Overview & Reflections from Chair

INTRODUCTORY REFLECTIONS ALEX AND ER SENC H A K , ETA ‘0 6 ( LEHIGH ) C HAI R & P R ESI DE N T There is a lot to learn from the past year of transformation and innovation at the Foundation. These efforts are both years in the making as well as in reaction to the changes forced on all of us. The programmatic and communication expansion of the Foundation will stand as a new benchmark for years to come, a framework that impacts more brothers from more generations and will continue to provide new ways for us to be a Psi U for life. With these new programs, we all have learned some wonderful lessons about what our brothers are interested in, and how we can best engage them. I have the honor of listening to so many stories inspired by the excitement of learning about our new programs and content-rich publications. Our increasingly complex operations have only be made stronger by the strategic direction provided by the board and committees. Our endowment and fiscal oversight have proven to be highly adept at navigating these tumultuous times with care and steadiness that will benefit us for years to come. We are fortunate that many of our brothers have seen the value in all this work and have invested in the Foundation more with both their time and their treasure. We remain ambitious, with a strong plan for 2021 that has great hopes of bringing us back together and working in very new ways to support our brothers. While we say thank you so many times, it is through the performance of our mission that I think we all truly show our appreciation.

Psi Upsilon

The Executive Council of Psi Upsilon postponed the 177th Psi U Convention until 2021. The well-being of our brothers is our greatest concern, and we did not feel we could provide a safe and responsible environment given the situation in July. Psi U hosted a quality virtual event in its place 2020 Digital Summit to report on the activities of the Fraternity, Foundation and Executive Council. All brothers of the fraternity were invited to attend free of charge. Highlights included a virtual trivia night, Saturday meeting sessions, and an awards ceremony. Videos of the event are archived on the Psi Upsilon YouTube Channel. We look forward to hosting the 177th Convention this summer in Madison, WI!

FALL FOUNDATION AWARDS EVENT Friday, October 23rd, the Foundation held an online awards event featuring a keynote speech by AMB Robert M. Beecroft (ret.d), Tau ’62 (Pennsylvania), and taped remarks from Morris Wolff, Gamma ’58 (Amherst), our Graduate scholarship recipients, and Jack Lageschulte, Epsilon Omega ’59 (Northwestern University).

Chapter presidents, many of whom are new to their position, convene in January to learn the fundamentals of their role in Psi Upsilon, discuss approaches to the challenges they will face, and bond as a group over a weekend experience. The Archons Academy comes at no cost to the brothers themselves and is made possible by the dedicated staff and volunteers that pack a lot into the three day retreat.

2 0 2 0 - AN E XC E PT I O N A L L Y CH A L L E N G I N G Y E A R If 2020 taught us one thing – it is not to get too invested in your plans. The Spring 2020 semester our chapter coaching model had to rapidly change and what we had expected to provide, service wise, drastically shifted. We are thankful to David Holgate, Psi ’83 (Hamilton) and Tejas Narayan, Epsilon Iota ’20 (RPI) who helped us transition and support our chapters in the Spring, and Jason Allen who joined the staff in the Fall as the New Director of Chapter Services. Continuous regular outreach to chapter leaders has helped us ensure they feel supported and encouraged at this tumultuous time, and has replaced in-person visits, but we feel that this has actually strengthened our relationship with undergraduate leaders and feedback has been positive.

ENHANCED CHAPTER SERVICES MODEL •Every Chapter Archon has been given a pro-level Zoom account to be able to host meetings and virtual gatherings without time limits and capacity issues. •Hosted monthly Town Halls for Archons and Advisors (separate) to allow everyone to connect, share best practices, and give fraternity wide updates. •Continuing Chapter Visits, but just in a remote environment. One on one meetings with chapter officers and chairmen as well

as a report to the chapter meeting. •Bi-weekly meetings with Chapter Archon to focus on chapter support and their own wellness. •Annual Risk Management presentation that covers our policy, bystander intervention tips, and what to do in a crisis has been moved to a virtual meeting. •Recruitment certification training has been made available to all undergraduates and advisors and includes considerations

6

for a virtual rush environment. •Resource pages have been created to assist chapters with important advice regarding operations, including housing, member engagement, recruitment and more. •Changed online risk management training program to Tightrope which includes more robust education on mental health and wellness, bystander intervention, and hazing prevention.

