FORTY-TWO SQUARES, 500 HOURS OF SEWING LATER THE NAGAMBIE COMMUNITY QUILT IS COMPLETE Forty-two squares and close to 500 hours of sewing later, the Nagambie Community Quilt has finally been completed! On display at the Community House in their new facility on 363 High Street, this piece of art now proudly illustrates how one small town banded together during a global pandemic and brought out the best in one another. It was at the start of statewide lockdown and new regulations that the idea of a Community Quilt was born. The NLCH wanted to help create both a tribute to how people in Nagambie supported

one another, but also a memento of a time when so much of our lives drastically changed. A hundred years from now when the Covid-19 pandemic might very well just be a paragraph in a history book, this quilt will bear testimony of how it affected our town and the people in it. In April of 2020, a broad invitation was sent out to all Nagambie groups and individuals to create and contribute with a square. The proposed theme of the quilt was ‘something you love about our town’, and the response was overwhelming. The CFA, both schools, Kinder, the Football and Netball Club, the library, GoNagambie and the Rowing Club were just some of the people who contributed with a square. The backing of the quilt was later on generously donated by Val Monigatti, at a point when she knew she wouldn’t be

able to see the finished result. For all of Val’s friends and the Community House where she was a member, this adds great sentimental value to the quilt. After all pieces had been collected, Anne Turville and Wendy Cook spent over 200 hours each putting all the squares together and were “each other’s bubble” at a time when you were only allowed to have one visitor in your home. During a short window when restrictions eased, they also had help from Val Felstead and when their work was completed the whole quilt was transported up to Shepparton to be professionally quilted. “Although the proposed theme was something you love about our town, so many people came up with wonderful ideas and interpretations themselves”, coordinator Anna Close said. “Lois

made a square with a cat, to represent all the furry friends who have provided us with companionship during a time when family and friends couldn’t visit. Moya did the rainbow as a reminder of how we painted rainbows and displayed them at the front of our houses or in our windows. Then there’s the square with Australian natives, the “going loopy” one and not to forget the wonderful stick figures from Kinder. The thought of young men and women, in the near future, being able to walk into the Community House and point out which one they drew just feels so heartwarming,” Anna concluded. If you are interested in coming and having a look for yourself, you are welcome to the Community House, now located at 363 High Street in Nagambie, between 10.00am and 3.00pm.

BAKING WITH BARB

Choc Chip Biscuits Welcome this Issue to “Baking With Barb”. The inspiration for this came from a friend of mine’s wife, surprisingly her name is Barb! No dinner party is complete without a dish from Barb and if it is a dessert, we are all sure to eat our veggies, so we don’t miss out. Of course we all look forward to the invite to their house, for the full ensemble; entree, dinner, dessert....yum.

Baking Instructions Preheat oven to 180degrees.

Ingredients 250g butter, softened 350g soft brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs, lightly beaten 310g plain flour 60g cocoa powder 2 teaspoons baking powder 400 g choc bits

Beat together the butter and sugar until light and creamy. Add the vanilla and eggs and stir together well. Sift in the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder. Mix until just combined. Fold in choc bits Place spoonful of the mixture onto a lined tray, leaving room for spreading. Cook for 15 - 20 minutes. Cool on trays. Enjoy!

POLICE UPDATE JET SKI OPERATORS FINED

As a result of a number of concerns raised regarding behaviour of watercraft on Lake Nagambie, the Victoria Police Water Police Branch conducted water patrols on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th of November. Numerous infringement notices were issued over the two days, the larger majority of which were issued to Jet Ski Operators. In all, 19 fines were issued for various offences, 11 of those fines were issued to Jet Ski Operators for the offence of speeding alone.

nagambiefarmersmarket@gmail.com Phone: 0429 023 618

Water Police members did note on Saturday, that the behaviour of watercraft operators did improve as the day went on, no doubt once it became common knowledge that irresponsible and dangerous behaviour would not be tolerated. “It is unfortunate that any infringement notices had to be issued at all. Personal Watercraft like Jet Skis are designed for fun, but any behaviour that puts others at risk will not be tolerated, so it’s good that this message has now been sent.” Whilst at Nagambie, the Water Police also assisted in the search for a missing canoeist on the lake. Family members and police initially feared the worst, but all was well in the end when the lost and disorientated paddler found her way to a local farmhouse and called for help. Responsible Watercraft Operators can look forward to the Water Police returning to the lake at numerous times this summer.

