Visit sensational Swanpool this winter

SWANPOOL is a small community between Benalla and Mansfield with a heart of gold. The town boasts a general store, CFA, two churches, a bowling club and a footy ground. You might drive right on through, unless you see the cinema. The famous Swanpool Community Cinema is a fabulous use of the memorial hall and boasts a comfortable interior and supper room, as well as a great offering of current movies each weekend. Like many things in regional towns, the cinema is manned by volunteers and is the social hub of the district. However, each year during winter, the volunteers take a break from the cinema which is converted into a professional exhibition space in readiness for SCRAP (Swanpool Creative Recycled Art Prize). SCRAP is being held this year from July 31 to August 15. This is a big event and more than 70 local volunteers are involved in everything from curating, ticketing, catering and so much more. At the end of the community event, profits are paid out per volunteer hour to one of the

nominated 14 local community groups. In 2019, more than $40,000 was given back to these groups. This is the major attraction of the wider Swanpool Arts Festival and will also showcase exhibitions from the Broken River Painters Group and Benalla Camera Club as part of the Arts Festival. Come along and enjoy the creative wizardry of the artists who are creating “WOW from Waste” using at least 75% recycled materials. While you’re visiting, drop into the dining room at the Memorial Hall and sample some of the excellent food on offer ranging from morning and afternoon teas to a selection of light and full lunches in a warm, comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Pick up a copy of the Tourist Map which displays local wineries and points of interest or stay at one of the lovely B&Bs. You can download the map from the website: www. swanpoolanddistrict.com.au where you can also see the details about this year’s SCRAP exhibition. Swanpool looks forward to welcoming you to the district.

Explore wine country - part 1

WELCOME: The Beechworth and King Valley areas are well known for their wineries. THE historic town of Beechworth is well known for its significance with the Kelly Gang but what many people do not realise is that Beechworth also has a growing wine region. The region has approximately 30 wineries in an area which covers Stanley, Beechworth, Everton and almost 20 of those offer cellar door tastings and/or sales. Cool climate wine varieties including Shiraz, Chardonnay, Syrah and Vermentino call Beechworth

home and almost every winery boasts beautiful outlooks and/or sloping hills. You may have come for the history or natural beauty of the Beechworth area, but you’ll want to stay for the wine exploration and tasting. The Oxley/Milawa region is well known when it comes to fine, award winning wines. Although Milawa and Oxley wineries often come under the King

Valley banner (which extends to Cheshunt), you could easily spend a day or two visiting just those in these two small towns. A long lunch followed by some tastings followed by an afternoon tea picnic with local produce you picked up, followed perhaps by some more tastings before heading off to enjoy dinner somewhere. If you want to feel healthy and adventurous before you settle in for a long afternoon, why not grab a

Just make sure you pack yourself a bag so you can take home your favourite tipple or produce. The King Valley area is host to 12 wineries and Weekend Fit For a King will be held the Queen’s Birthday long weekend this June with Prosecco, Pinot Grigio, Rosato, Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo available.

A name you know and trust IT was way back in 1885 when John Francis Brown first planted 10 acres of Riesling, Muscat and Shiraz grape vines in Milawa. In 1889, the first vintage of wine was produced and four generations and 132 years later, Brown Brothers have become a key member of Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW). With an established reputation as ‘a winery that challenges the status quo’, this has never been more evident than when fourth generation Katherine Brown joined the winemaking team in 2015 and became the first female winemaker in the family. Or when the prestigious title of Winemaker of the Year 2020 was awarded to Senior Winemaker, Cate Looney, at the Australian Women in Wine Awards last year. Both achievements were firsts for the Brown Family Wine Group and the women are immensely proud and humble about their place in the history of the business. The vineyards continue to grow, as do the options available to visitors to the historic property. At the cellar door you can taste a range of white, red, sweet and dry wines, including

Explore wine country - part 2 RUTHERGLEN is well known across the state for their wines. With 19 wineries in the region, the only real way to get to visit them all during your stay is to plan. There are Rutherglen wine region touring maps available which can help immensely and the double sided ‘bible’ even gives you accommodation options whether you like a traditional B & B, selfcontained option, or one of the local caravan parks, you’re sure to find something to suit. The wines themselves are not to be missed with the Rutherglen region known mostly for its Muscat and Durif varieties. The Mansfield wine district is not limited to the town itself, but includes Lima South, Delatite, Bonnie Doon, Lake Eildon, Barjarg, Goughs Bay and Lake Nillahcootie.

