AROUND THE REGION

Saddle up for the biggest bush festival yet STEP into your cowboy boots for the 2019 Man From Snowy River Bush Festival. MFSR2019 will mark 24 years since the beginning of this great festival and by all accounts is set to be the biggest festival yet. The Man From Snowy River Bush Festival is a diverse four-day festival showcasing all things Australian Bush Heritage, in direct relation to Banjo Paterson’s iconic poem. It features events and activities to suit all ages with the iconic MFSR Challenge being the main attraction, where 72 of the country’s highest calibre of riders come together to compete for the ultimate title of ‘The Man From Snowy River’. The festival recreates AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson’s Man From Snowy River poem in a live re-enactment, with

PHOTO: Jess Fleming Photography crowds watching 'in very fear' as our mountain horsemen take on the steep and winding mountains in pursuit of the colt that got away. Another huge country music line up will this year feature country music favourites Travis Collins, Jasmin Rae, Jetty Road, Gretta Ziller, Danny Phegan

and the Longreach Band, plus more. The entertainment doesn’t stop at the MFSR Live Stage though, as there are highly talented bush poets, artists, and photographers through to the dust busting action of our MFSR Rodeo, which showcases the best rough stock the country has to offer.

MFSR2019 will feature a Ute Muster, Kids party, Street Parade, Bush Markets, Aussie Bush Idol, Bushman’s Whip Crack competition, Working Cattle Dog Championships, a NEW Heritage parade, and much, much more. For more information see www. bushfestival.com.au.

Calendar packed with fun AUTUMN is event time at Cofield Wines, and the calendar ahead is full to the brim with new releases, dinners and special events. Tastes of Rutherglen over the long weekend in March is one of the major drawcards of the Rutherglen Wine Region, and Cofield Wines will be front and centre in the festivities. Early attendees to the weekend can enjoy the inaugural Bubbles, Burgers and Beers event; a casual twilight event held on the winery grounds on Friday, March 8. On March 9 and 10, they will be teaming with the Pickled Sisters to present perfectly paired dishes such as Caramelised Pork Belly with Pinot Noir and Rich Chocolate Torte with Rutherglen Muscat. Another must do activity is the Vintage Breakfast on the morning

of Sunday, March 10 - a decadent two course breakfast feast with matched wines. Easter in the North East is absolute perfection, and Cofields will be offering two jam-packed days of fun. Take in the colour and excitement of vintage, relax to live tunes on the lawns (April 20 and 21), with ample catering and of course wonderful wines and craft beer, activities for the kids and free entry for all. To round out the autumn festivities, Cofields will host their annual Autumn Dinner on April 27. Perfectly timed to celebrate the end of vintage, enjoy a seasonal feast prepared by the Pickled Sisters Cafe, paired with new release and back vintage wines, and hear firsthand the wrap on Vintage 2019.

A celebration of Italian

FEET FIRST: You are invited to join all the fun at La Fiera.

PROUDLY sponsored by Michelini Wines, La Fiera 2019 kicks off with Celebrazione Michelini, the festival launch party on Tuesday May 14 and Viva Michelini, wine and food italian style daily at Michelini Wines Cellar Door. With its glorious autumn days mixed with spectacular food, wine, art, heritage and historical displays, and the biennial Living Chess Match, Myrtleford is once again set to host the region’s premier Italian festival this May as La Fiera returns for its 11th year from May 14-19. With returning favourites and new events, this will truly be six days of fun - The Italian Way! On Saturday Myrtleford’s Piazza (does any other Australian town have an official Piazza at its centre?) will come alive with a distinct Italian village atmosphere. The festival presents the ever-

popular Food & Wine Festa with the atmosphere of an Italian village featuring the Rustica Project, comedian James Liotta, singers Dean Canan and Rick Brun all entertaining the crowd with the sounds of Italy. Alpine Valley Vigneron members will be on hand with their outstanding local wines, as will regional produce, together with mouth-watering traditional dishes from local Italian clubs. The festival continues to offer the ever-popular series of Masterclasses where you can learn from the local experts in their fields. Renowned local chef Patrizia Simone will head up her superb Masterclass, together with the popular Chestnuts Masterclass. Be sure to check the festival website for updates on these and other Masterclasses to be presented. Bookings available online.

