TIFFANI BOVA, SALESFORCE JAS HAWKER, MISSION EXCELLENCE
LEADERSHIP TIPS FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE TEAMS
BEING A HIGH PERFORMING SALES ORGANIZATION REQUIRES A HARD RESET ON CONVENTIONAL THINKING
What do high performance teams all have in common?
Regardless of what’s worked previously, the unintended consequences of both technology advancement and buyer behaviour is wreaking havoc on sales organisations.
The answer is people with the right values and behaviours, clear simple priorities when undertaking any activity, and the ability to apply honest and objective learning. Jas will bring lessons from the Red Arrows that can be applied to any sales team to improve performance with take-away messages that can be applied the very next day.
Whether you have a small sales force or a highly complex go-to market strategy, there’s no avoiding the reality that how we sell has forever changed. Tiffani will challenge conventional thinking, pushing sales to a more customer driven mind-set away from an internal productivity and performance based management style, and outline what she thinks the modern sales force will look like in the future.

STAND 140
THE SEARCH ENGINE MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA TRENDS OF 2016 With over 100 billion monthly searches and a staggering 88.9% share of the UK market, it’s easy to see why some B2B companies rely on Google to drive their brand awareness efforts and fill their conversion funnels with new leads.
Mobile Marketing 2015 was the year in which mobile searches overtook searches on desktops. This remarkable milestone not only signifies a fundamental change in the way in which we consume media, but cements further the importance of integrating mobile into marketing campaigns. To aid this change, Google, Facebook, and Apple are all developing ways in which to display mobile web pages at superfast speeds. If it was unclear thus far, now is the time to adopt a mobile strategy.
Technical SEO Technical SEO has always been a crucial factor in improving organic rankings, but with Google rolling out a raft of changes already this year it is more important now than ever before. A recent announcement from Google came in the form of real-time updates, which will require webmasters to keep a closer eye on traffic and become more reactive to penalties. This, together with speculation of yet another Quality Update in November and the recent shake-up in local organic listings means that sites are even more vulnerable. 2016 will demand a deep understanding of technical SEO and the agility to act at a moment’s notice.
“Our experience in combining technical SEO and content marketing with PR and social media is what sets us apart from other digital marketing agencies”
Social Intelligence
Marketing Automation
As more and more brands (rightfully) clamber on to the social media bandwagon, many forget that the digital marketing principle of ‘track everything’ still applies. Social media monitoring, listening, and analytics tools are plentiful and are only getting more sophisticated with the insight they provide. With paid-for advertising on social media on the up, social intelligence will, in 2016, help to form new, ROI-driven KPIs.
Less search engine and more email / content marketing, marketing automation has taken the world by storm. Those ‘we miss you’ and mysterious discount emails from your favourite service providers are meticulously planned, automated email campaigns strategically designed to land in your inbox at just the right time in the buying cycle.
Video A recent report estimated video Internet traffic to be 80% of all consumer Internet traffic in 2019. Whether it’s with Periscope, Facebook Live, Blab, Instagram, or YouTube, it’s safe to say 2016 will be the year that video comes into its own. Platforms such as Periscope have paved the way for live, usergenerated video content and have made low quality video forgivable. This year, we’ll see social media platforms promoting the use of video as a way of engaging users and cutting through the news feed noise.
According to an industry report, there are nearly 11 times more B2B organisations using marketing automation than there were in 2011 and with the number of providers offering cost-effective solutions ever increasing, we believe 2016 to be the year that the masses begin to leverage this powerful customer acquisition and retention tool. Our experience in combining technical SEO and content marketing with PR and social media is what sets us apart from other digital marketing agencies. We provide holistic campaigns for small, independent firms and multinational B2B brands, so if you’re looking to build brand awareness or drive leads, get in touch with our specialists.

