James Caan knew from a young age that he wanted to run his own business. His father owned a successful leather goods manufacturing company, but James decided not to take up the family business and became an entrepreneur, leaving school at 16 with no qualifications. The young Caan spent the mid-1980s forging a successful career in recruitment before founding Alexander Mann, a UK recruitment business that he grew to £130m turnover and 30 offices worldwide and which was sold for £260m last year. But that wasn’t enough for the ambitious young entrepreneur, who had also launched Humana International, a franchising model with 147 offices in 30 countries which he sold in 1999. James was invited to join the panel of the highly popular BBC TV show Dragons’ Den in 2007, since then he has invested in a diverse range of businesses and become a familiar face in living rooms around the world. And that isn’t even his day job! James is now CEO of Hamilton Bradshaw and one of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs, backing people with passion. Clearly not one to rest on his laurels, James has now launched, and is chairman of, Start-Up Loans – the government backed scheme helping people to start in business. As if that wasn’t enough, James is also the author of three best-selling books, is a LinkedIn influencer and thought leader on
entrepreneurship with over two million followers, has recently launched his very own ‘Business Secrets’ app which stormed to number one in the iTunes chart and he’s even found time to host a new business TV series on CNBC.

If you want the classic rags to riches story, spend some time in the company of David Gold. He literally went from selling buttons on a stall to earning his place in the Sunday Times Rich List, with an estimated wealth of £360m. Not bad for an East End boy who apprenticed as a brickie... Does everything David touches turn to Gold? It certainly seems like it, but that has more to do with a shrewd business mind and steely determination than superstition. David showed every sign of the entrepreneur he would become as he was growing up, running a card and sweet shop from the front room of the family home. He went on to run a bookstore in Charing Cross, before branching out into publishing, printing and distribution. But it was with the addition of the Ann Summers chain that David became one of the biggest success stories in British retailing. It currently has 153 stores with an annual turnover of £150 million. David then set up the Sunday Sport, which was so successful it became a big selling daily newspaper. A keen pilot himself, David set up Gold Air International not only for his own travel needs to the boardrooms of Europe, but also chartering jet travel to the rich and famous. David’s enduring passion for football led him to steer Birmingham City from the verge of bankruptcy and relegation to securing promotion to the Premier League. In 2009, David sold the club, enabling him to buy a 62% stake in West Ham United, the very team that had offered him an apprenticeship as a schoolboy.

Despite holding a BA in Civil Engineering, Bosnian Edin Basic spoke little English when he moved to the UK in 1992 to avoid the Balkan conflict. After working as a head chef, he accepted a variety of management roles with Prima Pasta, Dome and Caffe Uno. Edin was responsible for the opening and development of new Caffe Uno units before becoming an area manager, responsible for eight units with annual sales of £5.5 million. Edin then moved to Starbucks as a district manager, with responsibility for the City of London, before leaving to pursue Firezza in 2001. The idea was to serve beautifully prepared, restaurant quality food to discerning professionals though an unsurpassed delivery/ take-out/eat-in experience. approach rather than trying to manage multiple platforms that then see only infrequent activity. When it comes to content, finding or creating enough interesting stuff to talk about can seem overwhelming. Start to integrate this into your organisation’s day to day activity. Ask customers to take photos or write reviews that you can post, take photos of things that happen in the office, bookmark articles to share when you are next online. Identify what success looks like for you. If you are investing time and effort in this, it needs to pay dividends. For instance, if you increase your followers on Twitter or likes on Facebook then that’s great news, but are they the right kind of followers who will help you achieve your business objectives? And lastly, remember to bring your personality to it. A successful social media presence is one that is an extension of you and your organisation.

This rise is interesting not only to business journalists and economic editors but also to those in Whitehall and the Bank of England. From IPSE’s privileged position on the inside they can see that the sector is made up of varied
Rather than being a problem, this presents the organisation with a wonderful opportunity to make the changes IPSE have been fighting for since 1999. But in order to take advantage of this opportunity, they also needed to change. A journalist working on a story relating to self-employment, independent professionals, freelancing or any other type of microbusiness wants to talk to the biggest and most credible organisation representing this sector. It is of utmost importance that when a journalist quotes an expert in a story, their readers will understand why. To use a very simple example, if you are reading about
a rise in business rates affecting shopkeepers and you see a quote from the Director General of the Federation of Small Businesses, you know why. The FSB is undoubtedly the voice of that sector. Now think about reading a story on how the taxation system is strangling the productivity of independent professionals. The name ‘Professional Contractors Group’ simply does not speak to the audience in the same way. That goes for every other issue IPSE is campaigning on, be it late payments, maternity pay and IR35. The harsh reality is that if they had continued to be perceived, however inaccurately, as a niche organisation representing only a very small group of independent professionals the association would only ever have hoped to achieve the kind of influence an organisation with that perception commands. suddenly represent all levels of self-employment. Their membership consists of 22,000 professional individuals primarily working in IT, engineering and increasingly, the creative sectors. However, they do share commonality of cause with many other professional and managerial freelancers who work in the same way and who, sadly, will never identify with a brand like PCG. The new brand opens the door to these people and by uniting with them we will undoubtedly be stronger. If IPSE wants to make real changes, the team working every day to get the key messages in front of the people that matter need to be armed with a brand that clearly communicates who we are, what we want and more importantly, why people should listen to us. As IPSE, the association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed, the organisation is now perfectly placed to do that.
