HANDLER’S HOLD:

THE Victorian Government’s Rural Zone Reforms, approved by Minister for Planning Matthew Guy on August 14, have been met with a mixed reaction from the VFF and shire councils. The ďŹ nal stage of the Zone Reforms, to be gazetted on September 5, means that Victoria’s six rural zones now include the Farming Zone, Rural Living Zone, Rural Activities Zone, two Green Wedge Zones and the Rural Conservation Zone which, between them, cover the vast geographic majority of the state. Mr Guy said the purpose of the new rural strategy is to make it easier to start and operate rural industries and to give rural and regional councils much greater exibility in managing their own municipalities. “The Coalition Government’s Rural Zone reforms will ensure the structures of country planning zones are determined by country people,â€? he said. The key changes include: s ENCOURAGING AGRICULTURAL USE OF LAND

particularly in the Farming and Green Wedge Zones; s ALLOWING COUNCILS TO CONSIDER MORE ‘off farm’ income streams on farms, such as farm machinery repair businesses; s INCREASING THE PERMIT THRESHOLD FOR extensions to farm out-buildings from 50 m2 to 100 m2; s REMOVING THE NEED FOR A PERMIT FOR primary produce sales, rural stores and most rural industries in the Rural Activities Zone; s ALLOWING COUNCILS THE ABILITY TO DE termine smaller lifestyle lots in the Rural Living Zone where land has already been taken out of agricultural production; s REMOVING ONEROUS RESTRICTIONS ON crop structures, to ensure protection from hail and other elements; and s PROMOTING FARM GATE SALES SUCH AS THE sale of fruit, vegetables and other produce. However, the reforms have only gone part of the way in solving the rural planning puzzle, according to Gerald Leach, VFF land management chair.

Home, heart and a MANY tourists heading to Inverloch and nearby Andersons Inlet from the Melbourne area, are directed by their GPS units to turn off the South Gippsland Highway at Bena and travel south along Andersons Creek Road, to save them time negotiating Korumburra. It is a windy, scenic, unclassiďŹ ed sealed road and in summer it carries a considerable number of people going to the sea. That volume of holiday mode travellers, which would not have eventuated before the advent of GPS, has prompted Burke and Bronwyn Brandon to build a sheep cheese factory and shop beside the road on their new farm. Mrs Brandon said she couldn’t guess how many tourists used the road but had often noticed several convoys of six or seven cars in a row going past in summer and long time resident neighbors too, had commented on the greatly increased trafďŹ c ows. She said she and her husband Burke looked far and wide before they bought the 190 acre property two years ago. “We had a 10 acre farm at Tyabb when we started milking but decided we needed more land. “We looked as far as Bairnsdale, but this property ticked most of the boxes.â€? Mr Brandon is, with his father Trevor, a cheese maker for Red Hill Sheep Dairy on the

perhaps one third of the building’s cost. According to the Federal Government’s Australian Tourism Export Council website, “Tourism industry operators can apply for matched dollar-for-dollar grants of between $15,000 and $100,000 for innovative and high quality tourism projects. Mrs Brandon said there is nowhere near Jumbunna where visitors will

be able to look in cheese make rooms and cellars and then see and maybe feed lambs running in the paddock. In late June, the couple had just ďŹ nished shearing – “wool is not worth a lot but it does pay for the shearingâ€? - in the old cow come sheep dairy and had 90 ewes due to lamb before the end of August, with another lot of 30 to 50 younger ewes due to lamb in October.

EARTH SURGEON: Peter Matthews, Kongwak, was shaping the earth for the Brandons’ new farm gate sheep cheese factory and restaurant to be open by the end of the year.

Rarely do ewes need assistance at lambing, but Mrs Brandon was not looking forward again to 10.30pm jaunts to check lambing ewes on cold winter nights. This year she will trial New Zealand made Woolover natural thermal protectors or felted wool coats for lambs, for those born on particularly wet and cold days. They cost $8 each for a pack of 10.

Mornington Peninsula. Mr Brandon senior, a microbiologist and teacher, and his wife Jan, established the business in 2000 and taught his son the elements of cheese making. But until they build the cheese factory on Andersons Creek road, Jumbunna, Trevor has to take the milk to Red Hill to make the cheese. Earthworks for the new factory, albeit delayed by 85mm of rain, were well under way when Southern Farmer visited the farm in late June. But they hope to have the complex, a 10 by 10m make room, a couple of maturing cellars, a coolroom and restaurant/shop, ďŹ nished by the end of the year and be producing cheese on site. To help finance the building, the Brandons were recipients of a Tourism Industry Regional Development Fund (TIRF) grant and they hope that will cover

and we have one that has produced quads unaided,” she said. To reduce the workload, she advertised 50 to 60 week old male lambs for sale at $30 a head and the demand was so great she couldn’t produce enough. She said one major area of demand seemed to come from travelling animal farms. “It’s a challenge rearing them, because East Friesians can be a bit dainty and if you challenge them too much they’ll turn up their toes. “So we’re putting a couple of Dorset rams over them – they’ve got lovely natures - to toughen them up a bit,” she said. The Brandons got their original sheep from an East Friesian stud at Poowong that has been going for 15 years and there is another, Prospect at Kyneton where they have sourced sheep as well. In previous years the sheep have been milked for eight months, but with a split lambing this year, Mrs

Brandon said they might be able to extend that to 10 months. It takes about the same time to milk a sheep as a cow, despite faster pulsations of 120 a minute instead of 60 for cattle and necessary udder massaging as well. “Then there is much less to show for it too,” Mrs Brandon said. In the dairy there are 12 a side DeLaval herringbone bails they bought from a former sheep dairy, Piano Hill at Labertouche which imported the bails. Their best sheep produce around three litres a day at peak yield and average between 1.5 and two litres a day. But there is much more cheese forthcoming from sheep’s milk than from a similar amount of cow’s milk. “We’re making about 10t of cheese a year now from cow and sheep milk and last season we produced 25,000L of sheep’s milk which yielded about 5t of cheese,” she said.

She said they relied strongly on keeping their sheep healthy by feeding them a range of minerals, which she said reduced lambing difficulties. “Apple cider vinegar mixed with lime, seaweed, salt, rock dust and molasses, provides some of the most important minerals but particularly potassium,” Mrs Brandon said. As well they have free access to zinc, copper, sulphur and diatomaceous earth in containers under cover in the paddock. She said preferences varied from day to day. But yellow mouths from sulphur seemed to dominate the milking flock. “It is funny to see them coming in for milking, with either yellow or blue mouths and occasionally they blend and have green mouths,” she said. In an effort to keep the farm as natural as possible, the only fertiliser they apply is pig manure. To establish more shelter belts Scouts planted 1000 native trees last year and they will follow up this with about 2500 more this winter. The Brandons estimate ultimate carry capacity – half the farm is leased at the moment – at about three sheep to the acre. Apart from the twice a day milking, a challenge for Mrs Brandon last year was hand rearing 150 lambs. “We have a few ewes that regularly deliver triplets

NEW high performance Italian ryegrasses will be released at the Elmore Field Days. Stephen Pasture Seeds in conjunction with Agricom are releasing the latest in plant breeding Italian ryegrass varieties at the upcoming Elmore ďŹ eld days. Knight Italian ryegrass is a high performing diploid Italian bred to replace the well-known industry benchmark Crusader Italian ryegrass and is ideal for winter grazing and high quality silage and hay production. Knight’s quick speed out of the ground makes it an ideal cultivar for a pasture renovation phase where an aggressive competitor to weeds is required. Its fast establishment with strong autumn and winter yields makes

Knight a good choice for creating a valuable feed wedge leading into winter. Trials at Shepparton and Ballarat have shown Knight has consistently yielded higher than Crusader with outstanding growth over winter. Low aftermath seed head for a diploid Italian ryegrass enables Knight to retain good summer feed quality in the appropriate environment. It has good second year production with strong winter growth in environments that allow Italian ryegrasses to go into the second year. Thumpa is a high yielding tetraploid ryegrass which is a cross between top performing selections taken out of summer surviving Italian tetraploids. Thumpa’s strong seedling vigor is a valuable

CHOICE: new varieties of Italian ryegrasses will be released at the Elmore Field Days.

trait if autumn sowings are late due to the season. This has been seen in Australian late sowing trials compared to other tetraploid Italians already on the market. The late owering nature of Thumpa also makes for a high quality late season forage, ideal for winter grazing, silage and hay. Both Knight and Thumpa are ideal for short term pasture before re-sowing paddocks back into perennial pastures. Both will also assist in boosting a

farm’s recovery after dry conditions. Pastures degraded by winter grazing and the dry conditions of 2012-13 offer farmers a unique opportunity to use these exciting new Italian ryegrasses in their pasture renovation program to produce high quality and high quantity feed. Make it a priority to come and see the Stephen Pasture Seeds team at Elmore Field Days on October 1 to 3 or call Mark Palmer, Stephen Pasture Seeds northern agronomist on 0400 895 650.

