The First Word BRING on summer, that’s all I can say after a winter season that certainly did not go according to plan due to numerous issues related to lockdowns. The snow season is the peak time of year for the majority of Snowy Mountains businesses, and with low winter visitation there are a swag of businesses eagerly looking ahead to a healthy summer season of trade. This summer more than ever businesses need your patronage. Now that we have a clearer roadmap ahead, we know visitors and residents alike will be out in force to help rejuvenate the Snowy Mountains economy. Don’t forget to use your Dine and Discover vouchers. By the time summer gets into full swing we can only hope that normality returns for all of us, and what a way to celebrate ‘back to normal’ than with a holiday in Australia’s alpine playground. This edition we have dedicated the majority of pages to introduce you to great travel ideas, suggest places to visit and great attractions to see. Read on and you will see you have fantastic holiday choices.
Plus, the events calendar will soon ramp up as new listings are added after what seems like an eternity in hibernation. Be sure to follow our website events calendar page where all events will be listed from around the area. Living in the mountains we always look forward to the warmer months, and let’s be honest, there is just so much to explore. Make yourself a promise this summer and make the effort to see and do something every week and be rewarded with your inner euphoria congratulating you with selfachievement. Enjoy...

Snowy Mountains Roadmap How does the saying go, it is not about the destination but more about the journey? Across the Snowy Mountains we have both, fantastic scenic journeys that will accompany your visit to so many great destinations. By STEVE CUFF THIS summer you deserve a snowy getaway, and in this Summer Holiday edition we have highlighted the best attractions to help you navigate your own personal Snowy Mountains roadmap. The Snowy Mountains covers a wide area. The Snowy Monaro with 15,162 square kilometres on the eastern side of the mountains and the Snowy Valleys with 8,960 square kilometres on the western side of the Main Range afford numerous travel options. Nestled between the two regions lies Kosciuszko National Park, the jewel in the crown. Combining a further 6,900 square kilometres of nature’s finest adventure, the park has a plethora of exciting hikes, drives and attractions. Circumnavigating Kosciuszko National Park is a journey in itself, ideal for campers with several great camping areas. For those seeking more of the comforts of motels or holiday homes, just choose
any town on the map and you will find all the luxuries of home and more than enough activities and attractions to keep you and your family well entertained on your summer holiday. From waterfalls, gorges, lookouts, meandering streams, flowing rivers, serenity of the lakes, the Snowy Scheme attractions, the most scenic of hikes or simply just relaxing and absorbing the cleanest and freshest alpine air in Australia. Yes, there is a lot to do and see here in Australia’s alpine. On the following pages you will find many of the great attractions to visit this summer, but if you need more choices, we have more, much more. You can find an extended list of touring options, full events list and more attractions on our website. Prepare For Winter 2022 THE Australian snow season may be over for 2021, but you can still prepare for next winter by securing your Epic Australia Pass. The Epic Australia Pass is the best value season pass for Australian snow lovers and allows access to three Australian resorts, Perisher, Falls Creek and Hotham, plus a host of the best international resorts for the following northern winter. Perisher in NSW is Australia’s biggest and most popular resort and combined with the Victorian resorts of Hotham and Falls Creek offer guests great family holiday options, exceptional terrain, and the best snow conditions. When the world finally returns to some normality, skiers and snowboarders with the Epic Australia Pass won’t hang up their gear for summer, instead they eagerly await their norther winter snow holiday. And what choices they have with 37 resorts to choose from in total. Vail Resorts have a host of premier North American resorts boasting Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone in Colorado, Park City in Utah, Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in California and the highly popular Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, Canada. At Vail, Beaver Creek and Whistler, guests
have 10 total days with some holiday restrictions applying. Pass holders visiting Japan receive five consecutive days with no blackout dates at both Hakuba Valley and Rusutsu for the 2022/23 season. In 2021 snow revellers had an indifferent season due to lockdowns depending on where you lived. With the Epic Coverage offered with the pass at no additional cost, guests had the reassurance of refunds for resort closures and personal events, such as qualifying stay-at-home orders, job loss, injury or illness. The same Epic Coverage is offered with the 2022 season pass. Peter Brulisauer, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Vail Resorts Australia said this past winter was one of the most difficult due to lockdowns and temporary closures in both NSW and Victoria. “This season was full of unexpected challenges for all of us as we continued to navigate the pandemic and keep our guests safe. While many were able to experience great snow conditions and wide-open slopes, we know there are skiers and riders who eagerly await next season,” said Mr Brulisauer.

Summer Comes To Life In Kosciuszko National Park VISITING Kosciuszko National Park will expel all your nature superlatives, such is the diversity of adventure awaiting. Early summer be sure to visit for the Wildflowers, some of which are exclusive to the Kosciuszko region. Flowers bloom once the snow melts with a sea of colour expanding before you at every angle. Any high alpine drive will offer a smorgasbord of wildflowers, the Charlotte Pass Village and lookout are great locations for sightings. Park in the village or lookout and explore to your hearts content.
◼ STUNNING: Blue Lake and a few billy button wildflowers. PHOTO: Didj
Take the chair to the top of Thredbo and wander or follow the path to Mt Kosciuszko (see page 25), wildflowers are evident everywhere. During spring and early summer the melting winter snow creates many dramatic scenes as rugged granite peaks reveal themselves for the summer months with rivers and lakes coming to life. There are several camping grounds affording riverside locations, think Yarrangobilly River on the Snowy Mountains Highway or Ngarigo and the Diggings on the Thredbo River via the Alpine Way. A drive to Guthega and Island Bend sees the Snowy River, or walk from Charlotte Pass lookout down to the Snowy River stepping stones crossing one of the best. Charlotte Pass lookout is also the start for the majestic Blue Lake walk, a must do half day trip on your next visit. The Main Range track a great day hike also incorporating Blue Lake. Rainbow Lake is a great short hike near Perisher suitable for the whole family. Just follow the signs on the meandering trail to be rewarded at the end. The perfect

picnic lunch location. The Snowies Iconic Walk is taking shape, the 5.6km section from Charlotte Pass to Guthega open. Just plan your car shuttle or do return trip. You will pass by the Illawong suspension bridge and the trail follows much of the upper Snowy River to Guthega Dam. Island bend has great Snowy Scheme history to explore or walk across the Guthega Dam. Stop at the Base Camp café at Guthega or for afternoon drinks, the Guthega Inn. Khancoban is a great place to visit, the
scenic Alpine Way drive from Thredbo is without doubt the best drive in the region. Be sure to stop at Geehi campground for a wander, Scammel’s Spur lookout and Murray 1 power station lookout. At Khancoban visit the town centre, hotel and the visitors centre.

Escape To Nature’s Finest YOU could well be playing the song ‘take a walk on the wild side’ as you visit Yarrangobilly Caves, as the precinct certainly offers a mix of wildlife plus adventure in this fascinating gorge. The hero attraction are the caves, but don’t for a minute think that is all there is to see. Yarrangobilly offers a slice of everything for your visit, and much more should you decide to stay here on site. Caves House and Lyrebird Cottage are wonderful accommodation options that allow you easy access to nature and a head start to explore it all. If you are driving for a day out, leave early to squeeze out every last drop of adventure. South Glory cave is a self-guided cave

For guided tours check availability on the website as to availability with times and covid regulations constantly changing the programming. Or call closer to your visit to check for changes. Jersey Cave and Jillabenan are the most popular guided tours where you can witness stalagmites and stalactites that have been created over millions of years. The Yarrangobilly River walk is often filled with sounds of birds as you wander alongside the meandering river. Starting from the Visitor Centre and walking south
PHOTO: Murray Vanderveer you will be rewarded with the Thermal Pool at the end of your journey. The Thermal Pool is the perfect location for a group BBQ lunch and to gather with friends. There is the main pool and a smaller children’s area with very shallow water. There are no food outlets, this precinct is fully self-catering. There are various walk options that show of vastly different aspects of the gorge so allow the whole day to absorb the best of the adventure. Bring your phone for photos but you may have to wait until you depart to load your new found Instagram photos as mobile service is non-existent. All part of the charm of Yarrangobilly.

