PROF. DR. WALTER BINI
WEDNESDAY | 14.45 | THEATRE 10
HOW PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT IMPACTS TOURNAMENT DURABILITY IN ELITE HOCKEY International hockey teams are measured by their success at major tournaments and these are often played in challenging environmental conditions. A players’ capacity to recover between matches (that can be played on successive days) is critical. Given that acute recovery interventions will only support this to a certain degree, it is vital that the gap between a player’s on-pitch requirements and their physical capabilities are minimised. This talk explores how the Great Britain Olympic Hockey Teams identify what physical characteristics are necessary for optimising performance and how they identify the gaps between a player’s training status and their competition needs.

How can a collection of individuals perform to a level far greater than the sum of their parts? Answers to these questions are often shrouded in mystery or based on opinion and anecdotal evidence. Yet, the psychological processes that lie behind what is really going on in a team isn’t something mysterious; it can be understood from the extensive body of research found in this group psychology scientific literature. In collaboration with the Centre for Team Excellence and Sussex University, Will headed a research group that spent three years extending this research and applying it to sports teams. THE RISE OF THE MACHINES. 1. BIOTECHNOLOGY IS SWAPPING DRUGS FOR DEVICES Ever since ancient Greeks used electric fish to treat pain, devices harnessing electrical impulses have been used to improve health and save lives. As the body of evidence grows, athletes are increasingly turning onto the power of electro technologies to treat injury, improve recovery and increase strength. When, in 2013, GlaxoSmithKline announced it was developing miniaturised electronic devices for peripheral nerve stimulation, it marked a step change in the ascent of electrotherapy from twilight to the mainstream and was a major milestone in a string of successes for the fledgling electroceuticals field. BioMedical engineers are now developing new generation devices targeting conditions underserved or untouched by drugs, and, unlike marine life and electrical therapies of the past, design of these neuromodulation devices is now being guided by the detailed knowledge of neurophysiology and molecular mechanisms. In this first seminar exploring how BioTechnology impacts athletic endeavour, three time Olympian Leon Taylor gives his unique career perspective on the lines between incremental gains and marginal losses in elite sport. Illustrated by his own athletic experiences and his mentoring of elite athletes, he examines some of the challenges and choices now facing modern athletes and asks if hacking the body’s electricity grid is heralding a brave new world of clean performance enhancement.

performance that include infrared thermography, foot pressure mapping, myotonometry and tensiomyography. A regular speaker and lecturer at International Sports Science conferences, he is currently writing ‘Sports Biometry: application of technology for Sports Science’.
The value of the electroceuticals and bioelectric medicine market is expected to reach $25.20 Billion by 2021. With regulatory approval for new and advanced devices allied to an influx of increased funding and investments for developing novel therapies, electrotherapy is rapidly moving from the medical margins to the mainstream. Using electrical impulses that modulate the body’s neural circuits, biomedical engineers are generating the tools and maps to build better, more targeted neurostimulation devices as an alternative to drugs. How far are we from having these targeted “electroceuticals” and what gains or advantages will they bring to Elite Sport? In the second of PainPod BioTechnology’s series looking at the future of bioelectrical power in human performance, applied sports technologist Antonio touches the nerve on clean performance enhancement and explores how using biotechnology, combined with an increasing understanding of electrical stimulation therapies for the peripheral nervous system, could change the face of athletic performance.

THE NEW PSYCHOLOGY OF HIGH PERFORMING SPORTS TEAMS
STRESS IS STRESS - STOP COMPARTMENTALISING YOUR THINKING ABOUT TRAINING
The profile of disability sport has risen greatly over the last few years, thanks in part to events such as the London 2012 Paralympics and increased commercial exposure of athletes. According to participation figures from Sport England, disability football is the 7th largest team game in England in its own right. The expansion in playing numbers supports a Disability Player Pathway, including a number of talent programmes and England impairment squads. This seminar will give an insight to the diverse and challenging world of elite disability football, covering the successes and challenges of working in this environment from working on the pitch to dealing with international federations to identifying players within the impairment classification framework. An overview of the current talent structure will be discussed along with the support mechanisms in place to support the game.
We tend to think of someone performing a rotator cuff exercise using a 500g weight to be rehabilitation and someone benching 200kg as being maximal strength training - yet both of these are the exact same thing: resistance training. During this talk I will discuss how smart people make really stupid training decisions by trying to be over complicated or thinking in ways that lead to convoluted training programmes and objectives. The goal of training is to take a biological system from one state to another by the systematic and strategic application of stress. The only way to deliver a ‘holistic’ training programme is to understand what these stresses are, how they interact with each other and how they should or should not be applied. It is essential to have an in-depth and pragmatic knowledge of theory and practice to allow you to cut the crap and get to the heart of the problem. Let me help you cut the crap.

