Historic treasures await you in Chiltern WITH Victoria now re-open for those living in Melbourne to travel the rest of the state, it’s a great time to remind you why Chiltern should be high on your list of places to visit. Chiltern became prominent following the discovery of gold in the 1850s and has remained a thriving hub of food, culture and community spirit. At least 20 buildings in the township are of historical interest or owned by the National Trust, with the Federal Standard newspaper office, the famous Dow’s Pharmacy and Lakeview House (former home of renowned author Henry Handel Richardson) among them. The Chiltern Mount Pilot National Park is only a short drive from the town centre, with highlights including the Yeddonba Indigenous rock paintings, goldfield relics and over 200

species of Australia’s most loved native birds in their own habitat. The Mount Pilot Lookout offers 360-degree views of the countryside. If you spend time out there you may also see kangaroos, echidnas and wallabies roaming free. Be sure to take your binoculars to look for the elusive Regent Honeyeater. In the courtyard of the historic Star Hotel and Theatre is a grapevine which was planted in 1867. With a trunk that measures 1.84 metres and a branch which is 12 metres long, it is reputedly the largest in the world and is a sight to behold. The Chiltern Athenaeum showcases many items from the history of the township and tells the tales of the men and women who worked and lived around the area over the past 170 years. For the history buffs and bargain collectors, Chiltern has

and crowds who have travelled from all over the country to experience the region. Whether you enjoy exploring stores, discovering local artisans or antiques, or prefer to take a bike and your hiking shoes to get among nature and feel the vastness of the open country, Chiltern has something for everyone so come and say hi today.

Not simply hero or villain INDIGO Shire, in conjunction with the Victorian State Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund, is making a major investment in cultural heritage interpretation and tourism in the heart of the Beechworth Historic Precinct. Given the significance of the Beechworth Courthouse during 1878 and 1880 when it held more than 40 trials and hearings for the notorious Kelly Gang and their sympathisers, this new project will refocus the attention from Ned himself and delve into the inner workings of the legal system. Combining traditional museum displays, original artefacts, museum signage and modern projection technologies, the undertaking is set to give visitors a deeper understanding of the workings of the legal system of the time, who was employed at the courthouse, what their roles were, the history of the courthouse, and its transformation into a heritage site in the late 20th century.

ORDER IN THE COURT: The new undertaking due to open in 2022 will focus on the workings of the Australian legal system. “It’s a very exciting project that we’re undertaking and we’re really passionate about it,” said Indigo Shire Council’s Burke Museum and cultural heritage manager, Cameron Auty. “It won’t simply ask - was Ned a

hero or a villain? “Rather, we will offer stories about the people who worked in the courthouse and insights into Australia’s legal history.” The project seeks to raise the

level of interpretation, ensuring an immersive, authentic and educative experience for all visitors. Design and installation will take place in 2021 and 2022 with the opening set for July 2022.

150 years of quality wines ALTHOUGH 2020 has been a year where milestones have been difficult to celebrate with extended family, friends or customers, it doesn’t stop them from rolling around. This is particularly true for Campbells of Rutherglen, with 2020 marking their 150th year of family winemaking. Fifth generation Julie Campbell, is the winemaker and custodian of the iconic Campbell’s style while Jane Campbell is Managing Director and oversees all elements of the winery and cellar door in Rutherglen and abroad. The Campbell’s story at Rutherglen began in 1870 and is one of evolution, tenacity and determination, building on the experience of generations past with a dedication to innovation. BERRY GOOD: Make sure you visit Schmidt’s Strawberry Winery this summer to taste their delicious wines or buy a punnet of their strawberries.

