WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN ISSUE OF THE NORTH EAST TOURIST NEWS 2015.

T

here are few better places to enjoy autumn than right here in the North East. Whether it’s meandering along the leafy streets of beautiful Bright, or soaking up the mild and crisp autumn weather at a winery, cafÊ or even a leafy public park, this season is a great time to appreciate all that this region offers. The autumn months are also a time when the region is showcased with a diverse selection of festivals, highlighting everything from music to food, wine, and produce. Some of the dazzling array of local festivals include the Beechworth’s Golden Horseshoes festival, the Bright Autumn Festival, the High Country Harvest, the Mt Beauty Music Festival, and Tastes of Rutherglen. The region’s beautiful lakes, rivers, fabulous mountain walks and premier cycle rail trails also come into their own at this time of year.

It’s always a good idea to drop into your local visitor information centre for helpful advice on upcoming events and other opportunities to maximise your stay. COVER IMAGE: The High Country Harvest is one of a range of events inviting visitors to get out and about and sample the ďŹ nest food and wine the North East has to offer, and takes place across the region. UTUMN can be a magical time of year - if you pause just a little. And Chiltern is a great place to pause. The box-ironbark of the national forest that embraces Chiltern retains its wonderful green-grey foliage and stark black trunks that form a perfect milieu to the changing weather conditions and provide a wonderful backdrop for the colors of the deciduous trees that abound. While the Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park can be dark and brooding early in the morning or right on twilight, for the rest of the time it retains the mystery and warmth (even on cold days) that nature is known for in pristine settings. You might catch a glimpse of the elusive Regent honeyeater. Many do. Strolling through the park one can be forgiven for thinking they are the only person in the world. There is also plenty to see and do in Chiltern. National Trust buildings provide a warm welcome as visitors are transported back in time to days when the nation was new. Volunteers will gladly share the history of Lake View, Dow’s Pharmacy and the Federal Standard with you.

$0.& "-0/( See Chiltern’s autumn magic.

As the days close in there remains even more to see and do. Looking to the west you will experience some of the biggest and most vivid sunsets anywhere in Australia as Mother Nature puts her signature on another day. It’s now visitors are encouraged to rugup and pause a little at twilight in the park for that’s the time the forest comes

to life as the nocturnal creatures stir from their slumber and move about the canopy with grace and dexterity. It is a magical time of day. Silhouetted against the silver sky small creatures emerge from their tree holes and make their way to their feeding grounds – but you must be still. Visit Chiltern – your friends are waiting.

The historical barn on site at Brown Brothers was the original winery, and was built in the 1850s. It was recently restored and re-opened for special events and functions, including incredible rustic style weddings, and has been available for bookings since late 2014. During the restoration of the barn in 2014 a mysterious time capsule of wines was discovered. Later revealed as buried by John G Brown in 1960, these wines were a fascinating discovery. Unfortunately, no bottles survived intact, but fragments of a hand written note did survive giving them a clue – next time you visit Brown Brothers, ask Cellar Door staff the story. Milawa is only a 15 minute detour from the Hume Highway or if you’re heading to the high country or mountains, you can drive straight past their doorstep on the way.

Smallest hotel celebrates C

ELEBRATING 10 years as the smallest hotel when you’re part of the World’s Biggest Hotel family is no small feat for Beechworth hoteliers Robert and Jenelle Ransom. The couple joined Best Western in February 2005 and have spent years upgrading their 10-room Best Western Beechworth Motor Inn. “It was easily the most run down motel in Beechworth when we bought it in May 2000 – a real renovator’s delight, Robert remembers. “Since then, we’ve totally upgraded the whole property to include more quality features and services. “The key to giving your guests a rewarding experience is by understanding their expectations even before they walk through the door, Robert said. In 2006, Robert and Jenelle began refurbishing the bathrooms and ensuites,

and renovation work has barely stopped since. “Our friends and Beechworth locals comment on how great our motel looks now, Robert said. So, what’s next for Best Western Beechworth Motor Inn? “We’re in the process of applying for a planning permit to build six apartments which will diversify our range of accommodation, taking our room count to 16, Robert said. “Although, we’ll miss no longer being the smallest hotel in the World’s Biggest Hotel Family. To book a stay with Robert and Jenelle, go to bestwestern.com.au/beechworth.

SEE AND LEARN: Delve into Beechworth’s rich history on a guided walking tour. PHOTO: David Kirkland

Explore historic Beechworth A

S the autumn leaves are turning on a spectacular display of color there is no better way to explore historic Beechworth than by a guided walking tour. Period costumed guides take you on a tour of nostalgia telling tales of a bygone era of gold mining, explorers and bushrangers.

