FALL 2020–SPRING 2021

Applying to Penn State

Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP)

Penn State’s application for admission is available on August 1. The deadline for first-year students to apply for non-binding Early Action is November 15. Students who choose not to apply Early Action should submit a complete application, including all required materials, by December 1.

If your academic performance has not been strong in high school, you may want to consider applying to Penn State through the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP).

Applications are accepted after that date, but it may become more difficult to gain acceptance to your first-choice campus and/or major. Penn State’s admission application is available online at admissions.psu.edu. You can also apply for first-year admission only using the Coalition for College Access at mycoalition.org or the Common App at commonapp.org. If you are in the Greater Pittsburgh area and need assistance, you may email us at pghapo@psu.edu to schedule an appointment. Fee waivers may also be available.

The CSP is similar to ACT 101 programs offered at other Pennsylvania colleges and universities. The CSP offers admission consideration to students who demonstrate the potential to be successful college students but may require specialized and structured academic support services. Counselors, tutors, advisers, and others work together to help students with the skills needed to do well in the classroom. The CSP is for first-year applicants who are Pennsylvania residents and who plan to begin their studies in the fall semester. If you would like additional information about the Comprehensive Studies Program, call our office at 412-263-2900, or email us at pghapo@psu.edu.

Schreyer Honors College For more than twenty years, Penn State has offered a comprehensive honors program to students of exceptional ability in all majors. The Schreyer Honors College (SHC) enrolls approximately 300 first-year students each fall, and admission is highly competitive. Essays, letters of recommendation, student activities, and an optional interview are part of the application review and selection process. All incoming first-year Schreyer Scholars receive a $5,000 Academic Excellence Scholarship, which is renewable for four years. Application to the SHC is separate from the Penn State undergraduate application. Complete the Penn State application online and click “yes” when asked if you are interested in the Schreyer Honors College to be directed to the SHC application. Students who complete the SHC application by November 1 are eligible to schedule an optional alumni interview. The final SHC deadline is December 4. Please note that all letters of recommendation must be received by this date. For more information about the Schreyer Honors College, visit shc.psu.edu.

Bus Trips Due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we will not offer bus trips this academic year. We will have virtual visit opportunities for several Penn State campuses, but students can also arrange visits directly with their campus of interest, by visiting admissions.psu.edu/pennstate/campuses.
