately installing the generating gear associated with the power station. These tenders have been ongoing and will be submitted by early October for the electrical and mechanical and then early November for the civil tender. “By the time we get to December we will have pricing from both of them, and then we will obviously submit that to our board which
goes into the final investment decision,” said Mr Cusack. “So that’s the point at which if we get the go ahead that is when our exploratory work will commence.” Snowy Hydro recently submitted an Environment Impact Statement (EIS) for an access road and the exploratory works associated with tunnelling down to the proposed underground power station site. These works were expected to start in December with up to four months allocated for the access road. Mr Cusack said this exploratory works is purely to tunnel into the cavern area to get a clear understanding of the geotechnical aspects. While it is all systems go from a planning point of view and Mr Cusack indicating they were confident all will go ahead as planned, it does come down to the independent board of directors summing up the overall project costs and ensuring it is all feasible. At this stage of the process we are still in the
During the meeting attendees were also made aware of the Business Directory, if they did not already know, which is where businesses can submit their details and qualifications via the business opportunities link. Snowy Hydro have indicated that the main contractors will require various services, large and small from subcontractors. The Business Directory is a list of all businesses that will be forwarded to the main contractors where they can identify what services are available in the region.

very early stages with first power not expected until 2024. Snowy Hydro have also stated they will fund the whole project themselves internally and are currently negotiating funding with banks and their own reserves.
Mr Cusack stated Snowy Hydro are making it very clear to the main contractors that they want to have local content and involvement in the project. Any business with a service to offer should register their details at www.snowyhydro.com.au.

pleasant surprises. Many lodges are based in the northern end of Kosciuszko, an area of hiking trails, waterfalls, unbound scenery and Yarrangobilly Caves. The award winning heritage 1917 Caves House, 1901 East and West Wing and Lyrebird Cottage are three excellent choices at Yarrangobilly. At Caves House you can stay at either of the wing sections or the house itself, all which have been immaculately restored to original condition. Luxurious Caves House can accommodate 24 guests and will bring you back into an era of glamorous style with grand tall ceilings and where an afternoon on the balcony with the wildlife is far more engaging than modern technology. The 1901 East and West Wing offers cosy self-contained heritage accommodation with
nine bedrooms and a maximum of 14 guests. It is ideal for large groups to book out the entire wing. For your own private hideaway, you will fall in love with Lyrebird Cottage, a two bedroom luxury eco-cottage set in amongst the wilderness. This is the perfect romantic getaway and is stylishly furnished. All accommodation at Caves House and Lyrebird is self-catering so plan ahead and bring all supplies and know there is no mobile reception. Wolgal Hut is a classic stone and timber comfy lodge near historic Kiandra and is perfect to explore the Kiandra ruins or visit nearby Cabraumurra, Three Mile Dam or scenic drives. With an abundance of trout fishing in nearby streams or Eucumbene River, your options are unlimited. Has three bedrooms, sleeps eight and suited to small groups or two families. Currango Homestead offers heritage ecoaccommodation with adventure and style as you venture away from the crowds to your own retreat ready to explore. It has four bedrooms and sleeps maximum nine guests and is set on the high plains of the park. Daffodil Cottage offer two bedrooms in rustic heritage accommodation and was once the overseer’s residence for historic Currango Homestead. It offers a glimpse of times on a pastoral station and is ideal if you want to bring your own horse. The Pines Cottage makes up a trifecta in the Currango precinct and is a perfect choice
for exploring the high country with fishing, mountain biking and hiking. It suits multiple families and has six bedrooms and sleeps 16 guests. Creel Lodge offers luxurious accommodation at Waste Point and is set in bushland overlooking Lake Jindabyne. With proximity to hiking, mountain bike trails and the snow resorts of Perisher and Thredbo in winter, it is a true mountain hideaway. Numbananga Lodge at Smiggins Holes affords great location to hike Mt Kosciuszko, Blue Lake or Rainbow Lake and offers peace and quiet away from the snow season. Bring the road bike or mountain bike and explore. Three bedrooms and maximum of six guests.

Appreciation behind the scenes WHEN new infrastructure and trail development occur, it is rightful that government and councils receive recognition for providing funding and ensuring the project is completed. What is not often told is how these trails are maintained and the contribution local businesses make behind the scenes. The Jindabyne trail network is possible due to thousands of hours from dedicated
volunteer and the incredibly generous support from Jindabyne Trail Stewardship (JTS) partnerships. Whether it be in-kind or financial, individuals and businesses contribute massively behind the scenes. They do so not for glory but to aid JTS to purchase tools and equipment or to look after volunteers on maintenance days by way of food/drink and spot prizes, including massages and