GIVVIT FOR BUSNESS
EMPLOYEE HAPPINESS IS JUST A CLICK AWAY There’s a growing body of evidence to show that happy employees are more productive, take less time off sick and are more energised, motivated and engaged. With budgets tighter than ever and time at a premium for many businesses, nurturing a happy team can often come second to running a tight ship. “Increased employee happiness results in increased productivity,” comments James Cullen, CEO of corporate treating service Givvit Rewards. “Making your staff happy doesn’t have to be about grand, costly gestures. It’s about taking the time to make them feel valued and recognising their contribution to the company.” Jessica Pryce-Jones, author of ‘Happiness at Work’ and CEO of iOpener, conducted research with 3,000 respondents in 79 countries. She comments, “What’s the evidence that people who are happy at work have it all? The happiest employees are 180% more energized than their less content colleagues, 155% happier with their jobs, 150% happier with life, 108% more engaged and 50% more motivated. Most staggeringly, they are 50% more productive, too”. Pryce-Jones’ research also discovered that the happiest employees take 66% less sick leave than the unhappiest ones. New York Times bestselling author Gretchen Rubin, who wrote ‘The Happiness Project’, also observes that happy employees are able to better inspire and motivate their colleagues, with emotional contagion boosting team morale. Quite simply, “Happy people are good for teams”. Treating employees is an effective way to increase happiness in the workplace and a popular option to boost team morale, but employers often struggle with where to start. Bonuses are great but can seem impersonal and not always affordable. Team drinks are lovely, but what about those who don’t drink or can’t make the date? Thankfully, Givvit Rewards provides the perfect solution. Companies can treat their employees en masse to a selection of items via the Givvit Rewards website. All they need is a list of names and email addresses or phone numbers. Givvit Treats can be redeemed at much-loved retailers such as M&S, Caffè Nero, and PizzaExpress amongst others, and include bottles of wine, chocolates, coffees, pub drinks, flowers, charitable donations, and more, all digitally sent with a personalised message.
SIMPLE INSTANT GIVING Happy employees are 50% more productive. (iOpener) Happy employees are better team players, they inspire and motivate their colleagues (Gretchen Rubin, The Happiness Project) 28% of employees have considered switching to a competitor because they’re unhappy (Universum)
The element of surprise is one of the most interesting features of the Givvit approach; a business can choose to treat its staff on a whim and make it happen in minutes. So if everyone’s looking a little tired and jaded after payday, the managers can treat them all to an unexpected latte. Or if a team has had to work late all week on a project, the company can treat them to a pizza as a thank you. It’s this fun, flexible approach that is already proving so popular with SMEs. According to more Universum research – taking in 250,000 professionals across 55 markets – 28% of employees in the US and Canada have considered leaving their current employer for a competitor in the last year.Making sure employees feel valued with rewards beyond their pay packets can do CONTACT US much more than providing a shot givvitrewards.com in the arm every now and then – it info@givvitrewards.com can help keep 03332 020984 a good team together. PASSLE IS YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILE OPTIMISED FOR SUCCESS? STAND 330
Everyone who owns a LinkedIn account has probably filled out their personal profile as a bare minimum, but it’s surprising how few people make the most of its full potential. Here’s a quick checklist to make sure yours is performing as well as it could be.
Profile Picture Try to keep it professional: avoid group shots, grainy pictures, or anywhere where you’re nursing a margarita. If you don’t have a decent picture, get one done. Seriously. Profile shots can also be the opportunity to plug your work. People pose with their books, or a symbol of their company. It’s a little cheesy, but if it’s right for your target audience, why not! As with other networks, you can now add a cover photo to your profile. You can use this as an opportunity to promote a particular aspect of your work, or choose an image that reflects your brand.
Profile Content A common error is to treat your profile like a CV and simply copy and paste sections from your resume. You should instead see it as an opportunity to give a rounded view of your experiences. LinkedIn supports rich media such as Prezi, Storify, and Slideshare; you could add these to your different work
experiences to give prospective clients a different way of seeing your role, or more information on your company.
