Artist Spotlight: Rita Kirkman
Rita Kirkman was born an artist. She has been using pastel since she was 11 years old and had her first paid portrait commission at 17. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1988. Meanwhile, in 1986 she began a 12-year career sketching quick portraits at amusement parks, and in 1988 she began a business drawing detailed pencil portraits from client photos.
Rita has continued to work on her skills through out the years, taking workshops with renowned artists and developing her own distinctive, luminous style and technique. Most recently Rita won the Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Traylor Award at the SAALM 92 Annual Artists Exhibition with her painting “Cousins”, below. This is a large artwork -32x32 inches.
I have always been very attracted to Rita’s style. When she agreed to chat with me for this spotlight, I was excited to ask her about her process, which she generously shared. She takes her own reference pictures so she can choose the best time to capture the kind of light and the direction of it she wants to paint. Then she manipulates the pictures, moving objects and adjusting values and intensity, until they look very close to how she wants to paint them. She starts her painting process with an underpainting of quinacridone gold and terracotta acrylics that create a super warm surface. A lot of this underpainting shows through the cool pastel going on top of them and creates the vibrant glow her artwork depicts. During the pandemic Rita had to figure out online workshops. That led to the birth of her Patreon channel, which is now over 2 years old and features over 90 videos to learn from. Visit Rita’s Webpage and Patreon Channel!