Jindabyne is a relatively small town but has a great sense of community. With many outdoor enthusiasts living here there is a great appreciation of the work all the volunteers do.
The message here is that building new trails and capital funding is great but why maintenance of trails and funding for maintenance is so VITAL for the ongoing success of the trails. The community asset used by so many adds significantly to tourism and therefore generates hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to the town. Perhaps next time you use the trail network, give thanks to those businesses that contribute to the ongoing maintenance of it and possibly consider helping yourself. Busking Championships now weekend event Cooma will be alive with the sounds of music across the weekend of November 3-4 as the annual busking championships extends across two days. TALENTED musicians will be lining Cooma’s streets this November as they vie for not only Saturday’s Cooma regional championships, but also the Australian National Busking Championships (ANBC) on the Sunday. The busking championships have been growing each year, including regional events since it was established in 2012 by founder Allan Spencer. Mr Spencer said the regional competitions have been designed to be part of the grass roots national network of low cost music festivals that “Encourage and develop career pathways for performing artists.” This year total prizemoney has increased
to $12,000 with artists endeavouring to win their share in the various categories. Snowy Mountains Magazine are pleased to have also contributed to the prizemoney for the first time this year. In other great news for the event organisers said they have received a $10,000 grant from the Boco Rock Wind Farm community fund. Spectating is free plus you can also help buskers win the People’s Choice Award by awarding busking votes. The votes can be purchased from the information desk in Centennial Park. You can also obtain a full daily schedule from the desk. As spectators wander around Cooma’s CBD watching different acts, you give busking votes to favourite artists. Additionally, you can also give tips to the buskers in the true tradition of buskers who play on the street for money. This money goes straight into their own pockets. All winners on Saturday plus other regional event winners will perform on Sunday.
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 3 - ANBC COOMA REGIONAL BUSKING CHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday will have a similar format to previous years, with busking performances timetabled during the day and then the finals concert on stage at 3pm in Centennial Park. Prizes are awarded to three age categories, (Open Adult, Secondary and Primary School Age), Best Band, Best School Group, Blues Music Award, Special Judges Awards and the popular People’s Choice Awards. The first place getters in each of the age categories on Saturday will be invited back for Sunday to compete in the ANBC National Grand Final. SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4 - ANBC NATIONAL GRAND FINAL First place getters from all the seven 2018 ANBC Regional Championships in Stanthorpe, Ballarat, Narooma, Noosa, Peak Hill, Gundagai and Cooma will be invited to busk on Sunday morning. All the competitors that have qualified to busk on Sunday will receive a cash prize. Nine competitors, three from each age categories, will then be selected to perform for prizes in the National Grand Final Concert to be held at 1:00 pm in Centennial Park.

Buskers that have qualified for Sunday are welcome to also busk on Saturday. They can receive cash tips, sell CDs and merchandise, however as they will be guaranteed a share of the prizes on Sunday, they will not be able to win extra prizes on Saturday. Australian Business Award for Perisher Perisher have won the Community Contribution at the Australian Business Awards and received well deserved recognition for the support they offer the community via their EpicPromise day.
PERISHER have received the award in recognition of the 2017 EpicPromise day where 133 of their staff members participated in community projects in Jindabyne, collectively working 715 hours on the day. Perisher staff worked alongside Jindabyne Trail Stewardship, Jindabyne Sailing Club and Jindabyne Nippers to make many improvements along the lakeside including new mountain bike trails connecting the township of Jindabyne to the popular Hatchery Bay trails, general maintenance work, cleaning up the Jindabyne Nippers beach sprint area and improving the boat ramps for the Jindabyne Sailing Club. Perisher also partnered with the Rob Kneller Youth Foundation to install signage and relocate several holes on the Jindabyne Disk Golf Course. EpicPromise is Vail Resorts commitment to local communities, youth and the environment. The program was first introduced in 2016 and over the past two years Perisher staff have worked alongside local community groups on Melbourne Cup morning. The group go about their allocated duties until lunchtime where they then attend a group BBQ. Many of the Perisher staff are also keen outdoor enthusiasts and participate in many of the mountain biking and lake activities. So, they are very proud to be helping their town and community and there is huge effort put in on the morning. Pete Brulisauer, Perisher’s Chief Operating Officer said last year, “EpicPromise Day is all about getting out

into the community with our staff and giving back. It is the community we live in and love, it’s a wonderful day.” Perisher liaise with Snowy Monaro Shire Council and Jindabyne Trail Stewardship for approvals and planning the day so that maintenance and other important projects can be achieved. The Perisher EpicPromise day has been well received across the community, with all projects delivering outcomes that would otherwise not have been realised due to funding and staffing barriers faced by the community groups and the Snowy Monaro Regional Council. Alannah Dickeson, Recreation Planner at Snowy Monaro Regional Council said, “Everything we are doing
with Perisher is going to be a major improvement to these areas and a great addition and asset for our community to use”. This year the work force will be out again on Melbourne Cup morning where they will be attending to maintenance on various mountain bike trails around Jindabyne. Matt Murtagh from the Jindabyne Trail Stewardship said, “Perisher as one business contribute to Jindabyne in a massive way and it just shows what great things can be done with numbers and planning. We are extremely grateful not just as the stewardship, but on behalf of the Jindabyne community.” During winter Perisher are one of the
biggest employers in the region and the resort contribute hugely to the wider region as a main driver of tourism in the Snowy Mountains. For 2019 they will be installing a new $4 million Leichhardt chair which will be welcomed by their visitors and they continue to invest not only in their resort but also in the community via days such as the EpicPromise. Perisher and Vail Resorts management should be applauded for creating such a valuable community driven EpicPromise day. You can find more information about Perisher and their EpicPromise at their Resort Info link on website www.perisher. com.au.

