WELCOME TO ACCOUNTEX
These two pages contain a range of hints and tips to help you get maximum value from the time you spend at Accountex 2013. Whether you attended last year’s Accountex in November, or this is your first time, you’ll find plenty of new exhibitors and speakers at this show. One thing’s for sure: you won’t be bored! I know it often doesn’t seem very easy to book a day away from your desk, so how can you ensure that you get maximum value from your time here? Why not see who’s available to meet up by searching on twitter for #accountexmeetup. It’s a good idea to take stock, grab a coffee and look through this show guide in advance, so that you can plan your visit. Check out the location of each of the lecture theatres you hope to visit. You could leave it to chance, but if you have any favourite speakers or sessions, do make sure you arrive early, as space is limited. You’ll also want to identify some backups in case your first choice theatre is full when you arrive. You may have decided that there are some specific exhibitors you wish to visit – this guide will help you pinpoint where they are located. It will also help you identify new suppliers where you can find more information that might assist you in your practice.
MARK LEE Guest Editor
You’ll find that the exhibitors comprise a mix of your existing suppliers, their competitors and others promoting services and facilities you have yet to explore. Check out where their stands are and mark them on your copy of this guide, then check them off as you visit or when you stop for a drink later. Remember to leave time to take in those exhibits that offer something new and different. There really is so much to see and do that you’ll want to get full value from every minute. Some exhibitors will be happy to let you pick up their promotional literature; others will want to find out something about you first. Many stands will also have simple promotional giveaways that they will be happy to give you – some of these gifts may even be genuinely useful! And there are always plenty of sweets and other items to eat; all intended to give you a reason to check out a specific exhibition stand. Think of them as a reward!

Keynote Speaker: Boring Is Optional – Let’s reclaim accountancy!

www.BookMarkLee.co
Mark writes a regular blog containing loads of practical tips and insights for ambitious accountants.
In addition to the exhibitors and other visitors, you may bump into some of the speakers before or after they present their sessions. Most will be happy to stop and chat - especially if you have questions inspired by their talks, or that you hoped they would address. There’s no need to be shy, but do make sure you are polite! If you want anyone to get in touch with you after the event, make sure you have a supply of business cards to give out when asked. You should also give out your card if you know people often mishear or mispronounce your name. I’m quite lucky in this regard! It would be foolhardy to expect to ‘do’ any business while you are wandering around Accountex. But you may encounter like-minded visitors who are willing to meet up, to email or to speak on the phone next week. These initial conversations will only really be of value if you follow up promptly within the next week.

ACCOUNTEX 2013
WELCOME
The range of exhibitors Accountex 2013 contains a wider range of exhibitors than ever before. Some are well-known brands across much of the profession. This is true, for example, of the larger professional bodies, software providers, publishers and various suppliers who have been around for many years. But how familiar with them are you, really? Take a look and you may well find out something new and potentially valuable to you or your practice. You’ll also find plenty of names that you are less familiar with. They’re all here because they consider you to be a potentially interesting prospect. Some may be more suited to one type of accountancy practice than another, but all will have something to say - or share - that could be of value to you. Take a look and avoid letting your preconceptions limit your attention span. I’m sure you’ll have a stimulating time. Enjoy!
TEN TIPS TO ENSURE YOU HAVE A GOOD TIME 1.
Check out which lectures you consider to be a ‘must see’. Remember that it’s often a case of first-come, first-served.
2.
Arrive 10-15 minutes early at the popular lecture theatres to maximise the prospect of getting a seat
3.
Keep your eye on the time to avoid being side-tracked while you’re on your way to a lecture theatre
4.
Make sure you have a pen and paper, iPad or smartphone so that you can make notes during the talks
5.
Remember to make time to eat and drink during your visit – avoid getting dehydrated
6.
Locate the toilets so that you can find them easily if you are in a hurry
7.
If you pop your card in a prize draw, you can expect to receive promotional materials from the exhibitor after Accountex is over
8.
Smile at the people you meet as you wander around Accountex. It will make you feel good - and them too!
9.
You can take promotional pens, sweets and toys home for the family
10. Be open-minded when listening to the speakers and the exhibitors

