APRIL/MAY 2015

irst-time visitors to the Greater Palm Springs area arriving along the eastbound 1-10 Freeway often tell us that they are amazed to see thousands of windmills as they enter the Valley. If you've been fascinated by these massive structures (also called wind turbines), you should consider a tour with Palm Springs Windmill Tours. They offer the only windmill farm tour in our Valley that is endorsed by the Desert Wind Energy Association. Tours are offered in the comfort of their state-of-the-art, air-conditioned bus. Tours lasting between 1.5 and 2 hours long are scheduled seven days a week at 9am, 11:30am, and 2pm. On the tour, you'll have an opportunity to view a historic photo gallery chronicling the evolution of windmill design, explore hands-on exhibits of failed machines and study the faults in their designs, drive behind the fences onto a private working wind farm and stand face to face with the largest windmill in the Coachella Valley, and California! Their expert guides will walk you through various exhibits to show you the latest technology in wind power generation as well as solar generation and natural gas power plants. Tours start in their building, located on a working wind farm next to Interstate Freeway, I-10. There is some walking involved, so

F

we suggest that you dress appropriately for that day’s weather and wind. We also suggest closed shoes so sand does not bother your feet. However, the amount of walking is up to you. You do not have to exit the bus for the walking part of the tours if you do not wish. Palm Springs Windmill Tours is located at 62950 20th Ave, Palm Springs, CA 92262. Call them at 1-800-531-5834 or visit windmilltours.com for more info.

Annual Music Festivals Insider tips to help you get the most out of Coachellafest and Stagecoach! very April, a series of music festivals take center stage in the Greater Palm Springs Area. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (simply referred to as Coachella) and Stagecoach, California's Country Music Festival, are both put on by the concert promoters Goldenvoice and take place at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, CA. Coachella will be held on April 10-12 and 17-19, while Stagecoach will be April 24-26. Whether you are a seasoned veteran, returning to the desert for another year of world-class music, or experiencing one or both of the festivals for the first time, here are some insider tips to help you get the most out of the experience! Have you ever wondered why Coachella and Stagecoach wait until right before the festival to announce their set list? They actually have a really good reason, and it is you! Once you create an account on their website and purchase a ticket, you are allowed to select your favorite bands. Goldenvoice then accumulates everyone’s preferences and gives priority to the most popular bands. That way, they don’t put two extremely popular bands in the same time slot on different stages. However, this system isn't perfect and you still may have to make a choice choose between performers.

E

20

APRIL/MAY 2015

Each day, you'll want to check the weather forecast. The festivals will take place rain or shine so make sure you are ready for anything. Pack everything from sunscreen and hats for the sun, to jackets for rain or a bandana for the wind and dust. Furthermore, our desert experiences very large temperature fluctuations each day. Temperatures can swing 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit between daytime highs and nighttime lows. This means that if the high is 80 during the day, it can drop below 60 at night. So bring a sweater to stay warm once the sun goes down. If you are driving to the festival, all people in your vehicle must have a festival wristband. As you approach the Empire Polo Fields, most roads will be blocked to regular traffic. Some parking lots will only allow you to make right hand turns into the parking area. Therefore, it's best to look at a map to determine your best approach rather than relying solely on GPS. Also, if you have four or more people driving in your car to the festival, make sure to participate in "Carpoolchella" and "Stagecoach Carpool Convoy". Participate by writing those words on a 8x11 (or larger) piece of paper before you head to the festival and leave it on the dashboard of your car. You can also write it anywhere on your car, as

long as it is large and visible. A secret spotter will be roaming the parking and camping entrances throughout the weekend. At random times, they will approach participating cars who may be eligible to win prizes. Prizes include everything from merchandise vouchers to VIP passes to the festival for life! One of the most important things to bring with you is a clear plastic water bottle or camel pack. Desert temperatures climb rapidly during the day. Between the heat from the sun and all the dancing you'll be doing, it's critical to stay hydrated. There are quick refill water stations throughout the festivals that allow you to fill up your water container, fast and free! Everyone wants to be safe and have a good time. Therefore, everyone is subject to a search upon entering the festivals. Check the websites to see what is, and is not, allowed into the festival. Some things are self-explanatory, such as no firearms or drug paraphernalia. However, you may be surprised that some things like blankets and selfie sticks are not allowed. But most importantly, have fun! Enjoy the music, the art, and the people. Visit www.coachella.com and www.stagecoachfestival.com

Welcome to Greater Palm Springs

Like many full-time residents of the Greater Palm Springs ngs area, my first experiences with the region involved work and vacations. I was fortunate to have a job where re I accompanied auto dealers at special events all over the country, including frequent trips to the Palm Springs area. I always enjoyed coming here. In addition to o great weather, there’s a perfect mix of amenities and d things to do without the stressful hustle and bustle of the big city. That’s why, when I had the opportunity to live anywhere I wanted, I chose Palm Springs. In fact, t, I decided where I wanted to live before I decided what at I was going to do for a living. In 2002, I was ready to be my own boss. That’s when en nI discovered the Travelhost Opportunity. It’s the best be est decision I ever made. Over the past twelve years, visitors tors to Greater Palm Springs have come to depend o on n Travelhost for reliable, information on the best attracacctions, dining, shopping events and more! Travelhost ost of Greater Palm Springs is placed free in hotels els and visitor centers. I am privileged and proud to represent Travelhost in the Greater Palm Springs gs market and look forward to many more years of serving our visitors.
