Richard graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1976 and subsequently undertook a PhD in heavy metals and microbial ecology at the University of Bristol.

Particular focus will be given to the application of multiple remedial techniques.

Peter has over 35 years’ experience of carrying out and managing geotechnical and environmental advisory services.

His specialisms include redevelopment of derelict land and contaminated sites, soil and groundwater pollution risk assessment, landfill restoration and gas risk assessment, waste management, and environmental geotechnics.

DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OF RSK GROUP PLC On housing developments, Peter has helped to devise economic foundation solutions for various ground conditions and provided advice to the National House-Building Council. He has developed guidance manuals for several UK housing developers to ensure that development of potentially contaminated land is managed in a consistent and safe manner.

Peter was on the steering committee for CIRIA’s report on methane and hazardous ground gases and chaired CIRIA’s committee for its VOC handbook and remediation guide.

He chaired the AGS Ground Forum for nine years, represents HBF on the Land Forum, and is a member of the SiLC Professional Technical Panel.

SEMINAR SNAPSHOT Cloud computing has changed the way we store and access our personal and corporate data and documents but has yet to have significant influence on the site investigation industry. This presentation will outline examples of cloud computing and highlight some of the areas where advancing technologies could transform the way the industry utilises and reports site investigation data in the coming years.

Phillip is a highly experienced technical specialist with a broad understanding of contaminated land risk assessment and remediation, industrial effluent, and waste treatment technologies, gained over 30 years spent in both the oil and chemical industry.

Phil is visiting professor of environmental biotechnology in the Groundwater Protection and Restoration Group at the University of Sheffield, a member of the CL:AIRE Technology & Research Group, and was chairman of the DTI Bioremediation LINK Programme Management Committee throughout its existence. He maintains a high level of expertise and profile through participation in R&D projects on remediation technologies, numerous presentations and written publications, delivery of training on risk assessment and remediation, including courses delivered through professional bodies and teaching on undergraduate and post-graduate university programmes.

SEMINAR SNAPSHOT Solidification-stabilisation involves the controlled and carefully engineered application of reagents to soils in order to bind contamination in place and/ or achieve physical containment. In this seminar, Phillip will present learning and experience gained from the application of this technology for the remediation of a wide range of sites contaminated with organic and inorganic contaminants to achieve protection of human health and controlled waters.

Dr Crouch will take you through the groundbreaking Light Decontamination System. This new light, portable, and extremely powerful airborne and surface decontamination solution from Scott Safety is achieving a military first – decontamination of chemical, biological, and radiological vapours, liquids, and particles simultaneously in as little as five minutes. He will explain how Scott’s atomisation technology creates a fine mist of rapid projection to ensure an even and consistent coverage of areas up to 500m³.

WM3: CLASSIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT OF HAZARDOUS WASTE Mark has worked for SEPA for over ten years predominantly as their policy lead for two key waste portfolios, namely Hazardous/Special Waste and Healthcare Waste. Mark plays a key role in the development of SEPA’s environmental policies, strategies, and guidance.

Mark’s role within SEPA works closely with their UK partner environment agencies, most recently seen in his involvement in the development of WM,3 and represents SEPA on a

number of CIWM special interest groups, namely its Healthcare Waste (Scottish and UK) SIGs, Hazardous Waste SIG, and Regulation SIG. Mark has also been involved in a number of external projects, such as the European Commission led TAIEX scheme, presenting in Macedonia and Turkey, and as a member of the scientific board to the EU funded (INTERREG) PILLS Project.

SEMINAR SNAPSHOT Mark’s seminar will cover the classification and assessment of hazardous waste in the UK, primarily focusing on the UK agency guidance document ‘WM3 – Guidance on the Classification and Assessment of Waste’, the regulatory framework (European and UK), and the various steps required to classify and assess waste in line with this framework.

A chartered chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, David is currently technical lead on all Scott Safety CBRN hazard management programs for both the civil and military markets. His role also includes account management, negotiation, and engagement with principal stakeholders throughout the international disinfection community.

He has worked in the geoenvironmental sector for over 35 years and is both a SiLC and a RoGEP. He is immediate past chairman of both the Land Forum and the AGS, and chairman of the professional standards committee leading the initiative to deliver the NQMS for land contamination reports.

