SAEBO: SPLINTING, ELECTRICAL STIMULATION, EXERCISE, FUNCTION AND MORE…
THE IMPACT OF UNDERLYING TIMING MECHANISMS TO NEUROLOGICAL RECOVERY.
Historically, upper limb rehab was extremely thin on the ground in the UK, with therapists quoting that their patient had ‘reached a plateau’. This seminar asks if we can get about 80% of stroke survivors to walk again, why can’t we get anywhere near that figure for functional arm/hand rehab, post-neurological event? Join Glyn as he traces the Saebo story in the UK from its start in the early 2000s, right up to the present day.
As professionals, it’s important to understand the impact that the timing of events, such as a motor act followed by a sensory consequence, is critical for moving, speaking, determining causality, and decoding the barrage of temporal patterns at our sensory receptors. This presentation will address advances in technologies as they reveal the role of millisecond auditory stimulation as an internalised timekeeper for rhythmic patterned movements in neurological rehabilitation.

In this seminar, we will analyse the effects of these technologies on patients and explore the possibilities they bring to clinicians.
WORKSHOP Bioness
JUNE 2014 NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION
DYNAMIC DE-WEIGHTING AND FES WORKSHOP During the UK launch of the Bioness Vector Gait and Safety System, we will provide practical demonstrations of how the Vector integrates with hands on neurological rehabilitation and functional electrical stimulation. Be amongst the first to see and experience new, groundbreaking technology at the UK launch of the Bioness Vector Gait and Safety System. The Vector is a ceiling track-based system that precisely offloads bodyweight and automatically tracks the patient during overground walking, pre-gait, balance and functional activities. During normal gait, a person’s centre of mass moves in all three planes: sagittal, frontal and transverse. The Vector uses overground dynamic bodyweight support that enables the patient to replicate
natural kinematic movements in all three planes without the fear of falling. This stands in direct comparison to robotic and static offloading systems, where the patient is placed in a relatively fixed position. Bodyweight support has traditionally been restricted to treadmill based gait training or cumbersome mobile gantries. Let us show you how the Bioness Vector can lift the ceiling on possibilities for you and your patients, and place control fully back in your hands. We can lighten the load for patients and
clinicians, but also provide a route for progression and outcome measurement. Using wireless, touch screen control, we can easily increase or reduce offloading during activities to make the task more challenging for the patient. Integrating the Vector with the renowned Bioness L300 Plus and H200 Wireless functional electrical stimulation systems (FES) for gait, balance and functional activities can deliver new treatment opportunities and enhance outcomes.
Really challenge patients and push boundaries in a safe, fall-free environment

Experience has taught us that restoring an individual’s quality of life following a catastrophic injury or after they experience a neurological condition is more often limited by the resources, attitudes, beliefs, structures and processes of our health and social services than it is by any fundamental lack of knowledge about how to implement healthcare. Whilst FES has been recommended in the NICE guidelines for managing foot drop, little research has investigated the effects of FES cycling in MS. We recorded the functional and quality of life changes observed in a sample of MS patients following a 1 month trial of the RT300 FES ergometer (Restorative Therapies Inc., Baltimore, USA).

Derek Jones, PhD, MBA Anatomical Concepts (UK) Ltd, UK The Barrier Restoring an individual’s quality of life after they experience a neurological condition is more often limited by the resources, attitudes, beliefs, structures and processes of our health and social services than it is by any fundamental lack of knowledge of how to implement healthcare. Lack of financial resource in the system can act as a barrier. Other barriers exist too. The question is, how can these barriers best be surmounted? Is it all about technology?