The festival continues the tradition of cultural delights such as the Wangaratta West PS Italian Choir, Grape Stomping and Barista racing, Anthony Demasi presenting Magic Tony and Luigi Zucchini for the children, Wild Mushroom Forages, and an Italian street procession with all of its colour and pageantry following the traditional special Mass dedicated to St Anthony of Padua. This religious observance begins Saturday’s program at 9am in the Piazza and all are welcome. Special events will be on throughout the day, including the Bendigo Bank’s Family and Children’s Activities in the newly redesigned Jubilee Park, including free face painting, balloon animals, children’s activity tent, Anthony De Masi’s Magic and Comedy spots and Caroline’s free photo booth. continued page 11

will be followed by an outdoor theatre presentation (in the Piazza) of the Living Chess Match, based somewhat on the historically famous Marostica tradition. “La Fiera is proud once again to develop a program of events that will delight everyone and each year our festival grows and becomes more exciting, La Fiera spokesman John Costenaro said. “We have a wonderful range of entertainment. La Fiera is becoming the one event in the Northeast not to be missed. Myrtleford’s Italian ‘La Fiera festival celebrates Italy’s beauty and diversity through wine, music, sport, gastronomy and folklore. Share in Delatite Winery’s journey COME and visit Delatite Winery this autumn as they celebrate their 50th year. Over that time, Delatite has developed into one of Australia’s prestigious “5 Red Star Wineries” (James Halliday). They produce exceptional cool climate wines and sparklings and you are welcome to come and taste up to 25 of them at the cellar door. Of course, all wine tastes better with food - try their range of beautiful pizzas and platters, all made from local ingredients and available up until 4pm each day. Enjoy all this while taking in one of Australia’s most amazing vineyard views towards Mount Buller and the High Country. This autumn sees numerous events at the cellar door beginning

with an estate and a Reserve wine. It will be an afternoon of fun and frivolity. On Saturday, April 13, David Ritchie will take a guided walk up to Ritchies Hut.

This event sells out quite quickly each year as there are only limited places and it is just a beautiful way to spend an autumn morning. Antiques and collectables for all tastes THE Albury-Wodonga Antiques and Collectables Fair is returning again in 2019 with a host of new professional dealers as well as your old favourites. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, in conjunction with the Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair Committee and The Zonta Club of Albury-Wodonga, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. April 6-7 will see the Mirambeena Community Centre at Lavington transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the fair. Traditionally, the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest.

PRECIOUS PIECES: Come and find something unique for your home at the Albury-Wodonga Antiques and Collectables Fair. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to twenty different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collecta-

bles and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is also a fundraiser for Antiques Fair Committee and The Zonta Club

of Albury-Wodonga, who will be providing delicious light lunches as well as morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is open to the public from 10am until 5pm on Saturday, April 6 and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday, April 7. Admission is $9 for adults and includes a lucky door ticket. Accompanied children are free. There is plenty of parking available nearby and wheelchair access into the hall. Mirambeena Community Centre is situated at 19 Martha Mews Lavington (off Moore St), opposite The North Albury Swimming Pool, near the Five-ways Shopping Centre. Bright Autumn Festival announces galactic theme for Gala Parade THE Bright Autumn Festival has announced the theme for the 2019 Gala Day Parade, due to be held in the centre of Bright on Saturday, May 4. “The theme for the 2019 Bright Autumn Festival Gala Day Parade is ‘May the fourth be with you’,” says Bright Autumn Festival president Brendan Holland. “With the hundreds of characters in the Star Wars movie franchise, we want to encourage kids to dress up as their favourite character from the series for the Gala Day Parade on May the 4th.” The Gala Day Parade is the highlight of the Bright Autumn Festival, which is now entering its 57th year. The parade will run through the heart of Bright from 1:45pm, taking in the famous clock tower at Mafeking Square and terminating at Mountbatten Avenue. The launch of this year’s festival coincides a public competition to find

a photograph that best represents the heart and soul of Bright in autumn. “We thought it would be a lot of fun to engage the community to find out what autumn in Bright means to them,” says Holland. “The winner will see their photo used in printed marketing materials and across our digital properties. “The competition will run until March 10 and can be entered online through our social media platforms or by using the hashtag #BrightAutumnFestival.” The Bright Autumn Festival is a ten-day celebration of the wonderful autumn colours and autumn produce of the valleys of Victoria’s Alpine High Country, running from Friday, April 26 to Sunday, May 5. Find the festival on Instagram (@ brightautumnfestival) or Facebook (@ officialbrightautumnfestival), or see the website at www.brightautumnfestival.org.au.