A changing landscape prompts By DAVID PALMER THE imminent opening of the Pakenham bypass, spurred Megan and Ron Asling into action, to expand their two acre farm in Pakenham into a much bigger agricultural enterprise. “We thought the bypass would open this (Jindivick) area up and we wouldn’t then be able to afford to move, Mrs Asling told Southern Farmer. “In fact that was the case although we got in

here just in time. That was eight years ago, when they bought their 70 acre farm at Jindivick, about 30km east of Pakenham. House values on farms around Jindivick have gone up about $300,000 in six years: that’s an increase from a third to a half of what they were before the bypass opened, she said. They have spent some of that saving recently by totally renovating the house. “My husband’s dad’s a

builder so we’ve mostly only had to pay for materials,â€? Mrs Asling said. But only the original roof, wall frames and oor remained, when they started the renovation. Rainfall ranges between 800 and 1200mm a year but the Aslings were unaware of what that meant and planned to build a shed in a gully until a neighbor said it would inevitably ood. In fact it has ooded three or four times since they arrived, Mrs Asling said. Once the Aslings moved to their former dairy farm, they were not slow to expand operations. Initially they bought six stud Murray Grey cows and calves from Bev and Dick Pendlebury at Bass, by passing muster with Mr Pendlebury, who said he wouldn’t sell if he didn’t like them. Later they bought 14 commercial females from Phil Roden at Jindivick and a few from Melinda Kent at nearby Labertouche. Now the Aslings run about 50 females and sell surplus commercial animals in cryovacced packs, at weekend markets. “We still have all the original stud families, except one, which always had male calves,â€? Mrs Asling said. She said next year would be their biggest in terms of numbers on the farm; it was supposed to be this year but it didn’t happen because of a non performing bull. Their last bull, although he appeared to be working, did not get any cows in calf. “We discovered that fact, when only nine out of 48 cows were in calf, when

we pregnancy tested them in April,â€? Mrs Asling said. And those positive pregnancies only resulted, because they had artiďŹ cially inseminated nine females, after the bull before the dud had broken down. The NSW stud breeder who supplied the non performer replaced him – he said it was the ďŹ rst bull of his not to produce a calf and so now most will not calve until autumn, sired by the replacement. The AI’d nine will calve in September. Mrs Asling said about 50 cows was enough because they are part time farmers: she teaches at St Pauls school, Warragul while her husband is a draftsman in Pakenham. She said maybe in a decade or so one of them will not be working full time but in the meantime they “want the farm to produce enough income to justify us being hereâ€?.

“We’re here for the lifestyle and the hard work is the bonus, she said jokingly. The meat side of the business, Jindi Natural Beef, started with “being sick to death with the poor prices being paid in the markets. Because they were able to look after the cattle from birth to death, the reason for killing and marketing their cattle soon developed into being able to control the ethical treatment of their animals. “Some people can’t cope with the idea of feeding animals to then kill and eat them, but they’re not pets and we know we have looked after them as best we can, Mrs Asling said. And off farm, they are delighted with Radfords meatworks at Warragul, which holds their cattle in covered yards and feeds them hay before they are killed.

“I think they are one of the best meatworks in Australia, because they are environmentally conscious with water recycling systems and proper weather proof holding yards for the cattle, Mrs Asling said. Carcases then go to the nearby Longwarry Meat Safe, where they are hung for 14 days and sometimes longer. Once jointed, cuts are Cryovacced which makes the meat a bit more expensive, but means buyers can see the meat more easily and it lasts just in a refrigerator for up to six weeks, Mrs Asling said. Longwarry Meat Safe stores the meat for them until they arrive with their mobile coolroom as they travel to markets. The Aslings started selling their beef online and at markets, at the beginning of the year as Jindi Natural Beef and will assess

the viability of the direct meat business at the end of 2013. Normally they sell the meat in ďŹ ve or 10kg packs – a mix of steaks, roasts, hamburgers, sausages, mince and stir fries - at various markets. Currently they go to the close by Rokeby (every second Saturday, but not in winter) and Jindivick markets (every ďŹ rst Saturday) and Mornington on the second Sunday of the month. “I’ve tried to get into some of the Melbourne markets but there are other people selling beef there and spaces are not available,â€? Mrs Asling said. They sell quarter, half and full carcases to order to a lesser extent, because either people can’t afford to buy a whole carcase, or can’t afford to have a freezer that big, Mrs Asling said. „ Continued page 7

Grass tetany is not a problem in the area although the Aslings do provide mineral blocks to overcome nutritional imbalances. An essential though for calves, is vitamin B12 and selenium injections, at weaning. As well they drench young cattle a couple of times until they achieve immunity at two or three years of age. They do not yet have time to show their stud cattle, although 11 year old daughter Georgia attended a handlers camp at Cape Woolamai, on Phillip Island. The Aslings are, however, involved in the 15 member strong Gippsland Murray Grey Association group, and support breeders at promotions like Farm World.

“A full carcase should last a family for about a year so it is a lot of meat.â€? They charge $12 a kg for half and full carcases and $14 and $15 a kg for ďŹ ve and 10kg packs. She said some buyers had difďŹ culty coming to grips with the concept of farmers selling meat from their own cattle. “Some think we’re just gatherers of meat and can’t quite understand that it takes three weeks to deliver big lots. “We have to have an animal killed, then age the carcase for two weeks and then joint, Cryovac and pack the meat for delivery,â€? she said. Southern Farmer suggested that the Aslings must calve all year around so that they could regularly supply meat. But normally they calve once a year and to cope with demand for meat, they slaughter at different weights. Currently they have about 30 steers and heifers aged between 10 and 11 months to meet that demand. Mrs Asling said she was a big believer in using the whole animal, to the extent that if one had a really nice hide, “we have it tanned at Ballarat and offer it for sale with our meat at farmer’s marketsâ€?. She said it was an expensive process - about $500 - so there was not a big hide market. Fertilising the farm has not been a priority for the Aslings as they have been able to rely until now, on residual fertility applied by earlier owners of the farm. But in spring they will apply compost to a couple of steep paddocks, which they believe will give their pasture a boost, where grass growth has not been as strong as on the rest of the farm.

HIDE AND SEEK: The markets provide an outlet for exceptional Jindi hides which are tanned at Ballarat.

Murray Goulburn cuts 72 jobs

Look to USA for answers

MURRAY Goulburn Co-operative Co Limited (MG) is cutting 72 positions across its processing facilities. MG said the losses, effective late this month of - 38 positions at Cobram, 15 at Leongatha, 8 at Kiewa, 4 at Edith Creek, 4 at Rochester; and 3 at Koroit - will not impact MG’s productive capacity and services to customers. It said the cuts were part of a commitment to improve efficiency, productivity and cost competitiveness.

Financial incentive the key to young farmers It was North America where Damian’s big ďŹ nd came, when he discovered a loan program from Farm Credit Canada called Transition Loans. Under the program, when a young farmer buys a property, Farm Credit Canada will go as guarantor for the money that’s outstanding to the existing owner of the farm. Over ďŹ ve years, Farm Credit Canada will guarantee that owner will get his money for that asset – so if it’s a $500,000 farm, they will get paid $100,000 each year from Farm Credit Canada. “Now the advantage to me as a start-up farmer is I only pay principal and interest on the amount outstanding to the owner,â€? said Damian. “So in the ďŹ rst year the owner gets $100,000 of his $500,000 and as the young farmer I’m only paying principal and interest on that $100,000. “That helps a huge amount with cash ow and that’s what is really key to a young farmer, just protecting that cash ow situation.â€? Damian believes a bank should take on this transition program in Australia, but also sees merit in setting up a co-ďŹ nancing program where money from agriculture is invested back into agriculture to assist young farmers with equity requirements. “I mean get into agriculture and progress through, so I’m talking stock, lease agreements, machinery –

anything that’s fairly manoeuvrable right through to land purchases,â€? he said. “Wherever the young farmer wants to go I’d like to see them supported and encouraged with ďŹ nance if that’s how they see they want to go.â€? Damian says after travelling around the world on his NufďŹ eld scholarship, he holds grave concerns for the future of Australian agriculture without a viable entry system for young people. “I think what you’re going to ďŹ nd, and what I found through my research in the EU, is they’ve got such an old age population that it’s really going to hinder them in the next 10-15 years if it’s not hampering them now,â€? he said. “We’re in the same situation‌something is going

to have to happen with young farmers coming through in the next 10-15 years or we’re going to end up with a very old farmer population. “These older farmers have a huge amount of assets in agriculture and they’re going to have to get passed on in some way, somehow at some stage and if the young farmers aren’t coming through and in a position to buy that asset or progress through or manage that farm, the value of that asset will reduce and that’s not good for anyone. s .UFl ELD !USTRALIA WILL announce its scholarships for farmers aged 28 to 40 to travel the globe investigating an agricultural research topic, at its annual conference in Perth on September 19.