PAUL DUNN
CO-FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN, B1G1 Paul Dunn started his career as one of the first 10 people in Hewlett Packard in Australia. Then came the founding of one of Australia’s first Computer Companies, followed by the Results Corporation a consultancy that served 23,000 SME clients. Paul then turned his attention to Professional Service firms and created the breakthrough Accountants’ Boot Camp process, enabling over 3,500 accounting firms and 17,000 accountants worldwide to work with their clients in new ways. Paul ‘lit up’ - if not shook up - the profession with both his presentation style and (at the time) radical ideas on how to create and run better firms. These ideas are regarded very much as standard practice now. Paul continues to push the envelope of what’s

MARK LEE Accountancy Age has suggested that Mark is, “The most networked accountant in the UK.” He’s certainly well connected on Linkedin and Twitter and through the thousands of subscribers to his weekly newsletters. Accountex visitors are invited to connect with him too – simply search online for BookMarkLee.
Too many people think accountants are boring and too many accountants reinforce this stereotype. We can’t place all the blame on that classic Monty Python sketch from 1969 - there are many other reasons why so many people think accountants are boring. And, let’s be honest, there are a fair number of boring accountants. Sadly, many don’t recognise that they are perpetuating the idea that we are all boring. This isn’t fair on them or on us.

Being a Chartered Accountant has, she believes, played a crucial role in her success. “The qualification gives you a robust technical grounding and teaches you to think in a deeply
Today, that appetite for variety keeps her passionate about her role at the BBC, “There are so many new challenges in media, largely because of the pace of change in the way audiences are using new digital technologies to access programmes.” The biggest buzz of all, she says, is knowing that the BBC matters to people’s lives in Britain – whether it’s covering the news about North Korea, delivering David Attenborough’s Africa series, or celebrating the 50th anniversary year of Dr Who.

WORKSHOP
CPAA WORKSHOP The Certified Public Accountants Association is a professional accountancy body whose members are engaged primarily in public practice. Our mission is to help, support, train and regulate accountants in public practice and to provide services to those engaged in industry and commerce. We are pleased to support Accountex for the second year and as a visitor, you are invited to our stand where you can view our latest education portal and participate in our exclusive workshop presentations. We have a varied program of events of direct interest to all accountants and financial managers. We will soon be unveiling our new web site and our CPD online facility and we have several new and exciting projects under way which will be of direct benefit to our members.
Auto-enrolment The Government has brought pensions to the forefront recently with the introduction of auto-enrolment. With the Pensions Regulator estimating that 16.15 million workers will be enrolled in 2013, companies need to plan now with the help of their accountant to mitigate the costs and minimise disruption to their businesses. This session from leading employee benefits business Kudos, which is part of the Mattioli Woods group, will provide detailed information and critical path examples for companies approaching auto-enrolment staging dates.
Treasury Management for Employment and Health & Safety law - what your clients should know and how you can help This workshop will add value to your services by giving you a better understanding of the challenges your clients face in dealing with day-to-day staff issues against the backdrop of constantly changing employment and health and safety laws. See how modern ‘cloud’ and ‘mobile app’ technology can help your clients manage their staff more effectively. Discover how you can help your clients by co-hosting your own free three hour seminar with Peninsula, as well as offering them free initial advice on any immediate employment or health & safety problems they may have.
Tax & Practice Management for the SME Practitioner BTC Software is an independent specialist business developing year-end compliance solutions for SME practitioners and corporate markets. This workshop explains who BTC Software are, where we’ve come from and why support is key. The talk will also detail success stories, as well as user-fuelled development and the future.
How to grow your practice inside out Rather than doing more of the same traditional marketing, discover how your practice can adopt an alternative approach that is faster, more cost-effective and frees the time you currently spend on ‘sales’. Attending this seminar will give you examples of proven strategies and a demonstration of a unique cloud-based tool that the CPAA has developed to support this radical marketing approach.
Small Practitioner Challenges In this captivating workshop by AccountingWEB editors Robert Lovell and Rachael Power, you will hear them set out the challenges faced by today’s small practitioner, and look at how AccountingWEB members have adapted to face the modern environment. They will draw on both practical insight and some of the more outlandish solutions that today’s accountants explore on AccountingWEB.