Your tour takes you through the town’s heritage hub of the Historic Precinct which dates back to the 1800s gold rush. The buildings stand as they did during the gold era with the imposing Courthouse where Ned Kelly was committed to trial, the working Telegraph Station which sends telegrams around the world

and the Ned Kelly Vault, the largest display of the Kelly Gang memorabilia. Take some time to explore the collection at the Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum, the museum houses a wide collection of Chinese history, extensive display of taxidermy birdlife, and of course the artefacts of ill-

BEECHWORTH

Business sparkles on silver anniversary T

HIS April is a special month for Beechworth business The Finer Things of Life. The well loved Beechworth business, which specialises in ďŹ ne quality, timeless pieces for the home, as well as beautiful gifts for your loved ones, is set to celebrate its silver 25th anniversary. Owners Steven and Elizabeth Mason say they are looking forward to celebrating the occasion, particularly over the Easter long weekend. She said valued customers spending over $50 during the month of April would be well rewarded, receiving a silver serving piece for their patronage.

The Finer Things of Life opened its doors on April 14, 1990, and has experienced continued success with locals and visitors to Beechworth alike over the past 25 years. While the business is ever growing and evolving, to the point where the shop has an active online presence with its own website and Facebook page, she said the appeal of the shop still boils down to its quality products and “our love and passion for our customers. She has many happy returning customers, including one customer, Carly Sessions. “When I was a little girl, growing up in Geelong, I used to come to Wangaratta on my

school holidays, Ms Sessions explained. “My grandmother would bring me to Beechworth for a day out and we would always visit The Finer Things of Life. “It was then, and now 20 years later, still is my favorite store in the world. “As a child I would stand in awe of all the beautiful things, and now as an adult it reminds

me of this wonderful time in my childhood, and now I am allowed to touch things and take them home for myself. “Thanks for providing me with the fondest of childhood memories and for the beautiful things that make me smile. The Finer Things of Life is open seven days a week at 16 Camp Street, Beechworth, and can be contacted on (03) 5728 2248.

second drinking station has been installed on the Lake Benalla walking track, thanks to a partnership between the Rotary Club of Benalla, the Tomorrow Today Foundation and the Council. The water station, located on the foreshore near the Sir Edward “Wearyâ€? Dunlop Learning Centre, is wheelchair accessible, and dispenses ďŹ ltered water. It can be used to ďŹ ll water bottles and has a ground level water bowl for dogs. The Tomorrow Today Foundation provided a grant of $5000 towards the project, with Rotary Benalla contributing $2000 and the Council covering the cost of the water supply. “The drinking stations and the three exercise stations

are a great addition to our popular Lake Benalla walking trail, said Mayor Cr Justin King. Tomorrow Today Foundation Director Tony Schneider said: “The new water station enhances the amenities already in the lakeside area, and I hope it will encourage people to exercise and enjoy outside activities. President of the Rotary Club of Benalla Sally Matheson said that Rotary was proud to be part of these ongoing projects. “The water stations and exercise stations have already proved very popular since their installation and are well used, with positive feedback from the community, she said.

HE sacriďŹ ce of generations past will be remembered during the exciting program of events during this year’s Bright Autumn Festival. The festival showcases the natural beauty of Bright and surrounding areas during autumn, when the town’s trees turn lustrous shades of red, gold and amber. This year’s festival will take place from Friday, April 24 and until Sunday, May 3. One of the highlights of the

Bright Autumn Festival is the annual Gala Day, taking place on May 2 and Grand Parade, and this year’s parade theme is “The Anzacsâ€?, to coincide with the centenary of World War 1. Some other high proďŹ le events during the festival include the 15 open gardens and chestnut groves, the Wandi Nut Festival, scenic drives and much more. More information on the festival can be found at www. brightautumnfestival.org.au.

HE Brighter Days event which has been held in Bright for the last two years on the Labor Day long weekend (March 6-8) seems to be gathering even more momentum for this year. Successful in raising approximately $200,000 over the past two years for children’s charities such as SUDS and DEBRA, Brighter Days spokesperson and Vice President Jason Reid is excited to announce a stellar line up of entertainment for this year’s event, with the likes of Russell Morris, Brian Cadd, Chocolate StarďŹ shes’ tribute to Meatloaf’s Bat Out Of Hell, Bright’s adopted band The Smokin’ O’Briens, Screaming Eagles, Nicky Bomba of John Butler Trio fame and Bustamento as well as many

local bands performing during the weekend. The other highlight is that Jeff Cox from Coxy’s Big Break will be the MC and host for the weekend. Plus he will be getting up and drumming with the likes of Cadd, Morris and The Smokin O’Briens. People who come to Bright to enjoy this weekend will also see a custom car and bike show’n’shine, a poker run, children’s entertainers over the whole weekend including clowns and other performers, and of course the drawing of the main prize on Sunday afternoon in the town centre by the clock tower; a $50,000 custom Harley Davidson and trip for two to America. %JOOFS 1MBJO T Easter tradition S

TEEPED in tradition, the Geebung Polo Match is a highlight on the calendar of many a horse lover, and a family friendly Easter tradition. The match itself is based on an Australian tradition, and is ingrained culturally by the poem “The Geebung Polo Club written by AB “Banjo Paterson. Occurring annually for the past 24 years in the Victorian Alps, the match of strength and bravery originated from a “few quiet drinks at the Dinner Plain Hotel.