IT’S an ever-present issue – how to deal with the ageing farming population and make it possible for young enthusiastic farmers to enter the sector. Dairy farmer Damian Murphy, from Dumbalk North in Gippsland, believes that thanks to a Nuffield scholarship, he may have found the solution. “I’ve seen people come into the industry and they’ve just found it so hard to get ďŹ nance for things that would allow them to grow their asset and progress in the industry - it is becoming a real hurdle, and almost exclusive,â€? he said. “It was almost a case of you could only get a start and continue in agriculture if you had the family farm or the family connection to keep on going through and I’d like to see that change.â€? Damian set off on his scholarship in 2012 to investigate what young farmer ďŹ nance schemes exist around the world, particularly in places where land is more tightly held than in Australia. “That’s one of the key things we had to look at – if we don’t have that manoeuvrability, how do young people keep on coming through,â€? he said. “They might start on a share and progress through onto a lease and maybe a marginal farm or something like that in places like Ireland and France they don’t have that option, whereas in Australia we’re lucky we still have that option.â€?

a month in maintenance. Similarly, a self propelled, German made windrow turner, uses 40L of fuel an hour and costs about $2000 a month to operate. Mr Downs said it was unfortunate the German machine was designed for a cold climate and is not ideal in the Australian climate. “We have to be always playing with it to make sure it works properly; for example it has an oil heater where we want an oil cooler,” he said. Incoming green material is often interspersed with incompatible rubbish which has to be extracted by hand: a wheel loader spreads new arrival material across the ground and a couple of people go over it by hand, removing anything which has not lived before and therefore will not become compost. “The two things we like the least are glass and concrete,” Mr Downs said. He said the grinder and the turner both in turn reduce glass to smaller fragments which SITA’s screener has great trouble extracting. Sampling of the finished product shows glass to be less than 0.03 per cent of the final product though. “In fact you’d find more glass in your backyard than you’d find here,” he said. “Wire, like old power cables, is a problem with the grinder too. “Although they don’t do as much damage, they wrap around the innards of the machine and take a lot of effort to remove.” SITA has a bit of an issue too with green bins although they are no problem to extract. A collection of 40 to 50 mostly contorted green bins, testified to the fact that green waste collecting

RECENTLY Southern Farmer had the opportunity to see a commercial composting facility at Epping on Melbourne’s northern outskirts. SITA Organics leases 2ha from the Shire of Whittlesea for its operations and draws green waste from northern and north eastern Melbourne suburbs at the rate of 65,000t a year. The waste is largely delivered by council and private contractor trucks which have collected it from residential streets. Once at SITA, it is scanned for extraneous material, is ground, windrowed and turned to tight specifications for several weeks. Finally it is screened - about seven per cent is screened out - tested to see that it conforms to AS4419, the relevant Australian standard and sold. Screening produces various sizes for use on farms, domestically and as bio filters, said organics operations manager James Downs. Most of SITA’s urban customers want 8mm or finer compost but at the other end of the scale, it sells a considerable amount of 19mm compost to farmers. Mr Downs said many grain farmers had their own B double trucks which they used to deliver grain to Melbourne. “So because we’re less than five km from the Hume Freeway, they can easily call in here and we can inexpensively fill their trucks with compost to take back to their farms.” Market price is around $30 a tonne. “Everything we process goes through a massive grinder at considerable cost. “For example it consumes 100L of fuel an hour and costs about $9000

trucks often accumulate bins as well as green waste. Windrows are monitored for moisture and temperature every day. It is critical that the bulk density of the material is right because oxygen and moisture content and the temperature must be right. Oxygen content needs to be about nine per cent, temperatures between 55 and 67 degrees and moisture between 40 and 50 per cent and it is challenging to keep the windrows, straight, uniform and looking pretty, Mr Downs said. “So the turner is key to those values because by fluffing up and spraying water on to windrows as needed, at certain times, those values can be kept within desirable limits.” Excess green waste from Melbourne goes into an old quarry at Point Wilson near Geelong where it is helping to rejuvenate the site. SITA also has a composting plant at Geelong which takes the sludge from the bottom of the Shell refinery’s oil storage tanks and turns it into a usable product. But the compost is not sold and goes onto pasture and trees in an area of land owned by Shell But Mr Downs said that judging by the extra growth in that area it works well as a growth promotant. Compost Victoria’s Slobodan Vujivic said recycling green waste was becoming a bigger and bigger business. He said the government would sanction the construction of another three composting facilities around Melbourne over the next five years. Earlier this year Veolia opened a new facility at Bulla capable of composting 85,000t of green waste a year.

Paving the way to better soil quality FARMERS want more information on soil improvement. That was the message The Victorian No-Till Farmers Association gained from its 11th annual conference at Ballarat in July. The ‘All About the Soil’ conference in July attracted some 250 farmers, industry leaders, scientists, agricultural students and natural resource management representatives from across Victoria and interstate. National Soils Advocate and founder of Australia’s not-for-profit organisation ‘Soils for Life’ Major General Michael Jeffery AC, AO (Mil), CVO, MC (ret’d) opened the conference, highlighting his focus on getting city people to think more about where the food they eat comes from and how it’s grown. He said food producers played a key role in spreading that message. Keynote international speaker Dr Jill Clapperton, who farms in Montana and is recognised world-wide for her soil research knowledge and skills, extended her visit to be part of Vic No-Till farm tours and soil sampling in Gippsland, Yarrawonga and the Wimmera and Bendigo areas. Her presentation centred on ways to provide the right conditions for soil biology to improve yield and profitability. She said growing the right variety

at the right time was the key to addressing soil constraints. Four leading Australian farmers also spoke including Western Australian farmer Nick Kelly who is putting into practice a range of techniques to improve soil biology by overcoming compaction issues, reducing evaporation and planting summer cover crops. Wimmera farmer Geoff Rethus also spoke. Conference organiser Kerry Grigg said it was great to see so many new faces as well as the people who had been attending the conferences since Vic No-Till formed 11 years ago. “The conference theme ‘All About the Soil’ drilled in on the fact that soils are what farmers think about, talk about and want to know more about,” she said. “We had a fantastic response and going through the feedback demonstrates that Vic No-Till was on the right track with the speakers and information it put forward at the conference.” Ms Grigg said the conference brought together a vast amount of quality and current information on soils – the foundation for growing better crops and improving productivity. “It was great to see new faces come along as well as the return of

our regular attendees who have been coming since the first conference,” she said. “The diverse mix of speakers, including four Australian farmers, gave attendees a lot of information to take home with them.” A group of enthusiastic, likeminded farmers who had been experiencing the benefits of no-till farming for many years formed The Victorian No-Till Farmers Associa-

tion 11 years ago. The association, which has a network of more than 500 farmers across Victoria, aims to provide quality information to members and other interested people through regular info days, farm tours and special events including its annual conference. For more information visit www. vicnotill.com.au or follow them on Facebook for regular updates.

Rural zone reform gets mixed reaction From page 1

“There are pieces still missing,” he said. “The government has done the right thing by removing planning laws that forced farmers to get a permit to put up crop support structures, orchard netting or sell produce from their farm gates. “However, it has not heeded our calls to remove red tape for intensive industries, nor has it agreed to our call to allow horticulturalists and other farmers to build or expand storage buildings beyond 100 m2 without a permit.” Mr Leach also said the VFF opposed the decision to allow tourism that is not “in conjunction” with agricultural uses in the Farm Zone. “We’re fine with winery restaurants and farm tourism, which is linked to agriculture, but the government wants to end that link,” he said. He added that could lead to conflict between farmers and tourism operators in what is meant to be a commercial farming zone. CEO of the Moorabool Shire Council, Rob Croxford, welcomed the reforms, however. Moorabool, which covers areas around Ballan and Bacchus Marsh, contains large areas of broad-acre cropping, grazing and orchards. “As a council covering a large agricultural area, we welcome greater flexibility for primary producers and business operators in regards to generating income from their land,” he said. The Southern Farmer contacted several other councils in our reading area but all said they were still working their way through the document and were not in a position to make any comment at the time.

