ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS
Since 1996, PPAC’s ARTS Scholarships program has opened doorways to the arts for Rhode Island students in grades 6 to 8 by providing financial assistance to enroll in summer education programs spanning the breadth of artistic pursuits. By providing opportunity when many students’ interests and capacities are rapidly evolving and coalescing, the ARTS Scholarships program provides critical access to the cultivation of creative thinking, confidence and selfawareness unique to artistic endeavors. Since the program’s inception, PPAC has granted over $325,000 in scholarships to over 700 students and counting!
Parent observation: Arts Scholarships are a shining example of how a cultural institution can catalyze positive change and foster the next generation of artistic visionaries. Bravo to PPAC for not just hosting performances but for actively nurturing and investing in the artists who will shape the future of our cultural heritage. This scholarship is a true embodiment of the transformative power of the arts.
ARTS SHOWCASE
Each year, the ARTS Showcase enables over 30,000 elementary and middle school students to attend PPAC during regular school hours or virtually experience the joy and creativity of live theater. Performed on the PPAC stage by local professional performing arts groups and nationally acclaimed touring theater artists, the ARTS Showcase is designed to entertain, educate and inspire student audiences in new ways. Since the program’s inception in 1998, more than 264,000 Rhode Island students have attended and enjoyed underwritten live performances at PPAC! ARTS Showcase performances are being presented both live to an audience and pre-recorded at PPAC and virtually distributed at no cost to all registered Rhode Island students grades K-8 with busing reimbursed, thus expanding the number of students who are able to participate.
Teacher comment: Experiencing live theater through the ARTS Showcase program can ignite students’ imagination and creativity, inspiring them to explore their own artistic talents and express themselves in new ways.
Student reaction: ARTS Showcase is super cool. We get to go to PPAC and watch real actors do amazing stuff on stage. It’s not like reading from a book or listening to a teacher talk. It’s like being in a whole new world!
DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS
In 2019, PPAC was selected as an affiliate organization for Disney Musicals in Schools which creates sustainable musical theater programs in under-resourced elementary schools. This season, we are working with schools in Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls. They are provided with free performance materials, professional development and in-school support from professional PPAC teaching artists to produce a 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school. Disney Musicals in Schools culminates with students performing at a Student Share Celebration on PPAC’s stage in June.
Teacher feedback: I am thrilled to share my overwhelmingly positive experience with the Disney Musicals in Schools. Witnessing young talents embrace the stage with enthusiasm and creativity was truly a heartwarming spectacle. The program not only introduces students to the world of musical theater but also provides a platform for them to shine, fostering confidence, teamwork and a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts. The inclusivity and accessibility of the program deserve applause.
EXPERIENCE PPAC
Experience PPAC creates the opportunity for every 10th grade student in Rhode Island to see a select touring Broadway performance at no cost including transportation, making participation accessible to every student. Show study guides are provided to schools prior to their specified performance so that they can engage in the educational material and creative concepts prior to attending. Working in close partnership with each school district, Experience PPAC supports the core curriculum work that teachers and students are doing in the classroom, bringing it to life through this experiential learning opportunity.
Teacher thank you: Thank you for all of your efforts, kindness and generosity in gifting Westerly High School with the opportunity to see the play, To Kill a Mockingbird. It is a powerful work and we only hope that all students walked away with a firm understanding of the atrocities of racism and lack of understanding/ acceptance of people considered “different” (Boo). Thank you for your constant support and outreach, and of course organizing the buses, which were luxury for sure. We cannot thank you enough!
FROM BOOKS TO BROADWAY
From Books to Broadway exposes middle and high school students to the Theatre by providing underwritten tickets to Broadway shows combined with a cast member “meet and greet.” The program brings Broadway show information into the schools in a way that emphasizes the show’s educational aspects as well as information about production values, costumes and other theater topics. Visiting cast members discuss their education, experience and how they entered touring theatricals; in some cases, the cast members may even demonstrate some of their skills.
Student appreciation: Attending From Books to Broadway was an exhilarating experience! As a student, being able to witness a live Broadway performances is a dream come true. It’s not every day we get the chance to see such high-quality productions up close. The energy in the theater was palpable and I found myself completely immersed in the magic of the stage.
PPAC HIGH SCHOOL GREETERS
The PPAC Greeter program is the theatre’s longestrunning community outreach program. High school students, aged 15 – 18, welcome patrons and answer questions during Broadway performances. Adult Greeter Coordinators, who also volunteer their time, oversee the greeters on performance nights. This program provides a great opportunity for students to develop their conversation skills, increase their confidence levels and experience live Broadway musicals!
