Let‘s celebrate this summer
WELCOME BACK | 5IF TJHIU BOE TPVOET PG DJDBEBT IFSBME TVNNFS PHOTO: Belinda Harrison
AHHH .... summer The smell of someone‘s barbeque on the warm evening air, the call of cicadas from dawn till dusk, hard–fought games of cricket in the backyard, debating the strengths and weaknesses of our Aussies against the Poms in the Ashes series, yes, summer is here. It‘s been another hard year but our regions and our people are bouncing back and looking forward to catching up with friends and family from near and far. In this edition, we are celebrating with a nod to the fantastic activities, boutique stores, accommodation, food and wine venues that have made our backyard so well–known
and we encourage you to get out and visit an old favourite or a brand new spot. From tall mountains perfect for camping, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, 4 wheel driving or just enjoying the sights and sounds of nature to bustling small and larger towns teeming with art, history and entertainment, there really is something for everyone. Wine Country spreads far and wide and many events are back (finally) so get out and about with those you love and make the most of the long days with good food, fine wine, fresh produce and laughter. We deserve a happy summer.

Assisting local communities to thrive again INTO Our Hands Community Foundation is a charitable foundation who believes in the future of North East Victoria and wants to build community capacity for good, for ever. Formed in 2012 to continue the community recovery process after Australia’s worst natural disaster; the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, the foundation has provided grants and support to more than 100 community and non-profit organisations across their local government catchment areas of Alpine, Indigo, Mansfield and Wangaratta. With the 2019/20 bushfires, followed so closely by COVID-19, the closure of ski resorts and limitations on recreational activities, there was a real decline in community and sporting life during the winter
periods, causing devastation to local businesses who rely so much on tourists and families visiting their regions. Into Our Hands Community Foundation worked with these local communities and distributed relief grants to affected local towns to help rebuild the community life they are known for. Grants of up to $2500 were available for individuals and organisations for projects that helped communities recover, build resilience and thrive again with more than $30,000 worth of funding distributed overall throughout the Mansfield, Wangaratta, Indigo and Alpine regions. If you would like to support the local communities of the North East donate to Into Our Hands today via the QR code on this page.

Which part of wine country will you visit? THE North East of Victoria has numerous wine growing regions for you to explore this summer. Allan’s Flat, just out of Yackandandah, is unique; it is home to the oldest strawberry winery in Australia. With dry, semi-sweet and sweet varieties, strawberry wine can be served at room temperature or chilled and pairs well with chocolate. Beechworth boasts approximately 30 wineries in an area which covers Stanley, Beechworth and Everton with most offering cellar door tastings and/ or sales. Cool climate wine varieties including Shiraz, Chardonnay, Syrah and Vermentino call Beechworth home and almost every winery boasts beautiful outlooks and/or sloping hills. The King Valley wine region
FIT FOR A KING OR QUEEN: You can find yourself among the vineyards when you travel down back roads in the King Valley. PHOTO: Belinda Harrison stretches from Milawa and Oxley to Cheshunt in the King Valley, with 12 wineries based in the area. Varieties of Prosecco,
Pinot Grigio, Moscato, Rosato, Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo are specialties belonging to this group.
Milawa was the first official ‘gourmet region’ in Australia and has been known as the food and wine gourmet epicentre ever since. Mansfield wine district takes in Lima South, Delatite, Bonnie Doon, Lake Eildon, Barjarg, Goughs Bay and Lake Nillahcootie. These wineries specialise in cool climate wines such as Riesling, white aromatics, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon and many have won awards for their exceptional flavours and blends. Rutherglen is home to 19 wineries and the region is mostly known for its Muscat and Durif varieties. Rutherglen wine region touring maps are available to help you plan your visit to each winery and has accommodation options for traditional B&Bs, self-contained options, or one of the local caravan parks.

CHOICES: A wonderful summer drop from Cofields.
Strawberry wine is a summer favourite served at room temperature or chilled, pairing well with chocolate and is a delicious dessert wine. Cofield Wines have a fantastic array of Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Durif options to choose from,
however their Sweet Ava is perfect for a summer‘s day when chilled. Made from aromatic Frontignac fruit with colour coming from Petit Verdot it has just the slightest touch of spritz, a hint of musk and a little strawberry.

