NEWS AND PRODUCT UPDATE
Nine summer activities needing Ear Gear
Many people are more active in summer months and damaging, or worse, losing a hearing instrument is never on the agenda. Ear Gear is tremendously useful for active lifestyles allowing peace of mind to fully enjoy the season ahead.
The pool: Many cochlear implant sound processors are water-resistant but can still drop accidentally underwater. Boating: A lost hearing instrument in a massive body of water is nearly impossible to retrieve. Fishing: The motion of casting, or simply a bump from a fishing rod, can knock off the device. Playing with grandchildren: Children are out of school and have endless energy. Running around with them in the hotter months produces more sweat and opportunities for loss. The beach: Even if the hearing instrument is not dropped directly into the sand, wind can still cause it to get trapped inside. Humidity is also higher at the beach allowing moisture to seep inside. Hiking: When hiking, sweat is inevitable but uneven trails can cause hearing instruments to shake and dislodge. Golfing: Hours under intense sunlight causes
more sweat but Ear Gear also holds instruments in place when making a big shot; keeping all focus on the swing and not losing an expensive device. Strolling in a park: Tilting your head up to look at the sites or even putting on sunglasses can turn a simple stroll stressful if instruments fall off. Riding a bike: Removing helmets and bumps in the road can dislodge hearing instruments. Bikers also fight wind noise and sweat forming around the instrument. Ear Gear is an acoustically transparent spandex sleeve and comes in various models including corded and cordless, perfect for any activity. Thousands of hearing instruments have been protected from sweat, dirt, moisture, loss and wind noise. For further information contact: Gear for Ears www.gearforears.com

Rayovac has announced that it is taking ground-breaking steps in becoming the first of the leading hearing aid battery manufacturers* to cease mercury usage from all of its products worldwide. The journey towards its full mercury conversion began well over a decade ago. In a bid to lead the way on cleaner, more sustainable manufacturing, the company, a division of Spectrum Brands Inc., has continuously invested in research, development and the manufacturing process, to enable the global switch to the highest quality mercury-free products. Mercury is traditionally used as a stabilising ingredient in batteries, but brings with it an environmental risk. Removing it means less harmful ingredients are used in the production process and this in turn reduces the amount of environmental exposure to mercury. While the hearing aid battery manufacturer’s products now become less harmful to the planet, they will still offer consumers the best of the manufacturer’s innovative technologies, delivering high quality performance throughout the life of the battery and delivering power on demand in all hearing situations.

This distinguished honour is awarded in recognition of an outstanding effort in promoting and marketing Danish products and services abroad. In his speech the Danish Minister of Defence highlighted how Danish technology and innovation has helped millions of American’s with hearing loss. With the event set during the Patriotic Festival – also called Warrior Week – the Minister emphasised how Danish technology pioneered by GN, among others, has helped thousands of American warriors returning from the battlegrounds with damaged hearing. Over the past five years, GN Hearing has experienced unparalleled growth and doubled its market share in the United States. In 2016, North America accounted for half of GN Hearing’s total revenue, providing a substantial share of export-generated revenue to Denmark. Part of this success can be attributed to Kim Lody’s strong focus on the specific needs of veterans. Today, more than one in five American veterans with hearing loss choose a hearing aid from GN Hearing. The recently launched ReSound LiNX 3D offers users unmatched sound quality, efficient fitting and ground-breaking remote fine-tuning, creating an entirely new hearing care experience. Kim Lody, GN Hearing SVP and North American President, comments: “I am honoured to receive such a prestigious award, which is truly a reflection of the team’s dedication and hard work. The future is now: with Sprint and TeleCare Sprint, a new innovation for NHS audiology services with an evidence* based workflow, has just raised the innovation bar even higher. The highly sophisticated Sprint hearing aids can not only be fitted in an instant, but using the new myHearing App, can now transform how patients manage and maintain their hearing aids, with patients being right at the centre of the fitting process. What this means for the patient? Better communication with their audiologist, greater satisfaction with their hearing aids and reduced numbers of return visits to the clinic. What does this mean for the audiologist? Improved patient outcomes and satisfaction, instant patient feedback and greater efficiency with reduced follow-ups in the clinic.

Cochlear™ Nucleus® Profile with Slim Modiolar Electrode (CI532)
Network Medical Products Ltd celebrates 20th anniversary
The Cochlear™ Nucleus® Profile with Slim Modiolar Electrode (CI532) is the world’s thinnest full-length perimodiolar electrode. It comes on the Cochlear™ Nucleus® Profile implant, the most reliable implant available. It is designed to boost hearing performance, preserve hearing structures and is easy for surgeons to use.
Network Medical is proud to announce its 20th anniversary as a fully integrated designer and manufacturer of quality ENT and ophthalmic products. Established in 1997, Network Medical has built its reputation on consistent and reliable product quality that surgeons trust time and time again. The last 20 years has seen Network Medical grow from its modest origins into a global company operating across 72 countries, with manufacturing sites in both the UK and USA. “Modern materials, modern design and modern process control are the drivers behind Network Medicals success. Our innovative and patent protected designs which have been proven to improve surgical outcomes are amongst our proudest achievements,” commented Phil Weston, CEO.

Perimodiolar placement, with electrodes sitting closest to the hearing nerve, results in a smaller spread of excitation and lower electrical stimulation thresholds. This focused electrical stimulation translates into optimal hearing outcomes. As the thinnest full-length electrode, it protects and preserves the delicate inner ear, thus minimising insertion trauma and maximising hearing performance. Reloadable, and with unique insertion mechanisms, the Nucleus Profile with Slim Modiolar Electrode (CI532) aids smooth, easy insertion that suits the full range of surgical approaches.
The Nucleus Profile with Slim Modiolar Electrode (CI532) further strengthens Cochlear’s market-leading electrode portfolio, offering surgeons and their patients a wide choice for different types of hearing loss, “a perfect fit for every ear”.

NEWS AND PRODUCT UPDATE
Breaking news from Oticon Medical Exciting news was revealed at the Oticon Medical symposium during the ESPCI congress in Lisbon, Portugal in May. The company presented a brand new cochlear implant (CI) sound processor to the market – the Neuro 2. The Neuro 2 is the smallest Behind-The-Ear (BTE) CI sound processor [1] and sets completely new standards in cochlear implant BTE design. The Neuro System consisting of the Neuro Zti implant and the Neuro One sound processor was fully released in January 2017 after a controlled launch phase. The Neuro System has already shown very good outcomes both on the surgical side [2] and on the audiological side – especially on speech in background noise [3]. Further improvements are expected with the new Neuro 2 sound processor, powered by the Inium Sense platform. Delegates were able to learn more about the Neuro 2 and its many configurations and accessories and to experience first-hand the craftsmanship and high quality engineering that has gone into its design. At the congress, Oticon Medical also introduced new fitting software – the Genie Medical CI fitting software. This software is a game changer as the new fitting concept takes an audiology-based approach designed to make the software more intuitive and easy to use for clinics. The realisation of the Neuro 2 sound processor
is a true team effort made possible through the commitment and collaboration of the teams from Oticon Medical’s headquarters in Nice, France and in Copenhagen, Denmark. This could be clearly seen at the symposium where all members of the Oticon Medical team took to the stage at the end of the product presentation.
