Whether it’s meandering along the leafy streets of beautiful Bright, or soaking up the mild and crisp autumn weather at a winery, cafÊ or even a leafy public park, this season is a great time to appreciate all that this region offers. The autumn months are also a time when the region is showcased with a diverse selection of festivals, highlighting everything from music to food, wine and produce. Some of the dazzling array of local festivals include Beechworth’s Golden Horseshoes festival, the Bright Autumn Festival, the High Country Harvest, the Mt Beauty Music Festival, and Tastes of Rutherglen. The region’s beautiful lakes, rivers, fabulous mountain walks and premier cycle rail trails also come into their own at this time of year. HE weather may be cooling down, but autumn is when the action heats up in Towong Shire. With three iconic events over the autumn break, it is the season to explore the valleys and the rivers, the lookouts and the townships of Towong and escape the rat race for a while. First out of the gates is the Towong Cup on March 8. A perennial favorite with visitors and locals alike since 1871, racegoers travel from far and wide to experience the beauty of the Towong Racecourse. This year will see the unveiling of the freshly renovated historic grandstand. Packages are available to cater to groups

and with transport available from Albury/ Wodonga, there is no reason not to spend a day at this unique race event. March 9 sees the launch of the 42nd Mighty Mitta Muster. The home of genuine country hospitality and outdoor entertainment, the Mighty Mitta Muster continues to delight visitors with world class wood chopping, petrol fuelled beauties in the Show and Shine, and a program ďŹ lled with horse events including the Stockman’s Challenge. For those who prefer a ride of a different kind, this years’ Mitta Muster will feature the Muster Tour de Mitta Valley, so why not

pack your bike and saddle up to experience the magniďŹ cent scenery of the Mitta Valley. From April 3-6, the nationally signiďŹ cant Man from Snowy River Bush Festival is the place to be. While the three day long challenge tests horsemanship, live music, street stalls, and a long list of events are sure to delight visitors. The Bush Idol competition is always hotly contested and the Bush Poetry competition makes for a fantastic afternoon’s entertainment. Family friendly and fun for all ages, the Man from Snowy River Bush Festival is the perfect way to spend an autumn weekend.

North East B EJWFSTF XJOF SFHJPO W

HATEVER your preferences when it comes to wine, you can ďŹ nd it within the diverse wine regions in North East Victoria. The Glenrowan Wine Region is best known for its bold wines, particularly red wine varieties, as well as fragrant whites and tempting fortiďŹ ed wines. In the Alpine Valleys wine region, the unique sub-alpine conditions produce elegant, fruity wines, and the microclimates nurture the growth of over 33 grape

varieties, from chardonnay to nebbiolo. The wines made in the Milawa Oxley region, ranging from large companies to small family producers, are always in high demand with wine lovers. King Valley is renowned for the Italian inuences on its wine, with the many family winemakers drawing on their Italian roots to inuence their work, and wine lovers ock to the region for crisp white wines and savory, spicy reds, and a range of Italian varieties. Over in historic Rutherglen, they are famous

for complex and unique wines, as well as intense fortiďŹ ed wines and full avored table wines. Beechworth is a relatively small wine producing region, but many appreciate their cool climate wines, including chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz. The rugged Strathbogie wine region is also a cool climate region, recognised for elegant and aromatic wines, including shiraz, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and Riesling.

ASTES of Rutherglen is a roving festival with a hop-on/ hop-off shuttle that encourages you to map out your own weekend. Music, food, wine and authentic, rustic fun seamlessly blend. This year, more activities have been added as an option for redeeming your tickets. Now you can choose between entrĂŠe sized plates and a glass of wine, or something interactive such as a Wine Master Class and a glass of wine. Helicopter transport will be available for hire between wineries, a great way to get an overview of the region. Book a trip and then hop back on the shuttles to get on with your experience. Winemakers of Rutherglen chairman, Damien CoďŹ eld, states that over both weekends, a range of events will take place at wineries including themed

Small winery has big impact E

SCAPE to John Gehrig Wines’cellar doors in Oxley and Gooramadda this autumn to sample the best of what the local winery has to offer. John Gehrig, a fourth generation vigneron, established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976; only minutes from the Milawa Gourmet Region. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the ďŹ fth winemaking generation of Gehrigs to craft some ďŹ ne wines. Armed with a wine science degree, international winemaking experiences in Alsace, Burgundy and Israel, Ross’s obsession is producing the best grapes to produce wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic North East Victorian winery. In 2011, the allure of returning back into John’s

original birthplace – Rutherglen - was too strong, thus Ross with wife Meghan, have expanded to a new vineyard and cellar door site in Gooramadda (east Rutherglen). John Gehrig Wines will be involved in several food and wine events in the region this autumn. From Saturday, March 8/9 and 15/16 the historic cellar door in Rutherglen will be involved in the long established“Taste of Rutherglenâ€?. So why not come cruise the Mediterranean Mile and taste their South of France ďŹ sh and chips matched with their 2012 Riesling. On Friday, March 14 they will be present at the water to wine pop up party at the Goods Shed Wodonga as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, then the following day Saturday, March