These wineries specialise in cool climate wines such as Riesling, white aromatics, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon and many have won awards for their exceptional flavours and blends. Wineries in the Mansfield region are younger than most others, with vineyards first planted in the 1980s almost 100 years later than vineyards in Rutherglen or the King Valley. Another hidden gem is in Yackandandah where the oldest strawberry winery in Australia lives. With dry, semi-sweet and sweet varieties, strawberry wine can be served at room temperature or chilled and pairs well with chocolate. Set amongst acres of lush strawberry fields, the winery is definitely something to be experienced, so make sure you drop in.

COME AND SAY HELLO: Well known and lesser known wineries abound in many towns of Victoria.

With a brand new limited edition gin released in late May, you’ll want to get to the Estate to try it out and see if you can find the real gold flakes inside. This new gin will pay tribute to the Beechworth area that Glenbosch calls home and its gold rush history, as well as the golden granite soils. Described as an earthy gin and perfect for martinis, it will only be released once a year due to the fact it is made with grapes grown on golden granite on the farm. Visit the Glenbosch cellar door

Once you’ve chosen your favourite beverage, make your way to Glenbosch’s restaurant, which serves up delicious lunches with the best local produce. Historic Jindera Pioneer Museum

STEP BACK IN TIME: Joan Bowers guards the entrance to the famous Wagners Store, which was established in 1874. PHOTO: Jindera Pioneer Museum THE history of Jindera Pioneer Museum is clear to see from the outside, a beautiful facade that perfectly encapsulates the German heritage it shares with much of the Jindera region. But the major attraction is what is housed inside, as the property seeks to recreate the material culture of its 1860s roots, refurbished purely through the use of authentic local relics. The museum has risen to become one of the best known in New South Wales, the converted Wagner’s Store simply a front for the two acres

of grounds that house an extensive collection of farm implements, a forge, an historic post office, a beautiful gallery and a range of other authentic outhouses and structures. The initiative has been supported by volunteers since the Jindera Pioneer Museum and Historical Society purchased the property in 1967, raising funds through general admission and their tea room, coupled with the occasional government grant. They also hold up to nine special events each

year, ranging from regal high teas and heritage dinners to cinema under the stars and campfire nights, with volunteers constantly looking to diversify their historic attraction. The museum is open every day from 10am to 3pm throughout winter, with their famed tea room opening its doors every Sunday for guests to enjoy Devonshire tea and a variety of sweets. Adults and children can visit for as little as $7 and $4 respectively, with considerable discounts available for large group bookings.

HAUNTING: As foreboding as it is in the daytime, the former Mayday Hills asylum becomes something even more eerie by night.

The ghostly lion of Beechworth HIDDEN away from prying eyes atop a lonely hillside on the outskirts of Beechworth’s historic town centre, Mayday Hills Asylum sits overlooking the town, waiting. Now you can wander through its many twisted hallways and small, stifling rooms. Asylum Ghost Tours offers ghost tours, history tours and paranormal investigations at the historic asylum within eleven hectares of heritage gardens. Let the experienced guides tell you all the secrets of the place, relax

in a comfortable lounge chair to watch a horror double-feature, or come along to one of the sleepover events and stay the night. If you’ve previously visited, come back to explore some recentlyopened areas you may never have seen. Explore beyond doors that have been locked for decades, and see what few have experienced before. While the sun shines, join the weekend daytime history tours to hear about the 128 year history of the buildings of the former asylum.

You’ll hear stories of the opening of the facility, the many patients we still know about, and the final years of the ‘Lion of Beechworth’, as the asylum was known. After darkness falls, the tours of the dark, haunted buildings of the facility begin. Your host will guide you through the many abandoned hallways, cells, common rooms, surgeries, and isolation areas of the old asylum. The ghost tour encompasses facility history, memories, local tales, urban myths, and stories of

the supernatural. For the more adventurous, paranormal investigations take place when all is quiet and the dead open their eyes. Groups experience two or three hour investigations in an attempt to find out who or what still haunts the foreboding asylum. From experienced ghost-hunters to those who merely wonder at the whispered tales of hauntings, the promise of an entertaining exploration of the most haunted areas of all tempts many.