NEXT STOP BROADWAY
Next Stop BROADWAY® transports local theater-loving youth ages 10-17 to the “Golden Age of Broadway.” Through workshops, classes and rehearsals, they tap their creativity, hone their skills and cultivate their passions in the collaborative context of the ensemble – all in one of the nation’s foremost independent theaters! This five-day, rigorous immersion into the music and choreography of iconic chorus numbers culminates in an “Opening Night” performance on the PPAC stage for families and friends.
Parent gratitude: I recently had the absolute pleasure of witnessing the magic unfold at the Next Stop Broadway, and I must say, it’s a shining gem in the realm of performing arts education. From the moment I watched my child step into PPAC, it was evident that something special was happening. The dedication of the talented and passionate instructors was matched only by the enthusiasm radiating from the students themselves. Next Stop Broadway is not just a summer camp; it’s a creative haven where young talents are nurtured and dreams take center stage.
OCEAN STATE STAR AWARDS
The Ocean State Star Awards program is designed to celebrate, support and advocate for high school musical theater education throughout Rhode Island. The program celebrates high school musicals, students and teachers by formally recognizing the extraordinary achievements of our state’s high school productions. To participate, schools register to have their production reviewed by a qualified team of adjudicators. During the spring of each review period, PPAC will host an award showcase to recognize the outstanding achievements of high school musical theater productions and students that is modeled after the Tony Awards®. The Ocean State Star Awards becomes a feeder program to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy® Awards in New York City.
Callista DeFeo from Bishop Feehan High School and Thomas Jaques from Bishop Hendricken High School were selected as nominees to represent Rhode Island at the Jimmy Awards in 2023.
Arts Supporter review: Last night’s show was spectacular. I have never seen anything better involving high school performers. What said it all was the smiles on their faces, not only as they performed, but as they waited backstage. Getting to perform on that stage is such a great thing for these kids. For them, theater is a sport, so performing on PPAC’s stage is sort of like a football player playing at Gillette Stadium. That show did so much to boost these kids’ self-esteem, and to further their dreams. Who knows? Some of them could come back at some point in the future with a touring show.
SENSORY-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES
PPAC’s sensory-friendly performances create a guest experience that is welcoming, judgment-free and inclusive of guests with a wide range of sensory, learning and physical differences. The performance is modified for individuals with sensory needs as a regular performance may be too loud, too bright or too busy for people with autism spectrum disorders, sensory processing disorders, anxiety or other cognitive/physical disabilities. PPAC works closely with our partners at The Autism Project to train staff, create break spaces for use during the performance and identify potential audiences.
JASON MRAZ - 2024
Coming Summer of 2024 for a special afternoon Sensory-Friendly performance at PPAC.
THE VANISHING ELEPHANT - 2025
This incredible story of resilience and friendship, inspired by true events, comes to life through large-scale puppetry, illusion and magic. The Vanishing Elephant features stunning puppets designed and made by Helen Foan including a baby elephant, a young adult elephant, a fully grown adult elephant and a tiger. Sensory-Friendly performance is March 15, 2025.
Attendee praise: Thank you for one of the most entertaining, encouraging and all around best performances ever! The world needs more people like you...strong role models. You will never know how much you impact the world. Thank you for moving me!

BIG DREAMS BEGIN WITH BROADWAY
Big Dreams Begin with Broadway offers prime orchestra seats for Broadway or Encore performances throughout the season to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island (BBBS) to distribute to their “bigs” (mentors) and “littles” (children). For many children in the BBBS program, this may be the very first time they get to experience live theater or their first visit to PPAC.
SEATS FOR SERVICE MEMBERS
PPAC’s Seats for Service Members program gives members of the Rhode Island National Guard/USO New England and their families the opportunity to experience live theater first-hand by providing underwritten “preferred seating” to the Theatre’s Broadway performances throughout the year. PPAC created the Seats for Service Members program as a means to express the community’s gratitude and appreciation for our service members’ outstanding sacrifices and courageous efforts.
Staff thank you: On behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters, we extend our heartfelt thanks for the incredible theater experiences you provide to our bigs and littles. The generosity of your donors have allowed us to create meaningful and memorable moments for our matches. We deeply appreciate your support, which contributes to the positive impact on the lives of the children and mentors in our program.
