From first experiencing Virtual Reality as a young man, he decided that this would be an area that he would love to work in. Stephen brings over 20 years of experience helping some of the world’s foremost companies to this fascinating, fast paced area.

Xeiad Difficult Access Engineering Inspection of Brunel’s Royal Albert Bridge The construction of the Royal Albert Bridge was famously completed in 1859. Its huge size and towering height means that engineering specialists are required in order to get to every part of this varied structure; engineers employing a variety of difficult access techniques such as industrial rope access, commercial diving, sonar scanning and confined space entry; engineers that can reach the parts other engineers cannot reach… Come to Kimble’s seminar to discover more about this incredible feat of engineering.

Advanced Numerical Modelling in Coastal & Port Engineering

Thurs

DR. MARTIN D HURST

11.45

In this seminar, Scott will survey the current role of numerical modelling in coastal and port engineering, and attempt to predict where it’s heading. As numerical modelling increases in complexity, there is not only a demand on greater computing resources, but also the ability of users to understand the underlying physics and numerics behind the models. To this end, an assessment of the future skill requirements of the next generation of engineers will also be made.

Accelerated Chalk Cliff Retreat Rates in Recent Centuries

Thurs

SEBASTIEN MANCEAU

12.30

Understanding rates of past coastal erosion is vital for assessing future erosion risks at the coast. In this talk, Martin discusses how past cliff retreat rates were measured over millennial timescales for chalk cliffs on the south coast of Great Britain, by interpreting measurements of cosmogenic nuclides. Here, Martin takes a look at the results, which provide evidence for accelerated erosion in recent centuries - possibly driven by reduced sediment supply and thinning of beaches.

Offshore Wind: Decarbonising Energy Infrastructure

Thurs

CHRIS ALMOND

13.15

In this session, Sebastien will take a look at how offshore wind – one of the most scalable renewable technologies - can play a significant role in decarbonising energy infrastructure to help mitigate climate change. The importance of understanding the ground and environmental conditions over vast sites will also be discussed, together with the management of ground risk through efficient site investigations, adapted foundation selection, and the design and installation planning process.

INNOVATION

& TECHNOLOGY Every year, the Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering Expo shines a spotlight on those products that stand out for stretching the boundaries of innovation within the sector. The following devices and gadgets are just a handful of the cutting-edge technologies which will be on display at September’s show - with each one capable of making your projects more efficient and cost-effective.

MARLAN MARITIME TECHNOLOGIES (Stand 4C101) 4D-Synoptic Monitoring Service Synoptic enables hydrographers, dredging contractors, coastal management engineers, ports and windfarms to see change almost as it happens. Whatever the weather (almost), Marlan Maritime Technologies observe the nearshore from the shore, so you don’t need to worry about staff being drowned, or drones, ASVs or quadbikes being destroyed or lost. Synoptic is delivered as a subscription service. They take care of shore-based sensors, which continuously monitor your coast through storms and sunshine and deliver you the processed survey data and supporting metadata every two weeks as standard.

FUGRO (Stand 4C110) WaveWalker 1 Fugro and WaveWalker BV will be showcasing their key innovations in nearshore geotechnical investigations and capabilities in nearshore marine construction. They’ll be bringing along a 1:50 scale model of the highly innovative WaveWalker 1 walking jack-up barge as an example of their ability to design, build and operate their own equipment and provide marine solutions to their clients in the energy and infrastructure market. Mark Richardson, their site investigation expert, is one of the show’s keynote speakers and will be talking about developments in site investigation for coastal infrastructure.

MARINE POSITIONING SOLUTIONS (Stand 4F121) HyDrone-RCV-G2 The HyDrone-RCV-G2 is a one-man, portable, remotely-controlled catamaran platform developed for hydrographic survey applications. Working in conjunction with the HydroLite-TM portable echosounder kit, the HyDrone-RCV-G2 accomplishes the same results as more expensive RC survey systems. The lightweight, wide profile and watertight construction provide stability, ruggedness and portability. It is manufactured from high quality marine materials and components and is easily disassembled for transport and shipping. This ASV utilises Trimble Marine GNSS RTK Receivers to provide high accuracy positioning. 8

KONGSBERG GEOACOUSTICS LTD (Stand 4D92) GeoPulse Compact GeoPulse Compact is a high performance, lightweight and low power digital sub-bottom profiler. The user can choose waveforms in the frequency band of 2-18kHz, and a range of mounting options are available. GeoSwath USV offers efficient simultaneous swath bathymetry and side scan mapping from an unmanned surface vehicle. The wide swath sonar system is simple to deploy and allows surveying in otherwise impracticable locations and situations. PulSAR acquires high-resolution acoustic images of the seabed by using a rugged, easy-to-operate tow fish. Large areas are surveyed efficiently and accurately - ideal for search and recovery operations, underwater inspection and engineering and scientific surveys.