A mix of wild country blokes formed the institution known as the “Geebung Polo Clubâ€? rivalling the City Slickers “Cuff N’ Collarâ€? Polo team. Who will win the survival of the ďŹ ttest, in a game twisted with competitive sportsmanship and character, this year? The event promises to be a fun day out for the whole family packed full with live music, helicopter rides and Easter egg drop, tug-o-war, food and wine stalls, fashions on the ďŹ eld, face painting, jumping castle and

much more for the entire family. Bring a picnic rug and a chair, back up the car, sit back and relax. Celebrate with your friends and family by breathing in the crisp Alpine air, take in sweeping vista views and relax in the pure high country this Easter. For more information on this event, see www.geebungpolo.com.au, or the event’s Facebook page.

RIGHT Art Gallery is once again holding its annual Autumn Art Exhibition this year. Steve McCall, gallery president and art show organiser, expects the number of paintings to be at least 900 - which makes it one of Victoria’s biggest art exhibitions. It is certainly the longest running – taking place from April 1 to May 10. “This year we have included a drawing section as well as a prize for the best local scene. “Also, there is now a major prize for the Best Work in Show, which will hopefully attract works of very high quality he says. “Artists enter this show from all over Victoria and the Riverina, with the addition of some well-known

names from the Sydney area. “We will also have a small selection of quality woodwork, jewellery and other affordable items.â€? Opening night is Wednesday, April 1 from 7pm - a fun evening with ďŹ nger food and a glass of wine for $12. This is a great chance to get an early choice from the many wonderful paintings on display, admire the prize winning works and chat to some of the artists. It is then open daily from 10.30am to 4.30pm, with admission $5 for adults, children and students free. Concession entries can be arranged for coach and other large groups. Cottage continues to attract history buffs I

NTEREST in Ned Kelly and Australian history never really goes away, according to Kate’s Cottage owner Chris Gerrett. Whatever people’s view of the infamous bushranger, they ock to Kate’s Cottage to ďŹ nd an informative gem in the shop’s large selection of books, which contains many rare and hard to ďŹ nd volumes about Ned Kelly and Australian history. Mrs Gerrett, who runs Kate’s Cottage with husband Rod, said there is always fresh interest in Ned Kelly, with books based on his history and legacy being published all the time. Kate’s Cottage has a wide variety of Ned Kelly related memorabilia and souvenirs available for purchase, including a number of helpful secondhand books. Mrs Gerrett said Kate’s Cottage staff were more than happy to discuss the Kelly legacy with visitors. Kate’s Cottage also houses a

Mrs Gerrett said that customer service was a high priority at Kate’s Cottage, and the shop and museum had been favorably reviewed many times on sites such as TripAdvisor. Kate’s Cottage is located

GLENROWAN CHARM

UST over two hours’ drive from Melbourne, and 15 minutes by car from Wangaratta, Glenrowan is perhaps most famous as the site of the famous 1880 siege and capture of Ned Kelly and his gang in 1880. The siege, which took place in late June, 1880, saw the gang take a number of hostages in the Glenrowan Inn, and ended with the death of three gang members and ultimately, the capture of Ned Kelly who was then tried, convicted of murder and hanged on November 11, 1880 at the Old Melbourne Gaol. Many attractions around the town bring together various aspects of Kelly history, or have books and other paraphernalia on the subject, making it easy for tourists and locals alike to learn more about one of the most larger than life characters in Australian history. But as well as its historical connections, Glenrowan is also well known for the variety of

food and refreshment options, historic wineries and stunning bushland surrounds. The Glenrowan wine region has a long and rich winemaking history, as 130 years of winemaking has established the region’s reputation for fullbodied reds, fragrant whites and fortiďŹ eds, and the region’s cellar doors are cosy and welcoming to wine lovers. There are also several fruit orchards and growers in the area producing various delicious fruit varieties. Nearby natural attractions include the Warby Ovens National Park, the Winton Wetlands and more, offering many options for a picturesque picnic spot, bird watching and bushwalking, as well as vantage points and lookouts including Ryan’s Lookout, Mt Glenrowan and Salisbury Falls. Whatever activity you choose, there is plenty to explore and enjoy in Glenrowan and district.