MECHANOTRANSDUCTION, NEUROPLASTICITY AND FORCE TRANSMISSION. FASCIAL FACTS AND FICTION
It is without doubt that fascia has become more than just an ‘in vogue’ name in the manual therapy world. This rise to fame has brought a barrage of fascial therapies myofascial self-care approaches and fascial tools all with their own claims of releasing and stretching fascia and breaking up adhesions. New types of therapists and therapies are evolving as the internet provides accessible knowledge where fascial fact and fiction have twisted their own network throughout social media, blogs and online conferences, just like modern day Chinese whispers. Some of this fascia knowledge naturally glides across your screen whilst others create a mind-boggling adhesion of fallacy. The truth is, no one really knows for certain what exactly fascia does. What we do know, we have gleamed from supposition, hypothesis and probability. But – we are going in the right direction.

SENIOR RESEARCH SCIENTIST FOR NSF INTERNATIONAL THURSDAY | 14.45 | THEATRE 9 John Travis has more than 20 years of experience as an analytical chemist specialising in the analysis of dietary supplements. As Senior Research Scientist at global public health organisation NSF International, Travis analyses hundreds of dietary supplement products each year for various contaminants, emerging drugs and harmful compounds.
BALANCING INNOVATION AND RISK IN SPORTS NUTRITION INGREDIENTS Sports nutrition supplements are one of the fastest growing and most innovative categories in the dietary supplement industry, but this growth and innovation can create significant risk. What’s stopping unscrupulous suppliers from marketing untested ingredients as the “next hot thing”? Can these ingredients be safely used in a sports nutrition supplement? Could the ingredient cause your customers to test positive for banned substances? We will explore these issues and some of the solutions NSF International has to offer.
Cathy Brown is an ex-professional British boxer, sporting Performance Coach and cognitive behavioural therapist. Cathy was in the vanguard of professional women’s boxing in 1998 and works with passion and determination to promote equality for women in sport and other heavily male dominated environments. She spent 10 years at the top of her professional field winning English and European titles and becoming ranked number three in the world in arguably the most gruelling and demanding sport there is - fighting not only within the ring but outside the ring trying to gain respect and acknowledgement within an excessively sexist sport. She has worked within sports as an athlete and coach for 20 years and she now uses her expertise to develop her clients’ mental and physical strength, and to provide much sought-after comment to international press and media outlets. www.cathybrown.co.uk
Utilising techniques ranging from gas chromatography to high-performance liquid chromatography to mass spectrometry, John has developed and validated analytical methods for numerous marker compounds and trace contaminants. He is an active member of the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC), participating on expert review panels for Carotene and Lutein, and is a member of the AOAC stakeholder panel for Dietary Supplements. Travis is also a subject matter expert on athletic banned substances and was instrumental in the development of the screening methods used for the NSF International Certified for Sport® programme, which now screens products for more than 230 banned substances on the World Anti-Doping Agency, National Football League, Major League Baseball and National Collegiate Athletic Association lists. Travis is currently involved with the analysis of pharmaceutical agents and illicit drugs, stimulants and other prohibited substances as both adulterants and contaminants in dietary supplements and functional foods, co-authoring scientific papers on ingredients of concern including stimulants drugs DMAA, DEPEA and DMBA found in dietary supplements. The work of John Travis and the laboratory staff at NSF International are essential to NSF’s Dietary Supplement and Certified for Sport® Certification programmes, which help consumers and retailers identify safer supplements that have been analytically tested to confirm the label contents and verify that they are free of harmful drugs and many other contaminants.