They live it, drink it, love it W

ITH CoďŹ eld Wines bustling with action, winemaker and owner Damien CoďŹ eld has commented that autumn is an exciting time for the wineries of Rutherglen. “We patiently await our grapes to come in after months of hoping the weather gods are kind and lead to perfect growing conditions. “It’s all looking good so far, with great

colors in our red grapes, and our white grapes are vibrant with excellent acid retention. With vintage in full swing, Damien recommends that now is the perfect time to see the heart of the winery. “Every Thursday at 2pm, we are conducting winery tours, he said. “Book in for a free learning experience

of how we make our renowned sparkling wines and see ďŹ rst hand how our new 2014 vintage grapes are made into wines. “We also have some great events coming up with vineyard tours and master classes, with a fabulous food and wine experience thrown in.â€? As part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival is CoďŹ eld’s newest event ‘A Lunch on the Land’ on Saturday, March 15, showing a real insight into vintage at the winery. Damien CoďŹ eld and his brother Andrew, the vineyard manager, will guide visitors through the Quartz Vein Vineyard, encouraging sampling of new vintage grapes and explaining how they grow grapes to produce great wines. Guests can then relax and enjoy a three course feast created by The Pickled Sisters Cafe and matched with CoďŹ eld wines, while overlooking the vineyard. Not only is March a busy month for vintage, it is also the start of the event calendar with the Tastes of Rutherglen festival on across local wineries in the area.

Play old-fashioned games such as tug-o-war or join in the pie-eating and dough-toss competitions. Learn how to bake and decorate with the experts led by Tom O’Toole, the man who started it all in 1984. Home bakers can try their hand at cupcake and shortbread decorating. It’s not a proper carnival without the ‘bearded lady’ and ‘strongman’, who will be joined by an array of other carnival characters in the talent line up. Learn what’s ahead in life with a visit to the ‘Fortune Teller’ tent or take a nostalgic stroll back in time at the history display upstairs, chronicling the bakery’s 30 year journey. All activities and entertainment will be free to the public. Other carnival highlights include: donut making and fairy oss stall;

ULTURE and history form many of the highlights in the Benalla events calendar during the autumn months. Benalla Art Gallery will be hosting entries in their inaugural Benalla Nude prize exhibition, with the winner to be announced on April 10. The winning entry and other shortlisted works will be exhibited from April 11–June 27 at the gallery. Cinemagoers at Benalla Performing Arts and Convention Centre (BPACC) can enjoy their recently upgraded digital cinema projection, as well as a variety of entertaining performances as part of their 2014 theatre season. Those looking to learn more about Benalla’s history can ďŹ nd out more at the Benalla Migrants Exhibition, being held on the last Sunday in March, April and June at the BARC

Entry is $2 per person, children free, and entry to the hut is gained by driving into the Gliding Club entrance and following the road past the Benalla Aviation Museum. Other events during autumn include the V8 Supercars at Winton Motor Raceway from April 4-6; a Harvest Festival dinner at Benalla Art Gallery on May 17; the Benalla and District Classic Car and Motorbike Rally on May 23; and Historic Winton on May 24-25. HE Geebung Polo Match is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014 making it an essential on everyone’s event calendar. Based on the famous Banjo Paterson poem ‘The Geebung Polo Club’ and hosted in Victoria’s beautiful countryside, this event proves to be an Easter favorite year after year. The beautiful setting of Dinner Plain makes this polo match unique and raw, stripping back the glitz and glam that the city equestrian world now projects. This Easter showdown stems straight out of Paterson’s poem highlighting the City vs Country competition and accentuating the true spirit of Australian culture. The match will be held on April 20, with gates opening at 10am at the Cobungra Station, 20km from Dinner Plain and Omeo. There will be a bus service available from Dinner Plain and Omeo. NTEREST in Ned Kelly and Australian history never really goes away, according to Kate’s Cottage owner Chris Gerrett. The museum at the cottage saw record takings over the summer school holidays, and Mrs Gerrett said that now more than ever, parents want to share Australian history with their children. Kate’s Cottage, and Glenrowan itself, is also a magnet for history buffs, some even travelling from interstate after reading books on Ned Kelly, and wanting to see the countryside where bushrangers once roamed.

*/'03."5*7& Kate’s Cottage has a large range of Ned Kelly related books.