Enjoy the fruits of the season at Nightingale Bros WITH the air turning crisp and cool, and the trees turning various shades of gold, autumn is the perfect time to visit the Nightingale Bros produce store in Wandiligong. New season apples have been picked and are available in store now, and all the Nightingale team say that nothing beats the crunch of an apple that’s just been picked off the tree except perhaps the taste of a warm homemade apple pie in autumn. New season chestnuts will be available instore from March 25. But Nightingale Bros sell more than just fruit – the business also now sell their own handmade apple, and apple and berry pies at the produce store as well as a range of jams and relishes. The Nightingale family has been growing crisp, juicy apples in the Wandiligong Valley and alpine surrounds for 65 years. They began from humble traditions, with Marianne (Keith’s wife) first selling apples from the garage using a little honesty box. 65 years on, three generations of the family can still be found working in the orchard.

Keith Nightingale, who bought the Wandiligong orchard with his brother Alan back in 1954, still works in the orchards and takes an interest in the business, and was even awarded the title of Industry Legend in 2013 for his contribution to the apple industry. Nightingale Bros’ beautiful produce store and range of awardwinning apple ciders are the pride of the family, and their decades of history is at the core of everything they produce. The Nightingale family have five orchards: two at Wandiligong located five kilometres from Bright; one in the Buckland Valley just below Mount Buffalo; one at Stanley; and one in Batlow in southern New South Wales. The cool, elevated conditions in these regions concentrate the flavours to produce sweet, juicy apples, and of course their range of delicious ciders and sparkling juices. Nightingale Bros offer tastings and cellar door sales of Alpine Cider and Sparkling Juice at the Wandiligong produce store year-round. For more information, see www. nightingalebros.com.au.

Bright Brewery’s “can-do” spirit BRIGHT Brewery is thrilled to announce to craft beer lovers around Australia that its MountainCrafted beer is now available in 375ml cans – for a limited time only. About 1800 litres (4800 cans) of popular Blowhard Pale Ale and Alpine XPL (Extra Pale Lager) has been canned, and was launched in February. Bright Brewery sales and marketing manager Tom Mullane-Grant said the addition of cans to the Bright Brewery range provides customers with the options they deserve. “Our customers love our beer and they love cans, so we couldn’t keep them waiting any longer,” Tom said. “This a massive leap forward for our brewery and our push to wholesale our products.” Bright Brewery founder Scott Brandon said cans were an important development for the brewery, which focuses hugely on the sus-

CHEERS: Bright Brewery have begun packaging some of their beer in cans. tainability of its operations. “Here at Bright Brewery, we’re always looking forward in terms of innovation and trends which will allow us to improve the environmental sustainability of our business. “Being lighter and more efficient to transport, and more easily recyclable, means our new cans will have a smaller environmental footprint, which is something we strive

for in everything we do,” Scott said. “This limited-run canning initiative, although only a trial, is a step towards evaluating the potential of adding a permanent canning line to the brewery.” All Bright Brewery beers will continue to be bottled in 330ml bottles while the brewery assesses the success of the cans over the next few months.

XPL is a new addition to Bright Brewery’s MountainCrafted core range of beers, replacing Alpine Ale and Bright Lager which, having been at the forefront of the MountainCrafted line up for many years, will be retired. The 4.5 per cent ABV Alpine XPL is a crisp and refreshing lager, perfect for thirsty adventurers and a fitting ode to its home town. Caring for frogs FROGS are a vital part of our ecosystem and are great indicators of the success of restoration efforts. Frogs add to biodiversity and are an important part of the food chain for birds, snakes and ďŹ sh. “One species that has been lost from our site and also regionally is the Growling Grass Frog (Litoria raniformis), and we are looking into how we can reintroduce the species back to the reserve,â€? said Dr Lisa Farnsworth, Restoration Ecologist at Winton Wetlands. In a project supported by the Wettenhall Environment Trust, Winton Wetlands staff and volunteers are embarking on an innovative plan that aims to re-establish the charismatic Growling Grass Frogs on the reserve. Key project activities include:

Quality coffee a drawcard A dedicated wholesale team, roasters and customer support staff ensure that the North East and beyond is kept caffeinated. A second café, George & Al Roy, was opened in mid 2018, offering a lighter, healthy alternative to regular fast food menus, and in late 2018, a venture into night time service on Friday and Saturdays at the Mansfield Coffee Merchant to once again offer a unique, high standard restaurant experience to Mansfield. With all this happening, the next five years will be going just as quick.