THE upcoming Winter Exhibition at the Bright Art Gallery promises to be of the usual high quality. The main exhibition is a diverse display by the Alpine Artists, who are the artist members of the Bright Art Gallery. With the ever-increasing numbers of Alpine Artists at the gallery, the opportunity to provide diverse and interesting exhibitions each year grows. The Winter Exhibition will include paintings, photographs and three-dimensional works, all with a winter theme. Including a number of different mediums, the artworks will be a collection of traditional and contemporary pieces. In addition to the above, there will be selected works on display from the gallery’s large permanent collection, with the ‘North East’ as a unifying theme. Some of these works date

back many years and provide a fascinating insight into the region’s history and also the changes in framing styles. The three large exhibition spaces are extremely well lit by a dedicated lighting system, which adds greatly to the quality of the viewers’ experience and many visitors are surprised by the roomy and well-equipped gallery. The Bright Art Gallery is managed by a volunteer committee which is assisted during exhibitions by volunteer gallery members. All moneys raised are used for ongoing improvements or to support community youth awards and art workshops. The Winter Exhibition is open daily from 10am to 4pm, June 26 to July 11 (Victorian school holidays) so bring the kids or grandkids along and share a love of art with the next generation.

SNOW DAYS: Oil paintings such as this, entitled Effect of Snow by Annemarie Wiegerinck will be on display during the Winter Exhibition this year.

Events at Dinner Plain THERE is plenty that comes to mind when you think of Dinner Plain in winter. From the unique mountain architecture to the native snowgums that line the streets. Even the homely environment of warming by a wood-fire as the snow piles up outside. One undeniably iconic element is the snow dogs, an ever-present sight at Australia’s only alpine village to completely welcome visitors with their pets. It stands to reason that the nation’s longest running sled dog event is held at Dinner Plain, and is back once again in 2021. The Dinner Plain Sled Dog Sprint is a winter show-stopper, a weekend where people come from far and wide to take part in the unique atmosphere. Most years it attracts numerous teams with lots of dogs, mostly Siberian Huskies and Alaskan

Since its first race in 1994, the event hosted an unbroken run of 26 years until 2020 and COVID-19 broke the streak. But 12 months on, Dinner Plain is ready to bring back this classic event to its snowy trails. August 14 and 15 has been locked

in and a new organising committee is excited to bring some new elements to the format. On the cards are more meet and greet opportunities (because everyone loves to cuddle a husky!) and a unique skijoring category combining cross country skiers with sled dogs.

The spectacle is worth the trip alone but there’s also fun to be had by taking part yourself. Dinner Plain is home base for Howling Husky Sled Dog Tours, giving the opportunity to ride on the back of with your own dog sled team. Racing through the alpine snowgums is definitely one to chalk up on the must-do list. There hasn’t been a winter as eagerly anticipated as 2021 with headlining opening festivities on June 12 including a grand fireworks display and outdoor snow party, hosted by none other than resident party-starter DJ Eddy. Properties are booking up quickly but you can still get a great spot locked in before winter gets too close. In the heart of Kelly country Kate’s Cottage, Gifts and Souvenirs shop is named after Ned Kelly’s sister, Kate and is a replica of the ramshackle hut the Kelly family lived in; much loved by owners Chris and Rod Gerrett. The pair have lived in Kelly country their whole lives and its history has surrounded them since dancing with descendants of the Greta mob as youngsters to finding, by chance, the business about to be listed for sale and buying it 36 years ago. “It was in a pretty terrible state but we cleaned it up and the story just keeps on expanding as donated historic items arrive, sometimes anonymously to be preserved for display in the museum, so, the story continues and grows,” Chris said. The shop and Kelly Display is situated opposite the “Big

Ned Kelly” Statue on the corner of Gladstone and Kate Streets, Glenrowan and features a huge range of interesting and exciting Ned Kelly and Australiana gifts and souvenirs. Step through the back of the shop and into the highly recommended Ned Kelly Museum; the story unfolds before you as you follow the interpretive display clockwise in both picture and panel. Push and the heavy old door creaks open to the yard where you will step into another era to an authentic replica of the Kelly homestead, blacksmith shed, cheeky talking cockatoos and rustic covered picnic area. Life was tough for the Kellys... you will come away appreciative of your home with all it its modern cons and appliances.

