rology News and BrainyDoc.co.uk have produced a brand new educational app aimed as a teaching and revision aid for urology trainees, nurses and consultants. The app is called the ‘Urology News app’ and is available as a free download on iOS (Apple App Store) and android (GooglePlay) mobiles and tablets. The Urology News app is designed as a medical educational tool and is funded by an educational grant from Porges Coloplast. The app is based on the Spot Test section of the print version of Urology News. Over eight years of Spot Test articles have been collated into teaching cases, and these form the basis of the images, questions and answers contained within the app. The app has a central ‘Home’ menu with Introduction, Spot Test Questions, Exam Mode and Synopsis sections. The Spot Test Questions list a wide variety of urological topics, which are laid out in a logical alphabetical order. A tap on a topic leads to a sub menu of a number of cases. Each case starts with a urological image along with a series of questions and answers. The answers are displayed on the same screen by pressing an answer button. App navigation is easy and intuitive, as the answer button is automatically replaced with a next question button. If the initial image is unclear or too small, you can zoom in and out using the familiar pinch to zoom function. Heading back to either the topics page or the Home menu is available on every page at the top of the screen. The Exam Mode lists cases in a random order, thereby testing a broad knowledge of urology. There is also a Synopsis section which currently has three summaries of andrology topics and is likely to be expanded in the near future. The app will be particularly useful for trainers and trainees in between surgical cases. It provides a point for discussion that can be expanded on with trainees at a variety of stages and used for workplace-based assessments. Trainees preparing for the FRCS Urol examination, consultants and nursing staff will also benefit, as the answers are well researched and accurate. The Urology News app is a welcome addition to the education landscape in urology and highly recommended.

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital scoops the Scope Award The highly successful FLEX-X2 ureterorenoscope from KARL STORZ combines flexibility with strength, ensuring users get the maximum return on their investment in both effectiveness and longevity of the product. To encourage good practice, KARL STORZ recently ran a competition to see which hospital department could get the most uses out of its FLEX-X2. The prize was an upgrade to the high resolution, digital FLEX-XC. The FLEX-X2 is used by nearly 200 NHS urologists, and is a highly respected and popular choice for use in flexible ureteroscopy. Urologists often ask how many uses they should get out of the FLEX-X2; the answer is that it depends on how it is used and looked after. record the number of decontamination cycles the scope passed through before breakage, and present the figures at the next annual meeting. The winner of the FLEX-XC was the team from Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, comprising Mr Neil Burgess, Mr Stuart Irving and Mr Will Finch, which used its FLEX-X2 an impressive 90 times. Best practice guidelines gleaned from this study will be distributed to all UK FLEX-X2 users to help customers maximise even further the cost-effectiveness of this marketleading product. Positive guidelines from the European Association of Urology for minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia The European Association of Urology has recognised the high level of clinical evidence for the UroLift® System – a novel, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia – and has recommended the treatment. The EAU’s positive counsel is given in newly updated “Guidelines for the Management of Non-Neurogenic Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms, Including Benign Prostatic Obstruction”, published in European Urology. The guidelines assist practising urologists in Europe in making informed decisions based on the highest-quality scientific data. The guidelines and recommendations were based on a rigorous systematic review of the published literature on the UroLift System, performed by a panel of experts with urological and epidemiological backgrounds. The review panel graded the clinical evidence supporting the UroLift device Level 1-b, the second-highest level of evidence, denoting evidence obtained from at least one properly designed randomised controlled trial that suggests that the benefits of the clinical service outweigh the potential risks.

The UCB® Rapid is a point-of-care test that specifically measures soluble fragments of cytokeratin 8 and 18 in urine samples. UCB® Rapid provides both qualitative and quantitative measurement. The reader facilitates a risk stratification which is not possible with conventional non-quantitative dichotomised (positive or negative) testing. This is an invaluable adjunct to cystoscopy.
