The management of on farm environmental assets, or natural capital, is often presented as something that happens alongside profitable farming, or something that can only occur when individual farms are profitable. EU exit is likely to considerably alter the basis on which farmers and land managers are rewarded, with an increased emphasis on public goods. Geoff will explore some of the best practices in this area to make the case for farming natural capital.

EXPERT, IMPARTIAL ADVICE FOR YOUR DIVERSIFICATION PROJECT
Diversification into new areas of business – making your land, property and business assets work harder – is increasingly popular and brings new income streams. However, many landowners have been talked into new ventures by salesmen and consultants that then go on to become costly mistakes. It is vital that you have independent, impartial and expert help and advice. And that is where the CLA can help.
The CLA not only has its own advisers in all the core areas you need – land use, legal, taxation, planning and grant schemes – but we almost certainly have members around the country who have already undertaken a similar venture. We understand what income you could realistically earn and, more importantly, we know the potential pitfalls. All this advice is free to CLA members. Ensuring you have adequate funding for your diversification project will be critical. CLA advisers are able to help members identify the relevant sources of funding including grants and financial instruments. For example, a Dorset member saw the opportunity to set up a tourism business providing luxury holiday cabins within a woodland setting. By guiding him through the grant process for tourism funding, the CLA was able to help identify the type of grant that would be required to make his dream of providing luxury visitor accommodation a reality. Furthermore, he was able to create additional income by
12
providing a variety of sporting and leisure pursuits including paintballing. With any diversification project, it is highly likely that you will need to consider whether planning permission will be required. CLA professionals can advise on planning issues. For instance, a Wiltshire member who intended to let a dwelling as holiday accommodation contacted the CLA after his local planning authority insisted that he required planning permission for change of use. CLA advisers were able to clarify the situation from the planning authority’s point of view and recommend how the member should respond. The delighted member thanked the CLA for its “very comprehensive reply”. Other common areas for landowners setting up a business to think about include: business structure, tenancy issues, employer’s responsibilities, tax issues such as registering for VAT, contracts and agreements, health and safety as well as environmental issues.

THE AMAZON ACADEMY HERE TO HELP YOUR RURAL BUSINESS MEET ITS DIGITAL POTENTIAL CASE STUDY One of these successful rural Amazon Marketplace sellers is Karen Riddick, owner of Second Nature, based in Dumfries, Scotland. Second Nature now exports homeware products around Europe and generates roughly £350,000 annual turnover. “As someone who runs a successful business that’s two hours from the Scottish mainland by ferry, my message to rural small businesses is that there are no geographical limits to e-commerce. There’s huge opportunity for our rural economy, and I look forward to encouraging other small business owners in taking their first step into the digital world.” The Amazon Academy offers practical support to help small rural businesses, artisans and tech start-ups succeed in the digital economy. Over two days, rural businesses will get practical ‘how to’ advice on using e-commerce to enhance their customer experience, boost revenue, improve productivity, and increase their exports. Rural businesses will also hear from entrepreneurs and small businesses who have found success online, offering their advice based on their own experiences of how to harness the power of the internet and technology to boost revenue without having to move operations out of rural areas. Amazon have also invited winners of the Rural Business Awards to attend and tell their success stories, and Rural England will be hosting a round-table discussion on their research into how to unlock the digital potential of rural areas in the UK.

Women are Raising the Steaks!
Diversifying in Farming, Finding Your USP and How to Get Your Product Out There
Target the Market with Added Value Arable Crops
High Value Truffles: How to Cultivate Them on Your Land
A brief story of how three ladies became embroiled in the world of meat – from ostriches in the nineties, to Mangalitza pork now! They discuss the trials and tribulations of farming, raising, killing, butchering and selling rare and unusual meats. In 2001 Rachel and Jeannie formed their own company, expanding their range of products to include other exotics such as kangaroo, crocodile, antelope and zebra as well as ostrich.
Emma will be discussing how to find your USP launch and get it to market, how to make the most of PR and marketing opportunities and how diversifying in farming doesn’t mean you have to be large scale or pump in hundreds of thousands of pounds to be successful. She will talk about drive and determination and how she gained planning permission with an eviction notice on their site when they moved in. She will also talk about the pro’s and con’s and how to do this without EU funding.
Successful marketing relies on understanding customer needs. A small adjustment to the arable crop species and varieties grown in UK rotations can add significant value to the end product. Value that is reflected in the premiums that are available to growers. In this seminar, Nigel Padbury explores the range of speciality arable crops and varieties on offer to British growers and demonstrates how that value can be captured with minimal alteration to current farming practice.
This seminar will discuss what truffles are, how much they’re worth and the conditions needed to cultivate them. Dr Paul Thomas will discuss all aspects of the truffle business including technical requirements such as soil conditions, considerations such as set-up costs, resource requirements and grant availability, and expected yields, income and product distribution channels. The seminar will also explore the latest research around how climate change will impact truffle production.

Win, Win. Managing Environmental Assets in the Farm Business
8 Lessons from an 8 Figure Business Owner
Geoff Sansome Natural England
James Sinclair Entrepreneurs Network
The management of on farm environmental assets, or natural capital, is often presented as something that happens alongside profitable farming, or something that can only occur when individual farms are profitable. EU exit is likely to considerably alter the basis on which farmers and land managers are rewarded, with an increased emphasis on public goods. Geoff will explore some of the best practice in this area to make the case for farming natural capital.
During this presentation you’ll learn about the vital numbers businesses need to track every month. Why a business turning over £1-2 million is in the “sweet spot” and even if the business owner doubles revenues, the cash they take home every month might stagnate or even fall. Why some businesses NEVER make it to eight figures, and what he did to find the cash needed to fund rapid expansion.

Target the Market with Added Value Arable Crops
Patrick Kielty holidaycottages.co.uk