JAMIESON is one of Victoria’s hidden gems, with a population of only 250 people and plenty of unspoilt bushland. Located at the south-east corner of Lake Eildon at the junction of the Goulburn and Jamieson Rivers, the 62km of partially unsealed road from Jamieson to Eildon offer gorgeous scenery as it follows the southern boundary of the Lake Eildon National Park. Nestled in a picturesque valley, the township of Jamieson is bordered on three sides by the Jamieson River. A thriving gold mining town in the 1860s, gold mining had all but ceased by the early 1900s and tourism took over as Jamieson’s main industry. For history buffs, the Jamieson Museum will take you back to those heady gold rush days with artefacts and photographs. For those who want to explore the

surrounding area, there are plenty of BBQ and picnic areas where you can swim, kayak or fish. There are also plenty of bush trails to walk, ride your horse or bike or simply spend some time birdwatching. Dirt bike riding and four wheel driving adventures are also popular adventures. Jamieson Brewery and Grill is also located in Jamieson and has sat on the banks of the Goulburn River for more than half a century. It was one of the first micro breweries in Victoria and has a reputation for high quality ales and hospitable country charm. The brewery is family and pet friendly and there’s a courtesy bus which will take you to and from caravan parks and camp sites around the region but bookings are essential. So, next time you’re wondering where to go book yourself a getaway in Jamieson.

Valley fit for kings, queens and everyone else THE King Valley is stunningly picturesque and rich with history including Aboriginal occupation, bushranging activities by Harry Power and the Kelly Gang and 19th century Chinese and 20th century Italian immigrants. These men and women brought skills as market gardeners, tobacco growers and merchants and Italian migrants arrived in the region in the 1940s and 1950s, growing tobacco alongside their Chinese counterparts. Of course it was not long before the potential to produce European wine varietals was realised and today the

wine offerings that come from the King Valley are known throughout Australia and overseas. The breathtaking beauty of the King Valley with the Victorian Alps as a backdrop is a good enough reason to visit, but the food and wine trail is something else to behold. From country pubs and cafes to the wineries and breweries who offer picnic

Lighting up the night in Mansfield CELEBRATING the festival’s seventh year in 2021, the Mansfield Lantern Festival brings light and warmth to the heart of Mansfield on Saturday June 19. Held on the Saturday closest to the longest night of the year - the Winter Solstice - festivities begin as dusk descends at 5pm, on High Street in the middle of town, with the party continuing into the night. A night market of local food and wine, wandering street performers and live music, families and friends and strangers alike come together, gathering around blazing firepits, glorying in the sea of brightly coloured lanterns. In previous years, lantern making workshops have been held in the build-up to the event, creating that excitement for younger members of the community, keen to turn their imaginings into wonderous light-up pieces of art. A family friendly community festival, everyone is invited to attend - in fact the more the merrier. This year in conjunction with the festival a Mystery Dinner has been planned. A ticketed event, this progressive evening begins at 6pm, with participants finding out on the night where they will be enjoying their first course. It’s all about breathing life and warmth into the wintery streets of this country town, with light exhibitions, fairy lights and lanterns festooning the main street, and as a new addition, a photographic scavenger hunt complete with prizes will bring an element of fun. As the winter solstice is the reason for the celebration, the evening is likely to be a cold one, so rug up accordingly, and bring an umbrella, as a little bit of rain won’t spoil the festivities.

FIERY ATTRACTION: The Mansfield Lantern Festival will include a night market and entertainers like Chris Morant (pictured).