ANNA ROWLAND AWARDED THE FRED HOLLOWS HUMANITY AWARD Professor Fred Hollows was an internationally acclaimed Australian eye surgeon who championed the right of all people to high-quality and affordable eye care and good health. In his time as a humanitarian and eye surgeon on behalf of the World Health Organisation, Fred helped restore eyesight to thousands of people in Australia and overseas. The Fred Hollows Humanity Award celebrates students who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives, just as Fred did. Since its inception in 2012, the Award has recognised more than 1,580 students. The Award recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in their community. Year 6 Nagambie Primary School student Anna Rowland was awarded the Fred Hollows Humanity Award on November 20 for being recognised for her compassion, integrity and kindness. “I attended the online ceremony with my three best friends, Eliza, Matilda and Ayesha and I wasn’t expecting it at all, so we were all surprised and very pleased,” said Anna. Anna represents Nagambie Primary School

as a vice captain and is known for extending kindness and compassion to her family and the community. Anna was nominated for the award by her grandfather Raymond Lloyd. An example of Anna’s kindness was displayed during Covid19 restrictions at Easter. Anna arranged for all the households in her street to receive an Easter surprise during a time when residents were unable to visit family and friends. “My sister Lilly and I made up special Easter chocolate bags and cards for everyone in the street and delivered them in a COVID safe way,” said Anna. The Fred Hollows Foundation's founding director Gabi Hollows congratulated 254 students from across the nation for their kindness, compassion and integrity during 2020. “This year, more than ever, it's important to recognise these values,” Mrs Hollows said. “... amidst everything going on in the world, the foundation was able to celebrate these fine young leaders and highlight the differences they are making in their communities. “Fred would have been incredibly proud of the contribution these students are making to society, no matter how big or small their actions.” Another person that was extremely proud was Anna’s Grandfather. We asked Anna how her Grandfather reacted when he heard the news.

“Granddad never says much but he was super excited!”

so he will be extra spoiled by me, that’s for sure!!” finished Anna.

“I was very thankful and gave him a big hug. It is his 70th birthday on Christmas day this year

Congratulations Anna!

Nagambie PRIMARY SCHOOL

NAGAMBIE PRIMARY SCHOOL

NAGAMBIE PS FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE One of the lessons of this year has been remembering to appreciate the value and joy of the regular, everyday things in life. There have been many highlights in returning to ‘normal’, on-site learning this term, and one of them has been the resumption of tennis. All students, P-6 have enjoyed learning and playing tennis in their PE classes. Our

KidsMatter ‘Hands On’ students have also enjoyed playing on Wednesday afternoons and our long standing Monday lunchtime ‘HotShots’ tennis coaching group was also able to resume. With the retirement of our senior coach Norm Cahill, this group has been coached by senior students Campbell Baker and Bridie Love. We appreciate the fabulous, longstanding support of Tennis Victoria and the federally funded Sporting Schools program, which has assisted with purchasing some great equipment.

NAGAMBIE PRE-SCHOOL

ST JOSEPH'S PRIMARY SCHOOL ST. JOSEPH’S END OF YEAR EXCURSION On Wednesday the 2nd of December, we had our end of year excursion to the Bendigo Discovery Centre and Long Gully Splash Park. At the Bendigo Discovery Centre, the grade F/1/2 students went to a session on mini beasts. They got to look at what creatures are classified as mini beasts and how they have an exoskeleton. The grade 3-6 students did some engineering and worked with a team to design

and create a marble run on a pegboard. It had to go for 7 seconds. We then got to explore the centre and have a look around at all the science-based activities. There was optical illusions, force and motion, sound, biology and more! Each group then spent some time in a planetarium where they explored the stars, sun, moon and planets. The big finale was the vertical slide, which was a 15 metre drop. Only some students were brave enough to have a go! On the way home, we stopped at the Long Gully Splash Park to play in the water or have a game on the oval or just sit in the shade and relax. It was an educational and fun-filled day!

AVENEL PRIMARY SCHOOL AVENEL PS FORTNIGHTLY UPDATE The 3/4s went off to camp where they had 3 days of outdoor activities at Alexandra Adventure Resort. They had a great time enjoying many fun activities including canoeing, low ropes, initiative games and raft building.