Personalize Your URL and Public Page It’s really easy to personalize your LinkedIn URL to something like uk.linkedin.com/in/ clairetrevien and it means you can share a less convoluted address with your contacts. To do that, go to your profile page. You’ll see below your profile picture a light grey box with your URL. If you hover over it a cog appears. Click on it and it’ll take you to your public profile. On the right hand side you can edit your URL to something a little easier to remember. This is a really useful page in general. Here’s where you can edit how people see your public profile. You can choose whether everyone sees your profile, or only your contacts, and which sections of your profile you want people to see. So if for instance, your ‘Interests’ section is a hot mess you’d rather not share, then you can untick it, and no one will be any the wiser.

Post Regular Updates With LinkedIn, it’s common wisdom that midweek (Tuesday-Thursday) either first thing in the morning (pre 8.30am), lunchtime, and early evening (5-6pm) are the best times to share updates. This makes sense as the audience will be checking LinkedIn while commuting or in their lunch break. The best way to work out optimal times is through testing. Buffer for example, shows the optimal posting times (in different time zones!) for each social media account, including LinkedIn profiles. If you don’t have Buffer, there are plenty of other analytics tools, such as Google analytics, which can give you insights on when your audience is predominantly active.
LinkedIn Groups There are a gazillion groups out there, and joining 2-3 groups that are relevant to your sector is recommended. Sharing your insights, and participating in them is a great way to raise your (newly optimized) profile. LinkedIn updated the groups recently in all sorts of positive ways so if you’ve been neglecting them go and take another look at them.

LEVERAGE SMS TO MAKE YOU A SMARTER MARKETER Targeted, flexible, cost effective, and traceable, SMS text messaging is far from an archaic. In fact, research firm Inonetics estimate SMS marketing spend will reach $8 billion dollars globally in 2016, so how can you afford not to utilise it in your marketing programme? The exponential growth of mobile in recent years, and the way it is now intrinsically linked to everyday business and consumer life, has seen it take centre stage in many marketing strategies to drive customer engagement. Various statistics validate this approach, none more so than the recent Ofcom 2015 Communications Marketing Report, which showed that 66% of UK adults own a smartphone; up from 39% in 2012. More impressively, a staggering 90% of 16-24 year olds owned one, and with brands scrambling for ‘real time’ connection with customers, you can see why mobile has become the primary communication tool with which to reach them. Today, there are upward of 3 million apps across Android and Apple, however marketers are largely pinning their hopes on common forms of outreach like email, display ads and social, and consequently they are forgetting, or neglecting, the benefits of one of the mainstays of mobile communication - the SMS.
The Benefits of SMS Far from being an aging pre-smartphone medium, did you know that 90% of text messages are opened and read within three minutes of delivery? Moreover, were you aware that SMS has a 19%
“Veoo … can help you establish a strong text messaging strategy, so those 160 characters you send to your customers will deepen engagement and drive new revenue”
click-through rate compared to only 2% with email? Or, in a world where there are over 1 billion mobile phones, that SMS is still the most used feature on any mobile phone? SMS is therefore incredibly widespread, and unlike mobile applications, it’s non-reliant on internet connection. Therefore, when other digital channels of communication like email fail, thus limiting the success of a particular campaign, SMS is still at liberty to reach its intended target. As well as being widespread, SMS also has incredible flexibility and can be used for a multitude of purposes, from delivery confirmation, appointment reminders, product activation facilitation, or even customer engagement through real-time inquiries about products. Moreover, SMS provides marketers with the freedom and functionality to deploy any number of campaigns inclusive of: welcome, transactional promotional, triggered, loyalty etc. In fact, with this very expo in mind, SMS would be a fantastic tool for sending notifications to attendees with event
highlights, to advise of amendments to conference schedules or to notify attendees when a particular talk is about to take place.
