YEAR OF THE SUPERFAN

Seniors You Should Know Megan Effinger, Salutatorian by BreAnne Fleer

She’s creative, determined, and family-oriented. She’s also the 2015 Salutatorian. She’s Megan Effinger.

Aaditya Rawal, Valedictorian by BreAnne Fleer

The 2015 Valedictorian Aaditya Rawal, self-described as “sarcastic, funny, helpful, and tall” explains that his title is a “nice added bonus” to his already robust high school career.

“It’s made me appreciate the opportunities I have at PR,” Megan says of her title. Megan certainly did take advantage of those opportunities, participating in marching band, jazz band, madrigals, German club and German NHS, set building, plays, math team, scholastic bowl, and pep band.

It doesn’t take much to see why Aaditya deserves this award. Throughout his time at Prairie Ridge, Aaditya was involved in marching band, scholastic bowl, speech team, math team, WYSE, French club and French NHS, varsity tennis, and sound crew for the fall play. In addition to his outside activities, Aaditya says he “enjoys sports--either playing or watching them.”

AP Computer Science and AP U.S. History were her favorite classes. On the side, Megan loves music, especially playing the piano and the saxophone and singing. You can find her doing arts and crafts projects or running, two activities she says she enjoys during her free time. Megan’s secret to success was to “always try to best myself.” “I’m very competitive,” she explains. It’s no wonder she made it so far. The most challenging part of becoming salutatorian, Megan says, was the “lack of sleep.” However, Megan never shied away from activities because she thought she couldn’t do them. “Don’t not do something because you think you don’t have time,” Megan advises. “As you get older, you realize you can make time for everything you want to do.” Next year, Megan will attend the University of Minnesota at Duluth, aiming to become a software engineer. As for her career, Megan says, “I’m constantly changing my mind because it’s hard to pick something I’m going to do for the rest of my life.”

His favorite classes were AP U.S. History and AP Psychology. “For tough tests,” he notes, he would wear “a red polo shirt and khaki pants” as a good luck charm. Despite the intensity of his academics and extracurriculars, Aaditya says that his secret to success was “being involved in a lot of different ways,” which kept him busy. That way, he explains, “I couldn’t procrastinate.” To Aaditya, the most challenging aspect of earning the recognition of being first in his class was not the myriad of activities he participated in, but “trying to keep up with the expectations that came along with it.” In the fall, Aaditya will attend the University of Chicago, where he will major in molecular engineering. “I’m pretty confident,” Aaditya explains about his future. “For the most part, it’s going to work out.” Aaditya’s advice for underclassmen is to choose fun activities that interest you. “Don’t do it because others tell you to,” he says. “Keep yourselves busy and do stuff you enjoy.”

Sit with the kid sitting alone in the lunch room or commons. You

don’t understand how much that can change things. - Hannah Ferree Ignore what people say about you because at the end of these four years, all that really matters is how you see yourself. and join different clubs and activities to keep you going. Jasminique Brooks If you’re going to bed before midnight, you’re not trying hard enough (or too hard) - Megan Effinger One F on a test will not make or break you, but don’t make it a habit. Advice to Underclassmen

Don’t limit yourself. Don’t put a cap on how much homework you do. Go above and beyond. Trust me; it pays off. Make time for friends. Oh, and don’t forget to have fun! - Abbie Keck Don’t be afraid to be yourself. There is a group for any kind of person at PR, so don’t be discouraged if you feel like you don’t belong in the very beginning. Put yourself out there, and you will find a great group that will help you discover yourself. - Emma Porter Try to get to know as many people as you can; be nice to everyone and try to make as many friends as you can! - Haley Glenn Take as many “fun” classes as you can like Foods or Child Development. Emma O’Brien Don’t be friends with people who: never ask how you’re doing, brag about a fun time they had without you, or make “jokes” about your insecurities - Joan Alcazar Savor what you have left of high school and if you think you might want to try something new then do it! - Megan Orr Be everyone’s friend. Don’t let anyone have anything bad to say about you because that’s what people will remember. - Meg Gordon Take classes that interest you. If you are required to take a class, make it interest you. - Noah Mathes Choose classes that you really think you’ll enjoy. - Jada Berkland Take classes you are interested in and would enjoy, step out of your comfort zone, and work hard. - Riley Corcoran Try hard freshman year and get involved in sports and go to the football and basketball games. - Brett Stevens Run more - Scott Hearne Don’t give up and enjoy your senior year - Gabrielle Perruzzi Sometimes, the right thing to do is to skip that homework assignment and spend time with people that you love. At the end of the day, it’s all a balance. Get good grades, but make good memories too. And join choir. I don’t care if you can’t sing, just do it. - Tatiana Schaffer Don’t let school stress you out - Shannon Freund Do not procrastinate and try hard every year because it will help a lot in the future. - Krysta Doroba Life is too short, so try not to stress over the little things that happen. - Brittany Palella Don’t stress about one or two bad grades in a class. You will still get into college. Also, form relationships with your teachers; they are really cool people and have a lot of good advice. - Josie Anderson Have fun in high school - Nick Citrano Get in the habit of doing homework and studying as early as you can. - Tiffany Zwicky Don’t wish your high school years away; it goes by way too fast so enjoy it while you can. - Morgan Oberbroeckling Stay classy. - Samantha Chapnick AP classes are definitely overrated. - John DiCecco

