Q&A
EXPORTS & THE USA
EXCLUSIVE Q&A THE YOUNG AMERICAN EXPAT: EXPORTING TO THE USA WHAT IS THE YOUNG AMERICAN EXPAT PROJECT?
HAS BREXIT AFFECTED HOW AMERICANS FEEL ABOUT THE UK AT ALL?
Young American Expat is the digital showcase of the lives of the 9 million Americans living abroad, highlighting the stories of those who are currently abroad in their 30s and 20s, as well as those who no longer are “young” but have since established themselves to be successful Americans in their respective fields overseas.
2016 was an interesting time in the global market, as many were caught by surprise by the UK’s Brexit vote and the USA’s election of President Trump. With respect to the UK, because of the uncertainty in a post-Brexit world, a noticeable effect of Brexit has been the fall of the pound. This has made British goods and services cheaper than it was before Brexit and helped with British exports in the present term, as the UK currently has a trade deficit. For many markets, which include the USA, doing business with the UK at the moment, given the value of the pound, has been much more attractive. In its own right, the UK is still the world’s 5th largest economy. And if NAFTA gets renegotiated or even scrapped, American exporters may find it harder to do business with Canada and Mexico, which might make other countries like the UK more appealing.
WHAT IS THE MARKET FOR UK EXPORTS IN THE USA? The UK and the USA have strong cultural and business ties, stemming from before the USA became an independent nation. Both countries share a similar culture and have a common language. Even today, the USA represents the UK’s largest trading partner (if you do not count the EU countries collectively). This is evident across a wide range of sectors that the UK exports many of its goods and services to. For instance, the UK and the USA are home to the world’s only two Alpha ++ cities (cities most integrated with the global economy): London and New York City. Both cities in their own right are world renowned leaders across a wide range of industries – this includes the financial, fashion, retail, media, and professional services sectors.
WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE FOR UK BUSINESSES SELLING INTO THE US? KNOW YOUR MARKET – The USA is a big country. Many assume that all of America is practically the same. However, the sheer size of the country both in population and territory suggests otherwise. Do not assume that people in New York City will be the same generally as
those from California or the Midwest. The USA is made up of 50 states, each with their own cultural behaviours and history. In addition, the USA is very spread in terms of various ecosystems and sector clusters. For instance, a company looking to sell to the USA must understand where their potential clients are but also where the value chain is. This will play a huge part in terms of where a new exporter is looking to focus their efforts in attracting new business in the USA. GO TO MARKET – Not just with the USA but as a general rule in exporting, one must not assume that they can just make a sale by one simple phone call from their home country. Be prepared and willing to go to market, in this case wherever the opportunity will be in the USA. Many new exporters might find this surprising but Americans overall value relationships. Part of that is a commitment from any potential supplier to the American market and it can go a long way that a new UK exporter came all the way to the USA to try to win business. GROW YOUR MARKET – Americans usually like to think big and results matter. Do not be modest with your achievements, both you as an individual and also the company you are representing, when you are in the United States. The idea of the American dream is one anyone can achieve!

