Seniors Inspire Generosity Christina Kappil
It has been a long and busy year here at Prairie Ridge, but that didn’t stop the seniors in the class of 2013 from taking time out of their busy schedules to help make a difference in the school. At the beginning of the year, many students offered wonderful suggestions as to how to leave a lasting impression on Prairie Ridge. Jordan Getzelman explained “There were a lot of different ideas offered, through feedback from students and parents. The main goal was to impact the school and the community in a positive way.” Mrs. Buck and the senior class officers—Courtney Lefevre, Christina Kappil, Tyler Kendall, Gabby Sim, Jessica Koffer, and Jordan Getzelman— worked diligently to organize the multiple acts of charity throughout the year. The first event was a food drive November 12-16. Students and teachers were encouraged to partake in friendly competition to see which homeroom could donate the most number of food items to the Crystal Lake Food Pantry. In total, the
drive accumulated 1500 pounds of food. During the holiday season, the seniors decided again to show their support of the community by organizing a toy drive with Toys for Tots. Many less fortunate children were able to receive a gift on Christmas because of the generosity of the Prairie Ridge students and staff. To keep the action going, the senior leaders organized a dodgeball tournament and a volleyball tournament which raised $400 for Miracles for Moose. Not only did this benefit Anthony Mustari, a PR graduate, but it brought all the PR students together as they competed with their teams to be the champions. One of the most rewarding senior project activities was the D47 Game Day. Many friendships were made as PR seniors spent a day playing with special needs children from District 47 elementary school. The seniors were each assigned to one of the children and provided with the opportunity to personally make that child happy. The gym was filled with the
laughter of children as they were pulled around on scooters and played baggo, basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, hockey, or any other game that they desired. Although the main focus was to brighten the children’s day, the seniors, too, were touched by how rewarding of an experience this was. Getzelman described this day as “absolutely awesome. It’s a really special day.” PR seniors learned that even something as small as making a child smile can make a huge difference. Finally, seniors hosted the fifth annual 5K on Sunday, April 28. It was sponsored by several local businesses in the area. Over 120 students, teachers, and people from all over the community came together that day to show their support as they ran, walked, or cheered each other on. Kendall said “everyone was really energized.” Participants came away with a free t-shirt commemorating the event. The $1900 raised will go toward the Brayden Spencer Powell Memorial scholarships (see more page 4).
This year has been a huge success for the seniors. All who have helped to make a difference this year should know that through their efforts, they have fortified the positive atmosphere at Prairie Ridge and touched the lives of many in the community.
Prairie Ridge Awards Ceremony (PRAC) Johanna Sveden
“Four guys. Four girls. They’re PRAC-tically famous!” is the catch phrase that was written on the posters publicizing the 2013 Prairie Ridge Awards Ceremony, which attracted an impressive crowd of students wanting to see what their classmates had in store. This annual event sponsored by Student Council featured eight seniors who showcased their talents to win money for donation to a charity of their choosing. Joseph Schneider, Jack Disselhorst, Jimmy Olander, Even Sanchez, Julia Reid, Marisa Gerstbrein, Margaret Schlofner, and Caitlin Scott were chosen to compete this year. While these ladies and gents performed terrifically, MCs Bij Heydari and Matt Baldocchi really stole the show with their PRAC camp video and other entertaining stunts throughout the evening. Their spontaneous rendition of Kanye West’s “Homecoming” surprised the audience and had everyone cheering. Afterwards, senior Ross Carpenter noted that “the ‘unplanned’ duet with Bij and Matt was one of the best moments of the whole show.” Several students also participated in the variety show, which had acts that were interspersed between the PRAC performances. Neil Pretkelis, magician, was definitely a crowd favorite. His latest trick, guessing a randomly selected word from a thesaurus, especially impressed and stumped the audience. His assistant, guidance counselor Mr. Brown was equally astounded! “I’ve never seen anything like it,” remarked senior Maddy Riddell, regarding Neil’s sleight of hand. “Where did this guy come from?” The PRAC contestants began their evening with a group dance number, with some classy moves from the girls and some awkward moves from the guys. Sanchez first entered for this part wearing a cow suit, stirring up much confusion and incredulity from the student body. Later, Alex Koss had the whole theater dancing with his fun, high-energy variety show act. While everyone waited for the results, the infamous MCs returned to the stage once again for a grape-eating competition. Finally, they announced that Caitlin Scott and Jack Disselhorst were the 2013 winners, and that they would donate their prize money to Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund and Center on Halsted, respectively. Scott had danced a graceful modern piece, and Disselhorst did a hilarious imitation of a listening activity from Spanish class. Pianist Joseph Schneider and singer Julia Reid took the second place awards.