8 | Prairie Ridge High School

Try new things that interest you like choir, band, taking an art class, joining clubs. - Alicia Komes

Take marketing, go to every football game, join the golf team - Ryan Hickey Work hard now so you can kick your feet up and lean back in a few years - Riley Tonkin Keep school and work and your private life separate. It makes everything easier - Natalie Pergler You only get one chance to do high school. Do work that you can be proud of, realize the value of your education, have fun, be great to each other, and enjoy it while it lasts because before you know it you’ll be hearing your name called up to walk the stage at graduation. - John Lardino Save as much money as you can and do not bite off more than you can chew your senior year. Join choir. - Elizabeth Evan Do what you want. As you progress through your years in high school, grow more and more out of your shell and put yourself out of your comfort zone, because that not only makes you a super cool and interesting person, but also prepares you for life ahead! - Mitch Stengel Don’t act like you’re better than anyone, and give everyone a chance - Ewa Robak Don’t be afraid to try new and challenging things like AP or a new skill; now is the time to discover yourself! - Hannah Stiff

Be involved in as many extracurriculars/activities as possible! You’ll make so many more friends and learn to not procrastinate

(too much). - Aaditya Rawal Keep all of your notes for finals! - Kirsten Barton Relax. Take it easy. Bad test grades don’t constitute bad people; you’ll be fine. Ashley Malkinski Something that seemed to matter so much your freshman year will be nothing but a funny memory your senior year. Take a step back and realize how little time you truly have and try to focus on making the best of it because high school is a tiny fraction of your life. Things might seem impossible at times but you have to keep pushing through. - Kelly Statter Enjoy high school. I spent too much time worrying and being sad. This is it kids. One day during senior year it’s gonna hit you that you’re done. It’s over. You’re leaving in a few months and then you’re on your own. Get out there and do something you’ll look back on when you’re old and smile about. - Alex Lewandowski Get involved to make friends from other groups - Ashtynn Trauth Take challenging classes - Jackson Marwitz

Just Get Involved!

“I exist as I am, that is enough” (Whitman). - Chris Berg High school sucks but you will make it through. - Casey Thorpe Do what makes you happy and never allow someone to take that happiness from you. Be kind to everyone. Be grateful for everything in your life. If you’re having a bad day, go to the guidance office; Mrs. Berg has saved me countless times. Always remember all of the many people who care about you. If I survived high school, you can too. - Lanie Briggs Don’t give up no matter how difficult it gets. - Matt Koenig Don’t stress...it’s just high school; have fun with it. - Ben Cilano Take hard classes, but stay within your limit. Seniors You Should Know

Making Mr. Cummins laugh so hard he started to cry is my best memory. There’s some odd sort of satisfaction in making someone so stoic crack. – Emma Porter

Next year I will be attending MCC and will be applying to the Disney College Program. I’ll still be living at home but I hope to someday work in the Disney Parks, or at least for the Disney Company. – Cassie Koch

I am proud to be friends with so many amazing individuals. Over these past four years, I have gotten to know some of the most creative, most hilarious, most intellectual kids in the 815. I am proud of all that my peers have done for the world; I am grateful for the way my friends have shared their talents. I probably sound like a mom by now, but nothing makes me happier than seeing the people I love do great things. – Haley Glenn

I hope for a new beginning, but to never forget the lessons that I learned to get there. College is an exciting and terrifying opportunity for me, and I know that PR has prepared me to succeed as I pursue my degree in engineering. – Brett Collar

My best memory at Prairie Ridge was during my Junior year musical: The Drowsy Chaperone. I was a reporter and in the patriotic chorus, and so I didn’t have the biggest role, but how many lines I had wasn’t important to me. I just loved sitting in the tunnel right before the show; hearing the tuning of the instruments reminded me that I was about to be a part of something bigger than me and that brought people joy. - Meg Gordon

Seniors You Should Know

The best memory by far is when we won the High School State Gymnastics competition for a great senior year finish! – Jada Berkland

My favorite memory with Prairie Ridge was my first Chinese field trip to Chinatown. We learned about the history of Chinatown and had an authentic Chinese meal. We also had time to explore the area, during which I purchased a turtle that I had to smuggle back. – Nigel Ticknor

I am most proud of playing three sports all four years. Playing in every season took up a lot of time and effort, but I am really glad that I was able to stick with it until the end. – Erin Wing

I hope my many video projects will live on forever and inspire students of the future. Making videos have been the most frustrating, rewarding, and fun times in high school. – Ryan Kowalkowski

My best memory would have to be all of my teachers. Every single teacher I had (and yes I do mean ALL of them) actually cared about you as a person, and took time to help when you needed it. You weren’t just a seat-filler in the class, you were an individual. That has to be my favorite thing about this school. Everyone here is so caring and it really made high school manageable, even through the tough times. So thank you to all of my teachers and thank you to the staff who didn’t even have me in class but still cared. – Leeza Trainor, pictured with her newborn niece Wolf Prints May 2015 | 21