Beach time on Lake Jindabyne
Ŷ
EXCITED: Have a family beach holiday on Lake Jindabyne this summer and enjoy everything the lake has plus more. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff
It is regarded as Australia’s Alpine Playground and Jindabyne has everything for your next summer holiday, including beaches. DRIVING into Jindabyne the stunning lake glistens in the sunshine and at the same time leaves a lasting first impression. But don’t for once think of Lake Jindabyne purely as scenic, it has much to offer each summer. Whilst it is known as a great snow town in winter and is the base for all your alpine activities, let’s take a sneak peak of everything this beautiful lake has to offer. The snow melt happens each year but this summer the lake is not likely to be full to the brim. This is an absolute delight for beach goers as it presents an abundance of beach options to please everyone. You only need to glance around the shoreline and see that sandy beaches are scattered across the lake, most
within easy access. The added beauty of these beaches for families is most have a shallow entrance to the lake, ideal for kids to enjoy some water play and all the associated fun that accompanies any beach holiday. Breakout the umbrellas, beach towels and buckets and spades, build some sand castles and enjoy a summer holiday without the added worry of big surf, rips and even sharks. The lake is full of fish, but they are only the friendly trout that anglers seek to lure and are tasty as well. The little kids will love their lake time from running along the foreshore in ankle deep water, creating their engineering feats with sandcastles and just having a blast. The
weather in summer is warm, so a dive into the lake is ideal to cool down. Plus, with the picnic basket stocked full, it is a great day. Just pack the sunscreen. There are two caravan parks located right on the lake, so a camping or caravan holiday at either Discovery Parks or Jindabyne Holiday Park is a great choice. Plus, there is an abundance of accommodation in town to cater for all budgets. At the Snowline centre you can hire everything from Sacred Ride including kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and sailing boats if you desire to explore on water activities. The Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club have regular sailing on Wednesday and Saturday if you have your own boat, and the lake is a hive of activity in summer with water skiing and fisherman. While access is easy to the obvious spots, if you have a boat be sure to venture to a remote beach and have it all to yourself. The
AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATION IN THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS The Jindy Inn is central to town and located only 200 metres from local shops, restaurants and cafes. We offer an on-site guest only lounge/bar/cafe that serves afternoon tea and après drinks. Guests also have access to free Wi-Fi, guest kitchen, drying room and newly renovated bathrooms. boat ramp is also undergoing an upgrade for better access. Everything revolves around the lake including the bike path in town that follows the lake’s edge. For mountain bikers you can ride east or west sides of the lake on easy or intermediate trails. These same trails are ideal for walkers and you can find maps adjacent to the path at Banjo Paterson Park, or in bike shops or visitors centres. For fishing experiences, local fishing guide Steve Williamson can take you on an adventure in the boat to not only catch fish, but to see the stunning lake from an on-water perspective. Or just throw a line in from the shore and try and catch a fish. There are playgrounds, a skate park and you can have a game of lawn bowls, all within sight of the wonderful lake. You can find more information at www. destinationjindabyne.com.au, see our calendar for all lake events or just arrive and hit the beach this summer.

the Thredbo River. The finish date is expected sometime in February or March 2019. During the following summer of 2019-2020, the TVT will see a new uphill extension from Thredbo to Dead Horse Gap. This will be a purpose built mountain bike trail, the current river walk trail will remain the same for hikers. There are many trails in the region that entice mountain bike enthusiasts. Mt Gladstone trails in Cooma have been receiving constant attention from riders and trail builders. If you have not ridden these recently you will notice several new additions to their trail network. Jindabyne have several mt bike trails including Bungarra Alpine Centre. With over 25km of professionally built trails, there is a ride for every level plus four skills parks to practice your technique. This summer Bungarra will also build a pump track. The centre is located just outside of town on the Barry Way past Leesville Industrial Estate. For entry level riders in Jindabyne be sure to try the Hatchery Bay trail from the Discovery Park past Curiosity Rocks to Hatchery Bay. This trail is really an extension from the bike path in town, so you can start at Banjo Paterson Park and continue past the concrete path onwards. On the east shore of Lake Jindabyne, The Tyrolean trail network offers something for everyone from green to black trails and more
terrain changes. They can be accessed by riding from town across the dam wall. Marty Whittington from Scared Ride bike shop in Jindabyne said all of these trails have a great variety for all levels of riders and they stock maps for all the trails. “For those starting the summer and looking to get their groove in the saddle, the Hatchery Bay trail from Jindabyne will be a great warmup trail to get your legs in,” said Marty. Sacred Ride will also be selling and hiring E-bikes this summer. Marty said the E-bike is a new category that a lot of people are having an amazing experience on and allowing them to ride further and experience new terrain. For groups looking for guided tours, Sacred Ride can accommodate any request for mountain bike and E-bike tours including their legendary Kosciuszko Full Moon Tours. There next schedule full moon tour is for the third week of November. Thredbo have an amazing network of trails including their gravity trails on the mountain. SCENIC: The popular Thredbo Valley Track crosses the Thredbo River.
BMX riders will be excited with the recent announcement they will have a brand new $250,000 track at Sport and Recreation in Jindabyne. Member for Monaro John Barilaro and Parliamentary Secretary for Southern NSW Bronnie Taylor MLC pledged the funds when they recently visited the site with members of the Snowy Mountains BMX Club. “Obviously the Snowy Mountains attracts winter sports fans in droves but summer in Snowy Mountains is becoming just as popular. With BMX now an Olympic sport, I hope the track will bring a new breed of bicycle riders to our region,” said Mr Barilaro. Snowy Mountains BMX Club President
Ŷ
John Graham said, “This project has been in the making for over three years and it is great to finally be able to say it has all been worth the work.” “The track will fit right in with the existing bicycle sports currently available in Jindabyne and will attract members from all over the region including Cooma, Berridale, Bombala, Adaminaby, Bredbo and beyond,” said Mr Graham. Club treasurer Jacky English said the BMX racing community Australia wide is really strong and racers do travel all over the country for events. The club hope to attract a state title within three years and the track could be complete before Christmas.

Thredbo alpine with altitude STANDING tall on the very top of Australia is a bucket list dream for all visitors to the Snowy Mountains and a feat achievable for everyone. For all your mountain escapes and the easiest way to reach the top is to start your journey from Thredbo Village, beginning with a leisurely chairlift ride before you commence the walk to Mt Kosciuszko. From the top of Thredbo at Eagles Nest you are only 6.5km’s from the summit, the mesh and paved walkway make this an easy to navigate, comfortable half day walk. So, whether it is mum or dad, the kids or even the grandparents, with a little bit of fitness you can boast to have climbed the highest point in Australia. The views from the top are magnificent with 360 degrees of the Main Range, Victorian High Country and towards the Monaro tablelands. After such a stellar snow season, hikers can expect snow to still be lingering into the early new year, so a snow ball session with the kids is a reality. Thredbo’s backyard boasts easy access to the amazing Main Range and Australia’s highest peak Mt Kosciuszko, plus they have various guided walks including Kosciuszko with a full schedule on their website.