Historical Milawa THE history of Milawa dates back to the time of the Aboriginal tribe of Pangerang, who were a sub-clan who occupied much of North East Victoria including lands in the Milawa area. IN 1824 explorers Hume and Hovell passed through Milawa and Hovell named the area Oxley Plains after Sir John Oxley, Surveyor General of the Colony of NSW. The cemetery was established in 1864 and was expanded by approximately two acres within the first 12 months. The original Milawa hotel - the Commercial Hotel - was built in 1870 and the Milawa Town Hall, which was

a Mechanics Institute and included a free library and spacious hall opened in 1889. In 1891, a dairy company (Milawa Butter Factory) was established and by 1896, it was one of the largest in Australia. John Francis Brown was 18 years old in 1885 when he planted 10 acres of Riesling, Muscat and Shiraz grapes on the Milawa property, which is one of the most well known wineries in Victoria. Many of the buildings are still in existence, though not all still carry on their original businesses. Take a walk around Milawa today to immerse yourself in its history.

Run by Lee Docherty, this lifestyle store and creative studio offers everything from soaps to lip balms, candles to botanically dyed textiles. A maker at heart, Lee loves to dabble in any crafty activity, and often holds workshops for anyone interested in making their own soap or bath bombs. “Our retail space is full of beautiful lifestyle products that are carefully sourced from small local producers through to ethical and sustainable makers across the globe,” she said. “In store, you will find local items like delicious Gundowring ice cream and Beechworth’s Billson’s cordial and sodas, through to Fair-trade women’s and children’s clothing from India.” Gather & Harvest supports ethical and sustainable products, such as the glasses used for their candles.

ESTABLISHED in the 1940s, Mt Beauty was originally a base for workers on the Kiewa-Hydro Electric Scheme, but is now known as a popular tourist town due to its close proximity to the Falls Creek, Mt Buffalo and Mt Hotham skiing resorts. Separated from the small township of Tawonga South by the Kiewa River, the two sit at the base of the state’s highest mountain - Mount Bogong. Mt Beauty is well known for its wine, produce and gourmet food and there are a number of wineries in the area who specialise in premium cool climate wines like Pinot Noir and Tuscan grape varieties. There is even a craft brewery for visitors who prefer hops to grapes. Local cafés and restaurants offer gourmet home-style cooking, pizza, steak, seafood and poultry options

but if that sounds a bit fancy, there is also a tavern and a hotel which offer pub classics alongside standard and boutique beer, wine, cocktails or cider. Many visitors use Mt Beauty for their off-mountain accommodation during the snow season and there is a supermarket, Post Office, specialty shops and pampering options in the main streets of Hollands Street and Kiewa Crescent. For the more adventurous, action packed mountain bike is on offer as you make your way around the Big Hill Mountain Bike Park trails. Keen anglers also love to head to the area for in-season fishing in local rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Whether you want to admire the scenery, use it as your base or just relax and recuperate, Mt Beauty is the place to do it this winter.

SHEPPARTON

OLD SCHOOL: There are a number of different collections held by the museum which is set to open in August 2021. PHOTO: Darren Linton

MOVE is building an amazing experience SHEPPARTON’S Museum of Vehicle Evolution at Emerald Bank is a major new attraction with something for everyone to explore and discover. The concept for the museum was to place transport at the centre of a story about how we lived, worked and prospered. A great example is the post World War II boom in transport, sparked by access to cheap surplus army vehicles which were picked up by orchardists to service the fruit industry. The Loel Thomson Clothing Collection, which will be on North East Tourist News - Winter 2021

permanent public display for the first time in a purpose-built part of MOVE, might seem incongruous alongside trucks, cars, motorcycles and bicycles, but it actually fits well. The collection covers 200 years of clothing and through the 10,000 items explores a social history. Mostly it isn’t high fashion, it is what Australians wore every day to work and socialise. When the fruit growers took the truck to town, we can also see how they dressed, and through the eclectic items in the Dick Clayton Collection, we can also see how

they communicated and were entertained. In the Truck Hall, legends of the industry are celebrated but alongside their historic vehicles are the stories of families, migration, struggle and prosperity. The Shepparton region still has a quarter of the registered trucks in Victoria and the trajectory of that growth is intertwined with soldier settlement, irrigation, agriculture and food processing. Australia’s oldest operating family business is celebrated in the Furphy Museum, where artefacts and anecdotes from more than 150

years of history tell a fascinating story. MOVE is also fortunate to have the amazing Farren Bicycle Collection, the Garth Wallace Collection of rare and mostly unrestored Harley Davidson motorcycles. MOVE is a not-for-profit community enterprise backed by grants from the Australian Government, Victorian Government and Greater Shepparton City Council. Designed by architect Alister Sarris, the $5.8 million museum is due to open in August 2021.