FIVE years can go by in the blink of an eye, it certainly did for Mat and Lee Picone when they moved back to Mansfield in 2014 to establish a specialty coffee, city style café in the heart of town. Opening the Mansfield Coffee Merchant in June 2014, they had expectations of delivering a high level of coffee and food to the area, with a little bit of roasting and wholesale on the side, and a nice relaxing lifestyle. Quickly becoming a staple in town due to its friendly, efficient service and delicious, constantly changing menu the “Merchant” as it is locally known, now sees tourists coming from near and far to try the offerings. Due to wholesale growth, an independent roastery and wholesale business, Merchant Coffee Roasters was established in 2017, supplying specialty coffee, equipment, training and support to over 100 clients throughout Victoria and New South Wales.

MILAWA & DISTRICT

Tourism North East launches new regional Walk campaign TOURISM North East has launched a new marketing campaign focusing on the incredible range of walking experiences available across the High Country. The campaign includes a new Walk High Country website, a one-stop-shop which showcases more than 100 must-do walks around this spectacular region, from short village strolls to multiday mountain hikes for the more adventurous. The campaign also aims to position the region as a ‘must-walk’ destination via an integrated and targeted advertising campaign focused on the Melbourne metropolitan market. A new masterbrand has been developed, which unifies the depth and breadth of the region's walk/ hike experiences, both in terms of destinations and the types of walking options available. It also aims to

promote awareness among current and potential visitors to the region. The new Walk High Country campaign follows comprehensive research commissioned by Tourism North East and conducted by Quantum Market Research into the regional walk offering undertaken at the end of 2018. The research defined the different walk tourist consumer segments, considering what motivates them to travel and spend, their current perceptions of the High Country offering and compelling walk propositions to increase propensity to travel. A host of new Walk High Country businesses have recently launched and are being promoted via the Walk High Country site. For more information on the various walking options available in the North East, see www.walkhighcountry.com.au.

How to be a happy camper MOUNTAINS, rivers, beaches, forests – Victoria has it all when it comes to camping locations. While Mother Nature provides the magnificent backdrop and Parks Victoria provides campgrounds in more than 100 parks, it’s the little bit of additional planning and care that will really take a camping holiday to the next level. Here are some tips for being a happy camper on your next holiday. Research your campground Make sure you know what to expect before you pack the tent. Campgrounds in Victoria’s vast parks and reserves vary greatly. Some are remote with no toilets or running water, while others can be easily accessed, and include showers and cooking facilities. Either way, there’s something for everyone. To get started, visit parks.vic. gov.au/explore/things-to-do. Book ahead or arrive early Once you know where you want to go, make sure you’ve checked how to secure a spot. Some campsites require a booking and some are fee-based, while many others are free and provided on a first-in, first-served basis. For bookable campsites, visit parkstay.vic.gov.au Pack the right gear You can forget the kitchen sink, but make sure you’re well-prepared. The last thing you want on holiday is to be uncomfortable, so make sure you’ve got the right bedding, clothing, footwear, food and water. Conditions

in the outdoors change dramatically so make sure your tent is waterproof. Store your food, rubbish When you head out for the day, or turn in for the night, securely pack away your food, leftovers and rubbish. You don’t want to come home after a day’s activity to find your dinner has disappeared, or your campsite is strewn with rubbish. Birds and animals can also be harmed by consuming human food. Be fire smart If sitting around an evening campfire is something you enjoy, check ahead to see if they’re permitted. Where a campfire is okay, make sure you’ve packed firewood, or can buy some from nearby. Around 10 per cent of bushfires are caused by escaped campfires so never leave one unattended, and when putting it out use water not soil. For fire safety information, visit ffm.vic. gov.au/permits-and-regulations/firerestrictions-and-regulations. Be a good neighbour Holidays can be a great time to meet new people, but remember, they’re also supposed to be relaxing. Make sure you give other campers their own space and quiet – noise travels easily through tent walls. Be a good neighbour to the environment by taking your rubbish with you, and by not trampling or cutting down any vegetation. For more information about camping, visit parkweb.vic.gov.au/ visit/popular-activities/camping.