Conclusion With marketing budgets being squeezed annually, it is essential that every channel used has clear benefits and a tangible return on investment and ROI can be clearly tracked through SMS. By imbedding a URL within your SMS it is relatively easy to track what recipients have clicked through the conversion path and therefore ascertain how effective the communication was. The key priority for marketers is to create an effective SMS campaign that complements their overall marketing strategy and drives measureable results. Veoo, the dynamic messaging partner that offers a complete range of enterprise quality SMS services, can help you establish a strong text messaging strategy, so those 160 characters you send to your customers will deepen engagement and drive new revenue. FIVE BEST PRACTICES FOR TELLING GREAT DATA STORIES Everyone who has data to analyse has stories to tell; however, providing a fact based story can be challenging. You have to be interesting, memorable, detail oriented and data driven, but you also need to be concise, especially in today’s metric-centric world.
Don’t be afraid to tell data stories By finding the real stories in your data, you can get people to focus on your message – and, therefore, what’s important.
Don’t overwhelm colleagues Don’t overwhelm colleagues with data and facts without context. Instead, engage your audience by approaching it as a story. Data stories can bring facts to life, make it easier to remember key points and paint a vivid picture of what the future can look like. Stories also create interactivity - people put themselves into stories and can relate to the situation. Think of the ‘what?’, ‘who?’, ‘how?’, ‘why?’, and the often missed ‘so what?’. It’s these story elements that will make your data relevant and tangible for your audience.
Think of your analysis as a story – use a story structure When crafting a data-rich story, think about: Who are the characters? What challenges have to be overcome? And what do you want your audience to do as a result? It starts with analysing the data and uncovering your findings. Use data visualisation tools to accelerate your analysis time and give you the chance to examine your data more closely and in more relevant ways. Next, write out the storyboard which represents the structure and form of your story. The storyboard will help you to think about the best analogies or metaphors, to clearly set up challenge or opportunity, and to see the flow and transitions needed. It will help you focus on key visuals that are easier to recall. Keep slides to a minimum. Be authentic - your story will flow
To capture your audience’s attention, think about how you can take a data fact and make it personal, relatable, and perhaps emotional. Use a metaphor or anecdote to make the data more memorable. Selectively present core facts and data that prove your point. You can then supplement hard data with qualitative data.
Be visual – think of yourself as a film editor Symbols, graphs, and pictures are effective communication devices. A well-chosen visual easily tells the story in a single glance. On the other hand, tables of data or numbers can be confusing. Create well-formed visual analysis, charts, and graphs. Think about when you may have to present facts and data that are not great news for your audience. For instance, to communicate information about a fast-encroaching competitor, a graphic image showing a predator on the trail of its prey may be more effective than a table of declining numbers. It also advances the discussion. From this image, you can talk about what to do next.
Make it easy for your audience and you Storytelling makes communication easier. Your audience will recall the key message and can act on it. However, it should be simple and direct. Multiple stories within one overall presentation are fine, but the human brain typically cannot hold more than three to five major facts. Stick to the key issues and focus on how they relate to your audience.

It’s official: mobile apps are now integral parts of life. Formerly a millennial phenomenon and currently a multibillion pound industry that is clearly here to stay, the mobile app industry is the way of the future (and the present). So, how can a business achieve longstanding results in this field? What are the key business drivers? How can you build a successful app? Through a mobile application, users can accomplish a difficult and timeconsuming business process in just seconds. Still, each kind of app comes with challenges. Businesses require a deep rooted understanding of the technologies surrounding streamlining processes in B2C, B2B, & internal environments. In short, you know what you’d like to achieve but how will you execute it? That’s where an experienced app development company like Winapps steps in. Agris Belte, COO @ Winapps states “Thanks to mobile applications, smartphones, and tablets we now work and play on the move. These tools bring new capabilities which redefine the workplace. Reduce their cost of engagement and possibly consider ideas that might make it fun (if relevant). BOOSTING SALES WITH ACCOUNT BASED MARKETING 84% of marketers say that ABM delivers more ROI than any other marketing approach, according to ITSMA research. But what underpins the most successful ABM programmes? And is your organisation ready?