Follow The Leader Short Beaked Echidna - Tachyglossus aculeatus
The story behind the picture DURING the early spring months’ female echidnas leave a scent as they wander through the bush, advertising they are ready to mate. This scent attracts males from far and wide. The male echidnas will follow the female day and night waiting for their chance to mate, and as many as eight males can form an “echidna train” behind the female, the strongest male always leading. This picture was taken after I found one such an “echidna train”. Two echidna males had already dropped off and lost the female, but the smallest male had managed to stay with her. I decided to lay on the ground in the hope that our paths would cross. Several attempts were made with this strategy, but the pair kept making detours at the last moment. Attempt after attempt, each time having to stand up as silently as possible, walking very wide around the pair and picking the next potential line they would take. As the light began to fade, I found myself separated from the couple by a log. I dared not move for fear of spooking the small creatures with the noise of crunching leaves under my feet. As I waited the female peered over the log and started to climb atop. She was

determined to evade her pursuer and started to walk along the top. The male was not so easily thwarted though and quickly took the same route atop the fallen timber. I could do nothing but sit and watch as these seemingly awkward little creatures traversed the length of the log with the skill of a gymnast on a beam. Firing off shots like my life depended on this moment I knew this would never happen again. As the sun set the echidnas made their way to a hollow stump, the female burrowed into the earth and the male dug in beside her for the night.

Would you like local professional help for your next mountain getaway?
The Road Less Travelled A road less travelled can often lead to exciting discoveries and that is certainly the case when you visit the Snowy Monaro. Here we highlight just a few of the often hidden attractions, stop and explore for more. ADAMINABY You may not be a fisherman, but you will want to see Adaminaby’s Big Trout. The big rainbow trout stands proudly in the town centre at Adaminaby and the kids will be excited to visit and have a photo taken. The Adaminaby area boasts the huge Lake Eucumbene, a sought-after fishing location. For those looking for a quiet getaway this is your place. Kosciuszko Huts Association Celebrating 50 Years of caring for and preserving the mountain huts of Kosciuszko and Namadgi. By Pauline Downing SINCE 1971 members and caretakers of the huts and homesteads of the high country of both the Kosciuszko National Park (KNP) NSW and later the Namadgi National Park (NNP) in the ACT, have stepped up and ensured the maintenance of those vernacular buildings built by the graziers, stockmen and pioneers. Every hut, homestead or utility building has its own unique story whether by dint of its builders, or a quirky event for which it gained local notoriety - shelters range from a dugout in a creek bed to pastoral villages, a garden shed to the ‘Love Nest in the Sallies’ with a variety of habitation in between. In the Snowy Mountains weather does not

bookmark the seasons, it can snow any time of the year, including Christmas Day. Bushwalkers and skiers were using the buildings as shelter in the grazing off-season with permission from the owners and when the National Park was gazetted and graziers’ leases revoked there was recognition of their value as life preserving shelters. It was Neville Gair, a Parks Superintendent whose maintenance staff consisted of four labourers to cover an area of approx. 7,000 square kilometres, who called a public meeting after petitioning the views of various interested parties to prevent the huts’ disintegration. A meeting was convened and the first Koscius(z)ko Huts Association (KHA) committee was installed in 1971 under the patronage of Paddy Pallin. KHA’s caretaker network is managed by providing the liaison between the caretakers and state and territory land management agencies. Our caretakers’ mandate (with respect to The Burra Charter: the Australia ICOMOS Charter for Places of Cultural Significance, 2013) is to protect and enhance the cultural heritage values contained within the high country of NSW and the ACT, through ̋̽ ŋłŭĀũƑġłĖ̽ĝġŭŶŋũġò̽ĝŽŶŭ̽Õłø̽ associated structures ̋̽ ũŋƑġøġłĖ̽ġłťŽŶ̽ġłŶŋ̽ĖŋƑĀũłĿĀłŶ̽ planning processes

Our work is conducted with the approval and cooperation of NPWS. It’s voluntary and we have KHA caretakers who travel 12 to 16 hours and over 1,000 kms, return, to attend a hut work party. These volunteers uphold the lore of the mountains, holding onto to social history and vitally, the need for shelter that these old buildings provide in a landscape where the weather can become deadly. Bushfires taking a toll in the years 2001 and 2020. KHA members became storytellers and poets. The love of the High Country has inspired them to collect peoples’ stories, to author books and novels, write poetry and become artists. An archive of photographs, offered up out of personal collections of long-lost huts were archived and deposited in the National Museum of Australia. For almost 30 years KHA has held annual two-day workshops
of conveying bush skills, wood skills and heritage skills where members can learn heuristic techniques when remote from the local hardware store. In my personal experience, gained with the forbearance of Jack Bolton who was born to Snowy Plain, I learnt how to ‘season’ a Furphy camp oven and to cook in it. He passed to me the recipe for the stockman’s delight, Overnight Pudding, that he insisted ‘keeps but doesn’t last.’ True! First time I took it to a work party my co-caretakers wolfed it down at one sitting. KHA has brought to its members satisfaction, the recap of a work party’s labours, the smoky crisp food cooked over an open fire, the laughter, the likemindedness, the oneness ... the joys of being a volunteer. Engineering Wonder Of The World IN its heyday, the mighty Snowy Scheme cemented itself not only into Australian folklore, but that of the engineering world, such was the achievements of the scheme and its workers. Today the ‘Snowy’ is still an engineering wonder of the world and one that you can easily visit and recap on its marvellous achievements. The Discovery Centre in Cooma is a must visit for every visitor. The centre offers a glimpse into the scheme with superb memorabilia, a fantastic diorama showing where dams capture water and how this water is distributed via a series of tunnels. Watch the vision in the
immersive theatre where the scheme comes to life before your eyes with impressive technology. The theatre really allows you to understand the scale of the scheme. One of the additions to the centre is the inclusion of a replica Snowy 2.0 tunnel boring machine (TBM). The model shows extreme detail of the inside workings of the machine, plus there are short display videos of the TBM. There will be three TBM’s in operation on Snowy 2.0. One fascinating aspect of the Cooma visit is to see actual real time operation of the Snowy Scheme. Watch the display and see which dam is flowing and what
New this summer at Khancoban will be a smaller Snowy Hydro display at the Pickled Parrot Providore and café in the town centre. The display will feature a model of the Geehi Dam, a diorama of the Snowy Scheme and information relating to the Murray power stations nearby. generators are creating energy, plus where water is being diverted through tunnels. The display is a real eye opener to the world of electricity and generation. The centre also has a wealth of books on the Snowy Scheme and other gifts available, plus stay for lunch at the great café. If you’re planning a visit, you can easily spend hours wandering through the Discovery Centre if you were to pause and read all the information. The beauty of visiting here first when arriving for your Snowy Mountains holiday, is on your travels you understand the scheme as you sight it in real life, albeit from a distance.

