Quench your thirst at the highest brewery IF you are touring the North East high country this summer, you should make a stop at Blizzard Brewing Company in Dinner Plain. Located at an altitude of 1550 metres above sea level, the brewery bills itself as Australia’s highest, and features a range of beers on tap as well as packaged beer to enjoy later on. Beer varieties available include ales, kolsch, lagers, IPA, stout and more. As well as enjoying the beer, you can also partake of local wine and snacks. Just off the Great Alpine Road, and a stone’s throw from many local cycle tracks and walking trails, the brewery is a mecca for many tourists and boasts beautiful, rugged surrounds. As well as enjoying tastings and brewery tours, visitors to Blizzard Brewing Company can purchase growlers and cans (cans being chosen for their lightness, portability and environmental friendliness). More information is available on www.blizzardbrewing.com, or drop into the brewery at 5 Cattle Pen Drive, Dinner Plain.

Showcase of WUDYHO ²OPV HELD in the picturesque Victorian township of Bright, in the heart of Australia’s Alpine region, the Adventure Travel Film Festival is not just a celebration of the world’s greatest adventure travel films from the 1930s to the present day. It’s also a weekend of inspiring speakers and authors who will motivate and enthuse you. This festival proudly promotes the hardy world of human-powered adventure travel alongside the transglobal epics achieved by people on motorbikes, horses and cars. An unmissable feast of adventure for anybody dreaming of their next trip. The festival attracts grizzled pros to first time travellers. “Any sane person attending can’t help but be inspired,” says festival director Rupert Shaw. Guests include adventurous solo traveller Jackie Hartnell, motorcyclist Heather Ellis, cyclists Alex Hotchin and Marty Gordon, wheelchair bound mountaineer and adventurer Paul Pritchard, travel writer and photographer Lee Atkinson and filmmaker Damian McDermott.
The films being screened will allow festival guests to travel vicariously on two wheels and four, by kayak, packhorse, paddleboard and even an old English doubledecker bus. There will be plenty of opportunities to meet the presenters and guests at the great restaurants and cafes around the township and at Festival HQ, right next door to the Bright Brewery. The festival takes place at various venues in Bright with the Starlight Cinema in the parkland behind the Brewery, in the heart of town, one of the best places to enjoy the films as night falls. Tickets went on sale in November and are great value at $125 for an adult weekend pass, $65 for an adult day pass or child weekend pass and $250 for a family (2 adults, 2 children U15) weekend pass. There are special discounts for seniors and film goers who have attended previous festivals. Full details can be found on the festival website at www. adventuretravelfilmfestival.com.

Mr Dowling said. “Presentation topics at the ‘Codference’ will include record stocking of the species with help from recreational ďŹ shing licence fees, the importance of habitat, ows and ďŹ shways, indigenous connections to cod, handling tips for returning them safely and the latest news on the carp virus.

Thrills and spills aplenty at Boxing Day rodeo SOME people shop and some watch cricket, but those who are in the know are in Myrtleford on Boxing Day for its annual rodeo. Now in its sixty-third year, it is one of Australia’s longest running rodeos and is hailed as one of the best with cowboys travelling from afar to compete for the coveted Golden Spurs. The rodeo has become a tradition for many local families and visitors to the North East - especially on Boxing Day when you are seeking to entertain the kids and just chill out and perhaps catch up with friends. Everything you need for the day is available, however, it is suggested you bring a chair, a jacket and perhaps a blanket for later in the evening when the weather cools and the main program begins. Located at the picturesque natural amphitheatre at the Myrtleford Showgrounds, there is plenty of room for everyone to watch the action as cowboys ride champion

