Cochlear™ Nucleus® Kanso® Sound Processor – first off-the-ear sound processor with proven clinical outcomes The new Nucleus® Kanso® Sound Processor (CP950) is one of the smallest and lightest off-the-ear sound processors and uses the same industry-leading hearing technology as the Cochlear Nucleus 6 Sound Processor (CP900 Series) with proven clinical outcomes.

Outcomes with adult patients In a recent clinical trial, Kanso adult recipients showed an improvement of 22% with SCAN over standard directionality during noise testing and a 68% improvement with SCAN compared with a single microphone setting [1]. The same study showed that the mean results for speech recognition in quiet and noise are similar for the Kanso Sound Processor and Nucleus 6 Sound Processor (CP900 Series). Patients choosing the Kanso Sound Processor can be confident they will not miss out on achieving the same levels of hearing performance as with Nucleus 6 Sound Processor (CP900 Series).

Outcomes with paediatric patients A pilot study at the ENT department of the Ghent University Hospital in Belgium was conducted to assess suitability of the Kanso Sound Processor for the paediatric recipients. The objective speech recognition measures in quiet and noise suggest equivalent speech recognition and listening performance with the off-the-ear Nucleus Kanso Sound Processor, as compared with the behindthe-ear Nucleus 6 Sound Processor. This concurs with the adult user study findings. The subjective evaluation of device retention, comfort and listening performance with the Kanso Sound Processor were reported after four weeks of device use. Patients and carers were asked to compare the Kanso Sound Processor to

the Nucleus 6 Sound Processor using a five-point scale [2]. Cochlear says: “The Kanso Sound Processor is a proven alternative to the Nucleus 6 Sound Processor for patients looking for a comfortable, simple and discreet way to wear their sound processor.” References: 1.

NEWS AND PRODUCT UPDATE

Have hearing aids entered the era of connectivity? Most know that hearing aids have come to sound better over the years, but many do not realise that they now offer another benefit: connectivity. The world has entered an era of connectivity, and the hearing industry is at the forefront of it. Consider these recent innovations in the hearing industry: •

Made-for-iPhone hearing aids that allow wearers to stream music and phone calls directly to their hearing aids An intuitive hearing app that lets wearers design their own hearing by adjusting sound and customising programs.

The made-for-iPhone advantage

When Apple introduced the first generation iPhone in 2007, most did not anticipate just how much smartphones would revolutionise how we interact with the world around us. However, a smartphone is only smart if its owner is able to see and hear it. For that, Apple designed accessibility options for people with hearing loss, visual impairments, and motor

issues. For hearing aid wearers these include: •

The latest hearing technology, Widex BEYOND offers:

Easy pairing of your hearing aid with your smart phone Volume control, direct streaming, and audio presets.

• Apps take connectivity with iPhones one-step further, with the ability to control hearing aids and design personalised location-specific sound settings. Take a look at the most recent made-foriPhone hearing aid app for Widex BEYOND which uses the iPhone’s intuitive swipe function.

Wider sound pictures that allow wearers to hear both soft and loud sounds in comfort Wind Noise Reduction to allow the wearer to hear speech in even the most windy environments Automatic detection of listening environments, to make sure that wearers hear the right sound at the right time in the right place.

Staying connected

Connectivity features and accessories do not take away from the hearing aid’s core function: to help people hear well. In contrast, new technology has helped hearing aids to become even better at distinguishing speech in noisy environments.

Rayovac to showcase cutting-edge technology around the world

‘World-leading’ [1] hearing aid battery manufacturer Rayovac has a packed calendar coming up, showcasing products and innovations at hearing conferences around the globe. Over the next two months Rayovac will welcome hundreds of visitors to its stands at French Congress 39ème Congrès des Audioprothésistes (24-26 March, Paris, France), Audiology Now! (5-8 April, Indianapolis, USA) and ME-OTO (11-13 April, Dubai), before heading on to AEDA (18-20 May, Madrid, Spain). Visitors to the Rayovac stand will discover the battery manufacturer’s latest technology, designed to give hearing aid users their best battery experience from start to finish, guaranteed [2]. Rayovac, a division of Spectrum Brands (UK) Ltd., will also be giving delegates an insight into its unique business builder programme, the Rayovac ProLine Excellence Club.

Cochlear™ Carina® System. Invisible. Simple. Powerful

The Cochlear™ Carina® System is a unique middle-ear implant indicated for patients with sensorineural or mixed hearing loss and has a fitting range of up to 85dB SNHL. It is the only middle-ear implant that features Cochlear’s totally implantable microphone (TIM) and, along with internal signal processing; it allows patients to hear without an external device, providing 100% invisible hearing. Because the system is all under the skin, patients can’t lose it, drop it or get it wet. They can swim, wear a helmet and take a shower. They can continue to live an active lifestyle, without having to worry about their hearing device. The Carina System is also one of the world’s most powerful middle-ear implants. The MicroDrive™ Actuator delivers a precise and reliable transfer of power, helping to ensure good and predictable outcomes. Studies show that patients perform at least as well as with the Carina System compared with their hearing aids in both quiet and noisy environments [1,2]. Cochlear says: “With proven performance and patient satisfaction the Cochlear Carina System allows patients to hear the way they want to hear, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Teneo™ and Sprint™ are now ATEX certified

Courtesy Sivantos.