SEMINAR SNAPSHOT Seamus will provide an update on the launch of the National Quality Mark System for Land Contamination Management. The scheme has been developed by the Land Forum to assist both developers and local authority regulators ensure that land contamination management work meets the necessary technical and regulatory standards. The scope covers all land contamination reports submitted in support of a planning application and has the support of DCLG and DEFRA.

SEMINAR SNAPSHOT Geoenvironmental processes mitigating risks from natural and man-made pollutants are a necessary cost in reusing land safely.

Geotechnical processes ensure the physical stability of ground based structures. By combining such processes, a larger net benefit can be achieved than designing and even implementing each in isolation.

By adopting a zero waste and circular land use philosophy, site specific technology trains can be identified that will improve the environmental and economic effectiveness of a project.

Nick Sartain has nearly 20 years of experience in geotechnical design including earthworks, foundations, slope engineering, seismic engineering, and geotechnical risk assessment.

SEMINAR SNAPSHOT This seminar will discuss some of the challenges faced by HS2 in respect of land quality along the route, and the approach that will be followed in addressing these issues on the largest infrastructure project in the UK.

Much of his recent work was on linear infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas where he variously acted as designer, checker, and design manager.

Nick is now the lead geotechnical engineer at HS2 where he is responsible for the specification, integration, and assurance of geotechnical work streams on the project.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Adam routinely advises on a range of regulatory compliance and operational issues, including soil and groundwater contamination, environmental permitting, trade effluent and water discharges, waste management and duty of care, flood and water management, and producer responsibility obligations. He has also assisted clients with UK and EU wide regulatory compliance initiatives and strategic projects in areas such as supply of substances, product safety and stewardship, brownfield redevelopment, waste disposal, site decommissioning, and permit surrender in relation to manufacturing facilities, chemical and petrochemical plants, and waste facilities.

THE FISCAL INCENTIVES GROUP

TAX INCENTIVES FOR BROWNFIELD DEVELOPMENT Tax incentives can play a key role in bringing contaminated land back into productive use.

Ben will help delegates navigate their way through the tax incentives legislation, and will provide guidance on the claim making process and alerts to some common pitfalls.

There’s also an overview of the legislation’s proposed modifications and how they will support the delivery of the brownfield development objectives set out in the Housing & Planning Act.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Ben specialises in land remediation relief and currently advises many of the volume housebuilders and developers of complex brownfield sites. He has overseen in excess of £2bn worth of claims since enactment of the relief in 2001 and has successfully negotiated a number of key entitlements and eligibility issues with HMRC. He is a strong advocate of brownfield development and has worked extensively with the Environmental Industries Commission and Home Builders Federation to develop awareness of the Land Remediation Relief regime and to lobby for modifications to the relief to make it more responsive to the challenges of developing contaminated land.

COSTS AND BENEFITS: MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE (WFD) ABOUT THE SPEAKER Elizabeth has worked on a range of studies covering analysis and assessment in relation to water quality, biodiversity, and ecosystem services and undertaken numerous assessments for the Coal Authority and Environment Agency on the water quality benefits expected to result from remediation of areas affected by former mining activity (including both coal and metal mines). These have focused on identifying the benefits of full or partial improvements in waterbody status under the Water Framework Directive (WFD).

Other work has included an assessment of the options for reducing the level of nitrogen entering Poole Harbour (linked to water protection zones).

The WFD requires consideration of remediation measures where waterbody status is less than good (or good potential).

With limited funding available, actions need to be targeted towards the waterbodies where benefits can be maximised compared with the costs. This seminar covers the use of an economic assessment methodology to enable prioritisation of mine water treatment schemes; it also looks at how such methods could be applied in other contexts.

BROWNFIELD FIRST WEDNESDAY | 15:30 | THEATRE 11 Making better use of our land, and its implications for the brownfield sector under the new housing and planning act which includes a new requirement for councils to have a brownfield register.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Building on an extensive background in politics and influencing policy, Michael’s work at EIC focuses on contaminated land, air quality and international trade. Prior to joining EIC, Michael served as a policy advisor to the Conservative Party, with work focused on UK legislation in the House of Commons, as well as political policy. With passions in promoting innovative technologies for the remediation of land, and making policy recommendations to achieve the best outcome, Michael’s presentation will focus on EIC’s newly released report entitled Brownfield first: making better use of our land.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER A biotechnologist by training, after finishing a PhD on nuclear waste treatment, Russell worked within the industrial research sector of the UK gas industry before transferring to the consultancy sector 16 years ago.

