ROSENBERG Operations Director Gravitas International Weds | 15.30 | Keynote Theatre 2 Thurs | 12.30 | Keynote Theatre 2 Green Infrastructure, River Restoration & Flood Protection - Flex MSE® Using reinforced earth principles alongside unique geotextiles and patented interlocking plates, strong and easy-to-install geomodular block structures are produced. Installed on 7,500+ projects worldwide and recommended for use on SSSIs by the Environment Agency, Daniel will discuss how Flex MSE is formed into near-vertical vegetated flood berms, green retaining walls and erosion-resistant riverbanks. Flex MSE, exhibited by Gravitas, was the winner of the Flood Expo 2017 Innovation Award.

Weds | 11.00 | Theatre 5 Thurs | 11.00 | Theatre 4 Thurs | 15.30 | Keynote Theatre 2 Unlocking Sites Through Flood Resilient Planning Just like how the motor car influenced planning in the 50s, it is water and climate change that will influence the next generation of city and townscape designs. Yet as policy adapts to these needs, so must designers, planners and builders equip themselves with new tools and skills to meet these challenges. Richard discusses how these obstacles can be overcome.

MARY DHONAU OBE CEO Know Your Flood Risk Campaign Weds | 12.30 | Keynote Theatre 2

FRED DAHL Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer AquaFence AS Weds | 11.45 | Theatre 4 Thurs | 14.00 | Keynote Theatre 2 Temporary Flood Barriers Built to Meet Specific Case Needs Traditionally, sandbags have been seen as the only temporary alternative to permanent flood barriers. During the last few years, multiple new temporary flood barriers have been launched, but only some have been certified and tested. Even today, most tenders asking for temporary flood barriers show a lack of knowledge of the key parameters ensuring a good performance. However, Fred discusses how the leaders in temporary flood barriers today have such know-how, they can build their solution to each specific case.

Is the Flood Protection Industry Heading in the Right Direction?

Stop Flooding Before it Starts: Understanding the Water Management Hierarchy

Simon Crowther, a 2007 flood victim and award-winning engineer, shares his experience of the flood protection industry; taking a look at what is being done well, along with where improvements are required. Increased awareness and education of flood risk are hugely important. Simon has a strong focus on working with communities and believes this could be key to helping improve the country’s flood resilience.

There’s clearly no panacea when it comes to mitigating flood risk. This presentation explores the different methods, techniques and products available to us, from natural flood management to heavy duty precast pipes, which can be combined to create effective flood mitigation systems. It will also discuss how cross-catchment thinking is essential to achieving the best results.

The Committee on Climate Change have warned that the number of people in the UK living in areas at significant risk of flooding could rise from 1.8 million today to 2.6 million by 2050, under a 20ºC climate change scenario. How must our towns and cities evolve and adapt? How and where should we be building? And what needs to change to deliver a fully-integrated approach where the range of responsibilities is complex?

INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY This year more than ever, The Flood Expo has been constructed with a strong focus on highlighting the most state-of-the-art and cutting-edge products available in the industry right now.

Here, we’ve selected just a few of the innovations at the show that are breaking new ground in the global flood sector – all of which will be available to purchase there and then on the day!

HYDRONALIX (Stand 4C10) Sonar Emily

CONCRETE CANVAS

The SONAR EMILY robotic rescue boat uses technology originally developed for Navy EOD and search and salvage divers for use in flood disaster operations. SONAR EMILY is a 1.7metre long surface robot for swift water applications – carrying a high-definition Humminbird Helix SONAR imaging system. This low-cost system is transportable on commercial airlines and takes only minutes to deploy.

(Stand 4E60) Concrete Canvas

STORMMEISTER

Concrete Canvas (CC) is a flexible concreteimpregnated fabric that quickly hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, waterproof and environmentally friendly concrete layer. Essentially, CC is concrete on a roll and is rapidly becoming the channel lining and slope protection material of choice around the world. CC has quickly gained market acceptance as a cost effective alternative to conventional concrete and is typically installed ten times faster - offering cost savings of up to 60%. As an effective weed suppressant, CC reduces future maintenance costs associated with unlined ditches. It also has good weathering performance and doesn’t degrade in UV.

(Stand 4E41) Active Flood Seal

DATV UK (Stand 4D12) Amphicruiser

StormMeister flood doors are the only flood doors using an Active Flood Seal™. The seal is factory fitted all the way around the door, giving ongoing flood protection well beyond 600 mm. There is the added bonus of protection from rainwater ingress, which is a big problem with conventional flood doors only flood sealed around the bottom 600 mm. There’s also no need for elongated ‘wrecking bar’ handles - meaning a property can be flood protected without advertising that the property is in a flood-risk area.

The Amphicruiser is an amphibious emergency response vehicle with the ability to travel safely and reliably through flooded cities to rescue survivors, and deliver aid and medical supplies. It was developed to quickly enter and exit the water without stopping, saving precious time and reducing the risk to emergency responders. There is also no need to switch from vehicle to vessel, as all your equipment can be kept in the Amphicruiser, and it can effortlessly traverse damaged roads or go off-road. The vehicle is able to tow rafts and boats, and can be equipped as a local incident command centre.
