‘‘Nagambie will come to life from 10am with both land and water activities including the annual Club to Pub Swim, the Costa Canoe Challenge, and Poetry With The Top,” said Claire.

The Nagambie On Water Festival is back for 2021 The hugely popular NOW Festival has traditionally been held on the First weekend of March and 2021 will be no different. Celebrating it’s 14th year, the lakeside town is set for families to come and experience all the fun and excitement of the festival with a comprehensive COVID-safe plan in place to ensure everything is clean and safe for everyone. The NOW organising committee like all other organisations has experienced the roller coaster ride of the constantly changing environment of covid19 restrictions but with perseverance and commitment the event will go ahead. “We were concerned about the ability to hold the event on the traditional March weekend but we pushed ahead and NOW it’s upon us,” laughed Claire Sampson.

The festival will be held at Jacobson’s Outlook, on High Street, in the bowl of Lake Nagambie and in the Go Dine marquees of the median strip precinct of High Street. The Nagambie Community Market will also be in full swing along High Street. The GO ADVENTURE Stay & Play pass will see participants enjoying water based activities including, pedal boats, canoes, paddle boards and more. The Mechanical Bull is back, Water Zorbs, jumping castle, giant slide and some carnival games. “To enjoy all these activities, a Morning Pass is just $15 and a Full Day Pass is available $30,” said Claire. The NOW CLUB TO PUB open water swim starts at 12midday with both the 1.1km and 600metres. “Registration for the 1.1km swim is $40 and $20 for the 600km swim,” said Claire.

The NOW tteam acknowledged Th k l d d the th enormous efforts of the local businesses during 2020 and look forward to the rest of 2021 with a renewed sense of thanks for what we have and a view to celebrate what our wonderful lakeside town means to us and to its many visitors. “At NOW 2021, we celebrate the commitment to our community that local businesses provide – not just to our event but to the whole community, both residents and visitors. It has been with the tenacity, positive attitude, ability to think “outside the box” and their determination to keep going, that our wonderful businesses have supported this community through what many would consider their worst year ever,” said Claire. “We thank our local business for their generosity towards our community, and GoNagambie for their advertising sponsorship for the Lion NOW Festival,” said Claire. GO NAGAMBIE TO GO NAGAMBIE FACEBOOK PHOTO COMPETITION BENEFIT FROM SHIRE’S BUSINESS RECOVERY FUNDING Two principal business groups in the Strathbogie Shire will receive COVID 19 recovery funding to assist local businesses. Go Nagambie and the Euroa Chamber of Commerce will receive $30,000 each from the economic development funding of the council. This funding will assist businesses that have struggled as a result of the pandemic and to provide professional services to support their recovery. It will also be used to provide free membership for 12 months to all registered businesses in the shire and surrounding localities. Secretary of Go Nagambie, John Beresford spoke to the Gazette last week about some of the plans his group were considering to do with the funding from the shire. Mr Beresford said “We intend to relieve existing members from their annual subscription fees for this calendar year as well as encouraging new members to join by wavering fees for their first year. By providing free subscription, all members will be entitled to the many benefits provided by our organisation. This will be a small contribution to businesses weathering the storm post COVID. Go Nagambie will leverage this funding opportunity to include Avenel, Graytown, Mitchelton, Tahbilk , and Wahring as well as Nagambie businesses. With the assistance of this funding, our aim is to expand our database across this catchment area and upgrade our website so all members have a presence. We will continue publication of the Nagambie Community Voice as an information and advertising resource and grow our social media platforms. One major initiative is to conduct Community Business Recovery Forums with keynote speakers which may include accountants, local MP’s and successful business operators drawn from within our local business network. We are looking to draw on their own personal experiences and provide mentoring advice for those businesses that may need access to assistance.` Strathbogie Shire Mayor, Cr Chris Raeburn said “there are 1400 businesses in the Strathbogie Shire with the vast majority being small ones with less than 10 employees. Businesses of this size often do not have the resources or support networks to assist them in recovering from a crisis of this scale.” He continued “This will allow these businesses to seek support and assistance from within their own business community and to encourage business owners to network within their own areas. The funding also has the capacity for local businesses to plan events and attract customers to the region. By Diane Grant

The soil has been turned and a slab laid for the new Exercise Hub in Jubilee Park. This $50,000 project was the result of an approach made to the Strathbogie Shire by Avenel Active to fulfill a need in the community for open air fitness facilities. This was part of the agreed 2018 Community Pan and comprises eight pieces of equipment in major fitness categories for all abilities. The equipment will be installed within the next few days and once the rubberized undersurface is laid it will be ready for use. The site in the park was chosen in conjunction with the Jubilee Park Committee for its accessibility, right next to the tennis courts in Jubilee Crescent. Do come and see it and use it when open! Avenel Active meetings take place on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Memorial Hall. All are welcome to come and join in on the lively and relevant discussions about our town and community The next meeting is Wednesday 10th March at 7.30PM.

