As we draw to a close on a year with some returns to normality, I’m awestruck by and grateful for how many of our brothers gave generously of their time to share expertise with us. The world’s increased familiarity with video chat and networking allowed brothers Dr. Elise Walton, PhD, Kappa ’80, (Bowdoin) and Lance Miller, Epsilon Nu ‘80(Michigan State) to remotely share their insight on change management and executive presentation respectively. Sam Schmidt, Lambda Sigma ‘86 (Pepperdine) shared his story and discussed the power of philanthropy and community involvement. Julia Denniss, Gamma Tau ’19 (Georgia Tech), a recipient of the Henry B. Poor, Gamma 1939 graduate scholarship, discussed her powerful drive to succeed and give back in person at the scholarship luncheon with undergraduates at Convention in Madison, WI. We held fireside chats with prominent brothers of Psi U like Mark Hedstrom, Omega ’95 (Chicago), Country Director for the US at Movember, and Todd D. Simon, Tau ’86 (Pennsylvania) Philanthropist and Chairman & CEO of Omaha Steaks. Finally, as described in these pages, we had a large number of entrepreneurial and finance-minded brothers share expertise, discuss trends, network, and talk about their projects as part of the 2nd Annual Gilrane Economic Symposium and FishFund Venture Presentations. Thank you to John Thaler, Omega ’97 (Chicago), David Morse, Psi ‘83 (Hamilton), John “Jeb” Beckwith, Psi ’84 (Hamilton) and Omair Sarwar, Xi ‘06 (Wesleyan), who participated in the former, and Rhoden Monrose, Beta Beta ‘09 (Trinity) of CariClub, Will Zhang, Omega ‘11 (Chicago) of OneChain Capital (his business partner is Alexander Clifford, Omega ‘11), and Jim Poore & Garrett Gleim, Tau ‘01 (Pennsylvania) of Immersitech who participated in the latter. Earlier this month, the Gilrane Economic Symposium was held in Greenwich, CT, to much acclaim from the great showing of attendees. Four distinguished panelists, John Thaler, Omega ’97 (Chicago), David Morse, Psi ‘83 (Hamilton), John “Jeb” Beckwith, Psi ’84 (Hamilton) and Omair Sarwar, Xi ‘06 (Wesleyan), discussed major trends in the global economy as we enter 2022, accompanied by robust engagement from the audience. “The energy of being in person with such an intellectually diverse group made this a momentous evening for everyone” said Patrick Gilraine, Psi ‘83 (Hamilton), in his closing remarks. The annual speaker panel, now endowed in Brother Gilrane’s honor, was followed by the first entrepreneurial pitch event of the FishFund. Three founding entrepreneurs representing their startups presented and took rapid fire questions from the audience. The paid event brought together brothers from around the country and from 13 chapters. Next year’s GES and FishFund Venture Presentations are scheduled for December 8th, 2022, in the same region.

MEDIA & JOURNALISM AWARD RECIPIENTS

T

Named in honor of Brother Willard Fiske, Psi 1851 (Hamilton), first editor of “The Diamond” of Psi Upsilon, this endowed fund was created in 2021. It supports the brothers who work with the Foundation to research, interview and create the content for the publications of Psi Upsilon. Their efforts support, preserve, and popularize Psi Upsilon’s history and the achievements of the fraternity and its brothers. Donors to this fund help support the stipend for the journalists, defer travel expenses for research and interviews, and provide for the procurement of needed equipment so the Fraternity may develop polished and comprehensive content for years to come. The fund is over 67% towards the initial $50,000 goal in just a short four months of activity. To make a contribution to the Fiske Fund, please contact Renee Beck (renee@psiu.org).

he 2021 Willard Fiske, Psi 1851 Psi Upsilon Media & Journalism Awards were presented to Misi Coliadis, Theta Pi ’13 (Georgia State University) and Robert Dorigo Jones, Epsilon Nu ‘85 (Georgia State). Brother Coliadis received the award for their well-researched pieces like, “Oral History: Catching up with the first female president of a Psi Upsilon Chapter: Dr. Patricia “Barney” Gellar, Kappa ’75 (Bowdin)” and “Service With Distinction” about W. Averell Harriman, Beta 1913 (Yale). They have also authored a significant (10+) number of profiles, interviews and other writing for the Psi Upsilon Foundation. Misi Coliadis currently lives in Long Beach, California with their husband and pets. They work as a technical writer at Sameday Health while also making a variety of handmade art. Misi loves having brothers all across the country and is happy to contribute their research, writing and editing services to Psi Upsilon’s internal publications. Misi Coliadis Psi Upsilon has shaped their life in some crucial ways, and they are very honored and grateful to have received this award. Misi says, “I am so honored to be among the first recipients of the Willard Fiske, Psi 1851, Psi Upsilon Media and Journalism award. I continue to enjoy using my English degree for the benefit of Psi Upsilon’s internal publications. Researching my brothers in the archive, online, and with interviews has given me a deeper insight into what a great organization I am a part of and the many upstanding humans it connects me to in the bonds of brotherhood. My sincerest thanks to everyone who had a hand in bringing this about.” 4