Yoga and Wellness
Mountain Retreat
Ŷ
INSPIRED: Clear your mind with stunning Thredbo landscapes for your yoga retreat. Photos courtesy Thredbo Resort.
Thredbo has everything you need as a retreat venue and you will approach yoga from new heights, literally, physically, energetically, mentally and emotionally. MOUNTAIN environments have always been synonymous with health and vitality and this summer Thredbo has joined hands with Jane Corben from Jindabyne Yoga Shala to host several Yoga and Wellness Retreats. Staying in the heart of the Thredbo’s charming village, your weekend includes mountain top sunrise yoga amongst the giant boulders, guided hikes to the rooftop of Australia, meditation in the snowgums, healthy meals and snacks and an easy roll on a mountain bike for a quiet session on the banks of the Thredbo River.
You will explore Shakti, the pulsation of life that makes everything thrive and the mountains are the perfect environment for this. You will hike mountains and then find the balance of stillness, nudge your edges, then nourish yourself all in a stunning immersion with nature. Jane Corben, the founder and principal yoga teacher at Jindabyne Yoga Shala is renowned for her continuous depth of study and quest to deepen, enabling her to confidently present the complexities of yoga’s ancient wisdom in a practical, knowledgeable and embodied way.
Jane has attended countless yoga festivals but said Thredbo as a venue surpassed them all. “What was the different ingredient, the mountains,” she said. “The clarity of the crisp air, the proximity to unique uninhabited spaces, the absolutely spectacular imagery of the powerful landscape combined with easy access to life’s comforts makes Thredbo a perfect location. “You are still ensured a good night’s sleep, nourishing meals and a quality coffee. And don’t forget the Thredbo River for an invigorating Wim Hof session. “In yoga asanas, the key ingredient is Pranayama, breath control. From a physical point of view, practicing yoga at higher altitudes, means the air we inhale has higher and purer levels of oxygen, stimulating our cardiovascular systems and increasing the energy flow within,” said Jane. “The breath work is slow and regular, further heightening the intake of oxygen and stimulation of our trillions of cells.” It is this Snowy Mountains environment that will immerse you in three days of yoga, meditation and mountain experiences and clear your mind of the busyness of everyday and the distractions of the daily grind. With an open heart and mind and no expectations, this weekend wellness escape to the mountains is sure to nourish the soul and your cells.

Mountain Bike Heaven THREDBO is Australia’s premier mountain biking destination and the place to visit for world class trails with something for every level or rider. Season opening day is November 17 and with an exciting summer ahead expect the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park to be pumping from the outset. With gravity and cross-country trails, skills parks, kids only area and a fast-flowing pump track, there will be pulsating pedals. Adrenalin and gravity seekers can head for the Cannonball Downhill, Kosciuszko Flow Trail and All Mountain Trail where they can access over 560 metres of vertical from the top of Kosciuszko Express Chairlift. The Kosciuszko Flow Trail offers you an introduction into downhill riding or a warm up for the Cannonball. The steady gradient gives riders a more mellow ride than the
Ĺś
Cannonball, but still provides the adrenalin rush of down hilling. Highlights include uid switchbacks, epic views, smooth berms and easy rolling. The Cannonball Downhill is Thredbo’s most difficult trail descending vertically through the tree-lined Supertrail slopes. Cannonball tests riders with off-camber roots, rock drops, jumps, wall-ride and other technical features that the gravity specialists dream about. Highlights include Snakes and Ladders technical section, Bunnywalk Gap Jump and Milk Run Wall Ride. The chair also grants access to the All Mountain Trail which is manicured and tailor made for the rider looking for adventure. It meanders through three diverse ecosystems delivering flowing single-track, challenging rock-gardens and supreme views down the Thredbo
Valley. Highlights include unrivalled alpine experience, epic owing single track, lush forest sections and undulating traverses. The Thredbo Valley Track is one of the most popular tracks in the region offering a beautiful 19 kilometre cross country ride from Thredbo following the Thredbo River to Lake Crackenback Resort. New for summer 2018 is a more technical extension of the Thredbo Valley Track past Lake Crackenback (see page 24-25). Highlights include unrivalled river views, easy going and picturesque rest areas. The Kosciuszko Flow Trail and AllMountain trails will see a revamp with some welcomed realignments creating more consistent flow and fun for all rider abilities. A new link in early 2019 making its way from the top of the Gunbarrel Express chairlift across the valley to the middle slopes of the Kosciuszko Flow and Cannonball Downhill will provide riders with a low intermediate style trail. The lower slopes will also see a more direct access from the All-Mountain finish at
Creek Station, taking riders directly back to the base of the Kosciuszko chairlift, without having to use the road. Thredbo’s calendar is also stacked with the biggest MTB events including the Cannonball (see opposite page) and the Super Enduro in its third year. This event will test the true all-rounder utilising all three gravity trails on February 23-24. The 2019 Australian interschool’s MTB championships are on March 14-17. New riders to the Thredbo Mountain Bike Park can up their skills with 2 hour beginner, intermediate and advanced clinics running daily along with 2.5hr personalised private lessons tailored to the rider’s needs. There will also be a great selection of special programs for adults and the kids, including special school holiday programs.

The 18 annual Snowy Ride th
SOUNDS of motorcycles roaring through the Snowy Mountains is quite familiar to residents, more so in November when the annual Snowy Ride is held. This year will be the 18th annual ride on Saturday November 3. The event raises money for the Steven Walter Children’s Cancer Foundation (SWCCF) and impressively the Snowy Ride has helped raise over $7 million since its inception. The event is broken down into two parts, the visible one where registered participants ride on Saturday to checkpoints where they have their passes stamped. The other less obvious part of the event but very important is families whose children are suffering from cancer have the chance to visit the mountains where they are looked after by volunteers. Kids are taken on motor bike rides courtesy of the Honda Goldwing Association and families also have the chance to take a joy flight in a navy helicopter who annually support the ride. Anyone can enter the ride with the concept being riders can visit various check points at Adaminaby, Bombala, Berridale, Charlotte
Pass, Cooma, Dalgety, Jindabyne and Thredbo. They are required to have visited three checkpoints and have their pass at Thredbo by 4pm Saturday where it goes into the draw for the minor prizes. The actual $60 Snowy Ride entry payment is also a ticket into Honda Trade Promotion lottery. If you are registered you are in the draw, even if you are not in Thredbo. The winner receives a 2018 model Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin valued at more than $20,000. You don’t have to ride to win the Honda, simply pay $60 and register. There is no time constraint on the ride, it is just a great day to enjoy with your mates and wives, absorb the scenery and along the way support the foundation with all registration money going direct to SWCCF. The conclusion to the event is a mass ride from Bullocks Flat to Thredbo at 4pm on Saturday. This is a true spectacle with streets lined with fellow riders and spectators before assembling in the Village Square for the presentations and lucky draws. Each year more than 2000 riders participate and last year they raised over

