GRAHAM CORFIELD
Graham has been instrumental in helping grow JUST EAT to its current market-leading position, both in the UK and across Europe.
With 17,000 restaurants and nearly 40% of online traffic to all takeaway websites in the UK, it seems that more than one or two of us paid attention when a London based online takeaway business told us, “Don’t Cook, JUST EAT!”
Graham Corfield is the UK Managing Director of JUST EAT, having moved up from the Finance Director’s chair. Graham has been instrumental in helping grow JUST EAT to its current market-leading position, both in the UK and across Europe. In the UK, Europe’s biggest takeaway food market by some margin, JUST EAT works with more than 17,000 delivery restaurants and accounts for 39% of online traffic to all takeaway websites through its award-winning “Don’t Cook, JUST EAT” TV and digital campaigns. The company now operates in ten of the most attractive European takeaway markets and globally in selected high potential countries such as Canada and Brazil.
JUST EAT is setting the pace in developing the wider market, launching its ‘mobile-first’ strategy earlier this year with the release of its new Android and iOS apps. As a result, the business is already seeing a third of orders coming through mobile devices. Graham says, “We’re already the leaders in the UK, but there’s lots of potential for growth still to come. Mobile in particular is a really exciting market. I’m looking forward to helping our team do even more to empower consumers to love their takeaway experience.”
With his background, Graham has a wealth of experience in operational and commercial issues, acquisitions, and integrations. Previous roles include Finance Director for Grass Roots EventCom PLC
and divisional Finance Director at Unigraphics Solutions. Graham graduated from Loughborough University with an Honours Degree in Accounting and Financial Management.
SEMINAR HALL 1 Friday 12.30 - 13.00
Developing And Growing Your Business With Technology In this seminar, Graham Corfield will share how JUST EAT has grown globally, through offering over 18,000 restaurants and takeaways a platform to tap into the rising consumer trend of ordering takeaway using online and mobile. Explaining the benefits of printed media, this workshop will go in-depth on the dos and definitely-do-nots of direct mail. And, of course, household door drops aren’t the only way to use printed marketing materials.

There are many creative ways to use print media, and maybe there are applications for your business that you aren’t currently exploiting. exactly how the principles behind effective direct mail and printed media marketing can be applied to your business. The workshop goes into detail on choosing your target area, tailoring your branding and design for maximum impact, and combining print with the online marketing you’re already using to achieve the greatest success. INNOVATION N’ TAKEAWAYS With so many innovations to understand and explore that could completely change the way takeaways operate, it’s an exciting time to be involved with such a thriving industry.
While most industry sectors are struggling in a challenging financial climate, it seems that the UK’s takeaway industry is weathering the storm well. It’s worth a staggering £10billion annually, showing a growth of 1.7% every year in the last five years. In fact, the average British consumer now spends over £100 a month on 12 takeaway meals, which equates to more than £1,300 a year. So it should be no surprise that takeaways have grown by 8.2% in the UK’s top ten cities, with the most successful brands being Domino’s, growing their portfolio by 50%, Eat at 36.4% and Prêt A Manger with 29.7%. The humble sandwich, that British staple of lunch breaks everywhere, is worth in the region of £3.5billion in the UK alone. Leading the charge has been Subway, who now have more than 1,400 stores in the UK alone - almost a fivefold increase in eight years. Pizzas and sandwiches are winners, while Burger King has closed many of its stores in the same period, but what of other cuisines? It seems there has been strong uptake in what you might call ‘middle-class’ takeaways offering healthy meals based around fresh vegetables, spices and low calorie options. This class of customer has been hit in the pocket of late, so where they would have dined out, they now choose the cheaper