Adventures await this summer THIS summer it is time to stop talking and start doing - organise an unforgettable day out with Adventure Guides Australia right now. COVID may have cancelled your plans to do something earlier, but it gave the Adventure Guides Australia team time to review their policies, update their equipment and assemble a fantastic team to welcome locals and visitors back to the region and reconnect with nature. They have plenty of activities to choose from whether you want to try abseiling, rafting or kayaking, rock climbing, canyoning or caving. Think you are too old to enjoy such pursuits? Wash your mouth out - in October, Adventure Guides provided seniors’ abseiling sessions as part of the Alpine Shire’s activity program, so there is no excuse to be had there. Speaking of abseiling - at Mt Buffalo you can choose either the 250 metre South Wall multi-pitch abseil challenge or the 300 metre multi-pitch expedition on the North Wall of the Mount Buffalo Gorge. For kayak or rafting adventures, the Ovens and Kiewa rivers provide a range of beginner runs while for those a little more experienced (or more adventurous), there are new, challenging programs running on the King River. Delve into all that Dinner Plain has to offer
THE beds are made, the tables are set and the true High Country is bursting with life as this summer kicks into gear. Dinner Plain is expecting to welcome crowds back from all across the country to its vibrant village and spectacular backyard this season, and it’s probably time you joined them too. You might not have visited Dinner Plain before, and that’s fair enough to expect. Located an hour from Bright (just beyond Mount Hotham) it is a secluded gem that doesn’t attract the bustle of the valleys below. This is part of the charm. Dinner Plain’s quiet winding roads, end to end with uniquely designed architectural masterpieces, allows for a restful step away from the urban jungle whilst immersing yourself amongst true snow gum country. It’s a comforting home away from home, with self-contained chalets, dog friendly environment and a loaded range of quality places to eat and enjoy. The Alpine National Park surrounds the village, and is your first call for activity. The stunning Carmichael Falls is only 1km away

Summer exhibition with glass
OPENING on Saturday, December 4 is the Bright Art Gallery Summer Exhibition and there will be a real reason to celebrate with artists from the North East as well as Melbourne coming together to present an absolute showstopper. Alongside a diverse exhibition by the Alpine Artists, with paintings, photographs and three dimensional pieces, a special feature will be the glass exhibition featuring handmade glass by 10 glass artists from Melbourne entitled ‘Celebration’. The ‘Celebration’ exhibition had been scheduled for spring, but due to COVID lockdown at that time the gallery was unable to open. ‘Celebration’ is an exhibition of contemporary bespoke glass works by GASP (Glass Addicts Support Group) from Melbourne. Ten artists are participating: Judy Rodsted-Wood, Barb Jorgensen, Bob Pride, Carole Kernohan, Debbie Wennrich, Marianne Bradman, Tracy

therapy, helping to see us through these difficult times.” The exhibition is running from December 4 to 21, 2021 and January 2 to 31, 2022. From February 10 to 28, the ‘Norma Bull and the Alpine Artists’ exhibition is planned. Featured will be works by Norma Bull from the gallery’s permanent collection as well as new works from the Alpine Artists. The gallery holds 32 works by artist, etcher and art administrator Norma Bull (1906 - 1980).
The focus of this exhibition will be the newly acquired oil painting, kindly donated by Janet Holmes. It is called ‘The BRI’, and it is important part of her Wartime works. The BRI stands for The Bristol Royal Infirmary and shows the bomb damage inflicted on the hospital in 1944. Norma Bull painted it while she was acting as an official wartime artist in the Bristol area. It is a welcome addition to the Bright Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection. About 200 of her etchings and paintings of war-torn Britain were exhibited at Australia House in 1947. Norma returned to Australia after the war and for 12 months, followed Wirth’s Circus around painting circus scenes and people. She then settled in Victoria painting landscapes and seascapes. The gallery is open 10am to 4pm Thursday to Monday (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
CHILTERN