Wagyu: not to be overlooked By PETER GROVES

BEEF BEAUTY: A picture of well marbled Wagyu beef takes pride of place at the front gate of Blackmore Wagyu Beef.

come stagnant, but it certainly still applies to most forms of farming. At weaner sales, calves by high priced, high Breedplan performance bulls, often make no more per kilogram than those by average to poor performance data bulls. High performing bulls can be four times the price of poor performing or non performance measured bulls. Saleyards are very effective clearing houses for livestock, but their ability to add value does not have the consistency required for profitability. The message from the above is that Australian beef needs to be branded, to become profitable for producers. There is no disputing that our growing markets in Asia are going to ask for more information about what they are buying. The Australian lobster price is a good example of how this fast growing market will pay for what they identify as being a premium product. China for example imported

is comprehensive and detailed, and it is backed up by new technologies including ultra -sound measurements. All this information does not change the fact that all animals when hanging on the rail, regardless of breeding and performance, are red and white once the hide is removed and all make the same cents per kilogram. Australian farmers, when it comes to management and embracing new technologies, are some of the best on the globe. Conversely, most are not skilled at marketing their product. In the case of livestock, their marketing sphere often does not extend past the local saleyards. The extreme case of this, is the observation that some East Gippsland mountain cattle farmers assess the price they receive for their calves by comparing what the price per herd was at the same sale last year. The “price takers, not price makers” line, has been used so much in agriculture it has be-

are as follows. A line of 140 Wagyu cross Angus mixed sex calves, all from two year old heifers, sold at 15 months for exactly $1000 per head. The price was full weight at the nearest scales to the farm less five per cent with the freight paid by the purchaser. This producer has been using Wagyu bulls over his heifers for at least 15 years as a standard management practice, because Wagyu calves are noted for their easy calving. Steers from a draft of 29 mixed sex Wagyu cross Angus, all with milk teeth, weighing up to 500kg and averaging 460kg, sold for $3/kg and heifers for $2.80. That was an average return of $1358 per head landed at Dalby, Queensland. F1 Wagyu progeny are slower growers, possibly up to 10 per cent less in weight gain than the standard breeds. It is important that they are fed to keep gaining weight, which applies to all young

a record tonnage of Australian grain fed beef last month, to clearly indicate that its taste for premium beef is growing. So because Wagyu beef in the eyes of Asians is synonymous with superior eating and because Australian farmers can breed and produce F1 Wagyu without deviating too far from the management practices they use now, it is a natural breed to use to capitalise on this demand. The potential for Wagyu to be marketed as an Australian export beef brand in large quantities has been too long overlooked. Wagyu when crossed with breeds other than European ones, will command a premium price from three buyer companies now feeding and processing Wagyu in Australia. This premium is currently up to $1.30/kg, or about 60 per cent more than the current mixed sex generic price, being paid by the market for British and Euro bred animals of equivalent age. Two recent sale examples

MM UNI TY

A FARMER who won a substantial amount of money in a lottery, was asked by his neighbor what he intended doing with it. His reply was that he would keep on farming until it was all spent. There would be reason to be amused by this reply, were it not that this inference is applicable to most Australian family farms today. Their survival is now dependent on income from off farm work by at least one family member. The reason being that in most instances, the farm income line and operating cost line, have crossed to the negative and continue to diverge. Combine this with the resulting drop in current rural land values and there are very real reasons for concern. Out of the three main forms of farm production in Australia, apart from dairying, beef farmers are suffering the most. When one considers that it requires from $9000 to $12,000 in capital - conservatively $1000 for the breeding cow and at least $8000 for the land she grazes on - and the dollar return for a mixed sex weaner this year was about $600 before management costs were paid or on the unlikely assumption of 100 per cent calving and calves weaned, the current dilemma most beef producers are now facing becomes more apparent. Australian beef is in the main a generic commodity. Unlike lamb it is still not branded for age. A consumer could be eating a primal cut off a 10 year old cow believing it is yearling beef. Sale catalogue information available for seed stock buyers,

ruminant animals. Any loss suffered by slightly slower growth, is more than adequately compensated for by the price premium at delivery for both male and female progeny. Like progeny of most breeds when crossed, Wagyu F1 can be more excitable when worked in the yards. This is a handling issue that most experienced cattle breeders soon overcome with good management practices. Taking Wagyu to the F2 stage, by breeding from F1 heifers, has proved to be of questionable profitability. The breed is genetically lacking in milk, probably because of the many years of early weaning management in Japan and the extra premium paid by feedlots for F2s does not justify the extra time required to grow them to feedlot weight. F1 Wagyu breeding is “price making” and an opportunity for all beef and dairy breeders to consider. There are good Wagyu genetics available in Australia that are well endorsed by the three main participating feedlots. The asking price for Wagyu bulls is about the average price being paid for Angus bulls and compared to prices paid at some Angus bull auctions, the Wagyu bull price is much less. The rewards are there for beef farmers who are prepared to look beyond past “stuck in the groove” practices. As with everything, making the decision is the most difficult part. Challenges of early lactation Correctly balancing energy intakes to avoid over-feeding and future problems THE importance of correct management and nutrition during early lactation is well recognised. During the first 60 days of lactation, peak milk production is reached and the cows are prepared for joining. During early lactation milk yield increases rapidly but dry matter intake (DMI) is limited by rumen capacity. The demand for energy is therefore higher than the amount of energy consumed. As such, cows mobilise body fat and lose weight to provide the energy needed to support their genetic potential for milk production. Thus, in early lactation, 17-19 per cent CP is recommended to support higher levels of milk production and sufficient energy is needed to prevent extreme losses of body condition. Other challenges that exist during early lactation are a potential reduction in dry matter intake, milk fever, fatty liver, ketosis and reduced immunity. These challenges tend to reduce cow fertility by lowering conception rates. Cows losing more than one body condition score (BCS) between calving and first service have a first service conception rate of 17 per cent, compared to

HUNGER GAMES: There’s fine line between over feeding and meeting higher energy needs during early lactation.

53 per cent for cows only losing 0.5 to 1 BCS (Butler and Smith, 1989). Milk fever results from low blood calcium levels. It is often referred to as a ‘gateway’ disease, due to the potential flow on effects of increasing the likelihood of other early lactation associated problems. Such problems include mastitis, ketosis, retained placenta, displaced

abomasums and uterine prolapses. Ketosis occurs when the liver has low or no carbohydrates, which is a common challenge in the first few months after calving. The low levels of carbohydrates lead to mobilisation of fat which in turn leads to the production of ketone bodies. Ketosis reduces DMI and increases risks of other diseases, such

as displaced abomasums. Increased energy demands of early lactation combined with the insufficient DMI ability makes the cow mobilise fat reserves which are oxidized to energy in the liver. As levels of energy rise in the liver a signal is sent to the brain decreasing the cow’s appetite, further compacting the problem (Allen and Bradford, 2008).

Goals for Phase 3: s MINIMISE LOSS OF BODY condition in order to increase fertility for joining, s INCREASE $-) IN ORDER TO maximise milk production, s INCREASE CARBOHYDRATE AND mineralisation of diet to reduce common health issues of early lactation. Early lactation diet targets: s CONSUME FOUR PER CENT BODY weight in dry matter daily, s PER CENT PROTEIN s QUALITY OF -* -% kg DM, s MODERATE .$& AIM FOR 1.2 per cent of body weight as NDF). The objective during early lactation is to increase DMI as rapidly as possible while maintaining a ration that is high in carbohydrate, has moderate NDF and has a starch of high QUALITY Supplying minerals is important during this phase to correct deficiencies that may have occurred during colostrum production. A well balanced and good QUALITY DIET IN EARLY LACTATION will ensure that your herd reaches optimal peak milk production. Remembering every extra 1L at peak production can mean an extra 200L during the length of the lactation.

Local farmers to discuss future of milk A PANEL discussion about the future proďŹ tability of milk will be a highlight at the South Gippsland Dairy Expo. Organised by the Strzelecki Lions Club, the expo will celebrate 14 years on Wednesday, September 25 and Thursday September 26, 2013 at the Korumburra Showgrounds, Korumburra. Panel members will be made up of local dairy farmers discussing ‘Better Milk Price, More ProďŹ t – or is it? Are we just chasing a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow?’. The session will be held at 11am on the Thursday and is supported by the South Gippsland Shire Council and Rabobank. Major sponsor Devondale/Murray Goulburn and MG Trading will have a suppliers lounge with Devondale products and meet the Devondale/Murray Goulburn ďŹ eld services team, and the MG Trading stores advice and services will be on display. During the past 12 years, the Strzelecki Lions Club has distributed over $290,000

When faced with the challenge of improving milk protein yield and maximising profits, energy and crude protein levels alone do not give enough information to make the correct decisions on feeding. You need to know what makes up your energy and protein. To find out more about maximising milk solids production, talk to the team from Reid Stockfeeds on site 69 at the South Gippsland Dairy Expo.