Snowy Trout Challenge Starts THE Snowy Trout Challenge is now running for its second year with 500 large rainbow trout released into the waterways of the Snowy Monaro. The event is open from 1 October 2021 to 31 May 2022. This year 500 rainbow trout have been released each with their own individual white tag. Open to all anglers, the region wide event was established to encourage more visitation to the region for visitors to experience great trout fishing with anglers relishing the opportunity to catch one of the large fish. The rainbow trout have been bred specifically for the Snowy Trout Challenge (STC) event at the NSW Department of Primary Industries Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne. “The NSW Government is pleased to support the 2021-22 Snowy Trout Challenge,” said an NSW Department of Primary Industries spokesperson. “This is a great initiative which showcases the Snowies region as our premier trout fishing destination and provides fantastic opportunities for families and kids to
enjoy quality fishing for spectacular Rainbow Trout bred by the expert team at the DPI Fisheries Gaden Trout Hatchery at Jindabyne.” The idea of the event is that anyone can catch one of the large rainbow trout, plus then can register their catch and go into the draw for cash and merchandise prizes. Additional $500 cash prize can be won for just registering for the event. Full details of how to register are on the event Facebook page plus in terms and conditions. See ad on adjoining page. The format has changed this year from the previous event. Businesses were not asked to sponsor individual fish this year as the economic business climate is difficult. The cash prize draws are sponsored by major sponsor Snowy Hydro and Member for Eden Monaro Kristy McBain. Should further sponsorship be arranged there will be additional draws. Currently any fish caught from October to January will go into the end of January draw. There will be monthly draws at the end of each month from January to May.

New Cycling Event to Start Summer Season An exciting new event will be unveiled in early December when Drops + Hoods debuts with its new unique cycling format of road cycling, enduro and gravel ride options. DROPS + HOODS is a pioneering event that will offer the cycling experiences riders have asked for that are not available elsewhere. The event was developed based on feedback received from thousands of riders to include multiple riding options. Riders will experience a series of cycling events held across four days and spanning the Snowy Monaro region. With participants spread across several events and locations, the event promises to deliver a boost to the region and kick off summer in style after a dire winter season of visitation. Drops + Hoods is expected to attract over 2000 visitors, including 1300 participants where riders can choose their preferred surface from road cycling, the gravity trails at Thredbo or testing their skill on local gravel rides. Draft Brumby Plan THE draft plan for the management of wild horses in Kosciuszko National Park initially expected in June was released for public comment in early October with public submissions closing on November 2. NSW Minister Matt Kean said the draft plan strikes the right balance between protecting the fragile alpine ecosystems and recognising the cultural heritage values of the wild horses. Across the Park, the plan provides for three broad zones: ̋̽ ũĀÕŭ̽ġł̽ƒĝġòĝ̽ƒġķø̽ĝŋũŭĀŭ̽ƒġķķ̽òŋłŶġłŽĀ̽ to occupy - 32% of the Park ̋̽ ũĀÕŭ̽ĔũŋĿ̽ƒĝġòĝ̽ƒġķø̽ĝŋũŭĀŭ̽ƒġķķ̽ïĀ̽ removed - 21% of the Park ̋̽ ũĀÕŭ̽ƒĝġòĝ̽ÕũĀ̽òŽũũĀłŶķƘ̽ĔũĀĀ̽ŋĔ̽ĝŋũŭĀŭ̽ and which will be kept free - 47% of the Park The areas in which horses may continue to occur are those areas with the strongest links to wild horse heritage values. The removal and exclusion of wild horses from designated areas, and the reduction in the overall population, will provide effective protection from the impacts of wild horses for many threatened species. The Kosciuszko National Park Wild Horse Heritage Management Plan has been prepared to meet the requirements of section 5 of the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act
◼
A grey brumby near Kiandra. PHOTO: Steve Cuff 2018 (Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act). The plan identifies the heritage value of sustainable wild horse populations within identified parts of the park and sets out how that heritage value will be protected while ensuring other environmental values of the park (including values identified in the plan of management for the park) are also maintained. Preparation of the plan has been informed by advice from the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Community Advisory Panel established under the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act. Advice from the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Scientific Advisory Panel has also been considered, as has information from Aboriginal stakeholders and a range of relevant sources.
Help Recycle Correctly THE Snowy Monaro Regional Council is preparing to roll out major upgrades to the region’s waste services in the coming years, this will include expansion of green waste (called FOGO by those in the know) collection services to more parts of the region. Abuse of the current FOGO system in and around Cooma this year has highlighted a key challenge our community needs to have to overcome if the expanded service is going to be successful, as well as painting a stark picture of the human cost when the system is abused. Consider that council workers at the waste sites must sift through problem waste to retrieve contaminants when residents do not comply with simple guidelines of not just green waste but recycling in general. The contaminated loads still sometimes make it into the rows of the FOGO compost. As workers turn the rows during the compost-making process, if it’s bad enough, the entire row and dozens of hours of work, thousands of litres of water, and hundreds of kilos of other ingredients are wasted. As this service is rolled out to more
communities in our region over the coming Council term, and the compost and green waste processing facilities are expanded, it’s critically important that we all as a community do the right thing with not only the lime green lidded bin, but all recycling. The success of this project - which is a key part of Council’s strategy to reduce waste and our region’s greenhouse gas emissions - depends on it. Residents and visitors also need be mindful of what should go into yellow recycling bins and the red rubbish bins. Education of how to recycle correctly has been widely publicised across not only our region, but state wide and nationally. Visitors might be on holidays, but please still recycle and dispose of waste responsibly. Surely it can’t be too hard to lift our game as a community and help dispose of all our waste and recycling correctly. After all, it is our planet and we need to help it as much as we can. Mt Kosciuszko - Australia’s Highest Mountain Everyone loves that feeling of adventure and the Snowy Mountains have the ultimate destination for you this summer climbing Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain. CLIMBING to the top of Mount Kosciuszko at 2228m above seas level allows you 360-degree views of the Main Range and the stunning rooftop of Australia. And when we same climb, we really mean walk, you simply follow the dedicated walking path from Thredbo or the Summit Road from Charlotte Pass. The quickest and easiest way to reach the summit of Kosciuszko is to drive to Thredbo Village, take a scenic chairlift ride on the Kosciuszko Express to Eagles Nest restaurant and then follow the raised mesh path for 6.5km until you reach the very top. Along your journey you will be enthralled with scenic lookouts, gentle running streams, sprawling wildflowers when in season and a true sense of adventure. The views at Lake Cootapatamba lookout and the red Cootapatamba Hut in the distance are an ideal resting point with your destination in sight.

Allow your self at least half a day for the round trip from Thredbo depending on how often you stop to admire the alpine beauty and take photos. The trail has undulations but as you could expect when ascending a mountain, it is all uphill to the top but not overly strenuous. For hikers in November and December there is a high chance you will still encounter snow as the winter snowfalls often take months to melt away. A potential bonus for the kids to throw a snowball or even make a summer snowman. At Rawson Pass there is a junction with Mount Kosciuszko above you, a timely “nature stop” with Australia’s highest amenities and the road to the right leading to Charlotte Pass. For those venturing from Charlotte Pass, drive to the lookout and park where you will commence your 9km journey each way along the Summit Road. Allow yourself at least 6 hours round trip on this longer version. As you begin you have the Snowy River to your right in the valley below and further ahead you will cross the Snowy near its headwaters. The journey is longer this way,
but you do walk past Seaman’s Hut, one of the most iconic stone huts in Kosciuszko National Park. The hut is a must stop for photos. As they say in Italy, all roads lead to Rome, and here on your journey all trails lead to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko. During summer tens of thousands of people embark on this journey, and it truly is one of Australia’s all time bucket list hikes to say you have reached the top. As you approach the last kilometre you virtually circumnavigate the summit as the trail winds around the mountain offering stunning vistas into Victoria to the south and north to many more impressive mountain peaks. When planning your adventure be mindful of the weather and check the forecast for your scheduled day. The weather changes fast in the high alpine and you need to prepare. Extra layers are a must. Pack your lunch, snacks and plenty of water and be prepared as you will be away from civilisation for at least half of the day if not more.