Top of the Class Valedictorian Amanda Weber Anita Venkataswamy
“Being Valedictorian is just the capstone of four years of hard work,” explained Amanda. “It means the culmination of high school and the beginning of what my future can be.” The road to becoming valedictorian was definitely challenging, yet Amanda believes that her secret of success is hard work. “I challenged myself and tried very hard,” she stated. “As long as you work at it, you’ll get what you want.” However, hard work was not the only factor to her achievement. “I set my priorities,” described Amanda. “School always came first for me. I don’t have a job, so it was easy to focus on it.” Though she is number one in her class, Amanda Weber humbly believes that “being first doesn’t change anything. I’m just an average person who likes to read and wants more sleep. I’m just as scared about college as everybody else.” Amanda is not only intelligent and hardworking, but she also is an extremely wellrounded individual, participating in extracurricular activities such as band, marching band, choir, track, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, and yearbook. Apart from school activities, she sings in her church choir, volunteers at various organizations, and is part of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which is her church youth group. “Trying to balance everything is my biggest challenge,” said Amanda. “But my extracurriculars help me with that.” Amanda explained that if not for her after-school activities, she would not have completed her homework as quickly. Out of her plethora of activities, track has always been the most influential for Amanda. She loves running because it “clears her head.” As a varsity sprinter for all four years of high school and a captain for the past two years, Amanda describes how she has learned more about leadership and confidence through her experiences. Some of her fondest memories include “going down to state even though I wasn’t running, sectionals last year, and just practices with my friends and coaches who understand me.” Next year, Amanda will pursue track in college. In addition to managing school, her social life, and activities, Amanda loves to read. She reads whenever she can sneak a minute in, whether it may be before she leaves for school, during breakfast, or before she goes to bed. “I love to read because I love losing myself in a whole other world,” she described. “Authors just know how to write the truth so beautifully. My favorite types of books are realistic fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, and memoir.” Next year, Amanda will be attending DePauw University with an undecided major. As she leaves PR, she advises students to “work hard but allow yourself to have fun. Get involved with things you like to do. Everything will work out.”
Salutatorian Margaret Schlofner Kathryn Teberg
If anyone was ever a triple threat, the first, and best, would definitely be Margaret Schlofner. Armed with the title salutatorian, a voice, and red hair, Margaret is one person who cannot and will not be stopped. You may know her as Belle from this year’s production of Beauty and the Beast, or Lady Edwina in the spring play, Sherlock Holmes, but wherever you recognize her from, one thing is undeniable, there is no one quite like her. It is hard to imagine that she had any time to do her homework--let alone be great at it--what with everything that she does, but she did, and according to her, it was worth it. “I don’t think I missed out on anything” she explained. “Yes, I spent time on school, but it in no way took over my life--I still got to do most of the stuff that every other high schooler does.” In fact, being salutatorian or valedictorian was never her intention. As a freshman her rank came as a surprise. “When I got my report card first semester freshman year, I saw that I was ranked 3, and I figured I might as well keep it up! So it wasn’t initially a goal, but it became one.” Margaret does have a small piece of advice for freshmen though. “Not doing your homework is an easy way to lose points. The hard work you put in now takes a lot of time but will pay off.” And you can take her word for it. Never being one for the easy way, however, Margaret makes sure her free time is next to nonexistent. Margaret is proud to say that she has participated in every single Prairie Ridge production while she has been in attendance. Sherlock Holmes was her twelfth production (at Prairie Ridge), but it won’t be her last. Next year she will be attending Depaul University to major in Vocal Performance in Opera - you may have seen her in action at this year’s PRAC where she sang opera as her talent. Her ultimate goal/dream is to be “Christine Daae from Phantom of the Opera, or Antonia from the opera, The Tales of Hoffmann,” both of which are formidable goals, but there is no one better to chase them. Despite her career goals however, Margaret still likes to just be a teenager; be it listening to Ingrid Michaelson and Zee Avi or hanging out with her boyfriend of three years, Nick MacDonald. When asked how she does it all without going insane, she laughs it off, “I think being involved in a lot of things actually helps your time management skills because you have to plan out what you do more. So it wasn’t too bad, just a lot of hard work.” Margaret is a triple threat though: on top of her academic and vocal talent, she sports a natural talent: red hair. “There’s the classic [ginger joke] of when it’s cold outside, people put their hands on my head ‘to keep warm.’” The combination makes it a sure thing that graduation will not be the last stage for Margaret, and salutatorian most certainly not the last award she receives.