Dairy farmers looking for cost savings Mouthpiece Vented Technology is delivering the goods for local farm ALL dairy farmers would agree that achieving greater efďŹ ciency improvements across their business is the key to reducing costs. However, ďŹ nding the best products or production systems can be a difďŹ cult and time-consuming process. Look at the choice of dairy liners currently on the market – Round, Square, Triangular, Vented, Non Vented, Round with sleeve‌ the list goes on. Some companies claim beneďŹ ts such as faster milking, lower somatic cell counts, improved teat health, better ďŹ tting to the cow’s teats. So, who do you believe? Pneutech Dairy manager Chris Nisbet agrees with the dilemma farmers face. “Yes, it’s a difďŹ cult process, however, farmers must make good, informed decisions during these tough economic conditions,â€? Mr Nisbet said. Pneutech Dairy has spent the last 1218 months slowly introducing a unique product in Australia – Milkrite Triangular

liners with its innovative Vented Mouthpiece design (only liner in Australia with this feature). “We wanted to allow farmers time to test the new liners and make a decision for themselves, Mr Nisbet said. “The feedback has been very positive and now it’s time to spread the word. Experienced local farmer Andrew Gaul runs a 40 bail rotary dairy, milking over 320 cows twice per day, and he has just installed his third set of Mouthpiece-Vented Triangular Liners. Lower somatic cell counts, improved teat health and faster milking he expected, however, what impressed him the most was how well his cows milk out. He noted some cows only required one trip around instead of the usual two and can’t believe how dry the teats were when the cups are removed. Mr Nisbet said that because the air is introduced at the top through the vented mouthpiece there is reduced

splash back on the teat – limiting the opportunity for cross contamination. “A recent Belgian study showed reduced clinical mastitis in farms using the Mouthpiece-Vented Triangular Liners, he said. “We are receiving the same results in Australia and continue to monitor the mastitis results closely. Pneutech Dairy will be at the South Gippsland Dairy Expo at Korumburra on September 25-26. MOST farmers and contractors know about the nutritional aspects of silage as derived from the silage analyses carried out by various feed testing laboratories. Their reports will uncover the facts and figures about the dry matter and moisture content, digestibility, metabolisable energy, crude protein and neutral and acid detergent fibre levels of the sample sent in for testing. Some laboratories will provide more data, often times resulting in requiring a nutritionist’s help to decipher the reports. These reports inform us of the feeding quality of the silage and we can then decide how much to feed, whether we need to alter a ration according to the reported nutritive value, how much moisture is in the silage, how much to charge when selling silage, and so on. However, on too many occasions, farmers have offered cattle medium to high quality silage, containing no obvious signs of mould, only to find that their animals have refused to eat it until the following day or worse still, have turned their noses up at it completely. So, what’s going on here? Most likely, the silage in question has undergone a poor fermentation, resulting in poor palatability. In other words, the end product is not inviting to the animal’s taste buds. Poor fermentation can arise from many causes. Among those are reasons such as forages ensiled with low plant sugar levels, those harvested while too wet, wilted too long, stacks which were poorly rolled and/or poorly sealed, bales left unwrapped for too long, harvested forage containing soil or effluent. Silages such as these will usually have an unpleasant odor resembling a sour, vinegar or rancid butter smell. Silage nutritive value also decreases in the above scenarios. In most feed test analyses the fermentation

aspect is not reported. There are, however, two extra tests which can indicate the fermentation quality of your silage that have been around for several years. This test will tell you how well your silage has fermented (or ensiled). There will be extra cost as these are individual tests carried out using manual labor on the fresh sample. The two tests are the pH (acidity) and ammonia nitrogen as a percentage of total nitrogen (NH3-N) content tests. For most laboratories, they must be specifically requested on the input form, as it is not done via the quick and efficient Near Infra-Red Spectroscopy (NIRS) equipment used on the dried sample. But, these two tests can be useful for farmers and animal nutritionists in making better silage feeding decisions or to help them solve intake problems. s Testing for silage pH This relatively inexpensive test is most accurate in silages with dry matter contents below approximately 35 per cent, so is not as accurate for baled silage. A low silage pH indicates that the fermentation process was dominated by the desirable lactic acid bacteria. High pH results when the fermentation is dominated by undesirable bacteria and indicates the silage has lost dry matter and energy during an inefficient ensiling process. This poorer fermentation will also result in the production of organic compounds which causes the palatability issues for animals. s 4ESTING FOR !M M O N I A . I T R O G E N !MMONIA . Ammonia-N (NH3N) of the total nitrogen measured is a reliable indicator of silage fermentation quality although it comes at a relatively higher cost. An NH3-N level of less than 10 per cent of total nitrogen indicates a good fermentation and under about five per cent, very well fermented silages. Poorly fermented silages have high NH3N levels and the true protein of the plants has suffered extensive degradation into undesirable non-protein nitrogen compounds such as free amino acids, peptides and even ammonia during the ensiling process.

Pa n e l c h a i r Ke i t h Pengilley said the annual spring tour is one of the most important activities undertaken by the panel. “The tour provides panel members with a valuable opportunity to interact directly with farming systems groups and grain growers on-farm, Mr Pengilley said. “This contact allows panel members to get a greater handle on local issues, which means we can make better informed recommendations and decisions about research priorities. Mr Pengilley said the panel tour would involve visits to research facilities and trial sites so members could ascertain first-hand information about the impact and relevance of GRDC-funded research and development in the regions. HAY AND SILAGE

September, 2013

Be prepared for silage season Weather, manual observations, key to good harvest By FRANK MICKAN, Pasture and fodder conservation specialist, Department of Environment and Primary Industries Ellinbank

MOST farmers have exhausted their stocks of silage and hay this year, forcing many to buy-in hay at high prices and sometimes dubious quality to fill feed gaps. They would be grateful for a reasonable winter so far, as pasture growth has been relatively good.

Farmers will need to grow, graze and/or conserve as much high quality pasture as possible this spring. However, farmers will be looking to restock their fodder supplies this season and higher milk prices offer a glimmer of hope to help get on top of costs to date and

achieve similar yields to the N applied paddocks. This will result in substantially more dead leaves and tillers in the base of the sward and much slower, lower yielding regrowth. This is drastically compounded if shut up is even longer, due to farmers chasing bulk versus quality. s #ONTRACTORS Start talking to your contractor now so he can plan who to get to first, weather permitting. Discuss the logistics such as which area is likely to be cut and when it may be ready. Fix any access problems such as rough, narrow laneways and gateways. Discuss the ‘what ifs’ when the unforeseen happens. Also, have a strong agreement on payment details. An early payer will usually get the contractor’s attention and keep your harvest needs near the top of his list. If payment is an issue, be up front and stick to what is negotiated. Contractors have large bills also. s %QUIPMENT It’s maybe obvious to many, but surprising how many bits of equipment need some sort of service, maintenance or repair too close to the start of harvest. Some parts may need to be ordered in and may take weeks, not days to arrive, not good when chasing quality. Be proactive and replace suspect items now, to avoid being let down

in the middle of harvest. s 3ILAGE ADDITIVES Most silage additives (mainly inoculants but there are other types) from reputable companies have a place in today’s silage making. They are particularly useful for mown material that is still slightly too wet after two to three days wilting and where rain may be threatening. Apply an additive and harvest as soon as possible. By day three quality is being lost anyway and if rained on, will drastically increase quality and dry matter losses. Note:The application rate is based on fresh weight of forage and slightly too wet forage is very heavy. Although additives are not necessary ideal harvesting conditions, they are usually financially beneficial because they encourage a faster, more efficient fermentation resulting in higher quality silage. s 3TORAGE Have stack bases cleaned, if not cemented, grade their surface to give a fall. Have plastic sheets and stretch wrap plastic on hand ensuring the latter is stored in a cool place till needed. Avoid rolls rolling around in ute/truck trays as the films are easily punctured. Even a small hole can lead to large silage, therefore milk income losses. Seal the stacks airtight. Achieve this by laying gravel/sand filled socks around the stack perimeter. fodder conservation costs for this spring. Hopefully, the winter continues to be kind to us and we will head into a silage friendly spring with good pasture growth and weather to favor early silage harvesting. Sticking to a suitable rotation length before now should see you with a good pasture wedge and this will spring board you into spring. If not, spring will start later for you and silage yields may be lower, requiring longer shut up to get reasonable bulk which will most likely result in poorer regrowth. Below are a few things to consider from now on. s &ERTILISERS Address the fertility of your paddocks destined for silage or hay, so pastures are not ‘leg roped’ by a nutrient deficiency, but also to avoid applying nutrients needlessly. Soil test in early spring and apply phosphorous, potassium and sulphur as needed in a mix with or without nitrogen (N). This year, seriously consider applying N to boost pasture growth for grazing and silage/hay cuts. Applying N will actually encourage vegetative (leafy) growth more so than reproductive and stem growth. Apply about 100 kg (46 kg N) to 150 kg (70 kg N) urea. However, silage cuts should be at/just past grazing height to produce best quality silage plus get fast, high quality regrowth while maintaining pasture density. The N will increase pasture growth rate so allow three to five weeks (depending on growing conditions). Don’t make the mistake of applying N to enable you to cut very high yields as silage quality will be down somewhat due to the dead material in the pasture base, but more importantly, regrowth will be less, slower and result in lower pasture density. The secret here is faster growth and some carryover of the N will also encourage faster and better regrowth. If no N is applied shut ups may need to be longer to

base are not airtight and the silage wasted instead of producing milk, would have easily paid for the socks. Patch holes as soon as possible using silage specific tape. Before applying the tape, ensure the area to be patched is clean, cool, dry and apply color tape to similar color film. Consider the new oxygen barrier (OB) type films which are available in one step or two step systems. The OB film is at least twenty times more impervious to oxygen moving through the film than the traditional white/black films. s 3AFETY Be very careful of machinery operating nearby and watch out for operators with their minds on the phone and not the machine. Loaded carts and balers on hillsides are very heavy and may not need much of a hole to flip them over, nor to lose traction when heading down slopes. When on a main road, assume the person in the car behind has not seen your turning indicators or flashing light on top of the tractor. I have heard of too many near misses and accidents from this oversight. When working at night, be very mindful of blinding lights in the eyes from approaching vehicles in the paddock or the stack. Many accidents happen at night due to tiredness and dangerous situations not seen, such as dropping a wheel over the stack edge, etc. Keep children well away from all operating machinery and activities. s #ONSIDER YOUR NEIGH BORS Try to place the storage site well away from neighbors’ houses if possible. Following good silage making principles will result in a sweet-smelling silage and less cause for grief. Trying to keep the storage site cleared of smelly mud/ silage mixes and spoiled (rotting) silage waste will also help out here.

