ROSS WOODS

A FRESH START FOR DESIGN FLOOD ESTIMATION IN UNGAUGED CATCHMENTS WEDNESDAY | 12.30 | THEATRE 6 Ross is a reader in water and environmental management at the University of Bristol. In 2013, Ross moved to Bristol from New Zealand, where he had more than 25 years’ experience in flood estimation, flood forecasting, and assessment of the impacts on floods of climate change and land-use change. He led numerous multi-agency research and consulting projects on floods and many other aspects of catchment hydrology scale (total £5M). He has published more than 60 research papers on hydrology using a mix of field measurements, simulation modelling and theoretical developments.

At Bristol University, Ross is programme director for the MSc in water and environmental management. His current research focuses on the use of classification and similarity techniques for regional and global hydrological processes, especially in ungauged catchments.

A Fresh Start for Design Flood Estimation in Ungauged Catchments Current design flood estimates for ungauged catchments are unreliable; we need better methods! The standard methods can often be wrong by a factor of two. Under-design causes excessive flood damage costs, while over-design leads to unnecessary capital investment in flood protection. Ross will suggest how we can improve flood estimation by combining classic and modern flood analysis concepts with an understanding of flood processes, using both UK and international examples.

WILLIAM MONTGOMERY

WEDNESDAY | 11.45 THEATRE 6

WHY LEADERS AND MANAGERS NEED TO MASTER STORYTELLING William will show how narrative can spark the imagination and galvanise people into action better than dry data alone - making storytelling a tool that leaders and managers can use to transform numbers, research and analysis into compelling, motivating images.

Brexit comes with risks but also opportunities. With a focus on our wider environment, and a replacement for the UK’s Common Agricultural Policy being planned, Innes discusses how catchment management is the key to creating better, more integrated solutions not only for flood risk, but also for our management of water as a valuable resource. Now is the time to take action across the established local partnership working arrangements. THURSDAY | 14.45 | THEATRE 6

WIND INDUCED UNDERCATCH ON RAINFALL MEASUREMENTS: IMPLICATIONS ON FLOOD FORECASTING THURSDAY | 11.45 EA THEATRE 4

DR PAUL WEBSTER

THE BENEFITS OF COMMUNITY-BASED FLOOD WARNING SYSTEMS Over 700 flood warning systems have been installed by Hydro-Logic Services to support communities and local authorities at risk from flooding. This seminar will describe the typical installations and discuss the circumstances in which they can provide a real benefit to those at risk. It will also discuss how the data collected by these systems helps with understanding flood mechanisms and provides test data for flood forecasting models.

WEDNESDAY | 14.15 | THEATRE 3

Rainfall measurements are currently prone to substantial undercatch due to wind related errors. As the wind approaches the rim of the rain gauge it accelerates, removing a percentage (as much as 20%) of the rainfall that would have been collected in the device. This seminar will look at how, when inaccurately measured, water balance and flood warnings are all subject to error.

ROLE OF HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY IN MORPHOLOGICAL MONITORING AND FLOOD FORECASTING Increasing occurrence of floods indicates the importance of improving the morphological monitoring and flood forecasting system. Hydrographic survey results are an integral part of this system, and are a basis for creation of the digital mathematical model in flood forecasting. Dino discusses how the survey should be done periodically in order to keep the model updated and accurate. Various survey methods could be included in the hydrographic survey process.

WEDNESDAY | 11.15 THEATRE 5

JOEL ZIMELSTERN Scientific evidence gathered over many years, and from a wide range of sources, supports the view that treeplanting in upland areas can help reduce flood risks as part of a broader package of natural flood management measures. Such tree planting can also provide benefits for carbon sequestration, wildlife and local employment. This presentation will set out the latest information available on the role of tree planting in mitigating flooding.

DR. PETER MELVILLE-SHREEVE

DELIVERING SUSTAINABLE DRAINAGE USING RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEMS THURSDAY | 12.45 THEATRE 3 The SuDS Manual and Welsh SuDS Standards both firmly promote rainwater reuse as the primary rainwater management option. However, evidence from 500 responses to CIWEM’s Big SuDS Survey shows that rainwater harvesting uptake remains low. Pete will explain a range of designs which can be used to achieve both SuDS objectives (i.e. control peak discharge rates) and minimise potable water demand for houses and commercial buildings. Peter is a qualified Research Engineer at TWENTY65/University of Exeter .

ADC Drainage

SILT PUSHER BOAT

FLOOD EXPO

LIVE DEMOS ON THE THAMES

The Silt Pusher is ADC’s newly purchased piece of equipment from Holland. It makes light work of drain and de-silting problems. The silt pusher, basically a floating bulldozer, vastly improves drain clearance quality even with difficult access. Ultimately it saves our customers time and money. The perforated dozer blade is mounted to the Silt Pusher boat with hydraulic height and angle control, making clearance of differing drain widths very easy. The blade is pulled through water, or on top of silt, by a powerful winch within the boat and 300m of cable tethered to the embankment beside the excavator.

The best way to truly understand a product’s potential and evaluate its performance is to see it in action with your own eyes. That’s why at the Flood Expo, eight of the most forward-thinking companies in the industry will showcase their latest innovations along the banks of the River Thames; just outside the show’s venue. Featuring over both days of the event, these exciting demonstrations give attendees the opportunity to not only watch the cutting-edge products in action, but also question their creators and designers. Amongst this year’s phenomenal lineup of demonstrations is the likes of Vikoma’s flood boom; Borger’s rotary lobe pumps; Brokk’s remote controlled demolition machines; and Tideman Boats BV’s versatile HDPE workboat. These sessions will run alongside the show’s comprehensive seminar and workshop schedule and are sure to leave any flood professional brimming

RAPID EASY TO INSTALL LOWER PROJECT COST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY Concrete Canvas (CC) is a flexible concrete impregnated fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, and water proof concrete layer. Essentially, it’s concrete on a roll and is rapidly becoming the channel lining and slope protection material of choice for engineers and contractors around the world. CC has quickly gained market acceptance as a cost effective alternative to conventional concrete. Typically installed ten times faster than laying pre-cast slabs or pouring in-situ concrete, CC offers cost savings of up to 60%. As an effective weed suppressant, CC reduces future maintenance costs associated with unlined ditches. CC can be provided in man portable rolls negating the need for plant equipment, reducing vehicle movement and contractor burden. Unlike shotcrete or gunite rebound is not an issue. CC has a low alkaline reserve and low washout rate, so can be installed directly into live watercourses. With twice the abrasion resistance of OPC Concrete, CC has good weathering performance and will not degrade in UV. Used by leading contractors on projects for Network Rail, Transport for London, Highways England, Environment Agency and local authorities, simply unroll the CC and...