The old and the new come together in Chiltern CHILTERN became prominent following the discovery of gold in the 1850s. The Federal Standard newspaper office, Dow’s Pharmacy and Lakeview House which was the former home of renowned author Henry Handel Richardson, offer historical interest and in the courtyard of the Star Hotel and Theatre is a grapevine which was planted in 1867 and is reputed to be the largest in the world. The Chiltern Athenaeum showcases historic items from the township and tells the tales of the men and women who worked and lived around the area over the past 170 years. has a thriving antique scene where you will find a range of Victorianera furniture, china, glassware and trinkets. Artists abound in the natural
wonders of Chiltern with two art stores in town where you can browse their wares or join in a class. The area around Chiltern is the traditional lands of the Dhudhuroa people and the nearby Yeddonba Aboriginal Cultural Site, in the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park, includes artworks by original inhabitants including an ochre painting thought to represent a thylacine. The Mount Pilot Lookout offers 360-degree views of the countryside and is home to rare orchids, birdlife, secretive marsupials like the Australian Phascogale and ‘ghost mushrooms’ which glow after dark. So grab your bike, hiking gear and bargain hunting friends and make the trip to Chiltern.

It will be held on Saturday, December 11 and then the second Saturday of every month 9am to 1pm at Honeysuckle Creek Rec Reserve. After you have enjoyed the stalls at Violet Town, you can make your way to the picturesque Jubilee Park in Avenel for the twilight market which runs from 4.30pm to 8pm on December 11. Gateway to the North East Explore local history, walking and bike trails, events, markets & much more.
EUROA is the picturesque gateway to the North East and a beautiful base for you to settle in and enjoy what this region has to offer. From stunning walking trails, including a historic walking trail, to bike hire opportunities there is something for everyone. Thanks to the traffic clamouring to access the gold rush in the 1850s and the infamous Ned Kelly roaming the nearby ranges and holding up the National Bank in 1878, Euroa’s beginnings are certainly varied. The Farmers Arms Hotel (1876) now houses the Farmers Arms Museum with its collection of local memorabilia and the VC Memorial Park features bronze statues of three locals who received the Victoria Cross. Corporal Alexander Burton, Lieutenant Leslie Maygar and Lieutenant (Later Major) Frederick Tubb all hailed from the Euroa area, with Lieutenant Tubb born in Longwood. Enjoy the many local hospitality venues and accommodation whether you are after a motel room or historic building or a campsite on the banks of the Seven Creeks.
SIGNIFICANT: The mural at Violet Town by Tim Bowtell is certainly one to behold. Image courtesy of Strathbogie Shire Council. PHOTO: Bethanie Session RIDE ON: The Ride the Ranges Euroa event is set to take place again in April next year. PHOTO: Peter Ward Pack yourself a picnic complete with fresh local produce and make your way into the gorgeous Strathbogie Ranges to explore nearby townships and the natural surrounds. In the heart of the Strathbogie Tablelands you will find popular picnic and swimming spots such as Polly McQuinns weir on Seven Creeks and Gooram Falls with its picturesque waterfall and extensive rock pools. Long and short walks can be taken at Rocky Ned Lookout, Mt Separation and Mt Wombat - Mt Wombat providing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the peak. At Violet Town you will find an assortment of shops and more
places to enjoy a bite to eat. Two brilliant murals capturing the events of the fateful day and the aftermath of the Southern Aurora train crash is not to be missed. The accident occurred in Violet Town on February 7, 1969 when the Sydney to Melbourne overnight train (Southern Aurora) ploughed head-on into a Sydney-bound goods train. In 2019, on the 50th anniversary, the Southern Aurora Memorial Garden was opened. The mural, signboards and S class carriage which was part of the original train, now offers visitors a place to reflect, commemorate and learn about the tragedy. In the township of Longwood,
the local pub is an icon unto itself, having quenched the thirst of locals and visitors alike since the mid-1880s (please check for current opening hours). The large recreation area with an oval, tennis courts and camping ground will take the fancy of some while a Boer War memorial in Down Street or the gemstone museum will delight others. So whatever you want to see, make Euroa and the surrounding district your destination this weekend, this holiday season and for years to come. You will be in good company at Goorambat
THE town of Goorambat and its surrounding areas might have a population of only 300, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t fun to be had and sights to be seen. Goorambat’s humble beginnings date back to 1879 when the Post Office opened, with the railway station joining it in 1883. The Goorambat Primary School opened in 1888 (closed in 2010) which was the same year that the Mechanics Institute Hall - which is now known and in use as the Goorambat Hall - opened. One of the highlights was back in 1954 with a royal visit by Queen Elizabeth II during her Victorian tour when she visited 16 rural towns. The Queen stayed in Goorambat for the night in a specially