Although Russell has worked across a wide range of areas, he is best known for his knowledge of the manufactured gas industry and a range of successful innovation projects he has managed.

Russell was recently appointed to a professorship at the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, in addition to his lectureship at the University of Manchester. Russell manages a variety of innovations projects in collaboration with these universities, which stretch from environmental applications of nanotechnology to research into environmental forensics.

INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO UNDERSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL LEGACY OF THE BRITISH GAS INDUSTRY WEDNESDAY | 11:45 | KEYNOTE THEATRE 15 Gasworks were a common feature across the UK and have left an environmental legacy, for which the application of accurate environmental forensic methods may help provide a greater degree of understanding than that currently provided by standard analytical methods.

This presentation reviews the development of this industry, the technologies used, and demonstrate how new innovative techniques such as environmental forensics can be used to interpret this legacy.

THE REMEDIATION OF PETERS WORKS, MEDWAY VALLEY, KENT WEDNESDAY | 14:00 | THEATRE 11 Adele’s seminar will provide an overview of the remediation strategy implemented at the Peters Village development.

Ground investigation studies had demonstrated that localised contamination requiring remediation was present at the former Peters Works factory site.

An environmental betterment strategy was developed to address the pollutant linkages identified in relation to localised impacts on groundwater and also those within the made ground.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Adele joined BAM Nuttall Ltd in 2003 after graduating in Geological Sciences from the University of Leeds. She has over 13 years’ site environmental management experience associated with major civil engineering schemes for both public and private sector clients.

Once the process is initiated (ignited), the energy of the reacting contaminants /waste materials is used to pre-heat and initiate combustion of contaminants in adjacent areas, propagating a combustion front in a self-sustaining manner, provided a sufficient flux of air is supplied.

Nicholas Willenbrock manages the development of the Definition of Waste: Development Industry Code of Practice (​DoW CoP​)​ – a hugely successful, co-regulation approach to excavated soils reuse.

He has developed CL:AIRE’s online ‘Register of Materials’ which successfully matches projects with surplus soils to those with a deficit. He has also helped foster the International Group of Excavated Materials Reuse Programs – which aims to link soils reuse initiatives in France, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Canada to share lessons learnt and development ideas.

Chris Stopford is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Hertfordshire. Having completed a PhD in Physics on the topic of classification of cirrus ice crystals by in situ light scattering instruments, he has continued to pursue research into the development of particle detection instrumentation and analysis techniques. Working with academics (UK MET Office, NASA, University of Manchester, ETH Zurich), commercial partners (Select Group, Alphasense), and others (Health & Safety Executive, Environmental Protection Agency), these instruments have been used for the detection and classification of high altitude cirrus, airborne asbestos, fracking sand, and other environmental aerosol.

HMVTRS has carried out an in situ remediation project near Brussels, Belgium.

The project site was heavily polluted with a complex mixture of chlorinated solvents, alcohols, and (aromatic) hydrocarbons as well as a lot of pollutant mass (ca. 25 tons). During the presentation, Marco will detail how the in situ thermal remediation project was designed and what results were achieved.

The seminar will include a case study of the first full scale implementation of PerfluorAd in Germany.

Our very timely findings could be applied in the context of in situ biochar application to be an effective means of reducing groundwater pollution risks for agricultural chemicals or those accidently released into soil.

Results from experimental studies indicated that biochar amendment to soil significantly enhanced the remediation of the contrasting organic pollutants in soil-biochar systems. A numerical mass transfer model was also used to predict pollutant behaviour in heavy rainfall events.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Bao-Son Trinh is a geo-environmental scientist with significant experience as a postdoctoral researcher, lecturer, and consultant across the UK, Japan, and South-East Asia. He possesses an outstanding academic background, a good publication record, and significant experience in the fields of environmental engineering across contaminated soil/sediment remediation, groundwater pollution, solute transport modelling, and water management.

The identification of ground-gas regimes that vary on a site-specific basis indicates the potential for a mismatch between the frequency of sampling and the variability of gas concentration, demonstrating the importance of selecting an appropriate sampling frequency.

Combined with onsite field analysis of VOCs in boreholes, there’s an increased potential to get a fuller understanding of the true nature of ground gas regimes and the potential contamination of soils and ground waters with organics.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Andy Nicoll is the advocacy manager for Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL), managing the company’s programme of external stakeholder engagement.

