Editor’s Note In less than a year that your humble servant joined the ranks of the Board of Directors of the PSME-WRSA, Jeddah Chapter in mid-year last year of 2011 as Public Relation Officer under the Presidency of Engr. Rainier P. Patawi, and this year as your I.T. Director, the task of reviving the Jeddah PriME MovErs, the official newsletter of our beloved organization fell on my shoulders. The task is not easy to carryon especially that we can not

The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers - Western Region, Saudi Arabia, Jeddah Chapter started early this year to serve the General Membership by conducting a technical seminar on Basic Motor Controls, Advanced Motor Controls and Basic and Advanced Electrical Load Computations on Feb. 3, Feb. 17 & March 3, 2012 held at New Al Jedaani Hospital Lecture Room 330. This is part of the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) program of the PSME - WRSA for its members. The seminars were conducted by Engr. Carmelo L. Neri and Engr. Richard C. Estardo.

I have to search in my heart the Love, enthusiasm and dedication I have bestowed during my college days when I became the President of the JPSME— Notre Dame University Chapter in Cotabato City, Philippines and at the same time an Ex-Officio Senator of the Supreme Student Government. (SSG) in 1993 –1994. Our guiding principle “Think not what the organization can do to you but what you

can do to your organization” is a gentle reminder to all of us to do our share, big or small, for the betterment of our society. The challenges that lies ahead are many. Some issues have to be resolved. Transparency is the best policy and a big boast to our ability that “we are ready to lead once more”. With the able guidance of our Chapter President, Napoleon M. Cepriaso, PME, we make sure that our goals and your expectations could be met.

“Creative Communication is our Objective”

President’s Message CRISOSTOMO C. ORTIZ, M.E. President - 2012 PSME - WRSA Toastmasters Club 6899

“Serving the community is one of our clubs objectives”. It reminds the youth of their responsibilities not only for themselves but also for other people. They are the building blocks of our society and if we guide them at a very young age with the importance of Public Speaking and Leadership Skills, we can ensure a future which one organization will flourish, Toastmaster Cris C. Ortiz, Club President of PSME-WRSA Toastmasters Club 6899 in Jeddah stated during his opening remarks at the start of the club’s 3rd Youth Leadership Program (YLP) on 5th January, 2012. The Club is currently conducting the YLP at International Philippine School in Jeddah (IPSJ). With 27 bright students from first year to fourth year high school, the program is a platform for sharing knowledge in Public Speaking and Leadership Skills.

Cont. from page 6 where the youth will actually conduct it the way a regular Toastmasters business meeting is being held. The club’s Vice President for Education, TM Edgar D. Hernandez explained what “ Youth Leadership Program” is all about and the benefits the young leaders get. He cited the importance of Communication and Leadership Skills among today’s generation. IPP TM Dennis I. Oppus, YLP coordinator shared some of his experiences during his first encounter with the Toastmaster. He felt the crocodile in his chest when he was called upon by the Toastmaster of the day to speak in front of the audience but since then he developed his self confidence in public speaking. Then, the youths were treated to witness a speech demo by TM Edgar D. Hernandez who delivered his speech about his early years with his father and followed by TM Edwin Advincula who gave a clear demonstration on how to become a good speech evaluator. One of the pinnacles of Toastmastering is Table Topics portion. This was handled by the Division G Secretary TM Yasser Al-Kinnaney with the guidance of Divison G Governor Madamme Tess Villanueva who shared her learned skills on how to answer question on the spot. The participants were also given a lecture on chairmanship and an overview on Parliamentary Procedure by DTM

Joey Villanueva. TM Sultan Salem, the club’s Sergeant at Arms described the proper use of timing devices and monitoring of the time allotted for each speaker. The VP for Memership TM Zeni gave some feedbacks on being a grammarian and challenged participants to use proper grammar during delivery of their speeches. The club’s secretary TM Adodou provided a glimpse of what is an “Ah Counter” pointing out to everyone to avoid the use of any jargons or repeated words such as; ah, um, er or you know, you know. One of the climaxes of the program was the election of Youth Officers for the first four sessions. The elected aspiring youth leaders are YL Angel Manaloto as President, YL Chuck Boaphuan as VP, YL Pay Macabanding as Secretary and YL Jeff Macabanding as Sergeant at Arms. Then for the remaining four sessions, Youth Officers elected are YL Pay Macabanding as President, YL Hasna Muti as Vice President, YL Jomo Lomangco as Secretary and YL Stephen Hernandez as Sergeant at Arms. The next four sessions were more exciting . Youths were give hands-on in public speaking. They delivered their own speeches, participated in evaluating the prepared speakers and took shots at Table Topics. TM Cris C. Ortiz lectured on Elements of a Good Speech and gave a review on Officers Functions. TM Edgar D. Hernandez presented a lecture