Award winning strawberry wines SET amidst acres of lush strawberry fields in Allans Flat, approximately five kilometres from Yackandandah, Schmidt’s Strawberry Winery should be included on your list of ‘things to see and do’ this summer. Schmidt’s is the oldest strawberry winery in Australia, owned and operated by brothers Martin and Michael Schmidt who are third generation strawberry growers/ winemakers. Using a traditional family method, the award winning Schmidt’s Strawberry Wine has won friends from all over Australia. Strawberry wine is often a summer favourite and can be served at room temperature or chilled. It pairs well with chocolate and can be a delicious dessert wine

because of its sweet and fruity taste. Alternatively, you could pour it over a bowl of ice-cream, although Schmidt’s have a strawberry liqueur they recommend for that instead. Farm fresh, full-flavoured Allans Flat strawberries are also available in punnets or trays from the cellar door when in season - which is generally from September to December. Make sure you pack an esky and put them out of reach in the boot though or they might be all gone by the time you get to your accommodation or back home! With dry, semi-sweet and sweet strawberry wines to tempt your tastebuds, as well as the sensational strawberry liqueur to pour over a strawberry daiquiri, call in today to discover a new favourite name in wine.

Enjoy some time at ‘the cellar’ FROM Bagni di Lucca in Italy to the King Valley region of North East Victoria, Gino Corsini has called many places home and turned his hand to jobs which have included wood cutting, blacksmith, baker, stone mason, fish and chip shop owner, tobacco farmer and finally wine maker.

In 1980, with his eldest son Peter working alongside him on the farm, Gino decided to plant their first lot of vines on their property. Some grapes were sold, with the rest kept by Gino to continue his family tradition of making his own wine for family and friends in the traditional methods passed down

through the generations with no preservatives added. In 1995, Gino and his wife, Carmel, decided to get a permit and label their wine La Cantina, meaning ‘The Cellar’ in Italian and their cellar door was built two years later in a traditional Tuscan-style building made from stone. The winery has grown every year and is now sold nation wide. La Cantina King Valley is one of only a few wineries in Australia which produces all their wines with no preservatives added, retaining

the full characteristics of each grape variety. La Cantina King Valley wines offer Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Saperavi, which is a Russian red varietal, and Nonno’s fortified and sparkling Chardonnay as well. All wines are vegan friendly and their 2018 Saperavi was recently awarded 95 points and a gold medal in the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show. So make sure you drop in and give them all a try this summer.

Award winning wineries live here THE 2021 Halliday Wine Companion Awards have been released following James Halliday and his team of tasters sampled more than 9000 wines from all over Australia. Only a handful of exceptional producers are chosen by the expert panel and awarded their highest accolades for the ‘best of’ the year. In Victoria, we are blessed with some truly perfect and unique regions for grape growing and wine producing and many of our regular advertisers in the North East, High Country and Goulburn Murray Tourist News magazine have featured in the list at one time or another. There are more than 800 wineries and 600 cellar doors in 20 wine regions across Victoria which means you’re sure to find some of Australia’s best and most consistent top-quality wines right here in our own state. All wineries - large and small -

MANSFIELD: Ros Ritchie Wines have felt the impacts of a challenging 2020. Over the Christmas/New Year period they fought to save their livelihoods which were threatened by the bushfires. Then the Coronavirus

pandemic arrived and put a halt to much of their normal operations. Lockdowns and gathering restrictions affected them from holding annual events like the Queen’s Birthday

weekend celebrations, weekly classes and workshops, cellar door sales and onsite restaurant meals. Still, most wineries have found a way to continue to supply their customers, offering home delivery, extending their existing delivery services and even offering home delivery or takeaway from the restaurant side of their businesses and have been heartened by the support they have received from locals. We know that our wineries will come back bigger and better in the months to come and we will celebrate and look forward to enjoyed their pinot noir, chardonnay, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, durif and nebbiolo, prosecco, riesling, fiano and vermentino drops with friends and family, and with the winemakers themselves just as soon as we can.

Beechworth wine; the quiet achiever OFTEN referred to as the ‘younger sibling’ of the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsular, Beechworth’s wine region produces some of the best in the country. The most commonly grown varieties include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, generally grown at higher altitudes, with Shiraz and Syrah grown in the lower areas. Although Beechworth is a relatively small wine producing area, spread throughout the hills and surrounds are a choice of superb wineries and cellar door experiences. Defined as a hillside growing region, Beechworth’s climate of sunny days allows crops to ripen with cool nights helping to temper the heat, producing excellent high quality grapes. With COVID-19 restrictions eased and the warmer weather here, now is the time to explore what the historic region has to offer. Among the must-see of wineries and cellar doors include Pennyweight Winery, Haldon Estate Wines, Beechworth Wine Estates, Baarmutha Wines, Eldorado Road Cellar Door Cantina, Weathercraft Wine and Indigo Vineyard.