Stay at the Tungamah Hotel and explore the area NOTEWORTHY: Artist Sobrane spent a number of weeks creating these gorgeous silo art pieces. PHOTO: Pete Broadhead LET’S meet at the Tungamah Hotel. Tungamah? Never heard of it. Where is it? Located in the Goulburn Valley region on the banks of Boosey Creek, 40-odd kilometres from Wangaratta, Benalla and Shepparton, and less than 30 kilometres from Cobram and Yarrawonga, this historic town calls the Shire of Moira home. The town itself was once a hive of activity and incorporates a number of significant sites to explore, with buildings which date back to the early 1880s. These include Tungamah Store, Peter Peters’ Store, Tungamah Shire Offices, Victoria Hotel, Tungamah garage, Tungamah timber yards, National Bank of Australasia, the pharmacy/bakery, Post Office, court house and the Tungamah Hotel. With a family friendly atmosphere and great meals, accommodation and live entertainment, the Tungamah Hotel is open seven days a week and should be high on your

list of places to visit. Built in 1891 on the same site to replace the earlier pub which was destroyed by fire, the hotel is now heritage listed and offers a large beer garden and accommodation along with the capability to host functions. Local attractions include the fully operational and working silo which, although fenced off for safety, offers a designated viewing area inside the silo complex for the fantastic silo art. You’ll see a number of muchloved Australian birds including a kookaburra, a pink and grey galah and Sulphur-crested cockatoo on the smaller of the silos and a mural of dancing brolgas on the taller silos from a unique vantage point and be able to tick them off your silo art trail bucket list. After a day of sight-seeing, the Tungamah Hotel is the perfect place to enjoy a hearty meal, a nice cold beverage and a soft place to lay your head so make your reservation today.

AROUND THE REGION

Awarded for off the grid initiatives THE Vine Hotel in Wangaratta’s move to solar power helped it win ‘Best Environmental Initiative’ at the Australian Hotel Association State Awards for Excellence in May 2021. Having installed 144 solar panels on their roof and in adjacent vacant land, the pub is now fully solar powered during the day. They also use 100 per cent recycle treated water from their onsite well to water their lawns and for their misting system to keep their patrons cool in the beer garden. “We have plans to build accommodation at The Vine to meet the demand in the area due to the cycle tourism boom and these will also be environmentally friendly,” Owner and manager, Jimmy Ladgrove said. In addition to taking out the Best Environmental Initiative award, The Vine was also a finalist in eight separate categories. Built in the late 1800s, the hotel stands as proud as it did during the 19th century, the character of this Australian treasure preserved by the local family who owns it. The pub’s original red bricks, rustic finishings and old-time chandeliers transport visitors back in time, while newer additions perfectly set the scene for relaxed get togethers. The heritage listed building has seen a lot of improvements over the past few years with their outdoor space now including an outdoor kitchen, cocktail van, an undercover fully heated and cooled decking area and beer garden. Inside, two indoor bars with more than 10 beers on tap, a huge selection of the best wines, premium spirits, soft drinks and cordials from the region and an open fire make it the perfect venue for your wedding reception and/or North East Tourist News - Winter 2021

VINES OF DISTINCTION: The Vine Hotel was built in the 1800s and is an Australian treasure. PHOTO: Coby Field ceremony or your next celebration. The hotel has its place in history as a drinking hole of Ned Kelly and 20 slightly burnt playing cards were found behind an old mantelpiece above the fireplace, which is an

original part of the hotel, during renovations in 2020. There is also a myth that goes with the pub, which is that Ned Kelly dug a tunnel in the cellar to hide away from the police under a

railway track. The vast cellar is now home to a museum and is unusually large, which is impressive given that it would have been dug out by hand using picks, shovels and ploughs.
