The Keeler Fellowship Award In 1989 a Keeler Fellowship was created to enable a young ophthalmologist to study a specialised area of ophthalmology overseas or in the UK for up to a year. It is administered by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and is awarded every second year. From its commencement in 1967 100 people have benefited and there have been 14 Fellows since 1989. Professor Philip Bloom, a Trustee of the Keeler Scholarship, was one of its first recipients. It enabled him to fund his glaucoma fellowship at Moorfields and the Western Eye Hospital, setting up his career as consultant in a subspeciality.

Richard Scawn’s 2012 award supported an oculoplastic and reconstructive fellowship at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) where he gained excellent technical surgical skills and clinical experience under international experts Dr Kikkawa and Dr Korn. Richard is now passing those skills onto the next generation of ophthalmologists. For further information contact: Laura Haverley, UK Sales & Marketing Manager, Keeler Ltd. Clement Clarke centenary movie now available online

Flex Module for the SPECTRALIS used in first human aqueous angiography study

Haag-Streit UK is delighted to announce its commemorative movie, celebrating 100 years of Clement Clarke Limited, is now available online. ‘Clement Clarke Centenary Movie, 1917-2017 – the First 100 Years’, can be viewed at http://hsuk.co/ clementclarkemovie either in full or in smaller bitesized chapters. This year marks the centenary of Clement Clarke Limited and throughout 2017, Haag-Streit UK, along with sister companies; Clement Clarke International, John Weiss & Sons and Clement Clarke Holdings, will be celebrating the company’s history. The movie commences with the company’s humble beginnings in 1917, when Clement Clarke Dispensing Opticians was formed. As we move through 100 years of history, our journey celebrates the design and development of many other products still used in modern practice, for example, the Perkins hand-held tonometer, BA 904 portable slit-lamp and Tonosafe disposable prisms.

A study, headed by Dr Alex Huang, Doheny Eye Institute, USA, has confirmed the efficacy of live aqueous angiography on human patients that require cataract surgery by using the Flex Module for SPECTRALIS®. SPECTRALIS Flex Module, with its movable stand and an adjustable arm, enables all SPECTRALIS examinations to be performed on patients lying down in the supine position. “Now that we can examine individual patients to understand the physiology of aqueous humor outflow pathways, it may be possible to enhance the magnitude of IOP lowering and its predictability” explains Christopher Mody, Director of Clinical Services. The next study phase will use aqueous angiography on glaucoma subjects who need cataract surgery to determine how more effective IOP reduction can be achieved using MIGS. The Flex Module will be available for delivery in June 2017.

Precise Sterile Single-use Sharp Angled Epilation Forceps

Pioneering HD updates launched for the AngioVue OCT-A system Haag-Streit UK is pleased to announce the launch of AngioVueHD imaging. This high density OCT Angiography (OCT-A) imaging will provide significant improvement in the resolution and peripheral visualisation of vasculature in the eye. AngioVueHD imaging delivers OCT-A scans with 73% more sampling points, providing the user with a 6mm x 6mm scan with outstanding resolution. It also improves image resolution by approximately 33% over the existing field-ofview. The improvements enable physicians to more closely assess the fine vasculature in the eye for changes which could indicate ocular disease. Optovue has also launched AngioVueHD Montage which automatically combines two HD images of the central macula region and at the optic disc, in a 10mm x 6mm field-of-view. This is useful for imaging vasculature in potential pathologies that may extend into the periphery of the imaging plane.

NEWS AND PRODUCT UPDATE

Glaucoma update: iStent®

As part of a global expansion initiative, Glaukos Corporation has established a UK operation to directly manage sales, marketing, training and support of the iStent®. Glaukos Corporation is an ophthalmic medical technology company focused on the development and commercialisation of breakthrough products and procedures designed to transform the treatment of glaucoma, one of the world’s leading causes of blindness. The company pioneered micro-invasive glaucoma surgery, or MIGS, to revolutionise the traditional glaucoma treatment and management paradigm. Our mission is to pioneer and lead the global glaucoma market with micro-scale injectable therapies that advance the existing standardof-care and enrich the lives and treatment alternatives for glaucoma patients worldwide.

Our iStent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass stent is the first-ever MIGS solution, providing a viable alternative to daily, multi-dose prescription eye drop regimens or complex, invasive surgeries for numerous glaucoma patients. Believed to be the smallest device ever implanted in the human body, iStent® has been inserted into more than 250,000 eyes to date. Inserted through a small corneal incision made during cataract surgery, iStent® bypasses the trabecular meshwork, which is the area of greatest resistance to aqueous humor outflow, and is placed directly into Schlemm’s canal, the eye’s drainage system. Once in place, it restores natural fluid outflow for sustained reductions in intraocular pressure. With more than five years of published efficacy and safety data, clinical studies show that most iStent® patients experience a reduction in reliance on topical glaucoma medications [1]. Our breakthrough glaucoma devices are currently approved for use in more than 30 countries. 1. Data on file.

Grafton Optical – exclusive partnership with Visionix on the revolutionary new Eye Refract Grafton Optical has announced its exclusive partnership with Visionix to supply the revolutionary new Eye Refract within the UK and Ireland. Available now, the Eye Refract is the perfect instrument for eye care professionals wishing to achieve a highly accurate refraction in a quarter of the time of traditional methods. Eye Refract features a dual Aberrometer that utilises a unique and innovative technology which couples an automatic refraction measurement and a simultaneous iterative lens adjustment. This instrument has revolutionised the practice of refraction offering quick, accurate, and reliable measurements. Eye Refract allows eye care professionals to optimise time spent with patients

by offering a highly customised experience with an exceptional prescription. The instrument brings the average time of a standard refraction down from 8-10 minutes, to 2 minutes. Eye Refract features two Shack-Hartmann sensors running simultaneously to provide real time binocular refraction. These sensors combined with the phoropter head allow Eye Refract to automatically correct visual defects. • Perfect visual acuity in less than one minute less dedicated time for refraction, more time to interact with patients. • Accurate and reliable prescriptions offer maximum patient comfort in less time. • Monocular measurement in a binocular environment offers a more precise and comfortable prescription based on individual visual behaviour. • Real time lens adjustment based on patient brain reactions.

SPECTRALIS OCT Angiography Module update enhances speed and expands the field of view Heidelberg Engineering has released an update for the SPECTRALIS OCT Angiography Module, which includes a significantly faster image processing time and the ability to customise the OCTA image field of view to suit the level of detail required for clinical assessment. The field of view ranges from a high resolution 10°x10° at 5.7µm/ pixel lateral resolution to a full field of 30°x15° at 11µm/pixel. “The unique algorithm utilised in the SPECTRALIS OCT Angiography Module separates vascular flow from structure using a sophisticated statistical analysis that, put simply, assigns flow as white and structure as black in the image,” explains Christopher Mody, Director of Clinical