Senior Awards BSP Memorial Scholarship Award Mr. and Mrs. Powell
The Brayden Spencer Powell Memorial Scholarship was formed to keep the memory of our son alive while helping Prairie Ridge High School seniors make college more affordable. Our first born son passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in the fall of 2007. Supporters of Brayden’s scholarship gather together each summer to participate in a golf outing and auction at Prairie Isle Golf Club. The success of last year’s event, in addition to some incredible support from the senior project’s 5K run and the student council’s “teacher gift” donation, allowed us to award $30,000 in scholarships this year! Thank you so much to anyone who helped to promote these events or participated in them. We have been completely overwhelmed with the love and support over the history of this scholarship, but especially this past spring because all of those aforementioned fundraisers were ideas from the students at our school. They are great kids, and we appreciate their thoughtfulness very much. To be eligible for the scholarship a student must have been nominated by a faculty member at PR. We asked the faculty to nominate students that were extremely hard working and could benefit financially from the scholarship. Many deserving students were nominated, and they should feel honored. We are so proud of all of the nominated students and are thankful to them for carrying on the memory of Brayden in a positive manner. We are proud to announce that this year’s winners are James Davis-Olander (Western Illinois University), Katarina Jensen (McHenry County College), Anten Johnson (North Dakota State University), Dimitri Malouhos (McHenry County College), Nicole Sessler (McHenry County College), and Heather Zimmerman (McHenry County College). We invite you to please visit the website in memory of our boy at www.bspgolfouting.com. We have details on the outing, Brayden’s story, many pictures, and information on all of our scholarship winners past and present. Since the inception of this scholarship we have now helped 24 students with $113,500 worth of scholarships. We invite you to help us fundraise for the next scholarship by attending the 6th Annual Brayden Spencer Powell Memorial Golf Outing and Dinner/Auction on July 12, 2013.

Thank you and Good Luck to . . . Mr. Humpa, Principal Neil Pretkelis
Paul Humpa, the principal at Prairie Ridge High School for twelve years is now stepping down to work at Crystal Lake Central, where he started his District 155 career in education as a math teacher. Like most students in high school, Mr. Humpa found himself feeling indecisive. “When I went to college I was really unsure what I wanted to do.” However he found out he wanted to teach when he realized he was always “helping out [his] classmates with math” and enjoyed the “good feeling from helping somebody understand something.” He realized that “teaching just matched my passion.” Now Mr. Humpa is going back to the classroom. “I’m really excited to try some of the new technologies and try some of the new instructional strategies that quite frankly I’ve asked our staff to do, but I’ve never tried myself.” Describing his time as principal, Mr. Humpa said, “I was part of something very special. There were a lot of us who worked together to create a place that is a very special, high-achieving and fun place to learn.” Speaking of fun, seniors are sharing their embarrassing moments in the newspaper and so Wolf Prints asked Mr. Humpa for his. Students might remember this, actually. Right before winter break this year he was on the intercom making an announcement. Mr. Humpa recalled, “It was one of those days where my brain and mouth were not connected, and I wished everybody a great spring break in December.” When asked what his favorite memories are of this school, Mr. Humpa said that he had too many! However, he always loves graduation. “Graduation is a special day for seniors, so it’s always nice to send more than four hundred students out on their journey. That’s fun.” Unfortunately Mr. Humpa himself is graduating in a way from Prairie Ridge High School with the seniors of 2013. All of the staff and students will miss him dearly. “It’s a wonderful place, and it has been a part of my life for twelve years,” Mr. Humpa said. “It will be hard to walk out the door.”