THE Booloola Sheep Stud was founded as a Corriedale Stud (Flock No 337) by the late R H R Baker at Barringhup in Central Victoria in 1934. Today, the Booloola Stud still exists at Baringhup, but as a White Suffolk Stud (Flock No 403) with the founder’s great grandson Shane Baker and his wife Amber as stud masters. In addition, Shane and Amber established the Loddon Park White Suffolks (Flock No 803) in 2012 based on Booloola bloodlines in the names of their daughters Rory and Remi. The transition from Booloola Corriedales in 1934 to Booloola and Loddon Park White Suffolks of the present day covers two intervening generations of the Baker family. Loddon Park Corriedales (Flock No 2062) was established in 1966 by R H R Baker’s son E M Baker as a daughter stud of the Booloola flock and is currently managed by

Booloola White Suffolks was established in 1998 by Peter and Maree, but passed on to Shane and Amber on their return from a number of years working in Western Australia in 2012 as part of the family succession plan. The current Booloola White Suffolk Flock consists of 190 breeding ewes, while the Loddon Park

White Suffolks has 50 breeders. Booloola sells rams at one and a half years of age at the stud’s on-property sale in October each year. “But it is our aim to have rams at a saleable age as lambs,” Shane said. Booloola started competitive exhibiting at the ASBA Sheep and Wool Show before it moved from the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds to its present

location at Bendigo Showgrounds in 1999, and, over its short history has enjoyed success at the ASBA and regional sheep shows, the latest being Champion Ewe at the Ballarat Sheep and Alpaca Show in late July this year. HEADLINES continue to be made at the Pipkorn family’s Detpa Grove White Suffolk ram sale each year, and not without reason. Short term fads always attract a few unsuspecting buyers, but to achieve long term high demand you have to have a premium product. The breeding results purchasers are getting from the rams and ewes Detpa Grove sells is what attracts buyers to keep coming back. Their top end stud sales make the headlines, but the number of commercial prime lamb producers who are prepared to travel to Jeparit each year to secure some of their industry leading flock rams is arguably the

stud’s best endorsement. Without sound commercial industry relevance and focus, the demand for top end genetics that stud breeders have been queuing up to purchase would soon wane. Top genetics will perform in a wide variety of environs and repeat commercial buyers converge on Detpa Grove, from high rainfall southern areas up to the Mallee. Generation turnover also plays a big part in the Detpa Grove success story. Each sale group has been bred from the highest possible performance genetics with acceptable phenotype and with extensive use

of AI and ET (including JIVET) in their breeding programs. At their 2013 annual sale on Thursday, October 10, approximately 180 Designer Genetics rams and 70 ewes will be offered. A quick glance at their 2013 ram group shows rams with weaning weight EBVs up to 11.36, post weaning weights up to 17.71, eye muscle depths up to 2.90, culminating in carcase plus indices up to 212.52 and Lamb2020 indices up to 115.10. In fact their top 50 young rams have an average C+ index of 195.43; a figure many studs do not achieve with any of their rams.

Poll Dorsets

SHEEP SALES

September, 2013

Rare opportunity serving flock is being dispersed in two stages, presenting a fantastic opportunity for stud and commercial producers alike to get access to elite genetics in the Poll Dorset breed that would not normally be available. The 2013 annual on-property sale will be held as normal on Thursday, October 3. On offer will be the entire 2012 drop of rams. Obviously no young rams will be retained as would have occurred in past years had the stud been continuing beyond 2014. In February 2014 all the sound mature aged mated ewes and the mating sires will be offered. However, some of the older drop ewes that may struggle to be in top order by then may be open to private sale negotiations beforehand rather than these being kept for the auction. Finally in October 2014 all the 2013 drop rams and ewes will make up the final stage of the dispersal. Gloroy is not only one of the very oldest Poll Dorset studs in the country,

having been founded in 1956, but also one of the most successful, with hundreds of stud rams being sold into other studs. Colin and Jenny Harris are going out right on top. Their current leading sire, Gloroy ‘White Caviar’ is rated by Colin as the best ram he has bred. On Lambplan he is also on top, being the highest ranked sire for Trade$ index nationally. His 2012 drop sons being offered this October are outstanding and should attract special interest from stud and commercial prime lamb breeders. From a performance perspective there is probably no better sire of rams suitable for the production of domestic trade lambs. Other high ranking sires include Valma, Rannoch, Ulandi Park, Majardah and Lambpro rams plus numerous homebred rams all ranked highly on Lambplan. Opportunity like this knocks only rarely.

Ageing stock needs consideration THE age of livestock directly influences their ability to maintain condition, reproduce and survive difficult conditions. Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) district veterinary Officer, Natarsha Williams, said animals with worn teeth were unlikely to effectively utilise pasture or supplementary feed, regardless

of quality or quantity provided. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, livestock owners have legislative responsibilities to ensure their stock do not become distressed or disabled. For further information, contact a DEPI veterinary or animal health officer.

IN its 50 plus year history, Glory Poll Dorset stud has tremendous success by being in tune with, and breeding for commercial industry needs. Today’s producers are relying on earlier growth supported by objective data and easy care attributes and it is here that Gloroy Poll Dorset stud principals Colin and Jenny Harris have concentrated their focus in recent times. Gloroy has been very much at the forefront of the objective breeding revolution and has continued to lead with a very strong selection emphasis on the Lambplan Trade$ index. While they have always been very strong in their selection for clean points and sound structure and have won numerous championships, they moved away from extensive showing emphasis a couple of years ago and have since placed more focus on the measured performance of their Poll Dorsets. An offer of excellence a new on-property record, but also a new breed auction record price in this country. That is the background to the Kurralea genetic strength in Poll Dorsets. Meanwhile Ben Prentice has applied the same principles to his later developed White Suffolks. “We try to encourage commercial clients to choose a ram that suits their enterprise and marketing objectives rather than one particular breed, especially considering the variance within a breed is often greater than between breeds,” Mr Prentice said. This has been supported by many of their commercial clients who select rams from both breed drafts. The Prentice family’s White Suffolk sire Kurralea 100120 is regarded by them as the bestWhite Suffolk ram they have bred. His first sons averaged $6000 last year. More are available this year, along with more sons of Warburn 100186 and the great Detpa Grove 060520. In the Poll Dorsets, Valma 090244, Kurralea ‘Big Game’ 090527 and Ulandi Park 080185 have particularly impressive sons in the sale team.

The Kurralea’s annual onproperty sale is on September 24, with some 280 Poll Dorset and White Suffolk rams on offer. “Rams with frame, high muscle and leanness, combined with easy care func-

tionality are the type that commercial breeders need and want for increased efficiency and profitability and to open up more marketing options for their progeny; and that is our breeding focus,” Mr Prentice said.

KURRALEA Poll Dorset and White Suffolk studs based at Ariah Park in NSW have been a mecca for astute stud and commercial breeders nationwide for well over two decades now. The stud, developed by the late Jim Prentice and his wife Kim and now run by Jim’s son Ben and his wife Lucy, is renowned for the big powerful and high yielding rams it produces. Structural excellence is the stud’s highest priority, then outstanding growth rates with excellent outside muscling are given selection priority. Kurralea ‘Five Star’ was the ram that really put Kurralea on the map and was used so widely via semen that he effectively changed the type of the breed. Rams of his frame size do not usually have extreme muscling at an early age. In that respect he was one of those rare curve-bending sires with the added bonus of extremely clean points. In 2005 Kurralea set a new Poll Dorset breed on-property sale record price when it sold a ram for $26,000. That record stood until last year when Kurralea’s Adelaide champion ram sold for $28,000, which is not only

Signature event not without support

By DAVID TREWICK, president of the Elmore Field Days committee products and services to show farmers, specialist enterprise operators and those who live on and enjoy small acreage opportunities. Continuing to provide the facilities that provide comfort and effective demonstration areas for our exhibitors in particular is an ongoing focus for my committee. We continue to expand the features of our major agribusiness pavilion. In coming years we will have additional undercover display facilities and amenities that will also support our visitors to the Elmore Events Centre. We also continue to develop our general site

facilities, services and our underfoot conditions. The official opening will be held on Tuesday, October 1 at 2.00pm. As I write this welcome letter we have just experienced a run of late winter rains, which interspersed with a few warmer days has provided a good seasonal outlook. Irrigators have dams that are close enough to full, our crops will have had a good start and the price outlooks for most rural commodities, especially livestock and grains, are looking positive. The dairy industry, which has experienced many problems, has also seen an overdue increase in milk prices so there is some positivity in the outlook for that important regional sector. The recent fall in theAustralian dollar exchange rate has also revived our export market opportunities, so on a whole we are anticipating another positive year. My committee continues to focus on providing an exhibition that is relevant to and informative for all members and ages of the community. Our general interest pavilion and marquee events are always extremely well supported by exhibitors and

have something to show and interest everyone. Our shearing shed activities are also a continuous source of information for our sheep and wool producers and particularly in showing what the value adding and consumer sectors of the market require. Our in-ďŹ eld demonstrations continue to expand in machinery types and provide useful insights into the latest machine performances. I am sure that everyone who attends Elmore Field Days this year will leave feeling they have learned something new with the potential to add value to both their lifestyle and rural business endeavors. Finally I would like to commend all those people in our local communities, on our farms, our rural support businesses and in local government and in the government sector who have contributed so much over so many years to help us reach our 50th annual event. And a special thank you to my fellow committee members for the hours they contribute on what is now a year round project to successfully deliver our three days in October each year.