ABM works because it focuses your sales and marketing efforts onto your most valuable accounts. Rather than exhaustively searching for stray leads and opportunities, marketers can concentrate on the accounts they know matter most to their business. With this, ABM allows you to effectively coordinate personalised, strategic campaigns that treat key accounts as markets in their own right. In short, it’s a highly targeted approach, often at a one-to-one level. It’s about quality over quantity. This may seem like common sense, but it’s actually a massive opportunity – a change of thought and approach – that many are still yet to seize. The time is now to act on ABM. But why? ABM has previously been hampered by the fact it’s been unable to effectively scale – until now. New capabilities around data, technology, and content mean the traditional benefits of ABM can be achieved quicker, and at a greater scale. The best ABM programmes should be built on a genuine understanding of your customer’s strategic needs – and the conviction and agility to build campaigns, content, and engagement strategies that align with them.
“New capabilities around data, technology, and content mean the traditional benefits of ABM can be achieved quicker, and at a greater scale”
The development of powerful data curation tools, such as agent3’s insight3, now make it much easier to get the sort of relevant, continuous insights needed in order to engage key accounts. By taking advantage of the depth of insights these platforms curate, users can quickly and efficiently gather information about their target accounts, sectors, and executives. This in turn allows users to underpin their ABM strategies with evidence – giving them confidence that they understand exactly what commercial challenges their
key accounts face, and enabling them to build engagement strategies that tightly match these challenges. Whether you’re interested in winning new logos through pursuit marketing or looking to expand share of wallet and retain customers through upsell and advocacy marketing, using data to generate tangible insights and inform engaging campaigns maximises the entire customer lifecycle value of your accounts. The benefit of using this sort of data-based approach is that it provides completely scalable bespoke solutions. Sales teams can be armed with insight on what their customer and prospect stakeholders are talking about, what matters to them, which platforms they’re active, and more. The insight can be turned into engaging, impactful campaigns; a key concern, issue, or pain-point is identified and used as the basis of a dedicated messaging framework. In this way, by demonstrating a true understanding of your customers’ industries, an insightdriven ABM campaign can get straight to the conversations that really matter. The scalability doesn’t stop there. ABM approaches can take advantage of the latest in marketing technology, ensuring that personalised engagement plans and tailored content can be created and displayed through digital channels to the right contacts across each key account. This technology, such as industry-leading offerings from Marketo or Salesforce, can allow interactions to be automated at scale without compromising on impact – helping you get the most out of your campaigns. ABM is proven to support sales, but its success is built on insight. There are now massive opportunities to create true end-toend propositions where you can feel the full value and impact of an ABM approach. The combination of insight and action is what gives ABM the edge.

The Idea
STAND 124
CREATING VIDEO CONTENT THAT WORKS
This is the concept, the creative answer to your brief. In essence, it’s the creative approach for the video that will allow you to cut through the noise to make sure your message gets through to your audience with the desired effect.
According to Nielsen, 64% of marketers expect video to soon dominate marketing strategies. In addition, Cisco claim that by 2017, video will account for 69% of internet traffic. That’s a lot of noise to cut through when getting your message over in any meaningful way.
This is how the idea is brought to life. It’s the nuts and bolts of what will be done and how it will be executed. It will take into account things such as approach, style, tone, look, and feel. It’s important to note that these creative decisions should always be grounded in both research and insight relative to your target audience.
Video content that works can be defined as content with all the right ingredients in place to help you cut through this noise to achieve, or exceed, your business objectives.
Here are some essential parts of a tried and tested process that, done well, can lead to the creation of successful video content.
The good news for SMEs is that having a huge budget isn’t necessarily the key to success… true, it can help, but partnering with a video content agency that believes in doing its homework and putting in the right amount of groundwork is what helps create video content that achieves results.
This is the graft. Within this part of the process there should be a number of things taken into consideration – what your brand stands for, what your business objectives are, what your key messages are, who your target audience is, where the video will be shown, and what you want your audience to think, feel, and do once they have watched the video.