There have been some easing of restrictions, and we are pleased that parents and other visitors are now permitted back on school site. There are still limitations, which will mean that our Christmas Concert cannot go ahead as normal, so it will be a virtual event. Each class will perform an item and awards will be presented, but the event will be streamed online for you to enjoy in your own homes.

LOCAL BUSINESS CHAMBERS RECEIVE VITAL FUNDING Mitchell Business Network Incorporated, Euroa Chamber of Business and Commerce Inc, Nagambie Lakes Tourism & Commerce Inc, Seymour Business & Tourism Inc members will benefit from funding awarded through the Andrews Labor Government’s Grants for Business Chambers and Trader Groups program. Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the funding will help these business chamber and trader groups to provide critical advice, connections and resources to businesses in the Mitchell and Strathbogie Shire areas and support their members’ transition to COVID Normal.

The program has provided $4.15 million in support through grants of $10,000, $20,000 or $50,000 to business chambers and trader groups across Victoria to support their local business community’s recovery and restart. Mitchell Business Network Incorporated, Nagambie Lakes Tourism & Commerce Inc, Seymour Business & Tourism Inc and Euroa Chamber of Business and Commerce Inc have all been successful with $20,000. “We appreciate the leading role Victorian business chambers and trader groups play in helping local businesses rebound and recover – that’s why it’s important to back that leadership with funding for local solutions to this global pandemic,” said Minister for Small Business Jaala Pulford.

Grant recipients will use the funding for business activation initiatives like facilitating members’ adaptation to COVID Normal, ‘buy local’ campaigns and improving access to programs and services focused on resilience and recovery. These organisations are four of the 182 organisations that have so far received grant funding through the initiative. The Grants for Business Chambers and Trader Groups program is part of more than $7 billion in direct economic support provided by the Labor Government to Victorian businesses and workers to help them weather the storm of the pandemic. Some $2.6 billion in funding has supported more than 130,000 small and medium

businesses to date through the Business Support Fund while $87.5 million has been provided to support hospitality businesses prepare for COVID Normal. “We’re committed to assisting businesses throughout Northern Victoria recover from the coronavirus pandemic and our local Business chambers and trader groups will be a key part of this recovery,” said Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes. DIGGING WITH DAVE - YOUR ‘BEAUTIFUL’ COMMUNITY GARDEN Well Gidday and welcome to this fortnight’s issue. I’ve taken a different tact this time and have focussed on our ‘big garden’, that is Nagambie CBD. I’m an “early to bed, early to rise” type and am usually out and about around 0700 hours. The one constant I notice apart, from the last of the workers heading south, is the Town’s gardener come landscaper. He’s always at it, whether it is on his hands and knees weeding, trimming the edges or mowing the lawns. Between 6am and 3pm, Walter is constantly on the go, not shovel-leaning for him!

I did interrupt him the other day to get a few facts about the gardens and ask him a little bit about himself. Now Walter is a native of NZ, which the accent confirms, and worked in construction, and rail, before seeking a ‘tree change’ about 4 years ago. Fishing and a quieter life in picturesque surrounds were the draw card, which is a familiar theme. He’s a ‘smoker’.....of fish that is, and reckons anything he catches goes whole in the Weber and is smoked, beautiful. He mainly catches yellow-belly and has caught cod. He quickly adds, ‘a’ cod, meaning one. I ask him about his favourite spot amongst Nagambie’s community gardens and he tells me he doesn’t have one, “as long as the town looks good”. It sure does in my book, it’s neat, clean, tidy, shady and green. Speaking to Walter I get a

sense of him taking great pride in his work and genuinely wanting the town to look good for the community, and visitors. Well, no more ‘dilly-dallying’ with me, he fires up the mower and is off again. Thanks Walter for the short chat and keeping our town in tiptop shape. Looking around it is a pretty good place and the well manicured gardens really compliment the whole picture. Hope the Mayor reads this and gives Walter some deserved, positive feedback.