option of ordering in when they don’t want to cook after a day at work. Apparently, these consumers don’t want something smothered in batter or fat to go with their glass of new world white. Now that Chinese has replaced fish n’ chips as the nation’s favourite takeaway, what does that mean for takeaways? Our research shows that British consumers are increasingly looking for a broader variety of options on the menu, with a palette that is keen to explore international dishes. But restaurants have been reluctant to invest in new equipment specifically aimed at individual cuisines, in case they don’t prove to be popular with their clientele. Few small businesses can afford to experiment if the cost is prohibitive, explaining why most of the catering businesses we’re in contact with favour multi-purpose equipment. As utilities bills continue to rise, energy efficiency is becoming
increasingly important to buyers when considering their next purchase of catering equipment. With refrigeration units operating around the clock and ovens on heat for hours at a time, incremental savings soon accumulate. Many of the kitchens we’ve spoken to have told us that one of their top requirements when the time comes to replace equipment will be to realise a demonstrable reduction in monthly operating costs. We’ve also had anecdotal reports of the rise of the group buy, with independent takeaways pooling resources to boost their buying power when negotiating with suppliers. It’s not a new tactic, but we’re told that independents are more willing to cooperate since the start of the recession, in a bid to maximise profit margins. Of course, the big innovation in the takeaway sector in
recent years has been the internet and online ordering. A recent survey showed that 44% of UK restaurant and pub groups can offer delivery and/or takeaway from online orders. It’s only a matter of time before the remaining 56% catches up. And when they do, they’ll be looking for fully functional, scalable solutions from customer interfaces to payment solutions and order tracking. Technology has also brought social media marketing to businesses everywhere, including the takeaway sector. Many takeaways are realising the benefits of contacting their clientele in a sociable environment like Facebook or Twitter, deepening relationships and improving loyalty. And the really switched on ones are looking at geo-location tech, which enables them to message customers and prospects in the vicinity with time-critical offers or deals.

Creative email marketing is included in the package to enhance repeat business.
On top of that, the site is home to a broad repository of news and advice on every aspect of the buying process, with articles, how-to guides, interviews, videos and podcasts updated on a daily basis by a dedicated editorial team. BusinessesForSale.com understands that buying a business can be a daunting and often confusing process, regardless of how many times you have done it. A key aim of the site is to offer help and reassurance every step of the way, whether you’re starting a business for the first time or a seasoned buyer looking for clarification on a particular issue.
Whether you’re an old-hand at buying a business, or a first timer selling a start-up, it can be hard to know where to start. If only there was an online resource packed with all the information you need! It’s a good job BusinessesesForSale.com had the same idea… Businessesforsale.com is the world’s most popular website for buying or selling a business – and with good reason. Working with business brokers, as well as thousands of private sellers, BusinessesForSale.com houses the largest selection of businesses for sale in the world.
Why buy a takeaway through
BusinessesForSale.com gives you a distinct advantage in the early stages of the business buying process, as our users can attest. Alex Gardner bought his dream business - a florist in Southampton - through the site, and believes BusinessesForSale. com gave him the leg up he needed, “Email alerts were particularly useful,” He says, “These gave us an advantage that led to us buying the business. We were the first in the queue to buy and as a result, we were ahead of the game compared to the others who were interested!”
Why sell your takeaway through BusinessesForSale.com? “I found this site very helpful.” says Mohammed Bhuyain, who sold a chicken, kebab and fish
and chip shop through the site. “Within a month and a half [of first listing the business], the business sold, thanks to BusinessForSale.com.”

alone, with everything from a seaside fish and chip shop in South Glamorgan to a highvolume, fast-moving pizza delivery business in the heart of London.
Selling a business is tough in most circumstances, let alone during the most sustained period of economic turmoil in living memory. Buyers are thin on the ground and competition is fierce. But with over 15 years’ experience in connecting buyers and sellers of businesses, BusinessesForSale.com is best placed to help you sell your business and realise your wealth. Reaching over 500,000 business buyers and one million monthly visitors, BusinessesForSale.com is optimised to give your business maximum exposure, placing you front and centre in the biggest shop window in the world. And, if you are looking to sell a takeaway business, there’s a database of 80,000 hungry buyers waiting for a business like yours. On top of targeting those looking to buy a business, BusinessesForSale.com uses social media and e-marketing campaigns to appeal to a huge, untapped market of potential buyers, who otherwise wouldn’t have considered business ownership as a career option. Most importantly, advertising your business through BusinessesForSale.com is no fuss and low cost. Nick Crabb sold a licenced bar and coffee shop in Crowborough, Kent in April 2013 through the site. He says that BusinessesForSale.com is, “Very simple to use and easy to edit as and when necessary,” Going on to add that the site is, “Fantastic value for money and our advert generated loads of enquiries!”
BusinessesForSale.com? BusinessesForSale.com currently lists over 1000 takeaway businesses for sale in the UK