$200,000 which will fund further research into a cure for childhood cancer. The foundations goal is 100% survival for all children with cancer. Snowy Mountains Magazine visited Lake Crackenback Resort last year where families were enjoying the day and the helicopter rides as part of the Snowy Hydro family program. Even though these children had been through a traumatic experience with cancer, the smiles on their face was infectious. Plus, it was a pleasant relief from their ongoing treatment. This email was sent from parent Jon to Snowy Ride’s Sue Walters. It certainly sums up the feelings of families involved. “I’ve witnessed many things in my lifetime but never have I witnessed nor been part of something so overwhelming. To have been included and participate in the Snowy Hydro family program and your annual Snowy Ride will never be forgotten, we will remain forever grateful and truly believe we have made many lifelong friends.” “With Sarah’s recent treatment still being very raw and no real prior expectation of the event, what we witnessed together with the genuine love, care and support that was extended to our and four other families by your foundation, was nothing short of amazing.
“All of your efforts helped not only reinstate those indelible smiles back on the faces of some very special and deserving children who innocently were forced to face some of life’s harshest adversity but also on the faces of their parents and siblings.” To help raise money for children’s cancer, register at www.snowyride.com.au.

CALM: Murray Ogilvie can teach you how to y ďŹ sh.
Learn to y ďŹ sh this spring with a 1-hour introductory lesson for $60.00 ($15 per extra person). Enquire at High Country OutďŹ tters, Nugget’s Crossing.
Fly ďŹ shing lessons rod, they are pretty much hooked for life,â€? said Murray. No pun intended of course, but once that first trout is hooked you will be like other fly fisherman, constantly improving your skill to think as one with the trout. Murray is offering a special this spring where you can learn to cast with a reduced one-hour introductory lesson for a single or group of people. They also have some great ready to fish kits in their Nugget’s Crossing shop and can offer expert advice on flies and locations to get you started.
WITH such an abundance of rivers and lakes in the Snowy Mountains, anglers descend on this famous trout territory to try and lure their prized catch. Add to this the skilful art of fly fishing and you will be in your element stalking the banks and shoreline. Murray Ogilvie from High Country Fly Fishing knows every ripple in the river and is an expert guide. He says it is not hard to fly fish, you just need to practice the art before you reach the river. “We teach them in the park to cast to a target, but once they catch a fish on a fly
REGULAR ďŹ sherman who visit Steve Williamson’s Tackle Shop at Snowline in Jindabyne will see a new face this summer after Steve recently sold the shop to Brian Burns. After 15 years at the shop Steve will now concentrate on his Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing Adventures which he has been running for 30 years. The good news for ďŹ sherman is that Brian is an avid trout angler, having trout ďŹ shed for 40 years, and has ďŹ shed the Snowy Mountains area for well over 20 years. He has relatives in Jindabyne, has a wealth of knowledge and has been loving his new environment. “Fishing has been a lifetime leisure activity and to get away from the stresses of manufacturing and cost accounting which is what I was doing, this is fantastic, I am having a ball,â€? said Brian. He also revealed that he will still be doing plenty of ďŹ shing himself around the shorelines and rivers with the bonus that all the ďŹ sherman that come into the shop reveal where they have been catching ďŹ sh. Steve said he will continue to support Brian and “will still be operating my y ďŹ shing and charter boat business from

45th Annual Snowy Mountains Trout Festival making for a great week with mum or dad on the water. The presentation is always well attended as entrants need to be there to win the lucky draw prizes on the day. First prize this year is a 2018 Quintrex 370 Explorer with a 15hp four stroke Yamaha motor and trailer valued at over $10,000. Thanks to sponsors Riverina Marine Centre, Wagga Wagga, Yamaha and Quintrex. With $12,000 given away in secret weight prizes, largest ďŹ sh in various categories and lucky draw prizes, be sure to enter even if you can only ďŹ sh on a few days of the event. This year the presentation will be held in Adaminaby Town Centre at 12pm on Friday November 9. All information is on the website at www.troutfestival.com.au.
KEEN ďŹ sherman will be out in numbers for the annual Snowy Mountains Trout Festival on November 3-9 and with waters on the rise in both Lake Eucumbene and Lake Jindabyne, they will be hoping the ďŹ sh are on the bite. The festival is ideal for all people from beginners to experienced anglers, and with a host of prizes to be won start tying those hooks now. You can register at any of the weigh in stations and indicate what category you want to ďŹ sh. Each year upwards of 700 people enter, many competing for decades and spending this same November week chasing the trout. Last year the biggest brown trout was caught by Joe Brancato, a decent 2576 gram ďŹ sh caught at Buckenderra. Joe’s team the Pirate Parkways also won the overall brown trout team prize. Snow Goose Hotel publican Andrew Smith (pictured) was part of the winning rainbow team. Regular anglers know their secret spots each year, but this year the lake levels could be lower than the past few years. There are still plenty of ďŹ sh it is just a matter of if you can lure them. The event is open to junior anglers as well, and many smiling kids enter each year