Leisurely Lake Life For Jindabyne Summer LEADING into the summer months, Lake Jindabyne is bristling to the rim at 86% capacity in late October, as full as the lake has been since 2012. As the centre piece for the Jindabyne summer, and the first sight you see at East Jindabyne on your arrival, the lake is where you can dedicate precious hours of your summer holiday. The lake is also the prime fixture for

residents who take full advantage of the water offerings to participate in water skiing, fishing, kayaking, stand up paddle boards, sailing and of course swimming. Yes, a day by the lake is a great summer pastime for everyone. New sights you will see this summer that may be foreign to you are the hydrofoils whipping across the surface and this year a new water bike available from Sacred Ride, the Mant5. You can hire water sports craft from the western shore opposite the Thredbo turnoff should you wish to explore more of lake. Choosing Jindabyne as your holiday destination opens a whole world of wonderful daily itineraries which often revolve around the lake and the weather. Too hot to hike in the alpine, then the lake is a great choice and the chance to add to your “beach” tan. Just find your own personal beach. The weather is cool, then this is the ideal opportunity to venture higher into Kosciuszko National Park for many of

the alpine exploits or take advantage of the lake views with a ride on your mountain bike. Or combine an early start for your favourite alpine hike and then retreat to the lake for an afternoon. The options for exploring from your Jindabyne base are endless. Popular locations with easy access to the lake are the Claypits area for boating and swimming at the Barry Way roundabout. The area to the right in front of the gym
equipment is ideal for the young kids and a picnic area. Walking on the lake foreshore path you will see numerous small beaches depending on the lake level, or the beach in front of the NRMA caravan park is a great location for swimming. The Jindabyne lifestyle is certainly laid back in the summer. With no urgency to reach the snow like the winter crowd, a relaxing start to the day can be based around coffee and breakfast at one of the

ONE of the best days on the Jindabyne summer calendar will see cowboys riding broncs and bulls at the Jindabyne, Man from Snowy River Rodeo. Always a fun day out, be sure to pencil in the date and arrive early to see all the action consisting of barrel racing, bareback, broncs and the crowd favourite, the big bucking bulls. Organisers said they are very pleased and excited to let all of our competitors, spectators and sponsors know that we
are gearing up for this year’s annual rodeo to be held on Tuesday, 28th of December 2021. “Of course we will need to be sticking to the rules set out by NSW Health and ABCRA, as well as all people entering will need to check in via QR Code, but everyone will have had plenty of practice with that by the time our date rolls around,” said Rodeo organisers. “Can’t wait for you all to join us at the 2021 Man from Snowy River Rodeo.”

New Jindabyne Supermarket By STEVE CUFF IN an exciting new development for Jindabyne, residents and visitors to the town will now have their very own Friendly Grocer Supermarket located in the Town Centre. The Friendly Grocer will be a very convenient option for shoppers and judging by the response of locals when they found out the news, it is sure to be popular. “It’s really exciting at the moment for the town to have another option of supermarket,” said store manager Sal Shirvington. “The feedback so far has been super positive, and everyone is really excited and looking forward to it. It should bring a bit more general traffic to the Town Centre, and you have the butcher right next door as well, so really, it could be your one stop shop.” “The Friendly Grocer Jindabyne will strive to offer competitive weekly offers through our catalogues to give our customers variety and savings on a wide range of household products.”
The store which is locally owned will have opening times between 7am till 7pm 7 days a week and is certain to breather more life into the Town Centre on a yearround basis. Friendly Grocer was originally founded in New Zealand in 1923 and came to Australia in 1956 with 240 stores currently in QLD, NSW, ACT, Victoria. All stores are owned, run and managed by local people. The Jindabyne store opens on November 3. “Our aim at Friendly Grocer Jindabyne is to stock a wonderful selection of products throughout the store priding ourselves in friendly staff and customer service. This will also be an excellent opportunity for young teenagers within the community to gain experience in retail and customer service with a small number of afternoon and weekend shifts available for those that may be interested.” The store will stock all your general household needs including fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, dairy, confectionary, non-perishables, cleaning products, ready to eat meals, healthy snacks and drinks plus much more. “So come on in and say “Hi” and check it out for yourself,” said Sal.

Burnt Kosciuszko Huts To Be Rebuilt DURING the 2019-20 bushfires it was tragic to see the loss of not only extensive vegetation areas of Kosciuszko National Park, but sadly the many huts that are scattered across the park. Viewing these huts after the bushfires saw devastating damage, many burnt to the ground. In late October National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) announced they will rebuild almost all the huts damaged by the catastrophic bushfires following an extensive assessment process which considered the significance of each structure. NPWS Area Manager Steve Cathcart said that these important structures include 10 historic huts that were burnt despite the valiant efforts of firefighters. “There are more than 70 huts in Kosciuszko National Park, with others across the Australian alps that are considered to have outstanding national heritage value and significance, and as a group the huts have State Heritage significance for their historic, aesthetic and social values,” said Mr Cathcart. “The huts are an integral part of the cultural landscape of Kosciuszko National Park demonstrating different construction materials and techniques, past land uses, travel, communication practises, past times and continue to be visited today by people enjoying the park including walkers, riders and skiers.” “Since February 2020, NPWS officers have been working to assess and record damage, preserve original features where possible and consult with

Even though some original fabric may be gone, the huts can be rebuilt to retain peoples’ connections with these places; from the families who built them, to current caretakers and people who visit them for recreation.” The rebuilding program will be
developed in consultation with Kosciuszko Huts Association and families associated with the huts. NPWS will enlist the aid of staff, contractors and volunteers trained in traditional construction techniques to enable continuation of heritage building skills such as splitting slabs with a maul and froe and log cabin construction and help keep these skills alive. NPWS is looking for additional staff to be part of the program and positions will be advertised at www.iworkfor.nsw.gov.au.

New Gravity MTB Trail at Thredbo By STEVE CUFF THREDBO have been the innovators of gravity mountain biking in Australia constantly upgrading and adding new mountain bike trails. This year those seeking to experience gravity riding for the first time will welcome the new Sidewinder beginner green rated trail. Starting from the top of the Merritts Gondola the trail descends to the valley floor linking up with the Merritts Gondola mid-station or the Home Run trail. This new trail compliments Thredbo’s All Mountain, Kosciuszko Flow, Ricochet and the famous Cannonball downhill trail. We spoke to Thredbo MTB Business manager Tim Windshuttle about the Sidewinder trail and other MTB news. NEW SIDEWINDER MTB TRAIL The Sidewinder trail is phase one of the development of MTB trails in the Cruiser ski area. Over the next few years Thredbo will be developing this area which will be ideally suited for beginners. In future years they hope to open the Cruiser chair for mountain biking. “Sidewinder is a beginner gravity trail, but saying that it still does descend a couple of hundred vertical metres down the hill but is a great starting point for those looking to get into gravity mountain biking,” said Tim.
◼ SKILL: Thredbo have new mt bike lessons including school holiday camps.
“It is super wide, a mostly smooth surface free of any technical features including rocks and drops and it will be our easiest trail accessed by a lift in Thredbo. It is predominantly a beginner green rated gravity trail, it might be a little bit different to your average off-road bike trail in the city, as it is a gravity mountain bike trail.” The new trail is perfect for the aspiring novice gravity rider, a game changer for the rider to now progress from an easy green trail to the longer intermediate blue trails of the All Mountain and Kosciuszko Flow, plus then the black trail of the Cannonball. The Merritts Gondola will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday plus during school holidays for access to the Sidewinder trail. THREDBO MTB SCHOOL With such a big mountain and so much to offer, it is only natural that taking lessons will improve your technique allowing faster progress to tackle the more difficult terrain. Tweaking those skills and gaining tips early in the summer will have you blasting down the mountain with more confidence. This year Thredbo MTB School have added two more levels of lessons to their program making it much easier to be grouped with similar level riders and to progress with sound technique. They also offer a great ‘Know Your Level’ chart and a quiz to easily determine the best lesson for you. “Additional daily lessons have been added to the teaching program so riders wanting to tackle the harder trails now have the perfect progressions. The intermediate was always a broad skill level, so it is breaking it down further into different levels,” said Tim. “We have introduced a cool handy quiz online, if you are not sure of your level you can answer a bunch of questions and it recommends a suggested clinic for you to book into.” “The bike school is definitely improving