Bob Dorigo-Jones

Bob Dorigo-Jones, Epsilon Nu ’85 (Michigan State) recieved the award for researching, photographing, and writing, “The Epsilon Nu’s Connection to a “Miracle” that Happened During the Bubonic Plague” about the artist who carved the Epi Nu chapter-room, Alois Lang.

Bob Dorigo Jones is a best-selling author and president of Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch (MiLAW), a non-partisan consumer watchdog group. He has appeared on every major television network in America and has spoken to groups throughout the country about how common sense and reliability can be restored to the law. Bob and his wife of 35 years, Denise, had their first date at a Psi U Homecoming party. They have two grown children, so in the free time he now has, Bob likes to dig through the old Epsilon Nu historical records and share stories about the chapter’s interesting past on a private Facebook page for both alumni and active members of the chapter. He hopes that by developing a better understanding of the hard work that has gone into building and maintaining their historic chapter, the younger brothers will more fully appreciate the unique gift they have been given and take better care of it for future generations. Besides that, he says, it’s just plain fun to find 60- to 100-year-old pictures and documents that show what life was like in a fraternity “in the old days.”

History OF & PSI Archives UPSILON The newly formed History and Archives committee had some big tasks and some big wins this year. The committee was formed out of the Digital Archive project to use the archives to educate about Psi U history and the accomplishments of our brothers using the archives and digital archives stewarded by the Foundation. The original mandate of the committee was to 1) create and publish a journal with stories of interest to our brothers and 2) to create a presentation around Psi U history to present at Convention. Both of these goals were accomplished this year; “Reflections: A journal of Psi Upsilon History” was published in March*, and Evan Terry, Epsilon Phi ‘93, and Jonathan Chaffin, Gamma Tau ’00, presented “The Rho & the Rho Owl Song” at convention in Madison, WI. Shortly after formation, however, the quick sale of the International Office laid a HUGE task before the committee…pack up (and very roughly catalog) the rooms of the Psi Upsilon archives; largely unorganized and spread across 3-4 rooms and dozens of shelves. Also transcribing and cataloging the location of almost 1000 bricks in Heritage square. I’m pleased to say the committee rose to the challenge and not only boxed, but created a filing system and took more comprehensive notes than have existed for the archives to date, as far as we can tell. The archives have now been carefully moved to climate controlled storage, and the bricks of Heritage Square palletized and transported for safe keeping, awaiting their eventual re-use. The history and archives committee is currently actively soliciting works of Psi U scholarship for the next issue of Reflections, due out in March. Email Jonathan@PsiU.org for details around being included. Every chapter has boxes in the archive, the contents of which yield many surprising things. Brothers of a scholarly nature are invited to join the committee in person once or twice a year at our Archives Weekends; the next will be May or June in Indianapolis, IN.

Donor Profile When you meet Bill Cavanagh, expect a warm smile and good humor. At first this mild mannered and bespectacled brother comes across as another cheery suburban Dad ready with a good joke and a relaxed smile. One might not guess that behind this prosaic grin stands someone who experienced an eventful youth of the 60’s and 70’s and is now one of the most respected tax attorneys not only in New York but in the world. Psi Upsilon began early for Bill. At his birth the doctor who delivered him was a Psi U. As he grew up, the local undertaker was a Psi U. Then when he arrived at Syracuse, one of the student volunteers helping him move in was a Psi U. In the Fall 1969 he was part of a pledge class of three. This was a tumultuous time for the country in general and for fraternities.