CHEERS: With COVID-19 restrictions easing all the time, there has not been a better time this year to visit the Beechworth wine region.

Wine enthusiasts wanting to mix up their experience can also take the Tour de Vines, a cycling tour with everything arranged and exclusive access to winemakers starting from Beechworth and ending in Bright. Opening times do vary across cellar doors

and vineyards, so be sure to check in advance and book ahead to get the most out of your experience. Vineyards may also offer take-away and home delivery options too, if you don’t happen to be able to book a space.

EXPERIENCE IT ALL: You may be set on a day trip, but don’t be surprised if you extend your stay. PHOTO: Cofield Wines

So much to see, experience and taste WINE lovers who have been counting down the days until they can hit the tasting trail once again would be hard pressed to find a better location than North East Victoria. Whether you choose to stay closer to the border or more centrally in townships like Wangaratta, Bright, Beechworth or Milawa, there are five very different wine regions which can be accessed as part of a big day out or an overnight stay. Each offer an entirely different landscape to explore and a range of experiences to indulge in, whether visitors would like to sample a variety the region is renowned for or try something new. Tour through the scenic Alpine valleys, surrounded by majestic mountainsides, where

the multitude of microclimates have allowed 33 different grape varieties to flourish, ranging from traditional Chardonnay and Shiraz through to more unusual styles. In the beautiful and historic region of Beechworth you can find some of Australia’s best Chardonnay, but the area also produces renowned Pinot Noir and other cool-climate varietals. In Glenrowan where families have been growing wine grapes for 130 years there are fullbodied reds such as Shiraz which are known for their boldness and character, along with fragrant whites and fortified wines. While Prosecco may be high on the list for

those visiting the King Valley, other Italian varieties including Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio, Dolcetto, Arneis and Barbera also thrive in vineyards bordered by the pristine King River. In Rutherglen which boasts 150 years of winemaking, the long hot days and cool nights provide ideal conditions for the more than 20 wineries which call the area home, and while Shiraz, Durif and Cabernet may be the target varieties to taste, you can’t go home without a bottle of the Muscat or Topaque which is a signature of many of the sixth and seventh generation winemakers. By all means visit for a day, but you will wish you had made it a week.

BEECHWORTH

Preserving an icon A FIXTURE of Beechworth since the 1860s, Mayday Hills began life as a ‘lunatic asylum’, and still draws locals and visitors, more than 150 years since opening. It’s difficult not to be affected by the history that emanates from Beechworth’s Mayday Hills. While it may initially draw you in with its grand façade and sweeping grounds, it’s the site’s former life as a ‘lunatic asylum’, and the mood evoked by its buildings - and particularly its windows - that holds the attention. Stories seem to seep from every brick. Located at the top of Albert Road in Beechworth, Mayday Hills was once one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria. It opened as the Beechworth Asylum in October, 1867, and at its peak of operation, the facility was home to more than 1200 patients and 500 staff. The asylum was surrounded by almost 106 hectares of farmland, ensuring it was self-sufficient with its own piggery, orchards, kitchen gardens, fields, stables and barn, which provided patients with productive work. For recreation, the site included tennis courts, an oval and cricket pavilion, kiosk and theatre. Declared architecturally significant by the Heritage Trust of Victoria, Mayday Hills is recognised for its original extensive complex of Italianate-style asylum buildings.

GRAND FRONTAGE: Mayday Hills has been declared architecturally significant by the Heritage Trust of Victoria. Asylum Ghost Tours take visitors through the deserted buildings, with guides sharing stories and myths of patients such as James Kelly, uncle of notorious bushranger Ned Kelly, and Ida Pender, the wife of gangster Squizzy Taylor. The business offers ghost tours,

history tours, photography tours, paranormal investigations, horror film screenings and regular sleepovers, which can take place during the day, or in an entirely new light at night-time. Those whose interests tend more towards the natural than the

supernatural may be interested in the Beechworth Treescape Group’s brochure, available from the 56room George Kerferd Hotel (formerly Kerferd Clinic) on the Mayday Hills site, from the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre or online at www.explorebeechworth.com.au.