International Business This workshop will look at the importance of international trade to UK businesses, the risks and pitfalls to trading internationally, as well as international finance, how to access it and international credit insurance. It will also ask how you can minimise losses from foreign exchange rates and find out what financial instruments are available for businesses to use, all illustrated by client case studies.
Tax Agent Strategy HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has a UK-wide team of Agent Account Managers (AAMs) to help tax agents and advisers deal with the department more effectively. The presentation will explain what AAMs do, what services they provide, and how to contact them. The Tax Agent Strategy sets the direction for the future HMRC and agent relationship. The Agent Strategy Programme has been set up to take this forward. The presentation will include an overview on the key strands of work.
Pensions in 2013 This workshop, from leading pension and wealth management business Mattioli Woods plc, is designed to provide both practical information and solutions to pension and wealth management dilemmas, which may occur during planning with clients to get the most out of their retirement assets. Creating and managing an ongoing pension and wealth management strategy, which considers contributions, benefits, allowances and investments amongst other things, is vital. The workshop will also provide an update on the changes in pension legislation and how they will affect your clients.
Challenges faced by today’s small practitioner Our special guests, AccountingWEB, will be hosting a 30-45 minute discussion on the challenges facing the small practitioner. This interactive session will draw on the experiences and anecdotes of our community members. Vital questions will be answered in this exciting environment. STAND A304
To discuss capital allowances further please come and visit us on stand A304
CAPITAL ALLOWANCES EXPLAINED
Catax Solutions specialises in carrying out current and retrospective capital allowances claims for all entities, in relation to commercial properties right across the commercial sector. We specialise in cost segregation, through the identification and valuation of fixtures contained within commercial properties. Capital allowances are one of the more obscure areas of tax with the opportunity to claim on commercial properties often being lost along the way. We aim to work with accountants and their clients to rectify the issue and release the benefit to the property owner. We are bombarded with noise of companies failing to succeed in the poor economic climate, and in many situations this could have been avoided.
With big four accountancy firm Deliotte finding that millions of pounds of capital allowances are currently going unclaimed, pooling the allowances available within a company’s premises could well be the boost many struggling businesses need. Capital allowances can be claimed by the owning entity, so long as that entity is liable to pay UK tax. Whether the property owner is an individual, partnership, or a limited entity,

tax relief will be obtained at the tax payer’s marginal rate. This applies to property whether it is investment property or utilised within a trade. In the former case, the allowances are an allowable deduction against rental income. Importantly, property business tax losses created or augmented by capital allowances can be relieved sideways against other income. This renders the relief particularly attractive to commercial landlords. The general rule for the property business losses is that the loss must be carried forward and relieved against future profits from the same property investment business. This form of sideways loss relief for capital allowances is a welcome tax break. Similarly, individuals owning commercial property used within their own trade may claim capital allowances as a taxdeductible trading expense. In so doing they may reduce trading profit, or create, or increase, trading loss. Trading losses can also be relieved sideways against other income.
Due to the complexities involved and the large volume of legislation surrounding capital allowances, and capital allowances identification not being typical accountancy work, it is imperative to seek the best specialist advice available. This will ensure that clients maximise the benefits to which they are entitled. For example April 2014 is fast approaching, and from this date forward capital allowances will need to be pooled at the point of sale of a property, if not previously identified, and a ‘fair value’ for the fixtures contained within the property agreed upon by both the vendor and purchaser. Failure to do so within the two-year window for a S198 election will mean that the purchaser’s claim to capital allowances in the future will be blocked - in fact, not only the current purchaser, but all subsequent purchasers will lose their right! Businesses need all the help and support they can get to thrive and grow when markets are unstable, finance is tight and competition fierce. As their accountant, you are perfectly placed to offer the intuitive advice businesses need. You already know the ins and outs of your clients’ businesses; you have all the financial information you need to be able to help your clients succeed. But what if you could easily unlock that data and provide your clients with impressive visuals of their business information?
inputting data into spreadsheets. But with Smeebi as an add-on to your accounting software you can automatically generate a financial dashboard. Bringing your clients’ business to life, making interpreting the data easy, even for those without a financial background!
Business intelligence is something often associated with larger businesses, but why shouldn’t small businesses be able to access the same level of reporting, analysis and monitoring?