The right video content partner will have a process in place to ensure the idea for the video, commonly known as the creative approach, can actually work to meet your objectives. It will also be able to demonstrate a robust thinking behind why it will work to both engage your target audience and elicit a reaction.

Execution
Delivery This is where the final video will sit and how it will be promoted. Having this information upfront feeds all parts of the process. It’s fair to say that today’s audiences are media savvy; they’ve consumed so much content that they know when they’re being sold to. Unless the content of a video is made relevant to them they are unlikely to engage with it. Having a holistic process in place allows for a full understanding of your target audience, how best to attract their attention as well as engage them and elicit a response, before anything gets made. CONVEYING COMPLEX MESSAGES Few marketing tools are as immediate, emotive, multipurpose, and memorable as a short animation. Your clients are time-poor and need to digest information quickly. A 1x minute animation is memorable, explains what your business does in a snap, and when it’s clever, beautiful, or funny it gets shared virtually by your audience into their own communities - doing your brand story promotion for you. An animation can explain the most complex methodology and can take the viewer into any era or even into a tiny component, whilst being gender or culturally neutral. Whether it’s motion graphics, kinetic typography, a 2D infographic style, using 3D characters, or even stop motion – there is a solution to meet practically any budget. • • • • •
A 1x minute corporate video = 1.8 Million words (Forrester) Including video on email campaigns increases clickthrough by 96% (Implix) Video is the most downloaded and shared content on the Internet We process images 30,000 x faster than text, and store them in our long term memory Online purchases are 64% more likely when website visitors have just watched a product or brand video
An animation becomes your ‘elevator pitch’ for new business, enables your internal team to easily articulate the brand, incorporates into your marketing campaigns, induction or sales training programmes, can be used on QR codes, and on email signatures as a powerful company advert, broadcast with each missive. Like those jingles you can still sing from your childhood, animations are highly memorable.

EDENVIDEOS SMARTVIDEOMARKETERS THINKBEYONDYOUTUBE STAND 180
When you think of video marketing, what comes to mind first? Most people immediately think of YouTube. Of course YouTube is huge, but there’s much more to video marketing that you need to know. Let’s talk. The first thing you need to keep in mind is that YouTube is not just a free video hosting site. First and foremost, it is a powerful advertising platform owned
by Google. To sell more ads, they want to keep their visitors watching more videos on their website for as long as possible. What YouTube wants can often conflict with your
the rest of your content, so don’t just put it all on YouTube and leave it at that. Instead, make video content a feature of all your marketing activities. Upload video content to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and if you’re really brave, try Periscope!
Social video content is great for growing your audience and increasing your brand awareness, but most of the time you’ll be looking to direct your followers to what is most commonly your main online marketing asset – your company website. It makes such a difference to your website visitors to have an explainer video on your homepage to give them the essential information of what you do and how you can help them in just 2 minutes or less. Transforming your blog from a text-only experience to one that includes short and interesting video content should be high on your list of priorities. The same goes for landing pages, product pages, and all other significant pages on your website.
Make it platform-specific for greater success. Keep in mind that video content performs differently for each platform, so you need to make them platform-specific rather than just trying to upload the same video everywhere. Also, native video uploads usually generate better results on their respective platforms compared to just embedding or linking to a YouTube video. A study by Search Engine Journal in 2015 showed that native Facebook videos reach 2x more people, get 2x more likes, 3x more shares, and 7x more comments!
Don’t forget the most important videos of all.
Become a smart video marketer. By integrating video content throughout your online (and offline) marketing activities, you’ll be able to grow your business to the next level and stay ahead of the competition. business goals, so you need to be careful about how you use it in your marketing.
Know the limitations of YouTube. Don’t expect to generate a huge amount of traffic to your website through YouTube videos. Although this is possible, for the majority of businesses it won’t be the case. If this is how you choose to measure your results, you might not be very impressed. You need to think of YouTube differently; remember, YouTube is about discovery, not loyalty, so don’t expect your YouTube viewers to be super-engaged with your brand or to buy anything from you on the spot. To be a smart video marketer, you have to think beyond YouTube.