Attendee commendation: From the moment my family and I walked through the doors of PPAC, it was evident that this was more than just an evening at the theater; it was a gesture of gratitude and a celebration of the sacrifices made by our brave service members. From the warm welcome by the staff to the specially curated preshow reception, it was clear that every detail had been meticulously planned to create a memorable occasion. The smiles on the faces of my family and other service members spoke volumes about the success of this outreach program. Thank you for the opportunity to share this experience!
REIGNITE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES
The Reignite Professional Development Series is an educational tool based in the performing arts and features over 50 videos on Costuming, Theatrical Lighting, Theatrical Sound, Scene Design, Theatre Arts, Movement/Choreography and Music/Vocal Arts. These videos are free to all Rhode Island educators who can earn professional learning units towards their certification. This gives educators tools they may need to put on a musical in their schools as well as use the arts to enhance the work they are already doing in their classrooms and provide additional support to schools participating in our Disney Musicals in Schools program. This video series was designed to assist schools that may be under-resourced or on a tight budget, so much of the content addresses how to work, create and find resources for free or low cost.
Providence Public School District administrator support: The partnership with PPAC’s Reignite Professional Development Series has empowered Providence Public School District art and music teachers with innovative tools and strategies that ignite creativity and passion in the classroom while fostering a dynamic learning environment that resonates with students.
Teacher promotion: I loved the videos, they were very informative! I hope to use the skills I learned in the years to come.
MASTER CLASS
Through the Ocean State Star Awards, PPAC hosts Master Classes which provide participants with additional learning opportunities through the touring Broadway shows that come through our venue. Students receive feedback from industry professionals through artistic and technical performance training workshops. These are only offered to school registered in PPAC’s Ocean State Star Awards program.
WONDERS OF THE WURLITZER
PPAC’s “Mighty Wurlitzer” is one of only three fivemanual keyboard consoles ever built by America’s Wurlitzer Company. Built in 1927 to provide full musical accompaniment to silent films, the Wurlitzer was purchased by the City of Providence in 1982. Today, under the direction of House Organist Peter Edwin Krasinski, the Wurlitzer continues to wow audiences! Patrons attending select PPAC shows are treated to a special pre-show musicale. An annual calendar of free WOW@PPAC events invite audiences to unique community experiences featuring the magic of the Wurlitzer. Additionally, PPAC continues to grow an on-line library of free, holiday-themed entertainment available at ppacri.org/wow.
Attendee approval: I recently had the privilege of attending the Wurlitzer event for Juneteenth, it was evident that this concert was more than just a musical performance; it was a powerful homage to the rich tapestry of African American history and the celebration of freedom on Juneteenth. What made this concert truly exceptional was the fusion of music with historical narrative. Between pieces, the audience was treated to insightful commentary and storytelling, providing context and deepening the emotional connection to the music. It was a masterful blend of entertainment and education, creating an enriching experience that left a lasting impression.
VOLUNTEER USHER PROGRAM
The PPAC volunteer usher staff is among the most dedicated group of people you’ll ever come in contact with… and if you’ve attended a performance at PPAC, you have been in contact with at least one of the 300 members of that group!
Seating, directing and assisting upward of 3,100 patrons so they can comfortably and safely enjoy the performance is no easy task. They dedicate thousands of hours each season to ensure things run smoothly at every show.
Ushers are students, members of the community, local business people and retired senior citizens - many have been performing this civic act continuously for more than 15 years! In their service to the Theatre, they have become a family and have forged relationships that last a lifetime.
THEATRE RESTORATION
Restoration is incredibly important to PPAC because it helps preserve history, enhance the audience experience, support the arts community, stimulate economic growth and foster community engagement. It was a busy year of restoration projects at PPAC including replacing the administrative office building roof, renovating the Arcade Bar to make it more functional, stripping and repainting the majority of the under balcony decorative ceiling and purchasing a new state of the art LED lighting system for the stage. By investing in the restoration of our historic theater, PPAC ensures that the “Jewel of Weybosset” will continue to serve as a vibrant cultural hub for years to come.
IN 2023...
Replaced the administrative office building roof
Stripped and repainted the majority of the under balcony decorative ceiling in the Theatre
Purchased new stage lighting with state of the art LED system and lighting board
Updated the outdated lobby and public areas sound system and video display
Updated the lobby lounge bar to make it more functional
GALA CELEBRATION HISTORY
GALA CELEBRATION
Each season, PPAC’s Gala Celebration brings together over 600 supporters from within our community for an elegant evening of entertainment and spectacular food prepared by some of Rhode Island’s top restaurants and catering companies.
Contributions to the Gala Celebration support PPAC’s Community Outreach Initiative which brings theater to life for thousands of audience members and emerging artists by making available low or no-cost programming.