fashion, allowing our clients to have a solution tailored to their requirements that they can adapt as their needs change.
CONTENT MATTERS Most digital displays have management systems put together around bulk advertising over a large spread of displays, suitable for large advertising firms. We concentrate around messages and delivery for companies on their own premises, talking to their own customers, which is a very different activity altogether. We are not an advertising firm,
but dynamic message and content specialists. Does your content attract attention and help people read your message? Or does it look like a poster slideshow, which people don’t notice? We work with the latest technology to bring dynamic content and movement to the displays, including time of day, event triggers, news, clocks, and live twitter feeds. Content is king, a picture speaks a thousand words and motion video attracts. Engage with your customers; don’t leave them wanting. Make that impact and keep them talking about you!

THE LOYALTY CARD THAT’S ALWAYS IN YOUR POCKET
Everybody’s familiar with loyalty card schemes, but how many times have your customers lost one or left it at home? That wouldn’t be a problem if they could use their mobile phone instead… What retailers, restaurants and takeaways most need is an easy, effective way to keep customers returning. We have a great solution: our new electronic loyalty system called YouGET shows your customers that you appreciate them by rewarding spending. It builds your relationship with consumers and encourages return visits in a friendly way, whilst attracting new customers.

This is how it works: customers who make purchases or respond to marketing are immediately rewarded with a virtual ‘stamp’ or voucher delivered via QR code. The customer uses their smartphone (or go online) to scan the stamp onto a ‘virtual’ card. When the customer gets a full card, they turn it in for a reward. Each business sets its own value for how to earn stamps and what reward is earned.
The electronic stamp card has many advantages; it can’t be lost, you can tell how many stamps customers have at all times – and encourage them (via mobile phone notification etc.) Card almost full? Send a reminder that it will expire soon. Haven’t seen a customer in a while? Send them a voucher to promote a return visit. YouGET can go beyond the individual business, allowing cross promotion among local firms and support from branded suppliers marketing directly to consumers. The smartphone is the place to reach consumers today. Most have them, more are getting them daily and everyone keeps their mobile handy. Also, YouGET is integrated into the national what’s on, shopping and eating out website, localsecrets.com, which provides economical support marketing.

CAN YOUR RESTAURANT SUPPORT MULTIVENDOR EPOS? EPOS has the power to transform the way your outlet operates, but are you making the most of it, or do you struggle to integrate different systems? These six factors will help you determine if your takeaway can support multivendor EPOS. It’s not uncommon to find restaurant chains using a mix of EPOS systems as varied as their menus: old and new, open source and proprietary, cloud and on-premise. There are a lot of reasons for this. Systems age at different times and are replaced by new solutions from new vendors. That replacement sometimes takes place at an individual restaurant, which then ripples across a franchise group or across a region. Whatever the reason, restaurant chains of all sizes, as often as not, serve themselves a fresh garden medley of EPOS.
These diverse IT environments can deliver good value. But we’ve also seen that heterogeneous EPOS is not right for every organisation. Successful multivendor EPOS environments require strategies, skills and resources devoted to maintaining diverse IT.
SIX QUESTIONS TO ASK Is a diverse EPOS environment the right choice for you? Let’s look at a few of the things to consider when answering that question.
Visit Maitre’D EPOS at Stand T241 at the Takeaway Innovation Expo to learn more, or visit http://info.maitredpos.com/multivendor-restaurant-pos to download our complete insight guide on Multivendor EPOS.