Make steps towards a more sustainable life AS the shift toward sustainable living becomes not only desirable but essential for our future, everyday people are looking for new ways they can make changes in their lives that will make an impact. A great way to get inspired and

motivate is by connecting with sustainable communities and here in North East Victoria, there is just the place – Eldorado, Victoria, host to the amazing Off-Grid Living Festival. On Saturday, May 4 you’ll see

Eldorado’s Centennial Park transformed into an incredible space where thousands of people come together to share and learn about off-grid living. The festival will take visitors into the future, with diverse exhibitions of the latest sustainable technologies and building ideas, and back into the past, as clever craftspeople display forgotten skills, tools and ideas. For those who want to explore topics more in-depth, you can stick around and sign up for lengthier workshops and tours being offered onsite and in various regional loca-

tions on the Sunday, May 5. This is a great excuse to stay in the area for the whole weekend and really get into the theme by enjoying some off-grid camping, or soaking up the scenery in one of many beautiful country cottages dotted around the region. This is a wonderful event for the whole family with exhibits, demonstrations, talks, workshops, activities and off-grid food and entertainment. Louise Saxton reimagines linen WANGARATTA Art Gallery’s current exhibition, Louise Saxton - The Linen Project, offers art lovers a new perspective on rediscovering, reconstruction everyday linen by reimagining its use into artworks. Louise Saxton is a mixed media and assemblage artist based in Melbourne who, for the past 13 years, has worked primarily with discarded and disinherited needlework. Through a long-term commitment to materials originally made by oth-

ers and an exacting and painstaking process of reconstruction and homage, Saxton has sought to elevate once everyday and now disappearing domestic linens. The Linen Project is a new body of work, which celebrates the embroidery and lace that Saxton is known for extracting, reimagining and reconstructing, and now also brings to light the inherent beauty and humanity found in the linens, cottons and silks.

The Linen Project has been several decades in the collecting and two and a half years in the making, supported by an artist-in-residence program through St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. The Linen Project asks us to reect upon the way in which fabric has been used historically, not just to clothe and shelter us, but also in

terms of its role in caring for family and community. The Linen Project continues until March 31. To ďŹ nd out more about this fascinating exhibition, head to the Wangaratta Art Gallery in Ovens Street, Wangaratta, or to see what exhibitions the gallery has coming up, see www. wangarattaartgallery.com.au.

Harvest picnic in the vines Where Nature Awaitsc

AUTUMN is an ideal time to experience the tranquillity and beauty of the Sedona Estate Winery and Cellar Door. Since its humble beginnings in 1998, owners Sonja Herges and Paul Evans’ vision has been to produce fine cool-climate wines that are regionally distinctive and of impeccable quality. Recent national and international awards for the 2015 Yea Valley Shiraz Reserve and Yea Valley Merlot Reserve are a reflection of their dedication and passion to their land and winemaking. As a true estate, Paul and Sonja grow the fruit, make and bottle the wine onsite and offer an authentic cellar door experience at their winery in Murrindindi, just north of the Great Divide. Visit the cellar door off the beaten track, you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy a relaxed and informative tasting with the winemaker, and stay

for a delicious artisan cheese platter available on weekends and during the peak holiday season. Or you may want to join one of the many events hosted at Sedona Estate. On Sunday, May 5, the winery will open its doors to celebrate the end of vintage with delicious food, fine wine and live music. The popular Harvest Picnic will feature a 3-course banquet style lunch. Local caterer 'Harvesting the Feast' will return to prepare a scrumptious menu with the best seasonal flavours that the region has to offer. Cost for 3-course lunch is $75pp plus drinks at bar prices. Early booking is recommended. For further details, including event information and opening hours, visit www.sedonaestate.com. au or call (03) 9730 2883. Sedona Estate is located at 182 Shannons Rd, Murrindindi.