MILAWA & DISTRICT
No need to ‘walk about’ to find these products MILAWA has long been known as the Gourmet Region thanks to their award-winning wines and cheeses and their café and restaurant culture. But have you heard of the honey from Walkabout Apiaries? For a number of years, Walkabout Apiaries sold their candles and honey directly from the farm gate of the family property, but with COVID came the decision to make their products more widely available for new and regular customers. “During the past two years it’s been hard for everyone so we wanted to show our support for local businesses by offering a wholesale option,” owner Greg Whitehead said. “It’s good for them and good for us, and it’s a way we can all pull together to encourage visitors coming back year after year.” The range of Walkabout Apiaries honey can now be found in almost every local produce store, specialty food outlet and visitor information centre from Mansfield to Mt Beauty and Wangaratta to Albury. Their website also has honey and bee products including Whitehead’s Mead. If you enjoy craft beer and interesting wines
EXCELLENT TASTE: Walkabout Apiaries’ honey goes perfectly with local produce. PHOTO: Propel then the collection of Whitehead’s mead is for you. The flavours are influenced by the flowers their bees feed on and the range lends itself to food pairings, cocktail mixing and pure flavours ‘on the rocks’.
The mead is currently available for tasting at John Gehrig Wines in Oxley. So for a truly local offering, purchase from the Walkabout Apiaries’ range and make sure you get enough for yourself as well as your friends.

Magical Myrtleford
CLOSE to Bright, the township of Myrtleford is often quieter and makes an excellent base from which to explore the region. In the 1920s and immediately following the Second World War, large numbers of Italian migrants settled in Myrtleford and the area become a major tobacco growing centre. Many of the distinctive corrugated iron tobacco drying kilns can still be seen around the town and a replica historic log tobacco kiln (built in 1957) stands in Rotary Park with explanation boards and history. The tobacco farms have now been replaced by wine grapes, hops, walnuts, chestnuts, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, apples, kiwifruit, olives, vegetables, beef and dairy cattle. The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail
passes through Myrtleford and local produce, cellar doors and goldmining history panels make up some of the sights. Jubilee Park and Rotary Park offer excellent picnic spots as does the banks of the Ovens River. Great trout and cod fishing can be found near Rotary Park and off the bridge on Seltzers Lane in Ovens. There is a swimming area at Rotary Park however you can also swim at the Nimmo Bridge on the Ovens River and take advantage of nearby barbeque facilities at Apex Park. For boating, canoeing and jet and ski boat activities, head to Lake Buffalo 24 kilometres south of Myrtleford. There are free electric BBQ’s, playground equipment, a boat ramp and toilets but no overnight camping is permitted.

Tamworth Textiles arrive at the Wangaratta Art Gallery FIBRE FORM: Included in Tension(s) 2020 is Jane Théau, ANCA (detail), 2020, Tarlatan, silk, organza, audio visual, thread, wire. PHOTO: Miranda Heckenberg
AN event which showcases the best of contemporary textile art from across the country has arrived in Wangaratta, a city which itself has a long and prominent history of textiles, both in manufacturing and as a craft form. The Tension(s) 2020 Tamworth Textile triennial, held every three years, attracts artist participation from all states with more than 20 artists taking part in this exhibition. It has been curated by Vic McEwan, creating an important record of
the changing nature and progress of textile practice from a national perspective. Tension(s) 2020: Tamworth Textile Triennial acknowledges that the world has long been a place under various tension(s), both harmonious and dissonant. In order to bear witness to, contribute to and respond to these tensions, the triennial will focus on the future of people and place through textile as a material and human
experience as materiality. Mr McEwan said musical theory teaches us that as we change the tension a material is under, we also change its pitch. “It is through the combining of these various tensions that we are able to create a chord, a melody, a verse, a chorus,” he said. “As the curator of Tension(s) 2020, I aim to take the various tones and pitches offered by the tension(s) these artists are exploring, and attempt to
bring them together into a coherence of composition: a spatial and visual composition that is sometimes in unison, sometimes dissonant, sometimes sweet and melodic, and sometimes pure noise.” Tension(s) 2020 is touring Australia and visiting Wangaratta from November through to February 13. It is a thought-provoking experience and a must-see for those with an interest in contemporary textile practice.