Summer Styles Looking to step up this summer with style, be sure to try on some of this great collection of clothing and accessories.
SPRING and summer in the Snowy Mountains is a magical and memorable time of year. Let’s make sure it’s remembered for all the right reasons. The devastating effects of bushfires are never far from our minds, particularly in the lead-up to the warmer months. An extremely dry winter has prompted authorities in New South Wales to bring forward the start of the bushfire season for much of the state.
High Country Outfitters When you need to be kitted out for your summer adventures, High Country Outfitters have the best quality range of clothing and footwear for mountain activities.
As worsening drought conditions across NSW continue to put a strain on farmers, a long stretch of below average rainfall has the state’s rural fire service looking nervously towards the coming summer. Locally, fires in Bemboka have caused considerable damage and heartache. Our emergency service personnel - both volunteer and paid - are not just first responders, but pillars of strength in communities. They are the ones we rely on in times of crisis. We should never take for granted the work our emergency services staff and volunteers do. Our local emergency services personnel selflessly respond to all types of emergencies. There is no question that the people of this local community and indeed this State, know they can depend on our emergency services for help and protection during times of crisis. With the warmer weather fast approaching and the holiday season not far off, we can do our bit to help. Preparation is the key, it’s important that you know what you will do in the event of a fire, have a plan, and stay informed. Do not to let poor planning or careless behaviour ruin what should be a season for celebration and fun. These are some easy and common sense steps you can take to help protect your loved ones and property this spring and summer. Get your property ready by trimming trees, clearing yards and cleaning gutters and drains. If you are heading out on the water stop and consider what disasters might impact you and your family. Don’t mix drugs and alcohol with swimming, always wear a life jacket if on a watercraft or out rock fishing, and never drive through flood waters.

Scenic lunch venues EVERYONE deserves a pleasant dining environment that can also be intertwined with a scenic drive and country fresh air. So here a few suggestions this summer depending on where you might be travelling from. The Alpine Way between Jindabyne and Lake Crackenback Resort may only be a short distance, but you have some of the most popular lunch hot spots that offer ambience, scenery and of course tasty food.
Are you looking for a lifestyle change or career progression? Southern NSW Local Health District have opportunities for you
JINDABYNE BREWING Jindabyne Brewing offer a relaxed atmosphere and be sure to sample the bread or cheese board as a group snack with one of their six on tap beers. For something more flamboyant, the prawn, lamb and beef skewers are delicious to sample either inside or alfresco.
Southern NSW Local Health District (SNSWLHD) extends from the NSW South Coast and Southern Tablelands, across the Great Dividing Range and the Snowy Mountains and mostly surrounds the Australian Capital Territory. SNSWLHD Hospitals and Community Health Centre’s provide a range of services including Emergency, Intensive Care, Coronary Care, Maternity and Pediatrics, Acute Medical and Surgical Services, Sub-Acute, Primary and Community Services and Mental Health Services.
SNSWLHD can offer you:
WILDBRUMBY DISTILLERY Wildbrumby Distillery is a favourite among visitors and has a splendid garden setting where the kids can roam. Here you can relax and sample great food as well as their distillery specialties of award-winning schnapps, gin and vodka. Schnitzels are always a favourite but be sure to sample the spinach and ricotta dumplings and for lovers of sausages, the farmers Pfandl with German sausage, kassler, kipfler potatoes and sauerkraut or the smoked German sausages will appeal. The distillers plate is ideal for a group and the beef gulasch very tasty.

Hidden gem for summer holiday DISCOVERING a hidden gem for a holiday location is like winning the lottery for many. While craving some peace and quiet you also wish for enough options to keep you and the family entertained for your stay. Khancoban on the western side of the Snowy Mountains certainly ticks all the wish list boxes for a summer holiday, plus more. Can we keep the kids happy, tick? Are there enough activities to do, tick? Is it peaceful so it feels like a holiday, tick? Is it affordable, tick? Driving into Khancoban the obvious ďŹ rst sight is the huge lake nestled up against the soaring mountains. It is an impressive sight to say the least and the centre of attention during summer. The Khancoban Pondage is a vast threekilometre expanse of water and ideal for all your H2O activities. Water skiers have plenty of space, canoes and kayakers can trawl along the edges or circumnavigate the lake, the kids can swim or play. For ďŹ shermen it is an ultimate destination where trout are plentiful in the Pondage, Swampy Plains and Murray Rivers. A whopping record trout caught last November weighed 10.5 kg and was 90cm in length and is now mounted on the wall at the Khancoban Alpine Inn. The lake is part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which is all at your doorstep for
easy viewing. A short drive and you can access Murray 2 power station visitor centre with power station inspections available daily at 11am and 2pm. Along the Alpine Way you can see the scheme’s enormity at Murray 1 power station from the viewing platform, just a small piece of the scheme’s vast puzzle. Khancoban is perfectly situated to explore most of the Snowy Schemes dams and sights. The Kosciuszko National Park visitors centre in the middle of town is ideal to pick up required maps and directions. Scenic drives to Cabramurra or the Tumbarumba wineries are all within easy reach as is Thredbo. The lookout at Scammel’s Spur lookout on the Alpine Way shows all the mountains of the western slopes and there are numerous 4WD trails to explore if that suits. Mountain biking enthusiasts will ďŹ nd trails around the town, golfers have great views from the golf club on the higher side of town and there is adventure at every turn. The town has that homely feel about it with a small shopping centre available to buy gifts and supplies from the Post OfďŹ ce or the Khancoban chemist. The roadhouse cafĂŠ is a perfect lunch stop

and to stock up on supplies and no country town is complete without a friendly pub. The Khancoban Alpine Inn has 36 hotel rooms available to stay and offers great counter lunches and the best steaks for dinner. The Khancoban Lakeside Caravan Park is popular in summer and last year was listed in the top 10 caravan parks by Free Range Camping. The judges said, “We have based our selection on the popularity and feedback we have received on each of these parks, also the features and facilities they offer and of course their location. For more information go to the website in ad below, see map on page 20 or call the individual businesses direct.