Here Since the Beginning: Mr. Lueck and Mrs. Forman John Williams
As the school year comes to a close, the members of the senior class of 2013 will not be the only ones leaving Prairie Ridge. We will also be saying good-bye to some retiring staff members who have both been with PR since it opened in 1996. Mr. Lueck is the head of the industrial technology and business departments. Mrs. Forman is part of Prairie Ridge’s special education department. Mr. Lueck has decided to retire this year from Prairie Ridge High School. The industrial technology department will never be the same without him. Mr. Lueck’s career goes back beyond D155, and it has occupied him for the last 42 ½ years of his life. About half of that time (26 years) has been spent in our district. He has taught in every school within the district, and Mr. Lueck was, in fact, a founding member of the faculty when PR was established 17 years ago. Before he taught in our district he taught in Wisconsin, 9 ½ years at Big Foot H.S. in Walworth and 7 years at Wilmot H.S. As the head of both the industrial technology department and the business department, a lot of what he does is behind the scenes, but very necessary in order to have the departments run smoothly. “I am responsible for budgeting, supervision of my department members, curriculum development, setting yearly goals for both departments and dealing with all the ‘problems’ that usually come up during the school year,” he explained. His love of industrial technology goes back to his own high school days. “I always wanted to be an auto mechanic but being on the college track in high school, I only had time to take one shop class. Of course I chose auto (this was in my junior year). Although my teacher never talked to me about teaching, there was something that wanted me to become a teacher.” Now that Mr. Lueck is retiring some of his plans include, “doing all the little projects around both my house and my daughter’s house that I have neglected to do all these years.” He also cares very much for all his students and wants them to remember that he “wishes them success in the future.” The greatest thing that happens to Mr. Lueck “is when a former student comes up to me and tells me about his or her family, what they are doing and thanks me for being their teacher.” Classes like Woods, Small Engines and Autos will not be the same without you. Thank you Mr. Lueck for all your years of service and good luck to you in the future. Mrs. Forman has decided also to retire at the end of the year from Prairie Ridge High School. Like Mr. Lueck, Marilyn Forman has also been with PR since the beginning in 1997. Before coming to PR, she worked at Cary-Grove for 12 years. As a special education paraprofessional, so much of what Mrs. Forman does is incredibly vital to the well-being of students going through high school. “[I] work with students in the SELFProgram and the LR Dept. I assist the teacher in the classroom, sometimes work one-on-one with a student, help students with their classroom assignments, encourage students to stay on task, make sure their work is turned in on time and with missing assignments, help them to stay organized, and to be the go-to person when our students needs anything, academically or when they just need to talk with someone. Candy is also provided at my desk for an added treat.” How she got to where she is today is a remarkable story. “I was hired as an aid in the EM Program at Cary Grove High School twenty eight years ago to replace Judy Swett as she returned to school to obtain her teaching degree. Two years later, Judy Swett returned to Cary Grove as the teacher and I became her aid. When Prairie Ridge High School opened up we moved over here together and started up the Focus Program (which is now called SELF) and have been together ever since, for twenty-five years. We definitely made a good team.” Now that this chapter of her life is coming to a close, a new chapter can begin with exciting possibilities. “My plans after I retire will consist of spending more time with my family and friends, being able to attend all of my grandkids’ sports activities, traveling here in the U.S. and hopefully touring Europe.” You will be leaving an indelible mark on this school. Thank you, Marilyn Forman, for all your years of service and good luck to you in your new chapter ahead.
Be glad for them in the new exciting future that lies ahead, for Shakespeare once said, “a door is not merely an exit, but also an entrance.”

Don’t waste your time thinking about what everyone will think. Do what you want, make friends with everyone, and enjoy every second of it. The thing I will miss most about high school is seeing all the faces every day. Besides at the reunion, I won’t see most of these people again. Also the teachersI believe I will never have a better group of teachers in my life, and they have made learning the best experience these four years. Next year I’ll be attending the University of Indianapolis playing soccer. I hope to be remembered as an athletic, laidback girl who likes to have fun and laugh.

Senior Reflections Within My Memory Hannah Newman
Fake It As I Go Mark Walters
I still remember how nervous I was getting off the bus that first day of school my freshman year. I was so worried I wouldn’t know my way around the school and get lost, and, of course, by third period I got totally turned around and completely lost! Were it not for the guidance of one of the janitors I might still be wandering the halls. Thankfully I no longer get lost in the hallways. These days I am a little wiser, a little taller and I can walk the halls of Prairie Ridge with a blindfold on. However, the most important changes have occurred within me. Only upon realizing the few remaining weeks that I have at Prairie Ridge did I understand the total effect of my high school years. I will think back and smile as I admit that my teachers really were right about the importance of doing your homework on time. I will always remember those who passed on important advice or helped me discover who I am. I will forever be grateful to Mr. Low for helping me discover my love for engineering. I never would have thought that Mr. Cummins’ Photos class would help me see the world a little differently, but it did. The library became a home away from home for me, and the librarians will always have a special place in my heart. And thanks to the horrifyingly graphic videos they showed in Drivers Ed, I will never, ever, ever consider getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated or texting while I drive. I discovered that mythology is wicked cool with the help of Mr. Boldwyn, and that my classmates could be accepting, understanding, and kind.
