Sustainable Hospital Award
PRESENTED BY
The environment in which people live and work, has a key influence on their health. This award recognises the NHS hospital that has made progress towards sustainability through the smarter use of energy, transport, waste management etc in order to strive towards a reduced impact of healthcare facilities on the environment.
H Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has the secondlargest backlog of repairs for any hospital in the country with its buildings and infrastructure well beyond their expected life. Under such circumstances, sustainability and buildings carbon savings is challenging but the new sustainability team have turned it into an opportunity to bring efficiencies and improvements. This includes zero carbon emissions from electricity consumption, zero domestic waste to landfill, 25 tonnes of food waste turned into green energy, and mandatory sustainability awareness training course developed for all staff.
H Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has become the first NHS Hospital Trust to officially become Carbon Literate, allowing it to take an important step towards its goal of becoming one of the greenest NHS trusts in the UK. The trust’s Sustainability Team has been working closely with the Carbon Literacy Project since April this year as part of a new initiative to deliver the first Carbon Literacy training specifically focused on healthcare and the NHS, to help its staff become Carbon Literate. Amongst the pledges, LTH has promised to establish an energy reduction strategic steering group and write a carbon reduction strategy.
H Northumbria Healthcare
The pandemic has resulted in a huge increase in the use of disposable face masks across society, not least in healthcare settings, and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is currently using around 70,000 every week. Now, with Northumbria Healthcare having joined the first wave of NHS organisations to install a special recycling machine, masks worn by staff, patients and visitors at hospitals in Northumberland and North Tyneside are now being recycled.