Cool climate wines WINE tasting weekends have drawn many a wine enthusiast to far ung regions in Australia. Tumbarumba is next on your list and has long surpassed the reputation of emerging wine region. Now standing tall as a prominent award-winning region, Tumba is lapping at the heels of its more renowned industry peers. The beauty of this boutique cool climate wine region is during any visit you sample their ďŹ nest produce on offer plus simultaneously experience the towns relaxed atmosphere and meet the vineyard owners who have put their wine on the map. Nestled in the western foothills of the Snowy Mountains, a drive around Tumba is as relaxing as any journey you will embark. Rolling hills across green countryside will greet you along with friendly hosts at picturesque cellar doors. Courabyra Wines owner Cathy Gairn is a hands-on operator and when she is not in the vineyard tending to the vines she will be serving customers, creating exquisite tasting plates in the kitchen or welcoming the many return guests that have elevated this cellar door to reap accolades. With a friendly demeanour and a smile on her face, Cathy is very proud of Courabyra’s success and rightfully so. The sparkling
white wine continues to accrue awards and a visit to the cellar door will allow you to sample this and many other ďŹ ne vintages, all with a scenic view of vineyard. Obsession Wines has been a work of labour and love for owner Adrian Brayne. What started out as a small container for wine tastings has developed into a full-blown winery, acquiring additional vineyards to produce more grapes and now the cellar door open seven days a week from 10am-4pm. It is always a pleasure for Adrian to conduct his weekend winery tours as there is a special bond with all aspects of the building. Each nut, bolt, crusher or concrete slab has a portion of his or a family members blood, sweat and tears. The view from Tumbarumba’s highest vineyard is also spectacular with the mountains in the distant all adding to the atmosphere and the drive from town. Johansen Wines the closest winery to town on Black Range Road recently acquired the neighbouring vineyard and property “Glenburnieâ€? from Robert and Robyn Parkes and have expanded their operation. They already have plans to build a new cellar door on their original property, but with this new purchase they have been busy renovating an existing building for a cellar

door. They will be open every weekend for wine tastings and sales this summer. Tumbarumba Wines Escape visitors will notice new faces at the winery this year with Simon and Tracy having purchased the vineyard from Gary and Kay. You can ďŹ nd them on the Jingellic Road in a pristine setting with greats views to the mountains over their pond at the bottom of the gardens. The Tuscany setting is a relaxing venue to sample some of the ďŹ ne chardonnay and pinot grigio. The Tumbarumba Motel is the best venue in town to rest after your countryside

Sights of Tumbarumba LONG gone are days of highway travelling, experienced holidaymakers know it is far more interesting to venture onto the lesser travelled roads to find the best Australia has to offer. Tumbarumba lies on one of those less travelled roads but that is part of its beauty, less crowded, a friendly country town and plenty of attractions to keep you entertained. Paddy’s River Falls is one of their main tourist charms and with camping nearby on Paddy’s River, and a river walk from the campground you can partake in sight seeing, hiking and all from the campsite.
Ŷ
HUMOUR: Tim O’Brien from Boggy Creek Shows. PHOTOS: Steve Cuff.
Before you see the falls, you will certainly hear them especially if there has been recent rain. There are several vantage points but by far the best is to venture the short walk down to the rock pools where you get a true appreciation of the plunging water. The rock pools are also a great swimming hole in summer and worthy of an afternoon picnic. From the falls you are not far from Obsession Wines and the Hume and Hovell Track where you can do short hikes or plan longer overnight trips. In town stop at the Dare to Bite café in the main street or the Nest Café where you can also dine while watching movies. They have regular markets as well if you happen to time your stay when they are scheduled. One of the most entertaining rural shows
you are ever likely to see is the Boggy Creek Show. Cattleman Tim O’Brien runs this brilliant two-hour show with his cast of farm animals, horses and dogs. Set in a purpose-built amphitheatre, if you are in Tumba and the shows are on you should make the journey to attend. There are several shows scheduled for November with all details on the boggycreekshows.com.au website. While the towns industry is partly made up of timber with the Hyne Timber Mill, it is the tall pines that visitors come to see at the Sugar Pine Walk situated 22km north of town on the Batlow Road. No matter how many times you have visited, these tall limbs seem to stretch further skyward and never cease to amaze. A thin line of trees has been cut from the forest to make this most elegant of scenic walks. If you are continuing towards Tumut be sure to stop at Batlow and visit the apple and cherry orchards. As summer progresses the roadside cellar doors are full of fresh cherries when in full season. Wilgro Orchards also stock many varieties of apple produce including cider. Tumbarumba host some huge events during the summer season, the Tumbarumba Rodeo being one of the biggest. Here you find the top professional cowboys in Australia competing in what is one of the best afternoons of action at the showground. The rodeo is on every new year’s day with the start time for main action from 2pm. The town does swell for this day so if you need to arrange accommodation, the earlier the better. In February the Tumbafest is a great weekend of entertainment with huge name artists performing each day, markets and stalls, fine local food and the regions wineries also on site. Set on the picturesque Creekscape in town this an event not to be missed. You can find more travel information at www.tumbarumbaregion.com.au.