Use video content everywhere. Don’t think of video content as an island. It isn’t supposed to live in isolation, miles away from

the buying process is now more complex; and you have to deal with that complexity or you’ll be outpaced by smarter competitors.
HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN TURBO CHARGE YOUR DIGITAL MARKETING In today’s B2B sales, customers are 70% through their decision-making process before they even contact suppliers. This fundamentally changes and elevates the role of B2B marketing. Discover how technology can help you influence your prospects long before they get in touch with you. The Internet has changed buyer behaviour. Traditional models of customer engagement, where customers relied on salespeople for information about products and services, are woefully outdated.
Amazon uses data on what you’ve bought and when and your reviews to build up a profile of your buying tastes. They compare this with other shoppers with similar tastes to bundle goods they think you will want to buy and provide recommendations.
Buyers used to follow a predictable buying process. Sellers didn’t know who was where in that process, so a blanket marketing message was the only option. The Internet has changed that. Online shopping is fickle; shoppers can abandon one seller for a better deal at the click of a mouse. Halfway through a purchase, they may think better of it, only to return at a later date.
Other retailers have followed suit, and online shoppers now expect a high level of targeting and personalisation. These expectations translate to their B2B purchasing habits. In
Buyers no longer need salespeople’s services to inform early parts of their decision-making. Studies show that B2B buyers can be 70% of their way through their decision-making before they contact you. The amount of data available has mushroomed. You can get data about customer purchases, abandoned carts and forms, which web pages customers visited, where they clicked, whether they opened your emails, and whether they clicked on the links. Online retailing has set buyer expectations for how sellers should react.
“The emphasis has shifted towards influencing buyers long before they make contact with sales departments”
The emphasis has shifted towards influencing buyers long before they make contact with sales departments. Marketing departments must provide sales teams with better data about previous customer interactions. Automating your email marketing allows you to target your communications more effectively, making use of whatever data you hold about your prospects. It enables you to save time on low value admin tasks, messing about with spreadsheets, and transferring data from system to system. You can then use that time on more useful activities such as planning your strategy, creating content, analysing responses, and split-testing to optimise your campaigns. You can also provide your readers with highly targeted, hyper-relevant content based on what you know about them. People will respond more, and you can use the data you thereby obtain to feed the very best sales leads to your teams. Your salespeople will become laser-focused on your hottest prospects, leading to higher conversion rates, more sales, a lower cost per lead and greater profit. This can only realistically be achieved through automation. You haven’t got time to do it manually. So you can continue to use basic, bland, untargeted, unfocused emails, which don’t reflect your customers’ experiences and increasingly lose ground to more advanced competitors. Or you can embrace automation and enjoy the benefits of more strategic, better targeted, intelligent campaigns.
B2B markets, customers weigh up their buying decisions in a similar, fragmented way. Sellers must therefore react in realtime, with the same spontaneity as their customers. Your communications must reflect the exact point of the customer’s buying journey, which may be quite specific to each customer. So even in B2B business,

“Since customers’ attitudes precede their behaviours, often by quite some time, changes in customers’ perceptions give a very early warning of impending defections”
Since customers’ attitudes precede their behaviours, often by quite some time, changes in customers’ perceptions give a very early warning of impending defections. You can track changes in some key customer attitudes such as their interest in competitors’ messages and their rating of competitors’ products/ services. This will identify how many vulnerable customers you have, who they are, and why one or more competitors’ stock has risen in their eyes more than yours. And it can be done early enough to give you a chance to address the issues. Before it’s too late. As well as defending your own vulnerable customers you can also identify which competitor has the most vulnerable customers. In particular, vulnerable customers that are attracted to you. Plus the sales and marketing messages that will most appeal to them. 4 INSIDER TIPS FOR B2B LEAD GENERATION
Coming from a background of lead generation, our main aim as a company is to help B2B marketing teams and sales departments generate new leads. We hope our 4 ‘insider tips’ help you on the path to success…
1
BE SMART WHEN CHOOSING YOUR AUDIENCE When setting out on a lead generation campaign, it’s vital to segment your audience to help with your targeting.