CHALLENGE: Keen cyclists will enjoy tackling the 7 Peaks Ride this summer.
Tackle the 7 peaks
ROAD cyclists from around Australia and overseas are getting involved in popular alpine ascent challenge, the 2016/17 7 Peaks Ride season in Victoria’s High Country, which kicked off in October and continues through to March 31. The popular summer event challenges road cyclists to climb the seven Victorian peaks of Mt Baw Baw, Mt Buffalo, Mt Buller, Dinner Plain, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Lake Mountain. At the top of each peak conquered, riders can record their achievements with a stamp in their special 7 Peaks Passport or enter results on Strava using the official ride segments at Strava.com/Clubs/7peaksride.
This year the 7peaks.com.au site will acknowledge and celebrate the extraordinary growth in women’s road cycling with 100 Women’s Stories. 50 of these real-life stories by women who have completed one or more of Victoria’s 7 Peaks will feature on the new site, with 50 more to be added by women tackling the challenge throughout the 7 Peaks season. Cyclists tough enough to ride and register four or more peaks will be in the running for the grand prize of a European cycling holiday for two coinciding with the 2017 Tour de France with Wide Open Road Cycling Tours, and anyone completing all seven peaks will be eligible for the highly sought-after 7 Peaks jersey.
Some tracks too wet to re-open MORE than 100 forest tracks across the Hume Region were re-opened in time for the Melbourne Cup weekend in October, but a wet spring dampened the re-opening of others. Recent flooding and sustained wet weather in North East Victoria means some seasonal road closures were extended to November 30 (or until safe). “Roads and tracks are closed temporarily to protect them from damage during the wetter months each year as part of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria’s seasonal road closure program,” DELWP’s assistant chief fire officer – Hume region, Gill Metz, said. “While most of the roads and tracks closed during the wetter months were re-opened in time for the Melbourne Cup weekend, around 41 tracks will remain closed to enable them to dry out or for repairs,” Ms Metz said. For more information about road closures and changes of conditions go to http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au or check the Public Access Map at http:// www.depi.vic.gov.au/forestry-and-land-use/visiting-parks-and-forests/ visiting-state-forests/public-access-map for any prolonged closures. Alternatively, you can contact your local DELWP or Parks Victoria office. North East Tourist News - Summer 2016

Summertime fun at Gapsted Wines SUMMER is such an exciting and busy time for the team at Gapsted Wines. The winery’s events calendar is filled with a diverse array of activities that will entertain. Local music artists will perform on certain weekends and the holiday period, so head along for a lazy afternoon of great food, wine and entertainment. Check out their website for a list of artists. Summer dinners are back this year, with the cellar door open on Friday and Saturday nights for dinner from 6pm to 9pm across December and January. Take time out of your busy schedule to experience the picturesque views and the fabulous seasonal menu that is perfectly matched with Gapsted’s premium wines. Based on the success of their Long Lunch in October – where, for the second year running they had full tables and plenty of happy customers – they’ve decided to add another Long Lunch to this year’s calendar. This new event will be held on Sunday, December 18, and like Gapsted Wines’ other Long Lunches it will include a sumptuous three course summer-inspired menu matched with some of their premium wines. They also have one of their winemakers present
to explain the food and wine pairings, along with – for the first time - live music. Shakespeare in the Vines is back on Saturday February 4, 2017 featuring Much Ado About Nothing. Seated in a natural grass amphitheatre at the Gapsted Wines’ vineyard, you’ll get to stretch out and not only enjoy one of the Bard’s most popular and engaging works, but you’ll do so against the backdrop of the picturesque Ovens Valley on a sultry summer’s evening. Only 400 tickets are available, so lock in your place now. Another annual favourite is the Winemakers’ Menu, which is being held on February 25, 2017 and includes live music and a six-course degustation menu. Contact their cellar door for bookings. Make the most of the warm weather and fabulous sunsets. Gapsted is just minutes by car from Myrtleford, and it’s also on the Murray to Mountains Cycle Trail – while its large, open grassed areas makes it perfect for those travelling with children and pets. Free tastings are available at their cellar door, which is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm, while lunch is served from 12pm.

BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS: Opera in the Alps attracts large crowds every year.
Get carried away by Opera in the Alps OPERA in the Alps returns in 2017 to the serene Beechworth Golf Course beneath the gum trees on the course’s fairway. The 2017 artists include international bass baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes, international tenor Shanul Sharma and dazzling soprano Alexandra Flood. Joining them will be the 40-piece orchestra, the 100 voice choir and the talented young singers of Opera Scholars Australia to be conducted by the radio personality Guy Noble providing hilarious comedic moments with his mighty quick wit. Teddy Tahu Rhodes has rapidly established an international career on both the opera stage and concert platform. From South Pacific, The King and I, to the title
role in Opera Australia’s Don Giovanni, his talent is endless and loved by audiences. Shanul Sharma launched his singing career as a lead vocalist for heavy metal bands in Wagga (where he lived for eight years) and in 2012, Shanul relocated to Melbourne to pursue his opera career. He has subsequently been featured in numerous opera and musical productions including The Phantom of the Opera. In September 2016, Shanul relocated to Cardiff UK to complete an MA in Advanced Vocal Studies at the prestigious Wales International Academy of Voice. In 2011, Alexandra Flood was the joint Opera Scholar of the Year winner and returns to Opera
in the Alps to perform as one of their most accomplished alumna. Alexandra Flood made her professional operatic debut in 2014 as a young artist at the Salzburg Festival singing roles in Mozart’s The Abduction of Seralio. Alexandra is currently completing a Masters in Munich Germany. This large line up of artists will perform on an outdoor stage set among the shade of the gum trees of Beechworth Golf Course alongside preconcert entertainment by local musicians and the young Opera Scholars Australia. Yack mountain bike trails a labour of love network exists for all to enjoy. “As part of the upgrade, Forest Fire Management Victoria refurbished the picnic area and upgraded signage at the site.” Yack Tracks Inc member James Lacey said: “We’ve managed to build around 50 kilometres of purpose-built single track for riders with many trails featuring remnants of the region’s historic gold mining days. “As part of the project we have created four coloured loop trails which cater for riders of all abilities,” Mr Lacey said. “Most trails are rated blue and are suitable for intermediate level riders; however, the Shack Track (green) is an easy track suitable for all riders.” You can report any track damage and hazards to info@yacktracks.org.au. Summer of art in Bright BRIGHT’S popular Art Gallery is gearing up for its annual Summer Exhibition, featuring photographs, paintings, hand-crafted jewellery items, glassware, woodwork, sculpture and other small gifts. President Stephen McCall says that the exhibition was very well supported by visitors to the town last year. This year it opened on November 26 and will be on show until January 31, with a break over the Christmas/New Year period from December 20 until January 4 (the exhibition will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). “There will be an interesting range of items, with sizes and prices to suit all tastes and budgets,” Mr McCall said. “We are making a feature of paintings and photographs by artists from the surrounding area-which should ensure plenty of works of interest for those who love the beauty of the North East – a chance to purchase a unique and original memento.” Bright Art Gallery offers a range of exhibitions and activities such as workshops and Café Culture concerts throughout the year. Its Autumn Art Exhibition (held from April 4 until May13, 2017) is one of the

Australia’s toughest single day cycling event AN estimated 2000 riders will challenge themselves in the Victorian Alps on January 28, 2017 in the 31st Audax Alpine Classic. On the ‘bucket list’ of many, cyclists will travel from Melbourne, interstate and internationally to undertake this epic endurance cycling event. The toughest of the event’s ride route options is the ‘Ultimate 320’, 320 kilometres and 5000m of climbing over Mt Buffalo, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek and Tawonga Gap. The 31st Audax Alpine Classic will start and finish in Howitt Park, Bright Saturday, January 28. The event brings an estimated 6000 people to Bright including riders, their families and supporters and an economic impact of at least $1.5million. This is a not for profit event run by volunteers that raises funds for The Kids Cancer Project. Run concurrently is a free French themed festival ‘Bonjour Bright’ open to riders/supporters and the community at the start/ finishing location Howitt Park Bright on January 28-29, 2017, and more information is available at www.bonjourbright.com.au www. facebook.com/BonjourBright. You’ll even be able to try some of Rutherglen’s fun new muscat cocktails that are making appearances at a range of wineries, which will be very refreshing in the early autumn sun. Family is a huge part of Tastes of Rutherglen, and even the smallest foodie is catered for during the festival. Castle building, turtle feeding, play equipment, outdoor sports, jumping castles and more will keep the little ones busy while mum and dad enjoy a glass of Rutherglen’s famous wine. There is an extensive kids’ menu, so everyone can have a yummy gourmet experience, not just the big kids. If you have a thirst for knowledge as well as wine, then Tastes of Rutherglen is the perfect place to learn something new. Want to keep the party going into the evening? There will be festival events running on Friday and Saturday nights, such as dinners, cocktails, pop up bars and music events.
With so many exciting activities happening all weekend, it’s hard to believe that it only costs $20 to attend both days of the festival. For those that would prefer to be chauffeured rather than drive, they also have the TAC winery shuttle buses ($27 per day) and regional buses ($37 per day) which mean you don’t need the car and can enjoy the festival all day. There is even a complimentary wine check in service for bus users. Designated driver at this year’s Tastes of Rutherglen? Well, that means you get in for free. Designated drivers also get a complimentary KeepCup and free tea and coffee, all provided by the generous sponsorship of the TAC. The Winemakers of Rutherglen are very excited to welcome Australia’s enthusiastic foodies to the region to see why the North East of Victoria is celebrated for its great wine and produce.