on Principles of Group Discussion and TM Greg Gulmatico gave tips on Impromptu Speaking and Speech Organization. On the other side of the communication skill, youths were not only trained to speak effectively but also enhanced the skill of listening. TM Edwin Advincula shared a thought of why we have two ears and only one tongue . It is because it is a gentle reminder that we should listen twice as much as we talk. TM Greg Gulmatico provided deeper insight on Chairmanship where roles of the chairman and tips for good meetings were discussed. Beefing up the youths’ interest is the selection of best performers for the 3 categories such as ; Best Prepared Speaker, Best Table Topics Speaker and Best Evaluator for each session. The program is supported by other Toastmasters with partial financial support sponsored by Groupe Genoyer, a French company dealing with piping project management and Jollibee, Filipino Hamburger Chain for sponsoring the meal for one of the YLP sessions.

The Participants Each Youth Leadership Program group is limited to 15 to 20 people. with a maximum of 25. That Way, each person receives individual attention and has the opportunity to get a practical experience. Participants for the program are selected by the sponsoring Toastmasters club or by a cooperating organization such as their school. The program is not an award to honor those who have already become leaders. It is designed for the much larger group who are still working on communication skills. Participants are selected for what they can become, not for what they have already done. Often teenagers want the course as a supplement to their high school education or to prepare for college.

TM Dennis Iglesias Oppus with over-all responsibility for the program stood as the coordinator. He worked closely with any cooperating organization and attends each meeting, conducts most of the training and counseled the program participants. The coordinator has assistant, PSME-WRSA Toastmasters Club VP for Education TM Edgar D. Hernandez, who conducted discussions and substituted the coordinator, should he be not able to attend a meeting. Youth Leadership Training Program (YLTP) is an optional program for a Toastmasters Club as it is a time consuming activity to carry out and use up a lot of financial funds and other resources. It ls also requiring ample time of preparation. Some may even take more than the eight sessions, plus a strong commitment from all Toastmasters to be present during the eight sessions. Since it is an optional program for Toastmasters, there are only two or three clubs (out of more than 30 clubs in the Western Region) which conducted a Youth Leadership Training Program.

PSME-WRSA Toastmasters Club on the other hand has carried out such program for three consecutive years. First YLTP was conducted in 2010 under the Presidency of TM Jaime L. Leviste and was coordinated by DTM Glenn Orlina, Jr. at International Philippine School in Jeddah and in 2011 during the term of TM Dennis I. Oppus and was coordinated by TM Jaime L. Leviste at Al Hekma International School. This year of 2012, the program once again gone back to the first school where PSME-WRSA Toastmasters Club started their YLTP, the IPSJ. This time under the Leadership of Club President TM Cris C. Ortiz, coordinated by TM Dennis I. Oppus and assisted by TM Edgar D. Hernandez. The program was conducted with a much larger group of High School students and it was equally participated by students varying from freshman to senior level. Unlike the previous programs, this years YLTP was treated grandiosely, bigger and “better than great” group. It is also established segment in the history in the following sense: 1.) It has the highest number of participants, 24 graduates from first year to 4th year high school students. 2.) It has the most number of Prepared Speech participants with 15 speakers. 3) The most number of parents and guests who attended the special event. 4) PSME - WRSA Toastmasters Club shouldered all the expenses

The club had successfully solicited sponsorships and support from two companies in order to sustain the program. We had Jollibee, the number 1 Filipino Hamburger chain with branches in Jeddah and kingdom doled out free meals during session 7. A water-resistant watch can be exposed to light moisture, such as light splashes of water when washing your hands. Some water-resistant watches can be submerged into water, and their depth of resistance is indicated. The depth of resistance is measured in “atmosphere” (ATM) or “bar”. Each ATM denotes 10 meters of static water pressure. Below is the explanation: 3ATM or water-resistant to 30m: Suitable for daily use. Not for swimming or submersion in water. Can only withstand splashes of water. 5ATM or water-resistant to 50m: Suitable for short swimming sessions in shallow water. Not for diving and snorkeling. 10ATM or water-resistant to 100m: Suitable for diving and snorkeling. 20ATM or water-resistant to 200m: Suitable for high-impact water sports and some diving activities, like skin diving. Diver’s 150m or Diver’s 200m: Suitable for skin and scuba diving. Meets ISO standard. Some dos and don’ts: Don’t wear your water-resistant watch into shower, hot tub or sauna.