LIGHT THERAPY MASTERCLASS Why medal winners Mo Farah, Matt Centrowitz and Galen Rupp used the NovoTHOR at the Rio Olympic Games. Using Light Therapy to reduce fatigue, increase strength and improve recovery. How it works, why The Nike Oregon Project choose to use it for their athletes. Clinical trials and results from training and the Olympics. The treatment is called photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) and it works on mitochondrial respiratory chain components to reduce oxidative stress and increase ATP. Thirty three randomised, controlled clinical trials (RCTs) show unequivocally that PBMT reduces fatigue, increases strength and improves recovery. A further 100 RCTs show that the same treatment improves tissue
repair, reduces inflammation and induces analgesia in acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries and degenerative conditions. NovoTHOR is a whole body PBM Therapy system that has been designed to deliver optimal wavelengths, power densities and dosages based on published clinical research. STRENGTH TRAINING AS A FOUNDATION FOR PERFORMANCE be undermined
Strength training is the use of external resistance to increase the tension/intensity of muscular contraction. Strength training has been shown to increase: muscular size, strength, bone mineral density, speed, power and to decrease the incidence of injury in athletic populations. As with all training the principal of progressive overload (doing more with time) is the primary way that athletes can continue to improve their strength. Progressive overload and increase strength can be achieved through manipulation of intensity (weight on the bar), volume (total weight lifted during the session/week), frequency (times per week) and vairence (performing different exercise). Improvements in strength occur as a result of the body’s adaptation to the new training load, showcasing noticeable differences in the power, composition and flexibility of the trainee. Strength training is a great way of Improving body competition. An athlete will burn more calories at rest as a result of increased lean mass one of the main by produced of strength training. Since muscle is metabolically active tissue it increases the body’s resting calorie output. Hypertrophy also induces what people refer to as a “toned” look, this is caused by more pronounced lean mass which is very noticeable in leaner individuals. The Elite Sports Performance & Rehabilitation Expo will have a whole host of experts from the sector of strength training and conditioning. Among the leading speakers is Adam Mattiussi, the Strength and Conditioning Coach at The Royal Ballet School & The Royal Ballet Company. Adam will deliver a thorough insight into the physical demands of ballet and how strength and conditioning is essential for optimal performance.
performance attributes. Without it, running faster, jumping higher and simply remaining protected from the rigours of a sports technical training would undermined.’ Hypertrophy and general power exercises have been heavily held responsible for enhancing sports performance but optimal performance from training requires a specific exercise program in order to yield optimal results. It is essential that appropriate plans are created in accordance to the trainee’s role, current level and focused to work on the demands that the sport they are competing in requires. The rewards from assigning and instigating effective strength training will be an improvement in health & performance and an increased resistance to injury. Marc Keys is the Head Coach of Edinburgh Barbell, Former S&C Coach at Edinburgh Rugby and Scottish Institute of Sport. It is his mission to make the world a stronger place. He’ll be speaking at Elite Sports Expo and is a big advocator of strength training, saying: “Strength training is the foundation
upon which all other bio-motor qualities are founded. The ability to produce force quickly, resist external forces applied to you, to move your own body in space, to move other bodies with ease or to project or throw objects... all of these abilities are expressions of muscular strength and coordination. Without muscular strength, it is impossible to stand from your chair and walk over to the other side of the room. Strength training is without question the most important form of training or physical activity an athlete or person can do. People who lift weights or perform resistance training are literally a different species from those who don’t. They run faster, jump higher, get injured less often, are fitter, live for longer and in general are just more awesome. If strength and conditioning research tells us one thing it’s that lifting is awesome- Lift weights, be awesome(er) it really is that simple.” Physically resilient athletes who are training and performing at an optimal level are the most successful, and at The Elite Sports Performance & Rehabilitation Expo, the most progressive and influential names behind the best athletes shall be taking to stage to share how you can emulate their success with your own strength training plan, revealing the tips and expertise you need to excel. A selection of exhibitors will also be in attendance to provide you with the equipment necessary to perform and carry out your bespoke training regime.
Tom Whittaker of British Weightlifting shall be sharing his experience from being part of two Team GB quadrennial cycles that achieved Gold, Silver and Bronze medals across the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, revealing how the development and application of real world strategies for strength training helped his athletes succeed. Head of Physical Preparation at England & GB Hockey, Andy Hudson will be speaking at the Elite Sports Expo about ‘how physical development impacts tournament durability in Elite Hockey’. When it comes to improving performance, muscle is the word on everybody’s lips, Train muscle strength and power, and performance improvement follows. While this may be true, recent research is now showing that with proper training and care, the once called “Functionless” Fascia ,can also help with improving performance. The Fascial system, like the nervous system runs through the whole length of the body, and rather than being just a “holding” organ, it actually has a sensory function, which when functioning properly improves balance, proprioception, and reaction speed among other physical markers. Fascial Integration Training is an approach where performance is improved by Stabilising the Core, Performing Functional Movement Exercises and following Self Myofascial Release Routines. This can all be achieved in any training environment with just one tool, the Weighted RAMroller.

Inspirational Friends is an organisation created by Hannah Lawton that takes on various challenges and adventures each year in memory of her inspirational friend Elle, who sadly lost her life to cervical cancer at the age of 23. Inspirational Friends have taken on a host of challenges so far, notably in 2013, when they faced their hardest test - the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The 60+ days, 3000 miles and 50 foot waves challenge proved to be too much when on their 96th day they made the difficult decision to call for assistance following a series of mechanical
failures. Having learnt a lot from the last attempt, in December 2017, Inspirational Friends will take to their oars once more, raising money for two incredible charities and crossing that finish line. At The Elite Sports Performance & Rehabilitation Expo, Hannah will be speaking twice; ‘Try, Try Again - The Mentality of Returning From Failure’ - a seminar looking at how to challenge your perception of what failure is and walk away inspired to try something new, without fearing to fail, and ‘Why Talent ID - Does It Reliably Predict a Solid Athlete?’ - a look into the role of a Talent ID Coach and question your own beliefs as to who the ‘right person’ is. Hannah will be welcoming sponsorships for their boat Sedulous. With Inspirational Friends’ coverage of their challenges reaching in excess of 3 billion people across 40 countries and being featured regularly on the BBC, Discovery Channel, National Geographic and in publications such as The Telegraph, this presents a fantastic opportunity for coverage and exposure for anyone looking to support the fantastic Inspirational Friends. She’s offering a special sponsorship package to Elite Sports Expo exhibitors, so make sure you ask her about it at the show - she shouldn’t be hard to miss!