for us, obviously most people know how to ride a bike to start with, but mountain biking is slightly different, and you really need to know the right technique and skills to confidently ride the gravity trails. “Lessons are getting really popular. We are seeing not only newcomers to mountain biking taking them up, but also people who have been riding for quite some time are further developing their technique and skills.” CANNONBALL MTB FESTIVAL The Cannonball TMB Festival is the premier event on the Thredbo MTB calendar and now has a new February time slot.
“Moving Cannonball suits the Australian mountain bike event circuit a whole lot better and suits the international riders if they can visit leading into the international race season,” said Tim. “It was always a little jam packed to come into the season with Cannonball so early in the season. I think we can host a much better event with better race tracks, the trails will be in better shape in February rather than December.” The schedule has also been adjusted with the marquee Australian Open Downhill event finishing on Saturday afternoon followed by the crowd favourite Whip Wars. The village will host a music act on the Saturday night to wrap up the festival.

Thredbo Gondola and Chairlift Rides A visit to the Snowy Mountains is not the same without a sightseeing adventure to the top of the mountain at Thredbo Resort. This summer the attraction has been elevated to a new level with not only the Kosciuszko Express chair running for sightseeing and mountain biking, but also the Merritts Gondola will run three days a week all summer long plus during school holidays. The chairlift and gondola rides are all on the one ticket and offer two totally different experiences. The chairlift ride to the top and Eagles Nest restaurant has been one of the most

popular summer adventures. With the breeze blowing in your face, sit back and enjoy the ride as you peruse the trails below and watch mountain bikers weave their magic on the tracks. These are the same slopes that are covered in snow during winter for people to ski and snowboard. At the top of the Kosciuszko chair you can visit the Eagles Nest restaurant, Australia’s highest restaurant with 270 degree views of Thredbo Valley and the alpine. For your second lift ride adventure, embark on a smooth ride inside the gondola cabin (which is ideal for bad weather) and alight at the Merritts Mountain House restaurant and deck. The Gondola is the newest lift at Thredbo and whisks you from the Valley Terminal up through the trees over The Schuss run to Merritts. Be sure to look for any live music that may be scheduled during your visit at the Merritts Mountain House. The deck area is the ideal venue to kick back for lunch and a beverage where you can also keep an eye on the kids as they frolic on the adjacent slopes. The Merritts Mountains House and the

Snowy 2.0 Powers Ahead The Snowy 2.0 project is now well underway with tunnel boring commenced at Lobs Hole, new tunnel boring machines being assembled, earthworks continuing at Tantangara and the Cooma segment factory fully operational. Here are the latest updates. main drive. Weighing in at 152 tonnes, the load required two prime movers at each end to transport the cargo.
◼
LAUNCH: The Cooma Segment Factoiry official ribbon cutting.
WHEN the Snowy 2.0 project was first announced by Snowy Hydro it was always going to be a game changer not only for the Snowy Mountains region, but as a nationbuilding energy project that will provide on-demand, clean, renewable energy. The Snowy 2.0 project will link two existing Snowy Scheme reservoirs, Tantangara and Talbingo, with 27km of waterway tunnels and a power station with six pump-turbines located about 800m underground. Water in the top storage will be released for energy generation at times of peak demand and pumped back at times when there is excess energy in the grid, meeting demand when needed. LOBS HOLE TBM LADY EILEEN HUDSON At the Lobs Hole worksite, tunnel boring machine (TBM) the Lady Eileen Hudson is well underway excavating the main access tunnel down to the underground power station site and is currently more than 550 metres into its 2.6km journey.
◼ One concrete segment being unloaded from the casing.
TBM KIRSTEN Additionally at Lobs Hole, the assembly of the next Snowy 2.0 tunnel boring machine (TBM Kirsten, named after Australian astrophysicist Kirsten Banks) continues. The 11-metre diameter cutter head, tail skin and the front and middle shields of TBM Kirsten including inside mechanical components have been installed. Assembling the connector beams and segment erector and building five trailing gantries in the cradle sees work on the TBM operating 24 hours per day. A total of 11 gantries will be assembled and connected together to form the 205m-long TBM. Several of the gantries weigh more than 400 tonnes. TBM Kirsten will excavate the 2.9km-long Emergency, Cable and Ventilation Tunnel (ECVT) to the power station complex and then continue to tunnel uphill at a 25-degree grade to create the inclined pressure shaft and meet up with the headrace tunnel (from Tantangara). A tunnel at such a steep incline is a world first. Significant progress at the ECVT portal has seen the excavation of 330,000 cubic metres of material to create a 25-metre high vertical portal face with rock bolts and ground support mesh installed. Work on the concrete foundations and slabs to support the TBM operations are underway and all services, power and water supplies are being installed. TBM FLORENCE At the Tantangara Dam worksite all the oversize, over mass cargo deliveries for TBM Florence (named after Australia’s first electrical engineer Florence Violet McKenzie), which will excavate the headrace tunnel, have now been delivered to site. The heaviest of these components was the
COOMA SEGMENT FACTORY Snowy Hydro’s new Snowy 2.0 precast segment factory in Cooma is now in full swing where 130,000 concrete segments are being produced locally for the pumpedhydro project. The segments will supply the three Snowy 2.0 tunnel boring machines as they excavate and line more than 27 kilometres of tunnels between Tantangara and Talbingo reservoirs. The total workforce for the batching plant and segment factory at full operation is about 110, with many of these roles filled by local people. About 120 people were employed to construct the facility. Snowy Hydro CEO and Managing Director Paul Broad said he was pleased to see many locals employed at the factory as part of Snowy 2.0. “Right from the start, we wanted to build this factory locally rather than import segments from overseas or interstate because it meant local jobs, opportunities and investment,” Mr Broad said. “So it’s with great pride that we celebrate the official launch of this critical facility for Snowy 2.0 alongside our principal contractor and factory operator Future Generation Joint Venture.” Up to 12 rings, each one made of nine segments, will be fabricated per carousel every day. The factory will produce 130,000 concrete segments in total to line the Snowy 2.0 tunnels. More than 14,500 rings will be produced in total, each 10 metres in diameter. To create the segments, raw materials are sourced from the local area to mix concrete within the batching plant, which is then transferred into the factory and poured into specially designed moulds every 10 minutes. In a recycling initiative, around 70,000 tonnes of slag - a by-product of the steel manufacturing process - is used to produce the segments. This reduces the amount of cement required by 40 per cent. With the use of robotics, the moulds progress along the carousel as the segments cure and finish. There is an onsite laboratory and testing to check the quality of every segment produced. It takes approximately eight to 10 hours to cure and de-mould each segment from start to finish, then they are stored for about two weeks before being transported via trucks
◼ BIG: Assembly of the cutter head on TBM Kirsten. PHOTOS: Snowy Hydro to the various sites as required. Once on site, the segments are loaded into the TBM’s and installed in the tunnels. The first segment factory carousel started production in July 2021 and the second carousel in September 2021. With two carousels running at peak production, 90 tonnes of concrete will be poured per hour. The robotic arms and hydraulic covers in the concreting station are key innovations and cutting-edge technology involved in production.

Serving as the Member for Monaro has been the honour and privilege of a lifetime. Some of my proudest moments have included delivering new and upgraded schools across the electorate from Queanbeyan to Jindabyne, education has been at the forefront of investment in Monaro. Then there is the exciting Special Activation Precinct for Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains, which means we will see the Snowies gain even more popularity as a year-round tourism destination. This is the investment of a lifetime.
THANK YOU
However, it is the little things, and the beautiful people I’ve met, of whom I now call friends, that have made being the Local Member so special. To the people of Monaro, thank you for the honour of representing you for the last ten years.