20 20 P ANE L

After successfully piloting an economic outlook panel discussion in 2015, the Foundation has firmly set out to do it on an annual basis by underwriting the event in honor of Patrick Gilrane, Psi ‘83 (Hamilton), who pioneered the first panel. The virtual moderated panel convened in November and united industry leaders with unique insight in the factors weighing and propelling the economy in a variety of ways. Brothers from the Psi Chapter, the Fraternity at large, and even friends of the Fraternity and Brother Gilrane came together to establish the fund of over $75,000 in commitments to date which will helps support the event in perpetuity. This will ensure that the Symposium remains affordable, polished, and simulcasted when we produce it live in NYC and potentially other venues around the country. 17 John “Jeb” Beckwith Psi ’84 (Hamilton College) 18 Philip Timon Tau ’86 (University of Pennsylvania) 19 David Mace Zeta ’98 (Dartmouth) 20 Peter J. NEW PROGRAM for 2020

Social Impact Fellowship

SOCIAL IMPACT FELLOWSHIP A UNIQ UE P R O G R AM IN T H E FRA T E RNA L W ORL D Our communities and society face rapidly evolving challenges that have radical effects on people’s lives and the important work of organizations. The skills required of leaders are often not developed in programs that breed exceptional clinicians, educators, and policy makers. Conviction, self-drive and passion often generate great organizations and high impact movements, but to govern an organization, manage people, and navigate funding opportunities are responsibilities many first time leaders realize they need to hone quickly as they move into leadership roles or deepen their involvement with meaningful causes. For many, access to resources for professional development often come at a price well outside of the means of organizations or firms. For the benefit of their career, the organization, and society - we need to encourage growth of leaders and expand their abilities to push through new challenges and lead us well. Dr. Osman J. Bhatty, M.D., Living up to the Pi ’10 (Syracuse University)–

fullest vision of Psi Upsilon’s mission: “to aspire to moral, intellectual, and social excellence in themselves as they seek to inspire these values in society”, we encourage them to engage in volunteer and professional leadership positions throughout their life that will impact their communities and our society, serving as a role model for others. To encourage this, The Psi Upsilon Foundation formed the Social Impact Fellowship, a year-long program that

supports leaders in social-impact driven professions - especially those just entering into a leadership role. Equal to the benefit of the funds is the honor of this award, bestowed on a select cohort showcasing their dedicated service to inspire the next generation of leaders in our chapters.

Fellows can use this money for a conference, class, coach, or other resource for individual development as a professional. •Round Table Discussions To bond the cohort together and learn from each other, we will convene virtual roundtable discussions during the year. The topics will be tailored to, and format designed for, the interests of the group and industry leaders invited as guests to moderate the discussion.

•Hosted Round Table Fellows are invited to select 8-10 brothers from our network to a round table (via Zoom) to discuss their cause and work. It can be a great way for them to network for their cause. •Chapter Discussion Fellows will speak via Zoom to their chapter undergraduate brothers (and interested alumni) sharing their journey and career trajectory. This offer a chance to encourage service and cause with younger brothers.

•Executive Coaching Fellows have the opportunity to work individually and in a group setting over a 4 month period with renowned leadership coach Lance Miller, Epsilon Nu ’80.

The committee will oversee the work of writers and interested brothers writing articles from the treasures found within the digital archive working to create content that highlights the best traditions of our brotherhood and showcases it in manner easily digestible for modern audiences. It will also consider how best to capture the experiences of our oldest members for posterity. To participate or support the archives financially contact Jonathan Chaffin, director of Member engagement: Jonathan@PsiU.org

A LOOK AT PLANNED GIVING

Planned Giving

The Schoepflin Society is a recognition circle for those who have named Psi Upsilon as a beneficiary in their will, estate plan or other planned gift. The Society is named for Paul H. Schoepflin,

Pi 1912 (Syracuse), whose bequest made him one Psi Upsilon’s largest benefactors.

Members of the society receive a variety of honors throughout the year with special invitations, communications and distinctions at events they attend. We are bolstering these offerings this year with a refreshing of the program which we hope will encourage more brothers to join this meaningful group. Additional creative planned giving vehicles have been added to the suite of options available in the Schoepflin Society. The foundation is appreciative of those who take the opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of future generations of Psi Upsilon brothers.

“My involvement in Psi U stems from the belief that I can make a difference in enabling Psi U to continue to be the beacon that it has been for so many. The decision Cathy and I made to include both Psi Upsilon and my own Chapter, the Upsilon, in our wills is another way we hope to be able to continue to make that difference.” –Dick Rasmussen, Upsilon ’72