JUNE 2014 NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION
How The Right Software Can Bring Success
The market in which you operate is becoming more competitive and your patients more knowledgeable and demanding. In these difficult times, it’s crucial that osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists running a modern practice can identify the factors that ensure success over the long term. One of the major considerations when starting out is choosing the right computer software. A fully integrated practice management system can reduce paperwork, save time, and increase revenue. Some clinics spend almost as much time managing their business as they do actually seeing patients, it’s important that technology decreases that burden. Whether you’re upgrading an existing system or starting from scratch, making the right decisions now can save time and money later on.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SOFTWARE There are a number of key considerations when choosing software. Essential features include diary management for practitioners, rooms and equipment, plus appointment reminders by text or email as well as confirmation by letter. Billing needs to be flexible with the option to invoice insurance companies directly. You should be able to securely record clinical information and store photos and scans, and have the
ability to create your own forms and letters. Postcode lookups and online authorisation of credit card transactions are also very helpful in a busy clinic. If you get lots of enquiries through your website, you might want to link your website with your software so that leads go straight on and can be followed up immediately for better customer service and improved conversion rates. USING YOUR PATIENT DATABASE FOR EFFECTIVE MARKETING
Your aims are simple: to attract plenty of enquiries, encourage them to come in, and then persuade them to return as frequently as necessary! You can achieve these aims by capturing data effectively and then using it to target the right people, with the right message, through the right channel. A good software package will allow you to use a combination of direct marketing
JUNE 2014 NEUROLOGICAL REHABILITATION
techniques, such as targeted emails, texts and mailshots. Intrusive marketing is out, but patients always welcome carefully targeted messages on relevant subjects. Even if all you want to do is send a monthly newsletter with updates on your practice and useful tips, a modern software package should allow you to easily keep in touch with your patients. ACCESSING INFORMATION ON THE MOVE In the modern world, it’s essential that you can access your software whilst on the move, from an iPhone, iPad, smartphone or laptop. Many software packages offer the option of a secure hosting service. Data is held in the cloud and accessible on the move, given access to the internet. An additional benefit of secure hosting is that software can be updated, so you know it will never go out of date. Patient data should be securely backed up without having to think about it or the possibility of hardware failure. TRAINING, SUPPORT AND HIDDEN FEES Finally, make sure your software provider offers both initial and ongoing training in a way that is easy for you to access. Ongoing support is also crucial and should be available at a level and a price to suit your business. Be sure to look out for hidden costs, such as extra charges for basic functionality. SO WHY CHOOSE E-CLINIC? e-clinic is the smart choice whether you’re starting out in practice, moving from paper, or upgrading your existing computerised system. Everyone from individual practitioners to large clinics and
healthcare chains uses it. You can install it on your own PC, Mac or server or choose secure hosting in the cloud. Cloud hosting means you can access e-clinic on the move from your laptop, iPad, or smartphone. At e-clinic’s core is an intuitive clinic management package that allows fast appointment booking, flexible billing, secure recording of clinical data, complex reporting and great marketing. There’s no limit to the number of users who can securely log in, and no limit to the number of practitioner diaries you can set up. As well as booking appointments for practitioners, you can also create diaries for rooms and pieces of equipment, meaning there’s no chance of double-booking a scarce resource. Appointments can be synched with Google Calendar, Outlook, iCal and your iPhone, meaning easy access to your diary while on the move. Reminding patients about their appointments is simple and can be done by text or email, as many days before the appointment as you wish. Billing in e-clinic is fast and straightforward. Set up a price list and charge for treatments and products, calculate profit and work out practitioner commission. Apply variable pricing, by clinic, insurance company, NHS or practitioner. You can manage stock levels and e-clinic provides barcode support and alerts when you run low of any item. You can create invoices to third parties including insurance companies and submit them electronically via Healthcode. It’s simple to generate quotations for patients and later convert them to invoices. You can even manage supplier invoices and payments within the software. When you make clinical notes, they are logged with the date, time and

practitioner. You can create your own clinical forms with check boxes, radio buttons and drop down lists, or if you prefer, we can design bespoke forms to your specification. Clinical forms also allow you to mark areas of pain or treatment onto an image of a body. You can do this using an iPad or a mouse on a standard PC. It’s also simple to attach documents including photographs, lab reports, x-rays, PDFs, emails and video clips to the patient record. e-clinic includes a comprehensive suite of reports to help you keep on top of your business. Reporting on enquiries, appointments and financial data is simple. You can easily find out where patients come from, what treatments they’ve had and how much you’ve charged. All reports can be grouped in different ways, perhaps by practitioner, clinic or marketing source. You can view all reports as graphs or charts, making it easy to understand complex data. You can export data from your reports to Excel for further analysis, or integrate with third party reporting tools like Crystal Reports.
AT A GLANCE Mark Lainchbury is Technical Director and founder of e-clinic and been a leading figure in practice management technology since 1997. e-clinic is the leading clinic management package in the UK and is used by everyone from individual practitioners to hospitals and large healthcare groups. Hundreds of clients including chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists rely on the software for the smooth running of their practices.
Larger clinics, or those which have more than one site, may also benefit from additional features like online booking, website integration and multi-clinic management. Ensuring that your business has a stable foundation is crucial to success in this competitive market. Advances in technology have, for the first time, made the paperless practice seem within reach. Getting it right from the start is the first step to success.