Beechworth café - good for the soul

THE year 2020 has certainly brought its share of ups and downs for the hospitality industry and Rustique Soul in Beechworth is no different. But as we enter the last month of the year, there is finally a silver lining with border bubbles and regional restrictions being lifted and visitors flooding into our towns from all over Victoria and some even from NSW. Rustique Soul cafe in Beechworth had to close during the lockdowns with owner Paula Rangi hoping they would get to open before 2021. “It was so exciting to be able to open again when lockdown one ended, but it didn’t last long before we were into lockdown two and I was worried that we may not be able to re-open at all given the fear and so much being unknown at that time. “But we’re back and it’s fantastic to have so many locals as regulars ordering their morning coffees, snacks and lunches. “We’re also inundated with residents from surrounding towns like Yackandandah, Wangaratta and Myrtleford who are glad to be able to get out and about again and travel to our little patch of paradise.” In addition to delicious coffee, Paula and her team make fresh food daily. “I describe it as soul food or comfort food,” Paula said. “It’s food that my grandma taught me how to cook so when we serve it, it reminds us of growing up within our families, unconditional love and the good times we shared over a meal and a drink. “We get a real joy out of seeing our customers sharing and enjoying our food with people who are special to them.”

SOUL FOOD: Delicious treats can be found at Rustique Soul cafe in Beechworth. Set in the beautifully historic town of Beechworth, Rustique cafe invites you to their relaxed, friendly courtyard garden to enjoy a coffee or a soul-filling meal. And when you’ve re-fuelled your

BEECHWORTH

Beechworth offers smorgasbord of experiences WHETHER it’s adventure, history or simply tranquillity you’re seeking, Beechworth can satisfy all of these seemingly unrelated pursuits. The town’s renowned streetscape offers visitors a sense of walking through the past, as they wander past deep stone gutters and shopfronts reminiscent of the region’s gold rush days. Beechworth’s historic precinct, in the heart of the town, features the Burke Museum, courthouse, telegraph station, powder magazine and vault. Each building has tales seeping from its walls and surrounds - not least the district’s part in the story of bushranger Ned Kelly. Walking tours through this area offer an insight into its history, but even a visit to the natural features that surround the town evoke a feeling that you could indeed be stepping back into the late 1800s. Among these are Woolshed Falls and the Beechworth Gorge; it’s certainly not hard, while you’re walking through the granite outcrops and soaking in the rock pools in these natural wonders, to cast your mind back to what it might have been

Boutique linen in the heart of Beechworth THE quaint and beautiful town of Beechworth provides the perfect store location for boutique linen label Eva’s Sunday. Cross the stone threshold into this linen wonderland and you won’t be disappointed. The retail space is quirky, unconventional and put together with a keen eye for colour and texture. Old ladders and brass piping become hanging racks and etched away plaster reveals original brickwork. A centuries’ old door from India is hung ‘barn style’ and never fails to be praised (often by trailing husbands). The clothing design is classic but has an edge; unexpected buttons add detail, generous facings, lovely ties, deep inverted pleats and much more. The collection is designed in the nearby Eva’s Sunday Studio, located approximately 30 minutes from Beechworth in the town

that 50% of our garments are now made in Melbourne,” said label owner Nic MacIsaac. As with all businesses, COVID-19

has presented its challenges for this independent women’s clothing label. Lockdown has seen the temporary closure of the Beechworth store along with the two Melbourne locations, Fitzroy and Hawthorn. “It has been difficult but we have remained optimistic and focused on delivering our customers around Australia and New Zealand the very best service and product. Our online store has been critical to this.” Covid-19 has provided the impetus for a new venture at the label; the production of custom made garments and the amazing community of women have supported this wholeheartedly so it is becoming an integral part of their offering. In addition to their own label, Eva’s Sunday also stock candles and room spray by Melbourne based SOH, bags by Rose & Lyle and scarves by Dog & Boy.