Holmesglen wins gold at tourism awards
IT was hailed as an accolade for the local area as Holmesglen scooped the pool at the Victorian Tourism Awards in the Category of Business Event Venues. Holmesglen was praised for the foresight of executive and board of Holmesglen Institute to build a facility of such high standard and for the development and marketing of the facility by its team of dedicated staff. In their ďŹ rst year of operation as a Commercial Tourism venue they took Bronze in 2015 in the New Tourism Business category. General manager, Rozanne Lawton, who leads the team at Eildon, could not be more proud of the award
and recognition for Holmesglen and her team of staff. The awards recognise outstanding businesses and highest levels of service for visitors across the state. At the awards held on November 24 at Crown, Minister for Tourism & Major Events The Hon John Erren MP in his speech said that “Victoria leads Australia with its year round calendar of major events and business conferences, complemented by outstanding food and wine, nature and cultural experiences For Holmesglen to win the Business Event Venue category in the state speaks volumes. They will now represent the State of Victoria in the National Awards in Darwin in February.
Holmesglen at Eildon is a hidden gem in the Heart of Victoria nestled between the Yarra Ranges and Victoria’s High Country. Situated just two hours from Melbourne, this purpose built business event venue truly reects its natural surrounds of Eildon and the Goulburn Valley, catering for conferences weddings functions and events. With accommodation for 150 on site, the business also supports a sustainable ethos and “low milesâ€? food philosophy, with all catering prepared in house from their kitchen garden and orchard produce which complements their own reared beef and seasonal local produce including fresh trout, salmon, lamb and pork.

Mountain bikers to converge on Mt Buller THE GT Bike Buller Festival presented by Alpinestars brings all styles of mountain bikers together with a packed schedule of racing on Mt Buller’s internationally-recognised trails with events for cross country, downhill, gravity and pump track riders as well as for kids. With great expectations for another superb event, entries are now open for the 2017 GT Bike Buller Festival that will see three massive days of racing at Mt Buller, Victoria from March 11-13, 2017. The schedule has been consolidated for 2017 into 11 main MTB events over three days to maximise racing opportunities for riders, and provide a co-ordinated schedule that suits everyone. Over 700 riders are expected to compete at Mt Buller for the ninth edition of the event, with an even larger number of friends and family who also come to the alpine resort to spectate and enjoy the range of other, non-riding activities on offer.
The ‘Gravity Gods’ and ‘XC Whippet’ combined-races categories will return again, allowing riders to compete in three different races over the three days to award an overall weekend winner in both gravity and cross-country riding disciplines. Riders need to enter the three designated gravity events or three designated cross country events to be eligible to win the title and claim the cash and prizes. The 2017 weekend will be an incredible celebration of all things mountain biking with a broad range of races for all types of riders who can enter just one event, or a combination of them all. The three-day celebration of mountain biking will again coincide with the popular ‘Picnic in the Park’ food, wine and music festival held in the Mirimbah Park at the base of Mt Buller. Entries are now open for the 2017 GT Bike Buller Festival presented by Alpinestars at BIKEBULLER.com.

Many of the original events are still held today, such as the foot races, Dog Jump, wood chopping and the equestrian events - and these are as popular as ever. Aside from the novelty events and foot races for
adults and children, there will be plenty of country fun - with rafes, guessing competitions and entertainment for all, including Trixie the Clown, “Bash the Ratâ€?, face painting and woodworking displays, a Whipcracker, the Cross Cut Saw and Egg Toss, a Wheelbarrow race, Tug of War, Kiddies Tennis, as well as a great favourite - the “Boys Toysâ€? display. The Axeman and Equestrian programs run throughout the day; a big highlight being the Three Man Challenge Event - a race between teams consisting of an axeman, a runner and a horse and rider. There will be lots of stalls and food outlets selling
yummy wholesome country tucker, or you can bring along a picnic. The Tolmie Mechanics Institute Hall will double as the “Tearoomsâ€?, where you can take some quiet time out to relax and enjoy homemade sandwiches and cakes, and a Devonshire Tea with the best scones in the North-East. The day is capped off with a Bush Dance at the Tolmie Hall in the evening, highlighting bush band, “Jigidâ€?. Fry’s Hut restoration complete A COLLABORATIVE effort between Parks Victoria and the Victorian High Country Huts Association (VHCHA) to restore Fry’s Hut in the Howqua Hills Historic Area has now been completed. The restoration of Fry’s Hut commenced back in 2006 with countless working bees being held over the past decade with hundreds of hours contributed by volunteers to restore Fry’s Hut to its former glory. Fry’s Hut is a regionally significant hut built by a local legend and forester in the 1940s, Fred Fry, who also built many huts in the Howqua River Area. The final component involved the replacement of the hut’s roof cladding, which took two qualified roofing plumbers three very long days to repair and replace iron sheets across the entire hut’s roof. Parks Victoria senior ranger Fleur Smith said the roof had been leaking for a long time as the existing roof cladding was very old and in poor condition, with roof leaks damaging the recently replaced floor boards. “The team sourced second hand corrugated sheets of iron from a local salvage yard in Mansfield, to ensure they were ‘in keeping’ with the style of the hut. “The VHCHA and Parks Victoria have now worked