A Journey With A Difference TRAVELLERS are always looking for that journey with a difference and the Snowy Valleys delivers in spades. Your drive can be planned around the many great attractions. Here is the best of the Snowy Valleys, all mixed in with country cruising as part of your Snowy Mountains roadmap. ADELONG Known for its gold rush in the late 1800’s, this quiet country town offers country charm and a chance to relive the glory days of the gold fields. The Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins are a heritage industrial site where at its peak millions of dollars of the precious metal were extracted. Today you can wander through the ruins and read all about the history via the interpretive signage. On a warm summer’s day, be sure to pack the swimmers as the Adelong Creek beckons you and is a popular swimming location in the gently running waters. The remnants of the Reefer ore crushing machine are still visible to show just some of the scale or the operation. The Adelong Alive Museum in town also offers more history and stop at any of the cafes or hotels for lunch. BATLOW After being severely affected by the 2019-20 bushfires, the town of Batlow is finally returning to some normality as orchards and property are rebuilt. The resilience of the Batlow residents shone through in the bushfires, and if travellers can visit their town and purchase goods via the road stalls, it would be highly appreciated by all businesses. Summer is cherry season where in December you can find the juiciest and largest cherries. You can pick your own at some outlets if you choose, plus be sure to seek out all other specialities that are made from local products, including cherry pies. Wilgro Orchards and Mouat’s Farm Gate (see details page 43) offer some of the best local produce. In town the bakery offers great pies, the supermarket supplies for your camping trip and a few cold schooners at the Batlow Hotel beer garden are always encouraged. KHANCOBAN People who arrive here say why did I not know about this gem before. The small town is the gateway to the southern end

of Kosciuszko National Park and offers paradise by the lake. Stay at the Khancoban Lakeside caravan park and explore for days from the Snowy Hydro scheme, boating and swimming on the lake, fishing with great rewards of trout and all combined with a relaxed summer atmosphere. The town centre has been revamped with the Snowy Scheme display opening soon in the Pickled Parrot Providore café. See a diorama of the scheme, a model of Geehi Dam and all while you settle in for lunch. The display will also feature Murray 1 and Murray 2 power stations, have real-time screens to view Snowy Hydro’s operations and Snowy 2.0 information and video updates. TALBINGO This quiet town comes alive in summer as visitors seek the relaxed setting with nature close by. The Tumut 3 Power Station is a tourist attraction, and you can drive to Talbingo dam and take a swim. The 9 hole golf course will suit your recreation plus is a great dinner location. You will find a Snowy Scheme display at the supermarket where you can also stock up on items and purchase lunch from the café. Bring your mountain bike for scenic cruising and Kosciuszko National Park and Yarrangobilly Caves are a short drive and ideal for a day trip. TUMBARUMBA Tourists have been flocking to Tumbarumba since news of their great Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail has spread. It is not uncommon to see weekends much busier as riders enjoy the 22km each way trail, and then stay for lunch in the afternoon at one of the splendid café’s, bakery or even the pubs for a cold ale. Paddys River Falls is a must visit, just a short drive from town and easy access to walk to the falls. If there has been recent precipitation the falls will be powering and a great sight. On hot summer days jump into the rock pools below and cool off. The cool climate wineries have gained notoriety over the past decade as they continue to win awards for their products. See page 47 for a full review of where to visit.

Planning Continues For World Water Speed Record By STEVE CUFF SUPPORTERS of the world water speed record attempt by Dave Warby and his Spirit of Australia II jet powered boat will be anticipating the next testing venture at Blowering Dam at Tumut. During the winter months the boat has been idle in the workshop do to the various covid lockdowns and travel restrictions which have prevented any testing. Organisers are still conscious of the covid situation as they are required to be responsible for crowd control as it is their event. Crew chief Philip Frawley saying there is more than just running the boat for testing. “With covid we have other requirements that we have to fulfill,” said Frawley. The crew have been busy doing modifications to the boat after sustaining a split fuel tank on their last outing. They also had unexpected battery troubles they have investigated. Apart from these minor setbacks to the boat after the recent tail fin modifications,
the boat is now running as expected. “The handling of the boat when it was going was really good.” With the summer months so popular at Blowering Dam it is difficult to schedule public testing weekends at Tumut as the dam is frequented by a plethora of pleasure craft. An issue on testing days has been this pleasure craft who think they are well away from Dave and his jet powered boat. The ripples from other craft do cause problems. During the last outing this affected testing due to wakeboarders changing the water surface. “At 400kmh hitting a small bump that’s only 6 or 7 inches high there are ramifications,” said Frawley. Planning must be scheduled months in advance so now that lockdowns have eased the crew can look ahead with confidence. The next public outing on Blowering Dam is expected to be in late February or March 2022. If all goes according to plan and they produce good boat speed and more importantly with no major issues, they will then set out a plan to attempt the world record.

Vineyards Rise To The Occasion LOVERS of the Tumbarumba cool climate wine region will welcome news that vineyards are on the recovery from the 2019-20 bushfires which burnt vineyards plus smoke affected grapes limiting production. Wineries have now produced their 2021 vintage and the local wines are once again stocked in restaurants, local establishments and the winery cellar doors. COURABYRA WINES The Courabyra Wines cellar door have displayed the full house sign on several occasions since lockdown restrictions were lifted, the venue always attracting great visitation for not only their splendid wine, but for guests to relax and enjoy a superb lunch or dinner. Overlooking the vineyard, the cellar door has won numerous awards including the Australian Good Food Guide reader’s choice award for 2021 and is recommended
on Restaurant Guru for 2021. The cellar door is often booked out weeks in advance so plan ahead for lunch and tastings. JOHANSEN WINES Closed since the 2019-20 bushfires, Johansen Wines will reopen from the Tastebuds event in late October with regular summer weekend hours from 11am to 4pm for cellar door tastings. Describing the past 18 months, Tom Southwell said it’s been a long road to get back and to now show people their new wine. “We obviously weren’t able to make wines in 2020 and the new 21 vintage is looking stunning, so yeah, really exciting,” said Tom. During the fires they lost their entire mountain view paddock which has now been restored to 90% of original capacity. “It’s all new trellis system, irrigation systems, new wire, and had to rework every vine from the ground up. Our growing season has started and the whole place just looks amazing.” In November the cellar door will have a new deck where guests can sample nine different wines, some of which are exclusive to the cellar door only. Be sure to visit to taste flagship wines, the 2019 traditional method sparkling, chardonnay and pinot noir, plus resiling, pinot gris, chardonnay pet-nat, gamut and two different rose wines. www.johansenwines.com.au

