Viana do Castelo is situated in northern Portugal, close to the city Porto. Viana do Castelo is a charming historical city with its great location on the oceanside where the river Lima is flowing to the ocean. The plot for the new market hall is just next to this point. Another elements and nearby buildings are giving to the plot even more exclusiveness – the plot is surrounded by old fortress on one side, by church on an elevated platform on the other side and by the historical center of Viana do Castelo on the third side. An industrial part of docklands nearby put even more influences for this spot. Viana do Castelo has clearly defined historical nucleus, which is mainly spread along the street Av. dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra. This street is creating main axis of the historical downtown – it is leading from the train station to the riverside. Old buldings, narrow streets and maritime feeling is typical for this part of the city. The riverside represents a new part of the city – the contemporary one. Siza’s library and other modern buildings give Viana something what was not there. We can see another spreading of the contemporary architecture to the city, several new housing developments was built in the historical part. And this is creating special feeling for visitors, the unexpected one. On the other hand historical downtown is still living his own life, separated from the other parts. This is a pity and the plot for new market hall is great for joining these separated parts together.

PERSONAL ANALYSIS The plot is strictly defined by boarders along his sides - there is a fortress, blocks of the historical center, small attached houses and a church. But it is also very close to river Lima and the Atlantic Ocean and it can be much more connected with the river/ocean. For doing this it is neccesary to destroy one of the boarders. It is not hard to find the proper one - in the southern part of the site are small houses of fishermen which are in unsatisfactory conditions. Pulling down these houses will solve all of the problems - the site will have the connection with the water and we can offer a new place for fishermen’s life in the market hall. For the best connection with the historical downtown are really important good a smooth pedestrian connections - and the street marked with the orange colour will do this trick. Also good accesibility by car is essential - for this purposes there is a road marked in blue and also there is a posisbility of use the preexisting underground parking. For the site is interesting really good visibility from the cathedral above the city, because every important place in Viana do Castelo should be visible from the cathedral, which is dominant of the city.

Mercado Santa Caterina - Barcelona

THEORY Our theoretical work, that was also done in groups, was dealing with the typologies of market halls. For our analysis we chose three different kinds of market halls - the first one was one of the most interesting markets in Barcelona, the second one was from the Czech Republic which is nowadays not serving as a market and the third one is example of future market halls from Rotterdam. We were mainly focused on the way how the market hall works with visitors, cars, supply and how it is integrated in the city. We also made some general schemes of market’s function to simplify our research.

The most inspirative for me was Market Hall in Rotterdam designed by MVRDV that should be constructed in 2014. This building fullfilled almost every of my intentions for my proposal - it should be a new icon of the city, it is destroying the common image of the market hall, it has several other functions instead of the market, its entrances reacts to the main pedestrian flows etc. Specially I like the way how the apartments are integrated into the market hall. They are living with the market hall, but they can be also seen as separated if they need or want to (windows are facing to the outside facade of the building with beautiful view, the entrances are separated...). I was thinking about the apartments inside the market hall before I saw this market hall (these thoughts were based on my analysis of the site). Because of this market hall I made the final decision that I also want to implement the apartment inside and work with them in the way MVRDV did in this project.

CONCEPT The biggest inspiration of this project was water, mainly the act when river is flowing to the ocean. This is very dynamic act which is creating a place for new and different life. And the new designed market hall should do the same – bring people inside, whirl with them, let them go with the flow in the market and also create place for new living for local fisherman who are living nearby in unsatisfactory conditions. The water is brought figuratively to the foundations of the market. In the middle of the building is designed a small square with water. Then water goes under the building in the direction to the river and just before the end there is designed children’s water playground. The shape of the building is also derived from water – it has the shape of the stone which was rounded in the water with some small holes into it like a reminiscence of life which is also participating in this process.

FIRST PROPOSALS In the begginng my main aim was to find a way how to connect the market hall with the city as much as I can. I found the mostly used pedestrian path to the site with the help of previous analysis (marked with pink in the sketch below) and I wanted to connect this path (and the historical city) with the riverside. The riverside is nowadays not used and in my opinion it is a pity. Also the historical city can be expanded a little bit with the site. Another thing I wanted to do was joining the eastern historical center with the western part of the city close to the ocean. And the market hall should play the role of joining element in this intention. I decided to do one volume with all of the function I desire inside. The new market hall should be one of the landmarks of the city, the new icon. When I put all my intentions on the paper first shape was designed. It was influenced by the main pedestrian movements, by the heights of the surrounding buildings. Also I designed new housing development on the west to create a bridge between the preexisting and newly designed. From the very first sketches I also wanted to bring the water into the market hall, so I designed a small river going from the market hall to river Lima. But I was still not satisfied with the shape of the market hall, it still needed something more, maybe more water...

THE SHAPE I was still thinking about the shape of the building. From the begining I was feeling that this place needs something organic and dynamic. So I finally decided to do the shape more connected with the water, so I rounded the previous shape like water do with the rocks. And my final shape was there.

PRESENTATION 01 The shape was clear, the position in the site also so I could start focus on the inside of the market hall. I decided to put the market place to the second floor of the building to give it more importance and speciality. Main entrances to the building are to the second floor, there are designed ramps to overcome this difference in heights. In the market floor is also place for fish market where can fishermen who will be living upstairs sell their fish. In the first floor I designed services for people - restaurants and shops. There is also place for supply whole the bulding and separate entrance for the inhabitants. The dominant of the first floor is the courtyard with the water element - there is a small lake where is the rainwater retained and it is also purified by plants and used in the restaurants. In the third floor the apartments for fishermen were designed. The fishermen were living near the river in the unsatisfactory conditions so I want to give them new place for living and new opportunities. There is also designed a multifunctional space in the third floor. I also started to think about the skin of the building.

DEVELOPMENT After the intermediate presentation I was still developing the project and I was trying to solve the problems. I created an overall idea about the complete site - it will be divided into four zones with different functions and with different color. After every sunset the market hall will be illuminated by the color of the zone where were the most visitors/users. So every evening the building should look different, it depends on the specific day and behaviour of people. I also reworked the first floor. I divided it into two parts - one for the visitors in the southern part with restaurants and shops and the second one for citizens with place for arts and crafts, gym etc. The third floor was also developed a little bit. I designed the apartments, I placed them and I created a garden using the rest space between two lines of apartments. This garden will serve for the people from apartments, they will grow their fruits and vegetables there. I also placed a retention tank for rain water above the multifunctional space that will serve for irrigation of the garden. Above each apartment will also be small retention tank for rain water used for flushing. The load-bearing system is a steel skeleton frame with a distance between columns around 15 metres, where are steel castellated beams. The third floor apartements are designed like “box in a box with their own thermal insulation. The facade of the first and second floor is curtain wall, the facade of the third floor is a painted wall. All of this covered by metal plates (or there is a possibility of use plastic plates) which are creating the unique shape. The plates are perforated to bring the sunlight into the building. The plastic plates can be translucent or even transparent in the upper part of the building (with the gradient of translucency/transparency).
