PROM Seniors You Should Know Favorites & Memories Next Year
Senior Project
District 47 Game Day by Erin Wagner
Besides the District 47 Game Day, senior project activities included Breakfast with Santa, a food drive for the Crystal Lake Food Pantry, a toy drive for Toys for Tots, and the 5K to benefit the Brayden Spencer Powell Memorial Scholarship.
This past month on April 9th the senior class of 2014 invited local special needs children to a morning of fun and games. The D47 Game Day has become a tradition among the senior classes at Prairie Ridge, with this year’s game day the 4th annual. Participating seniors led the children through games like basketball, volleyball, and baggo, but many had fun just being pulled around on scooters. Senior Project sponsor Mrs. Buck called this year’s event a “huge success.” She hopes that the participating seniors will “remember this day for years to come.” As the morning of energy and excitement came to a close, the seniors in attendance could be seen with smiles across their faces. Many simply didn’t want the morning to end. Senior Ashley Duda called the experience “rewarding...and fun to see all the kids enjoying themselves.” Hopefully future senior classes will continue this now special tradition. Though it is a tiring morning, nothing can compare to the sight of a happy child being pulled around on a scooter for an hour.

Seniors You Should Know Anita Venkataswamy, Salutatorian
Fatima Khan, Valedictorian
When one hears the name “Anita Venkataswamy,” he or she may automatically correlate the name with great grades and a passion for learning. No wonder, either. Through her four years at Prairie Ridge, Anita worked hard, and her efforts definitely show. Anita Venkataswamy is Prairie Ridge High School Class of 2014’s Salutatorian. Don’t let the title fool you thoughthere is much more to Anita than her grades. A hard worker, Anita shows her wide array of talents through many extracurricular activities. Not only is she Vice President of German Club, Treasurer of National Honor Society, a member of German National Honor Society and the school newspaper, and a diligent worker on props crew and in the musical, Anita is also a talented pianist and dancer. A testament to the dedication rooted within Anita, for the past twelve years she has studied Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance. This dance not only provides a fun release from school for Anita, but it also has “taught [her] a lot about perseverance and hard work [and] kept [her] rooted to the Indian culture.” Anita’s hard work and perseverance through the trials we all face in high school have shaped her into a mold for success in college. Anita plans to attend Case Western Reserve University and study biomedical engineering. In her upcoming years at the university, Anita plans to put her strong mind to use as she participates in undergraduate research within the biomedical field. Above all her achievements, Anita’s remarkably humble nature is a shining feature of her delightful personality. The salutatorian title was never her goal; she only aimed for four years of giving her best academic efforts. However, when considering this title, Anita explains that it “represents all the hard work that I have put into school. It’s an honor. There are so many students who are so intelligent and who work extremely hard, but it just so happened that I got the rank.” Anita’s positive attitude and dedication will take her far in life, and Prairie Ridge wishes her all the best with whatever path she may take in the future.
A scholar, an athlete, the epitome of success, Fatima Khan proves that hard work and dedication will bring opportunities impossible to those lacking in her extreme desire. As the Class of 2014’s Valedictorian, Fatima exemplifies all of the possibilities Prairie Ridge has to offer. Obviously, Fatima is not the average student, but her deeply intellectual nature has led her to the title she holds today. While many students study simply for good grades, Fatima connects her findings in one class to those in another, creating a class work symbiosis that has helped her become the learning powerhouse we see her as today. In fact, unlike most students who find studying labor intensive and dull, Fatima believes that “studying and enjoyment aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.” The passion she has for school is enviable, and the resulting success downright covetable. While one may think that Fatima arrived to Prairie Ridge with intentions of earning the title of valedictorian, this was never her primary goal. Fatima realized her potential for this astounding achievement freshman year, when she learned she was ranked second in her class. With her determination and drive, Fatima kept her grades high and her goals higher, moving up to the top spot her senior year. The workload Fatima has succeeded in managing, along with her intelligence, has earned her a spot at the prestigious University of Chicago. While the rest of us remain in awe, Fatima herself is coming to terms with this astonishing achievement. “I still can’t believe it’s happening!” While at the university, Fatima intends to study a science such as chemistry or neuroscience on the pre-med track, while minoring in Spanish. To continue along the pathway of opportunity Fatima has forged for herself, she plans to involve herself in plenty of research and study abroad. Fatima spent the past four years perfecting the role of a dedicated, motivated, highly intelligent student. For this reason Prairie Ridge is proud to name her valedictorian for the Class of 2014.