POLITICS & GLOBALISATION
EXPORTING CHALLENGES OF SMEs IN AN ERA OF GLOBALISATION AND POLITICAL CHANGES The scope of this article is three-fold. First, we need to consider the importance of SMEs. Second, drawing upon the conclusion from the first, we identify the effects of the recent political changes in the UK, i.e. Brexit. Third, we review exporting challenges and barriers for SMEs and look at future directions they can follow. Why are SMEs an important part of the economy? There is no doubt that small businesses are one of the driving forces behind job growth. In this progressive era of globalisation, despite their small-scale output and low-scale economies, SMEs are a significant contributor to employment growth and innovation. For large firms, SMEs represent a place where their future competition will come from. However, for individuals and the economy of a country they represent the hope for new jobs in the market, and the launchers of new ideas. They are a factor of balance at the micro and macroeconomic level. And although SMEs produce all these benefits while still operating locally, experts argue going global should be any small to medium sized business’ short-term goal. If they only sell in the UK marketplace to domestic business’s and consumers, they are faced with an economy that is flat-lining. What does Brexit mean to international trading? The effects of Brexit on the British economy are still debated intensively, particularly because it is still not clear what kind of exit deal the UK will
get. The frustration of this factor is especially critical for SMEs, whose development and growth depends on a country’s economic relations. This is one of the main reasons why going global has become a crucial strategic choice for SMEs in this uncertain political climate. When looking at trade operations, at the moment, the European Union is the destination for 50% of all British goods exports. A surprising fact is that if we take into account the countries that trade freely with Britain because they have free trade agreements with the EU, the ratio increases to 63% of Britain’s goods exports which are linked to EU membership. However, the effect of Brexit on trade fully depends on the deals Britain will make with the EU and non-EU countries. What are the exporting barriers SMEs are facing and can they be overcome? Exporting requires SMEs to have an international orientation. Each business with an interest in exporting overseas needs to have an ability to understand the effects of different global scenarios and trends. This is vital in order to identify threats and opportunities that impact the future growth and competitiveness of SMEs. Reaching international markets has become
extremely difficult as SMEs compete against the well endowed multinational organisations. Large firms have lots of resources such as managerial know-how and export departments that allow them to conduct export activities at a mature base, while SMEs need to conduct several market research studies prior to entering a new market. However, this special dynamic between SMEs and large organisations shouldn’t be seen as a competition, but rather as the natural way of the business world where each forms their unique role in the economy. The question that arises in the end is: what are the ideal strategies that small and medium-sized firms should employ in going international? The answer is: there are none. We will always have times of political uncertainty and economic crisis. The best thing you can do - both as a business and entrepreneur - is to develop from the beginning a global mindset. Having a global mindset can help you reshape your perception about export barriers. Rather than see others as competition, embed yourself in networks and affiliate with firms that have already been successfully exporting within your industry.
A surprising fact is that if we take into account the countries that trade freely with Britain because they have free trade agreements with the EU, the ratio increases to 63% of Britain’s goods exports which are linked to EU membership.

LATIN AMERICAN TRADE & INVESTMENT ASSOCIATION
TIME FOR BRITISH SMEs TO LOOK AT LATIN AMERICA AS UK-BASED BUSINESSES CONTINUE TO EXPLORE NEW TRADE OPPORTUNITIES ACROSS THE GLOBE IN PREPARATION FOR LIFE AFTER BREXIT, LATIN AMERICA IS ONE MARKET THAT OFFERS SIGNIFICANT PROSPECTS FOR BRITISH COMPANIES. While it’s still unclear how the commercial deals will play out after Britain officially exits the EU, the potential to increase customer numbers and revenue by doing business in the fast-emerging Latin American economy is something many British SMEs are already taking advantage of. Between 2011 and 2016, the number of British small businesses exporting goods to the region almost doubled; from 11 per cent in 2011 to 19 per cent last year (source: Federation of Small Businesses). A study by RSA Group in February 2016 also found that almost 60 per cent of small business owners consider the region to be their best market export opportunity. That’s why, at November’s Going Global Live in London’s Olympia, experts from
24
the Latin American Trade & Investment Association (LATIA) will be on hand to provide invaluable guidance on trading with 19 different nations within Latin America. Whether you want to discover more about doing business in Argentina’s exponentially growing economy; are interested in the renewable energy opportunities offered by Brazil; or are attracted to trading in the politically and economically-stable Chile, you’ll find the answers to all your questions at Going Global. With several Latin American countries having already expressed an interest in striking free trade deals with the UK - and these developing nations shifting towards a more capitalist model due to
globalisation - more and more British SMEs consider the likes of Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela to hold the key to trading successfully post-Brexit. In fact, the needs of these Latin American countries, as they move from emerging markets to global players, perfectly match some of the existing strengths and specialities of the UK economy: finance, construction, engineering, pharmaceuticals, mining, security, environment and cleantech. So if you’d like to break into the Latin American economy and do business in some of the fastest-growing economies on the planet, Going Global Live is the must-attend event of the year for you and your company.
