EXPERT SPEAKERS NOT TO BE MISSED Neurology is going through constant, positive change which keeps the European Neuro Convention at the forefront of the industry. By securing the sector’s leading neurological experts and academics, it enables the Convention to be Europe’s only trade event dedicated to brain and spine experts. The speakers have been specifically chosen to offer a broad wealth of knowledge, to ensure there is a seminar for every visitor and their field of expertise. The speakers from internationally renowned institutions, will cover topics influenced by progression in the industry over the last 12 months, such as cognitive mapping during awake surgeries for patients with brain tumours. The following pages will display the complete speaker lineup for the Convention, listing times and location, allowing you to make the most of your time the event.
WEDS | 11.45 | THEATRE 6 | DIAGNOSTICS Dr Yaara Erez is a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Cambridge. As a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellow, the focus of her research is the brain systems that support executive function in health and disease. In her clinical research, she develops new techniques for functional mapping during awake surgeries for patients with low grade gliomas. The aim is to optimise the balance between resection and preservation of cognitive
function to achieve high quality of life following surgery. Dr Erez is trained in computer science, psychology, and systems neuroscience. She uses multiple techniques in her research, including functional MRI, electrocorticography (ECoG) and computational methods. Combining multiple modalities is key in her approach in order to obtain detailed picture of the underlying neural mechanisms and tailor treatments for individual patients.
COGNITIVE MAPPING DURING AWAKE SURGERIES FOR PATIENTS WITH BRAIN TUMOURS Some patients with low grade gliomas undergo awake neurosurgery to remove the tumour. During surgery, patients perform different cognitive tasks to guide the resection and preserve essential cognitive function. I will present our recent efforts to develop new patient-tailored techniques for intraoperative functional mapping, and particularly using electrocorticography (ECoG) to identify neural activity related to executive function, with the overall aim of achieving high quality of life following surgery.

TUES | 15.30 | THEATRE 2 | REHAB
LEADING PROFESSOR OF CLINICAL NEUROPSYCHOLOGY
CORPORATE AND COMMUNITY LIAISON MANAGER FOR STOKE MANDEVILLE
Professor Gus A Baker is Emeritus Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology and honorary Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist.
Ali sustained a spinal cord injury in 1996. She went on to study at the University of Nottingham and graduated in 2006 with a first class honours in Psychology.
He has spent the last 30 years dividing his time between clinical research and practice. He has authored over 250 papers, chapters and books on understanding the impact of epilepsy and its treatment. Professor Baker has received the BPS life time award, the Barbara Wilson Award and Lord Hastings Award for his contributions to, Psychology, Neuropsychology and Epilepsy.
Ali is passionate about peer support and maximizing the outcomes of rehabilitation following spinal cord injury and other long-term neurological conditions. She has proven experience of academic and clinical research, clinical trial management, peer support, mentoring and public speaking.
THE ADDITIONAL BURDEN OF EPILEPSY: A PSYCHOLOGICAL AND NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE Epilepsy is a recognised consequence of an acquired brain injury. However, there is often little recognition of the substantial additional burden the condition brings for the individual or their family beyond the head injury. This is despite an extensive literature of the physical, psychological and neuropsychological sequelae. In this presentation, the author will consider the impact of epilepsy and its treatment and how that might be ameliorated. WEDS | 13.15 | THEATRE 7 | MENTAL HEALTH
SPINAL CORD INJURY; THE UNSEEN COMPLEX COMPLICATIONS – NEUROPATHIC PAIN Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) results in total or varying degrees of loss of sensation and motor function below the level of injury. These aspects of SCI ‘seen’ by others. However, there are many complex, chronic issues that are ‘unseen’ e.g., neuropathic pain, bladder and bowel function, spasticity, pressure ulcers and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Such complex aspects of SCI often co-exist, fluctuate over time, are unpredictable and are often more debilitating than the ‘seen’ aspects of SCI. This seminar will describe the ‘seen’ and ‘unseen’ complications following SCI using a visual analogy. The negative impact of the ‘unseen’ aspects of SCI on a person’s quality of life will be described. Neuropathic pain will be discussed in more detail.
Having first-hand experience of living with the impact of spinal cord injury, Ali is committed to supporting research that aims to improve people’s quality of life following spinal cord injury. Ali is the Corporate and Community Liaison Manager for Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research; an independent charity that is committed to conducting research with the aim of improving the quality of life for people living with spinal cord injury.