Seniors You Should Know
These four years at high school have shown me that what I will miss most is the friends I made here. The people I have known have defined who I am and have taught me so much about how to live my life. I wish to stay connected with them throughout my life, and want to say best of luck to them for their futures, and thank you for being in my life. ~ Tanishq Dubey
I am most proud of how much I’ve grown as a person. I feel like my friends and my teachers have influenced me to act better in my day-today life over the last four years, and I am very grateful for that. ~ Michael Lucchese
My best memory at PR was definitely the 2013 Homecoming Pep Rally. I had so much fun participating in Guy Poms with friends and being the Master of Ceremonies with Connor Sullivan. Getting pied in the face by Erica Walsh was easily the icing on the cake. ~ Tanner Danek
My best memory of PR would honestly be the day Mrs. Boddy told us the story of the roller coster noise. I have never laughed so hard in my life, and I will never forget it. ~ Sam Moore

I am most proud of my participation in Madrigals! I worked so incredibly hard and pretty much dedicated my high school career to it. It’s my life! I have made so many good friends and wonderful memories just by being in three different groups. I wouldn’t change a thing; I loved every moment and am so grateful for the opportunity. ~ Lili Schiller

Mr. Lemoine: From CG to PR and Back Again by Claire Pipia and Anita Venkataswamy
No more scary knocks on your classroom door from Prairie Ridge’s tallest staff member. After his ten years of dedicated service as a dean, Mr. Lemoine will be leaving Prairie Ridge to return to CaryGrove, where he taught math for eleven years before he became a dean here. He explained how his interest in serving as the dean stemmed from his desire to know students on a different level. “At the time, I was looking for a new challenge,” he described. What has he liked about being a dean? “I enjoyed the freedom of being able to walk around and getting to know kids more intimately,” he reflected. “There are things you don’t always get to know as a teacher--their hopes, their dreams, their life outside of PR.” When asked what he struggled with when working at Prairie Ridge High School, he responded, “Watching kids fall. How far do you let them fall before you catch them?” Mr. LeMoine’s intention was never to play “gotcha.” He was just trying to help students be who they really are. He never saw pulling students out of class as a punishment. He saw it as an opportunity to help them grow and mature into better people. As much as Mr. LeMoine has positively impacted the students’ lives, they have also impacted him, and he has learned much from his experience. “I learned that there’s usually a reason why students behave the way they behave. You need to figure it out before you help them change their behavior,” he explained. Looking back on his experience at PR, there are many things that Mr. Lemoine will sorely miss, one of which he states are the people. “We have amazing students, teachers, and support staff,” he expressed. “I’m going to miss popping into class, joking around with the teachers and students, and watching the football games and the musicals.” Despite his sadness at leaving PR, Mr. Lemoine says he has the “itch to be back in the classroom.” As dean this year Mr.LeMoine completed fourteen teacher evaluations, and sitting in the classrooms showed him how much the teaching system has changed and how much he has missed teaching. “I’m looking forward to getting back to what I loved and just having fun with the kids in the class,” he explained. Unlike with the role of dean, “There’s more of a comradery with teaching.” As Mr. LeMoine leaves PR, he gives a few words of advice to the class of 2014. “Take ownership of your future,” he encourages. “Find a dream, and go for it.”
DEAR SENIORS, When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. - Lao Tzu (and Mr. Mason) Your brain is no different than a farmer’s fertile field. You get to choose what type of seeds you want to grow, and eventually the crop you will harvest. ~ Mrs. MacDonald
Go to Class. Call your Mom. Make New Friends. ~ Mrs. Treadwell
Chase your dreams Burst out at the seams Never stop trying Never stop learning Life life to the fullest Give it nothing but your best ~ Mrs. Buck
Whatever you do, respect yourself enough to do it well! Keep in touch! ~ Mrs. Boddy “The greatest danger for most of us is not that our If it is too good aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too to be true, low and we reach it.” it probably is. - Michelangelo ~ Mr. Bleile Set your sights high, seniors! ~ Mrs. Steiner “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” Confucius (and Mrs. Swett)
Take advantage of opportunities, study abroad, maintain a hobby or workout to get you through stressful times, and find a career you can be passionate about every day! And remember Physics is always Phun! ~ Ms. Glover

It can be absolutely anything, from doing a sport, joining a club, volunteering, or getting involved in the fine arts. You might discover that you really love it. - Sarah Jepsen

Seniors You Should Know
I hope to be remembered as someone that was always good for a laugh and could be counted on no matter what. ~ Ben Mack
My junior year, I was chosen to be in the Tug-of-War competition during the Homecoming Pep Assembly. I was the anchor, and thought it would be a good idea to sit down. It was a good idea, except for the fact that my butt hung out for the entire school to see. ~ Max Kipp Wolf Prints has the video! Search for “Homecoming Tug of War” at PRWolfPrints.com
Want more embarrassing moments? Turn to p. 23. I loved Homecoming each year. Going with my friends was so much fun. The parade and block party before made it even better. I will miss going to the sporting events at PR and supporting my friends. ~ Lydia Ceglarski
My best memory at PR would have to be my senior year of basketball. We made a great run and ended up winning regionals. Also I made it to state for the three point contest. ~ Sarah Le Beau 12 | Prairie Ridge High School
I was part of a drum line called the All Star Strikers. It is made up of percussionists from many different high schools. This drum line is for high school students only so it is something that I will truly miss upon graduation. I’ll miss the friends I made and of course the performing! ~ Joe LeBreck
Turn to p. 20 for more memories.
Seniors You Should Know My best memory at PR was definitely attending the football games and being part of the super fan section. There’s something about chanting encouraging phrases at the football team that makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger than just a high school. ~ Sandra Ebirim
I will miss the most the Drama Department. For four years I have practically lived my life in that program and I couldn’t have asked for a better family and the amazing memories I created there. ~ Marissa Gabel
I hope to be remembered as a student who always gave their best effort even if I failed. I’ve had my fair share of tough days, whether it was dropping out of a bad race in cross country or getting a bad test grade. As I’ve grown I’ve learned to cope with tough days, and understand that it is a part of growing up. We learn from the mistakes we’ve made. In the end, it doesn’t matter that I failed. What mattered was that I got back up and kept going even if I didn’t want to. The experience of failing and remembering that pain was what pushed me to succeed above and beyond later. ~ Erin Wagner
Next year I hope to successfully learn how to live more on my own, learn how to manage all that free time in college, make new friends while still keeping old connections, working, and continuing to work on certifications with my pilot’s license. ~ Brandon Kuhn
I’m really proud of the fact that I got into things that I always thought were the opposite of who I was as a person. I never saw myself in choir but joining it opened a new world to me of options, friendships, experiences, and talents that I didn’t think I had. I wouldn’t trade my 4 years in it for the world. ~ Brandon Fritchley