103 YEARS OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE! That is what service Lions Club can celebrate worldwide. Here in Nagambie Lions has long been a proud and effective organization able to contribute to our local community. But now, we are under threat of closure, due to the dwindling numbers of the long standing, ever faithful members who are no longer able to continue their service to the community. CAN YOU HELP? Lions Club of Nagambie has been working tirelessly improving lives of local residents for over 30 years. Do you even know what contributions our Club has made to the community? You know the caravan, the sales of sausages at IGA, the catering at the Carol’s, NOW Festival, Cranksters and all the other events they volunteer to help with and serve in other ways. We sponsor two children at our local school, we provide student awards to all schools,

thousands of dollars have been given to so many causes and worthy recipients that may go unnoticed by most of the residents in our wonderful town.

“For the mere satisfaction that I get in my heart and for the service we’re providing the less fortunate, I’m really proud to be a Lion”. David Mutayisa, Uganda.

As one of Australia’s largest community service organizations, clubs across Australia are involved in a wide range of important initiatives. Our global service has over 1.4 million members and these causes present significant challenges to humanity, and we believe it’s our turn to meet them. With many areas of need, the worldwide Lions organization work to help with:

Lions has the potential to do so much good for so many people, and we are devastated to face the prospect of the Nagambie club folding. If we could encourage more members, young people with great ideas, ways that we can contribute further to the community. So many people of different backgrounds would give us the injection of enthusiasm and productivity to further the Aims of Lions Club International as well as for our town.

Diabetes, Vision, Hunger, Environment, Prostate Cancer, Hearing, Disaster Relief & Recovery, Childhood Cancer, Alzheimers and don’t forget the ever famous Christmas Cake! Would you like the chance to be part of this worldwide organization and help us give more to the world? There is so many parts of Lions that cater for all interests, Online Club, Youth Club, Club for travelers, Club for families. We know you will find something that will be of interest to everyone.

So many statistics can be relayed to you on the millions of dollars raised and shared Australia and worldwide. So many changes to lives and communities in so many ways. Please consider joining us to reinvigorate our service organization. Lions also cater to the youth with their Leo Club section. Do you have a teenager that would benefit from learning new skills, social interaction, engage in teamwork, leadership and overcome challenges? Lions is giving our leaders of tomorrow the experiences, support and opportunities they need to succeed.

Please help us to save our group, I think the following quote embodies what I feel proud about to be a Lion. “Becoming a Lion gives you a wonderful opportunity to help those in the local and international community that are less fortunate than yourselves. You make new friends, broaden your skills and expand your experiences with like-minded people of all ages. Being part of the world’s largest service organization opens many opportunities to you as a member by participating and being involved.” Tony Benbow OAM, past International Director of Lions, Australia. FRIENDS OF NAGAMBIE POOL

NAGAMBIE SENIOR CITIZENS

We held a very successful meeting on Wednesday, to regroup after such a long break away due to Covid, and also the winter season when the pool is closed. I want to thank those who came along and we have renewed enthusiasm to see our pool utilized and promoted far more than it is currently.

At the time of writing this article to meet the paper deadline, we are still unsure of the changes to be made on Sunday 6 th . We have organized the Christmas Party for all members, to be split over two days to cater for the regulations, Wednesday 9 th and Thursday 10 th . You should have been notified, and thanks so much to John and Jackie for all the ringing around to invite and confirm numbers.

The new contractors who are looking after the pool are so invested in ensuring the pool season is a great opportunity to offer new experiences and be an exciting time for Nagambie Pool. We are looking forward to a great interaction with Rod and the other staff, who has already inspired us to action. I have really appreciated his input and commitment to the pool and we know that this will be a long hot summer with plenty of time to go to the pool. ee the website and the Facebook page to get the times that the pool is open. Also the lap swimmers are catered for in the morning 7 to 9 three days a week, so no excuse, get that early morning exercise before work. https://www.facebook.com/ Nagambie-SwimmingPool-111394080782230

This was a very onerous task, and we will be looking at ways to ensure members receive and are encouraged to READ the newsletters and emails when received. This would have saved a lot of time, but moving forward, we are hoping to get a better system to confirm numbers and bookings in the future. You may be heading to the lunch on the day this paper is available, so we hope you come along on your allocated day, don’t forget to bring some loose change as we will have lots of raffles, door prize, secret prize, members draw and many other fun ideas to help you enjoy the day. We are very appreciative to our members for their continued support, especially during this unprecedented time There are many plans in place for next year, the trips to include the favorites, like the Tramboat, Goulburn Explorer, trips to the trots, races and many more. Please ensure you let us know what