Help and assistance in so many ways has always been forthcoming whenever and wherever

it has been sought after and I think all of us can look back with a sense of satisfaction on

how the Elmore Field Days have evolved and expanded over the past half century.

OUR 50th annual Elmore Field Days will be a signature event for our exhibitors, the farming and regional communities that support us and my own committee. We have been fortunate to achieve this milestone and it reflects the signiďŹ cant energies that have gone into making our annual event such a success over half a century. We are fortunate to still enjoy the support of and guidance from a number of our original founders and those who have helped in official or volunteer capacities over the past 50 years. There are a number of us now involved who now represent the third generation of the farming families who conceived and created the Elmore Field Days all those years ago. For 2013 we are looking at another successful event. We have seen excellent support and repeat site bookings from numerous exhibitors, so another fully booked out event is in prospect. In addition we have a number of new exhibitors who will have something different, informative and relevant in terms of

Top-class machine to sew seeds of success Every farm can improve their pasture and therefore their productivity.

ACCORDING to the team at Graham Wood Machinery, the best way to establish pasture is by placing the seed in contact with the soil evenly spaced over the whole area, not in rows. And they believe the best machine for this task is the pasture renovator, the Hatzenbichler vertikator. The vertikator levels, harrows, seeds and rolls to press the soil around the seed for optimal germination all in one fast pass. The machine is able to broadcast seed just as effectively on rough rocky country or river ats and is as useful for both pasture management and renovation as it is for sowing summer fodder crops such as lucerne, brassicas, and millet into fully cultivated soil. Graham Wood Machinery owner Graham Wood said that the natural way for pasture seed to germi-

between the rows will allow weeds to grow with obvious loss of production. “Apart from the time and effort required to sow pasture, the cost of quality pasture seed needed for a total re-seeding is in the vicinity of $100 to $200 per hectare in high rainfall and irrigation areas. “With this kind of ex-

Mr Wood said that by using the vertikator, when germination occurs a blanket cover of new pasture seedlings ensures fast total establishment of new pasture, which helps to suppress weeds and bring pasture into full production much earlier. “No one has a perfect mix of pasture species right through, Mr Wood said. “Every farm can improve their pasture and therefore their productivity. “With a vertikator this task is fast, accurate and very easy, he said. The perfect tool for sheep operators TECHNOLOGY is lending a hand to help sheep farmers make immediate decisions in the yards without having to go back to the ofďŹ ce to look up records. According to Sheepmatters’ consultancy principal Anthony Shepherd, Gallagher’s new HR4 hand held EID tag reader and data collector is the perfect tool for sheep operations. “It’s perfect,â€? Mr Shepherd said. “For instance, I index all my own wethers, plus those of my annual, on-farm clients, for eece value. On my own property, I have every single animal ranked from one to 2000. “On the HR4, it comes up in

a different color, in regards to what traits you want to bring up against that sheep. “I put the sheep in four different groups from the top 25 per cent, which was coded yellow, to the bottom 25 per cent, which was red. “For farmers who don’t have a sheep auto drafter, they can simply go along with the HR4, bring up the color, and they can see a list of which sheep are in that category — very handy, if, say, you want to draft off the bottom group. Alongside his consultancy, which offers on-farm services locally and advice to sheep farmers nationally and globally via the phone and internet, Mr Shepherd also

runs 2000 Merino wethers on his home property. He said the HR4 reader was ideal because it collected data, not just electronic identiďŹ cation (EID) numbers, making drafting decisions in the yard quick and easy and making recording new traits simple. “I can bring up an individual animal’s history, and I can also record a new trait,â€? Mr Shepherd said. “If I’ve just done pregnancy scanning, and want to put that trait in, then instead of having the TSi and an HR3 hand-held reader, I can just do it with the HR4. “I do a lot of numeric records, and the HR4’s updated software is perfect for that — whether

it’s to record twins, singles or dry with pregnancy scanning, or condition scores and eye muscle. “It’s endless and perfect for commercial sheep operations. “It’s a very intuitive, good little system. “It’s got serious legs for sheep farmers who may not have a TSi or a Sheep Auto Drafter. “This tool is all they will need to have excellent electronic records. The HR4 will be available for a hands - on demonstration on the Gallagher site at Elmore Field Days, and is available to purchase through all Gallagher rural retailers. of farmers in our Recharge conditioning program are getting eight to 10 years from most batteries. The 500 millilitre farmer park is economical at only $4 per car battery or $7 to treat an N-70 battery. The 2 litre commercial pack is more cost effective at $3 per car battery as part of an Elmore Field Days special. “As Recharge is acid based, it is dangerous goods and expensive to freight so the only way we can sell it is directly and it is far cheaper at field days, Mr Anselmi said. “CRT is also no longer available, so it is now a ‘show only’ product and we can treat sealed batteries.

SULPHATION is a major problem with lead-acid batteries on farms but there is a solution thanks to Recharge Battery Revitalizer. Recharge Battery Revitalizer principal, Gerard Anselmi, said he has come up with a solution that protects batteries enabling them to last for eight to 10 years. “All batteries sulphate, Mr Anselmi said. “You buy them with sulphation and they only get worse till they die. “Recharge Battery will dissolve those sulphur ions back into the electrolyte to hold the charge again. “The battery regains its capacity and stops corrosion of lead plates and a lot

LUCAS Mill firmly believes in providing high-quality products at affordable prices. Founded on the intention to expand the horizons of landholders and small-medium forestry operators, Lucas Mill was established with the objectives of developing a timber-milling machine that was simple to operate, affordable without compromising quality, and versatile with regards to its ability to be used in any environment. These goals have led to the development of a machine that is effective, economical and only lim-

Lucas Mill’s marketing manager, Karen WardTrabant, said that in the current economic climate, business owners and individuals are on the look out for creative ways to enhance their income earning capacity. “One of the simplest ways to do this is to assess how you can capitalise on the resources you have access to, in response to a specific demand for a product,” Ms WardTrabant said. “Many people still love timber products, whether domestically for furnish-

Waterpool continues to make a splash ENSURING the ethical and transparent trading of water for all water users, Waterpool is certainly making a big splash in the Goulburn Valley. Ten months ago a group of Goulburn Valley farmers came together and formed a co-operative to offer a water trading service that includes credible brokering for both high and low reliability water. With an evergrowing list of buy and sell offers that are updated regularly on Waterpool’s website, the cooperative continues to go from strength to strength thanks to the dedication of its members, who also happen to be the shareholders of the company. Operating out of Kyabram, Waterpool is believed to be one of the first of its kind in Australia. Waterpool’s chief executive officer, Peter

Lawford, said that in the co-op’s infancy it consisted of a group of like-minded water users seeking to fill a void in the water price discovery. “Today it is comprised of 50 foundation members and a list of ordinary members that will soon surpass 400, Mr Lawford said. “It has been the investment of these foundation members and their belief in the primary objectives of Waterpool, together with the ever-growing support of its ordinary members that has guaranteed the success of Waterpool to date. “Waterpool strives to provide a start to finish service for their clients’ trading their permanent entitlements and we encourage everyone to visit our site at Elmore Field Days, he said. Dumac pumps still running on original design

Elmore Field Days – 50 years in the making ELMORE has gained recognition as one of Australia’s premier agricultural field days with a rich 50 year history. The first Elmore Field Days were held in October 1964 after a voluntary committee organised the first comprehensive display of farming equipment and services alongside the Campaspe River. The permanent site now has a developed cost approaching $2.5 million and is being continuously enhanced by the construction of additional buildings for both the public and exhibitors, provision of additional

services including equipment demonstration areas. In the past few years a bi-annual Demonstration Day, devoted to tillage, cultivation, spraying and fertilising and other input handling has been successfully staged on the Field Days site. A distinct advantage of the site is the adequate space available for crop trials or other in field demonstrations. This is both seasonally relevant and of practical benefit to farmers in the region. It also compliments the seasonal focus on hay and silage production

September 2013

equipment, which is a predominant seasonal activity in the region at the time of the Field Days each October. An invitation is extended to companies or prospective exhibitors with interests in this sector to participate. The committee is determined to remain relevant to its original purpose and requests that all new exhibitors demonstrate a definite relevance to agriculture before their acceptance. Aside from this purpose, a waiting list of potential exhibitors is normally created each year as the site typically books out shortly after applications close.