Explosive atmospheres can be caused by flammable gases, mists or vapours or combustible dusts. Enough of the substance, mixed with air, is all that is needed to cause an explosion. Many work places contain, or have activities that produce potentially explosive atmospheres. ATEX is the name commonly given to the Eurpoean directive for using electronic devices such as hearing aids in potentially explosive atmospheres – Directive 2014/34/EU. Teneo and Sprint hearing aids are ATEX certified, so can be used in certain potentially explosive environments or activities. For patients requiring ATEX certified hearing aids, the ATEX certification documents and required hearing aids can be ordered directly from Sivantos. The patient receives an ATEX certificate and an ATEX card that can be shown to employers as evidence of ATEX certification. For more information about Teneo and Sprint and for ATEX order details, please contact a Sivantos NHS Audiologist or the Sivantos Customer Services

The Cochlear™ Wireless Mini Microphone 2+ in classrooms Children with hearing implant solutions may still struggle to hear and understand speech in noisy situations and over distance. Providing them with good, clear and robust hearing in these challenging circumstances is essential to helping them achieve success in the classroom and beyond. The Cochlear™ Wireless Mini Microphone 2+ (Mini Mic 2+) can help bring children closer to sound by streaming high-quality audio directly to their sound processor. The Mini Mic 2+ is small, discreet and easy-to-use. It has directional microphones offering an improved signal-tonoise ratio, a connectivity range up to 25 metres and an average battery life that lasts a full day in use, making it very convenient for education. In addition, a single FM receiver can be plugged into the Mini Microphone 2+ to stream bilaterally or bimodally. New data presented at ACIA 2016 by Wolfe et al. ‘True Wireless and Bimodal / Bilateral Fittings’ shows that hearing performance with the Mini Microphone 2+ is similar to that achieved with a far more complex and costly FM system. Sentence recognition was evaluated while Nucleus 6 recipients used each of the two devices

New RPT-100 Predictive Thermometer from Riester offers fast and reliable readings The new clinical grade RPT-100 predictive thermometer from Riester provides extremely fast and reliable temperature readings. By utilising a unique software algorithm, it can predict what a patient’s temperature will be in three to five seconds. The RPT-100 offers significant advantages over infrared ear thermometry. Not only is it much easier to use, but false readings due to incorrect operation are much less likely. It also proves much quicker temperature readings – especially in the ‘oral quick mode’. The RPT-100 is designed for use with Riester’s ri-former modular, wall-mounted diagnostic station, which can be configured to suit the requirements and location. In addition to predictive thermometry, other options include blood pressure monitors, ophthalmoscopes, otoscopes, dermatoscopes and ear specula dispensers.

Key features of ri-former include a modular design, so the user can decide on configuration; a central power supply, so no need for batteries; an anti-theft option for instrument heads; and a three-year warranty if used with high performance LED instrument heads. As with all Riester instruments, the RPT-100 predictive thermometer is manufactured according to the Directive 93/42 EEC and subject to the strictest quality controls at all times. Good listening: Atmos donates audiology set for the ‘Hörmobil’

DSB President Dr Harald Seidler (R) thanks Atmos Managing Director Maik Greiser for the audiometer donated by Atmos. With them, (L to R) Jörg Pahlke, Business Unit Manager System Integration and Thomas Kreller, Sales Manager Diagnostics. Copyright Atmos MedizinTechnik.

Medical technology manufacturer Atmos MedizinTechnik has donated an audiometer to the Deutscher Schwerhörigenbund (DSB, the German

association for those with impaired hearing), for use in their ‘Hörmobil’, a mobile centre which raises awareness of causes and prevention of deafness, available treatments and rehabilitation, provides hearing checks and gives advice. With the Hörmobil, the DSB aims to make significant improvements in the capability of people with hearing impairments to participate in social life, and particularly in the world of work. “With the PC audiometer and the tablet for operating it, the DSB will have state-of-the-art diagnostic technology to hand. This will simplify examinations, and extend the diagnostic possibilities,” explains Jörg Pahlke, Business Unit Manager System Integration at Atmos. Current figures show just how important the commitment of the specialists from Atmos and DSB is. There are approximately 13.4 million people with impaired hearing in Germany, and of these, six million – and growing – are so severely affected that they require technical support such as a hearing aid. But currently only about 2.5 million people have hearing aids. Commenting on the donation, DSB President Dr Harald Seidler, who himself has a cochlear implant, said: “We very much appreciate the commitment of Atmos. When performing 60-80 hearing tests a day, every contribution that improves the quality of our work and optimises the work processes in our Hörmobil is extremely welcome!” The Hörmobil began touring in 2006 and since then has taken part in about 500 interventions in towns all over Germany, reaching more than 580,000 hearing-impaired, families and interested people. And the tremendous achievement of the Hörmobil crew: they have carried out approximately 18,000 hearing tests to date. For further information contact: Atmos MedizinTechnik GmbH & Co. Open ultrasonic rhinoplasty technique: a smooth and less traumatic procedure Ultrasonic piezoelectric devices open many opportunities in bone reshaping and recently in rhinoplasty. Piezoelectric systems paired with ultrasound activated miniaturised instruments increase safety and precision. It is now possible to perform osteotomies on any type of bone (thin, brittle or mobile) under direct vision without adjacent fractures while preserving soft tissue. Ultrasonic rhinoplasty produces better patient outcomes: less ecchymosis and oedema with more natural results. Post-surgical recovery is as a result shorter. According to Dr Gerbault, Plastic Surgeon based in Vincennes, France: “Piezoelectric surgery is a real disruptive technology in rhinoplasty, it allows a paradigm shift in the way of reshaping bones in rhinoplasty. Stable bones can be positioned with an unparalleled accuracy under direct vision and reshaped to achieve a perfect symmetry and smoothness of the bony vault. For the first time in the history of rhinoplasty, a custom reshaping of the nasal bones is easily achievable.” For further information contact: COMEG T: +33 (0)442 98 01 01 / +49 (0)7461 9344 0 E: info@comegmedical.com www.comegmedical.com