on a number of historic hut restorations and it is a delight to work on the Fry’s Hut project from start to finish”, added Mrs Smith. The VHCHA boasts proactive and enthusiastic volunteers with some travelling from as far as Melbourne and nearby Alpine towns to attend the
numerous working bees held over the years. For more details about other hut restoration projects or to get involved as a volunteer, please contact the VHCHA membership secretary on secretary@hutsvictoria.org.au or visit www. hutsvictoria.org.au.

Funding secured to grow wine industry THE Andrews Labor Government has backed Northern Victoria’s wine industry with nearly $400,000 in funding to 20 organisations to increase exports into overseas markets, boost wine tourism and grow wine businesses. Visiting Rutherglen in November, Labor Upper House member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, announced the funding, which will be sourced from the $1 million Wine Growth Fund (WGF). Ms Symes said she was very pleased to have secured the funding for Northern Victoria’s wine growers. “This Labor Government funding will allow our magnificent wineries in Northern Victoria to market themselves further to the world expanding into new markets and creating new job opportunities,” Ms Symes said. “Our region produces premium wine that is the envy of the nation – that’s why Labor is supporting the local industry to ensure the world continues to demand our products. “These projects will increase tourism to the region’s unique wineries and boost the local economy. “Victoria’s wine industry comprises 800

TOURISM North East, the High Country’s regional tourism board, has secured close to $600,000 in Victorian Government funding to support the scoping of three key projects aimed at driving positive outcomes to the local visitor economy. The projects receiving Regional Tourism Infrastructure Funding are: A $310,000 grant for the development of a North East Victoria Cycling Optimisation master plan to develop a coordinated regional approach to cycle tourism in the High Country across all three product strengths - rail trails, mountain biking and road cycling. $150,000 to research and scope the viability of developing a connected network of significant Aboriginal cultural tourism products and experiences under the banner of a Hume Aboriginal Cultural Trail. A $130,000 Ned Kelly Alive project which will explore and assess the current Ned Kelly tourism experience and develop
recommendations and concepts to revitalise and reimagine new products and experiences across the region. Tourism North East CEO, Amber Gardner, said each of the projects had the potential to act as tourism drawcards for the region. “TNE is charged with developing strategic demand and supply driven tourism initiatives across the region that have the potential to deliver significant outcomes to the local visitor economy, ” she said. “Product development projects like these are seen as key to enhancing the High Country tourism offering so that it continues to appeal to a diverse market, maximising visitation and yield opportunities for the region. “Securing this level of grant funding amongst a competitive field is a significant win for Tourism North East and the various destinations that it represents, highlighting the benefits of working collaboratively across the region.”

First staged in 1951, The Prize is named after the legendary British artist and poet William Blake (17571827) whose broad range of artistic and poetic innovations, visionary imagination and radical politics made him an outsider in his day. The Blake Prize continues to engage contemporary artists, both national and international, in conversations concerning faith, spirituality, religion, hope, humanity, social justice, belief and non-belief. The prize is also known to invite so much more, it allows the personal response to faith and what that means to the artists involved. The responses range from open and observant to the peculiar but
most of all very individual. It is famous for and has earned criticism, provoked anger and sometimes applause of critics and the public alike. Following this exhibition will be an exhibition running from January 14 until February 19 entitled The Beginnings, celebrating 30 years of the Wangaratta Art Gallery. This exhibition reflects upon the development and success of a venue which has become a highly regarded Regional Public Gallery and Significant Collection. A feature of the exhibition will be the inclusion of new acquisitions to the Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection during 2014-2016. For more information contact the gallery on (03) 57220865.

Cellar door experience at a hidden gem TUCKED away in the picturesque Yea Valley, Murrindindi’s winery Sedona Estate is one of the area’s hidden treasures. Wine lovers who visit the winery are in for a treat, as they are usually able to chat about the different wines with the owners Paul and Sonja. Sonja, whose roots go back to the famous Mosel Wine Region in Germany, said that they enjoy taking the time to answer questions and connect with the visitors to the winery. On quieter days, some lucky visitors get to go on a private winery tour with the winemaker to learn more about the art of creating premium wines. The beautiful appointed cellar door and terrace invites visitors to stay and relax with a glass of wine and the estate’s well-known gourmet platters of regional hand-made cheeses, trout, olives, sour dough bread and much
more, while they take in the stunning country views.