Approach this by filtering on the type of lead and company you want to speak to, as well as factoring in the personal and professional interests of your potential prospects. Initially, criteria could be segmented on line of business (job title) or by specific vertical market (industry sector) – then marketers can create basic buyer personas based on questions like: • What is the leads’ authority level? • What are their main goals and objectives? • What are their current pain points? If you can establish this before beginning a campaign, you will have the best chance of generating leads using relevant and interesting content.
3
SELECT YOUR MARKETING CHANNELS WISELY You’ve defined your audience. You have the content. How do you connect the two?
Marketers often weigh up Inbound vs. Outbound – the age old debate. Organic, inbound tactics can generate the occasional sales qualified lead (SQL) but with a hungry sales team snapping at your heels, spending budget on these methods can run the risk of your pipeline drying up. In a perfect world, you would have an organically grown audience, receiving fresh branded content each week. You would use many digital distribution channels to send to this prospect list and they would return time and time again to consume your content.
The reality is that B2B marketers don’t always have the time or budget to create and distribute a flow of valuable content, to optimise their own audience as a channel. Often the flow of inbound leads is hard to predict and launching activity to your own database often means it’s hard to generate net new leads. Once you have the perfect content, it’s incredibly easy to slip into bad habits too – such as simply posting it to a resources section and forgetting about it. The best lead generators use every distribution channel at their disposal to create a buzz around new collateral and generate new opportunities.
2
CREATE CONTENT THAT PROVIDES ANSWERS Content is a fantastic vehicle to introduce your brand, generate leads and start a meaningful conversation with new prospects.
It’s easy to forget in the context of lead generation, that content should also be used as a tactic to leverage the collection of not just contact details, but personal information too. By aligning content to the particular challenges of your ideal customer defined in tip #1, you can pre-qualify a lead’s interest levels, pain points, requirements and profile. All of these tactics are possible, providing your message is valuable to the reader and it provides answers. It’s also crucial to remember that there’s a thought process behind someone’s actions too:
If someone has downloaded or consumed a piece of content, there is a reason for it. Therefore weigh up,“what does this person care about?” as well as, “what do I want to achieve?” – prospects generally consume content to seek reassurance or information. We recommend being forthcoming with advice and knowledge. It’s this non-selfish approach that’s key to not only lead generation, but also boosting customer engagement and brand reputation.
4
GIVE SALES A HEAD START The focus for any marketer responsible for lead generation is likely to remain with generating marketing qualified leads (MQLs).
However, if you generate leads that slightly fall outside of this specification, make sure you have safety nets in place to help sales rescue any potential of those prospects converting into new business opportunites. Introducing subtle profiling techniques to your lead capture process can be vital for ascertaining essential information – such as someone’s interests, remit, buying position or requirements – giving any sales team a quick ‘hook’ to latch on to during their pitch. This can also give marketers an insight into what type of content should be sent to that lead next time. Combining these methods with the alignment of your sales strategy, whilst informing stakeholders as to exactly what marketing tactics are being used to generate the leads, should provide your sales department with some strong ammunition to nurture leads effectively.

Big data presents opportunities as well as challenges. The continued dramatic rise in the volume and complexity of available data presents both opportunities and challenges for businesses to source information that is relevant, targeted and timely.
We believe that big data uniquely enables us to see, understand and be aware of the competitive landscape in new and increasingly detailed ways. Leveraging this data can provide actionable insights and strategic information to support the key roles in an organisation at every touch-point with the market, enabling organisations to compete more effectively and close sales. The ability to harness big data is often seen as only being affordable and relevant for large corporations. However, recent technical developments mean that this is no longer the case. With the right know-how, companies of all sizes can realise the benefits from using data to boost their sales without significant investment in hardware, software or people.