There isn’t too much I need to say. I’m leaving for college next year, I’m starting a new life, and I’m ready to take on every new challenge. Has Prairie Ridge prepared me? I don’t think so, but I think that’s what makes it all so exciting. I don’t exactly know what is going to happen next and I’m going to have to fake it as I go – something I’m getting better at. PR has done some good for me though. It provided me with caring teachers and character building after school and in school activities that shaped me into a new and improved person (as opposed to who I was four years ago). Newspaper was always something I did as a side activity, and hopefully I’ll be remembered as the kid that never once attended a morning meeting and when they saw an article of mine they thought: Who’s that? The music department also treated me well and in more ways than I can even begin to mention. I think collectively I’ve laughed more during musical season, every choir period, and every day in AP Theory than in my whole life so far. Every person and thing that made an impact on me these last four years made this a great experience. However now I’m moving on to an even greater experience at North Park University. If you’re reading this and believe you have made an impact on me, good or bad, thank you so much because no matter what has happened to me in the last four years, it molded me into what I am now. I’m not 100% sure what that is yet, but it’ll come in due time.
Play Your Best Hand
In the Blink of an Eye
You might have read before in other senior reflections “my advice to you is,” “what my time in PR was/meant to me,” or “my most memorable moments.” Don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m not going to write my reflection that way. The truth is, it’s not about me. And it seems odd to say “it’s not about me” in a reflection piece, a piece solely based on the individual’s thoughts on anything, in this case, a high school career. Yet, a point should be made that while you should take care of yourself and feel free to enjoy your life as you see fit, you don’t need to be told how you should enjoy your life or high school career, nor should anyone rightly, definitively, tell you. In most cases you’ll probably know what is or is not for you. Even when you read someone’s advice, you’re not going to follow someone else’s advice because they told you to; you’re going to follow their advice because you WANT to. If your well being is better off by disregarding this article, go ahead. So does this mean that you should only do what you want and to heck with everyone else? Yes and no, because life goes beyond you or me, the individual, the system, school, friends, and so on. What the individual does affects not only his or herself, it affects and reflects on people around you who are loosely connected to your school career, say, for example, the district administrator. Whatever decision you make, it’s going to affect the world or system around you. A good or bad grade reflects on your teacher. How you interact with other people could affect how they feel that day. If you act like a jerk, that could ruin their day. Almost every act a person commits, good or bad, has some effect. This can go beyond high school. If you get caught with drugs or have a DUI that does not affect just high school life; that affects your life going forward. So when going through high school, do what feels right but also have some foresight for others around you and your future. High school and perhaps even life can be compared to a game of poker. You’re playing the best hand you have, but you’re also playing poker with the other people at the table. It is in the best interest of the “system” to play for more than just your set of goals. Play so others can enjoy the game too. Sometimes it’s not just about the good memories you had, but about the good memories you helped to create for others.
My first day of freshman year started with first hour, Beginning Treble Choir. It was in that class that Mr. Jensen said to us: four years from now may seem far away, but blink, and you’ll be getting ready to graduate. Well, I guess I blinked. It is a bittersweet time of my life, and high school is drawing to a close. Over the past four years, I have been incredibly busy. Each and every class, group project, rehearsal, and team has played a role in creating my high school experience and shaping me into who I am today. I have learned so much more than just gas laws, Bacon’s rebellion, and symbolism in The Scarlet Letter. Time management, problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are the true hallmarks of the knowledge I have accrued. People sometimes ask me what I would do differently if I could do high school over or what I wish I had done. To that I say, nothing. I have no regrets and I know that everything happens for a reason. I’m right where I’m meant to be. To my fellow class of 2013 and to the classes that will follow, I encourage you to live with the same mindset. In all you do, search for ways that you can better your character, learn from those who surround you, and serve others. Have a purpose. Show gratitude. Dream. Be self-motivated. Share ideas. Appreciate beauty. Give hugs. Laugh at yourself. Join choir. Enjoy life to the fullest. Remember that high school is not a destination. It is a place to take risks, make mistakes, learn, and grow before moving on to the next step in time. For me, the next step is to go off into the wild blue yonder, but I will always remember the friends who have influenced me, the teachers who have mentored me, and the lessons that have benefited me during my season at Prairie Ridge. Teachers, I am not only grateful to you for your efforts to help me achieve my goals, but for investing time and energy into helping me to improve as a student and as a person. I hope to someday use the skills I have developed and the insight I have gained throughout high school to impact others as you have. Seniors, this chapter of our lives is ending, but a new one is about to be written. We will cherish the special memories we have made, but it is time for a change. The time has come, and we are ready. It truly came in the blink of an eye. I wish all of you the best throughout high school and beyond. God bless!