Next year I hope to be successfully getting the hang of college and being a good student. At the same time, I want to have fun and enjoy the whole new experience of being independent and away at school. I’ll be working on becoming a nurse. I’m excited to start that! I will also be involved with the Army ROTC, so I hope I can handle everything at one time. ~ Rosie Ridge

Senior Reflections Keep Learning
by Anita Venkataswamy During my first few weeks as a freshman, I wandered the halls of this huge three-story labyrinth, with confusing twists and turns at every corner. I felt so overwhelmed, lost in a sea of unfamiliar faces. Now, the hallways of Prairie Ridge are like my second home; I can navigate them with much ease, and when the time comes, I will be sad to leave them. While I have learned about electron affinity and the motifs in Crime and Punishment, these four years at high school have certainly taught me much
more than subject materials. The teachers here have taught me about dedication. From the countless hours Mr. Seiler spent answering my chemistry questions to Ms. Glover’s extra physics help sessions on Saturdays, I have learned the importance of finding a passion and pursuing it. Their enthusiasm for their jobs inspires me to find something that I will love to do as well, for I see how much it positively impacts them and those around them. In addition, several of the teachers here have pushed me to apply my knowledge to the real world. Now, whenever I watch snow falling outside my window, I think of calculus, speculating the rate at which the snow falls and the rate at which the snow is plowed. When I use the internet or text message my friend on my cell phone, I ponder whether these technologies would have existed without the Cold War. My extracurriculars, too, have helped me grow. I’ve learned how to time-manage, I’ve developed different interests, and I’ve connected to so many different types of people. Through Newspaper Club, I’ve seen myself become more confident in approaching other people as I conducted more interviews. Through the musical, I’ve learned so much about teamwork and the importance of helping one another in order to achieve a common goal. As I finally leave the halls of Prairie Ridge, I will carry several invaluable memories, experiences, and lessons with me. While I am nervous and sad to leave, at the same time, I’m extremely excited to take a giant leap from a three-story building to a university campus. I know that I will be lost amidst the strange faces and the unfamiliar pathways of the campus, just as I was four years ago. Yet, from my experiences at PR, I know that although the future is uncertain, I will gain much valuable insight for my years ahead. I will keep learning.

Geodes from Tsunamis by Alena Hansen
Last week, I met myself. It was not actually me but a guy in my grade whose high school experience was identical to mine. We had the same tsunami of health problems, which essentially drowned the last four years for us. I spent those four years desperate for someone who could empathize with my situation. For so long, I yearned for someone to talk to. But not having anyone who understood forced me to become my biggest supporter. I got myself through the tsunami and know I always will have strong self-efficacy through whatever challenge comes my way. Like me, most of the senior class experienced a rite of passage during the last four years. Whether their parents got divorced or someone passed away or someone lost their job, it seems like we all have come to the same conclusion: we are not kids anymore. Suddenly, the ugly in the world is more apparent. As we become older, smarter, and take on more responsibilities, we become more aware of the problems around us. This gives us the ability to fix them. When the tsunami first hit freshman year, it consumed every aspect of my life. It was hard to figure out who I was when I was just “the sick girl” to everyone. When I would be asked to describe myself upon meeting new people, my illness was always what I thought of first. It was the biggest part of me. And I hated it. So I forced myself to pretend that part of me was not there. Forced to focus on my interests, values, and decisions, I gained a strong sense of who I am. I noticed most people let themselves be defined by their social class, a tragedy that struck, or a part of their environment. Challenges such as the ones my double and I faced force you to make hard decisions and figure out your priorities. A rite of passage is not a part of your personality, but it can help expose who you are. A friend of mine summed this up nicely in a paradox--people are like geodes: when they break, you see what they are made of. A rite of passage is a true test of character. The challenges from our past and the challenges in our future are opportunities to find out who we are and what is important to us, giving our lives direction and meaning.