THE 2021 cherry season has commenced at the Koala Cherries orchard in Yarroweyah and after an ideal spring with good flowering and pollination conditions, there is a nice crop across most orchards and varieties. The family-owned and run company packs more than 200ha of cherries at their shed in Yarck, farmed from their three growing regions of Yarck/Alexandra, Strathbogie and Cobram. An earlier start to the season had been expected during bloom, but a few weeks of cooler, wetter weather has seen a normal harvest timing return. The early cherry varieties have seen fruit splitting due to excessive rainfall, which is quite a common problem for cherry growers due to the early varieties’ particular sensitivity to rain cracking as they approach maturity. This will cause some interruption to supply through the early part of the cherry season, but good volumes should come through in December and January. The later varieties and districts were unaffected by the same rainfall and with the fine, warm weather leading into Christmas and the New Year, crops should be excellent. Summer 2021/2022 at Koala Cherries is brimming

From small things big things grow IN 1982, Franc and Marija Vodusek purchased “Rich Fields” from the Forge family and the adjoining property “Glen Loth” from the Bruce family in 1984. Both properties had not changed title since 1870 and out of homage to the origins of both properties “Rich Glen” was formed. In 1997 Franc and his son Daimien planted 36,000 olive trees and with the addition of a state-ofthe-art processing plant in 2001, the family started to make extra virgin olive oil. The processing plant enabled them to harvest and press the olives within a couple of hours thus producing one of the freshest and finest Australian first cold-pressed extra virgin olive oils (“EVOO”) in the market. After a number of years, Daimien and his wife Rosalind Vodusek - a qualified chef in her own right moved onto the property. Together they sought the same dream; to raise their family on the farm with good old-fashioned work ethics and values. When COVID hit, like many business owners, Ros and Daimien had to rethink how to run their business. An idea surfaced to pivot their business and open a quaint store in town as the locals had always been the Vodusek’s biggest supporters.
FAMILY GROWN: Franc and Marija Vodusek started Rich Glen back in 1982 and now the business has expanded to two stores in the heart of Yarrawonga. PHOTO: supplied The response was amazing and they soon found that they had outgrown their first storefront. “The little shop was an amazing restart and re-boot for us, but we knew once the country opened up we just couldn’t provide the customer service that we are known for,” Ros said. “So we have moved to a much bigger space two doors down which will allow us to provide our locals and visitors with a quality experience.” Ros’ passion for sourcing local and regional produce from farmers and producers around them sees the Rich Glen Provedore packed
full of delicious artisan dairy items, the famous Milawa bread, wood fired pizza bases, sauces and condiments, small goods and health foods. Their ‘just add cheese’ section where you can build your own platter box is becoming a favourite, as is their new chocolate and lolly wing. With the success of the Provedore Daimien and Ros have moved the skin care side of their business into the little store which has just opened and called the Rich Glen Orangerie. The Orangerie is home to the beautiful diverse range of Rich
Glen’s all-natural, skin care, baby care, natural remedies, artisan soaps, aromatherapy candles and eco-friendly home goods along with unique Australian made skin and body products. “We decided to call the quaint little store the Orangerie because we plan to build an ‘orangerie’ in the courtyard next door and we have visions of the courtyard leading into a wellness space,” Ros said. The Orangerie and Provedore are open 7 days a week in the heart of Yarrawonga so make sure you drop in this summer and pick up gifts for yourself and your loved ones.

The garden also incorporates information about indigenous plants and the species that depend on these plants for survival. Also onsite is a picnic area with barbecue facilities, ample on-site parking and a recreational vehicle dump point. The Y Water Discovery Centre is open 7 days a week, 10am to 4pm.