I always thought I would use the tempranillo and merlot in some sort of field blend. When we found out this shiraz was available, I thought that would be ideal to blend it with.” They will look now to expand with their approved plans for a cellar door, residence with small commercial and two selfcontained holiday cabins. From the rugged beauty of the Kosciuszko National Park, the picturesque Snowy Alps and stunning towns like Braidwood, filled to the brim with history, there is no other place in the world like the Monaro. Serving as the Member for Monaro has been the honour and privilege of a lifetime. On 26 March, 2011 the people of the Monaro endorsed my vision for the region and gave me a mandate to make it a reality. More than ten years on and the Monaro is the best place to live, work and play. From the outset, education has been a key focus of mine. In Queanbeyan, we have seen significant upgrades to the both Queanbeyan High School and Karabar High School, $10 million worth of upgrades to Queanbeyan East Public School and delivered the Tirriwirri School, a new school for specific purposes. Monaro High School is in the midst of a major revamp with $47 million worth of upgrades, while Braidwood Central School has also undergone significant changes. Looking ahead, work is well underway to deliver new high schools for both the Jerrabomberra and Bungendore communities, a new primary school in Googong and a new education campus at Jindabyne. When I was first elected as Member for Monaro, our roads were in need of major work and I made it a priority to secure record funding for local roads to create safer and more journey for everyone. I have secured more than $200 million to upgrade Monaro roads including Bobeyan Road, completed Old Cooma Road duplication, open the new Charleyong Bridge and continued improvements to Monaro and Kings Highways. The iconic Snowy Mountains Brumby was saved when I legislated the Kosciuszko Wild Horses Heritage Bill 2018 and we will continue to find a balance between protecting the Brumbies and protecting the most sensitive wilderness areas of the Park through the Kosciuszko Plan of Management. Not to mention the exciting Special Activation Precinct for Jindabyne and the Mountains, which means we will see the Snowies gain even more popularity as a yearround tourism destination. However, it is the little things, and the beautiful people I’ve met, of whom I now call friends, that have made being the Local Member so special. Nothing is closer to my heart than the big hug and smile I received from Rosie Schenker when I delivered a renal unit at Cooma Hospital, so she no longer had to make long trips to Canberra. To the countless people I have met on this journey, thank you. Thank you for believing in my vision for the Monaro and for supporting me for all these years. It has been an absolute honour to serve you. I’m going to end with this quote from my maiden speech where this journey all started. Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it’s so important. monaro@parliament.nsw.gov.au www.johnbarilaro.com.au 213 Crawford St, (PO Box 998) Queanbeyan NSW 2620 Ph: 02 6299 4899 - Fax: 02 6297 9998 JohnBarilaroMP

Gran Fondo Snowy Classic CYCLISTS will be in preparation mode across the summer months in anticipation of the new Snowy Classic being added to the cycling event calendar in March 2022. Run by Bicycling Australia, the Snowy Classic will be the organisation’s fifth Gran Fondo after the Bowral, Noosa, Mudgee and Clare Classics, and is expected to quickly position itself as ‘Queen of the Classics.’ The event will reopen Jindabyne and the nation’s iconic Snowy Mountains region to an annual influx of cyclists, contribute significantly to the year-round economy and bolster the tourismdependent region. Making its debut in March 2022, the Snowy Classic will offer riders the opportunity to tackle true alpine climbs and European-style cycling right here in Australia. With two options - 170km or 110km courses - on fully closed roads, and with participant safety the number one priority, it will be the cycling experience of the year. Both rides start in Jindabyne and will tackle the famous race route via Rocky Plains, Berridale, Dalgety and the challenging climb up ‘The Beloka Wall’ before returning to Jindabyne. For those wanting the extra challenge of the 170km route, their race will take the next tough climbing leg to Perisher before returning to the finish line at Banjo Paterson Park. The Beloka climb is legendary as
one of the toughest climbs in the Snowy Mountains with a total of 296 metres climbed over 3.1km and an average grade of 10.6% and a maximum of 14.7% gradient. The rides will be conducted on closed roads and has the support of the NSW Government. NSW Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government was proud to support the Snowy Classic from 2022 until 2026, with the event expected to inject $4.16 million into the State’s economy across the five-year period. “We are committed to supporting regional events in a COVID-safe way. We want to see visitors continuing to enjoy our incredible destinations such as the Snowy Mountains, because we know that more event activity across our State means supporting local economies, creating jobs and boosting community morale,” Mr Ayres said. “We can’t wait for this event to kick off in March - with the region’s stunning scenery, unique wineries and distilleries, it will be an event not to miss for cycling enthusiasts across the country.” Founder of the Snowy Classic and Classic Series events, James Yaffa said he was thrilled to have the support of the NSW Government and is excited to see the popular Gran Fondo format expand to new frontiers. “This is particularly exciting as
the Snowy region continues to be more and more popular as a yearround destination for recreational sports,” Mr Yaffa said. “The Snowy Mountains precinct is simply stunning and offers so much for road cyclists. This new event will be a fantastic addition to our family of Classics!” With regional areas experiencing challenging times over several years now, Mr Yaffa said the core objective was to deliver a fun and safe event while helping the Snowy region deliver muchneeded tourism and ongoing brand marketing.

Pedal Power Popular In Snowy Mountains MOUNTAIN biking is the recreation of choice for the Snowy Mountains summer and the trail choices are plentiful. Riders who may be new to the region this summer will find trails everywhere, from easy rides to suit the family, interesting and adventurous intermediate options, plus challenging advanced rides for those with more technical skills. The signature cross country trail is the Thredbo Valley Track (TVT) which starts in Thredbo and winds all the way to Jindabyne via Lake Crackenback Resort with a total distance of 35km. The beauty of this track is the top 17km section from Thredbo to Lake Crackenback Resort is ideal for intermediate riders plus is the most picturesque section of the ride. Crossing the Thredbo River five times, you will find a great mixture of single track, river views, bushland, via two camping areas of Ngarigo and the Thredbo Diggings before arriving at Lake Crackenback Resort. The lower TVT section is much more difficult and very remote. Once you have started there are no exit points, just 18km of trail which includes rocky areas where more skill is required. This is not
for beginners. The trail finishes at Gaden Trout Hatchery where you can continue all the way back to Jindabyne via the Hatchery Bay easy trail. Riders looking for a full day trip can contact Snowlink shuttles to drop them at the start of the TVT for their ride back to Jindabyne. In Jindabyne, the Mill Creek and Tyrolean trails offer great variety of green, blue and black trails for those eager to explore more. For cruising trails in Jindabyne, the Lake Foreshore path is ideal, and it leads to the start of Hatchery Bay trail where you can do a 14km return loop on this meandering scenic single track that runs alongside Lake Jindabyne. A visit to Bungarra Alpine Centre in Jindabyne has a diverse 20km trail network. Daily, weekly and season passes are available at www.bungarra.com.au. At Cooma the Mt Gladstone trail network is an ideal stopover for a day’s adventure either on your arrival or departing the mountains. The trails have high praise from riders. Lake Crackenback Resort have their own mountain bike trail network with scenic rides within the resort and along the

Sacred Ride Expands In Jindabyne and Thredbo By STEVE CUFF THE Sacred Ride bike shop in Jindabyne has moved into a brand-new shop in Razorback Plaza, just a few pedals away from their old shop. The new Jindabyne bike shop is set to open early November. Sacred Ride will also have a shop in Thredbo for summer, taking over the Rip Curl store for the mountain bike season. (Rip Curl will return for the winter season) JINDABYNE BIKE STORE Shop owner Nic Davoli said he was excited with the new Jindabyne shop which has increased floor space dramatically for retail product, the repair workshop much larger allowing for four workstations and the rental section has been streamlined for easier registration and pickup. “Yes, bigger space, at least three times the size,” said Nic when describing the new premises compared to the old. “We can stock way more, that’s for sure.” Nic said the big game changer was being able to stock more bike choices for customers and an increased variety of mountain biking accessories.

Sacred Ride will also reveal a new website with all products available to shop online, plus rentals can be booked via the website. The website should be live in later November. “We are just starting fresh, everything fresh, everything will be smoother, new point of sale system and the website will be all new and in time people can buy and rent everything online.” “The whole setup will be much smoother, plus we are adding another location at Thredbo, so yes, exciting news.” Sacred Ride have also added to their workforce with Al Beck taking on a position of Business Manager. “This new area creates a lot of efficiencies that we never had before and space to move around,” said Al. “We expect to be able to handle customers better and quicker, have their bikes back to them earlier and when supply in the world comes back on track, supply their new bikes quicker.” THREDBO BIKE STORE At Thredbo, the shop will be stocked with similar product to the Jindabyne store, just on a smaller scale and will open for Saturday November 20. The shop is

The Snowline shop, next to the Discovery caravan park, stocks an array of water sports gear for purchase or hire and has a small fleet of mountain bikes for hire. All locations will be connected via a new centralised phone system, and each shop has an online booking system to allow people to plan and book ahead when the new website is live.