A WASTE disposal pump mainly used for dairies, abattoirs and wineries that was released in 1974 by Dumac Distributors has been so successful that today it retains the main features of the original design. The Ruffy pump has a two inch BSP outlet with column lengths to suit pit depths from 760 millimetres (mm)

to 1.83 metres. It has a large open steel impellor with a heavy walled cast iron casing. According to the Australian owned and operated company, the suction on the Ruffy pump is unique in that it is from above the casing and when it is in use there is a negative pressure in the column, therefore it is not required to have seals.

The Ruffy range of pumps is most suitable for hard or abrasive solids or large volumes over shorter distances with low power requirements and minimal maintenance. The most common applications are in dairies, abattoirs, wineries and in recent years, some mining applications. Dumac’s other wellknown pump, the Filter Cut comes in two outlet sizes and has an external agitator blade that is attached to a 75mm extended impellor nut, which are both made from case hardened steel. The Filter Cut range of pumps is most suitable where there are softer solids in suspension, heavy sediment or high heads. The most common applications are in piggeries, abattoirs, wineries and food processing plants or similar operations. None of the pumps will pump plastic bags or bailing twine, but under normal circumstances they will not damage the pumps. For more information phone (03) 9761 5115.

Community groups improving the environment drumMUSTER helping rural towns fundraise The money went straight back into communities in the form of upgrades to parks, new sporting equipment for local teams and better services for hospitals and charities. Victoria drumMUSTER consultant John Knight said that community groups are passionate about drumMUSTER, not only because it helps fund their projects, but also cleans up the land. “We tend to see a huge groundswell of support for drumMUSTER once a group takes over, mainly due to the fact that groups actively seek out ways to collect drums and have strong relationships with farmers,â€? Mr Knight said. “The program has been so successful because we work closely with groups and councils to ďŹ nd a way that will work for everyone. “As long as drums are rinsed clean by farmers, and groups are inspecting containers correctly, drumMUSTER is exible,â€? he said. Since 1999, drumMUSTER has collected more than 21 million drums nationwide. That represents more than 26,000 tonnes of waste avoiding landďŹ ll and being recycled into new and useful things like plastic cable covers, wheelie bins and pipes. Weedwakka offers stress free maintenance WITH warm weather following the good rainfall over the winter, grass and weeds are already starting to grow rapidly and you are most likely dreading the idea of having to battle with the nylon cord on your brushcutter. Thorne Engineering has come up with a stress free option to the hassle of using nylon cord and conventional steel blades. For many years the small engineering company near Canberra has been developing and manufacturing the Weedwakka, a cutting attachment that fits onto straight shaft brushcutters. Thorne Engineering general

manager David Thorne said the MultiCut Weedwakka has flexible nylon blades that cut cleanly through much heavier vegetation than nylon cord will handle. “The blades are clearly visible when rotating, and can be used around trees without damaging the bark, Mr Thorne said. “The MultiCut is ideal for cutting along paths, walls and netting fences, as it eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord. “When the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools. For heavier vegetation such as blackberry, the Heavy Duty

Weedwakka can be used. The hardened steel blades will cut anything from grass to thumb thickness woody weeds, and it never requires sharpening. “If the blades strike a rock they are able to deflect, greatly reducing kick back, and minimising stress on the brushcutter, Mr Thorne said. “This makes the Heavy Duty Weedwakka ideal for clearing scrub in rocky country. The cost of both Weedwakka models is $55, with both available at Elmore Field Days 2013 at site 35. For more information visit www. weedwakka.com.au.

AN empty chemical drum may not mean much to most Victorians, but for some passionate volunteers across the state, it’s a vital source of funding for their community. Charities, CFAs, Lions clubs, sporting groups and Landcare groups in rural towns are joining drumMUSTER to help improve the quality of life and environment in their local communities. Every year, volunteers hold drumMUSTER collections for farmers looking to get rid of their empty and clean agvet chemical containers. drumMUSTER rewards groups by paying them 25 cents for each drum they inspect. Containers need to be inspected by trained inspectors to see if they are clean and dry before being processed and recycled. Dookie Lions Club member Bruce Larcombe said the program is a source of funding for their projects in town. “There’s a need for drumMUSTER in the area because there’s a lot of cropping, Mr Larcombe said. “Plus, it’s another avenue for fundraising. In northern Victoria, six difference community groups raised a total of $6797 after collecting more than 27,000 drums in less than a year.

Taking the hard work out RI FKRSSLQJ XS Âż UH ZRRG BORN, bred and living in one of the coldest places in Australia, David Burder knows a thing or two about efficient home heating. Nineteen years ago when he was splitting another 10 tonnes of firewood with his hand held axe, the idea of building a machine to do the job seemed well worth the effort. With a background in general engineering, David set about designing a hydraulic wood splitter that was efficient and

easy to use, and took the back breaking work out of the job. At this stage most of the available machines on the market utilised a horizontal system where the split timber fell onto the ground requiring a lot of double handling. By changing the configuration to a vertical system, the operator worked at a comfortable bench height and could concentrate on the job at hand. Add to this a back saving log lifter, hydraulic power pack,

and a lever-styled splitting blade and you’ve got the first ever prototype Superaxe. Fast forward to 2013 and David’s business ‘Whitlands Engineering’ employs 18 people – a handful of which have been working with the business since the early days. Over the years, Whitlands Engineering has evolved into a specialist designer and manufacturer of firewood processing equipment to suit most requirements - yet the original

ethos still remains – Whitlands Engineering builds machines that are efficient, ergonomical, safe and overall, tough. The range now includes the Superaxe and Aussie Chopper wood splitters. Whitlands Engineering will be conducting demonstrations at their site during Elmore Field Days. For more information contact David Burder at Whitlands Engineering on 1800 702 701 or visit www.superaxe.com.au.

WINTER WARMTH: The Aussie Chopper wood splitter will be on display with demonstrations of its ability to take place at Elmore Field Days 2013.

Maintaining healthy animals with Propharma

t/05d06381/36-13

PROPHARMA are all about helping their clients maintain healthy animals, which is why they have come up with their latest vitamin and mineral supplement for a range of animals. The weather shield loose lick supplements provide ad-lib minerals and vitamins to cattle, sheep, horses, alpacas and goats. According to Propharma nutritionist and technical sales manager, Geoff Irish, the supplement primarily contains essential salt and other vital minerals and vitamins, replacing the missing nutrients that are crucial to maintaining a healthy animal. “The animal will only take as much as they need according to its individual needs, providing an efďŹ cient and costeffective form of supplementation,â€? Dr Irish said. “Weather Shield Loose Lick Supplements are weatherproof and have been designed to be fed out in self draining troughs, making it ideal for open grazing situations. “They can also be used all year round.â€? Weather Shield Loose Lick Supplements contain macro minerals, calcium phosphorus, magnesium, salt and minerals, micro minerals, cobalt, copper, iodine, manganese, selenium and zinc, and vitamins including A, D and E. Experience ensures longevity for Quik Corp

THE first commercialised version of a remote controlled, retractable hose reel for weed spraying was released in 1988 and a lot has changed since then. Australian owned and operated Quik Corp released this weedspraying system under the iconic

Quik Spray brand and today the company manufactures Quik Spray premium spraying systems that are now imitated from competitors. According to Quik Corp the differences and facts related to its products make the company’s weed-spraying system stand out

RENOWNED agricultural, road and industrial trailer company, Dean Trailers Australia Pty Ltd has just released two new designs to its already extensive range, with both on display at this year’s Elmore Field Days. The three-way tipper configuration is available on the number 27, 2.1 tonne capacity and the number 7HD 2.5 tonne capacity utility trailers with drop down sides and tailgate. Dean Trailers’ managing director, Chris Guy, said these trailers are popular with builders and garden maintenance contractors. “The advantage of the three-way tipping makes these trailers even more flexible,” Mr Guy said. “Utilising an electro-hydraulic powered ram on a gimbal with four pivot points, the trailer tray can tip backwards and to both sides.” The easy tipper is based on a 7 x 6 inch single axle box trailer with elec-

tric brakes, drop sides and side swing tailgate. “On the maintenance free AL-KO Independent Rubber Suspension, ride and tracking will be excellent,” Mr Guy said. “There are no shackle pins, bush or leaf springs to maintain. “The tipping mechanism is mechanical, just unlock the tray and push it back on the rollers and your load is dumped,” he said. With no need to move the load to achieve the tip, ease of operation and no mechanical parts to fail, Mr Guy sees this trailer as being ideal for people with large gardens and hobby farms. Dean Trailers has also entered into the tag trailer market, with a range of trailers based on single/dual wheel and single/tandem axle combinations nine tonne through to 22 tonne.
