Review The
of Psi Upsilon December 2020
Honoring “our best networker” by underwriting new annual Economic Symposium the annual educational event. “This will allow us to plan longer term...invest to make it a polished event that brothers will look forward to each year” says Foundation Chair Alex Senchak, Eta ‘06. The Symposium will be simulcast for all brothers to participate in and will be open to undergraduate brothers and younger alumni at a discounted rate thanks to the funding. To support the Gilrane Economic Symposium, please contact Alex Senchak at ASenchak@psiu.org
A group of generous brothers have come together to honor Patrick Gilrane, Psi ‘83 (Hamilton) for his exceptional networking and relationship skills that have long benefited Psi Upsilon Fraternity. The Foundation has created a fund to underwrite The Gilrane Economic Symposium, an annual event in November that hosts a panel of industry leaders speaking on the outlook of industry trends and related topics that influence business practices and global markets. “Pat is the consummate networker who has really built a great energy around the Psi chapter and International” explains Jeb Beckwith, Psi ‘84, a classmate and brother, “its great to honor him this way”. The panel discussion, held this year virtually on November 12th, will be held in New York City and feature a lunch for attendees. Currently with gifts and pledges of $60,000 (as of 12/15/2020) towards a $75,000 goal, the fund within the endowment will support the costs to host

Donor Spotlight: Jack Withiam Profile, Psi ‘71 (Hamilton) Jack Withiam, Psi ’71 (Hamilton College), resides in Greenwich Connecticut after retiring in 2011 from his position as Senior Vice President and General Counsel at George Little Management LLC. Jack joined the family company of George F. “Jeff” Little, Psi ‘71, in 1978. Jack and Jeff have remained close friends through personal and professional environments over the last 53 years. Jack’s friendship with Jeff began in the Psi house; Jack comments that the brotherhood was a closeknit group and in fact, he could have worked professionally with a number of his brothers in the house after graduation. To this day, a regular email-chain keeps the Psi brothers connected and aware of upcoming reunions and events in one another’s lives. With a foundation of comradery, honesty, and academic accomplishment, the 40 odd brothers also kept the Psi house a center of campus life; they worked together to open up the Great Hall – removing furniture from the room, setting up the stage for live bands – to host the student body weekly. In the 70s Hamilton’s social life revolved around fraternities. When the Psi brothers were not hunched over their textbooks to achieve some of the highest GPAs on Hamilton’s campus, most of the Psi brothers also had commitments to the basketball, football, hockey, and soccer Varsity teams. Brother Withiam fondly describes meals prepared by Mrs. Gardner (or “Mrs G” for those who knew her intimately) that included breakfast to dinner and countless cups of coffee and beer in between. Brother Withiam describes the Hamilton community as open and friendly, but no bonds were as strong as those between fraternity brothers. Jack shares that two years ago, Frank Coffey, Psi ’69, developed cancer. Quickly, the brotherhood rallied together to provide financial and emotional support. To Jack, it was unquestionable that his brothers would be there for one another and they met and exceeded his high expectations. Brother Coffey has now recovered and sends his fellow brothers short videos of him shooting hoops skillfully with the coach of the Golden State Warriors. Brother Withiam went to Hamilton College on a scholarship. He is continuously grateful to the unknown patrons who supported him through it and expresses his
gratitude through donations to the Psi Upsilon Foundation. Jack humbly expresses that he is proud that he can support future generations of brothers to form, and benefit from, the same type of friendships that have sustained Jack into retirement. Further, Brother Withiam served on Hamilton’s College Board. In 1978, Hamilton became co-ed and the College Board became aware that they needed to provide more inclusive residence options for female students and moved to rennovate and acquire the Psi chapter house. The land was owned by Hamilton, thus restricting Psi Upsilon’s agency. Brother Withiam helped negotiate fair evaluations of the Psi house so that the property would be bought for market value and the money could be reinvested in scholarship programs and special events for brothers. Psi chapter memorabilia remains in the renovated dormitory that now houses over 50 students. Jack reflects on the work of Patrick Gilrane, Psi ’83, who launched, and continues to run, Psi’s Career Day. This program actually lasts a full weekend and includes everything from mock interviews to trips to bowling alleys to unite undergrads and alumni and support Psi brothers in their career development. This event is open to all class years, and Brother Witham boasts that Psi’s Career Day is indicative of what fraternities stand for: opportunity and fun.

Digital Archives Launched! Psiu.org/archive The history of Psi Upsilon is long and storied, and has produced many documents, songbooks, magazines, directories, and written works, many of which are stored physically at the International Office in Indianapolis. The Psi Upsilon Digital Archives project is providing access to a selection of the records and heritage materials of the Fraternity archives in support of the Fraternity’s educational mission available to our brotherhood through a FREE digital platform. As an additional goal, the project hopes to give the Fraternity an enhanced multimedia presence by creating assets like digital publications hosted on our upgraded Issuu account, and by creating new edited video content through our YouTube Channel. The Fraternity is also improving access to our existing video content, photos, and prior publications. To participate in the archiving and writing work of the project or to contribute financial support please contact Director of Member Engagement Jonathan M Chaffin,

2020 CARES Act Information for Year End Giving As we approach the end of the calendar year, the Foundation wanted to remind you of the following tax provisions provided by the CARES Act that may impact your charitable giving for 2020. • Are you itemizing your deductions this year? Under the CARES Act, itemizers may deduct up to 100% of their adjusted gross income (AGI) for cash contributions made to Psi Upsilon in 2020. This is up from the standard 60% limit in prior years.
New Issue of the Beacon available now!
Did you see it? PsiU.org/Publications • Do you plan on taking the standard deduction? The CARES Act allows for an additional, “above the line” deduction for cash contributions made to Psi Upsilon in 2020. This deduction is limited to $300 for an individual or $300 for couples. Normally, no additional deduction is permitted when taking the standard deduction. • The CARES Act has suspended required minimum distributions from retirement accounts for 2020. However, individuals may still make a quailed charitable distribution of up to $100,000 from their IRAs, without the distribution being added to taxable income. Should your donations in 2020 exceed your AGI deduction limits, you may still carry forward excess deduc-
3
tions for up to five subsequent tax years. • Are you considering a corporate gift? The AGI limit for cash contributions was also increased for corporate donors, allowing corporations to deduct up to 25% of their taxable income. This is an increase from the 10% limit in prior years. As always, your are encouraged to consult with your tax and legal advisors when considering how these provisions may impact your charitable giving this year. Thank you for your support and for being such an important part of the Psi Upsilon community. Warmest wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.