Excitement of race day out WHO knows what is better, the occasion to dress up in your ďŹ nest attire, the excitement of backing a winner as your horse ashes past the winning post or the overall atmosphere. Either way you must plan a country race day this season. There are plenty of great days to experience or visit them all. The invitation is open to everyone, so invite your friends, make the trip from the city and enjoy a weekend away. Girls start making your ďŹ nest fascinators and boys dust the cobwebs off the suit you may only wear once a year. Better still, follow the theme of each individual event and enter the fashions on the ďŹ eld, you may just win the great prizes
on offer at all venues. Tumut Race Club have several race meetings during the summer and is there anything more splendid than relaxing under the huge elm trees. In November there is also the excitement generated by Melbourne Cup week, so take a leaf out of their book and attend the Derby Day on November 3 in Tumut. To cure your Christmas blues, recover at the Boxing Day meeting and dress the kids up in jockey silks for the family day on January 19. In February the major trophy of the season, the Tumut Cup will be run where a huge crowd is expected. You can book your marque now as well for any day. The Adaminaby Races on November 24 will see this classic country setting brimming to capacity as the surrounding community travel for what is the biggest day of the year in Adaminaby. You can arrange your own marque or celebrate the day in style by booking tickets for a luncheon in the pavilion. With a long home straight, you can see the horses from all vantage points although the racing is not always the main focal point. Adaminaby attendees love dressing up so be sure to be creative with this year’s theme, The Good, The Bad and The Glamourous. Buses run from town and the day out concludes at
the Snow Goose Hotel. Cooma Races is always a big day for the town so be sure to keep Saturday December 8 free. Last year local trainer Kevin Byrne won the prestigious Sundowners’ Cup, but who will win this year. The fashions on the field are always well contested with entrants going to great lengths with their style. Last year international model and Cooma native Annaliese Seubert added some elegance to the occasion. Visit Facebook / Cooma Monaro Race Club for all details.

Full speed ahead By Steve Cuff TUMUT are set for a great start to their summer with Dave Warby back on Blowering Dam on December 1-2 for more testing of his boat Spirit of Australia II. Dave is trying to break his father Ken’s world water speed record which has stood for 40 years. On October 8, 1978 Ken set the record at 511.10 kph (317.58mph) in Spirit of Australia. Dave has had several trial runs at Tumut and each time the boat has gone faster. The team have deliberately set out to do a series of trials to see how the boat reacts as speeds increase. The record of 511kmh is not something you just turn up on the day and achieve. In their September outing the boat reached its fastest speed so far, clocking 350kmh (218 mph) with Dave saying
Ŷ
that the boat has so much power. This was also the first time the boat had run the full record distance course. Unfortunately, that day they did have a minor issue but any boat time is valuable for assessment. “It’s more than just getting speed in the boat, it is really team practice and refuelling at one end and getting my land bearings on the course. As the boat is getting closer to record speeds now we need to run the full course,” said Dave. “I am not using much throttle to run 350k’s, I am really not. That’s got much more up its sleeve and the last 2000rpm in that engine is where it really cakes on the speed. But it’s creeping up and doing it right. That’s how dad broke the record, he crept it up and he fixed problems along the way, and we are doing the same.” It is anticipated that after the December outing the team will return in later February for more trials, and possibly March to try for the record. You can follow their journey on facebook.com/ warbymotorsport/.

Go with the flow SUMMER in Tumut is a wonderful time to visit where a combination of great weather, scenic vistas and water ensure you have a relaxed holiday. The Tumut River that meanders through town has its origins high in the alpine but a great viewing point is Blowering Dam. Here you can drive to the base of the dam for great sightseeing and picnic areas. The drive from Tumut to Talbingo also offers great views of the dam and has many ideal swimming spots and boating locations. The racecourse is set virtually on the river bank and has a wonderful café plus the river trail in town offers a scenic walk taking in the wetlands. For water enthusiasts you have endless options for canoeing, kayaking and water skiing. You can find extra information at the Tumut visitor centre which is also a good starting point for your journey. Across the road you will find the Tumut Broom Factory, the last original millet broom factory in Australia. Handmade millet brooms have been made at the factory the same way since 1946. Owners Geoff and Rob invite you to drop in to the factory to view the traditional broom manufacturing process first-hand and you can purchase your own millet broom at the end. You will also find the Tumut River Brewing Company in the same precinct. The brewery has been expanded in the past year and is now a bustling establishment with regular weekend entertainment. One of the beauties of their expansion is being able to offer 24 draught beers and ciders from their impressive bar. Plus a great lunch location for gourmet pizza and a cold ale. The venue has also been in demand as a function room with a difference, where you can party away with the stainless-steel vats
as your backdrop. Or even better, if you have a function the brewery can come to you with the beers flowing from their impressive 8 tap caravan. You can find more Tumut information at www.visittumut.com.au.

Both bathrooms have underfloor heating and double glazed windows throughout the home ensure warm winters and cool through summer. The property has solar hot water with electric boost. The block backs on to Snowy Hydro’s lakeside reserve and the choice of outdoor entertaining areas all present outstanding lake views. RU5 village zoning allows residential or holiday letting with council approval, so you have options for extra income if this is your holiday home. The double garage allows for ample storage for your mountain bikes, motorbike, kayaks, skis or a boat and the established garden has drip irrigation in all planted areas. Nestled into a quite private cul de sac, this wonderful home could be your ideal holiday location or great family home. The property is being sold by Kosciuszko First National for $1.2 million. Contact agent Sally McCoullough on 0484 322 214.
JINDABYNE continues to be in demand from buyers and as more real estate comes onto the market properties and land are being snapped up quickly. Last edition we ran a story on the new gated subdivision between Tyrolean Village and Alpine Sands with 13 community titles on offer. Now only one block remains. The blocks which ranged from $350,000 up to $700,000 have been in hot demand and with a single road entrance which will be gated, privacy as well as a stunning location have played a part in their popularity. It seems buyers can not get enough of land sales as they are released, with leading Jindabyne agent Gordon Jenkinson from Kosciuszko First National saying they have sold over 130 lots of land in the last 15 months. Mr Jenkinson said during winter that the prices have ranged from $160,000 to $500,000 and many had been sold off the plan. This top price for land has now been upped with the Willow Bay prices topping at $700,000 for two prime blocks. The appeal of living in Jindabyne is the relaxed lifestyle, proximity to the mountains for winter snow exploits and the summer drawcard of the beautiful Lake Jindabyne, its surrounds and alpine activities. This has no doubt been a huge factor in families and retirees relocating for either permanent living or investing in their holiday homes. Plus, more winter seasonal workers end up staying longer term and the population slowly increases. The market may be dipping in Sydney, but in Jindabyne it is still hot property.