Jindabyne Trail Stewardship Disillusioned With Trail Progress By STEVE CUFF THE Jindabyne Trail Stewardship are a tight knit group of enthusiastic mountain bikers who have shown enormous generosity with their personal time to help develop and maintain trails in the area. It is therefore disappointing to hear that the Jindabyne Trail Stewardship (JTS) group feel let down by lack of progress and information forthcoming from Snowy Monaro Regional Council. Discussing with JTS President Craig Stonestreet, he presented several issues to Snowy Mountains Magazine of which we posed the question to Council for comment as to why progress appears stagnated. A key issue for JTS is the slow progress in terms of planning and implementation of the Lake Jindabyne Shared Trail Project which began in in early 2018. A Council spokesperson responded to questioning saying, a “DA expected to be submitted to Council in July 2022 (Design reviews and consultation Feb/March 2022)”. “Our Recreation Planner has been committed to this project, alongside driving and supporting all other recreational planning activity for SMRC (including the Cooma Sports Hub, Regional Trails
Masterplan, Playground Strategies and delivery). The project is now in delivery stage with Corporate Projects and a number of specialist contractors, to meet the, agreed with government, deadline of mid-2023,” said the Council spokesperson. Craig Stonestreet said with frustration he understood some slow stakeholder negotiations and slow approval process, but it would be nearly four years now. “Funding of around $11 million for this project was promised years ago with no tangible results so far. We have been told the Tyrolean to East Jindabyne section “will be built this summer” for the last three years,” said Craig. COUNCIL SUPPLIED INFORMATION: There are two funds supporting the development of the trail; Stronger Country Communities Fund Round 2 for the East Jindabyne Section. This section will go to tender in the coming months after a very extensive approvals process through the Department of Environment, Energy and Science (Heritage NSW) interrogating both environmental impacts and impact to any Aboriginal Heritage sites in the envelope of the trail design. This DA made it back to SMRC for Council
approval in August 2021 and was approved. Construction could not be undertaken until this approval was granted. The reporting and planning process through both local and state government took almost three years. We are now in a position to finalise the details needed for a competitive construction tender. The second fund supporting the trail is through Restart NSW Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund. This will fund 30km of new trail and upgrade 30km of existing trail, along with facilities to support a trail of this length (car parking, trail heads, toilets, water). While ground has not been broken, Council has commissioned surveys, undertaken Aboriginal Heritage Impact studies (for the purpose of permits) Environmental Assessments, Trail Design, Engineering reports on bridges and platforms, alongside ongoing consultation with landowners, Snowy Hydro Limited and NSW NPWS (southern). Work is progressing but is not immediately obvious to the community as construction is the last part. Commenting on the potential trail extension from East Jindabyne to Kalkite,
Council responded. “We have a concept design and, along with many other parts of the trail, this is subject to landholder and landowner negotiations and SMRC satisfactorily completing a number of environmental and heritage assessments. None of these elements are straightforward and the trail is not unanimously supported by the community, so it can take us time to find the most satisfactory outcomes with affected landholders,” said a council spokesperson. Craig said the “JTS have many members and volunteers who have extensive experience in the trail building industry, and have helped in the development, construction, and ongoing maintenance of every existing MTB trail in the region. Since its inception, JTS has provided thousands of hours of volunteer labour, or paid for local skilled labour out of its own funds.” “It is becoming increasingly hard to justify to ourselves and the many kind local businesses that have partnered and supported our work throughout the last seven years, to continue to support council and provide this free service when we don’t seem to be getting a great deal of support or inclusion in the planning process.”
PLATINUM PARTNERS
MANY THANKS TO OUR 2020/2021 PARTNERS
SOME OF OUR TRAILS CERTAINLY SUFFER FROM WINTER’S FREEZE AND THAW CYCLE. YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED OUR TRIAL OF ROCK ARMOURING ON THE TYROLEAN END OF MILL CREEK TRAIL? THIS IS AN EFFORT TO ENSURE OUR TRAILS ARE USABLE ALL YEAR ROUND, AND IT WAS PRETTY SUCCESSFUL. WE AIM TO INSTALL MORE OF THIS PRODUCT, BUT GOOD SNOW AT THE START OF WINTER AND THEN ANOTHER LOCK-DOWN HAS HAMPERED OUR EFFORTS.
GOLD PARTNERS
WHILST NOT OUT WORKING ON THE TRAILS THE JTS COMMITTEE HAS STILL BEEN BUSY, IN PARTICULAR PREPARING OUR SUBMISSION (WITH DABYNE PLANNING) IN RESPONSE TO THE SAP DRAFT MASTERPLAN. JTS SUPPORTED AN ALL-INCLUSIVE MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK IN WEST JINDABYNE THAT WOULD ALSO HOST TRAILS FOR WALKING AND RUNNING. WE BELIEVE THE PARK CAN BE ESTABLISHED WITH POSITIVE SOCIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND ECONOMIC OUTCOMES FOR THE REGION.

WE’RE PLANNING OUR SUMMER PROGRAM, INCLUDING A GREATER INVESTMENT IN VEGETATION MAINTENANCE IN ANTICIPATION OF ANOTHER SPRING OF HIGH GROWTH. VOLUNTEER TRAIL DAYS ARE GOING TO BE HELD ON 16 OCTOBER, 20 NOVEMBER AND 11 DECEMBER.
ALSO, KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR OUR QR CODE DONATION SYSTEM THAT WILL BE SHOWING UP ON SIGNAGE AT TRAILHEADS AND LOCAL SHOPS, MAKING IT

Alpine Prices Continue To Rise By STEVE CUFF TO say the property market has been hot in Jindabyne and Thredbo during the past 18 months is a huge understatement. The demand has never been higher producing fantastic results for sellers. Virtually all auctions have been attended by multiple bidders who are keen to invest or purchase a new home no matter how high prices are driven. Most properties are selling well above reserve. This demand has seen many Jindabyne sellers list their property and land to take advantage of the record prices. People who purchased land in the past ten years have made great profit reselling, plus recent property purchases have been resold for great gains in short terms.
Gordon Jenkinson from Kosciusko First National Real Estate in Jindabyne said the covid situation over the past 18 months has been a direct correlation with the higher-than-expected prices achieved as people’s work patterns have changed. “They are all here working remotely, so they are making just as much money as they were or taking slightly less but having a much nicer lifestyle. If it wasn’t for covid it wouldn’t have happened,” said Gordon. In previous years many of the properties purchased would have entered into the holiday rental market with owners only using their property for their own short holidays. Recently though more of these properties find their new owner utilising the property for more of their own lifestyle use and less in the holiday market.

Asked whether there was still upside into such a hot Jindabyne property market, Gordon suggested there was in certain situations. “I think there will be some properties that offer outstanding views and lakeside positioning that could still attract great prices.” Gordon also commented younger people who may have moved away years ago for work have now returned and purchased and are starting families. “We have fantastic education facilities now for kids, there’s more opportunity with our connectivity here, they can work remotely.” Rural property with small acreage and
attractive homes are in demand with prices all reaching well above reserves. They have ranged from 1.8 million to over 3 million during winter sales. Apartments of any size have not been left out of the buying spree, especially renovated properties. All have been quickly snapped up for prices most residents would not have expected to see in Jindabyne for years to come. The winter season has also resulted in strong sales in Thredbo with properties selling as fast as they can be listed. Sellers have seen a dramatic increase in village apartment prices from previous years while chalets in Crackenback Ridge and Woodridge continue to be in strong demand.