Mrs Gerrett, who runs Kate’s Cottage with husband Rod, said there is always fresh interest in Ned Kelly, with books based on his history and legacy being published all the time. Kate’s Cottage has a wide variety of Ned Kelly related memorabilia and souvenirs available for purchase, including a number of helpful secondhand books on the subject. Mrs Gerrett said Kate’s Cottage staff

ARLY seasonal frosts and scorching heat over the past two months have lessened fruit yields across the King Valley. But the fruit quality at Sam Miranda Winery has been showing strong signs 2014 is going to be one of the better vintages. There have been 13 days over 40 degrees Celsius this year, but third generation vigneron Sam Miranda believes the dry climate will be perfect for the growing of the Italian red varieties like Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Nebbiolo. He bases this prediction on the most recent result of the dry climate 2013 vintage, which saw a stand out Merlot, and also a high quality Sangiovese in barrels ready to be bottled mid-year. Frosts wiped out his corner block of vines bordering the Snow Road last October, and although yields overall will be markedly down, the quality is noticeably higher. After the frosts, came a cool November and start to December, which Mr Miranda said really set up the vines, allowing the fruit to cope with the hot temperatures seen lately.

Harvesting and the processing of the whites have been beginning in the dead of night to beat the heat this year. The sparkling base white varieties Pinot noir and Chardonnay are currently being picked and harvest each day starts just before midnight to keep the fruit cool. Mr Miranda said through the Oxley winery they harvest about 1500-2500 tonnes of fruit each year, part of a total 10,000 to 15,000 tonne crush across the King Valley. “The crops are down because it has been so dry and the heat knocks the quantity around but the quality has been fantastic,â€? Mr Miranda said. “The valley has escaped the worst of the heat and at the moment we’re seeing a good balance in the avors. “It is all about kilograms per vine and the less fruit there is, the more goodies go into the fruit you have. “We are looking at 2-3kg per vine and about four tonnes to the acre.â€? The dry whites such as sauvignon blanc were picked in late February and the reds will begin in March.

HILE Christmas time on the Murray is spent enjoying the water and all the river has to offer, it’s not only leisure seekers that are out along the banks. Walkabout Apiaries were busy checking in on their beehives, in the shade tall Red Gum trees, where their bees quietly collect and store this magniďŹ cent example of what is one of their most highly regarded honeys.

Now with the Christmas Red Gum owering ďŹ nished and the best of the honey bottled you can come and try it for yourself at the Walkabout Apiaries honey shed. Any Walkabout Apiaries honey works a treat with this super delicious honey cake, but the Walkabout team prefer the red gum for full avor. Serve warm or cold with lashings of cream.

HONEY WHOLEMEAL CAKE Ingredients: 350gm unsalted butter, softened 265gm unreďŹ ned caster sugar 4 medium eggs 150gm ground almonds 150gm wholemeal self-raising our 1 tsp baking powder 50gm aked almonds 3-4 tbsp runny honey Method: Preheat the oven to 160C. Grease a 24cm diameter, springform cake tin with a little of the butter and line the base with baking parchment.

Put the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl, and cream them together until light and uffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Fold in the ground almonds, then sift in the our and baking powder and gently fold these in, too. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin, scatter the aked almonds over the top, and bake for 45 minutes, or until a knife pushed into the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and, while it’s still hot, evenly drizzle all over with honey. Place the tin on a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or cold.

Walkabout Apiaries are a 3rd generation family owned beekeeping business. Our bees collect nectar from the blossoming eucalypts of the High Country and the river plains of the Ovens, Murray and King Rivers. We take as much care in handling our honey as we do looking after our bees.

Appealing FYIJCJUJPOT T

HE diverse variety of art at Wangaratta Art Gallery continues throughout autumn, with exhibitions set to appeal to a wide array of art lovers. The contrast between city and country, urban and natural, organic and geometric is explored through Anthea Kemp’s exhibition Familiar Environments, taking place at the gallery between March 11 - April 23. A long time resident of the Warby Range before moving to Melbourne, Ms Kemp has focused on her reaction to the urban environment in which she now lives. Between April 12 and May 11, several artists from North East Victoria will present an exhibition of 3D sculpture, featuring an array of materials and approaches to sculptural form and content. Sculpture is also a focus of The Gathering II: A survey exhibition

of Australian sculpture, being held at the gallery between March 8 – May 11. The exhibition presents sculptures by some of Australia’s leading artists, including work by Jan King, Robert Klippel, Norma Redpath, John Meade and many more, and comprises late modernist and contemporary works. A retrospective of the past decade of the Wangaratta Art Gallery collection will be held from May 24-June 8, entitled 10. This exhibition will have a focus on recent acquisitions and looks back on the last decade of the collection, which, supported by council, has seen the gallery develop an enviable collection. Finally, March 8-April 6 will see the exhibition Mark Stoner: The Shape of Land at the gallery. This exhibition explores themes relating to landscape and our perception of it.