| TAKEAWAY INNOVATION EXPO NOVEMBER 2013
1) Feature mismatch: do I
4) Integration: who brings
need to implement EPOS best
everything together?
practices enterprise wide?
The list of external business decision systems with which EPOS integrates is broad: loyalty programmes, supply chain and inventory systems, online reservations systems, property management, and more.
EPOS delivers better ways of managing, organising and executing day-to-day operations. Some EPOS functionality has strategic impact on the business. With a diverse EPOS environment, you can’t implement those best practices or take advantage of new technologies across the entire business.
2) Analysis and Reporting: where does the reporting take place? Strategically, EPOS is all about the data - for analysis and reporting - that drives business decisions. Multivendor EPOS works well for companies that integrate EPOS data sources into their enterprise business intelligence system for reporting. With a single vendor solution, data from every location is analysed in standardised reports without having to create adapters, map data fields, or engage in any additional IT work.
5) Knowledge: do you have the expertise? Companies that succeed at integrating multivendor EPOS into their data network possess an expertise deep and broad, encompassing networking, security, databases, versioning, load balancing - not to mention the administration and operation of each solution.
6) Marketing programmes: who handles marketing?
cost of diverse EPOS?
If lean IT is the trend, lean marketing is the rule. The single strongest imperative to marketing success is leverage. Campaigns that work must be shared, data gathered must be merged and analysed, offers adjusted to region or location, and every pound spent stretched as wide as possible.
Multiple EPOS solutions each carry recurring maintenance costs. Companies where multivendor solutions work well absorb all the costs of maintaining multiple EPOS solutions into their integration organisation. Companies without that organisation have to absorb those costs themselves.
For more than 20 years and for over 20,000 customers, Maitre’D by Posera has been part of both diverse and standardised environments. We’ve integrated seamlessly into larger infrastructures and we’ve created smart system migration plans for companies wanting to standardise.

MINIMUM COST... MAXIMUM IMPACT
MINIMUM COST… MAXIMUM IMPACT! Food & Drink International, the voice of the industry, remains one of the most trusted sources of information for the food and drink sector. Increased innovation and a more favourable financial climate has ensured 2013 has been a highly profitable year for many food and drink businesses - and Food & Drink International has helped many celebrate their success. The foodservice sector has proven particularly vibrant and it’s an area that is often featured in the magazine’s pages. It regularly examines the new products and ingredients available to caterers and hospitality providers that offer both quality and value, as well as reviewing the new software that allow for greater traceability and safety in the sector, as well as the latest innovations in stock control, storage, display and packaging. Launched back in 1997, the magazine continues to offer the same formula that has proved hugely successful from the very first issue - combining incisive editorial with informed comment from many of the major names in the industry. Numerous blue chip companies advertise in its pages, knowing it is the perfect platform to reach an informed and interested audience. Readers of Food & Drink International are often the first to know about the latest product innovations, contract wins and trade shows that can have a vital impact on their business’ competitiveness. Food & Drink
International aims to ensure its readers are one step ahead of their rivals and can keep fully briefed on all the major issues affecting the industry. The printed magazine remains at the forefront of Food & Drink International’s success, which is read by thousands of individuals at many leading companies. It is available via subscription and also distributed at many of the industry’s leading exhibitions, such as lunch! and The Restaurant Show. It is also published online at www.fdiforum.net, allowing advertisers to enjoy huge and valuable exposure. This combination means that advertisers can enjoy extra support and value from their display advertising with a host of additional free incentives as part of the package deals available - making the message work, on various platforms, again and again. Steve Fisher, Editor of Food & Drink International, says, “Food & Drink International is the complete guide to this fast-moving, innovative and highly specialised industry! Based around incisive and authoritative information and opinion, it provides the ideal opportunity for companies to showcase their products and services to a sector hungry for new ideas.” Food & Drink International is one of the flagship publications of Business Link Magazine Group, one of the UK’s leading independent publishers. More information on the magazine can be found at www.fdiforum.net.
