WELCOME TO THE WINTER EDITION OF NORTH EAST TOURIST NEWS 2013 Table of Contents

F

ROM skiing the pristine white slopes of our resorts, to getting cosy beside an open ďŹ re in the North East’s welcoming pubs or restaurants, the region shows off its diverse attractions during winter. The weather may be cold, but there is still a wide array of festivals and events throughout the season. During the Queen’s Birthday weekend in particular, visitors and locals alike are spoiled for choice. Wine lovers ock to Rutherglen for their popular Winery Walkabout, or head across to the King Valley for their Weekend Fit For A King, or the Glenrowan area for Trails, Tastings and Tales. The weekend also sees local mountains and alpine villages, including Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Dinner Plain and Mt Buller, welcome in the ofďŹ cial start to the snow season. The snow attracts many to the region to enjoy a range of activities, including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, snowshoe walks, and après ski socialising. Textile fans will once again ock to Wangaratta for the Stitched Up Textile Festival, showcasing all manner of textile creations and underlining Wangaratta’s reputation for textiles. Visitors can also ďŹ nd out

more about Ned Kelly at the Ned Kelly Weekend in Beechworth. It’s always a good idea to drop in to your nearest visitor information centre for helpful advice on upcoming events and other opportunities to make the most of your stay, whether it is for a few days or a few weeks. Whatever the duration, we hope you enjoy your time in our beautiful part of the world. These will be held on June 29, July 20 and August 31. Visitors to either cellar doors can also sample some of the winery’s new vintage releases, including Cabernet Merlot, Durif, Riesling and Elizabeth’s Block. With winter upon us, taste and experience some of their fortiďŹ ed wines that they’ve been traditionally renowned for. Make muscat BOE NFFU XJOFNBLFST D

O you fancy blending your own muscat or learning more about wine? The access to and personal conversations with the winemakers is one of the experience highlights at the Glenrowan winemakers, with many wine enthusiasts developing relationships with the region and the winemaking families from one event to the next. Marketing manager Jennifer Booth said many visitors who attend the Queen’s Birthday long weekend celebration Trails, Tastings and Tales, love the genuine hospitality and ability to meet the winemakers so much that they come back for the popular Glenrowan Winemakers’ Weekend in October.

$03,4 "8": Trails, Tastings and Tales is once again set to be a popular event in the Glenrowan region.

“Bob’s Wine School is a one hour wine awareness session run by Bob Morrison from Morrison’s of Glenrowan. Given Bob is a former teacher, people really respond to how he shares his passion for winemaking,â€? Ms Booth said. “The Muscat Blending workshop at Auldstone Cellars is also a hands-on experience and proves very popular. “Part of our appeal is that the wineries are reasonably small, intimate and family run and that the Trails, Tastings and Tales celebration is family friendly. “We offer live music, wine workshops, barista prepared coffee and handcrafted beer as well as every winery putting on a different gourmet food offering for the three days of the long weekend.â€? The Trails, Tastings and Tales celebration is held from Saturday, June 8 through to Monday, June 10 and takes in ďŹ ve wineries – Baileys of Glenrowan, Silent Range Estate, Auldstone Cellars, Booth’s Taminick Cellars and Morrisons of Glenrowan. “To participate we offer a tasting glass for purchase at $5 which people take on the wine trail with them,â€? Ms Booth said. “They also go into the draw for a Glenrowan winemakers’ pack of premium wines when they get their card stamped at all ďŹ ve wineries over the weekend.â€? The wineries are open from 10am-5pm over the three days. There will be a ďŹ ve course degustation dinner matched with Glenrowan regional wines, held at Rinaldo’s in Wangaratta on Sunday, June 9. Tickets for the dinner are $95 per person. Book now to reserve your seat for the Trails, Tastings and Tales degustation dinner in June, by phoning Rinaldos on (03) 5721 8800.

Ms Asher said the Strategy is the ďŹ rst of its kind for Victoria and aims to grow a largely untapped niche market, while underpinning the overall priority of rider safety. “Victoria has some of the

most spectacular coastal and inland touring road routes and also hosts the nation’s two biggest motorcycle events at Phillip Island, Ms Asher said. “The Strategy will primarily target the intrastate market, essentially locals taking a weekend off to explore regional Victoria, while also focusing on interstate visitors attracted by major events. For more information visit www.tourism.vic.gov.au.

AID to be one of Victoria’s most historic areas, Beechworth’s heritage is deeply entrenched in the gold rush era and continues to live via its historical and cultural precinct in the centre of town. Established in 1852 as a direct result of the discovery of gold in Spring Creek, it is one of the few Victorian towns that have retained the character and appearance it developed by the 1880s. In the centre of Beechworth stands the town’s famous post ofďŹ ce, which has a clock that has chimed every hour since 1859. It has stood the test of time, despite alterations and additions, and survived the disastrous Camp Street ďŹ re in 1867. Perhaps one of the most popular of Beechworth’s attractions is the courthouse, where visitors can see the dock

where Ned Kelly himself stood when on trial in 1880. Meanwhile the Burke Museum, named in honor of Robert O’Hara Burke who was the town’s superintendent from 1854 to 1858, was built in 1863 and today features an array of displays about the town’s past. A more recent addition to the precinct is the Powder Magazine on Gorge Road, built in 1859 in order to store gunpowder for the use of miners. Gorge Road not only contains fascinating rock formations, but also majestic views of the town - one can see as far as the site of Ned Kelly’s lookout. Walking through the town’s streets and buildings is like being transported back to life as it was in the second half of the 19th century - Beechworth is living, breathing, creating history every day.