The all new Dinner Plain THIS summer Dinner Plain is emerging from a year like no other. The quiet mountain village, just 10 minutes beyond Mount Hotham, has endured everything from bushfires to lockdowns and a cancelled snow season to boot. But just like the resilience of its iconic twisted snowgums, Dinner Plain Alpine Village is bouncing back in a big way. With Christmas around the corner, Dinner Plain is planning to light up in the most literal way possible. Get out and about this summer DAVID Chitty and his leader team at Adventure Guides Australia are relishing the opportunity to be out in the mountains and rivers of the North East and taking happy customers on amazing adventures again. Although COVID restrictions were at times challenging, it did not adversely affected how they operate tours. “We actually used the time where we couldn’t operate with customers to train our staff in working in a changing COVID-19 environment and we practised using those methods,” said David. “So far using masks hasn’t hindered anything we do and the groups we’ve had recently - including a school group - have had no issues either using masks or managing social distancing.” Adventure Guides offer half-day, full day or multi-day programs

and have regular abseiling, rock climbing and kayaking tours around Bright, Mt Buffalo and Beechworth or you can book a private adventure. During the coming ‘green’ season you can abseil four, eight, 10, 25, 35 or 45 metre cliffs and for the hardcore adventurer ask about the 250 metre south wall. Amazing rock climbing experiences and dry canyoning at Mount Buffalo (which is suitable for families) are also available. You also might like to try an achievable white water kayaking or pack rafting experience down the Ovens River on board a kayak or pack raft through the Ovens River rapids at Bright. BRIGHT SPARK: Bright Art Gallery is looking forward to their new exhibition.

Summer celebration with Bright artists THE summer exhibition at the Bright Art Gallery is a reason for celebration. After a challenging year of having one exhibition after another cancelled due to bushfires, followed by Covid-19, they are ready to open, in support of their regional artists. Alpine Artists are the Bright Art Gallery’s ever expanding artist members. The summer exhibition - entitled Celebrating Alpine Artists - will feature paintings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, glassware, jewellery, woodwork and fabric art. Opening on November 28 it will run until January 25, 2021, with a small Christmas/New Year break.

In September the Gallery was saddened by the sudden loss of one of their renowned local artists, Brian Elvish, and as part of the summer exhibition, the ‘Brian Elvish Retrospective’ will celebrate his contribution to the local art world and community. Brian was a traditional landscape painter, his oil paintings of local scenery, in particular the rivers and mountains he loved, feature in many homes. Their owners have generously lent these to the gallery for what will be a wonderful tribute to Brian. The Bright Art Gallery is managed and run 100 per cent by volunteers

and is a beautiful large gallery with three separate exhibition spaces. So when you’re planning your summer getaway in Bright, make

sure the Bright Art Gallery is at the top of your list as ‘Celebrating Alpine Artists’ promises to be a delight for every visitor.

THE township of Glenrowan is well known for its deep roots in Australia’s colonial history, but has a whole lot more to offer its visitors. The town, nestled at the bottom of Mount Glenrowan, is the site of the ďŹ nal siege and capture of Ned Kelly and his gang in 1880 and their story is preserved in attractions, museums and historic walks. You can easily explore the town on foot; pick up a copy of the Glenrowan Heritage Siege Precinct walking map from one of the local business or from the local information stand at the Glenrowan Vintage Hall & Cafe. This helpful yer will guide you around key Ned Kelly Gang sites of signiďŹ cance such as the Ann Jones’ Glenrowan Inn, Police Shelter Site, Gravel Contractors Encampment, Ned Kelly Capture Site, McDonnell’s Railway Tavern and much more. With roots steeped in history, you will ďŹ nd many local characters and people willing to have - or spin - a yarn. Outside of the Ned Kelly world, Glenrowan is a prime area for some great walking trails.