BAKING WITH BARB

Roast Vegetable Homemade Quiche Well something a bit more wholesome this issue, with a nourishing healthy Quiche. Light and easy to prepare, fill up your tummies, with it warm or cold. DIGGING WITH DAVE

Is bigger better? I am lucky enough to live on an acre block, within the Nagambie township. I was told by a couple of other ‘townies’ on smaller patches of dirt, that I’d be forever in the yard, ‘doing stuff ’! They were right of course, always something to clean up, pick up, saw up, cut up etc. Luckily, I quite enjoy it, as does the missus-remember she likes being called that, like being called ‘boss’, which of course she is :-). Anyhoo, back to digging and the acre block. I was speaking to my neighbour Kevin across the road, and we were discussing the pros and cons of such a large allotment. Now Kevin and his lovely wife bought the block back in 1985, wait for it.....for the Princely sum of $15,000 dollars, try that today and no change out of $250,000. Crazy stuff and if you want a house and shed, $650K plus! Anyway I did eventually get into the back yard and it is very nice to have that feeling of space and privacy. Lovely established trees, colourful plants and a variety of bird-life, all sharing the space. Apparently the yard was a bit bare 30odd years ago, so the couple planted a ‘tiny’ Oak tree and a ‘tiny’ lemon-scented gum, not tiny any more! The oak would be 40 feet tall and the gum even higher. Kevin reckons they can pin-point their place from most spots in town by the top of the gum. He adds, if it ever comes down, he hopes it falls his way, as the back neighbour doesn’t need a new shed yet.

The whole block is pretty ship-shape, with things logically set out, presenting a very neat package. I’m going to get a few lessons myself, as our place looks like the recycling depot by comparison. At the back of the house is a sole sunflower, which happens to be near the bird water. Apparently the water gets plenty of activity throughout the day and is dutifully refilled. Now when one of the birds was taking its fill it must have multi-skilled and dropped out a seed? That’s the Sunflower story and they’re sticking with it. Now during the backyard tour I was shown many a reduced garden bed. When they moved in big garden beds were the flavour, as more garden - less mowing! What wasn’t factored in was the ‘labour of love’ required to keep the beds in some sort of order. So the gradual reduction in garden beds in favour of lawn has taken place. I did come across a small garden area with a headstone and was told that it was the pet cemetery. If the pic makes it, we have Dermit the Canary under the paver (named after Dermot Brereton as he was yellow with brown highlights, and Kevin is a Hawks fan). Next is Elvis the cat, who strayed in and stayed for 16 years, must be a good hotel. Max the cocker spaniel gets the headstone. It was a nice area to remember faithful pets. Kevin likes to repurpose where possible and has saved a lot of interesting items from the tip. Now I know what your

thinking, he collects junk!, but no, there is some tasteful displays around the yard, I don’t know how he keeps them looking so good, the spiders have a party in my stuff. A garden bed under repair has old clothing down as the weed-mat, as it wasn’t suitable for the Op Shop. Better than putting plastic in the ground and might start a rage, so ahead of his time. There is also a neat area which Kevin calls his ‘just in case I need it area’. Bricks, pavers, wire, pots, wood, screen doors, star pickets, the list goes on. Now rather than strewn over the block, it has been centralised for neatness and easy access, looks like it works. I cannot wind up without showing you this lovely garden paver, sums it up I think and reminds you of what a wonderful place the garden can be. “Kind hearts are the garden, Kind thoughts are the roots, Kind words are the blossoms, Kind deeds are the fruits” Well, I got a cuppa in the end, which rounded out a nice afternoon. Thanks Kevin and get over here to give me some advice about an orderly acre block. Cheers, Dave

A BUSY BEGINNING AT ST. JOSEPH’S

It was a busy and fun week of competitive swimming last week! Twenty-four students competed at the Euroa District swimming carnival on Monday and a school record eighteen swimmers competing at The Ranges Division swimming at Seymour on Friday. These students had earned their place in the school team through their great performances at our House swimming carnival.

We have had a very busy start to 2021. The commissioning of our grade 6 leaders at our Opening School Mass. Enjoying the delicious produce from our garden like apples and corn! St. Joseph’s Swimming Carnival congratulations blue team! Remote learning again - we are glad to be back at school. We had 5 students compete in the District Swimming Carnival in Euroa: Ayla, Xavier, Bryce, Jordan and Eoin. Congratulations to Xavier who also competed in the Division Swimming Carnival in Seymour. Ash Wednesday Mass to celebrate the start of Lent and the countdown to Easter.

Just making Division swimming is a great achievement, so we are especially proud of sisters Jazarah & Leyla, who along with Amelia have made it through to the Hume region primary school swimming championships in Shepparton. Well done girls!