HE new owners at The Enchanted Forest in Bright have travelled across the country to become part of the local tourism industry. Husband and wife Stacy and Greg Kershaw moved to Bright in May 2012 after years planning a tree-change from Perth. The pair had previously holidayed in the area and Mr Kershaw said “we kind of fell in love with the place. They came on board as new owners of the shop in March this year and Mr Kershaw said although the management had changed, the shop would still

retain its diverse range of products and high level of service. The Enchanted Forest continues to stock a wide range of giftware, including greeting cards, soaps, candles and an array of ďŹ gurines, including fairies, dragons, woodland animals and more. Mr Kershaw said that additional products may be added to the store’s range in the future. The Enchanted Forest is located at 4 Barnard Street, Bright, and is open from 10am5pm Monday-Saturday, and 10am-4pm on Sunday.

EEKS after the announcement Mt Buffalo Chalet would be refurbished, the ďŹ rst work has started at the iconic building with an eye to having it completed within 12 months. This involves high priority maintenance, including the removal of asbestos, and project planning and site assessments being completed. Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla) described this as great news for

the region, as the push towards creating a day visitor centre, including regional information centre, and possibly a cafĂŠ in the original building begins. “The Alpine Shire Council and other local stakeholders have thrown their support behind the project to ensure the chalet will be opened and well positioned to attract private sector investment as opportunities arise,â€? Mr Sykes said.

At High Country Motor Inn we have 32 spacious and well-appointed units to suit your needs. From family rooms, through to the honeymoon suite: we have the accommodation to make your stay in Bright simply delightful.

“Planning is also under way to redevelop the gardens to complement the redeveloped chalet building and surrounds.â€? Once permits have been ďŹ nalised, major works to remove non-heritage structures from the site can go ahead. “By spring, it is planned that other building maintenance work will be undertaken and the regional information centre and activity centre is expected to be operating from within the

chalet in 2014, Mr Sykes said. Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith, who recently announced the government’s commitment of $7 million in the chalet, said the Department of Environment and Primary Industries was working closely with Parks Victoria, the Alpine Shire Council and other project partners to ensure work on the redevelopment is completed as a high priority.

ORKS on the Great Alpine Road will be suspended over winter, allowing the road to be opened to all without restrictions from May 31. VicRoads regional director North Eastern Victoria, Graham Freestone, said the crews ďŹ nished last vital works prior to winter setting in, including completing asphalting works

on two slip sites and getting the area ready before winter weather made roadworks impractical. “From May 31 we will lift all restrictions on the road to enable easy access to Mount Hotham for the winter season, Mr Freestone said. More information is available on the VicRoads website.

EATURING nearly $14,000 worth of prizes, and entries ooding in from all over Australia, this year’s King Valley Art Show looks set to be bigger and better than ever. The exhibition will be once again held at King Valley Cucina, with the full support of the Sartori family, after the sad loss of Barbara Sartori. “She was such an integral part of the whole show,â€? said organising committee member Chris Hazell. Organising committee members said that art show sponsors have continued with their generosity this year, with Dal Zotto Wines still putting forward the main prize, and new sponsors including Brown Brothers. Catering at the exhibition’s gala opening is being organised by local chefs together with the

parents and teachers of WhitďŹ eld Primary School, in order to raise money for the school. This year’s exhibition judge is Tasmanian born, Melbourne based artist Tom Alberts, who is highly respected in art circles. King Valley Art Show will be held on Queen’s Birthday weekend – June 8-10, with a

gala opening being held from 7.30pm on Friday, June 7 (tickets costing $25, bus service from Wangaratta available). For the remainder of the weekend, the exhibition opens from 10am-5pm daily, entry is $3. For reservations and information contact (03) 57297552 or see www.kingvalleyartshow.com.au.

For the kids, MansďŹ eld Zoo has their resident white lions and hand feeding of many other animals as you wander the grounds. New season olive oil SFBEZ GPS XJOUFS E

V Olives commenced the olive harvest during late autumn and will have really fresh Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the grove ideal for winter enjoyment. Really fresh Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a fresh, strong taste and because EV Olives do not ďŹ lter, but just settle the oils, the fresh

new season oil may contain particles of fruit pulp. EV Olives are able to offer â€œďŹ ll your own containerâ€? prices on Fruity and Robust Extra Virgin Oils - just remember to bring your empty glass or suitable containers. EV Olives now use casks for 1, 2, 4 and 10 litre quantities.

