PROVIDENCE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
2024/2025 SEASON PROGRAM BOOK
2024/2025 SEASON PROGRAM BOOK
Welcome to the Providence Performing Arts Center’s 2024/2025 season! Thanks to the unwavering support of our loyal patrons, along with generous donors, underwriters and sponsors, PPAC proudly continues to offer an exciting array of Community Outreach and Engagement initiatives. These programs provide free or lowcost access to the magical world of live theatre for those who might otherwise be unable to experience it.
ARTS Showcase brings elementary and middle school students to PPAC to attend live performances of dance, music or theatre during regular school hours and provides the same programming virtually in their classrooms. Experience PPAC provides every Rhode Island 10th grader with the opportunity to see a select touring Broadway performance live on our stage. These programs are free to schools with transportation costs fully reimbursed. Last season, these initiatives enriched the educational journeys of over 40,000 Rhode Island students, creating memories that extend far beyond the classroom. A heartfelt thank you to Textron Charitable Trust for 24 years of continuous support of PPAC’s ARTS Scholarships. This year, 77 promising young artists were awarded scholarships, bringing the total to over 800 Rhode Island students who have been empowered to pursue their artistic dreams through summer arts education opportunities.
In partnership with The Autism Project, PPAC’s Sensory-Friendly Performances creates a guest experience that is welcoming, judgment free and inclusive of guests with a wide range of sensory, learning and physical differences. These performances are perfect for young children and guests who might benefit from a more relaxed theatre environment.
With support from Disney, PPAC has helped build sustainable musical theatre programs in under-resourced elementary schools in Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls, Warwick and Cumberland through their Disney Musicals in Schools program. The season concludes with students performing a Student Share Event on PPAC’s stage.
The Ocean State Star Awards celebrates the achievement of students, teachers and designers involved in high school musical theatre programs. This showcase recognizes outstanding productions and students, with one female and one male lead performer from Rhode Island selected to compete at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (also known as the Jimmy Awards®) in New York City.
PPAC’s Seats for Service Members program hosted Rhode Island service members and their families to see a variety of shows. Additionally, Big Dreams Begin With Broadway program welcomed “bigs” (mentors) and “littles” (children) from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island to experience live theatre.
Next Stop BROADWAY® is a week-long summer musical theatre intensive that transports youth aged 10-17 to the Golden Age of Broadway. Due to overwhelming demand, this program is now two sessions in back-to-back weeks. In partnership with The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, PPAC offers financial aid to ensure access to the transformative power of theatre. FIRSTFED also sponsors From Books to Broadway, a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools designed to expose students to the magic of Broadway performances with a chance to “meet and greet” cast members.
Enjoy our virtual Wurlitzer Concerts produced by House Organist Peter Edwin Krasinski anytime at ppacri.org/wurlitzer. The upcoming calendar promises unique experiences featuring the enchanting sounds of the Wurlitzer.
PPAC is thrilled to launch a leadership opportunity for 10th grade students and above in our new Teen Ambassador Program. Each month, Teen Ambassadors will explore different career tracks in arts management and gain firsthand knowledge from industry professionals.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for being a vital part of our community and helping us spread the joy of live theatre. Your attendance and support are essential to PPAC and keeps our community thriving. Please visit our website at ppacri.org/outreach for more information.
I look forward to sharing with you another exciting season at PPAC!

The Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) has been at the heart of the arts community in Providence, Rhode Island, for 47 seasons. We are pleased to present touring Broadway productions and some of the most well-known comedians and musicians, and since 2008, we have launched 24 national tours; these include the national tour launch of A BEAUTIFUL NOISE: THE NEIL DIAMOND MUSICAL and the national tour launch of SHUCKED in our 2024/2025 Broadway Season.
PPAC has consistently been listed as one of the top ten entertainment venues of its size (3,100 seating capacity) in the U.S. by Pollstar, Billboard Magazine and VenuesNow. For us to truly appreciate where we are in the present moment, it is important for us to highlight our Theatre history; it has allowed us to become the acclaimed Theatre that we are today. Through all the challenges, we have never forgotten our true purpose, which is to welcome all visitors to the City of Providence and create a memorable experience for every individual that walks through our doors.
We were originally a movie palace called the Loew’s State Theatre when we opened our doors on October 6, 1928. The ornate venue was designed by architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, who were well known in the early 20th century for their designs of movie palaces and theatres.
For about 25 years, business was grand for Loew’s; going to see a movie at Loew’s was an “experience”! Attendance began to decline in the early 1950s due to television's growing popularity. The building sustained damage from Hurricane Carol in 1954, resulting in the removal of the Theatre’s original Morton pipe organ.
In 1972, the venue was called the Palace Concert Theatre, where it mainly presented rock concerts; unfortunately, the Theatre continued to fall into disrepair and to lose revenue. In 1976, through the efforts of Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario (one of the many champions of the Loew’s Theatre Building), the building re-opened as the Ocean State Theatre, where it returned to its historic movie palace roots. The Ocean State Theatre experienced limited success, and as a result, the building’s owner, B.A. Dario, considered demolishing the historic theatre. Due to this consideration, Governor J. Joseph Garrahy, then Chairman of PPAC’s Board of Trustees Bruce Sundlun (Governor of Rhode Island, 1991-1995), then Providence Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr. and Mrs. Dario discussed transforming the Theatre into an arts center.
In 1977, the Loew’s Theatre Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1978, the Theatre was purchased and saved by seven founding members: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank and Textron, Inc. The venue became a private nonprofit corporation and was called the Ocean State Performing Arts Center.
The Ocean State Performing Arts Center changed its name to the Providence Performing Arts Center in 1982 in honor of the dedication that the City and its staunch supporters gave to saving the Theatre. The same year, our first House Organist Lincoln W.N. Pratt assisted the staff with finding our “Mighty Wurlitzer.” The 5/11 Wurlitzer Organ was built in 1927. This is one of only three five-manual keyboard consoles built by Wurlitzer. Mr. Pratt served as our House Organist until his passing in 1998. Peter Edwin Krasinski became our second House Organist in September of 2020.
As the Providence Performing Arts Center, the Theatre has evolved and thrived through the efforts of past and current board members and administrative staff, making it one of the most successful, not-for-profit theatres in the United States today.
As an organization, we have preserved the integrity of our building by prioritizing historical restoration projects; these include the expansion of our stage house (backstage) in 1995 and the renovation of the historical Grand Lobby, Arcade, and House. The original Box Office kiosk was restored in April 2022; cracked granite stone panels were replaced with new black stone panels. During the winter of 2020/2021, custom terra cotta façade tiles were installed by Consigli Construction and exterior lighting designed by Evelyn Audet Lighting Design, LLC
was added to the front of the building on Weybosset Street; this project was honored with a Rhody Award in 2021 by Preserve RI and the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission (RIHPHC). Our marquee has undergone a two-phased restoration process.
We are also committed to providing students in grades K – 12 with programs where they engage with the performing arts. We offer eleven community outreach and engagement programs for students; our longest running programs include From Books to Broadway, High School Greeter Program and ARTS Scholarships. For ARTS Scholarships, contact Ricky Gresh at rgresh@ppacri.org
From Books to Broadway serves middle school and high school students and their educators in selected communities in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. These students are able to attend live Broadway performances, with tickets generously underwritten by the Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation. Educators incorporate the performance they have seen into their curriculum through a show-provided study guide. If you are interested in learning more about this program, email Paul Hiatt at phiatt@ppacri.org
Any student aged 15 -18 is welcome to join our volunteer High School Greeter Program Students volunteer at Taco and The White Family Foundation Broadway Series performances; they welcome patrons to the Theatre before a show begins, and they also answer questions that patrons may have. Greeters usually have the chance to watch the performance, too! Community service hours can be earned through this program; to learn more about our Greeter program, please email Betty Benedetti at bbenedetti@ppacri.org.
Do you want to see your name in this program book next season and earn other valuable benefits?
For more information about our Community Outreach and Engagement and Annual Fund donor levels and benefits, visit ppacri.org/donate or contact the Development Office at donors@ppacri.org or 401.421.2997.
The Providence Performing Arts Center dedicates 100% of its proceeds from the Annual Fund Campaign towards our Community Outreach and Engagement Initiative. This allows PPAC to create, produce and present programs and activities that make the Theatre accessible to a wider range of people, especially young audiences and artists. Our free or low-cost tickets to these events are often the only opportunity many people will have to experience the joy of theatre. It is only with the help of our donors that we are able to offer these valuable theatre experiences to the entire community:
These programs are funded by the PPAC Endowment, Gala Celebration, and the Annual Fund:
Each year, Providence Performing Arts Center is faced with the challenge of raising enough funds to offset the cost of producing and presenting the valuable programs we offer as part of our Community Outreach Initiative. The Annual Fund is the vehicle that makes that possible. Annual Fund proceeds also help fund the development of new programs that specifically serve the needs of artists and audiences of demographic, ethnic, cultural, social and professional diversity.
A special THANK YOU goes to our Community Outreach Program underwriters who have made significant Annual Fund contributions designated to one or more specific outreach initiatives.

