DE-RISKING OFFSHORE RENEWABLES PROJECTS BY LIFETIME CONSIDERATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS
Benjamin is a senior marine consultant and chartered marine scientist at Royal HaskoningDHV and based in Edinburgh. Ben provides strategic and technical advice on a wide range of marine environmental topics including benthic ecology, fisheries, underwater noise, marine mammals, shipping, and environmental compliance. Over the past eight years, Ben has worked in various offshore industries including offshore wind, tidal, transmission, oil and gas, commercial fishing, aggregate dredging, and harbours. Through this experience, he has gained valuable insight into the considerations required for a wide variety of project types.
SEMINAR SNAPSHOT Environmental considerations can place considerable design constraints and can result in onerous financial burdens on offshore projects if not properly planned and managed. Continued consideration of environmental constraints, through a projects lifecycle can have significant de-risking and cost saving benefits. This seminar will discuss using examples (primarily from the renewables industry) of where a proactive approach to considering soft-constraints can positively impacted development programmes, consenting, financial burdens, and ultimately the environment.
SEMINAR SNAPSHOT Every seminar is listed in the following pages, so simply turn over to begin your search for the seminar which is essential to you. There’s no need to book for any of our seminars, but due to their popularity and the demand to see them, places go quickly, so make sure you get there early in order to avoid disappointment. Don’t miss out! Get there early.
With the commonly accepted sea level rise predicted by IPCC and UKCP and the increase of storm frequency and severity, low-lying cities and towns along the Welsh coasts are under increasing threat of coastal erosion and flooding. This seminar presents the results of flood dynamics predicted by the state-of-the-art computer model for the Welsh coasts, particularly with the detailed flood maps and analysis in the flood-prone area centred at Rhyl in North Wales.

SEMINAR SNAPSHOT Stephen’s presentation will focus on the importance of understanding the influence of geology and geotechnics through appropriate investigation and design. This is required to inform the selection, design, construction, and future resilience of a scheme. Through a number of case studies, the influence of the three Es – engineering, environment, and economics - will be described, all of which need to be satisfied to ensure the success of a project.

Marine Recreation and Tourism Study for Marine Scotland (2016) We undertook Scotland’s first national survey of marine recreation and tourism, using a web-based questionnaire and spatial data collection system to collect information on the coastal activities people value. The work concluded that annual expenditure on marine recreation and tourism contributes up to £3.7 billion to the Scottish economy. It will inform marine planning and help direct future investment.
Seascape Character Assessments for England and Wales (2013-2016)
Following our first Seascape Assessment for the South Marine Plan Areas in 2014, we have completed seascape character assessments for the South East, North East, North West, and South West regions of England. In addition, we completed the National Seascape Assessment for Wales in 2015. Together, these studies will culminate in a complete classification and description of national Marine Character Areas for England and Wales, providing evidence on seascape to help inform marine and coastal planning.
Advice on Offshore Development Casework (since 2012) We provide independent seascape and offshore advice for proposed marine infrastructure developments for a range of statutory agencies and decision-makers. For example, we acted for Natural England in relation to the Atlantic Array, Rampion, and Navitus offshore wind farms, seeking to mitigate impacts on designated landscapes and heritage coasts. The work included negotiation with developers, preparation of representations, and representing Natural England at examining authority hearings.
From various locations across the UK, we offer expertise in the following areas: • • • • •