The advantage of the cask is the excellent keeping qualities offered by the packaging, not only is the oil kept in the dark, it is not contaminated by air as you decant the oil from the bladder. Try adding spark to your winter mash by adding EV Trufe infused oil, and the

ever popular stir fry oil is great for winter with its hint of chilli. Olives are great au naturel, or try heating them for a winter treat. Visitors are welcome at the grove for a tasting between 10am - 5pm any day of the week.

ILAWA Cheese Company is proud to announce the arrival to the area of Bryan King, their new head chef. Mr King hails from Sydney where he worked at places like Armstrong’s, Peats Bite and the Cruising Yacht Club before running his own catering company. Leaving the fast paced Sydney lifestyle for a more relaxed tree change here in the North East, he has found a wealth of local produce that he is busy exploring and building into the menu. Mr King is enjoying using the internationally awarded Milawa Cheese and Milawa Factory Bakery Breads he has on his doorstep in his menus. He has also been motivated to start making small batches of his own preserves that will be available in the shop. Mr King has stepped up the food offer at the Milawa Cheese Factory, while keeping a regular lunch menu comprising some old favorite dishes, like their steak sandwich and regional produce platters, he has added dishes like Milawa Tomme soufÊ which is quickly gaining a cult following. HE Wangaratta Stitched Up Festival is set to run again this winter, from July 6-14. The festival has a sensational line up of stitchy fun, including exhibitions, workshops, crafternoons, demonstrations and a fantastic market by a range of makers and creators. The festival coincides with Strictly Quilts presented by the RCoW quilters at St Bernard’s Primary School, the Threads of Faith exhibition presented by the Friends of Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award at the Wangaratta Art Gallery and much more. The Workshop Space at the Wangaratta Art Gallery will be “stitchy central and should

be the ďŹ rst stop to pick up information with what’s on around town. The Workshop Space will host the Stitched Up competition entries. The theme of the festival is ReCycle, ReUse and ReInvent and the competition criteria reects the theme and the committee is looking forward to seeing an exciting and eclectic range of entries. It will also host an historical display from Australian Country Spinners, an exhibition by Wendy Norman and craft demonstrations, and the workshop is also the place to pick up a Dress the Town map and voting sheet. Schools, kindergartens,

Scouts, playgroups and other community organisations and individuals have got out their wool, fabric, glue, needle and thread and dressed up an old chair. These will be scattered around the town and along with a little textile grafďŹ ti will give the town a cheeky, crafty feel during the depths of winter. Pick your favorite and vote –

the maker will receive a viewer’s choice prize. The Makers and Creators Day will close the festival on Sunday, July 14 at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre - this will be its third year and has proven to be a high end craft market and well worth a visit. YACKANDANDAH

Yackandandah B IJTUPSJDBM UPXO E

UROPEAN settlement in the tranquil town of Yackandandah dates back to the early 19th century. Settlement in the area ďŹ rst followed in the footsteps of Hume and Hovell after 1824, and in the late 1840s, squatters began establishing their properties and pastoral runs. The town was not immune to the gold rush, with gold being discovered in the area in 1852 and miners of many different nationalities seeking their fortunes in the area, in Yackandandah and many surrounding towns. By the late 1850s, the town had become much more established. Colonial establishments soon took the form of education, the Roads Board (1862) and Postal Services.

In 1861 the telegraph arrived, in the early 1890s the railway and the local newspaper. Reef mining came and went, and large scale mining also made its mark in the latter part of the 19th century. Today, the community remains as vibrant, diverse, and close knit as ever, and the town’s rich history is reected in its streetscape, landmarks such as its bridges and memorial gardens, and more. Yackandandah is also a vibrant retail and tourism hub, with much to see for the curious visitor. $0.& "/% 7*4*5 Yackandandah is a welcoming, tourist friendly town.

Chia and quinoa GPS HPPE IFBMUI T

HE two most popular grains that are sold at Yackandandah business Kinagrow are quinoa and chia, due to their health properties. Neither of these seeds contains gluten and they are not related to grains such as wheat, rye, oats and barley. Chenopodium quinoa (quinoa) is related to beetroot, silverbeet and spinach. Salvia hispanica (chia) is related to mint, basil, oregano and sage. Quinoa is a seed originating in Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, and chia is native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala and was a main part of the diet for the Aztecs and Mayans. Quinoa and chia have high protein content and they are considered to be complete proteins, both are good sources of dietary ďŹ bre, calcium and magnesium. Qunioa is a good source of phosphorus and iron while chia is a good source of potassium. Chia is the richest plant based source of Omega 3, dietary ďŹ bre and antioxidants. Kinagrow stocks the Australian brand of chia from the Chia Co as this company uses sustainable practices and buying Australian reduces food miles and supports the local economy. It comes in two colors - black and white - with no nutritional difference. Chia is often sprinkled over a meal, or added to bread, cereals, smoothies etc. Kinagrow currently stocks the seed but oil and bran are available. For recipes and nutritional advice checkout the Chia Co website at www.thechiaco.com.au. Kinagrow stocks quinoa as a seed and rolled akes; it is easy to cook with and requires a short cooking time.