With a new type of business intelligence, you can use the data you already have to reinforce your role as business adviser, help and retain your clients, whatever their size. 1. business advice Accountants and business advice go hand in hand. Using visual tools and reports you can work with your clients to analyse their information and help them to set and re-evaluate their business goals. Features such as the budgeting tool will also allow you to work with your client on strategic plans and forecasts. You can then benchmark progress against actual results and evaluate opportunities. When you have such full, ongoing visibility of your client’s business, you can give even more powerful recommendations. 3. Empower your clients Simple to use business intelligence means that you really can empower your clients to use it themselves. Help them set their
own KPIs and goals, measure performance and really evaluate how their business is doing, without the fear sometimes associated with financial reporting. Because Smeebi is cloud based, you can supply your clients with their own log-in details and they can then access their business information anywhere. You can even collaborate with your clients, write comments on certain reports and make recommendations for them.
4. Build better relationships Using business intelligence gives you more reasons to regularly contact your clients. You can update the financial dashboard as often as you like, meaning that you can really keep your clients informed and they can see real progress for themselves with visual charts.

HOW TO GET THERE With three dedicated Docklands Light Railway (DLR) stations, easy access to the London Underground (Jubilee line), parking for 3,700 cars and London City Airport on our doorstep, getting to ExCeL London couldn’t be easier. When you arrive at the venue you can use either entrance but ExCeL West is the closest to the event entrance.
By Tube & DLR Station: Custom House (ExCeL West) The Jubilee Line is recommended as the quickest route to ExCeL London. Alight at Canning Town and change onto a Beckton-bound DLR train (not Woolwich Arsenal), for the quick 2-stop journey to Custom House for ExCeL (West). ExCeL London is located in Zone 3. London Underground tickets are valid on the DLR. It is recommended that visitors purchase a return ticket or an All-Day Travelcard to avoid queuing at the end of the day. Oyster Card users are reminded to touch in and out at the card readers onsite to avoid paying excess fairs.
By Rail As the Capital of the United Kingdom, London is connected by rail to all major cities in Great Britain. In addition Eurostar operate regular train services to Brussels and Paris operating from St Pancras International. London’s main rail terminuses are Charing Cross, Euston, Kings Cross/ St Pancras International, Liverpool Street, London Bridge, Marylebone, Moorgate, Paddington, Victoria and Waterloo. For the quickest route to ExCeL London by public transport from any rail station (or anywhere else) in London we recommend the Transport For London journey planner which can be found online at www.tfl.gov.uk
By Road When driving to ExCeL London, follow signs for Royal Docks, City Airport & ExCeL. There is easy access from the M25, M11, A406 and A13. For Sat Nav purposes, we recommend using postcode E16 1DR The venue is located outside the Congestion Charge Zone. For a map of ExCeL London’s location, please visit www.streetmap.co.uk and search using ExCeL London’s postcode - E16 1XL.
Parking ExCeL London offers onsite parking for 3,700 cars including over 2,000 spaces located directly beneath the venue. For detailed information on ExCeL’s parking facilities, please visit www.excel-london.co.uk/visitingexcel or call+44 (0)20 7069 4568 (within office hours). All onsite parking is pay and display, with the exception of the Royal Victoria multi-storey car park. ExCeL London offers 158 disabled parking spaces, located within close proximity of the venue.
By Air ExCeL London is simple to get to from London’s 6 main airports; London City, Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and Southend; via DLR, London Underground and mainline rail services. London City Airport is located 5 minutes from ExCeL London by car or taxi. In addition, the DLR links the airport and ExCeL London, via Canning Town. Frequent and direct shuttle buses run from Canary Wharf and Canning Town, to and from the airport. For further information or to book a flight, please visit www.londoncityairport.com.

INSOLVENCY FEES FOR ACCOUNTANTS
Insolnet allows General Practice Accountants to enter their local insolvency market without the compliance hassle and expense of an in-house Insolvency Practice. Insolnet offers a new way for Accountants to share insolvency fees Insolnet offers a new way for Accountants to share in any insolvency fees generated from one of their clients, by being able to share the work, and share the fee. It makes sense from the perspective of the Accountant and the client as the Accountant is familiar with their client which ensures the cases are set-up efficiently, and allows the Accountant to ensure his client interests are respected as the case progresses.
By dealing with cases on a secure web platform, the Accountant and IP can work efficiently and effectively together, ensuring the client is dealt with correctly, and case progression can be monitored with ease. All cases are bonded and insured by the Insolnet designated IP, at no cost or risk to the Accountant, who is acting as an Agent / Sub-contractor of the IP. www.insolnet.co.uk