DR NICHOLAS SILVER
DR CAMILLA NORD
CONSULTANT NEUROLOGIST AT THE WALTON CENTRE NHS TRUST
SPECIALIST IN THE ROLE OF DORSOLATERAL PREFRONTAL CORTEX DYSFUNCTION IN DEPRESSION
TUES | 14.00 THEATRE 6 | DIAGNOSTICS
TUES | 14.00 | THEATRE 8 | BRAIN STIMULATION
Dr Silver, a Consultant Neurologist at the Walton Centre NHS Trust, has been a Principal and UK Chief Investigator for a number of research clinical trials in headache disorders. This led him to establish a dedicated nationwide referral headache service, for severe and refractory headache disorders. He maintains clinical and research interests in migraine, trigeminal autonomic cephalgias, comorbid sleep disorders, and non headache manifestations of migraine.
MORE THAN JUST A HEADACHE, MORE THAN JUST PRESCRIBING DRUGS The WHO consider migraine as the most disabling disorder worldwide in under 50’s. Migraine may present with headache but commonly headache is not the presenting complaint. Recognising migraine as a cause of non-headache symptoms increases therapeutic opportunities. This seminar will focus on differential diagnosis of headache disorders, non-headache manifestations and presentations of headache disorders, and new and merging ways to optimise successful treatment.
THURSDAY | 11.00 | B2B KEYNOTE THEATRE 1
Dr Camilla Nord is a neuroscientist and MRC Investigator Scientist at the University of Cambridge, MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit. Her research works to uncover the brain mechanisms of mental health disorders using neuroimaging and neurostimulation, and tests whether
any of these mechanisms could serve as “biomarkers” that might help us predict response to different treatments. Prior to this, she completed a PhD at University College London on the role of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex dysfunction in depression.
NEUROBIOLOGICAL PREDICTORS OF RESPONSE TO TDCS-ENHANCED PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPY IN DEPRESSION We conducted a randomised controlled trial to test whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would enhance clinical response to cognitive behavioural therapy in depression. We showed a 20% improvement of real over sham tDCS, which was not significant. However, we found that baseline dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation was specifically associated with response to tDCS. This could potentially have use as a “biomarker” identifying patients who might respond to tDCS.

CHANGING SOCIAL PROCESSING WITH NON-INVASIVE BRAIN STIMULATION Recently there has been considerable interest in using non-invasive brain stimulation to aid performance in typical and atypical groups. One example is the field of social processing, where non-invasive brain stimulation has been suggested to support the perception of one’s own affective states (e.g. mood) and those others (e.g. emotion perception). In this seminar we will explore and discuss the implications of evidence related to this claim.

PAEDIATRIC BRAIN INJURY: OUTCOMES AND PREDICTORS OF LONG-TERM PROGNOSIS Acquired brain injury is the leading cause of death and neurologic disability in children after infancy. In the immature brain, there is a complex interaction between recovery and ongoing development making children more vulnerable than adults despite the advantage of early neuroplasticity. Relatively good motor outcomes may obscure cognitive and behavioural problems, worsening the child’s quality of life and long term educational attainment. Predicting long term outcomes is challenging due to the heterogeneity of injury and non-injury factors.

BRAKING BAD: DEVELOPING ECCENTRIC CONTROL IN CLIENTS WITH CNS DYSFUNCTION
SUPPORTING PATIENTS WITH COMPLEX PHYSICAL IMPAIRMENTS FOLLOWING BRAIN INJURY
TUES | 11.00 | THEATRE 2 | REHAB
Eccentric muscle contractions are the brakes of the movement system. In the normal gait pattern, the majority of muscle contractions are eccentric, yielding remarkable efficiency: harnessing momentum and ground reaction forces, minimizing the energy cost of walking. In individuals with neurological injuries, movement impairments impede the ability to generate eccentric contractions or to time muscle contractions correctly, yielding co-contraction and inefficiency. We will identify how these impairments impede postural control and gait ability and how to specifically address them using voicing as a mechanism to promote eccentric muscle contractions in intervention programs to minimize negative effects on gait and maximize walking performance. Video cases will allow participants to view application of these methods using a variety of therapeutic handling techniques and functional tasks.
Based on 14 years of clinical practice specialising in Brain Injury, Clare and Jo will highlight the challenges faced in treating patients with complex physical impairments and how the interdisciplinary team can work together to optimise a patient’s physical abilities.