With the Alpine Views walk, Warby Falls Heritage Trail and Chick Hill walk surrounding Glenrowan you can enjoy the view of the town and the native bushlands. The 130 years of wine growing has also established Glenrowan’s reputation for full bodied reds, fragrant whites and deliciously renowned fortiďŹ ed wines. The wines of Glenrowan remain robust, with modern ways adding sophistication; this wine region’s cellar doors are intimate, historic and welcoming. Summer is a wonderful time around Glenrowan for fruit lovers with the growers of the region producing strawberries, cherries, nectarines and peaches with a number of these orchards open to the public. Who can resist freshly picked tree ripened, sun kissed summer fruits (also available as jam, ice cream, preserves and chutney throughout the year)? KING VALLEY

Brewing in historic, picturesque surrounds KING River Brewing are a micro brewery located in the picturesque King Valley in North East Victoria and is owned by husband and wife team Nathan and Brianna Munt. In the heartland of second and third generation Italian and European immigrant farmlands, the King Valley has a wonderful history of varied industries from hops, dairy and livestock to wineries, produce and now beer! King River Brewing is proud to be part of the local enterprise and their rustic tasting room is built inside the property’s original tobacco kiln, the brewery housed inside the old tobacco grading shed and the tap room decor features tobacco bales branded with the local family names from the region, providing some history and insight of the post-war King Valley tobacco industry. They make their own beer right on site and offer not only a core range of fresh beers on the six rotating taps, but seasonal special releases as well. Their brewery produces high quality and wellbalanced beers and delivers full flavour from natural processes with drinkability favoured above all else. With a gentle nod to their location, they focus on both farmhouse and easy drinking styles of beers.

Ethical and sustainable products in store GATHER and Harvest was established by sistersin-law, Caroline and Lee in 2018. Both women are residents of the beautiful Kiewa Valley and happily raise their families in the fresh high country air alongside their business venture, which aims to stock creative, homemade and ethical products. One such product comes all the way from Denpasar in Bali, where Ketut makes candle vessels for Gather and Harvest. Ketut collects used champagne bottles from hotels, bars and resorts then cuts and sands them down into the beautiful and unique glasses. Each vessel takes considerable time and skill to create and is creating a positive change in Ketut’s life. Several years ago, she attended Bali Street Mum’s charity project, where she learnt to cut bottles into glasses. Now Ketut no longer attends the centre, working from her home instead and teaching her skills to other impoverished women, so they too can make a difference in their own lives.

PRESENTS HERE: Gift packs are a wonderful option for family and friends. You can see the fruits of Ketut’s labours at Gather and Harvest, alongside other products which include bath bombs, lip balm, candles, soaps, teas, textiles and gift packs. When COVID restrictions allow, workshops will be held once again - see their website and www. gatherandharvest.com.au for upcoming dates or call in and see Caroline and Lee today.

WANGARATTA

All will be revealed in gallery’s digitisation project THE Wangaratta Art Gallery is one of six public galleries in Victoria to be selected for a pilot project by Creative Victoria to create digital records of the artworks in its collection. This initiative involves digitising the collection and assisting with the gallery’s responsibility to care for the collection and make it more accessible. Gallery director Simone Nolan said digitising a collection is a highly complex and labourintensive task, carried out by trained staff members. She said the Roadshow Project will involve experts, conservators and digital photographers working in residence to support the project’s outcomes. “This project and exhibition called “Revealed: The Regional Digitisation Roadshow” gives the community the opportunity to come and watch the digitisation process and see what happens behind the scenes, while discovering the hidden gems within the Wangaratta Art Gallery collection,” she said. “In this process there will be an opportunity for visitors

to find out about conservation processes and the nature of archival materials.” Over several weeks the process will reveal and present four main themes within the collection including paintings and works on paper, small objects and sculpture, textiles and fabric art and the Rural City of Wangaratta Collection. Once the digitisation is complete, the gallery will celebrate by presenting a salon show of highlights from the collection, revealing what the collection holds and exposing the hidden gems often kept away in storage. The project and exhibition will continue throughout the summer months, right through until midJanuary 2021. Gallery staff will also continue to provide ongoing online curatorial talks, live onsite lectures and workshops. The project is supported by Creative Victoria under the Regional Digitisation Roadshow funding, and interested participants are encouraged to visit the gallery website or social platforms for programs over the summer.