He has worked both in industry and government, managing a Tier 1 response base for BP and as a counter pollution officer for the UK MCA respectively.

The workshop will cover key aspects in the handling of environmental claims and will explore incidents ranging from oil, chemical, and slurry spills to major fire incidents. Using real examples, the speakers will explore aspects relating to the response, investigation, and remediation of these incidents, and will highlight how associated costs can be best managed.

With a degree in Chemistry and Mathematics, Will trained and worked as an analyst, specialising in organic chemistry but working in a range of laboratories/ disciplines across the environmental and pharmaceutical sectors. Outside of the lab, Will spent eight years as customer service and contract manager for the commercial arm of the Environment Agency’s testing laboratory (NLS). ABOUT THE SPEAKER Natalie Stingelin is professor of organic functional materials at the Department of Materials, Imperial College London. Prior to this, she conducted research at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, the Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich, and as junior staff at Queen Mary, University of London. Natalie obtained the degree of Engineer in Materials Science in 1997 from ETH Zürich, and in 2001 completed her doctoral studies, for which she was awarded the ETH Medal. She has published more than 140 papers and holds six issued patents. Her current research interests encompass the broad field of organic functional materials, including organic electronics, multifunctional inorganic/organic hybrids, and smart, advanced optical systems based on organic matter.

Graham has been ACAD manager since joining the association in 2013, and has worked in the asbestos industry for most of his working life after graduating from the University of Sheffield. His role reflects ACAD’s central aim of improving standards throughout the asbestos industry by developing ACAD, overseeing ACAD’s activities and representing membership views at all relevant HSE meetings, including the Asbestos Liaison Group (ALG) as well as various Build UK groups.

In the past two years, Graham has been instrumental in the creation of specialist apprenticeship programmes for the licensed asbestos sector, coordinated the joint industry review of the licensed contractors’ guide HSG247, and led ACAD as the sole organisation that supported HSE’s review of HSG210.

She has specialised in environmental and regulatory law since she qualified (at Nabarro LLP) and she has practised for over two decades. Over her career, she has been involved in diverse cases including nuisance actions and prosecutions but has also worked on major transactions involving businesses that have significant environmental impacts, such as those in the mining, chemicals, and rails sectors. Bav’s roles have predominantly been associated with decommissioning, demolition, and waste management of redundant nuclear facilities.

He is a chartered radiological protection professional with over 25 years of experience with hazardous materials in advisory, management, and operational capacities. He advises the Society for Radiological Protection on a specialist committee for Security of Radioactive Materials (BSI) and an international (ISO) technical committee on standards. Matt has presented technical papers on decontamination techniques, CBRN recovery, and contaminated land remediation at conferences within the UK and Europe, India, and the US/Canada.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER James Cooper is director of studies for environmental science at the University of Liverpool, and a member of the Institute for Risk and Uncertainty. He graduated from the University of Sheffield with a PhD and has held posts at the universities of Sheffield (research associate), Hull (research fellow) and Bradford (lecturer). James has spent 14 years pursuing research into the monitoring and modelling of water and sediment transport processes on hillslopes and within river channels, including the understanding of contaminant movement. In collaboration with physics and engineering at Liverpool, he was awarded a grant from the Natural Environment Research Council to study new techniques for tracking the movement of environmental radioactivity in terrestrial environments. Recent work in Fukushima with the University of Tsukuba has focused on the effect of typhoons on the movement of radiocaesium.

Radiocesium is the most serious health risk for the local population, quickly binding itself to fine soil particles. This talk outlines scientific efforts to understand the transport of radioactive soils due to typhoons, and remediation approaches adopted by the Japanese Government.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER Mark Liddiard joined Mott MacDonald in 2016 to take up a leadership role in environmental services for the nuclear industry. Mark has been working as a consultant to the nuclear industry for over 10 years. Previously, he was head of environment for UKAEA and before that for the AWE sites. Mark started his career as an environmental regulator, working for the National Rivers Authority before joining the Environment Agency.

The seminar will examine the drivers for clean-up of offsite contamination arising from historic activities of nuclear sites, and will also look at success stories in the UK where land (and foreshore) has been successfully cleaned up and released for beneficial uses.

The implications of legacy contamination on groundwater control schemes will be discussed and an overview given of the common treatment options.