WILLIAM CAVANAGH, PI ‘72 (SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY)

The Pi Chapter’s president was quoted in a Diamond article: “Reports of the Pi’s death have been greatly exaggerated.” What was causing this challenge to the Greek system? As Bill recalls it, “it was a time when conformity was being replaced by nonconformity; what was happening around the country was happening on college campuses.” The Pi Chapter had a strong rebound in the Spring 1970 with a pledge class of 19. Bill says, “Eventually the Syracuse University community realized that what was going on all over campus was happening inside fraternities as well and it became more welcoming to the Greeks.” The Pi alumni also stood behind the active brotherhood. “We had a crisis in membership and the brothers of the 50’s and 60’s came out to help. Their politics may have differed from ours [the active brotherhood] but we all pulled together as loyal Psi U’s to keep the Pi Chapter strong. I’ll never forget that”. When reflecting on his college experience as a whole, Bill said “The late 60’s and early 70’s were big transition years in the country: ‘sex, drugs, rock and roll’ but also the anti-war effort, civil rights and nonconformity.” In hindsight,” he says, “it was a really good time to be in college.”

Kerven, Pi ‘71; Pi initiation banquet including Rudy Bill with his brothers at the Fall 2019 ack, Pi ‘75; Jim Cornacchia ‘86, Bill Wildh y Henr ‘75; Pi el, Deng ‘73; Carl Chris Stringer, Pi ‘69; Jim Rodems, Pi Cavanaugh, Pi ‘72 and others.

After college Bill went on to George Washington University law school, and then worked at the IRS as a tax litigator. Cavanagh then clerked for Judge Arthur L. Nims, III, a U.S. Tax Court judge, and describes it as the “best job [he’s’] ever had… though in fairness I’ve only 6

had three jobs.” That third job was with the New York City law firm Chadbourne & Parke LLP, which eventually merged with Norton Rose Fulbright LLP, where he’s been more than 40 years. “We now have over 3,000 lawyers so it’s hard to know all of them”. Cavanagh specializes in tax law with a focus on very large domestic and cross-border transactions as well as green energy (large scale wind and solar projects). While this specialization may seem narrow, Cavanagh says that no large deal goes forward without tax lawyers playing a major role. Cavanagh currently serves as Norton Rose Fulbright’s co-head of US Tax and has received international accolades as a top US tax attorney. Cavanagh says that he gained his reputation as a well-regarded US tax expert in part through numerous speaking engagements and papers discussing complex tax issues: “I’ve worked very hard to be recognized as a leading US tax expert. It is gratifying personally and it helps my clients because opposing counsel recognizes that they are negotiating with someone whose tax judgment can be trusted.” Bill is included in the top tax lawyer lists in Chambers, the Legal 500 (2015-2022), Who’s Who Legal, Best Lawyers (1999-2022), New York Metro Super Lawyer (1996-2020), Best Lawyers in America (1999-2021), and Guide to the World’s Leading Tax Advisers, Euromoney. With all of his professional accomplishments, Cavanagh has still found time to focus on the people he cares for. He has two children, Conor McCormick-Cavanagh, a journalist, and Kaitlyn McCormick-Cavanagh, an accountant. Bill lost his wife Carla Marino to cancer a few years ago. Bill recalls: “On what turned out to be Carla’s final night -- although I didn’t know it at the time -- I decided to serenade her with the “Sweetheart Song” (and then some other Psi U songs) while

she was sleeping. At that moment, I felt the warm support of all my Pi brothers which helped me through that very difficult time.” Bill currently shares his life with wife Ricki Gardner. Over the years Cavanagh found time not just for work and family but also for his community. He spent twelve years on the Pelham school board. He also headed up the 100 team Pelham Rec Soccer Program for eight years. “I believe in paying it back to the community.” Throughout these times, Psi U has remained a constant part of Cavanagh’s life. “My best friends are people who were [active] brothers at the same time I was. We have been friends through the good and the bad.” For the fiftieth anniversary of his own initiation, Cavanagh addressed the Pi Chapter’s 2019 Initiation Banquet. “I was duly impressed. It reinforced my commitment to the Pi and to Psi Upsilon,” said Cavanagh.

Cavanagh has consistently donated to the Psi Upsilon Foundation, for many years at a very high level: “Psi Upsilon was there for me in college and I’ll be forever grateful. The best way to thank our predecessors is keep their legacy going.” He added that “Many talented alumni devote a lot of time to Psi Upsilon and the local chapters. I try to do my part through contributions.” Cavanagh said that “when I was a recent graduate, I saw that a long-ago Pi alumnus, who was a very prominent New York City lawyer, made a substantial contribution each year. The fact that he still cared after so many years was an inspiration for me. I can only hope that there are others who see what I do and are inspired to give as well.” 1. https://www.psiuarchives.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/ The-Diamond-of-Psi-Upsilon_Fall_2007.pdf