Providence, Rhode Island was founded on the notion that you should be able to do what you want to do and think what you want to think. We take that to heart. Bring your family or travel solo. Indulge in delicious meals or bike through scenic cityscapes. Spend the day exploring a world-famous museum or relax in a gondola watching the world glide by. We have so much to do, see, eat, play, create, watch — the combinations are endless. It’s up to you.

THE VANISHING ELEPHANT March 15, 2025 at 2P | Tickets on sale beginning Dec. 6, 2024. This incredible story of resilience and friendship, inspired by true events, comes to life through large-scale puppetry, illusion and magic. THE VANISHING ELEPHANT features stunning puppets designed by Helen Foan, including a baby elephant, a young adult elephant, and a fully grown elephant, as well as a tiger.
Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS) builds sustainable musical theatre programs in under-resourced public elementary schools by providing free performance materials and free professional development to selected Title 1 elementary schools annually.

Experience PPAC is one of PPAC’s flagship education initiatives which ensures that every 10th grade student in Rhode Island can attend a select Broadway performance with their school at no cost, with busing reimbursed for school groups of 20 or more.
For our lineup of performances or to sign up to bring your 10th grade class, please visit: ppacri.org/outreach/experience-ppac
The Ocean State Star Awards recognizes, honors and celebrates excellence in all aspects of musical theatre performance and production among area high schools.
All schools in Rhode Island are eligible to participate, as well as Massachusetts schools within a 25-mile radius of PPAC. We encourage Title 1 schools to participate; financial assistance is available for their participation fee, should they need it.
Musicals of participating schools are reviewed by a panel of industry professionals. They each receive critical constructive written feedback following their production. Based on tabulations, productions and individuals receive awards in specific categories at a ceremony that is held each year at PPAC in the late spring. Our panel of judges select one male and one female Ocean State Star Awards winner to represent the state of Rhode Island in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards competition, The Jimmy Awards®, held in New York City at the end of June.

PPAC's ARTS Showcase brings Rhode Island school age students in grades K-8 to PPAC at no cost to see world class performances that connect to curriculum and social/emotional development.
The ARTS Showcase offers both live and virtual performances beginning in November and running through May. Schools can register for a maximum of one live performance and unlimited virtual performances.
These performances are FREE for Rhode Island schools to attend; the cost of busing is reimbursed for school groups of 20 or more. Massachusetts schools within a 25-mile radius of PPAC are welcome to register for our virtual performances.
We are thrilled to launch our NEW Teen Ambassador Program for the 2024/2025 season. This education, outreach & engagement program will be a vital leadership opportunity within our arts education programming for high school students. Each month, Teen Ambassadors will be exposed to a different career track in the arts management industry and get firsthand knowledge from industry professionals.
A Teen Ambassador is a 10th, 11th or 12th grade student who wants to explore various non-performance careers in theatre. Applicants must be a student in Rhode Island or within a 25mile radius of PPAC in Massachusetts. Teen Ambassadors must be enrolled in high school for the entire school year, maintain at least a B (3.0) average unweighted and have a stellar recommendation.
The Reignite Professional Development Series is a free resource for Rhode Island educators to continue their certification towards their professional learning units. This series was funded by Disney and serves teachers who serve students in the performing or technical theatre arts. It can also be used by teachers who may be tasked with putting on a musical theatre production in their school. The series is geared towards schools with little to no resources. It was developed to serve our Disney Musicals in Schools elementary teachers but is appropriate for any grade level teacher.
For more information, visit: ppacri.org/outreach/reignite-professional-development-series
USO New England RI service members and their families attended a performance, thanks to the Seats for Service Members program. They were hosted by RI Commodores - Flag Secretary David DePetrillo and his wife Jean (center back row, blue blazer with glasses). Photo: Core Photographic
Jon Duffy, Admiral of the Rhode Island Commodores, led a delegation to personally thank military families for their service. “We’re thrilled to once again join PPAC as a sponsor of the Seats for Service Members program. It is a great way of showing our support and gratitude for our military and their families.”
In the spring of 2008, PPAC initiated a pilot Seats for Service Members program to provide preferred orchestra seats to members of Rhode Island’s National Guard and their families for various performances in our Taco and The White Family Foundation Broadway Series and Encore Series
The program was met with such resounding success that we were able to raise enough money to continue it again for the sixteenth season in a row! We only hope that the Seats for Service Members program will let the thousands of men and women, who unselfishly dedicate themselves to protecting our country, know how much we greatly appreciate their outstanding sacrifices and courageous efforts.
If you are interested in sponsoring this program, please contact Claudia Zompa, Director of Development, at 401.574.3122 or email czompa@ppacri.org