UTUMN in the High Country gets even busier than for the rest of the year – if that is at all possible. Right across the region events draw tourists to the area offering fun, excitement, family events, food, wine, cycling and music. The range of events from March through to May includes the annual Merrijig Rodeo, the inaugural Merrijig Family Fun Day, the ever-popular Picnic in the Park at Mirimbah, the World’s Longest Lunch as part of the Melbourne Food Festival, a bumper Easter Bush Market, the High Country Vintage Wine Festival (incorporating another Long Lunch), the High Country Cycle Challenge and topping off the list the Tenors on the Turf at the MansďŹ eld Race Club. And if that is not enough then try reaching the top of the world at Mt Buller with a full list of events for Easter and beyond. The annual fun run will take place giving participants choices in the distance and difďŹ culty of where and how far they run. The Mt Buller Australian Alpine Epic trail was declared open in December and has become a true tourist destination. This is the Southern

Hemisphere’s ďŹ rst and only International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Epic trail. The trail was ofďŹ cially opened by John Huber, CEO of and Cindy McLeish MP, Member for Eildon. “The Epic trail has been a huge project with a clear goal – to create world-class trail that offers an iconic, diverse and high-quality back-country ride experience and becomes the top of the bucket list of any MTB rider,â€? John Huber of Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, declared. “The trail adds to Mt Buller’s world-class IMBA-accredited mountain bike park and continues to help establish Mt Buller a premier mountain biking destination, has created a major tourism draw card for North East Victoria and supports the Australian MTB industry through the continued development of world-class infrastructure.â€? The Australian Alpine Epic is a 40km long-distance, crosscountry descending trail that winds through some of the most spectacular terrain and scenery in the Australian Alps. GROUNDSWELL of support is buoying a campaign to create a touring route along the “Old Hume Highway 31â€?, including such bypassed towns as Wangaratta, Glenrowan and Springhurst, to rival America’s famed Route 66. The campaign has been headed up by Frank Burke, who said that encouraging people to take the old highway route would have a number of beneďŹ ts for bypassed towns, from increasing tourism and money owing into the local economy, to providing more relaxing places for drivers to recover from fatigue and break up their trip. “Visitors to the Old Hume Highway have difďŹ culty ďŹ nding it, as there is no map of the Old Hume Highway over its length

available,â€? Mr Burke said. “Nor is there any standardised signage to let you know you have found it.â€? Mr Burke said that among strategies being organised are seven day bus tours along the highway with bus company Dysons, as well as a standardised map (both paper and electronic) of the entire highway. Mr Burke said residents of local towns would see the beneďŹ ts of people touring along the old highway this autumn, with a street rod “Director’s Cruiseâ€? making its way along the highway in the week leading up to Easter. Up to date information on the campaign is available on the Old Hume Highway 31 Facebook page.

Many of these trends are reected in internet trafďŹ c, with several positive trends becoming evident from December 2014. Web enquiries in December 2014 were up 21 per cent from the same time period in 2013, while email enquiries increased by 32 per cent. Ms Keith said that most impressively, online bookings were up by a whopping 135 per cent, which she said is partly due to the increased use of smartphones and other mobile devices for holiday planning and booking. “It’s really exciting – it shows massive growth for us,â€? she said. She said that the statistics showed the importance for

'PSHJOH a fresh identity E

LDORADO’S Don Stewart and Trent Cupid are forging a fresh tourism identity for the North East town. They have embraced the story of the Kelly Gang’s Joe Byrne and his childhood friend Aaron Sherritt and linked the town’s aspiration to win recognition for its connection to the Kelly story to the nearby Woolshed Valley where the pair was raised. Operating in tandem – and each with roles in the ‘El Dorado Tourism Business Group’ and highly-regarded local museum – the two are now planning the development of an interpretative centre in the blacksmith shop in the museum grounds. In it, visitors will be able to explore the story of the friends who in the 1860s grew up and in the 1870s caroused together in the valley, which runs from Eldorado up towards Beechworth through densely timbered, rugged creek country. It proved rich ground – gold was mined in ‘the Woolshed’ and when the Kelly Gang became the target of a vast police hunt late in 1878 it was the place in which sympathetic bush blacksmiths began

secretly to forge armor for the outlaws. “Eldorado used to be on the road to nowhere and now it’s not,â€? said Don – a technical college teacher who insists the town’s name should be spelled properly with its two Spanish words which translate as ‘place of opportunity’ or ‘of riches’. “We’ve established ourselves in the region in our own right and we’re being recognised as part of Tourism Victoria’s jigsaw. “The region was established because of the signiďŹ cant role that Eldorado and the Woolshed Valley played over 100 years of mining activity – and became one of Victoria’s major goldďŹ elds. “The valley had thousands of miners and businesses and there were four major towns (Woolshed Diggings, Sebastopol Flat, Napoleon’s Flat and Devil’s Elbow). “Both the tourism business group and the museum have worked to keep the story alive by creating a brochure that encourages people to tour the valley and stop and read the 10 interpretative signs along the way that identify points of interest.â€?
